Monumental MaKami Graduation Celebrations!

After two long years of waiting, we were all very excited to celebrate all of the graduates who completed their program at MaKami College between March 2020 and June 2022.

Graduates and their supporters gathered together on June 18 at the Edmonton Convention Centre and the Calgary Telus Convention Centre for an unforgettable celebration of perseverance, resiliency and dedication.

This was by far the biggest graduation we've ever seen at MaKami College. It was lovely to see graduates and their friends and family get to celebrate this momentous occasion.

Congratulations to all of our graduates, we are very proud of your accomplishments! Well done!

Offering the Public a Sneak Peek at MaKami Open Houses

This June MaKami held its first ever open houses across all three campuses! We wanted to give the public, and the friends and family of our students and staff the opportunity to stop by the college and see what life was like here at MaKami College.

Guests were welcomed with a BBQ lunch and some great swag giveaways. MaKami staff was available for campus tours and faculty were excited to talk to visitors about the schools programs and all of the things that make MaKami great.

We are already planning the next open house events, watch for more in the fall!

Nominate Your Fellow Students!

We know that everyday MaKami students demonstrate our MaKami student values through their actions and through the way they help other students or members of their community. We want to recognize these shining examples, but we need your help!

Is there someone you know who exemplifies one of our student values (Leadership, Innovation, Community and Inspiration)? If so, you can nominate them to win a Student Value Award. Our internal Student Values Committee will review all of the nominees, and winners will be recognized near the end of their program.

For more information or to nominate a fellow classmate for an award, visit: makamicollege.com/student-values

Meet the Staff Edmonton

Meet John

In case you are not familiar with him, meet John, the Dean of MaKami College. His role is broad, but his main focus is everything about the student experience -from listening to feedback and suggestions to coordinating between departments.

His favourite part of the job is seeing the positive transformation and impact that MaKami has on the lives of its students and staff.

In his spare time, John likes to do ‘typical dad stuff’ like pretending how to use power tools as an amateur wood worker and spending time with his wife and daughters. He is a big fan of bad dad jokes and puns – so please share one in the hallway, email them over or write them on the Edmonton suggestion board.

Study Tips: Organize a Study Group with Friends

Studying doesn’t have to be something that is hard, boring or something you dread. Get together with some classmates and friends for a study session and you’ll be amazed at how much you can learn while you’re having fun.

The key to a good study session is to set yourself up for the best possible results to learn the most information and put your time to good use. Here are a few guidelines you will want to follow to maximize your time and energy:

STUDYTIP! STUDYTIP!

Meet the Staff Calgary

Set a limit to the number of people: Meet with 5 people or less to ensure you are able to focus on the content instead of keeping the group focused on the task at hand.

Choose a good spot to meet: The best place to study with friends would be a spot that’s free of distraction, is quiet and tidy, and big enough that everyone can sit comfortably and spread out their study materials. Set a study agenda: Setting an agenda of what you need or want to accomplish before the study session will help your group with time management and prioritizing what everyone needs to work on the most. Celebrating all the Diversity of MaKami College

We've missed a lot of things over the last two years, so the MaKami College Social Committees were very excited to bring back the Multicultural and Diversity Day Potluck!

Students and staff at all three campuses were encouraged to dress up in clothing that represented their culture or ancestral background. In response to your feedback, theme day was extended to theme week - giving all students the chance to dress-up.

Both the Calgary and Edmonton Social Committees were also very excited to host the first campus wide potluck since the COVID shut downs. The selection of food was amazing - thank you to everyone who participated.

Congratulations to our first best dressed winners! Lisa Maxwell, Calgary SW; Kelly Guo, Calgary NE; Mechel Herrera, Edmonton.

Lena - Making her Massage Therapy Dreams Come True

Originally from Lithuania, Lena and her family moved to Ireland for a few years before moving to Canada.

“I always dreamed of doing massage therapy. Growing up, if my friends or family had issues with their body, I would always try to help, even though I didn’t really know what I was doing. As I got older, my friends would always say I needed to go to school to get trained in massage therapy, but I was reluctant because I thought I was too old to go back to school,” Lena admits. But ultimately she realized it was the best decision and gave it a try when she moved to Calgary.

She says her life changed drastically after graduating from MaKami College. At the age of 50, she says she’s happy with where she is in life.
