pulse of the community We here at Southlake Style are dedicated to supporting local businesses. It’s one of the reasons we are so excited to be collecting votes for our Readers’ Choice 2021, so don’t forget to support your favorite businesses before online voting closes on February 18. While you’ll have to wait to see those results in our April issue, this month we’re showcasing a selection of entrepreneurs, owners and leaders in “Open For Business.” Each of these men and women have their own stories, but they were drawn to this town thanks to the opportunities and sense of community it offers. We are proud, on the other hand, to showcase the results of another reader-submitted contest: Southlake Stylin’ Pets! Each featured good boy or girl has adorable quirks, but they all prove locals consider their pets to be a part of the family. As an over-the-top dog mom, I am happy to see I’m not the only avid pet lover here. Whether it's Jonesy’s mom rescuing him off the side of the road or the Priakos outfitting their yard to make Razor feel at home, there are plenty of readers who go above and beyond for their four-legged family members. If you’re looking for ways to make your fluffy family member’s day, check out our shopping section for picture-worthy pet supplies. Or if you are a patron of another local pet store in town, now’s the time to give them the recognition they deserve by voting in our Readers’ Choice. Happy reading!

The On-Screen Life Of Pets

P

ets hold a special place in our hearts. Whether Beethoven is making a mess, Benji is rescuing children or Snoopy is flying in his doghouse, pets and their silly shenanigans always make for tail-wagging entertainment. Walt Disney has no shortage of loveable canine companions. Nostalgic viewers can have a laugh thanks to the 101 Dalmatians swarming Cruella de Vil’s mansion, Bolt zapping his way through a superheroic adventure or Pluto licking Mickey Mouse senseless. Films like “The Aristocats” and “The Fox And The Hound,” on the other hand, show that our differences don’t define us. And that whether you crave the original version or the CGI remake of “The Lady And The Tramp,” spaghetti can bring us together. Real-life animals also leave a big impression, like Winn-Dixie sliding through the grocery store and Lassie running home. Other doggie tales like “Old Yeller,” “Hachi: A Dog’s Tale” and “Marley & Me” will leave your eyes watery while the hounds in “Eight Below” and “Balto” pull off daring rescues. “Babe,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “Uptown Girls” show pet pigs snorting their way through life, and “The Secret Life Of Pets” reveals what house pets do while their owners are away. And although the comical canines in “Scooby-Doo,” “Marmaduke” and “The Call Of The Wild” look faker than the live-action “Garfield” or “Cats” movies, that doesn’t make them any less loveable.

WHAT INSPIRED YOUR BUSINESS, ELLE BELLE? I had always loved the idea of working with animals. One day, I was scrolling through a Southlake local Facebook group when I saw a dog mom asking for recommendations for a fabulous pet sitter to take care of her fur babies. I immediately responded to the mom on the post, and some of my connections in Southlake vouched for me. And I got my first client. The very next day, we were up and running with our website! WHY DID YOU NAME IT ELLE BELLE? This business is a long-term passion project for me. We are not just pet sitters; we are advocates for pet adoption in the community, and we plan to one day offer a brick-and-mortar store with retail, experiences you can have with your dog and opportunities for dogs to be placed for adoption from local shelters. With that in mind, we named the company Elle Belle because we identify as an upscale brand. Elle is ‘she’ in French, and we proudly serve women who want the best service and care for pets. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? We had our second anniversary in December! WHAT SERVICES DOES ELLE BELLE OFFER? We currently offer daily dog walking, pet sitting visits, exotic pet sitting, overnight stays and ranch and equine sitting. We are a small, boutique service, and we currently have two employees and over 300 clients across DFW! WHAT DO YOUR DAY-TO-DAY RESPONSIBILITIES LOOK LIKE? One day I might be doing more office work or working with our nonprofit partners, developing ideas to help the animal welfare world. Other days I might be walking a pair of dogs, training a puppy, handling a snake or brushing horses. WHAT IS THE BEST PART OF OPENING ELLE BELLE? The best part of owning your own business is finding like-minded entrepreneurs, specifically women, who support one another. There is so much to be said for women in business empowering one another. WHAT MAKES SOMEONE A GOOD PET SITTER? Experience with a variety of pets and personalities is what makes a good pet sitter, but what makes a great pet sitter is being a genuinely caring and trustworthy person to animals and their owners.

PETS

Furry, spikey, fluffy or scaly, we love them all. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the finalists of our third annual Southlake Stylin’ Pets Photo Contest, sponsored by Creekside Pet Care Center. While there was stiff competition, these three pups, cat, guinea pig and pot belly pig stole our hearts.

MAUI THE BERNESE MOUNTAIN DOG After the Mosleys brought home Maui as a puppy three years ago, he quickly became a beloved member of the family. His mellow, charming personality makes him a great fit for Debra, Ed and their son Eddy’s lifestyles. “He thinks everyone is his friend,” Debra says. “He is very outgoing and friendly, but he’s also very well behaved, so he doesn’t run around and act crazy.” He even treats the 13-year-old as a puppy, demonstrating a little extra gentle care. While Maui has been known to get compliments while walking down the streets of Southlake, he is happiest when he’s surrounded by his family and has his stuffed bunny in tow.

TACO THE PEMBROKE WELSH CORGI Named after the family’s Grapevine restaurant, Vaquero Texas BBQ, Taco found his forever home with the Antolins in October. The full-bred pembroke Welsh corgi quickly showcased his spirited and sweet demeanor by playing with the family’s four kids and zooming around their home. The perky pup has mastered several basic commands and also knows when it’s time to be gentle with the little ones, making him the ideal addition to the family. When Taco is left to his own devices, you can find him either chewing on bully sticks or carrying around his favorite rope toy.

JONESY THE ORANGE TABBY CAT As the Williams were driving home from Mississippi, their two boys yelled that they saw a kitten on the side of the road. After whipping the car around and finding a 2-pound baby tabby cat trying to get food out of a beer can, Terri called the little guy over and loaded him into the car to take him back to Texas. Jonesy quickly became a welcome addition to the family. He now runs the show in the Williams house, providing an endless source of entertainment for both his human and pet family members. Whether he is playing with his toys or roughhousing with the family’s goldendoodle, he keeps the Williams household laughing.

RAZOR THE VIETNAMESE POT BELLY PIG He might not look snuggly, but cozying up to his mom, dad and sister Ainsley is a favorite pastime of Razor, a Vietnamese pot belly pig. Joining the Priakos family four and a half years ago, this portly pig loves to graze in the backyard, visit his canine neighbors and enjoys plenty of belly scratches. And like his five doggy siblings, food is the way to Razor’s heart. “Watching him get the zoomies and run around the yard is one of the funniest things you’ve seen,” Regan Priakos says. “I truly love him with all my heart, and he and I have a very special bond that is unlike any I’ve ever had with an animal.”

DITKA THE BLUE MERLE GREAT DANE Growing up a Bears fan, Andrea Earp always wanted to name her first pup after Mike Ditka. In October, that dream became a reality when her family brought home a blue merle great dane puppy. Ditka loves to go on adventures around town, take long car rides and cuddle on the couch with his littermate Lombardi — another Bears reference. “Ditka is the light of the show,” Andrea says. “He is always incorporating everyone in the room whether it be him doing spins or going crazy with his brother!” The loyal pup may be stubborn at times, but he loves showing off his sassy, energetic personality.

FIDGET THE GUINEA PIG Guinea pigs may not have reputations for traveling, but the Green family ensures Fidget is always along for the journey. The 4-yearold social fluff ball has a big personality in a little body. When she’s out, she enjoys sitting on the floor in the Green house, watching her pet siblings: two cats and a dog. But when she’s in her cage, she enjoys getting exercise by placing her little red barn in the center of her area and running around it. “Even from her cage, she makes it known that she is an active part of the family,” owner Paige Green says.

COMMUNITY SUPPORTS DRAGON FOOTBALL The community of Southlake rallied around the Dragons when they earned a spot in the state championship game, organizing a Green Out for Friday, January 15. “Carroll Athletic Booster Club worked with Mayor Hill to develop it,” CABC president Bill Webb says. “She wanted to know what she could do to support the Dragons. We suggested this idea, and she took it and ran with it.” The fountains in front of city hall turned green while trees all over Southlake Town Square were tied with green ribbons. People from all over the city donned their homes in green decor and everyone wore their Dragon spirit gear. “The green was everywhere, and I stood out and just thought how great it is to be in what is really a small town with all the luxuries of a big city,” Bill says.

CARROLL FALLS TO WESTLAKE IN STATE CHAMPIONSHIP During the Dodge Bowl state championship game, Austin Westlake defeated Southlake Carroll 52-34 to become the 6A Division 1 state champions. Though the Dragon offense shined during the first half, Austin Westlake brought the heat during the second half with great showings by both their defense and offense. The Southlake Carroll Dragons ended their season with a 12-2 overall record and a 6-0 district record. This season also marks the third consecutive year the Dragons have made it to the playoffs. Following the end of the season, multiple Dragons won 4-6A All-District Awards. NINETEEN DRAGONS WIN 4-6A ALL-DISTRICT AWARDS Following the regular season and playoffs come awards, and Southlake Carroll players are racking them up. Nineteen Dragons have received 4-6A All-District Awards. Fifteen Dragons were named to the 4-6A All-District First Team — eight on offense and six on defense. Senior Joe McFadden was also named to the 4-6A All-District First Team as a kicker and punter, and junior cornerback Max Reyes was named to the 4-6A All-District Second Team Defense. Four Dragons also won individual awards: Owen Allen was unanimously voted the 4-6A All-District MVP, Landon Samson was named the 4-6A All-District Offensive Player of the Year, Cinque Williams was named the 4-6A All-District Defensive Player of the Year and Logan Anderson was named the 4-6A All-District Defensive Newcomer of the Year. The Carroll coaching staff was also named the 4-6A All-District Coaching Staff of the Year.

CISD SUPERINTENDENT PROMOTES UNITY, EXCELLENCE AT FIRST SCHOOL BOARD MEETING Dr. Lane Ledbetter made his biggest priority clear during his first school board meeting — bringing the community together. After a week under his belt as CISD’s new superintendent, Dr. Ledbetter opened the January 11 board meeting stating how much he’s enjoyed refamiliarizing himself with the district. The Dragon alum stated how proud he is to put his own kids through the district and is happy to see the community engaging with them. Dr. Ledbetter went on to state he is aware of divisions created due to the Cultural Competence Action Plan. Dr. Ledbetter emphasized the only way the community is going to overcome its differences is by sitting down and talking to one another. “We aren’t going to solve the problem in this district on social media,” Dr. Ledbetter says. “We’re not going to solve the problem through public comment. We’re not going to solve it in the courtroom. It’s going to be solved by bringing people together in this community and sitting down with the willingness to work together.” Dr. Ledbetter then went into his superintendent’s report, laying out a two-month entry plan where he will visit each campus until February 5 and present a summary report during the board meeting on March 8. He also presented an update to COVID-19 in the district, saying that there were currently 81 active cases and more than 3,000 students are enrolled in the Dragon Virtual Academy. “My hope is there is a desire among everyone to come to a productive solution — to create unity and community,” Dr. Ledbetter says. FORMER DRAGON AMONG FINALISTS FOR LOU GROZA AWARD Former Dragon Jake Oldroyd was named one of the finalists for the Lou Groza Award, which is given to college football’s top place-kicker. Currently attending Brigham Young University, Jake was a finalist along with place-kickers from the University of Miami and the University of Alabama. Jake “finished the year a perfect 13-for-13 on field goals, the most by an FBS kicker without a miss this season. More than half of those kicks came from at least 40 yards out, including three from over 50,” the Lou Groza Award website says. While the award went to the place-kicker from the University of Miami, Jake Oldroyd did win the Lou Groza fan vote.

DAWSON MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDS CARDBOARD BOAT The Carroll ISD school board got a lot of goodies for School Board Appreciation Month last month. But the biggest gift didn’t come in an envelope or a basket — it came in the form of a giant cardboard boat built by the kids at Dawson Middle School. Dawson Middle School principal Ryan Wilson says the school was collecting cardboard to make miniature boats for staff development day in the spring. Originally planning to build the boats and race them in the pool, their plans were put to a halt when the district shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Ryan was told that the theme for School Board Appreciation Month would be “Sailing To Success,” he and the students got to work building the giant cardboard boat in the cafeteria. Nicknamed the U.S.S. Resilient, the boat is retrofitted with a plank, hull, sail and signed with “thank you” messages to the board by the students. DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE DOWN FROM 2017 IN CISD Illicit drug and alcohol use in Carroll ISD has gone down by 13.1% since 2017, according to the district’s 2019-2020 drug and alcohol use survey. Since 2005, the school district has partnered with the Texas Department of State Health Services and Texas A&M University’s Public Policy Research Initiative to conduct voluntary surveys on drug and alcohol use among middle and high school students in Carroll ISD. Five surveys have been conducted between 2005 and 2020, with the most recent survey collecting 1,131 responses from Dawson Middle School, Carroll High and Senior High School. According to the survey, the results reveal a decrease in drug and alcohol use in four out of five categories between 2017 and 2020. Tobacco use has dropped from 19.9% to 18.3%, alcohol use has dropped from 45.8% to 38.8%, drug use has dropped from 15% to 7.1% and inhalant use has dropped from 7.7% to 5.8%. The only category that saw an increase was marijuana use, which grew from 13.5% in 2017 to 18.8% in 2020, according to the results. Assistant Superintendent for Student Services Janet McDade says that the administration will work with School Resource Officers to potentially implement curriculum on the risks of marijuana use.

GRACIE ANDERSON NAMED MISS SOUTHLAKE University of Texas at Austin sophomore Gracie Anderson assumed the position of Miss Southlake last month. This follows the announcement of Miss Southlake 2020 Bryton Bonacquisti’s resignation, which was effective December 9, 2020. Gracie grew up in the Pflugerville area and previously competed in the Miss Texas Outstanding Teen program. After she aged out of the teen version, she started competing in Miss competitions throughout the state. Gracie, who participated in the original Miss Southlake 2020 competition, is currently working toward her degree in neuroscience and will pursue a career in occupational therapy after graduating. She hopes to eventually work with children with disabilities. With a platform focused on fostering youth leadership, Gracie aspires to connect to the Southlake community and influence the next generation of leaders. SOUTHLAKE SALES TAX REVENUE INCREASED IN 2020 Although it was a tough year for many Texas businesses, Southlake still managed to increase its sales tax revenue despite all of the challenges it faced. While many cities lost revenue thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, Southlake received $2.45 million in sales tax revenue in December and $29 million from 2020 as a whole, according to the state comptroller’s office. That’s a 2.13% increase from 2019’s revenue of $28.7 million. Deputy economic director Daniel Cortez says economic initiatives such as Southlake’s $1 million business relief grant program has helped make up for revenue losses the city may have experienced last year. SOUTHLAKE NAMED SAFEST CITY IN TEXAS Southlake was named the safest city in Texas and the 22nd safest city in the nation in MoneyGeek’s Safest Cities and Towns of 2020. Every year, MoneyGeek calculates the safest cities and towns in the nation by analyzing crime statistics and the costs associated with each crime. Out of more than 50 Texas cities to place on the 989-city list, Southlake was the only one to crack the top 25. According to the results, the violent crime rate for Southlake is 30.3, and the property crime rate is 1,171. That averages to an $84 crime cost per capita and a $2,769 total cost of crime for Southlake’s 33,049 population. Other Texas cities to make the top 100 include Keller at 36th, Flower Mound at 61st, Friendswood at 80th and Wylie at 81st. To view the full list, visit MoneyGeek.com.

The group delivered more than 50 meal baskets to families in need around the area in November. On December 20, the group assembled gift baskets filled with candy canes, cookies and brownie mixes and donated them to local nonprofits. CSHS FINE ARTS COMPLEX OPENS A year after construction originally started, the new Carroll Senior High School fine arts complex opened on January 4, just in time for the spring semester. Approved in 2017 as part of a $208 million bond proposition, the CSHS fine arts complex is a new facility that provides additional band and choir halls, classrooms, offices, practice rooms and a 700-seat performance auditorium. While the project is still under construction, Carroll band and choir has access to the northern section of the facility and started the spring semester in its practice rooms. Facilities still undergoing construction include the new band hall, the percussion storage and the color guard locker room. Those rooms are estimated to be completed around mid-March, while the auditorium is projected to be completed in late April.

WILLHOITE’S CELEBRATES 40 YEARS IN BUSINESS This year, Willhoite’s in Grapevine has a lot to celebrate. The buffet restaurant celebrated 40 years in business on January 17. Willhoite’s building originally opened as a dry goods store in 1914 before serving as a theater and an automotive station. The building was then purchased in 1980 and renovated into the restaurant it is today, according to a press release. Willhoite’s hosted a birthday celebration on January 13 and offered a $4 lunch buffet, according to a press release. “Willhoite’s may be turning 40, but we are proud to have stayed true to our roots — a fun, family restaurant with good food and reasonable prices. During the past 40 years, so many people have made memories here and celebrated momentous occasions, including reunions, anniversaries, weddings and in some cases, divorces,” co-owner Eric Parker says via press release. “Being an independent, familyowned restaurant during 2020 was certainly a challenge, and we are very grateful to our loyal customers who continued to support us. We are proud to be one of the oldest businesses on Main Street and offer a glimpse into Grapevine’s history.”

Former Emerald Belles Captain Takes On The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders

J

essica Bowman has always been passionate about performing. The former Emerald Belles captain went on to lead The University of Texas Pom Squad, but she always knew where she wanted to end up — with the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders. After a unique auditioning process and training camp in a bubble, Jessica was selected as one of 11 DCC rookies to join the team. While it involved lots of long hours and commitment, Jessica is quick to thank those who helped her get to where she is today. I STARTED DANCING… when I was about 3 years old. I danced competitively for eight years and trained at Dance Institute Performing Arts Center in Austin, as well as Artistry in Motion Performing Arts Center in North Richland Hills. In high school, I loved being a part of the Emerald Belles Drill Team. WHILE I ORIGINALLY WANTED TO JOIN THE EMERALD BELLES... to build friendships, what I found in the end was a new family. I got to see firsthand what leadership really looks like in our director Melissa Page. She has built a world-class program, and her leadership and mentorship is something I continue to draw on to this day. I could not be more proud of the Belles today with everything they have accomplished and am honored to call myself an alumni. I MOVED TO SOUTHLAKE… my sophomore year of high school, and Lacey Munoz was my drill team captain on the Emerald Belles. I looked up to her from day one — her genuine nature made me feel so welcomed and her selfless leadership style is one I aspire to emulate. After she auditioned and became a DCC following her high school senior year, I was inspired to do the same. However, at the end of my senior year, I was accepted into my dream school, The University of Texas at Austin, and I felt it was a challenging opportunity I could not pass up. Throughout my time at UT, I learned and grew so much, making lasting friendships, taking leadership positions on campus and continuing my passion for dance and performance. I truly felt blessed to have achieved all I did in college, but auditioning for DCC was always on my mind. THIS YEAR’S AUDITION PROCESS… was unlike any other. There was a lot of uncertainty going into it with the new video audition and not knowing when or if training camp would even be possible with COVID. Out of over 1,500 applicants, I was one of 20 new candidates to be invited into training camp. Each round was a little nerve-racking to press submit and wait for the results, but the final training camp announcement was by far the most exciting! Even through the nerves of it all, having the chance to go for this long-time dream of mine, even in the midst

of a pandemic, was the opportunity of a lifetime and something I will never forget. MY TRAINING CAMP... experience is something I will forever be thankful for, and I’ll never forget the moment when I found out I was one step closer to making my dream become a reality. We had to quarantine for several days before entering the sequestration period at the Gaylord in Grapevine, which we called the bubble. When we got to the bubble, we each had our own room, were served packaged meals and had access to hand sanitizer on every corner. We also had our temperatures taken daily and took a COVID test every other day. I was so impressed with how comfortable and safe they were able to make me feel while I was there. TRAINING CAMP... was definitely high pressure and a little stressful at times, but I wouldn’t trade my experience for anything. Being surrounded by so many exceptional, qualified women was such an honor and was so much fun getting to dance with and learn from everyone there. When the veterans arrived at the bubble, I was just in awe of them. They were not only incredibly talented and beautiful but were so encouraging and helpful throughout my entire experience. For me, I think the most important thing to remember was to stay positive, have fun and have faith that the Lord has a great plan for my life. I would always pray that whatever happens, happens for a reason and that my passion for dancing and performing would shine through. WHEN I MADE THE TEAM… I shed a few happy tears! I was just so excited and could not believe my dream had become a reality. I felt like all my hard work had paid off and was thankful beyond words knowing I had such a unique opportunity of a lifetime ahead of me. HAVING THE HONOR OF WEARING… the iconic DCC uniform, performing in AT&T Stadium, cheering for America’s Team — it was everything I thought it would be and more! Earning those stars and boots felt so rewarding and performing at my very first Cowboys game as a DCC is a memory I will cherish forever.

THESE INDUSTRY LEADERS ARE MAKING NAMES FOR THEMSELVES IN SOUTHLAKE

F

rom the food and drink industry to the health care community, there are several Black business owners and executives leaving an impact on Southlake. These five leaders have distinct backgrounds, talents and inspirations that helped them develop their own brands, but despite their differences, they were all drawn to Southlake. And this city is better for their ventures.

EMMITT’S CATERING

Before he was tall enough to reach the stove, Brandon Emmitt’s passion for cooking emerged. “As a kid, my dad did most of the cooking,” Brandon says. “So watching my dad cook in the kitchen, I learned to develop a passion for cooking, for food.” After graduating from college — the only one out of his siblings to do so — Brandon started out in the industry as a dishwasher. Working for different chefs, Brandon soon realized he wanted to start his own business. “I came from nothing,” Brandon says. “I always had this thought and always felt that I was doing most of the work and the chef was taking most of the money home. I felt as if I can do the work...so why just work for somebody else when I can do it myself? I’ve been cooking for 14 years. I was just ready to go ahead and do my own thing.” In 2014, Brandon started his own catering business: Emmitt’s Catering. Based in Southlake since 2016, Brandon caters everything from graduations and weddings to family gatherings and corporate events. He cooks anything and everything a client wants, but his popular dishes include prime rib, seafood pasta and fajitas. Never one to forget where he came from, Brandon cooks from the heart, just like his dad. “It just wasn’t a meal for the family. My dad actually enjoyed [cooking],” Brandon says. “And the spark for me was seeing his passion. Watching him taking it seriously, it made me take it to heart. So I cook from my heart.” Brandon now cooks for clients throughout the Metroplex. “When I first started out, I never imagined being on this level,” Brandon says. “To see me today is like, ‘Wow.’ I always believed in myself, but I never believed my business was going to grow this fast in a short period of time.” And for budding entrepreneurs, Brandon is more than happy to be a role model. “I pray and hope someone sees me and as they see the things that I do, it gives them motivation and inspiration,” Brandon says. “If I can do it, they can do it.” FEB 21 • 59

GRADUATE COFFEE

In July 2020, Graduate Coffee stepped into the Southlake scene, providing delicious bites and a hub for locals to collaborate. Behind it all is owner Brandon Freeman. As a pastor, Brandon says building community has always been very important to him. “I’m a community-driven type of person,” Brandon says. “I feel like the reality of life is you do life in a circle. Life is not meant to be lived alone, so I wanted to have a beacon and open up something where people can come together.” Before opening up Graduate Coffee, Brandon sold his own cold brew to family and friends. And though he aspired to start his own business, he didn’t seriously entertain the idea of opening a brick and mortar due to the financial obligations. But when the opportunity to have a physical location presented itself, he put faith above fear. “It was still a hard thing that I had to decide that I want to take this chance,” Brandon says. “I took the risk to do it.” In the spring of 2020, Brandon started forging the path toward opening. After securing his location in June, Brandon pushed past the fear to follow his dreams. “It was scary because being a young Black man trying to open up a business in the middle of a pandemic knowing I don’t have a lot of cushion financially, didn’t have a lot of support,” Brandon says. “I was nervous. I was scared. And I just said, ‘Hey, we’re in it. We can’t back out of it now. We gotta go for it.’” Graduate Coffee has indeed become a community hub in its first seven months of business. Brandon says school board members and city councilmembers are among those who often meet there. And as for being Black-owned, Brandon says it means everything. “It means possibility for my children,” Brandon says. “It means possibility for my culture...it means possibility for our city. It’s a big deal.” When he first opened Graduate Coffee, Brandon didn’t want to be labeled as a Black-owned business, scared it would hinder his growth. “But I had to realize the reality of it is I’m Black, and I come from poverty. I come from nothing. And to be in this space that I am right now is nothing short of amazing and a miracle,” Brandon says. “People don’t understand how hard I had to work to get to where I am where another person may not have to work as hard.”

PRISM DERMATOLOGY

Being a physician is about more than making diagnoses and writing prescriptions; it’s about being there for others and making a difference. That’s why Rawn Bosley opened Prism Dermatology in 2019 — to help change people’s lives. A board-certified dermatologist and medical director, Rawn was in medical school for three years before he was introduced to dermatology. Rawn was intrigued that one specialty would allow him to be a surgeon, pathologist and pediatrician, offering him a great deal of variety. For several years, Rawn worked with multiple physicians around the country. But he then saw an opportunity to open his own practice in Southlake. “I was granted the opportunity to help open an innovative dermatology practice in a rapidly growing city,” Rawn says. “As a dermatologist with training in aspects of peSOUTHLAKESTYLE.COM

diatric, surgical and cosmetic dermatology, the Southlake community fit perfectly with my professional aspirations.” At Prism, Rawn makes it a point to conduct his own full-body skin examinations, carry out nonsurgical skin treatments and perform all injectable procedures himself. When he isn’t tending to a patient, Rawn is either producing his health podcast, “The Skin Scoop” or making media appearances on Fox and WFAA’s “Good Morning Texas.” “A physician’s role in the community is to serve,” Rawn says. "The era that we live in allows physicians to impact others outside of our immediate communities. Whether via social media or traditional avenues such as medical research, we have a responsibility to inform and educate others to improve their health and well-being.” Rawn says improving lives motivates him to elevate his practice every day, and he's grateful to have been accepted by the Southlake family. "We not only provide medical services but also help foster relationships,” Rawn says. “The families of the city have embraced us. The business community has been very supportive. The medical community has also been invaluable in helping me provide high-quality care for my patients. We are proud of how we have been received by the Southlake community.”

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER

Shanda Wright and her husband Ralph were both raised by teachers, giving them a passion for education. Today, Shanda leads other families’ children through their studies as the executive director of the Huntington Learning Center. Opening in June 2019, Shanda was introduced to the Huntington brand after her husband was laid off from his job. Drawn to Huntington’s personalized instruction, afterschool programs and SAT and ACT prep, Shanda saw a unique opportunity to support the Carroll ISD community in a new way. “It was the perfect time to step out on faith and fulfill a dream of entrepreneurship,” Shanda says. “Education has always been at the forefront of our minds. By choosing a business that focuses on education and community involvement, we are able to fulfill our passion for education by helping students obtain the best education possible.” As executive director, Shanda is in charge of programming and supporting kids through a variety of subjects FEB 21 • 61

including reading, writing, math and science. In Huntington’s first year of business, Shanda says the community feedback has been outstanding and that they have received an outpouring of support from the city and the Southlake Chamber of Commerce. But before its first anniversary, COVID-19 forever changed Shanda’s business model. Huntington was forced to close its center last March and dealt with enrollment losses. Thankfully, the center quickly adjusted by offering a virtual option for its one-on-one tutoring and exam preparation services. “We have been faced with uncertainty as we navigate through the global pandemic,” Shanda remarks. “But we have chosen to focus on our students and the community by continuing to provide the best educational resources to them.” Shanda says she takes pride in being a minority small business owner and contributing to the backbone of the economy. But more important than that, she’s proud to help kids through their own educational journeys. “My favorite part of the job is seeing the progress of our students — the confidence they have gained, the skill gaps that they once had close, the increase of their scores that allows them to attend the university and college of their choice and the smiles on their faces,” Shanda says. “I love watching how the center gives kids their love of school back.”

Growing up in Fort Worth, Johnny Wimbrey always knew he would be successful. He just didn’t know how. Despite living in poverty and being surrounded by violence at a young age, Johnny made a name for himself as an insurance agent. He started traveling across the country to help other agencies train their personnel. That fire to inspire others and share his story of overcoming obstacles led Johnny into the world of public speaking. “I had a heart to help people,” Johnny says. “I then realized you can get paid to speak. It’s a career. That’s where my international success came in.” While jetting around the globe and speaking to countless crowds, Johnny saw an opportunity to build a brand and provide mentorship to those who want to learn how to share their voices. “I had a mentor help me find myself. He helped me find a voice within me,” Johnny says. “While traveling, I saw people in Singapore are exactly the same as people in California. You start realizing that we all want the same thing. We want to feel good about who we are. Success comes from the inside.” He shared his story and vision for success on a broader scale in the bestselling book “From the Hood to Doing Good” as well as through his business, Wimbrey Training Systems. The mentorship-focused organization provides educational systems, personal coaching and training to help entrepreneurs, as well as larger companies, improve their bottom line. After building up a list of clients, Wimbrey Training Systems moved its headquarters out of Johnny’s Southlake home into a brick and mortar in Southlake Town Square’s Spaces in 2018. While COVID-19 impacted everyone, Johnny says several of his mentees, as well as his core business, have thrived this year. “Crisis normally drives my business because people are more open-minded,” Johnny says. “Those individuals have been more hungry over this past year.” Johnny is also thriving, releasing his latest book “Building a Millionaire Mindset” at the end of last year. In it, Johnny shares the secret of not only gaining but also maintaining success. Johnny also says he believes it’s easy to keep that mindset sharp when in a motivational community like Southlake. “The innovation of Southlake is contagious,” Johnny says. “I think it would be very hard to live somewhere like Southlake and not be motivated to start a business — to do something that’s generational.” SOUTHLAKESTYLE MAGAZINE

Building Connections With Animals

T

he summer of 2020 was unique to say the least. Going into my sophomore year, I knew college was quickly approaching, and I needed to start preparing. Since I was young, I have had a passion for animals and wanted to become a veterinarian. Because when I was about 6 years old, my family adopted a border collie puppy named Baye. Sadly, the puppy, who was born in a puppy mill, died of parvo at a very young age. I would never wish this experience on anyone, and I knew I had to prevent this from happening to others. Through my veterinary practice, I hope to save animals with parvo, along with other life-threatening conditions. I wish I could help every animal in need and end their suffering. By becoming a veterinarian, I can try to help some live better lives, and knowing that brings me comfort. So when I was thinking of what I could do to prepare myself for becoming a veterinarian and what leadership positions would help me stand out on college applications, I started a Carroll club, Animal Service Club, for students who aspire to pursue a career centered on veterinary sciences or have a passion for animals. I wanted to not only regularly volunteer at an animal shelter but also help connect other animal lovers with service opportunities. Even those who don’t want to be vets are welcome. I was overwhelmed with excitement when more than 50 students wanted to join the club. Turns out, ani-

mals are a great way to bring CHS and CSHS students together. We have already done many service projects this year, like working with the horses at Ride With Pride in Southlake, volunteering at the Humane Society of North Texas in Keller and hosting a fundraiser for not only our club but also local shelters. One of our bigger projects included making holiday bandanas for the Humane Society of North Texas pets who were participating in its annual holiday adoption event at the Will Rogers Arena. I thought it would be a great idea to make bandanas that said “Adopt me!” on them, bringing attention to these animals and hopefully helping them find their forever homes. It was not as easy as it seemed. First, we held a fundraiser to collect the funds we needed for the supplies. We sold super cute sweatshirts for $30 each, which helped us raise enough money that we were even able to donate the leftovers to local shelters. After taking the money out of our school account, we selected the fabrics from Hobby Lobby and made 100 bandanas of various sizes. All that work paid off after we saw the animals sporting them at the event. What started as a way to help me with college applications became so much more. Creating and running the Animal Service Club definitely isn’t easy, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. I love getting to help animals and connect aspiring vets or animal lovers with service opportunities.

home STYLE Primary Suite Paradise

B

efore the pandemic, time spent in the primary suite was saved for getting ready in the morning and turning in at night. But like everything else, our relationships with our rooms changed. Taking a few minutes away from helping kids with virtual school and indulging in a short break from the WFH office all became reasons to sneak away to your primary suite in 2020. So it’s time to splurge on some luxurious upgrades. From installing an upscale showerhead for maximum relaxation to creating a reading nook, here are some primary suite upgrades that will turn your bedroom into a paradise.

UPGRADING THE FIXTURES Upgrading the fixtures in your primary suite can range from the DIYness of installing a new showerhead to ordering the freestanding soaking tub you’ve been dreaming about. For those who love to tackle projects on their own, upgrade your showerhead to one that imitates the rain and offers a range of water pressures. Installing a tub is a bit more involved, but it’s definitely worth the money for those who enjoy a good soak. With these additions, the bathroom will now become a respite from the day’s stresses. ADDING SOME HEAT While they may seem extra, there are some upgrades that are worth the cost — one of those is heated bathroom floors. Nothing is worse than those seconds spent getting out of the shower and running over to wrap yourself in a warm towel. That sprint is a thing of the past with this splurge-worthy addition. A less-expensive option for keeping your bathroom cozy may feature heated bathroom mats or a towel warmer, but your future self will thank you for taking the time to indulge in this steamy upgrade. SITTING ROOM SERENITY Especially now, when pandemic life has shrunk our social circles, having a room to recede to for relaxation is so necessary. That’s why adding a sitting room to your suite is the move. Start small by finding some plush chairs and blanket ladder to place in a corner of your bedroom. Over time, you can add to the sitting area with an electric fireplace, bookshelves and even a small space for a coffee station. Pretty soon, you’ll be hard-pressed to leave your primary suite. FINISHING IT RIGHT Big renovations can feel scary, especially when your routine is already upended by a pandemic. So a small but immediate upgrade can be simply changing out the finishes on your chests, dressers and bathroom vanities. Whether you go with matte black pulls or spring for fancy crystal knobs, all it takes is an idea, a trip to a home improvement store and a screwdriver. This little change can feel like a big one after you see its lasting impact on your entire space.

he Dallas dining community has a new culinary leader. Eataly Dallas opened in NorthPark Center last December, offering exquisite plates, delicious products and educational opportunities to Italian cuisine enthusiasts. After walking into the first floor of the 48,000-square-foot market, your eye will jump from one unique offering to the next. With three restaurants, a gran bar, a takeaway counter, butcher, wine section and much more, there’s not one right way to explore Eataly. Eataly business partner Alex Saper says that Dallas’ vibrant restaurant community made the brand feel confident about expanding into the new market, knowing it would be embraced by the Metroplex’s foodies.

“After Dallas was named ‘Bon Appetit’s’ ‘Best Restaurant City of the Year’ in 2019, we knew we made the right choice because if you look at the restaurants highlighted in that feature, there were so many unique concepts and global cuisines that we saw Eataly succeeding in that bustling restaurant environment,” Saper says. “And then if you look at Texas, there is such a rich agricultural environment that could supply our store with the local produce that we seek in each of our stores, both to sell as retail and use in all of our restaurants.” With three restaurant concepts — Terra, La Pizza & La Pasta and Il Pastaio di Eataly — guests have a plethora of fresh options to choose from. Terra, located on the third floor, centers its dining room around a wood-burn-

ing Italian grill, where chefs cook over open flames. By highlighting quality cuts, like the local A Bar N Ranch Wagyu steak in the Tagliata di Manzo, guests are sure to enjoy hearty yet satisfying bites after making their selections. And with fish dishes like its whole flounder and coal-seared Nordic Blu salmon, everyone can find something worth sinking their teeth into. Craving pasta? Head to Il Pastaio di Eataly’s bar to enjoy a bowl of one of its delicious regional pasta dishes, created from scratch each day. The Agnolotti del Plin — pinched pasta pouches filled with roasted veal shank, housemade Italian sausage, roasted sugo, soffritto, escarole, coppa and Parmigiano — provides the rich flavors you expect out of the dish. The Tajarin, on the other hand, are crafted with a higher proportion of egg yolks, giving each strand its delicate texture. More traditional favorites can be found at La Pizza & La Pasta, where pizzaioli (pizza makers) show off their dough-slinging skills before diners’ eyes. Each Neapolitan pizza features fresh toppings, like the Bufalotta that’s complete with Buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomatoes, Rovagnati Prosciutto di Parma, Grana Padano, extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil. After enjoying a full meal, or for those just coming to shop, the expansive marketplace ensures guests can take home any of the ingredients they fell in love with during their dining experience. “An important part of Eataly’s philosophy is ‘we cook what we sell and we sell what we cook,’ so you can purchase the flour we use to make our breads, or pizza dough or the handmade pasta we made for your Ravioli in Il Pastaio,” Saper says. There are more than 10,000 imported and local products lining the shelves within the market. And while browsing through the rows of speciality olives and pestos, guests will see more than 500 signs, each offering context and history to the stories behind these items. Don’t let the numbers intimidate you. LOCALFLAVOR good eats

Coming Home To Harvest Hall

Grapevine’s Newest Food Hall Offers Bites For Everyone Finding a restaurant everyone loves is a challenging task. Someone prefers Italian over Mediterranean while others have a hankering for a good burger. Now, everyone can be satisfied at Grapevine’s first food hall, Harvest Hall. Located inside of the city’s new hotel, Hotel Vin, Harvest Hall will open this month with seven foodie concepts ready to curb any craving — Chick & Biscuit, Spuntino, Easy Slider, Arepa TX, ZaTaR, Monkey King Noodle Co. and Main Line Coffee Bar. “We wanted to make sure we were complementing Main Street,” Hotel Vin and Harvest Hall Managing Director Tom Santora says. “And not competing with Main Street.” Locals are sure to love Chick & Biscuit — a new Southern food concept brought to you by the chef behind Grapevine’s Mason & Dixie. And you may recognize the flavors at Spuntino, a delectable Italian stall put together by the owners of Colleyville’s Loveria Caffe. Because nothing tastes better than supporting local chefs. The delicious dining doesn’t stop there. Burger enthusiasts will quickly get to know Easy Slider, a gourmet slider stand that gained an impressive following in Deep Ellum. For those with a hankering for Mexican food, Arepa TX is here to serve. The fast casual restaurant serves Latin cuisine that can satisfy any craving. “They’re all so different on purpose,” Tom says. “We were picky, and I think it all worked out.” Don’t fret if you’re worried about breaking your healthy eating habit. Harvest Hall’s ZaTaR brings Mediterranean food to the table, serving up delicious bites that will fit with any diet. From lamb kabobs to falafel to all the hummus you can eat, this addition to the food hall will make your taste buds sing. Monkey King Noodle Co. is bringing Asian street food to Harvest Hall. The Dallas foodie favorite will offer everything from hand-pulled noodles to soup dumplings. Last but certainly not least, brunch lovers can enjoy all the coffee shop goodness thanks to Main Line Coffee Bar, serving everything from luxurious espressos to delectable pastries. With all these options, Harvest Hall ensures guests don’t just visit once. So whether you find a dish you keep coming back to or try something new with every visit, Harvest Hall is here to satisfy.
