Years of hard work will have happened by the time you get this issue of the MAC News. Classic Nostalgia is being billed as one of the “not to miss events of the year”. As I sit writing this we can’t believe the interest that is being generated around the return of the Auto Union, 30 Group B rally Cars and the UK debut of the Audi IMSA S4 GTO, plus stars like Hans Stuck, Jimmy McRae, Russell Brookes and David LLewellin. We will have a full report in the next issue.

For me it has been a very special time as Claire and I welcomed Thomas into the world on Saturday 2nd July. We would both like to thank everyone for all their kind wishes, cards and flowers. No doubt you will see him at some point as he needs to keep the family tradition going, motorsport!

The new Social Team has been working hard on social events for the members and one that was a huge success and no doubt will continue is the Black Plate Wednesday.

There is a report further in this issue.

The driving schools have been doing really well and have received some great feedback with most of them pretty much full. We will again be running the same number next year so if you would like to gain experience or get a taste of what it is all about then sign up and have a go.

Don’t forget we do have Members’ Day on 12th August, why not come along and mix with fellow club members and spend a day on the hill, and enjoy the evening entertainment and informal car show?

BMW Centenary To mark 100 years of the Bayerische Motoren Werke, BMW, the BMW Car Club held a day on the hill for its club members. Sadly the weather was pretty horrible towards the later afternoon bringing the activities to a slightly earlier end.

However there were some wonderful cars being driven which included three ex-touring cars, one of which was being driven by Nick Whale who hadn't been to the hill for quite some years.

BMW UK also sent a very hot and bright orange M3 GTS which was driven by Nick Foster, BTCC driver for West Surrey racing.

He also took people for passenger rides which were awesome! It arrived with a full tank of fuel for 260 miles and was empty after sixteen miles!

Toby Moody was also on hand and did an informal interview session at lunchtime with both Nick Foster and Nick Whale, chatting BTCC. We also had a brand new M2 and M4 GTS, something for everyone!

June Driving School Report

Bugatti vs Frazer Nash face off at Driving School The weather gods couldn’t make up their minds whether they wanted to bless or curse the Teme Valley for the June Driving School. As it was, the day started off fine after the deluge the evening before had cleaned the track beautifully, but left a damp and treacherous route through the Esses to test everybody’s ability.

With the hill walk completed, we managed to get through most of the morning runs in the dry before lunchtime, when the heavens opened yet again and set in for a wet afternoon.

The standard of driving was proving to be as good as ever and the challenging conditions only served to demonstrate the fact, with most taking on board the advice given, and adapting to the conditions.

The vast array of vehicles spanned just under a century with an equally wide variation of power on tap, all of which added to the fantastic diversity.

One of our earlier participants having previously suffered mechanical failure, obviously came back to complete his unfinished business. Edmund Burgess was our overall winner in his immaculate Type 51 Bugatti, having won on count back from Ian Bingham in his Frazer Nash. As if the two of them weren’t close enough with their scoring, Ian’s efforts earned him the title of Most Improved.

A relatively late entry came from across the globe as James Jarvie proved to be Best Novice having decided to enter whilst visiting from Oz. Pam need have had no concerns about how well he was looking after the 911.

Competition Secretary’s Report

It’s half-time for our season of sprints and hill climbs and we are now busily preparing for Classic Nostalgia. July is very busy for us as there are five events over three weekends to organise starting with the Reg Phillips which had its usual mix of cars and motorbikes. It then seamlessly transformed overnight into the VSCC meeting on the Sunday and judging by the kind comments from competitors during the weekend we appear to have made it enjoyable all round.

In June we had our first visit from the British Hill Climb Championship and entries looked a little thinner than in previous years but we had good support in the form of the Midland Hill Climb championship and the Ferrari boys who put on a good show.

Weather was very kind considering the English summer so far! The Chairman invited an ‘A’ list of guests to have a VIP view from Bottom S and one new guest was Rob Jones CEO of the Motor Sports Association who later told us that he had thoroughly enjoyed the day. A credit to everybody that we managed to impress the top man in UK motorsport.

Newly introduced at Shelsley on the weekend of the 2nd/3rd July was Friday afternoon signing-on for competitors. We had tried it just two weeks earlier at the Anglesey Sprint and it was extremely popular amongst competitors so we thought we’d give it a go at the hill climb. Suffice to say that it was very well received so we now include it at most of our events. It also works better for the scrutineers who have offered to start on Friday afternoon if at least one is available during the afternoon.

Public car parking continues to develop with excellent management from Will Dayson and his team of happy helpers. They now also take responsibility for selling programmes (as the cars park up) and this seems to work extremely well with revenue from sales steadily increasing.

More and more members and spectators are bringing their classic cars to the hill climb events and they continue to receive privilege parking which has created an excellent display for all to enjoy.

Our double-header at Anglesey Sprint went very well and full marks to our officials and marshals who ran it seamlessly, and receiving great praise from the competitors. Saturday was sunny and Sunday held on until mid afternoon when the heavens opened and concluded proceedings. But two great days of sprinting and my first time at this picturesque circuit.

Current leader of the Sunrise Sprint Championship is Steve Brown followed by Richard Hollingworth, Gordon Hick, John Palmer and Richard Arrowsmith (all joint 2nd on equal points). Next sprint is Blyton on the 31st July. Let’s see who will be leading after that.

Williams F1 Heritage Collection Tour 2

On 16th June we gave those who missed out on the first Williams F1 Heritage tour the chance to have a look around this wonderful collection again.

We were a much smaller group this time, so we met in the Trophy Room, where there was a splendid array of trophies on show along with driver helmets from those who drove for the team.

Unfortunately Dickie Stanford couldn’t do the complete tour but was on hand in the heritage workshop to chat to everyone as he prepared the cars for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and tell about his extensive experiences with Williams as Team Manager.

The rest of the tour was led by Simon who gave everyone the chance to get up close to the cars in the collection and to grapple with various steering wheels.

Another splendid tour which was enjoyed by everyone.

Best of British Report

Two in a row for Moran...

Two wins for Ludlow driver Scott Moran enforced his lead in the 2016 British Hill Climb Championship at the ‘Best of British’ event at Shelsley Walsh over the weekend.

In perfect conditions and in front of large crowds of spectators, five-time former champion Moran drove his Gould GR61X racing car in his usual smooth style to take rounds 9 and 10, gaining maximum points.

Scott, said afterwards: “I am really happy with that as the car ran faultlessly and I have been pushed really hard this weekend by both Trevor Willis and Wallace Menzies, and when Will Hall gets his car fully sorted he too will be a real threat as he was doing 147mph over the finish line!

“Although I appear to have a big lead in the championship at the moment on paper, things will balance out and the others will be much closer when dropped scores are taken into account as only so many rounds can count.”

Willis and Menzies each took second and third places in the run-offs to keep them in contention for the next rounds at Loton Park this coming weekend.

With a capacity entry, the competition was always going to be fierce throughout the various classes and none more so than the huge 1100cc racing car class which saw a win for Scottish driver Steve Marr in his PCD Saxon from young driver Tom Poole in the new Empire Evo, followed by racing car constructor Steve Owen in his OMS28.

In the road going class for car up to two litres, spirited driver Richard Brant held off a strong challenge from Lotus drivers Ken Williamson of Oxford and Teme Valley’s Sarah Thorne to maintain his class lead in the Midland Hill Climb Championship.

Other class winners included Bruce Aitkin in a Citroen Saxo, Roy Standley in a Mitsubishi Evo5RS, David Warburton in a Caterham 7, Mike West in Westfield SEW, Andrfew Russell in a Ginetta G15, Ash Mason in a Westfield Allan McDonald in his Mini Evo and Karl Schollar in his Shelsley Special Spectre Mk7.

Well in front in the Hill Climb Leaders championship is south-west driver Colin Satchell who extended his lead with a clear class win in his beautifully prepared Peugeot 205 and reigning Midland Hill Climb Champion Mike Turpin of Hereford once again took an emphatic win in his class with the Vauxhall VX220.

The hugely popular racing car classes saw wins for David Tatham, Tim Davies, David Uren, Trevor Willis, Joshua Moss, Stuart Ridge, Ben Tranter and Ed Hollier.

An invitation class for competitors in the Pirelli Ferrari Hill Climb Championship saw Nick Taylor take the win in his F430 Coupe, followed by former championship winner Richard Prior in his F355 GTB.

Reg Philips and VSCC Report

A Century of cars at Shelsley Walsh...

Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb hosted two very different events over the weekend that attracted competitors and spectators from across the UK with entries being well over subscribed months in advance.

Organised by the Midland Automobile Club, Saturday saw modern era sports, classics and racing machines competing in the Reg Philips Trophy Meeting together with classes for invited Triumph, Aston Martin and Westfield car clubs together with the Historic Rally Car Register.

Adding yet another diversification were over thirty motorcycles competing in their own National Hill Climb Association’s championship, which saw class wins for Simon Wilson, Tommy Short, Tommy Hodges, Paul Jeffrey and sidecar combination crew Sam Matthewman and Kelly Martin.

Best overall time of the day went to Cornish driver Mike Tregoning in his Pilbeam MP88 with a time of 27.51 seconds, followed closely by local driver Derek Sweeney in an OMS and eighty-year-old Welsh driver Bill Morris, also in a Pilbeam single-seater racing car.

Class wins were taken by Dave West, Steven Mogg, John Bradshaw, Tim Dennis, Aaron Walters, Duncan Andrews, Steve Brown, Kevin Cole, Nicholas Scott, Duncan Fish and Fyrth Crosse, with Martin Harvey winning the Northampton Motorsport Speed Series class in his Westfield SEW. Roadgoing Production Class winner Dave West, of Droitwich Spa, commented: “This is always a very good event and a huge entry of nearly twenty cars in our class proves the attractiveness for people to compete in relatively standard cars and I was particularly thrilled that my son Nick came third in class while sharing my Peugeot 106 GTi.” Another delighted local man was Droitwich driver Duncan Andrews who attained a personal best time of 32.18 seconds to take the Modified Production class in his Porsche Cayman SVR. 19

Sunday’s event was jointly hosted by the Vintage Sports Car Club and attracted many majestic machines dating back to Edwardian times, together with Vintage and Post Vintage cars, each separated into various classes subject to engine power and number of modifications.

Providing the marvel of motorsport in its purest form, the smell of burning rubber and outrageous engine sounds from such nostalgic machinery provided a wonderfully atmospheric spectacle for visitors.

A perfect example of this was the 1929 Napier Bentley of Chris Williams, from Penn, Wolverhampton, who said: “This car has a twenty-four litre, forty-eight valve, six overhead cam engine which produces 600 brake horse power and being aircraft powered it is surprisingly reliable, so I have such confidence in it that I don’t even bring any tools with me, not even a plug spanner!

“I have had the car for fifteen years and have brought it to Shelsley Walsh every year since as this is my favourite track and people simply love the sight, sounds and downright silliness of this car.

“Known mainly for my ‘tyre-smoking’ start line antics, people often say I could improve my times here by driving more sensibly, but I feel duty-bound to entertain the crowds, even though I have just about worn out yet another set of expensive tyres, but hey, I love this place and this event.”

John Ryder, of the VSCC, added: “Having been a MAC member for many years and having been with the VSCC for over fifty years, it is always a great pleasure to come to Shelsley Walsh as the ambiance and organisation is simply excellent.

“Most of these wonderful cars managed to behave themselves and it is extremely rewarding for people to see them being used as they were intended, and full credit must go to the owners who put them through their paces with verve and determination up this iconic hill.”

VSCC class and handicap winners included Duncan Potter in a 1931 MG Monthlery Midget, Peter Tierney in a 1930 Lea Francis Hyper S, Hugh Mackintosh in a 1917 Hudson Super Six Racer, David Pryke of Worcester in a 1936 Morgan Riley, Durward Lawson in a 1937 Riley Special and Harriet Collings in a 1926/28 Bentley.

July Breakfast Club

Shelsley Walsh Breakfast Club back on track...

Organisers of the monthly Breakfast Club meeting at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb reported a good turnout of cars and several first-time visitors, even though the British Grand Prix, Classic Le Mans and other motoring events were taking place the same day.

Around 100 cars of all descriptions were arranged for display in the paddock and first to arrive was regular visitor Richard Green, of Kingswinford, who turned up in his brand new Audi R8.

Richard, a Wolverhampton building contractor, said: “My friends and I like to be first here to ensure a good parking place and to watch the other people arriving, as this is a fantastic venue and attracts such a wide diversity of fantastic cars.

“I am a self-confessed Audi fanatic and in only the past few years have had two Q7s, an RS5, an A3 Cabriolet and now the wonderful R8, oh, and I have the very latest triple-turbo SQ7 on order!”

Two young men turning heads were Johnny Mockett and Zaki Al-Khamiri, both aged 22, who arrived in a well-used Volkswagen Polo, in which they will set off from Goodwood on Saturday to travel over 10,500 miles to Mongolia.

Johnny, from nearby Menith Wood, commented: “We are taking part in the amazing Mongol Rally 2016 which stipulates that the chosen vehicle must be worth no more than £1,000. This is a charity event and we are viewing this as a challenging adventure after finishing our university studies, as well as helping to raise funds towards our four chosen charities.

“The car itself is a 1989 one-litre Polo with over 150,000 on the clock and is a last minute replacement for an identical one which was sadly written off when a tree fell on it in the recent high winds, so we are possibly hoping to get a little sponsorship from visitors here at Shelsley Walsh to help us on our way.”

The next Breakfast Club, hosted by the Midland Automobile Club, takes place on Sunday 7th August and anybody wishing to display their car in the paddock should register and obtain a vehicle pass by visiting the MAC website at www.shelsey-walsh.co.uk.

The first “Black Plate Wednesday” was held on 22nd June, and was a roaring success. The tables looked lovely, laid with cloths, bone china, flowers and cake stands holding an amazing assortment of goodies. We were slightly overwhelmed with the demand, and success, but I hope the cracks didn’t show on the surface! We have learned some useful things and the next one will run even more smoothly, with two sittings of more tables. Trefor and Pam are raiding the second hand shops for more bone china!

Unfortunately, the next event advertised, which was the social evening on 6th July, had to be cancelled due to low demand. This was a great shame as we had an excellent magician lined up to entertain us at the tables, and then put on a stage show after. Perhaps the timing was poor with people planning holidays, and we could re-arrange him for another date if members would like to see him perform.

The next event is another “Black Plate Wednesday”, on 27th July, with entries already building up. The form this time gives you the facility to book a sitting, and with whom you would like to share your table. You can still book without a classic car, but obviously you will not be parked as part of the display in the paddock.

Members’ day entries are also coming in well (12th August) but there is still space to bring your own car to drive the hill, enter your cherished vehicle for our Members’ car display, book food and music for the evening, or do all three.

Reg Phillips’s Peugeot Built in the early 90s by Peugeot sport technicians for famous Hill Climber Reg Phillips, from a brand new shell imported from France. Originally a series 1 converted to a series 2 some years later. Built for the up to 1400cc mod prod class and campaigned at Shelsley, Prescott and Loton. Bought by previous owner and converted to Peugeot 1600 16v and fitting a Sadev Sequential box. Used by myself and previous owner recording many class wins still holding the class record at the La Vie en Bleu meeting set in 2010 and recording times at Shelsley Walsh in the low 32s.

Shell: Fully lightened, strengthened and seam welded converted to retain coil over rear suspension Full RAC log booked weld in cage and seat mounts.

Suspension: One piece billet kit car front hubs with Bilstein front coil over struts roller top mounts, specially made A frame rose jointed lower arms, fully adjustable Spax coil overs on rear retaining original rear beam modified to take coil overs and remove torsion bars.

Brakes: Willwood four pots on front using solid discs, motor bike rear discs and callipers on rear, braided hoses throughout with specially made adjustable pedal box. (Big brakes not needed in Hillclimbing just big balls!)

Gearbox: Sadev six speed sequential gear box fitted brand new three years ago but hasn't seen much action. Race clutch and hydraulic clutch geared to achieve 90mph bottom S and Finish Line at Shelsley Walsh. Specially-made shafts never broke once.

Engine: Built by Comp Sport (Ken Brown of the famous Skip Brown family sadly no longer with us). Approx 180 bhp with the potential for a lot more, Jenvey throttle bodies, Kit Car trumpets and modified Air box, Omex engine Management, solid engine mounts, four branch manifold, single box exhaust system 205 Rad and light weight fan.

Wheels: Proper light weight Compomotive split rims 13" on front with Peugeot Sport five spoke 13" on rear fronts wider than rear.

Corsa electric power steering professionally fitted and adjustable, shift light gear position indicator, specially made carbon fibre dash pod, fibre glass doors, bonnet and tail-gate.

Brand new motorsport tinted Perspex windows just fitted, plumbed in fire extin-guisher, 5 ltr fuel tank fitted in front with electric pump, dry cell battery with cut off, full professional wiring loom, centre switch console, RAC log booked and ready to go.

I have been involved with this car for fifteen years owning myself for the last three years where it has been overhauled and used only a couple of times hence the reason for a very reluctant sale and in the right hands it is capable of a lot more.
