This is the final MAC News before the season really gets underway. Lots of events have already happened: three Breakfast Clubs, Sporting Trial, ChronosandCars, Bala Reliability Trial. All of these have been very well attended and I hope that what we have in store for this year will also prove popular. It was wonderful to have Marino Franchitti, Richard Attwood, Nick Heidfeld, Freddie Hunt and Katie Milner with us last month, courtesy of our sponsor Omologato. There was lots of social media chatter which for us gave some good PR. Also a big thank you to Chris Drewett for doing the interviews and Rob Overy for the picture. Classic Nostalgia is changing on a weekly basis with more cars being confirmed. We have been looking at providing new attractions and can confirm that we will have vintage bumper cars for the first time, I can see this will be competitive! In this issue of the MAC News we announce the plans for British Racing Green in June. Lots of new ideas being explored and should prove quite a challenge. August will see the 70th anniversary of the British Hill Climb Championship and we have the most enormous spreadsheet of cars and drivers from the last 70 years, which we are putting together in the hope that we will have as many of them as possible with us that weekend. If you know of any past championship-winning cars and drivers, please do let us know. Have a great season and I hope you enjoy what we have coming up.

Classic Nostalgia Update Plans for this year’s Classic Nostalgia on 22nd and 23rd July are proceeding very well with over thirty rally cars now provisionally booked to celebrate Group A Rallying and the 20th anniversary of The World Rally Car. As you can imagine there will be a few Colin McRae cars including these two genuine Subarus.

We also have a number of Campbell cars confirmed as part of our Speed Records – The Campbells celebration. All the cars will parade up the hill each day. These two cars are already booked in the Donald Campbell Jaguar XK150 famous for being on the dockside in Paris as the Bluebird K7 did its promotional tour prior to the ill-fated run. We will also have this gorgeous Aston Martin Lagonda once owned by Malcolm Campbell.

There will also be a book signing session with Don and Gina at the Peter James and Stewart Miller Insurance stand with the latest David De Lara book 300+ A Speed Odyssey available. We are also producing some commemorative posters which will also be available from the MAC shop during the weekend. We will keep you updated as we go along, also keep an eye on the website where all the news will be published first and via our social media channels: Facebook.com/shelsleywalsh and twitter.com/shelsleywalsh. It is going to be a very exciting Classic Nostalgia this year! 3

British Racing Green 3rd and 4th June 2017 As you are all aware we have one visit this year from the British Hill Climb Championship in August where we will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the British Hill Climb Championship. The question is: what are we going to do in June? Well, we have rebranded the event British Racing Green and can exclusively announce the plans here first. The Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb is going back to its roots. Always an innovator, the Midland Automobile Club are inviting car manufacturers to enter British Racing Green with five new classes aimed at modern cars on 3rd and 4th June. Persuading manufacturers to get involved is not going to be an easy task but we are giving it a go!! With the advent of new technology and new forms of power, Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb has always been a place of firsts throughout its 112 years. These new classes have been created to embrace these new revolutions. Manufacturers wishing to enter the event are being invited to do timed runs or demonstration runs, giving them the opportunity to showcase their latest products. The largest class created is for electric vehicles, sub-divided into four categories: 1. Battery Electric Vehicles (Bev) 2. Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (Phev) 3. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (Hev) 4. Fuel-Cell Electric Vehicles (Fcev) There will also be a class for Autonomous vehicles and for Sports Utility Vehicles (SUV). Following on from last year when the Audi RS6 Avant set a time on the hill, there will also be a class for high-powered estate cars with manufacturers being encouraged to have a journalist in the hot seat. The final class will be for Hybrid Hypercars and Hypercars. These ultimate powerful cars with around 1,000bhp will be given the opportunity to go down in history with the very first timed runs for such a car, alternatively a demonstration run is also being offered. We will also be inviting a number of other race cars that would not be seen on the hills. With significant interest and a number of cars already committed to the event, British Racing Green is looking to create some new history. Watch this space! 5

Sporting Trial Taster Day Report By Julian Fack

BTRDA ran a highly successful Trials Taster Day at Shelsley the day before the Blankstone Trial, and with the help of the MAC’s publicity machine, managed to attract the largest number ever, seventeen participants with followers. During the week, I had some anxious phone calls with Andy Gowen about the state of the ground, due to the enormous amount of rain the previous week. We decided to run the Taster Day even if the Blankstone itself had to be cancelled, but in the event we had some delightful dry and sunny weather midweek and it all dried out nicely. Sam Sheehan, the new motorsports correspondent from Autocar magazine took part, accompanied by his photographer, so we can expect some national publicity from him, and Mike Moran, the 2015 and 2016 Britpart British Cross Country Champion also came, with a view to joining the sport. His usual mount is a 450bhp 4x4 buggy with grippy tyres so this was going to be very different! In order to cater for the numbers, we brought along eleven “instructors” with their cars, so everyone got more than their fair share of the action. Because driving a trials car is so different from anything else, we need to start from the absolute basics, so the day begins with a simple slalom on a very gentle slope. This is a straight line of poles, and the drivers have to use the fiddle brakes to weave between the poles, whilst maintaining traction. The idea is to break the nasty habit of steering with two hands, and leaving the spare hand for continuous fiddle brake action. Trials cars will neither steer nor accelerate or stop without the use of fiddle brakes, so you need to keep your hand on the brakes at all times. Because they are driving on lush grass up a slope they need to learn delicate throttle control otherwise the very poor tyres fitted to all trials cars will lose traction and they will grind to a halt. After an hour or so at the slalom, during which time I gradually tighten up the gaps to the point that the cars will simply not turn tight enough without using the brakes, we proceeded to a couple of gentle sections. I say “gentle” but to the novices these seem to be quite daunting, and the usual problems occur where they approach the slope slowly and then apply power as they hit the slope. Although this may seem natural it is completely wrong for trials where you need to gather momentum where you can, on the flatter bits, and then back off to nothing on the slope to avoid breaking traction. Because there were so many cars available, the action was more or less continuous and a break was called for lunch to allow frazzled brains to reboot, and allow time for questions. After lunch we re-set the sections to become much more like the real thing, and there was a noticeable rise in the tension as they attempted to outdo each other and stop making mistakes. One of the joys of trials is the ability to watch the progress of others at close hand and learn from their errors. At about 3.30 we called a halt so the instructors and their cars could get home in order to wash, service and refuel their mounts for the championship trial the next day. All the feedback received so far is very kind and appreciative of a great day, although a sunny day in the valley makes it easy to give enjoyment to all, especially with some interesting cars to play with. 9

Sporting Trial: A Guide to...................................... By Rachel Lovett

The MAC has organised a Sporting Trial at Shelsley Walsh for many years, but until now there has always been someone on hand who is involved in trials to organise the event. After Gill Dayson left the club at Christmas we were left with this daunting task of organising an event for which the current MAC staff had little experience. Two years ago I was a last minute passenger at the Peter Blankstone Trial so, as the most experienced trialler, naturally I was given the job of organising the event. Things I have learned about organising a trial: No one sends an entry form until 1-2 weeks before the event Apparently this is completely normal, but we are used to hill climbers who send entries up to 8 months before an event. Therefore, this meant that we were panicking for many weeks, but a fortnight before the event, the entries came flooding in. Phew! Forms are never complete There may have been one entry form with all the questions answered, but 99% of entry forms had some information missing and/or were illegible. One form literally only had a house name for the address, unless that house is Buckingham Palace, I don’t think any letters will find their way to you any time soon! THE PENCILS For the first 25 years of my life I’d never had a conversation with anyone about pencils. I have now spent at least half an hour of my life discussing what a waterproof pencil is and the merits of different types of pencil. I also mistakenly thought all the drivers and passengers needed pencils too so the MAC has enough 2B pencils to last the next 10 years. Nothing makes logical sense Duncan Stephens came to the office on the Friday before the event to help sort out the running order and what we needed to do admin wise for the trial. That day was very confusing. I still don’t know why the first car starts on the last hill... and I’m not convinced that anyone actually knows the reason why? Cars EVERYWHERE I spent most of my day at the trial trying not to get run over as there seem to be cars going in all directions all of the time. It also seems to be perfectly normal to abandon your car in random places and wander off to watch in the middle of the competition. Everybody is friendly I had a lovely time at the trial, met some wonderful people and really enjoyed my day. Everybody was very helpful in the lead up to it, offering advice and pointing us in the right direction, and we had lots of help from volunteers on the day too. We’re already looking forward to next year! 10

Peter Blankstone Sporting Trial Report By Julian Fack

We have been using Shelsley Walsh for the Peter Blankstone sporting trial for a decade now but unlike the first year had to park in the spectators car park as the monthly breakfast club had filled the hillclimb paddock. Gill Dayson has retired from the MAC office, so Robin Webb, the club’s Competition Secretary wasn’t really sure of what they were meant to do paperwork wise. After I sent him ASWMC championship information a lengthy call followed and support was offered to him and the office through the running of the trial. The Friday before saw a trip to the office to sort the paperwork, fill in all the gaps, test a proposed roller test procedure for the MSA with Andy and a quick check of the bank where the hills would be. It was surprisingly dry. The events co-ordinator Rachel Lovett will be explaining, elsewhere, more on her maiden experience of trial paperwork and dealing with us having passengered Simon Durling a few years ago. The day before saw the usual training day organised by MAC’s very own Julian Fack with a capacity quota of sixteen customers including two entrants for the trial, a journalist from Autocar and an offroad racer. No doubt Julian will explain more on the training day and potential new competitors to the sport. The forecasters seemed to be scratching their heads for the Sunday. Gloucester had heavy rain overnight, as did Solihull, but it appeared Shelsley stayed dry but rain was forecast at some point, however we ended up with bright sunshine and short sleeves. The computers were wrong! Some competitors enjoyed wandering round the paddock exploring the 11

breakfast club’s offerings of cars ranging from a week-old 350bhp Discovery to vintage cars. Thirty-two crews were briefed with Neil Martin (Stuart Perren Facksimile), Bill Bourne (Alastair’s Facksimile), Mike Harris (whose done a few HSTA trials) welcomed at their first event, and Kiel Wright (not allowed Ian’s Indy but an old live axle Sherpa) let loose on his own as Ian was suffering a bad shoulder. Dave Rance was debuting his ex-Jon Moores MSR, making it five MSR on the entry list and him the first none South West owner of one. Mike Harris’ car is linked to MAC and Shelsley hence his keenness to enter. The clubs late archivist Mark Joseland used to own the car prior to him selling it to Robin Parker of Chester Motor Club, from whom Mike purchased it as a “project”. Fundamentally despite 2psi the hills didn’t encroach much into the bracken. Andy Wilks immediately took the initiative with some fabulous trickling on the super long straight and wide start of hill 6 to get over the brow at the five which no one else managed and then consolidated this further two hills later, but this time matched by Duncan Stephens both gaining four marks. Such so Andy led by three having selected the wrong gear on hill one in only his third event in the Crossle 9 v13. Behind it was very close with John Fack on 14, Peter McKinney 15 leading the blue’s, Ian Veale 16, Simon 17 helped by the only clean on hill 1 after a bit of advice from fellow northerner Boyd. Steve was keeping Josh honest as best live axle a point behind, while the green leaders of Alan Baker and Pat Henson were just a couple of points behind them. Kiel had to take two twelve’s running late after the car cut out on the first startline eventually traced to the passenger footwell breaking the circuit and was flying after the front brakes were found to be binding. These costing any chance to challenge for the green class win. The second round saw Julian wake up matching Duncan’s round of nine as did Josh, this round Duncan being the only one over the brow of hill 6. Andy slipped up again on hill 1 with a three to hand the lunchtime lead to Duncan by three. Peter McKinney should have matched the best round but stopped on the ant hills on hill 8 dropping him to fourth at lunch. John Fack retired at the start of the round with a broken CV joint frustratingly having been fitting them till midnight with Jerome freshly back from a ski trip meeting Jess out there. Josh with his great round stepped ahead of Steve as best live axle while Ian Fullwood didn’t have the best of rounds to drop back too. Steve was holding his own with second in the blue class with Paul Price and Stuart Beare a point behind. Pat Henson took the lead in the green class by a couple of points after getting over a brow of hill 4 which only five others did. Back to the hills after lunch whereby we all put layers back on, the hills tweaked by rent a clerk Roger Anderson and Bill Cole. Duncan immediately slipped into the wet bracken on hill 7 and stopped for a three after Ian sailed through infront. Simon Kingsley must have had some strong coffee at lunch as he had the best round dropping just four points to climb to fourth overall losing to Ian on a tiebreak. Stuart Beare gave up trying to trickle hill 6 after two nine’s and lit the Sherpa Indy up in a big gear to drop his only points of the round with a five promoting him three places in the blue class to runner up and eighth place overall. Peter ‘English’ McKinney who won the class in fifth who must have been left thinking “if only” for that five on round two. Ian Fullwood had a better final round managing to split the trio of MSR’s in the midfield and third live axle behind Steve who slipped up on hill 6. Alan Baker and birthday girl Hilary won the class on their last hill from Pat. Kiel could have been with them with a bit more car preparation by his delivery driver and dad Ian!! Alan Ede was seen debuting his No1 MSR having used it at two club events in Cornwall and finished third in class. So what of the battle for the win. Duncan managed a superb first gear trickle on hill 5 laid out by the lady passengers the day before to be only the second competitor in the last twenty to climb out the top. Andy failed to climb his wife Judith’s hill for the third time taking another 12

one on hill 7. It came down to each others last hills, independently. Andy finished on hill 1 and dropped a one on a hill that a third of the entry climbed. Meanwhile Duncan finished on hill six which Ian had blasted up from about the nine to get a three. Duncan tried a fast trickle which had worked so well in the morning but couldn’t find any grip after the steep bit which suddenly came an outright gear grabbing blast and after a lot of bouncing from Tristan, who had eventually recovered from the England-Scotland rugby yesterday, eventually managed his worst score of the trial on the hill with a five. They had tied, with Duncan and Tristan retaining the Peter Blankstone trophy with one more zero, thirteen in total. Andy probably deserved to win, but will surely do so very soon and become a regular force at the top I’m sure. So ended another delightful day at Shelsley Walsh, where only Simon, Boyd and Richard from the north were seen, compared to a big influx (six more) last year perhaps saving cars for next weekend’s Yorkshire double header. What happened of the newcomers, Bill Bourne, believed to be an ex-motorbike trialler, showed great skill to beat a regular competitor in his live axle Facksimile. Neil Martin had learnt a lot the day before and was regularly asking for advice, but Stuart has a warranty claim as the big ends were knocking come the end. Mike Harris enjoyed his day but had to be rescued by Bill getting out of the paddock after getting stuck in his van. With Richard Sharp coming from the same background as Bill we have high expectations! Perhaps this is the recruitment avenue we should target. Welcome to the sport to you. Thank you to all those involved in running a FABULOUS trial that tested everything of the crews and cars, all gears and driving skills at the right moment. Here’s to the next decade of Shelsley Walsh trials.

Competition Secretary’s Report By Robin Webb

We have just passed the closing date for our first competitive hill climb in May and we have taken 78 more entries than we did in 2016. This is mainly due to the popularity of the one day option with the invited clubs. Taking advantage of competing on Saturday only are the championships from Paul Matty, Jaguar Drivers Club, BARC SBD Speed, MG Luffield and WSCC Westfields. In my mind, one day meetings are, by far, more popular with the club championships. Logistically the organising of two one-day events within a two-day event has been interesting and with a great deal of help from Rachel and various spreadsheets, we have now come up with a running order that should work well. Paddock marshals and Course control should also benefit from the new system and, if it works well, we will do the same at our June meeting. The two-day event is dominated by the Midland Hill Climb Championship with over 90 entries and they now benefit from a 3rd practice run on Sunday morning. On the hill there has been considerable activity during the last four weeks. Dead and dangerous trees (eight of them) have been felled in the public viewing area and a further 30 have been dead wooded to remove rotten branches. All the bench seats have been checked and renewed where necessary and the commentators’ boxes have received a thorough spring clean with new glass and other repairs including new steps at the Crossing box. All thanks to the Dibnahs during the winter period. The Sunrise Sprint championship now has double the number of registrations compared to last year and kicks off on Saturday 6th May at our first Shelsley meeting. We have changed some of the points scoring system which should give all competitors an equal chance regardless of their car’s Class although I am sure this won’t stop Richard Hollingworth trying to win it for a second time. Finally, we have initiated the start of our new Marshal’s Club to which every volunteer marshal will automatically be enrolled. We have Marshals Record books that will be issued at the first meeting and signed at every meeting and it is intended that there will be some sort of reward to marshals who reach certain levels of attendance. Fingers crossed for good weather and looking forward to seeing everybody at Speed into Spring. 15

Work Party Report By Simon Fidoe

With a list of jobs almost as long as the new barriers on the finish straight (that needed to be creosoted), a fantastic effort was made by all who attended the work party on 8th April to make a significant dent in the job list and help bring the hill out of its winter slumber. A huge thank you to all who gave up their valuable time and expended great effort on what turned out to be a scorching spring Saturday. There was plenty of banter, lots of enthusiasm, helpful doses of food and refreshment and hopefully a great deal of satisfaction at jobs completed. If you feel left out because you weren’t there, please make sure you join us at the same time next year as we all know the hill never rests!

Karting Report By Peter Mason

We were blessed with one of the nicest days of the year on April 6th – when conditions were perfect for racing and the circuit record had just been broken – as the group of seventeen MAC members began to arrive. Once again a good mix of younger and older members completed the line-up. Brothers Mark and Peter Mason and father and son Simon and Hayden Gwilliam returned again, along with Daniel Morris and Jonathan Clark who competed in 2016. All drivers would compete on track at the same time using Daytona’s Sodi RT8 390cc karts, starting with a 10-minute qualifying battle to determine the order for a 30-minute race. Qualifying saw Mark Mason take pole position, with Dominic Hayes and Peter Mason in second and third place. Simon Gwilliam and Daniel Morris rounded off the top five. As the lights went green Mark Mason and Dominic Hayes held position, with Peter Mason losing position to Daniel Morris for almost a lap until Daniel unfortunately span out on Tamworth’s tricky final hairpin. The first 10 laps saw the top four hold position with Dominic pushing Mark hard for first place and Peter and Simon just holding on. Around lap 10 Dominic took excellent advantage of backmarkers, boxing Mark in to take first position. 18

As the sun went down, Dominic took fastest lap and continued to push Mark for the remainder of the race with the two drivers only being separated by 2.870 seconds after 28 laps. Simon Gwilliam was awarded third place but, unfortunately, after the podium presentation a timing error on lap 16 was discovered where a lap had not registered for Peter Mason and the corrected results would promote him from 7th to 3rd place. Everybody had a great evening and thanked the MAC for organising the event. Fastest Lap: 1:00.685 Dominic Hayes

Bala Reliability Trial Re-Run Report A fascinating and enjoyable weekend awaited all 34 entrants for this great event, starting with receiving the instructions at the Gorwelion Centre in Bala and returning back there for tea after everyone had experienced the rigorous trial of navigating over 100 miles of Snowdonia roads using maps and attempting to read signposts written in Welsh. This recreation caused everyone to think what a challenge this must have been to all the original entrants in 1907. The weekend proved to be an excellent social gathering as well as a marvellous tour of all those superbly located towns and villages. Despite some heavy rain overnight and early on the day itself, the weather proved quite fine during the run which helped everyone appreciate the stunning scenery of mountains, lakes and rolling hills. A number of tasks were required to complete the run and receive the commemorative mugs and certificate. These were designed to show that passage to all the nominated places had been achieved together with records of mileage covered and fuel used. Jerry and Miriam Targett took pride of place with their 1929 MG 18/80 as the oldest car entered, adding to the variety of other entrants in their MGs, Morgans, Porsches, Jaguars, Triumphs, Mazdas, Lotuses and so on. Some really superb machinery as can be seen from the photo taken outside the Gorwelion Centre.

Breakfast Club Report HOTTEST DAY OF THE YEAR WELCOMES BREAKFAST CLUBBERS Sunday saw a huge turn out for Breakfast Club which was helped by the day being the hottest of the year so far. As ever a wide variety of cars arrived at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb for the monthly Breakfast Club, a social gathering of like minded enthusiasts and these include the Ford Focus RS Owners Club who met up en masse in a variety of interesting colours. The most unusual sight was a Green Goddess as they are more commonly known. A Bedford RLHZ self propelled pump fire engine originally used by the Auxiliary Fire Service. The owner saying as he leant out the window: “thought I would come in something a bit more unusual”. Who knows what he will bring next month! There wasn’t as many classics, but there was this immaculate Porsche 356 with air suspension to alter its ride height. A lovely little Triumph TR2, a Corvette Stingray and a beautiful Sunbeam amongst others. One very rare car was the Subaru RB5 WR Sport PPP, one of only about 70 remaining. This was accompanied by a Tommi Makinen Edition Mitsubishi EVO VI. Rather appropriate as the MAC are celebrating the Group A rally car and The World Rally Car at Classic Nostalgia on 22nd and 23rd July. There was even a good spread of Lotuses (Loti??) including a near mirror image of an Exige and an Elise. Next Breakfast Club is on 14th May, anyone wishing to come is reminded to purchase or register in advance as this event is by Advanced Ticket only.

Chronos & Cars Report Photos. Rob Overy, Mark Constanduros, G Frank Photos

At the end of March we hosted a Breakfast Club style event for one of our sponsors, Omologato, who brought along a few of his clients and guests. The event was a ticket only for a limited number of people who were treated to an interview session by Chris Drewett with Freddie Hunt, Marino Franchitti, Richard Attwood, Nick Heidfeld and Katie Milner. All of them also got the chance to drive the hill a couple of times, with “Quick Nick” Heidfeld in the new Arrinera GT race car, who holds the hill record at Goodwood. He was very impressed with the venue and keen to bring his family back. Nick was there with his Formula E team boss Dilbagh Gill who had both flown in for this event. Freddie Hunt, son of James Hunt, announced his racing plans that morning, as he confirmed his drive in the Porsche GT3 with Brookspeed, a very well respevted GT race team. Katie Milner, daughter of British rally champion, Jonny Milner, talked about her rise through the categories as one of the most successful and up and coming female race drivers. Richard Attwood, historic racer and famed for his driving of the Porsche 917 at Le Mans talked about his career. Marino Franchitti, who arrived in Nick Mason’s LaFerrari, chatted about his racing exploits as this year he tackles the 12 Hour Of Sebring with the Mazda Prototype team. Hope to see some of these guys and girls back at Shelsley soon.
