June has been a very busy month this year, with two hill climbs, a Breakfast Club, Driving School and a Black Plate Wednesday. We were also involved with two private shakedowns for Goodwood Festival of Speed with Jaguar and Prodrive. These were quickly followed by the new VSCC weekend meeting. As I finalise this issue we are heading towards the biggest event of the year, Classic Nostalgia. Again there will be something for everyone. We have twenty Group A and five WRC rally cars plus ten Campbell cars. Gina Campbell and Don Wales will be with us as well as 2004 works Mitsubishi driver Kristian Sohlberg being reunited with his car almost thirteen years to the day. With the revamped British Racing Green being a huge success and some very positive feedback from the car manufacturers, we hope that next year there will be even more involved. The highlight was the amazing Aston Martin Vulcan with Nurburgring lap record holder Peter Dumbreck at the wheel. On Saturday evening I was invited by the owner for a passenger run the following day. There are no words that can describe the experience. It was all very calm inside despite what you saw outside, but my word does the Vulcan fly, the acceleration and braking was quite phenomenal. The Open Test day that followed a week or so later has received some very positive responses and I am sure we will be looking at that weekend and decide what we will do for 2018.

Jaguar Project 8 at Shelsley Walsh

Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) has revealed the most powerful, agile and extreme performance Jaguar road car ever - the 200mph, 600PS XE SV Project 8. Project 8 is a hand-built four-door sedan with supercar performance - designed to thrill driving enthusiasts, with an extraordinary combination of explosive power, dynamic agility and all-wheel-drive traction. To ensure exclusivity, no more than 300 examples will be created, each assembled at SVO’s Technical Centre in Coventry. Project 8 exclusively features the most highly tuned version of Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain. The 600PS power unit, which has a Titanium Variable Active Exhaust, is complemented by Jaguar’s All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system and motorsport-derived aerodynamics to deliver a 200mph top speed and 0-60mph in 3.3sec*, making Project 8 the fastest accelerating Jaguar yet. The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 will make its world debut at Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex, UK, which runs from 29 June - 2 July. Project 8 will make its dynamic world debut on the famous Goodwood Hill on Friday 30 June. Project 8 had its final shakedown test at Shelsley Walsh following in the tyre tracks of Project 7 in 2013, prior to its appearance at Goodwood. The car was also photographed and filmed which can be seen via the news story on our website and follow the link 3

Prodrive Subaru Impreza STI at Shelsley Walsh

Two weeks after our Jaguar Project 8 test and shakedown for Goodwood we were asked for an exclusive private test from Prodrive. Prodrive have been involved in many different types of motorsport projects but their latest involved the Subaru Impreza WRX STI tuned to take on the Isle of Man TT course with Mark Higgins driving. Three-time British Rally champion Mark Higgins blew his own Manx TT course lap record out of the water in 2016 with an average speed of 128.730mph setting a four wheeled time of 17:35.139. In 2016 the Subaru WRX STI went to Goodwood but not for timed runs. This year there is unfinished business and to address this and take on Olly Clark who took BTD in Gobstopper, Prodrive are going for it. Prodrive therefore needed somewhere to fine tune the Subaru and Shelsley Walsh was best placed for this test. The team spent most of the day looking at computers but this we were assured was to find the right parameters for the launch control. Once found the Subaru left the Spin Line like a scalded cat, the radio transmissions couldn't keep up and before long Mark was back at the bottom of the hill. At Goodwood Mark Higgins came third in the Shoot Out with a 48.25, Jeremy Smith second in the Penske Chevrolet (46.22) and Justin Law in the Jaguar XJR12 (46.13). Anthony Reid came 4th in the Arrinera another car that has been up Shelsley Walsh. I wonder what time the Subaru can do up the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb? 5

Competition Secretary Report By Robin Webb

Since writing my last article for the June MAC News, we have now completed a further three hill climb weekends. The newly branded “British Racing Green” in June followed a similar format to the May meeting with the main event being the Midland Hill Climb Championship ably supported by several one-day club championships. Once again we followed programme order in practice and, once again, it was favourably received by over 95% of the competitors. The next weekend was a new addition sandwiched between the traditional BRG and VSCC meetings. We moved The Reg Phillips meeting from its normal position in July and preceded it with an open practice day on the Saturday. An experiment that worked incredibly well and was judged as being very relaxing “just like it used to be at Shelsley!” No requirement for car parking or gate staff and it will be something that we will surely repeat next year. The VSCC weekend stayed in its normal slot (first weekend of July) but expanded to two days so as not to disappoint entrants. Perhaps this wasn’t the success that we had hoped in terms of additional entrants but they certainly enjoyed themselves with four practice runs on Saturday and three timed competitive runs on Sunday. It’s a real feast for the eyes and was extremely enjoyable from an organisational point of view. Right now, Rachel and I are flat out with Classic Nostalgia. Its popularity is still increasing and even though we restricted the entries we have still been oversubscribed resulting in some disappointed competitors. Having said that, we have managed to give everybody at least one day competing on the hill. I very much enjoy the build up which will start on Monday and all of us in the office joining into the general spirit with our period clothing. The girls have even bought different outfits for each day! 7

VSCC Report By James Taylor

Alta takes top honours at Vintage Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb. It was another triumphant occasion as two of the most celebrated names in Pre-war motorsport joined forces for the Vintage Sports-Car Club’s ‘Vintage and Post-Vintage Thoroughbred Meeting’, hosted by the Midland Automobile Club at the historic Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb last weekend. New for this year, the ever-popular event at the world’s oldest motorsport venue spanned a full weekend of Vintage motoring, forming the sixth round of the 2017 VSCC Speed Championship. Another fantastic turnout of enthusiasts descended on the historic Worcestershire site, which was bathed in glorious Summer sunshine throughout, to enjoy another thrilling Hill Climb competition set against the familiar relaxed and nostalgic atmosphere of the Paddock, with a wonderful array of the Club’s Pre-war Racing and Sports-Cars on display, alongside a small selection of invited Post-war machinery, which added welcome variety. With a host of the perennial challengers in attendance it proved a colossal battle for top honours as Ian Baxter got the better of Nick Topliss in the highly fancied ex-Raymond Mays ERA R4D and others to claim a stunning overall victory in his Alta 61 I.S. Single Seater. Built in 1937 for Philip Jucker, the monoposto was raced by him in the Campbell Trophy Grand Prix at Brooklands on 1st May in that year before a fatal accident a month later during practice for the RAC Light Car Race on the Isle of Man. The car was then re-built by Alta for George Abecassis, who successfully campaigned it in more than forty races Pre-war, continuing to take part in Race and Hill Climb events until 1947. 8

Leading the way after Saturday’s Practice day, Baxter went on to dominate proceedings during the main competition, setting the only sub-34 seconds times with a best of 33.43 seconds to top the standings, 0.8 seconds ahead of the ex-Basil Davenport GN Spider II of Martin Spencer, who was a further tenth ahead of Topliss’s ERA. Tom Walker claimed yet another ‘Top Vintage’ accolade in the Hispano-powered Amilcar, claiming Class honours by just 0.3 seconds ahead of rival Julian Grimwade’s Frazer Nash Norris Special in the process, whilst Mark Brett’s Ballamy-Ford V8 led the Sports-Car ranks with the sole sub-40 second run by a road-going machine. A half dozen entrants contested the ‘Under 30’ stakes including a quartet of the Club’s leading young lady drivers, with Stephanie Wilton setting the pace in her Cooper Bristol, ahead of Hannah Enticknap in the ex-Freddie Giles GN Salome, Stephanie’s sister Francesca in the family’s Kay Petre Replica Austin 7 and Rebecca Smith, showcasing her talent once more with a runner-up finish in the Edwardian Class in Alisdaire Lockhart’s Vauxhall A/D Type. Also enjoying Class success were the Frazer Nash of Club President Geoff Smith, John Gillett’s ex-Prince Bira MG K3 and David Pryke, piloting his trusted Morgan/Riley 4/4 Special following mechanical issues for his newly restored Frazer Nash Shelsley Single Seater, whilst Mark Purnell’s Riley and the Vintage GN Spider of David Leigh were also winners amongst the Racing cars and Hugh Mackintosh heading the Edwardian line-up in his 1917 Hudson Super Six. The Club would like to thank our friends at the MAC for again hosting the Club’s Vintage Hill Climb and all those Officials, Marshals and volunteers who helped across the weekend to ensure another safe and enjoyable event.

British Racing Green Event Report By Tony Adams. Photos: Geoff Robinson, John Hallett, Tony Adams

Changeable weather conditions failed to drain the colour from the Midland Automobile Club’s British Racing Green event held at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb over the weekend. Undisputed star of the show was the futuristic-looking Aston Martin Vulcan, a £2.5million hypercar, which left the longest strips of rubber away from the start line that I have ever seen and combined with an awesome sound and blistering performance, certainly won the approval of most people present. Another aspect to the weekend celebrating the ‘Best of British’ was an invitation class for car manufacturers to showcase electric and SUV vehicles which allowed MAC member and regular single-seater racer Darren Gumbley, of Tenbury Wells, the chance to bring along his own everyday mode of transport, a new 3ltr-supercharged Land Rover Discovery 5, to the iconic track. Darren said “I may have set my sights a little too high by aiming to get a mid-30s time in this sort of machine, but the applause and banter I received at the warm-up line each time certainly made my concerted efforts worthwhile, even though I only achieved a best time of 41.88 seconds.” “With the advent of more electric vehicles in the future, I think these special classes just highlight the very wide range of vehicles that can compete in hill climbing and I think the whole weekend was very well organised and great fun, and personally, I will still love driving the Discovery every single day.” A new women’s record was set over the weekend when website road test editor Vicky Parrott, of DriveTribe.com competed in a 600bhp Bentley Bentayga W12, setting a time of 35.53 seconds, 80 years after Miss May Cunliffe first set a ladies record at Shelsley Walsh in a three-litre Bentley. Vicky commented “I have driven on many circuits but this is my first visit to Shelsley Walsh and what a fabulous place it is, very narrow and daunting but this Bentayga is some serious machine and has enabled me to set a new women’s record, so I am very grateful to Bentley for giving me this opportunity … oh and also for the loan of the special Bentley racing overalls with the name of a certain David Brabham embroidered onto the waist band!” 11

Joining Darren and Vicky in the British Racing Green Invitation Class were MAC members Trevor Willis, 2012 British champion, who was driving the recently announced Ford Focus Electric winning his class with a time of 45.29 seconds and Simon Durling, who took second place overall behind Vicky in a Volkswagen Golf R with a time of 35.65 seconds, also being the fastest estate car of the weekend. Besides various invited classes, the weekend hosted entrants in the very closely fought Midland Hill Climb Championship where reigning champion Mike Turpin, from Hereford, in his Vauxhall VX220, won his Modified Production class to consolidate his current lead in this year’s standings. Saturday welcomed entrants in the motorcycle National Hill Climb Association championship, which produced class wins for Quentin Woollacott on a Suzuki, Mike Tilley on a Honda CR, Tommy Hodges on a Team GV KTM and Paul Jeffery on a KTM RC8R, with Ian Guy and Shelley Smithies taking the sidecar class. The New Barns Championship saw a win for Graham Ramsey in a Triumph TR7, from Thomas Frankland in a Westfield Mega S2000 and Pete Fletcher in an Abarth 500 Essesse. Paul Howells in his 911 RSR won the Porsche Club National Hill Climb Championship class and the Pirelli Ferrari Hill Climb Championship round was won by Nick Taylor in an F430 Coupe. Heavy rain affected leading drivers in the Top Ten Challenge run-offs with Trevor Willis taking the first round in his and Ed Hollier in his 1600cc Empire Evo taking the second. Best time of the day went to Wallace Menzies in his new Gould GR59M with a time of 24.04 seconds and class winners included Richard Brant in a Renault Clio 172 Sport, Robert Lancaster-Gaye in a Porsche GT2, David Warburton in a Caterham 7, Paul Jones in a Lotus Exige and Ash Mason in a Westfield SEi. Sports and racing car classes saw wins for Robert Kenrick in a GWR Raptor, Neville Rollason in a Jamun, Stuart Ridge in a Pilbeam MP53, Michael Henney in a Lotus Elan S3, Steven Mogg in a TVR Griffith 500, Richard Hollingworth in a DJ Firehawk, Philip Stader in an Alfa Romeo Berlina and Robin Nicholson in a Mallock Mk20.

Bentley Set New Records Bentley Motors took Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb by storm over the weekend with the 600bhp Bentayga shocking the crowds. Vicky Parrott drove the Bentley Bentayga up the famous hill climb with tremendous accuracy and speed to secure the first ever ladies hill record for an SUV, ninety years after Bentley last held a ladies record at the hill climb in 1927. Not only did Bentley take the ladies record but they took the overall hill record for an SUV and also won their class which include the supercharged Land Rover Discovery SI6 and the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The Bentley Bentayga took off from the start line, sitting back on its haunches, as 600bhp was let loose and stormed up the hill crossing the finish line at 99mph and setting a record time of 35.53 seconds. Mark Constanduros, Commercial Manager for Shelsley Walsh commented “The Bentayga really surprised many people over the weekend and has now put a mark in the sand for others to beat.” “Vicky adapted very well to the hill, having never experienced it and gained huge respect from the other competitors.” “It was fabulous to see Bentley enter the Bentayga and to create some new history. We hope other manufacturers will come forward next year and hope to see Bentley back with us too.” Vicky Parrott commented “I have driven on many circuits but this is my first visit to Shelsley Walsh and what a fabulous place it is, very narrow and daunting but this Bentayga is some serious machine and has enabled me to set a new women’s record, so I am very grateful to Bentley for giving me this opportunity … oh and also for the loan of the special Bentley racing overalls with the name of a certain David Brabham embroidered onto the waist band!” 13

Shelsley Walsh Electrified at British Racing Green The Midland Automobile Club’s new classes for low emissions and electric cars aimed at the car manufacturers was very well received at Shelsley Walsh over the weekend. The brand new Ford Focus Electric, launched only a few weeks ago, won the BEV class and surprised even the current leader of the British Hill Climb Championship. Trevor Willis accepted Ford’s invitation to drive it and by the end of the weekend was pleasantly surprised with his winning time of 45.29 seconds and was even tempted to take it home. Renault entered their brand new long range ZOE Dynamique driven by Autocar’s journalists Steve Cropley and Sam Sheehan. Between them they set a best time of 48.63 seconds. Mitsubishi not only provided their stylish Outlander PHEVs for course cars but also entered one in the PHEV class where they finished first in the hands of Simon Clark with a time of 44.78 seconds but also qualified for the SUV class finishing third against the Land Rover Discovery SI6 and the eventual winner Bentley Bentayga. There were demo runs from Tesla with the P85+ and the Renault Twizy and a classic VW Beetle that had been fully converted to electric power. Mark Constanduros, Commercial Manager for Shelsley Walsh commented “It was wonderful that some of the manufacturers entered into the event. It caused quite a lot of chatter and also some surprises.” “The event is a great sales opportunity and I hope that next year more of the manufacturers will get involved as this first event has been a great success. The public loved seeing the cars and being able to get a good look over them.” 14

June Breakfast Club Report By Chris Gittins and Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

Yet again a huge selection of sports, classic and specialist vehicles made their way down the sunny lanes to Shelsley Walsh in search of a hearty meal at the June breakfast club. Porsche, Audi, MG and Morgan were all well represented along with rarer models such Lotus, TVR and Pembleton all taking their place on the hill. Parked at the barn door was a striking dark blue Lotus Europa S2 fitted with period Cosmic Mk2 alloy wheels. Less than 4300 of this model were produced and are now a very rare sight on British roads. This immaculate 1969 example was fitted with the 1470cc engine/ transaxle originally designed for use in the Renault 16 and chosen by Lotus for its light and modern design. Alongside the Lotus was an equally pretty silver Porsche 356A dating from 1957. Over 50 years separated the two Alfa Romeo models that rested together in the courtyard. The red 1964 Alfa Spider owned almost from new by its driver on the day, and the high tech 2017 Alfa 4C built round its carbon fibre tub and capable of 160mph with 62mph arriving in 4.5 seconds. A fine selection of Jaguars appeared throughout the morning including a graceful, silver XK120 DHC, a number of more recent performance models such as the XKR convertible and a beautifully presented 1962 3.4 manual Mk2 Jaguar saloon in gunmetal grey that drew the crowds at Triangle. A selection of well-prepared Westfields arrived in the pits fitted with engines ranging from turbocharged Vauxhall units to the legendary 1300cc Suzuki Hayabusa motorcycle engine with its six speed sequential gearbox that in standard form produced over 173bhp and is regularly tuned to great effect in lightweight cars such as these. The tradition of “bonnets off for spectators to view is always popular with the mechanically minded and today was no exception. Thank you to all those owners that bought their cars, the oldest and youngest being over 100 years apart, for everyone to enjoy at the breakfast club. See you next month. 17

New Forest Foray Report By Cynthia and Barrie Scully. Photo Richard Warner

Monday 22nd May was the day when thirty-one “Classics descended on Moorhill House Hotel. They arrived in a variety of cars from an AC through a BMW MGBs,MGFs, Mazdas, a Morgan, Morris, Moto Guzzi, Porsche, Saab, two Jaguars and a TVR. Although just a short distance from the village of Burley the hotel was not easy to find, in our case we did two laps of the locality before finding the entrance to the lane, covered in deep stone chippings, leading to a narrow, tree canopied, tarmac downhill section with hard to see speed bumps, and a similar uphill section also with speed bumps (had someone warned them we were Shelsley people?) Dinner was at 7pm prompt and the food and service were very good with diners having plenty of time for chat and storytelling between courses and early to bed for most after a long and tiring day. Tuesday saw visits to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, the beautiful Exbury gardens nearby and also some of the other attractions suggested in the tour itinerary. During a break in the evening meal diners spent a few moments in quiet contemplation of the tragic events in Manchester. Wednesday saw us meeting for lunch at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club as guests of local MAC member John Bence. The weather was ideal for sunning on the terrace (or should that be the quarter deck?) We had a great time, with an abundance of good food, and the visit was made complete by the surprise appearance of Jeremy and Melodie Nightingale who were staying in the area. Thursday was another day for sight-seeing, some visiting the Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum, others Hurst Castle and some for a course of retail therapy. The New Forest Tour was another Classic and our thanks go to the Sports & Classics team organisers. 19

Roundabout Run Report By Jen and Mike Meakin

The morning dawned bright with a good forecast for the day. A full entry of fifty cars had been accepted for this run although many potential entries had to be turned away for logistical reasons! This event broke new ground for us in that it used the same venue for both the start and finish in the form of The Twisted Spoon at Upton Snodsbury. This was an excellent choice by the organisers not least because the coffee and bacon baps in the morning were delicious but also because the owner and staff were very enthusiastic and helpful (not easy when you are working on a Sunday morning). This positive approach was replicated at the end of the day when cream teas were served. After the usual cheery signing on with Gail and Alexa we had time to meet up with old friends and catch up on news since we last took part on an “MAC Tour” (we know all reports say this but it is always a pleasure). In too short a time (note to self “must get to the starts earlier”) it was our turn to get going and out into the sunshine. This was lovely, embarking on a tour through beautiful countryside and views to match on quiet roads embracing what seemed like all of the best roads skirting such places as Pershore, Elmley Castle, The Combertons and one of our favourites - Cleeve Hill. We even got close to a past MAC tour start at the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway! On arrival at the “Halfway Point “(which was the focus of the trip) Bourton on the Water, The organisers had played an Ace in arranging our own exclusive parking area at the Cotswold School and Leisure centre. From here it was only a short walk into the town centre of Bourton which was not surprisingly (being a sunny Sunday) pretty full of tourists. However refreshments were easily found and we were” fuelled up” for the return run. A sensible decision had been made in planning the return route to be somewhat simpler (but still attractive) and direct and we were soon sitting down to the cream teas and another social occasion. Without prompting certain owners with same car makes and models parked together in the pub car park and this was a nice touch. Sadly we had no one to park next to! We were not surprised during our excursion to see other classic cars on a different “Run” using the area around the Cotswolds which reaffirms the popularity of classic car ownership and the enjoyment of usage of cars from past times. We liked the concept of using the same venue for both the start and finish but it is appreciated that this concept is not practical in every case. “A full house by 10 am” was the verdict on Sunday morning at the July Shelsley Breakfast Club meeting with additional parking at Triangle being used to accommodate the extra number of sports and classic cars arriving at this ever popular event. The weather was very kind with bright sunshine from the start of the morning welcoming lots of new cars to the event including the very first Porsche 356 Speedster copy made by the Chesil company. This car has only recently been refurbished and looked superb in its ivory paint with red trim. An immaculate series 1 E type Jaguar sat at the gates alongside a beautiful Realm Heritage replica of a 1953 C Type Jaguar made locally in Honeybourne together with a lovely 1949 Triumph Roadster with its dickey seat (accessed by stepping on the rear bumper!) in full use. Morgan, MG, Lotus, Ferrari and Alfa Romeo models, old and new, were well represented. A pretty red Fiat Dino with its 2400cc twin cam Ferrari engine attracted lots of attention as did a very original “Moonstone Blue” Ford Sierra Cosworth with its factory BBS wheels and huge tail fin. The “Classic 300” tour called in for refreshments and used the breakfast club as the start point for their second run of the season as they visit many famous circuits and motoring venues between the months of May and October. Yet again the club would like to thank all the proud owners for bringing along their treasured vehicles for all to enjoy and congratulate them on their continued show standard of preparation. Car clubs are encouraged to attend and if you would like to visit as a group please contact the office before the event to enable us to plan the display. 21

Open Test & Reg Philips Trophy Meeting Report By Tony Adams

Scorching success at Shelsley Walsh. A brand new format for the weekend at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb has been declared a huge success by competitors and organisers alike. For the first time ever, hosts Midland Automobile Club held a timed but non-competitive practice day for club members on Saturday, with free admission to the public to come along and watch the action. Making her debut was local lady Anna-May Furness, of Abberley, who managed to squeeze in a lucky total of thirteen runs in her Proton Satria on Saturday and was thrilled with the opportunity, then going on to compete in the Roadgoing Series Production Cars up to 2000cc Class on Sunday, ending up mid table. Anna-May said “Having recently completed the driving school here I was amazed at how I could really put the instruction to good use in my first ever event and managed to produce consistent runs of 43 seconds. “The car has run faultlessly and even sports some racy ‘go faster’ stripes which I simply love, but then to actually go on and attain a 42.82 second run in competition is absolutely brilliant and I have had a truly enjoyable, fun and memorable weekend in the company of such friendly people.” Sunday was the Reg Phillips Trophy Meeting and another local driver making his debut was Elliott Hall, of Holt Heath, driving his Audi TT Coupe, who even managed to win his class, declaring “As a relatively new club member I have spectated on many occasions and following untold banter and goading from regular Lotus Exige competitor and neighbour Paul Jones, I decided to have a go myself and have loved every minute of it! “Being awarded ‘Novice Driver of the Day’ at the recent driving school I had the confidence to tackle the hill and have managed to hit my target time of 34 seconds, which also took the class win, so I am absolutely delighted and can’t wait for the next event and thanks must go to the organisers for this great meeting.” 23

24

The weekend also hosted championship drivers in Aston Martin cars and the Revington TR Register for Triumph cars, together with a dozen machines in the 500 Owners Association Championship, producing class wins for Tom Whittaker, Steve Small and Charles Reynolds respectively. Other class winners included Andrew Webber in a Lotus Elan, Simon Radnor in a Sylva Striker, Simon Jones in a Westfield, Duncan Andrews in a Porsche Cayman, Luke Trotman in a Mallock, Clive Austin in an Empire Wraith, Chris Stone in a Porsche 911, Mike Tregoning in a Pilbeam MP88 and David Gidden in a Lotus 23. MAC competition secretary Robin Webb, added “We have received very positive feedback from competitors over the weekend with many taking an amazing dozen runs on Saturday, which is great value for money and gives them chance to try difference driving lines and set-ups on their cars in a more relaxed atmosphere, all of which has proved to be very popular indeed, so we hope to repeat this event again at some time in the future.” The Sunday meeting took place in exceptionally hot conditions which didn’t favour the engines but certainly pleased the crowds, with drivers having three practice runs in the morning and then two competition runs in the afternoon, with Best time of Day going to Gary Thomas in his Force PC with a superb time of 27.87 seconds.”

Obituary - Max Trimble By John Moody

Max Trimble who died in June was a long term a very significant and popular personality in Midlands motor sport, he was 82. Always interested in cars he began racing in the mid 1950s in an Austin Healey 100 and soon moved on to a C type Jaguar with which he had some success so he decided to buy a Jaguar D type. Hearing that Ecurie Ecosse had their successful 1956 Le Mans cars for sale Max went to Edinburgh and bought D type, MWS 303. He campaigned this car in England at Silverstone, Goodwood and Oulton Park and in 1957 entered a four hour race at Spa Francorchamps in Belgium and it was there that he had a severe high speed accident as a result of which poor Max lost a leg and he was in hospital for a long time. On his recovery a few years later he competed at some hill climb events with an E type Jaguar, a Porsche and a quick Broadspeed Mini Cooper. However, Max’s enthusiasm for motor sport in all its forms did not diminish, he worked ceaselessly for Hagley and District Car Club, he was President more than once, was a Clerk of Course at Loton Park, Castle Combe and Wellesbourne and he commentated at Loton, Shelsley and elsewhere. We had some fun commentating together and with others and Max’s whimsical comments were much appreciated by many. He much enjoyed the social side of motoring and as a long term Life Member of the BRDC he did not miss many significant events at Silverstone and he was kind enough to invite some of us to join him there on occasions. Nothing quite like watching the British Grand Prix from the balcony of the BRDC suite, especially when a British driver won! Max gave up commentating at Shelsley a few years ago and he was not an MAC member but was regarded as one by members who listened to his comments from Top Ess, they enjoyed his informative style and the fact that he could recall motoring events from long ago and at a time when motor sport was more relaxed. We send our sympathy to his Max’s wife Pauline on her loss at this sad time. 27

Veteran Car Club Visit By Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

On Tuesday the 4th July The Veteran Car Club of Great Britain came to Shelsley Walsh. One by one, the pre-end of World War I, cars arrived into the paddock. The cars were both big and spectacular and created a magnificent display in the paddock area. They had some intricate brass work and all cars were pristine clean. Some of the cars arrived a little later after partaking in a timed run to Shelsley. Once all the cars had arrived the guests made their way to the restaurant to refresh and enjoy a well deserved lunch. The mill was open for all to look around and admire. Once lunch was finished the club was invited to participate in a run up the hill. The cars queued up awaiting their turn to take on the challenge of the famous Shelsley Walsh track. Despite the ages of the cars everyone made it to the top of the hill, except for one which made it only half way.

SNG Barratt Corporate Day By Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

SNG Barratt set up their exhibition and display unit in the main paddock allowing their guests to be warmly welcomed to the venue, ready for their experience of the famous Shelsley Walsh hill. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky and the weather continued to stay warm and dry for the whole day. The day was divided into several different experiences; passengers could be driven up the hill in a black Jaguar F-Type and there was also the chance to drive a Jaguar E-type up the hill. Finally there was an opportunity for all guests to take part in a timed run of the hill in their own cars. Many of the guests decided to experience all three with each driver being given timed slots. This allowed guests to arrive close to their allotted time, it also allowed guests to watch others, enjoy refreshments in the restaurant and enjoy the other experiences SNG Barratt had available. The day finished with one last untimed run for any driver to take part in. It was a great day and it was enjoyed by all guests and organisers. Thank you to Jessica Ralph and her team for organising the day. 29

British Hotchkiss Society Visit On Friday 9th June, Shelsley Walsh played host the British Hotchkiss society with cars dating back to the Edwardian period. From 10.30am the Hotchkiss cars began to appear in the paddock. The society had travelled from all over the country. One Hotchkiss car had travelled all the way from France for this event. There were also guests from Australia and Brazil. The paddock was greeted with a superb and diverse range of Hotchkiss cars. The guests were welcomed with a talk and presentation in the Stratstone Restaurant followed by a short tour of Shelsley Walsh venue including the Church and the Mill which had been especially opened for our guests. The non-motorsport aspect was very much appre-ciated by some of the partners! After the talk and tour, the guests participated in a couple of gentle, drives of the hill. The weather stayed dry and the sun even appeared, adding to the fantastic experience. The society seemed thrilled to partake in a drive on such a meaningful and historical track and showed their appreciation by making a generous donation to the Mill. The guests finished their visit with a lunch in the Stratstone Restaurant and then headed off to their next destination. It was a very enjoyable day and special thanks to Michael Scott for organising the trip.

Dibnah News By Tim King

Many of you I’m sure will have seen several Dibnahs starring on BBC TV’s Midlands Today programme recently when they ran an excellent item highlighting the restoration work done on the water mill. For those that missed it, you can see the longer three minute version on YouTube or Facebook. There is no truth in the rumour that we are building dressing rooms for the ‘stars’ of the show. This month the mill has welcomed visiting parties from the British Hotchkiss Society, Bromyard History Society and the Daimler+Lanchester owners club [Daimler Dart section] whose number included Quentin Wilson and his daughter. Last month I wrote that excessive flour milling caused the main shaft to be misaligned and can now report that Headley Fletcher has made a new bearing bracket worthy of his Jaguar heritage and the mill is now working again and producing flour. We have known for some time that the six foot diameter wooden spur gear is the weakest link in the mill operation so the Society needs to press on and replace it as soon as possible. All donations received from now on will go towards that goal. The whole project is estimated to cost £1,800 of which we have already spent £900 on seasoned wood sections. We are going to need your help to do this so you are invited to please be generous and contribute as much as you can, as soon as you can, to help us achieve the balance. Donations can be made at Shelsley meetings when visiting the mill or cheques made out to ‘Shelsley Water Mill Society’ should be sent to: The Shelsley Water Mill Society , c/o the Office, Shelsley Walsh, Worcs, WR6 6RP Finally, if you have not yet done so, do please pick up a copy of the new watermill brochure from the mill and pass it on to someone whom you know has never been, and don’t forget that there are mill booklets and greetings cards to purchase, all proceeds going towards the watermill maintenance. www.shelsleywatermill.com

Thank You By David Whitefoot

On the Saturday (practice) day of the Vintage meeting, when I finally got away to drive home, the car park was virtually empty. I peeled back the tonneau of the TR3 and found a TR3 owners instruction book lying on the passenger seat. I can only asume that some kind person had donated this to me but since there was no one around I could make no enquiries. Needless to say I am very pleased to have the book and would like to thank to kind donor. 33

June Driving School Report By Simon Fidoe. Photos By Geoff Robinson

Scorching School As if the weather for the Reg Philips meeting wasn’t hot enough, the sun continued to beat down on the Teme Valley and sap every ounce of energy from all of the hardy volunteers and participants of the June driving school.

Overall winner Chris Westwood with Alex Summers

Fortunately we did manage to get the most energetic and important part of the day (the hill walk, not breakfast!) out of the way before the temperature really started to rise.

The as ever eclectic mix of machinery was always going to be challenged by the heat, but one thing was guaranteed – lots of grip off the start line. It was good to see a few familiar faces returning to brush up their lines and stretch the legs of their trusty steeds. Once the obligatory group photo on the startline had been snapped, the drivers were keen to show that they had a handle on what makes for a controlled line up the 1000 yards of tarmac. The best demonstration of that was from Shelsley regular Chris Westwood in his Lotus Elise. Chris’ consistency throughout the day earned him the title of overall winner, with the chance of a drive in the works sports racing car courtesy of school sponsors Radical Sports Cars. In a real show of strength from the Hethel marque, Alex Atkins showed his co-driver the way by taking their Lotus Evora up and bagging himself the award for most improved over the course of his four marked runs. Despite his Austin Mini Cooper letting him down towards the end of the day, best novice went to Peter Kleyn who had made the journey up from Guildford and will hopefully be back to put his new found lines to use at the Classic Nostalgia meeting. The general standard of driving was very good and improvements were noticeable in every instance throughout the course of the day. If you are wondering whether it is worthwhile coming along to one of the Driving Schools in your own road car, don’t hesitate to email drivingschool@mac1901.co.uk whilst we still have places available for the 1st August and 5th September. 35

June Black Plate Wednesday Report By Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

Having had to postpone the planned May BPW due to bad weather, our June event could not have been better with summer sunshine and temperatures to match. It set the perfect scene for our afternoon of tea in the glorious Worcestershire countryside. Guests arrived in a range of ‘black plate’ cars plus a beautiful and more modern Ferrari just to add to the variety. Sheltering from the sun in one paddock shed was a 1959 AC Ace. Further along the paddock and outside of the sheds sat a 1965 AC Cobra. There was also a range of Morgan cars including the Nightingales striking yellow 4 Plus 4 and a blue Morgan Plus 8. There were some 50’s and 60’s Triumphs and a 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback and some immaculate pre-war and early post war cars too. They were all arranged collectively in the paddock for everyone to admire throughout the afternoon. On arrival guests were welcomed with a refreshing glass of Pimms (or two!) and took their places in the courtyard beneath the parasols. Some retreated to the shaded bar, whilst others took a walk around the grounds of Shelsley Walsh and also the Water Mill that had been specially opened for the day with the water wheel fully operational in full rumbling order. Tea was served in china cups and cakes and sandwiches were served on three-tiered plates - all very traditional and British with a delicious choice of sandwiches, chocolate cakes and scones. The afternoon consisted of two sittings. Both sittings offered a relaxed, sociable and enjoyable atmosphere for all who attended. There are just two more opportunities to enjoy this experience in 2017 with the next Black Plate Wednesday just over a month away and we hope to make it as successful as today. Our fingers are crossed for more sunshine. 37
