OFFICIALS 2017 President: J. W. Moody

Last month we attended Race Retro at Stoneleigh Park, probably the closest motorsport show to us and as ever a great success. A big thank you to Global Displays and Richard Cook for our stand, always doing us proud providing us with a great stage on which to sell the MAC and Shelsley Walsh. It was here that we announced the themes for Classic Nostalgia, you can read all about it further on in this issue. Once the announcement was made, there was a lot of buzz about the themes which appear to have been very well received. Last year was always going to be a tough one to beat, but this year we are really pleased to welcome back rallying with Group A and The World Rally Car, but to also celebrate a legendary family, The Campbells, as we pay tribute to them with Speed Records.

Vice Presidents: A.B. Griffiths, A.E. Gabriel, N.H. Harrison, M.D. Griffiths, F. Drasar, D.M. Nursey, J.J. Toulmin, D.S.Whitefoot

There are some ambitious plans for British Racing Green as well, which is now gathering some pace. Fingers crossed we will be able to announce something shortly.

Committee: I. Antony Harper (Chairman), M. Harrison (Vice Chairman), J.R. Wood, T.W.J. Moody, D.L. Ball, A.K. Harrison, Mrs M. Nightingale, S.D. Fidoe, P.G. Nuthall, C. Deas

Championship Challenge in August will be celebrating 70 years of the British Hill Climb Championship and we are busy sourcing cars and British Champions. If you know the whereabouts of any cars and even Champions, please let us know so we can invite them.

Treasurer: M Harrison Commercial Manager: Mark Constanduros Competitions Secretary: Robin Webb

We have a new column from The Dibnahs, who want to show that they do more than drink tea and eat biscuits on Tuesday! In fact they are a great bunch who really muck in when help is needed.

Event Coordinator: Anouzka Lowrie-Herz Competition Assistant: Rachel Lovett Finance & Membership: Sarah Browne Archivist: David Moore Auditors: Bloomer Heaven and Co The views and statements expressed are not necessarily those of the MAC. Correspondence also is the opinion of the writer only. The Midland Automobile Club accepts no responsibility nor endorses the products or services offered by the advertisers.

AGM and Accounts Included with this issue is a copy of the Accounts for year ending 2016. The Annual General Meeting of The Midland Automobile Club (Est 1901) will be held at the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, Worcester on the 7th April 2016 at 7.30pm.

First Era Trophy Returns to Shelsley Walsh By David Moore

Thanks to member Max Hunt alerting the Club to its availability, we have just managed to buy the first Shelsley trophy presented to Raymond Mays in 1934 for Best Time of Day in an ERA. Mays first entered an ERA at Shelsley in June 1934, but the new car was not ready in time so he competed in The White Riley instead which was effectively the prototype for the ERA. This car possessed the supercharged Riley 6-cylinder engine which, in modified form, featured in all pre-war ERAs. September’s Shelsley the same year was to be more successful, Mays arriving both with ERA R1A in 1500 cc form and R3A with the new 2 litre engine. The weather on 29th September was absolutely appalling so no records were going to be broken but history was made. R1A had the privilege of being the first-ever ERA to climb Shelsley, with a best time of 46.0 secs but, set with a target of 44.2 secs by Whitney Straight’s 3 Litre GP Maserati, R3A delivered on Mays’ second run to take the day with 44 secs dead. Mays thus took BTD ahead of Straight and was presented with the Trophy we have now acquired. We hope to display this in the Trophy Case from time to time but it would be even better to accompany it with a photograph of it being presented on that day 82 years ago. Sadly, we do not have such a photograph in the Archive but would be delighted to hear from anyone who has seen a record of the presentation, perhaps in a magazine or a private photograph. 3

Classic Nostalgia Themes Announced The themes for this year’s Classic Nostalgia on 22nd and 23rd July were announced at Race Retro last month to great excitement. After the huge success of last year with Group B, we are looking forward to welcoming Group A rally cars which took over from 1987 and then the World Rally Car from 1997. This was the era of the Ford Sierra Cosworth, Lancia Delta Integrale before the rise of the iconic Ford Escort Cosworth, Ford Focus, the 555 Subaru Impreza, the everfaster editions of the Mitsubishi Evolutions, the Toyota Celica GT-Four and then Corolla WRC. It was also the era of Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes, Mark Lovell, Malcolm Wilson and David Llewellin and gave rise to Tommi Makinen in the Mitsubishi Evolution who won the World Rally Championship four times on the bounce from 1996 to 1999. It was also the era of the Brits as Colin McRae who had become world champion in 1995 and Richard Burns battled for titles with ‘Burnsie’ emotionally winning on the RAC Rally in 2001. We will also be paying tribute to The Campbells. Shelsley Walsh has always had a connection with speed records. On the 50th anniversary of his death, Donald Campbell’s daughter Gina and his nephew Don Wales will be joining us to mark the occasion with a very special unveiling of a car dedicated to Bluebird. An amazing sight and sound will be the Napier Bluebird replica with the W12 aero engine which will do demonstration runs on the hill, it will be an amazing sight. Don and Gina will be interviewed by David Tremayne, an authority on speed records, on the main stage in The Courtyard as well as book signings on the Peter James & Stewart Miller Insurance stand during the weekend. There will also be a selection of Campbell memorabilia and cars on display. 4

Both Malcolm and Donald were involved with the MAC and Shelsley Walsh, Malcolm actually competed on the hill in 1935 and Donald gave a talk to the club in 1950 about his father’s land and water speed record achievements. On the Sunday there will be a street Concours sponsored by Classic and Sports Car Magazine for the first 100 cars to arrive. The top 15 will then have a parade run up the hill during the lunch break. Judging will be carried out by motorsport commentator Simon Taylor. For this year you can purchase an all inclusive VIP Hospitalty package with viewing from the prime location of Bottom Ess where you can watch trackside as the cars approach at speed and brake into the 90 degree left hander. Great spot to watch the rally cars in action! Off track, The Courtyard is where you will find the main stage hosting music and dancing for those who wish to relax and soak up the atmosphere. Confirmed acts include the Ding Dong Daddios, Jon Clare and The Fabulous Doughboys, My Favourite Things, and Sam and The Sax. The main stage will also be the place to be to hear from our guests chat about their time in motorsport. One lucky person who represents the Spirit of Shelsey Walsh will also be presented with a special Omologato timepiece on the Sunday Afternoon. Shami Kalra commented “I am really looking forward to this year’s event, great to work with such an iconic venue”. There will also be tradestands leading you up the track to the spectator areas which can be visited via the food court which will overlook the classic car and car club area. Car clubs will be made very welcome with discounts available for clubs who bring more than 25 cars. We already have a number of clubs booked in. This year’s event is supported by the RAC, Omologato, Brightwells, Classic and Sports Car Magazine and Peter James & Stewart Miller Insurance. 5

Metal Detectors at Shelsley Walsh On Sunday 19th February, Shelsley Walsh opened its doors to the Bromsgrove-based Clodhoppers Metal Detecting Club. Approximately 65 people turned up, having had permission to detect in the farmer’s field, around the church, the Shelsley Car Park and the Orchard. Most headed off to the Church field in hope of something historic and a few hardy souls decided on the Car Park which eventually defeated them after picking up hundreds of ring pulls from cans which they kindly collected and removed. Example of an English ‘Tealby’ coin from 1154

However, one young detector had fine tuned his hearing and could distinguish between a ring pull and something else. His reward was a £178.25 in loose coins which he is putting towards a holiday for his autistic brother. By the end of the day, nearly 100 silver coins were retrieved plus three modern silver rings, a toy car, various lapel badges and some unusual brooches. Surprisingly there was very little of Victorian origin but there were George V sixpences, shillings and florins. Finally, the Church field yielded twelve English silver hammered coins from the reign of Edward 1st (1272-1307), Elizebeth 1st (1558-1603) and the best coin was from the period of Henry 2nd (1154-1189) in remarkable condition and known as ‘Tealby’ coinage. However, there was one more surprise. One person plugged away at the rough bank in the Shelsley orchard and found a Roman silver denarius in excellent condition being roughly 1500/2000 years old. Who would have thought that we were surrounded by all these goodies! The Cloddhoppers made a contribution of £200 to the MAC as thanks for a great day out. Hugh Tranter, www.clodhoppersmdc.co.uk

Work Party 8th April The MAC's annual Work Party Day is a chance for the club members to come along and help prepare Shelsley Walsh for the start of the new season. If you can spare a few hours to come along it would be very much appreciated and a great chance to meet up with fellow members. Assemble in the paddock on Saturday 8th April at 9.00am for 9.30am start and finish around 4pm with lunch provided. If you are available and can come along to help please let Anouzka know so she can add you to the list: anouzka@mac1901.co.uk, 01886 812211, ext4. 7

Clee Hills Trial Report By Jonathan Toulmin. Photos Calvin Talbot

January 22nd saw the start of MAC’s competition calendar. “The Clee” was first run in early February 1947, in a lot of snow. Hagley & District LCC ran the event in those days, and for a decade or so, but it evolved into a sporting trial event and changed its name. Two decades later, the trial was resurrected in its original form, by the VW Owners Club, with Simon at the helm. He ran it until 1992, when MAC took over, first running it in September 1994, but reverting to its traditional late January slot for the 1996. This Overall winner Adrian Marfell with 70th anniversary event had snow too, Graham Price on "Flounders Folley" but not much. Simon Woodall, who has been Clerk-of-Course for more Clee Hills Trials than anyone can remember was once again in charge. The innovation for 2017 was the inclusion of classes for motorcycles (and ‘outfits’) for the first time. This boosted entries to 75, almost back to where they had been in the 1990s, with 18 on two wheels, 1 on three, and 56 on four! There was just a single entry, a Ford Ka in the front wheel drive class. The pre-war class of 8 boasted some delectable machinery – Model A Ford, Austin 7, Riley 9, Singer and Lea Francis. The rear-engined classes had 5 Beetles and a Skoda battling it out. The “Sports Car” class contained eleven entries, mostly Suzuki X-90s (not a ‘sports car’ maybe, but they do have only two seats!) but also a couple of MG Midgets and David Golightly’s amazing Morton & Brett ‘Model T’ Ford (with ‘Model A’ engine & ‘box, but still lacking front wheel brakes! The ‘kit-car’ class boasted eleven entries also, with a pair of Dutton Melos, four Liege, three Marlin, and MG J2 (highly modified) and a VW Baja. There were 13 assorted cars in the ‘top’ class, for ‘the full-monty’ trials machinery, and a further seven – very assorted – cars in class 0, which do a rather easier trial. Simon was again using the figure-of-eight route which reduces waiting time at sections so very effectively. He was also using every trick in the book to handicap the higher classes, so that every class has a real chance of outright victory. The event used most of the favourite sections used in previous years, but with the addition of a couple of new ones in the woods of Priors Holt just a few miles north of Craven Arms. A little snow made for testing conditions and lovely scenery, but the low mist prevented the usual spectacular views from MAC’s privileged route along the very top of the Long Mynd. The competitors loved it especially the ‘bikers, who are already wanting to come back for more. The handicapping system worked well, with a large-engined beetle VW Beetle, a smallengined version and Mike Chatwin’s ‘DP Wasp’ all finishing on 5 penalties, with the verdict, based on test times, going to the large-engined Beetle of Adrian Marfell. Sam Holmes’ small engined Beetle was 2nd overall. Tim Barrington (Dellow) won class 0. The ‘Best Motorcycle’ was the Ariel HT5 of Roger Ashby with just 9 penalties. 9

Competition Secretary’s Report By Robin Webb

So here we are at the end of February and it is, once again, full on for another season. Entries have started to pile in and Rachel Lovett (on an external contract based in Doncaster) has taken over the Competitions Assistant role that Gill Dayson had so ably previously managed. We have introduced more computerised record keeping which, in theory, should speed up the entry process and allow us more flexibility with regard to late changes and numbering. The new ‘Open Practice’ day has received over 20 applications so far and we already have over 100 entries for our season ender the Autumn Speed Finale. So once again, I fear that we will have to disappoint several entrants on that weekend. Classic Nostalgia is also heavily booked up and we have our fingers crossed for good weather once more. During the last few days, we were battered by storm Doris and on inspection the day after, we were amazed to see that the bottom four garages had lifted, in their entirety, and deposited next door in the grounds of John Stinton’s cottage resting on its roof with the legs poking up above the half destroyed fence. Quite a surprise as this has some serious weight to it. Remedial work has started and hopefully will be fully repaired and operational within a few days. The photograph shows the staff standing where the shelters once stood and if you look carefully you will see the upturned legs in the garden next door. Another photo shows the work in progress. Finally, we managed to have all the necessary approvals to remove and dead-wood some of the trees in the spectator area. After an arborist was contracted to inspect, eight trees were condemned as dangerous and another 34 as having dangerous branches. A tree surgeon has been contracted to carry out the work which will take at least two weeks and should be finished by the end of March. 11

The Shelsley Water Mill Society – Dibnah News By Tim King

The Society aka the ‘Dibnahs’ meet every Tuesday, originally with the aim of restoring the Mill, but with the major works completed some time ago, weekly maintenance and various other jobs are undertaken. For instance, extensive refurbishment was carried out on the top flooring of the Mill over the winter to make it safe. Window frames were restored and re-puttied to improve their appearance and weather protection. One of the major tasks occupying our thoughts is planning for the future. What if, for example, the main wooden spur gear breaks, through ageing timbers or by accident? Obviously a replacement cannot be bought off the shelf so the mill could be out of action for months which would be a huge disappointment to many. And, by the way, the cost of replacement will be not insignificant.

Dibnahs at work – Commentator David Lowe, David Haggerty and Max Hunt upgrading the ‘comms box’ at Top Ess February 2017.

So drawings have been made and suitable cuts of wood are currently being sourced and priced up so that a complete wheel can be made in sections that can be bolted together in good time as and when finances allow.

Apart from Mill maintenance, Dibnahs have also been busy helping the MAC during the winter by replacing fencing up the hill around the members’ enclosure. The drivers’ signing-on hut has been upgraded and currently the commentators’ boxes at Crossing and Top Ess are being fitted with new windows and interiors. These works were funded by MAC. Chief Miller Richard Galle whom most of you will have seen grinding Shelsley flour wearing a bowler hat and apron is currently training two ‘apprentice’ millers namely Headley Fletcher and Max Hunt. David Haggerty and Stuart Scott-Dixon were two very welcome additions to the ‘Dibnah’ community during 2016. Special mention must be made of the horticultural section who not only maintain the gardens around the Mill, but are responsible for the orchard having introduced a significant number of old Worcestershire apple varieties. Finally, the Society’s latest fund raising venture will be the sale of greetings cards, featuring on the cover, Jonathan Clark’s splendid painting of the Mill. The inside of the cards will be blank so you can use them all year round for any occasion, so please buy as many as you can. Cards will be available at the Mill, the MAC members’ hut by Kennel and the paddock shop at hill climb events, or by contacting our website: www.shelsleywatermill.com. 15
