The Chefs of Puerto Rico

The Chefs of Puerto Rico

The Chefs of Puerto Rico

Being a chef in Puerto Rico is more than just a profession—it’s a calling. It’s about embracing a community overflowing with laughter, joy, and a warmth that’s as unique as the island itself. Here, food is more than sustenance; it’s a celebration, a story, and a testament to the unbreakable bonds that tie us together like family. Our vibrant food scene is a colorful tapestry woven from the creativity and passion of countless chefs who are leaving their mark in the most delicious ways.

Puerto Rican restaurants have been celebrated for decades. Our founder, Marie Helene Reinhold, once a judge for the Tenedores de Oro (Golden Forks) award, knew even in the 1980s that her discerning taste in jewelry was just as keen when it came to fine cuisine. Since then, Puerto Rico’s culinary reputation has only soared, earning international acclaim for its bold flavors and artistry.

The chefs you’re about to meet are masters of their craft, each with a story to tell through every dish they create. Whether it’s from a house in Rio Grande that has been delighting governors since 1974 or the kitchens of James Beard winners, these artists blend creativity with tradition, each plate as a unique expression of their vision. Just like fine jewelry, every dish is a work of art, carefully crafted with passion and precision. Our chefs come from all walks of life—some born and raised in Puerto Rico, others who fell in love with our island and infused their own cultural flair into the mix. The spirit and intentionality behind their work shines through in every bite.

As the holiday season approaches, Grupo Reinhold is excited to share in the joy of countless delicious meals with you. We’re deeply grateful for your support and for being part of our journey. When you stop by to say hello this holiday season, bring your appetite—you never know what delightful surprises await!

May your celebrations be filled with love, laughter, and, of course, mouthwatering food.

From our family to yours,

“Cuisine involves all the senses — taste, sight, sound, touch, and presentation. Like jewelers, chefs are involved with the craft: up at dawn shopping the food, vegetables from farm to table, having their hands in the soil and knowing the fishmonger. As a jeweler, I know the metal we use for our bullion silver. It comes from a specific source. A great chef knows their product and where it comes from. It makes the essential difference. To produce food is an art and a craft. That’s what great chefs have taught me —know your product— from there it’s the preparation, creativity, and artistry.

Top of mind is a memorable meal at Chef José Rey’s Compostela in San Juan with the Morrows, favorite customers, and friends—perfectly curated fare from tapas to desert paired with fine Antidoto Spanish wine!”

“Growing up with European parents, food was always a big part of my life. Celebrations were always around meals, sharing family recipes were important too, and are still a part of my weekly cooking repertoire. Whether you cook and entertain at home or go to a wonderful restaurant to eat, food is a way to connect with family and friends on the warmest level.”

“Dining at Casa Manolo in Puerto Rico was an exquisite experience. From the gracious hospitality of owner and executive chef Manolo Piqueres to the exceptional Spanish dishes, every detail was crafted with care and artistry. Just as my take on jewelry design, where each piece tells a story, every bite at Casa Manolo spoke of tradition, passion, and elegance.”

“Having grown up in a household where cooking and feeding others is our way of sharing and showing love, the art of food preparation is my favorite way to experience a culture and bring loved ones together. Whether in a restaurant or a warm home kitchen, I have deep appreciation for how chefs can transform raw, fresh ingredients into a sensory experience, even for something as simple as tostones! The ethos of working with our hands to bring something beautiful to life is the cornerstone of any creative individual, from mastering techniques to the attention to detail at every step of the way. It is a passionate celebration of artistry and craft regardless of discipline – culinary, jewelry, and beyond.”

“My life brings me a tremendous number of experiences in hotels and food business. A very important meal for me it is not only about food, but also about the welcoming you receive when you enter a restaurant, the knowledge of the waitress to recognize your needs and who you are. How they propose an aperitivo before dinner, how they suggest the best wine for the meal you order, the surround of the space and people do help a lot for the experience to be a success. In general, I would say that the care you receive through the meal is fundamental and the food tastes better if you feel comfortable while eating. Today a chef can prepare exceptional food, especially when they concentrate in high end traditional local dishes. This mix of tailored service and authenticity in tradition means perfection and very much resonates with jewels as well. This is the answer for a beautiful evening, especially if you have in front of you the person you love.”

“Like a jewelry designer brings to life a piece of jewelry, a chef can turn food into an edible work of art that captivates both palate and eye.

On my first visit to Puerto Rico I had the pleasure to dine at Santaella. I remember that evening exceptionally well, not only was the food exceptional but the atmosphere and the beauty of Puerto Rico made a long lasting impression on me.”

“Chefs and beautifully crafted food have always held a special place in my life, much like the intricate details in our jewellery. Both culinary arts and jewelry design require a deep appreciation for aesthetics, creativity, and precision. When I visited Puerto Rico, the authenticity and the taste of the food really captivated me. The fresh, local ingredients and the passion the chefs put into each dish created an unforgettable experience.”

“I’m inspired by the ritual of putting together a perfect evening. The combination of thoughtful food, ambiance, and what outfit to wear plays an important role in the jewelry pieces I design. I think about what events the women who wear my jewelry will be attending-- whether that’s an intimate meal at home or a large gala dinner. We had a spectacular meal at Santaella during our last trip to Puerto Rico. The food, atmosphere, and cocktails were unmatched.”

“As a French native, food has always played a significant role in my life. For us, it’s not just about meals; it’s about gathering and enjoying quality time with our loved ones. French cuisine, with its emphasis on elegant details and evoking unique emotions, has undoubtedly influenced my creations. Just like my jewelry, I believe beautifully crafted dishes should surprise and amaze.

Now living in New York, food continues to hold a special place in my heart. The moments I cherish most are often spent at a lovely dinner date or a convivial gathering with friends. I haven’t had the chance to eat in Puerto Rico yet, but I look forward to the opportunity very soon.”

“I am vegetarian and particularly love when freshly harvested seasonal vegetables are prepared simply and delicately like natural earthly jewels. Some of my favorite rare gems like mandarin garnet and tourmalines when cut into luscious cabochons resemble exotic fruits.

One of my favorite dining memories in Puerto Rico actually concerns chocolate. It was an afternoon lunch hosted at a one of my collectors’ homes. We were served hot chocolate in beautiful demi-tasse china cups while waiting for lunch. It was an unexpectedly elegant moment that I’ve never forgotten.”

“In his own right, Alex was a fine chef. He applied the same level of experimentation and curiosity to his culinary pursuits as he did to all aesthetic subjects, whether it was landscape design, architecture, his choice of clothing or his jewelry designs; it all lives in the details and the planning. Many times, I witnessed him fusing a variety of different cuisines into something that did not, on its surface, make sense, but ultimately, he pulled off these feats beautifully. He loved to be shocked and surprised by professional chefs, and Eric Ripert of Le Bernardin was a favorite. A great memory of dining out in Puerto Rico is being taken out by the Reinhold team and personally guided through local menus. For him, it was all about curiosity and observation.”

“Puerto Rico has always stood out as a very special place. The environment of Puerto Rico serves as a constant inspiration for world-class chefs. Similarly, Pomellato’s designs draw inspiration from the organic and historic elements of its surroundings, resulting in jewels that are meaningful, and contemporary – talismans for the modern woman.”

“I definitely think luxury is connected to the art of living and more extended to food. That is why along my journey with Messika Paris, I have collaborated with renowned chefs such as Pierre Hermé and Quentin Lechat, Royal Monceau Paris Pastry Chef who we collaborated with during Christmas time last year. We also collaborated with Colombian Chef Juan Arbelaez for Café Messika on the rooftop of Printemps Haussman. This was the first pop-up café on the rooftop of the store. This project was very dear to my heart and felt pretty natural for the brand because when you visit a Messika boutique you are warmly welcomed to our Maison as if you were visiting a friend’s home. Each store has its uniqueness that our customers can quickly connect to. This concept was an opportunity for me to express myself in every aspect of the art of living, including food service, drinks and decor.”

“One of my favorite chefs is Nobu Matsuhisa. He creates each dish beautifully, with quality and precision, as do I with each piece of jewelry I design. We recently collaborated on a special project for Sushi Club, a community started by Nobu to celebrate the simplicity of quality food and art. With the ethos of this community in mind, I designed diamond chopsticks. I was honored to work alongside him during this project.”

“The artistry and creativity that chefs bring to their dishes resonate deeply with my own approach to jewelry design. Just as a chef meticulously selects and combines ingredients to create a culinary masterpiece, I carefully choose materials and techniques to craft unique, exquisite pieces. Food is not just about sustenance; it is an expression of culture, history, and emotion. This perspective aligns with my work, where every piece tells a story and celebrates global traditions. I plan to go to Puerto Rico for the first time later this year, and I am very excited to try authentic Puerto Rican food during my trip!”

“Beautifully crafted food, both homemade and from a restaurant is my other creative outlet when I’m not designing jewelry. It’s funny because it’s almost the complete opposite of jewelry...jewelry is something that lives on for generations and food is so ephemeral. You spend hours laboring in the kitchen, create something beautiful and then it’s gone so quickly. But, memories of the experience live on. I ate at Santaella the last time I was in San Juan and I still remember the tamarind margarita I drank at the beautiful bar before everyone arrived. A well made cocktail so often means an even better meal to come and this was certainly the case. Every dish was not only beautiful, but delicious and I kept turning my head as other dishes went by.”

“During my visit to Puerto Rico, I had a memorable dining experience at one of Chef Mario Pagan’s renowned restaurants called ‘Mario Pagan’. We were excited to taste authentic Puerto Rican cuisine with a modern twist. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that we were in for something extraordinary. The yuca dishes were particularly impressive, with many having an unexpected, sweet note that perfectly balanced the savory elements. The sweet note of the dish reminded me of my latest collection, B HOME, which is inspired by the sweet and harmonious flavors of honey from my homeland, Israel.”

“Beautifully crafted food and beautifully crafted jewelry are very similar in that you must use the best ingredients and materials, and have extreme attention to detail to produce an amazing product. For me, one meal that comes to mind is dinner at Jean François Piège’s Le Grand Restaurant in Paris. He created an unforgettable experience with everything from the creative way he presents the food, down to the quality of the ingredients themselves”

“I think one of the most significant connections between enjoying food meticulously put together by passionate chefs that I love and my jewelry is the memories that are shared and created. Something that may trigger a special memory or have some kind of childhood significance. The kind of food we grow up eating determines our palettes, something that is passed down through generations like a special piece of jewelry.

There is also the often unexpected combination of materials and style. Using what people may consider traditional ingredients or materials to cook up something deliciously unexpected. As well as the attention to detail, there is also the diligence in finding the best ingredients possible, no matter how simple, to elevate the ordinary into extraordinary.”

”Upon landing in San Juan from freezing New York, I immediately went to the hotel pool by the sea and enjoyed empanadillas with a Medalla beer. “I grew up in an Italian family where everything revolved around food. My grandma would start making the pasta early on Sunday mornings and by the time we arrived at her house around 12 she was pouring the flour all over her kitchen counter and using her shiny metal pasta cutter machine to cut them into long strands or deliciousness. The sauce had been cooking since Saturday morning and the whole house smelled like an Italian restaurant. It was art. Just like creating jewelry, she was creating beauty, happiness. Her thick Italian gold bracelets always dirty with flour which she could care less. We would spend the whole afternoon sitting around the table eating, laughing, talking over each other and making memories that now bring a huge smile to my face. Unfortunately I haven’t been to Puerto Rico but can’t wait to visit you all at Reinhold!!!”

“Good food, like jewelry, knows how to touch people’s hearts! For me, chefs and well-crafted cuisine embody creativity and attention to detail, the very principles that guide my art in creating jewelry. Admiring their ability to delight the palate and touch the soul, I strive to offer with my jewelry a visual and tactile experience that goes straight to the heart. Our shared goal is to evoke emotions in people.

During a trip to Puerto Rico, I was deeply inspired by a local chef whose cuisine is based on sourcing the finest ingredients and rooted in tradition, yet strongly influenced by European and Eastern flavors. This philosophy mirrors my own approach: Italian by birth, enriched by global experiences, I blend tradition with innovation, using nature as a primary source to enhance my creations and bring to life a natural and refined luxury!”

“Beautifully crafted food and beautifully crafted jewellery share two of the most meaningful words to me and my work: beauty and craft. Anything can be simply beautiful, but when something is crafted - born from a feeling, a sense, later translated into an object or an experience - it goes beyond beautiful. It connects with you.

When I was in Puerto Rico I was offered the pleasure of tasting an array of plates based on my collections. They were the inspired, beautiful and deeply tasteful creations of Chef Clarissa Llenza. A night to remember!”

“I have always loved exploring different cultures through food. It’s a form of art that is about innovation, yet at the same time harnesses local traditions and history. I think about jewelry in a similar way. Tabayer is about finding a modern expression of talismans and amulets as an object of protection.

“We always gather and regroup around food to fuel our creativity after a day of meetings at the ateliers. And working in the hectic Grand Bazaar, the jewelry and culinary worlds are very much intertwined. There is an unmistakable common appreciation for the art behind each dish, the discipline required for the craft and the attention to detail that is necessary to bring to life each creation. We may cater to different senses but the end goal is the same—to create communal experiences that inspire and delight. Y nuestros platos puertorriqueños predilectos? “As a jewelry designer, I see a deep connection between beautifully crafted food and fine jewelry—both require a perfect balance of elements to create something truly memorable.

Just as a chef thoughtfully blends flavors, I combine metals and gemstones to craft pieces that tell a story.

“I think food has a special power to bring people together- it’s a shared experience that is nourishing not just to the body but also to the soul, and ultimately it’s an expression of love. In that way I find it can be similar to Jewelry- it has a unique ability to evoke memory and is shared as an expression of love.

“The artistry and dedication chefs pour into beautifully crafted food resonate deeply with TANE and profoundly influence and inspire our jewelry.

Both chefs and designers are storytellers, conveying emotions and experiences. A beautifully crafted dish or a piece of jewelry can transport someone, evoke cherished memories, and commemorate significant events.

We believe food and jewelry share the goal of creating meaningful experiences, celebrating life’s richness, and capturing moments that words alone cannot. This philosophy drives our passion for crafting tangible memories that can be cherished forever.”

“As childhood friends, we savored countless delicious meals in each other’s homes. As we grew older, we came to appreciate the family recipes and personal stories that made each dish so special. We found this same magic when we began designing jewelry together. Both chefs and designers chase that perfect mix of originality and tradition. “The creativity and dedication that go into culinary masterpieces inspire us to continually push the boundaries of our own work. We perceive a beautifully plated dish as a symphony of colors, textures, and flavors, much like our jewels, which harmoniously blend different elements to create a sense of elegance and unity. Our dinner experience at Santaella with the Reinhold team profoundly reminded us that, much like in jewelry design, the beauty of culinary art lies in the thoughtful combination of elements, resulting in creations that are both visually stunning and emotionally resonant. The way the chefs at Santaella transformed local ingredients into exquisite works of art resonated deeply with us, reinforcing our belief in the transformative power of creativity and meticulous attention to detail.”

“Chefs and beautifully crafted food hold a deep significance in my life and work as a jewelry designer. Just as a chef carefully selects ingredients to create a dish that evokes emotion and tells a story, I meticulously choose materials and design elements to create pieces that resonate with meaning and artistry. The attention to detail, the balance of flavors, and the pursuit of perfection in the culinary world are all elements that inspire a creative process. The experience of dining at the 1919 Restaurant in Puerto Rico, was an experience that remains vividly etched in my memory. The meal was not just a feast for the senses but also a journey through the rich cultural heritage of Puerto Rico, much like the stories I aim to tell through my jewelry. The flavors were bold yet refined, a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. I am a true foodie; I’m very passionate about exploring different cultures through their cuisine and it’s a source of inspiration for me. In my family, food has always been what brings us together—it’s how we connect and share our love. And it’s not just about the meal, it’s about the entire event. I love a beautifully set tablescape of linens, flowers, and candles. It’s those details that elevate the experience. I apply a similar mindset to my jewelry, paying very close attention to detail, and by bringing my personal experiences to life through my designs. “Coming from Indian origin, spices and flavors have been an integral part of my upbringing. Having a vegetarian lifestyle cooking has been an integral part in day-to-day life. I hold beautifully crafted food presented with joy and pride as the highest form of creativity.

For me cooking is an art form which allows expression that can be experienced by all five senses- Smell, Sight, Touch, Taste and Emotion. I have had the pleasure of experiencing Puerto Rican Cuisine on my various trips to the island over the years and it has been a beautiful and satisfying experience.

“Food, like jewelry, is an expression of love, connection, and craft. As an Italian, cooking for my wife and kids every day is my way of showing care, much like the thought and passion I put into designing jewelry. Both are about creating something meaningful that connects people and tells a story.

One of my most memorable experiences was at La Mallorquina in Old San Juan. On a warm Sunday afternoon, with live music, a cold Medalla in hand, and rain falling gently outside, the atmosphere was perfect. Just as with jewelry, that moment was crafted through details—the ambiance, the care in the food, the warmth of the space. Whether it’s a meal or a piece of jewelry, both are about creating connections, memories, and beauty in life’s simplest yet most profound moments.”

Finding things that can make huge statements and a big impact, while also staying simple, colorful, and elevated.”
