It is a very busy time of year right now. The office is on overdrive with competition events, social events and of course Classic Nostalgia.

We now have a new Social team in place, led by Gill Dayson. Great to see so many people volunteering to get involved and lots of new ideas for the members to be involved with. I hope you will all embrace the hard work this team are putting into creating a social calendar.

One of the social events that recently took place was the Williams Tour which sold out within three hours of advertising. If you missed out first time round, don't worry we are going again on 16th June. It is a fascinating tour and a real treat to see the workshops where they are restoring the old F1 cars.

We had a slightly unusual event here on 21st May, Matthew Hill cycled up Shelsley Walsh seventy-five times starting at 4.30am and finishing at 9pm. This is the equivalent to cycling up Everest. And it was all in aid of the charity Aniridia raising ÂŁ4,000 so far.

Worcester Motor Festival The MAC exhibited at The Worcester Motor Festival on 14th May to promote the hill climb and the MAC. We had three cars on display, Simon Fidoe’s Empire (Simon very kindly forfeited an entry to Loton Park to attend), Briony Serrell had her Lotus on display alongside Bruce Atkinson’s Alfa. We managed to distribute nearly 2,000 flyers on what was a very busy day.

A huge thank you to everyone who came and helped spend a few hours promoting the MAC and Shelsley and to Simon, Briony and Bruce.

Jimmy McRae to attend Classic Nostalgia Jimmy McRae and Ian Grindrod will be reunited with their Prodrive Rothmans Metro 6R4 at Classic Nostalgia on 16th and 17th July.

The five-time British Rally Champion and his codriver will drive the 6R4 for the first time in thirty years when they come to Classic Nostalgia.

Prodrive are currently preparing the car for use during the weekend.

The last time Jimmy drove the 6R4 at a motorsport venue was on the 1986 RAC Rally.

This will be a very special moment in rallying history!

This car was also used on our stand at Race Retro in February this year.

Huge thanks to Prodrive for agreeing to prepare and bring the car.

MAC Sports and Classics – News and Events

DIARY DATES FOR 2016 Spain – 17th to 25th May 2016 Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to last minute problems with the ferry vessel itself.

Coast to Coast Tour – 8th/9th June 2016 This event will start near St. Bees, Cumbria, on the morning of Wednesday 8th June with breakfast refreshments. Overnight accommodation has been reserved in Reath, Yorkshire for Wednesday 8th June and in Robin Hood’s Bay for Thursday 9th June. Dinner, bed and breakfast at both hotels. It will not be a tulip route event, but suggested route directions and places of interest will be given at the start. There are currently no more places available.

Western Loire and the Loire valley – 7th to 13th September 2016 The next visit to France from 7th to 13th September 2016 has again proved exceptionally popular and is currently full. 25th September 2016 – Photo Finish The start of this event will take place at the Wine Room at Halfpenny Green Vineyard from 9am for breakfast bap/coffee/tea and finish at the Shugborough Hall Estate, Stafford with tea and cake. Shugborough being the home of famous photographer Patrick Lichfield.

The First Shelsley Competitor – Part 2

Following the first part of this article in the last MAC News, the office has put me in touch with one of our members with the same unusual surname, David Hawnt. Contact with David revealed he is the great, great nephew of Montague Hawnt, Shelsley’s first competitor.

David was able to confirm my suspicions that Montague was indeed the British importer for Motobloc, trading as Montague Hawnt & Co from depots at 5658 Dudley Street, Birmingham and 140-146 Clerkenwell Road, London.

In the Hawnt family possessions are some excellent photographs including the attached shot of the unfortunate Nance Hawnt, clearly in the same car that was involved in the fatal road accident and thus the car that Nance Hawnt competed at Shelsley. The body design, position of the bulb horn and chassis details confirm this. The photograph is signed “Yours Nance” and dated June 1905, only two months before that first Shelsley meeting.

We do not have a photograph of Montague himself in this car but the attached family album photo shows him in a production model Motobloc.

Before his involvement with Motobloc, Montague Hawnt & Co was also listed as being the manufacturer of the “British Ideal” car, a rather curious naming as it was actually of Belgian origin with a 1665 cc, 6.5 hp vee-twin and chain drive.

David Hawnt, as a descendant of this first Shelsley competitor, was invited to be first up the hill at the Member’s Centenary track day on 12th August 2005, in his Porsche 911. The registration number of the car, O 48, is another family heirloom bought by his father in 1929 and kept ever since.

Driving School Report

Relief as yet another glorious morning awaited at Shelsley for the second hillclimb school of 2016.

The participants were as keen as always, some of them having come up the night before, such was the length of their journey. A few familiar faces were present as we had both existing competitors, and some of what have now become regular participants at the school, it does after all represent great value as a means of practicing with the added benefit of constructive criticism of your racing lines.

The variety of vehicles was as great as ever, ranging from the graceful 1920 Napier which was exploited for all of its 6.2 litres, to the extremely youthful (2016) limited edition Cosworth powered Morgan AR Plus 4.

As instructors, we found the standards of driving to be as high as we have come to expect, with further improvement evident throughout the day.

An unfortunate series of mechanical maladies curtailed the exploits of several participants, but to the benefit of those that endured who got more track time, until the untimely rain shower just before the end of the batch.

Congratulations go to Stuart Gilbert who was the outstanding driver of the day in his particularly lively MGB V8, and also to Richard McMurty who impressed as the best novice hillclimber and Mark Hubbard who improved most over the course of the day.

Stuart will have to wait until after the last driving school of 2016 to see if he has scored highly enough to win the opportunity to drive a works Radical thanks to our school sponsors.

Competition Secretary’s Report

Two down and thirteen more to go! Well that’s the quick summary of the season that got off to a start on Saturday 30th April with our opening hill climb event “Speed into Spring”. Once again, we opened with rounds from the Midland Hill Climb championships and the weather was kind but not brilliant. Our new paramedic operators were not tested but looked very smart in their new fireproof overalls. Let’s hope that they have a quiet season. FTD went to Nic Mann in his Mannic Beattie Sports Libre with a time of 27.02 seconds, just 3/100ths of a second faster than the Empire Wraith driven by Ed Hollier in Class J2. We also entertained the Porsche Club of Great Britain with their National Hill Climb championship. Paul Howells took top honours in his 911 RSR. The Bugatti Owners Club also brought along their Newbarn Class B Championship which was won by John Stevens in his Renault Sport Clio 182.

After good reports from spectators about our new car parking team, we are now going a step further by giving priority parking to all spectators that bring their classic car to any of our events. An area in the front row is now reserved for these cars which we think will add to the ambience of the venue and create an excellent display with all the cars in one place.

The new barriers on the finish straight were not tested (thank goodness) but worked well and we are all getting used to this new look. The paddock shed numbering system was also well received by competitors and definitely improved the unloading and ‘setting up’ on Friday and Saturday morning.

On Saturday 21st May we ran our first sprint of the year. Normally this date is reserved for a MIRA sprint but we tried something new and moved to Curborough on their Figure-of-eight course to fit in with Caterham Academy who brought along fifty-three cars. In fact it was a little too successful and we were unable to give all the entrants a second practice run. Next year we will reduce the entry list to no more than seventy and will book the Sunday for a double-header. This was also the first round of the MAC’s brand new Sunrise Sprint Championship. There are twelve registered entries for the championship and leader after one round is Steve Brown (on four points) with Richard Hollingsworth, Gordon Hick and John Palmer in joint second with three points each. Next round is a double-header at Anglesey and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top.

So now we look forward to welcoming our first hosting of the year of the British Hill Climb Championship with all the top runners and riders. Weather, as always, is key and we expect it to be dry but not too hot which should make for some fast times up the hill. There will be a report on this in the next MAC News.

Another change that will be on display this weekend is the new trophy cabinet in the restaurant. On display are some of the winners’ trophies from this time last year together with some 2016 trophies from the Clee Hill Trial which took place at the beginning of the year. The cabinet has been hand made for the club in oak and is a permanent fixture with lighting that sets off the silverware beautifully. The intention is to change the display for every meeting and we have some interesting artefacts from our archive (which goes all the way back to the origins of the club in 1901) that we will be using in the future.

Williams F1 Heritage Collection Tour

Sixty members of the Midland Automobile Club headed off to the Williams F1 Team for a tour of their amazing F1 heritage collection and also a peak behind the scenes and see the workshop where the cars are restored.

On arrival, everyone met up at the conference centre for coffee and biscuits before being welcomed by one of the Williams Teamâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s longest serving members, ex-team manager and now Heritage Manager, Dickie Stanford.

This was a real honour to be taken round by someone so knowledgeable about all the cars and to also tell us what he was doing in the workshop as they restore the cars to full working order.

The Williams Heritage Collection is the largest collection of fully working F1 cars. Everyone got to have a good look at the cars being restored before being taken through the history of the Williams F1 Team as we toured round the collection. During which time we were given a fascinating insight by someone who was there for a lot of the time. We all got the opportunity to chat with Dickie and hear about his experiences as well as those of the team, learn about active suspension, the F-Duct and also how to set the clutch to leave the grid when the lights go green!

Sunrise Sprint Championship – Curborough

The Midland Automobile Club staged the first of its Sunrise Sprint Championship events at Curborough Sprint Circuit, near Lichfield, in Staffordshire.

The meeting was also a round of the Service Hydraulics Championship, together with special classes for Austin Healey cars in the Healeysport Championship and over fifty cars of the Caterham Academy.

Despite poor weather predictions, conditions turned out well and the pace was set by Stuart Bickley in his Yamaha R1powered Jedi single seater, with a Best Time of the Day at 53.61 seconds for the tight and twisting ‘figure-of-eight’ course layout.

Class winners were Mike Walters in a Ford Fiesta ST, Chris Chance in a Lotus Exige, John Palmer in a Lotus 7, Steve Brown in a Westfield Megabusa and Richard Hollingsworth in a DJ Firehawk.

Class winner, Chris Chance, of Worcester, said: “This has been an excellent event and my Lotus Exige ran perfectly, the course layout provides a real test of handling and braking and it is good to see such a wide variety of cars taking part.”

The Healysport Championship saw class wins for David Abram in his Austin Healey Sebring Sprite and Paul Baker in his Austin Healey 3000.

The large entry in the Caterham Academy classes saw a Green Class win for Ian Johnson, with Pete Walters in second and Steven Tozer in third place.

In the White Class Ben Gillias took the honours in front of Jay McCormack and Anthony Taylor.

MAC event organiser, Robin Webb, commented: “This is the first time we have seen so many Caterham cars for some years and getting to know the course was a challenge for some drivers resulting in several spins, which was embarrassing for them but great fun for spectators, however, many cars still put in very respectable times.

“It is always a pleasure to see the classic Austin Healey cars in action and they too seemed to enjoy themselves as did drivers of a diverse range of cars in all the other classes.”

MAC Classic

The sports and classics section of the Midland Automobile club staged its biennial MAC Classic event for vintage, classic and modern sports cars, with proceeds going towards the restoration and conservation of Shelsley Walsh.

Nearly 200 cars took part, starting from four different locations at Ludlow, Cheltenham, Gaydon and Shelsley Walsh itself, before covering around 100 miles following a ‘tulip’ style road book, finally converging at Shelsley Walsh, with the opportunity to then drive up the iconic hill.

A festival atmosphere awaited the crews in the courtyard on their return with hot food and live music provided by Tenbury Town Band.

Each couple received a commemorative tour plate for their car, together with a photograph of the car on the hill, and guided tours of the Shelsley restoration project including the working water mill were available.

MAC office staff member Rachel Lovett started from the Chase Hotel at Cheltenham, navigating for her boyfriend Ewen Sergison, in his 1968 Mini Marcos kit car. Rachel, said: “Ewen has owned this car for twenty-six years and is a real motorsport fan, so I really had to keep his ‘competitive nature’ in check as we set off with around forty-five other cars through the beautiful Cotswolds.

“The car was great fun but extremely loud inside so we had to use radio headsets to communicate and I was pleased that we only went wrong once, but we really did drive through some amazing countryside thanks to the route.

“The drive up the hill when we got back was a little traumatic for me personally as I have only walked up the hill since having a bad accident at top ess while competing in a racing car last year, but Ewen absolutely loved the track and I was glad to feel that I had actually been up in a car again, albeit only as passenger.”

Local man and ‘Dibnah’ stalwart Martyn Herridge set off from the start at Ludlow Food Centre in his 1978 Triumph Stag, with wife Veronica in the navigator’s seat and then headed south through the Shropshire countryside visiting the Clun and Bishops Castle areas before briefly heading over the Welsh border.

Martyn, commented: “What a fantastic event, very well organised with a varied and testing route and great fun to take part in, the car ran faultlessly and Veronica didn’t make a single wrong turn which was absolutely spot on!

“We covered exactly ninety-six miles taking in Knighton before heading back through the lanes towards Shelsley where the car did stutter a little due to a fuel issue when driving up the hill, but full credit must go to the organisers for putting on a simply wonderful event.”

Husband and wife team Jim and Susan Weston chose Shelsley Walsh as a local start venue in their 2004 MG TF 160 and praised the simplicity and accuracy of the road book instructions, which showed both detailed mileages between checkpoints and overall distance to go.

Jim said: “This was a brilliant event and very well organised indeed, we headed West from Shelsley and never went wrong thanks to some expert navigating from Susan. The route was diverse with obstacles like horses and even a long convoy of vintage tractors, on a rally of their own, simply adding to the fun of taking part and driving along twisting narrow lanes through such beautiful countryside.

“The views at Hay Bluff, near Hay-on-Wye were spectacular and not for the feint hearted with huge drops on the side of the narrow road ensuring that drivers kept their concentration high and their speed low.

“Besides the excellent road book those very kind and thoughtful organisers even gave each of us a £1 coin for the toll bridge over the River Wye and we personally had an added bonus by meeting up with fellow participants, my daughter Cathryn and her husband David, in their Porsche, for a break at Woodseaves Garden Centre.

“On returning to Shelsley we duly took our turn at driving the hill but I was somewhat dismayed to see the souvenir photograph of our car at bottom ess with the timing tower in the background clearly reading two minutes and fifty-six seconds... surely I wasn’t that slow?... so a little light-hearted ‘Photoshop’ work to around say ‘twenty-five seconds’ may be in order before framing!

“All in all an absolutely splendid day for all and full congratulations to MAC.” Bridgnorth driver Cathy Warner, with husband Richard navigating in their 1975 MGB GT Jubilee, chose the Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, in Warwickshire, as their starting point and were joined by forty others including Cathy’s sister Maggie Blankstone in her MGB RV8 with navigator Melodie Nightingale.

Richard, commented: “The Gaydon setting was wonderful with a striking Austin Healey on show in the restaurant foyer to greet us, and the breakfast itself was excellent, with a wide choice of menu items all perfectly cooked.

“We set off along the Fosse Way heading towards Daventry and stopped to look at the amazing Vulcan bomber aircraft at Wellesbourne, before travelling on through beautiful countryside passing an isolated windmill and crossing many quaint canal and railway bridges.

“Being seasoned tour veterans we never took a wrong turning especially thanks to the well written tulip road book which was really clear and concise, but we did laugh at one point at seeing a Triumph TR coming the other way with the driver frantically gesturing to us to turn around, I wonder where he ended up!

“Credit must be given to the route planners and event organisers for putting on such a great day, as the reception back at Shelsley Walsh was also very good with lovely food and impressive live music provided by the youngsters of Tenbury Town Band.”

Tony Harrison of the Sports & Classics Section, added: “A great deal of time, effort and planning goes into this event and thanks should go to the team of people who plot the routes and the day’s itinerary and hospitality, providing drivers with a leisurely trip along quiet country roads that they would never normally find as well as being a truly social occasion in itself.

“It is especially rewarding to receive such great feedback from just about all of the 200 drivers who thoroughly enjoyed themselves by taking part and this event has firmly established itself as a one of the real favourites in the varied calendar of MAC events.”

Speed into Spring Report

EMPIRE STRIKES BACK AT SHELSLEY WALSH Empire racing cars took the honours at the first competitive event of the season held at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb at the weekend.

Organised by the Midland Automobile Club and entitled ‘Speed into Spring’ the weather was anything but spring-like, with cold winds and showers creating a damp and slippery track which curtailed many competitive runs for drivers in the Midland Hill Climb Championship.

This played into the hands of the Empire racing team, whose light and nimble cars managed to trounce much more powerful machinery, taking top slots in both run-offs sessions for the quickest cars in the TTC Group Top Ten Challenge.

MAC committee member Simon Fidoe had a fantastic weekend, winning ‘Man of the Meeting’ and the first run-off in his Empire Wraith, whilst Ed Hollier won the second in his Empire Evo. On top of this Empire cars took the top three places from an entry of nearly twenty-five cars in the 1100 Racing Car Class, in the hands of Simon Fidoe, Chris Aspinall and Tom Poole, respectively.

Empire constructor Bill Chaplain, commented: “The cars have really shone in these very challenging conditions, against such powerful competition, and I am delighted with the efforts of all my drivers, especially young Tom Poole in a brand new car that was only completed and unveiled last week.”

Entertaining the spectators was Nic Mann of Newbury, in his spectacular Manic Beattie machine, which is powered by a 1700cc Ford BDT engine and uses a helicopter gas turbine starter system, a former Sports Libre record holder at Shelsley Walsh, climbing the hill in a time of 27.02 seconds.

Reign Midland champion Mike Turpin continued the defence of his title with another win and other class wins came for veteran driver Ken Williamson in his Lotus Elise, Roy Standley in his Mitsubishi Evo 5RS, Phil Ludbrook in a Honda S2000GT, Alan Warburton in a Caterham 7, Mike West in a Westfield, Tim Dennis in a Mini Cooper, Colin Satchell in a Peugeot 205, Ash Mason in a Westfield and Kim Johnson in a Mallock.

The racing car classes saw wins for Neville Rollason in a Formula Ford Jamun, Andrew Henson in a Pilbeam MP62/82, Alan Goodwin in an Aldon, and Stuart Ridge in a Pilbeam.

Paul Howells in a 911 RSR won the class for competitors in the Porsche Club of Great Britain Hill Climb Championship and John Stevens won the Newbarn B-Licence holders class in his Renault Clio 182.

The Paul Matty Sports Cars Lotus Championship classes were won by Richard Swindall in a Lotus Elan sports car and Stephen Palmer in a Lotus 23B racing car.

BLACK PLATE WEDNESDAY – 22nd June Traditional afternoon tea and classic cars Shelsley Walsh is opening its gates on 22nd June 2016 to a brand new social event for those who want to display their classic cars and, at the same time, enjoy an English afternoon cream tea in the open air surroundings of the Courtyard.

This event is focusing on anybody who has a ‘black plate’ classic car (i.e. pre 1975). Cars with black number plates will be specially parked in the Shelsley Paddock to form a display that all can enjoy. If you do not own a ‘black plate’ car, you are still welcome to attend and will be parked up elsewhere.

Tea will be served using traditional English china cups and plates, and will include freshly made finger sandwiches, handmade cakes and scones with homemade jam and clotted cream.

Members receive a discounted price; however non members will also be welcomed to our beautiful venue. The price is £12 for MAC members and £15 for Non MAC members (per person), with the option to add a glass of Prosecco for £3.

This is a midweek afternoon from 3pm to 6pm. If successful on this date then we will hold another similar event later in the year (possibly August).

In the event of inclement weather (as per the forecast two days prior to the event), the organisers will contact all parties and offer the new revised date. This is definitely best enjoyed as sunny afternoon in the English countryside.

Reg Phillips’s Peugeot Built in the early 90s by Peugeot sport technicians for famous Hill Climber Reg Phillips, from a brand new shell imported from France. Originally a series 1 converted to a series 2 some years later. Built for the up to 1400cc mod prod class and campaigned at Shelsley, Prescott and Loton. Bought by previous owner and converted to Peugeot 1600 16v and fitting a Sadev Sequential box. Used by myself and previous owner recording many class wins still holding the class record at the La Vie en Bleu meeting set in 2010 and recording times at Shelsley Walsh in the low 32s.

Shell: Fully lightened, strengthened and seam welded converted to retain coil over rear suspension Full RAC log booked weld in cage and seat mounts.

Suspension: One piece billet kit car front hubs with Bilstein front coil over struts roller top mounts, specially made A frame rose jointed lower arms, fully adjustable Spax coil overs on rear retaining original rear beam modified to take coil overs and remove torsion bars.

Brakes: Willwood four pots on front using solid discs, motor bike rear discs and callipers on rear, braided hoses throughout with specially made adjustable pedal box. (Big brakes not needed in Hillclimbing just big balls!)

Gearbox: Sadev six speed sequential gear box fitted brand new three years ago but hasn't seen much action. Race clutch and hydraulic clutch geared to achieve 90mph bottom S and Finish Line at Shelsley Walsh. Specially-made shafts never broke once.

Engine: Built by Comp Sport (Ken Brown of the famous Skip Brown family sadly no longer with us). Approx 180 bhp with the potential for a lot more, Jenvey throttle bodies, Kit Car trumpets and modified Air box, Omex engine Management, solid engine mounts, four branch manifold, single box exhaust system 205 Rad and light weight fan.

Wheels: Proper light weight Compomotive split rims 13" on front with Peugeot Sport five spoke 13" on rear fronts wider than rear.

Corsa electric power steering professionally fitted and adjustable, shift light gear position indicator, specially made carbon fibre dash pod, fibre glass doors, bonnet and tail-gate.

Brand new motorsport tinted Perspex windows just fitted, plumbed in fire extin-guisher, 5 ltr fuel tank fitted in front with electric pump, dry cell battery with cut off, full professional wiring loom, centre switch console, RAC log booked and ready to go.

I have been involved with this car for fifteen years owning myself for the last three years where it has been overhauled and used only a couple of times hence the reason for a very reluctant sale and in the right hands it is capable of a lot more.
