Back-to-Winning!

Everything was Just Beachy at MaKami this August!

There were flip-flops, board shorts, sand toys and sun hats as far as the eye could see. The staff and students at MaKami College had a ton of fun enjoying Beach Week August 2-6.

While Calgary got into the spirit all week with their best beach wear, Edmonton staff took things to a new and impressive level by participating in a little friendly competition for best decorated department! Those that follow MaKami College on social media and subscribers to our digital newsletter were asked to help us decide on a winner. Once the votes were in and the sand settled, the winner by a landslide was the Records department, their photo is featured to the top right!

Our next campus event is Frosh Week happening on September 26-19 - watch for details and help us celebrate Back-to-School and new beginnings! Everyone is invited to join in on the festivities!

Product of the Month

Save 20% off Lotion Bottles & Holsters

Streamline your massage therapy business and keep the necessities close at hand. Save 20% off all Lotion Bottles and holsters at the MaKami Store in September!

Helping out our Furry Friends at AARCS

This month, MaKami College is proud to support AARCs in a couple of different ways.

All month long, we will be collecting donations from the AARCs wish list (https://aarcs.ca/wish-list) at each campus. Find the bin in the student lounge at each campus, and drop your items off before September 30. Then we'll take your items over to help the great people at AARCS support pets until they find their furever homes. You can also make cash donations at Reception.

On September 17 Max will be locked up for the annual AARCS Jail and Bail event. We need to raise $3500 to bail Max out, so be sure to make your donation here: https://loom.ly/w_C3yNs on or before September 17th to get Max out of jail!

Meet Chintan

Chintan is the Lead Instructor of Pathology and also co-lead for Orthopedic Assessment in the ACMT program at the Edmonton Campus. He also helps to run the cadaver labs, and assists in practical classes. He started with MaKami in 2015 as a student in his second year and the rest is history!

Chintan loves learning and interacting with his colleagues and loves helping students learn, grow, and achieve their goals and dreams. With degrees in Chiropractic and Biology, and a certified Personal Training Specialist, MaKami has been a great opportunity to pass along his knowledge and share his enthusiasm for science.

When not on campus, Chintan is a crazy cat dad who loves basketball, movies, and music. His favourite genre is hip hop, but his favourite band is the Rolling Stones!

Study Tips: Snack on Brain Food!

When trying to concentrate or focus on your studies, sometimes you may want to reward yourself with a treat, or perhaps you feel too busy to cook something healthy and nutritious. What you may not realize is that what you eat can really impact your energy levels and ability to focus!

STUDYTIP! STUDYTIP!

Whatyoueatcanimpactyour energylevelsandabilitytofocus.

Doyourselfafavourandsnackon brainfoodsthatwillprovideaslow releaseofenergyoveralongperiod insteadofasugarrushandacrash causingyoutolosemotivation.

It is important to keep your body and brain fuelled with nutritious foods. It has been proven that some foods aid concentration and memory, such as fish, nuts, seeds, yogurt and blueberries. Foods high in processed sugars or fats can negatively impact your energy levels or give you a temporary spike in energy only to cause a sugar crash later causing you to lose motivation and energy.

While you’re studying, feed your body and mind a selection of good brain foods, and make sure to do the same on exam day. Eat a good meal before the test, based on foods that will provide a slow release of energy over a long period of time.

Flippin' Good Times

MaKami's Edmonton campus was excited to share some flap-jacks with students, staff and our community at the Bonnie Doon Campus on August 31. Our team has gotten pretty skilled at the art of pancake flipping, as our Dean, John Djordevic, masterly demonstrated!

Say hello to Racel!

Racel is part of the Calgary Reception team. She is originally from the Philippines, arriving in Calgary last April as an International Student.

You’ll find her in the evenings at our Calgary NE campus, as a master multitasker, greeting students, aiding clinic visitors and manning the phones to answer any questions that come to the college. She loves her interactions with the students, co-workers and the massage therapy clients.

She is the eldest of two siblings and really, really loves cats! When she was younger, her family would adopt stray cats, take care of them, and give them the love they deserved. She is also a Swiftie! Racel is a music lover, but loves country songs and old love songs the most!

Maria - Finding Success with Massage Therapy

Maria has worn many hats throughout her life - teacher, salesperson and day home worker to name a few. But she says none have been as personally and professionally fulfilling as her current career as a massage therapist.

Originally from Columbia, Maria came to Canada as a young adult in 2006. Shortly after moving here, she met her husband and together they began the journey of health and wellness.

One of the therapies they found most effective was massage therapy.

Maria graduated from the Calgary SW campus in 2020 and opened her successful home-based clinic, Nuga Best Canada.

Maria says she enjoys the independence and financial freedom her new career as a massage therapist has provided for her and is proud of how far she has come.
