The final competitive hill climb, Autumn Speed Finale, has now finished and what a great season we have had. Thank you to all our officials, marshals and volunteers who put in so much personal time to help keep the events running. Since the last issue we have had a few other events taking place, the biggest being Retro Rides which is a wonderful event, some very interesting cars with some very ingenious preparations like pink smoking tyres. We have been hosting Retro Rides for a few years now and it is great to know some of their entrants have gone on to take up hill climbing.

Trevor Willis – 2017 Hill Climb Champion

MAC Member Trevor Willis became the 2017 Avon Tyres/TTC Group British Hill Climb Championship securing the title a few weeks ago at Prescott. A wonderful achievement from him with another two rounds still to go at Doune and Loton Park. Trevor now becomes a double British Champion adding the 2017 title to his 2012 title. It was a busy year for Trevor who also got the chance to compete in the electric class at Shelsley Walsh’s British Racing Green in the brand new Ford Focus Electric setting a new record for an Electric Hatchback BEV with a time of 45.29 seconds. Trevor is also becoming increasingly involved with our Driving Schools too, so a huge congratulations from us all!

MAC Classic 2018 The Sports and Classic Section launched the MAC Classic at our recent Classic Nostalgia back in July. This is a big fund raising event for the MAC with the proceeds going towards the restora-tion and conservation of the Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb. The aim is to get 200 entries with 50 at each of the start points and finishing at the hill climb. Online entries have so far lead the way, proving very effective with a large number of entries being completed online. If you are unable to book a place online there is an entry form included in this issue and see the advert opposite for further details.

Pershore Plum Festival

Over the August Bank Holiday the MAC exhibited at the Pershore Plum Festival with a variety of cars on display. With two full on race cars, Keith Harris with his Chevron and Clive Austin with his Empire and 8 classics, there was plenty for the public to see. By mid afternoon Keith and Clive decide to have a “Sound Off, with Keith meaning business and putting on a set of headphones. The noise certainly woke the show up and crowds could be seen diverting to the stand. A very relaxed day in glorious weather with lots of interest and activity on the Simulator too. 5

Tony Fletcher Obituary By Simon Durling

Tony was an MAC member for nearly 40 years. He was born in Kidderminster and lived in the area until his retirement when he moved to the Scotland he loved. Tony started his motorsporting life as a timekeeper in the late 1950s. He became a Speed Clerk of the Course in 1973 officiating at events which eventually became the MSA British Hillclimb Championship. He was co-ordinator of the BHC for over 30 years and during this time also started the Midland Hillclimb Championship. He, of course had Maureen’s help throughout. They Tony Fletcher (right), one of only three people to have created the Midland Rescue units been recipient of MSA Lifetime Achievement Award and the HRH Prince Michael Award of Merit which brought much improved safety management to the Speed events. He was an MSA Steward and a former member of the Clerks and Stewards working group. He sat on the Speed Events committee, Hillclimb and Sprint committee, the Records panel and was a member of the MSA training team from 2001-2010. He acted as Clerk of the Course at the MAC Sprint Schools at Curborough. Tony was awarded the Prince Michael of Kent Award of Merit in 1993 and the MSA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. He was a friend to all in the hillclimbing world. He was meticulous in all that he did in any capacity and if he said yes you were 5th in the championship with 120 points you had no need to check! He and Maureen organised the various awards dinners with the same attention to detail and presided over some great evenings in the best hillclimbing tradition. Tony was never shy of innovation whether in class structures, changing the run off procedure or creating the Midland Marshals’ Championship. As an administrator his experience was invaluable and his knowledge encyclopaedic. During meetings whether Speed or Committee if a question could not be answered – ask Tony always worked! His advice was always valuable and given willingly. Sadly his illness prevented him from attending the British Hillclimb Championship’s 70th anniversary held at Shelsley Walsh in August and he was sorely missed. Hillclimbing owes so much to Tony. Our sympathy is with Maureen and all his family.

Operations Manager’s Report By Robin Webb

Stephen Moore takes the high road. Credit Stuart Santos Wing

At the time of writing, our Shelsley Walsh season has finished and we have just one sprint to deliver on October 8th at Curborough. This event is currently oversubscribed and, once again, proves how popular this friendly sprint seasonender is. Ferrari Owners Club always has their last event at this meeting and it contributes towards the ‘end of term’ feeling which is why it is such an enjoyable event. Will the weather gods stay with us for just one more outing?

The September meeting at Shelsley gave us some headaches in terms of too many entries but we came up with a reasonable solution that enabled us to look after all championship entrants and offer all others at least one day out of the weekend. Sadly we could not run the motorbikes but I have a solution for next year which, with some juggling to the calendar, should see them return for at least two weekends. Some maintenance work has been carried out in the paddock with new roof felting to the paddock office and repairs to the guttering downpipe which should now keep ‘Pam’s corner’ much drier. We are now preparing the winter maintenance schedule which will include work to the garage/shelters and possibly some improvements to the Paddock toilets if I can persuade the treasurer of the benefits! Normally, at this time of year, we start to ‘break down’ the hill which requires everything that is not screwed down or fixed, being collected and stored in the black barn and repaired or renovated as necessary. However this will now not happen until after the Roger Albert Clark Rally so that will now be a November job. I must thank Pam, Margaret, Cathy and Veronica for doing their usual efficient job at signingon and all the marshals for their enthusiasm and hard work during the year. Also our Clerks of the Course and control room crew. And also the unsung heroes who will hate me saying it but Roger Warren and his timing team and Al Rayner who can turn his hand to almost anything including ‘unsticking’ marooned roadsweepers and non starting ambulances. This month we said goodbye to Tony Fletcher who sadly passed away earlier this month. He built The Midland Hill Climb Championship into a hugely successful entity and I will miss him a great deal. He helped me with some sage advice and sensible comments, especially in my early days as Competitions Secretary. My condolences go out to his wife Maureen and his family. 11

Black Plate Wednesday Report By Robin Webb

Our last BPW of the year took place this week and the venue was changed from the Courtyard to the Members’ tent with all the classic cars making a beautiful display in front of the seats and viewing area. And what a spectacular location this was on a glorious summer’s day. The views across the Teme valley are always special and this was no exception. Ice cool Sangria was the special drink of the day and everybody sat down at 3.15pm to enjoy the three tiered trays of sandwiches, cakes and scones served on traditional English China. Pots of tea were also served in the traditional way and it really did feel like stepping back in time. We played the game of “which car would we like to take home” and it was a near impossibility. A glorious pre-war BMW 327, an open top E-Type Jaguar series 1.5, A Jensen Healey, several Morgans, two fantastic TVR’s including an early Grantura and the very first 365 Chesil (which is a repro of an early Porsche). The change of venue made it feel very different and to judge the success, it was 6pm before the majority decided to leave. Next year we will aim for two ‘on the hill’ and two in the Courtyard so that there are choices for those wishing to partake. A lovely day in a beautiful location and perfect weather and good company.

September Driving School By Simon Fidoe Photo John Hallett

• End of season finale • Well, what a year we’ve had • The last school of 2017 was to be both challenging and successful A recent accident meant that Alex Summers, one of our regular instructors, was only able to spectate from the sidelines. We were, however, lucky enough to be able to call on the services of our latest recruit to the driving school team, 2012 British Hillclimb Champion Trevor Willis, who just happened to have been announced two days before as Champion Elect for 2017. Congratulations to Trevor and best wishes to Alex for a speedy recovery. The weather gods were definitely not smiling in the morning as it was lashing down with rain just as the keenest participants were arriving. We were lucky enough to get a break in the weather whilst we did the track walk, then it continued again as we started first runs. The benefit of the wet tarmac for first timers, was that they were able to get used to the low levels of grip rather than having first runs in the dry, and then having the grip dashed by a sudden downpour. Best Novice went to Matthew Cartmel (below left) in his somewhat potent VW Golf. Matthew dealt well with the general lack of grip, which was exacerbated by the excess amounts of power that he had at his disposal.

Dave Moore (above right) who had made the journey from Cornwall to use his recently acquired Mk2 Ford Escort, won the prize for Most Improved, having demonstrated a steady improvement of both lines and control over the four marked runs. The prize for Overall Winner went to the “tamer of the beast” that was Andrew Cottrill (opposite left) in his ferocious Subaru Impreza. A well deserved award for being able to keep the beast under control. Rumour has it that it may have been useful practice for a future Mod Prod Subaru grudge match at Shelsley! 16

The track did dry out after lunch, and a handful of mechanical retirements meant that we were able to get a few more runs in than usual, and those that took them all got 10 (yes, ten!) in total. Given that this was the final driving school this year, we are now able to announce that the Overall Winner with the highest score from all five driving schools was Chris Westwood, (top right) who will have the opportunity to drive a works sports car courtesy of our sponsors Radical. Congratulations to Chris – enjoy the experience. We will shortly be announcing the dates for the Driving Schools in 2018. Be sure to book early to ensure you secure your place drivingschool@mac1901.co.uk

Autumn Speed Finale Report By Tony Adams

The final competitive events of the year took place with a capacity entry list at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, hosted in perfect conditions over the weekend, where several championships also reached their conclusions. Burntwood driver Steve Barnard clinched the Midland Speed Championship title in his space-frame Audi TT for the second year running and commented: “This has been a fantastic year for me as the car has run faultlessly and I won by quite a margin which proves that last year’s win was not just a fluke!” The ever-popular Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship was won by Tony Shute who exclaimed that his wonderful Lotus 69 racing car was merely ‘a chassis and 11 banana boxes of bits’ only two years ago, so his patient rebuilt and hard fought season’s campaign has been a real success. Championship organiser Paul Matty, said: “This all started 26 years ago when myself and four friends took part in a driver school and it has grown steadily ever since, now attracting well over 20 competitors in a wide variety of Lotus cars, both sports and racing versions. “The championship is decided on a unique handicap basis that we have created ourselves, simply to ensure a fair comparison as the Lotus cars taking part are all so very different and this is the first year that we have ever had an equal tie for second place, for drivers David Hamillton and Geoff Stallard.” Guests over the weekend were competitors in the Morgan Sports Car Club Techniques Speed Championship and the title for this year went to classic vehicle restorer George Proudfoot, aged 73, of Fareham, in his beautiful 1939 Series One, which he has owned since the mid 1970s. Steve Small won the The Revington TR Register class in his TR7 V8 and Geraint Evans took the honours in the Porsche Club Speed Championship class in his 911 Carrera. David Snelson won the Pirelli Ferrari Hill Climb 18

Championship class in his Ferrari F430, with Graham Beale and Matthew Eady respectively winning rounds of the Classic Marques Speed Challenge. Other class winners on Saturday included Andrew Till in an MG ZR105, Dave West in a Peugeot 106, Chris Berrisford in a Subaru Impreza (1st pic), John Bradshaw in a Westfield, Mike Gallery in a Mini Cooper, Paul Jones in a Lotus Exige (2nd pic), Duncan Andrews in a Porsche Cayman, Chris Jones in a Force TA, Russell Haynes in a Zeus ZR163, Chris Green in an OMS 28 and Fyrth Crosse in his Dempster Ensign. Sunday saw class wins for Roy Standley in a Mitsubishi Lancer, David Warburton in a Caterham 7, Tim Dennis in a Mini Cooper, Darren Balster in a Peugeot 205, Ash Mason in a Westfield (3rd pic), Darren Gumbley in a Force TA, Michael Tregoning in a Pilbeam MP88 and Hugh Whitcomb in a Mini Cooper. Best time of the day on Saturday went to Chris Green with a time of 27.05 seconds in his OMS 28 and on Sunday, Richard Hollingworth posted a best time of 27.09 in his DJ Firehawk (4th pic). Mark Constanduros, Commercial Manager of hosts Midland Automobile Club commented: “As the season closes we look back on yet another tremendously successful year for the club, with entries over subscribed for all of our competitive events and with fantastic feedback on the highly successful Classic Nostalgia weekend. “We obviously have a great deal to live up to next year, but the MAC team of staff, members and volunteers here at Shelsley Walsh is already making further big plans for the future!” MAC stalwart and regular competitor Keith Harris (bottom), who took best time of day on both days of the Classic Nostalgia weekend in his Chevron B25 and B19 cars reflected: “The time and effort put in by everybody at Shelsley Walsh is a true credit to the club and its organising teams, and this Autumn Finale weekend has been the perfect ending to a great year of outstanding events.” 19

Mira Report By Robin Webb

Our penultimate Sprint of the season gave us a fright when the skies looked ominous halfway through the morning and we did have the odd shower. But it is a track that dries out very quickly and most competitors had at least one dry run. Best time of the day, driving in Class K&L merged, was Peter Goulding in his Mygale with a time of 44.08s. Other class winners were Mike Edwards in his Mini, David West in his Peugeot 106 Gti, Andrew Cottrill in his very nimble Subaru Impreza, John Palmer (WestfieldSE), Nick Mugglestone sharing a drive with his dad, Darren Balster, David Bickley, Steve Brennan, Stuart Bickley and Christopher Price in his DSP IV. A very happy Philip Stader won the handicap class M1/M2 in the very smart 1968 Alfa Romeo. This year we moved course control in to a strategically parked land rover and we also relocated the administration and results office into the marquee situated in the paddock. This worked well and was well received by all. The ‘new for this year’, awning has a much more solid/permanent feel to it than the old marquee and we will stick with the same format next year. Results for the Sunrise Sprint Championship will be issued shortly together with latest championship positions. Just two rounds remain with Curborough and Castle Combe taking place in October. 23

Members’ Day By Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

The hill climb meetings may be over for the season but the activity on the hill has not stopped just yet. Around ninety members and their guests arrived at Shelsley Walsh, with a variety of their road legal cars, ready to participate in a day of hill activity, for the final Members’ Day of the year. The day started with a cold and frosty morning, as drivers and passengers signed on. The paddock soon warmed up as the sun broke through the clouds. The morning began with everybody in good spirits and keen to take on the hill. There was a mixture of cars from an Audi TTS to an Austin Healey Sprite to a range of Westfield’s, taking on the steep climb of the hill. The runs continued until lunchtime, when both the members, guests and marshals were ready for a much needed refreshment break. After lunch, the calm paddock soon became alive again with the warming sound of cars. The runs began again, with the three batches continuously running one after the other, allowing drivers and passengers to take advantage of the increasing number of runs they could participate in. In between batches partakers were able to watch other drivers, passengerhop into a different car, socialise with other members or recharge with a hot drink from the Stratstone restaurant. The sociable atmosphere is what makes Members’ Day so enjoyable. The day finished with an informal car show, sponsored by Holden Vintage and Classic and judged by Jeremy Holden. The cars took to the ‘stage’ in the forward paddock area, allowing Jeremy to wander around admiring the vehicles. The winners of the categories were chosen and announced in a small presentation. The winners included Andrew Darwent in his Morgan 4/4 for ‘Best Classic Sports Car,’ Christopher Bond in his MG A, for ‘Most Smiles Per Mile’ and the overall winner Daniel Kirk in a very impressive Mercedes Benz E63 AMG Wagon in F1 safety car spec with 800 plus BHP, for the ‘Car The Judge Would Most Like To Take Home.’ Each winner was awarded with a voucher donated very kindly by Jeremy Holden. Daniel Kirk also received the ‘Members’ Day’ trophy which is made up of part of Michael Schumacher’s F1 car. All who attended were then able to celebrate and reminisce on the day over a drink in the courtyard bar. We would like to thank all who helped with the day, Marshals, Richard Weaver and 365 Medical, without whom, the day wouldn’t be possible. Also, thank you to Phil Nuthall for managing the day, as event director, and to Jeremy Holden for sponsoring and judging the car show. Finally, thank you to all who attended – it was a great day. We hope to welcome you to Members’ Day next year.

September Breakfast Club Report By Chris Gittins and Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

Light rain showers did little to dampen the enthusiasm of over 100 drivers of sports, classic and enthusiast cars that braved the patchy weather to attend the September Breakfast Club meeting at Shelsley Walsh. The planned “open bonnet” display had to be postponed for obvious reasons but, based on the level of interest, will feature in a future Breakfast Club. The event has enjoyed a run of 6 months without rain so based on that fact alone we consider ourselves very lucky and thank all the attendees for their ongoing support. V8 powered vehicles were popular and arrived in all guises. Morgans and TVRs rumbled in with hoods down and a pair of very well presented Daimler V8 250 saloons were early arrivals, burbling into the paddock with their Edward Turner designed V8 engines that copied the hemispherical combustion chamber design from Triumph motorcycles also designed by Turner. Ford Mustangs produced 46 years apart but both with 5 litre V8 power parked together and a huge 1972 Ford F100 pick up fitted with a 6400cc V8, and featuring in the upcoming Chanel 4 film “Forgiveness,” took up most of the entrance to the restaurant enclosure. Porsche, MG, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar and Lotus were all well represented and immaculately prepared models across the range lining up for inspection. At the other end of the scale a 1964 competition prepared Austin Mini drew a lot of attention as it took its own spot on the grass. With its 1340cc engine producing 112BHP it is quite a performer and was very popular with the visitors. The October Breakfast Club meeting is the last of the year and is traditionally very well attended. We look forward to seeing you and your vehicles next month as a close to the season and encourage any car clubs attending to contact the office in advance to arrange suitable parking. 27

Dibnah News By Tim King

The Mill has been in [almost] full flow making flour for the August Breakfast Club and the Hill climb championship challenge weekend. Apart from that and the rebuilding of a water pump [more of which in a later newsletter], some Dibnahs have been busy producing cider which has prompted talk of making an apple scratter powered by the mill. Maybe. We have also recently unearthed some photographs from the early days of the mill restoration project circa 2008/9 which prompted some interesting before and after images including a general shot of the restaurant / mill yard which appeared to have a flooding issue back then compared with one taken at the recent Classic Nostalgia meeting. Our Henry Bamford ‘Rapid’ mill grinder, used for producing animal feed and built in the early 1900s, was acquired for the Society from Cornwall in 2008. Bob Smith was instrumental in carrying out the restoration you can see working in the mill workshop complete with the engagement mechanism designed by fellow Dibnah Rod Sproat. As a footnote, Joe Bamford left Henry Bamford+Sons [which ceased trading in 1968] in 1948 to form his own company – the now world renowned JC Bamford [Excavators] Ltd. www.shelsleywatermill.com

MG SV Visit By Anouzka Lowrie-Herz

Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb was greeted with an array of the very rare MG SV cars on Sunday 24th September, having chosen the iconic venue to assemble. There are approximately only twenty-five of these cars in the UK altogether and thirteen of them were displayed in the forward paddock. This made the meeting particularly special. There was also a mixture of other MG cars on display, as this special meeting had attracted extra spectators. The owners of the cars were offered the opportunity to partake in a couple of slow drives of the hill. After the drivers and passengers had been briefed and had signed-on, the driving began. The two runs agreed extended to four, as time was on our side and the majority of MG owners were eager to experience the hill again. The drives came to an end and their visit finished with a lovely lunch served for them in the Stratstone restaurant. Thank you to all who attended it was great to see a large number of rare MG SV’s gathered in our paddock. Also a special thank you to Marc Hanson for arranging the day and Phil Nuthall for managing the hill. 31
