By the time you read this we will be into our first event of the season. To get ready for this we have had a major push on the hill to meet the requests of the MSA, which has involved the raising of the bank on the left hand side from Crossing, more tyres and protection at Bottom Ess and also at Triangle, plus various barriers which have been tucked into hedges to help keep the appeal of Shelsley Walsh.

It is looking like a cracking season ahead with lots of interest across the board for activities at Shelsley which all help go towards the improvements that we set out to achieve each year.

The Paddock Office has been given a new lick of paint and some repairs along with the Jack Rohl Hut and the Granary.

As I write this today it is with great sadness to hear that Ian Harper passed away on Sunday. I didn't know Ian as long as many others but he gave me great support of the new ideas to take Shelsley forward. He will be greatly missed.

Plans for this year’s Classic Nostalgia are coming along well with lots more interest from car clubs, some of whom are celebrating anniversaries. We are also delighted to announce that the BBBF Lancaster Bomber will make a flypast on Sunday and the amazing stunt plane will be with us on both days. There will also be more great music from new acts as well as a great array of cars to admire.

Don Cooper

Sadly, we report that Don Cooper died on 13th February 2015. Many will have known him as a great classic hill climb supporter and competitor, in his all-white MGB (now owned by Charles Boulton) and later in an ex-works MGF. But there was much more to Don. He was a successful business entrepreneur, yachtsman, clay pigeon shot, fly fisherman and, in his younger days, a 750 racer.

Don was always a gentleman and showed great interest in the well-being and happiness of his family and friends. Even though latterly he suffered with illness, he treated it with dignity, often responding to greetings with, “I’m fine, how are you today”.

Don loved his MGB and could be relied upon to attack each hill climb vigorously, using the skills honed by seven years of racing his 750 Terrier, to wring out the very best performance from his car.

He became an accomplished yachtsman and for many years he, his wife Jean and daughter Clare sailed their yacht around the Mediterranean, often inviting friends to join them for a week or so.

On realising that his health was preventing him from competing, Don quickly volunteered to help the Club in any way possible.

Don will be very much missed by all the hill climbers who admired him so much.

Ian Harper

Sadly, we have to report that Ian Harper, Vice President and former President of the Club, died very suddenly on 19th April.

Ian's funeral will be on 30th April at St Laurence Church, Rowington, CV35 7AB, for 14.00 and back to Holywell Farm for tea for all.

A full obituary will be included in the next issue of MAC News.

Competitions Secretary’s Report

The season’s first hill climb at Shelsley is over the weekend of 2nd to 3rd May and we have accepted a full entry of over 200 cars. The Midland Hill Climb Championship is predominant at this meeting with experienced as well as novice drivers tackling the Shelsley slopes.

It will be noticed that the defensive bank between Crossing and Bottom Ess has been raised considerably, and a new barrier behind the hedge from Kennel to Crossing has been installed to protect spectators from errant cars.

Looking ahead to other events this year, we are running a Shelsley Specials class at the June meeting as an interlude from Championship hill climbing, and early indications suggest a well supported class.

At the August Championship meeting it will be the 110th year of Shelsley events. We are assembling a class of cars, some competitive and some as demonstrations, to showcase each decade of hill climbing at Shelsley. Finding cars up to the 1970s has not been too difficult, but the later years are more difficult as some cars, especially early Brabham based Pilbeams, have reverted to their earlier form. If you have a car from 1970 to 2000 that was of the leading type, please contact me if you would like to be considered to take part.

The Classic Nostalgia events in July are taking shape and will continue to grow year on year.

On the Sprint scene in partnership with the Chester Motor Club we are running two events on consecutive days using different circuits at the Ty Croes complex in Anglesey. This is a different type of Sprint event for the Club and should be a hugely enjoyable affair. We can still accept entries for these events and would be more than happy to accept entries from members.

Other sprint events this year are at MIRA and Curborough, the last event being on 11th October.

MAC TO NORTH-WEST IRELAND – 12th May to 19th May 2015 A visit to North-West Ireland, based in Westport, County Mayo. This event is now fully booked.

THE HILLS REVISITED – Wednesday 17th June 2015 This will be an afternoon mid-week event featuring the opportunity to drive sedately up many of the Hills from the MAC’s history including Sunrising, Weatheroak, Gorcutt and finally Shelsley Walsh itself. The plan is to meet for a light lunch at the café at the GWR Station at Toddington, the Flag & Whistle, complete the run and enjoy supper at Shelsley. An entry form can be found in this issue. Only a limited number of places available.

MAC TO NORTHUMBERLAND – Monday 14th to 18th September 2015 Based on the Doxford Hall Hotel, Chathill, Alnwick. Due to the great interest shown all rooms are now occupied and the list is currently full.

AUTUMN MILL RUN – Sunday 27th September 2015 In the initial planning stage but we are working on another fund raising run in coordination with the Shelsley Water Mill Society. Time to put the date in your diary now!

THE MAC CLASSIC Sunday, April 24th 2016 This will be another of our biennial fund raising events using a number of start venues around the Midlands. Open to all comers, we will be inviting other Clubs and individual classic car owners to enter, so do tell anyone you know with a qualifying car about it. As well as the Tulip note guided route to follow there will be a chance to experience the famous Hill, plus music, food and drink, Mill tours and so on.

And finally, we are very happy to announce that Colin Moore has now joined the Sports & Classics sub-committee to add yet more expertise to our dedicated team.

Work Party Day

It was a lovely sunny day when a total of twenty-three members and friends came over to Shelsley on 18th April to do some jobs before our first competition weekend.

We replaced the mesh fence in front of the Bottom S marshal post and the fencing behind the Bottom S parking area, replaced the Paddock notice board, rain-proofed (hopefully) ‘Bob’s Bar’ in the Paddock and painted various areas of the venue.

AGM Statements PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT It is good to see you all here this evening, I hope that you approve of the venue, so, do let the office know your opinion on its suitability for the AGM, and furthermore there is a possibility that the Prize Giving Lunch may be held here in November.

I would like to thank Mark Harrison for his comprehensive Treasurer’s Report and its explanation. A good deal of work goes into the preparation of the numbers, and as with many things in life the complexity of this work increases constantly. However it was good to end the year with a small surplus despite the fact that huge expenditure was caused by factors outside our control. But, here we are today just into April and we have not been troubled by the weather or any resultant expense on the hill, but, we are undertaking work at present as a result of changes which the MSA have asked us to carry out, so once again we will have spent money before any competition has started.

We therefore need full entries and good weather to hopefully boost spectator revenue and Roger will give us an update on that in a minute.

I was rather disappointed that there were no new nominations of candidates for election to the committee. The committee can have up to fifteen members and to my memory over the years it has generally had that number. But, over the last year there have been thirteen members and three of them have stood down and have not sought re-election, so, we now have only ten members.

The committee are responsible for the overall direction of this club; members of the committee are directors of the Midland Automobile Club Limited and historically together with the help of many other volunteer members they are all involved with implementing policy. Things do not happen by magic, so, a well populated committee is desirable and I hope that some of you will consider putting your name forward for election at the next AGM, or, suggesting to other members that they do so.

And, whilst talking about help for the club and the hill please do not forget the working party day on Saturday 18th April, if you are intending to come please let the office know in advance.

It can be an enjoyable day and you can help in a variety of ways, generally clearing up after winter, some light woodworking, painting of handrails and seats and probably Vox Villa. Lunch will be provided.

We are all ambassadors of this club so please do not miss an opportunity to publicise our events and get people along by whatever means. As I said last year it does not follow that people in the area know about Shelsley and yet if they visit they are often surprised and thrilled. You have been sent dates flyers and posters so do spread them about in pubs, offices, village halls or wherever. If you run out of them the office has plenty more.

So, there is a lot going on in the club at present and I will end on behalf of the whole membership by thanking the Vice Presidents, the Chairman, Committee and Secretariat who deal so well with this activity..

COMPANY SECRETARY AND COMMERCIAL MANAGER’S STATEMENT 2014 started off as a very trying year. For the second time in succession the hill started to move again just when we thought we had got away with it and to make matters worse one of the oldest trees on site decided it was time to fall. Luckily we got there in time and it was safely felled.

With the hill slipping away, it put huge pressure on the club to get it repaired so it could meet its commitments. Everyone pulled together and with three days to go before the first commitment the track was back in place.

In 2013 Shelsley Walsh became very popular with TV companies and this continued into 2014, giving us much needed publicity that was free, and what’s more we got paid for it too. Months before the hill started to slip an agreement was in place for Channel 4 to come and film for the new series of Speed with Guy Martin. This was an opportunity for us to get some significant coverage as Guy’s stock has somewhat risen from his TT days and the PR would be excellent for us. Filming got underway in March on a slightly grizzly day but it was a success and the programme was broadcast in early November and received some excellent reviews. The MAC, wherever it went, was always asked where is the car the Guy drove. The programme has already been repeated and I am sure it will be again.

The TV work kept coming with the arrival of For The Love of Cars, broadcast on Channel 4 with Philip Glenister, following the restoration, history and competition successes of the MG TC. Again this was a very popular programme and helped to keep Shelsley Walsh in front of the nation as we headed into the season.

Away from the world of TV, our PR machine continued to push out the news from Shelsley Walsh and the MAC via digital platforms including social media, continuing to raise our profile.

Throughout 2014 we were temporarily without Gill who was recovering from cancer, from which she has made a brilliant recovery and we recruited on a temporary basis Rachel Lovett to help man the fort and assist where necessary. We were very fortunate that Rachel took to the MAC like a duck to water and she is now with us on a full-time basis and has become a very valued member of the team.

After months of planning we launched a new website in November and an online membership system. Despite a few niggles, which were very quickly ironed out, it was very well received and ticks along day and night bringing in revenue. Following on from this a new online shop will be launched and an online entry system. In creating the new website we were also in a position to give the MAC a presence within the existing package, which allowed us to structure the sites to help promote all the aspects of the club and the venue’s business, with more updates to come.

There was an increase in advertising, but hospitality became a harder sell as companies scaled back their corporate packages. Membership remained in line with previous years.

For the second year we attended the Worcester Motor Festival which is becoming a major event for the city and a great place for us to showcase our sport, with race cars on display and distributing 1,500 to 2,000 flyers throughout the day.

The Breakfast Clubs continued to be a great success, helping to market and promote Shelsley, bringing in new opportunities. I would like to thank the volunteers who help with the running of this event and we would welcome anyone else who wishes to help out.

In June we scored a great coup with the testing of the McLaren F1 GTR long tail in preparation for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and welcoming indycar champion Kenny Brack. The sound of the car going up the hill was glorious. After a day’s testing, the car went to Goodwood and wowed the crowds, taking third spot in a time of 47.92 seconds. The venue continued to draw other activities with Morgans Thrill On the Hill now becoming part of the fixture list, and a visit from the 1,000 mile trial, Retro Rides bringing in a younger audience of car enthusiasts and the first ever cycling hill climb which we hope will grow and the St Richards Hospice Charity Day. The social events put on for the members and their guests continue to be varied and well supported as does the Sports and Classic Section who put in a tremendous amount of work for the benefit of the members and the club, providing some superb trips both in the UK and Europe. Both of these areas are run by volunteers who I would like to thank for their continued enthusiasm and dedication.

Going in to 2015, the year is looking very promising with plenty of variety ahead, both new and long standing, and we will continue to explore any opportunity that arises. It is 110 years of the hill climb this year and Roger will be organising some magic moments to celebrate this amazing milestone.

With that I wish you all a great year ahead and thank everyone for their continued support.

COMPETITION SECRETARY’S STATEMENT The season opening hill climb event at Shelsley took place on 3rd and 4th May after the extensive works needed to restructure the hill following the slippage caused by prolonged winter rainfall.

Drivers of quicker cars were appreciative of the improved passage through the newly surfaced Ess approach, with less bottoming of the cars.

Hill Climb entries at one and two day meetings remained strong throughout the year with solid fields of cars, with over 270 entries being accepted for the final weekend in September.

The Classic Nostalgia events were showing improved levels of entry and early signs are that further improvements can be expected this year.

Entries for showcase classes for Shelsley Specials and ERA cars during the year were slightly disappointing, but again indications for similar classes in 2015 are more encouraging.

The season was marred by two serious accidents at the June and September meetings, happily without serious injury to the drivers or spectators, although the Rescue Unit was damaged by a runaway wheel. This was an indication of how quickly the emergency crews respond to an emergency call.

The outcome of these incidents has led to a review of safety measures, and it will be noticed that the tyre wall on the left side ascending the hill has been raised along with many other improvements that might not be so obvious.

The Sprint events run by the club still suffer with low entry levels that give some concern over viability when increasing venue hire costs are considered. We ran two events at MIRA in May and August and one event using the Figure 8 course at Curborough in October.

2014 saw our third year at the enjoyable Blyton Park which regrettably is not available to us this coming year.

We are joining forces with Chester Motor Club to run a weekend of events at the Anglesey circuit instead of Blyton Park on 13th and 14th June.

2015 marks my retirement as Club Secretary and more recently Competitions Secretary, posts that I have held since 1999. As soon as my replacement has been appointed I shall hand over responsibilities during the coming season.

I have much enjoyed my time with the MAC and thank the President, Committee members, members and friends for their support and assistance that have made my time with the club such a pleasure and an honour.

A Report on “Sideways Glance at Policing”

“Yes we would trust this man ....”

We spent an enthralling couple of hours listening to Steve Foster’s informative chat, not so much a sideways glance at policing but looking in many corners and under stones. From the early 1970s – remember those days before mobile phones etc? – the police had no body armour* when dealing with riots to being diesel bombed in the race riots. We also saw the dangers and some of the aftermaths with crashed motorbikes.

Steve had been inspired by his ‘uncle’ to leave the construction industry and join the police.

Always wanting to be a biker these ambitions were more than fulfilled over Steve’s long service. The audience were entertained and enlightened as to some of the operations of the Special Forces’ undercover work, dealing with high profile kidnapping to drugs and arms crimes, and the ongoing terrorism issues. Steve’s career continues working, not only with the British agencies, but international ones as well. One clear message for us all was how the thin blue line is today and how each and every one of us needs to keep our eyes open and report anything unusual.

It was a splendid evening. I am sure we could have listened to more tales for a very long time. Many thanks to Steve for giving such an excellent, informative and thought-provoking chat. Thanks also to Trevor for the food and Pam for looking after the bar.

BREAKFAST CLUB

Increasing popularity for Shelsley Walsh Breakfast Club …

West Midland members of the Nissan 350Z UK Forum were one of the earliest groups to arrive at the monthly Breakfast Club held at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, proudly showcasing their modified cars and highly detailed aspects of their engine bays.

Regional organiser Ian Dole, (pictured right) from Kidderminster, commented, “We apologised to organisers for being a little too early but we wanted to get a good start by walking the hill, followed by a full English breakfast, in order to leave us plenty of time to look around the amazing array of cars on show.”

There was indeed a fantastic variety of vehicles on display in the Paddock, Orchard and spectator car park field, all of which were once again full by mid-morning, clearly illustrating the ever increasing popularity of this monthly event.

Ferrari fans were spoilt for choice with no fewer than fifteen examples on display, ranging from a classic 246 Dino in a striking shade of yellow, through an F430 Scuderia to the fabulous F458 Italia, in Rosso Corsa, of course!

Long standing MAC enthusiast and regular local hill climb competitor Peter Cox, of Abberley, arrived in what he calls his ‘runabout’ – which is in fact a gleaming Bentley Continental GT. Peter quipped, “I bought this car for a bargain price from a ‘posh pawn’ shop in London a few months ago and it really is just a bit of fun. I use it most days and seem to get a very warm welcome from staff at the local community waste site when I take my rubbish to the tip in it!”

Midland Automobile Club commercial manager, Mark Constanduros, added, “Yet again we are delighted to welcome so many new people to the Breakfast Club who all have a shared passion for the cars on show.

“Besides the wonderful array of supercars, we have many lovingly cherished and restored sports and saloon cars brought along by their owners, together with classic icons such as a 1966 primrose-coloured Ford Mustang, a Citroen utility van and a 1960s Mini Cooper rally car.”

PALLISER HISTORIC FF2000 Palliser were one of the first manufacturers to announce an FF2000 car. It was well made and very successful in 1975.
