This weekend will see the Sporting Trial take place on the bank above the car park, plans for this are almost sorted.

Alongside this event will be the first Breakfast Club of the year under the new system. Today it is hammering down with rain, should be interesting on Sunday!

The MAC News welcomes two new advertisers, Equi-TrekTregaron and SPA Design. Both these companies’ offerings are a welcome addition and I hope that you contact them should you require anything. SPA Design are offering MAC Members a deal too!

The big announcement for us is Classic Nostalgia, this year’s event has been two years in the planning to pay tribute to Group B rallying. We have a number of cars confirmed including the Hannu Mikkola Audi Quattro that came to Shelsley in 1986. This event is going to be something very special. We will of course keep you up to date with the cars and attractions as they are firmed up. We can confirm that both days will have aerobatic displays.

We have introduced three new social dates for Members.

On a Wednesday evening, you can come down to Shelsley and have a bite to eat and chat with friends, more details on this are further on in this issue.

Members at Breakfast Club A reminder to all members, entry to the breakfast club is free with your 2016 Member’s pass.

Race Retro The MAC attended Race Retro over the weekend 26-28th February where club members were in action promoting the club and its activities.

Classic Nostalgia was the main focus for promotion and the announcement that we will be paying tribute to Group B Rallying. On display, we have the ex Jimmy McRae Prodrive Metro 6R4 which we hope will be with us for that weekend.

Other cars on display were Grant Cratchley’s Brabham, Ewan Cameron’s Farley Special and Mike Gallery’s Mini. Thank you to everyone for loaning cars.

Thank you must also go to Global Display who provide our exhibition stand, which this year benefited from new graphics.

Work Party 9th April The MAC's annual Work Party Day is a chance for the club members to come along and help prepare Shelsley Walsh for the start of the new season.

If you can spare a few hours to come along it would be very much appreciated and a great chance to meet up with fellow members. Assemble in the paddock on Saturday 9th April at 9.00am for 9.30am start and finish around 4.00pm with lunch provided.

Annual General Meeting The Annual General Meeting of The Midland Automobile Club (Est 1901) will be held at the Bromsgrove Golf Club, Old Stratford Road, Bromsgrove, B60 1LD, on 8th April 2016 at 7.30pm.

Obituary: Mike MacDowell

Mike MacDowell died on 19th January after a full life and with a huge involvement with motor cars, he was 83 and had been a member of the Midland Automobile Club since 1973.

His motor sport competition began in 1954 with a Lotus 6 in the 1172 Championship and he followed this with a Lotus 9 the next year during which his driving caught the eyes of Charles and John Cooper who gave him a drive in the “works” Cooper T39 Bobtail sports car. With this he and Ivor Bueb won their class in the Tourist Trophy race at Dundrod and in 1957 Mike moved to single seaters and drove in the Cooper works team at the French GP which was held at Rouen les Essarts, a very tricky road circuit. His team mate, Jack Brabham, damaged his car and Mike was required to hand over his car to the Australian.

So, Mike’s only Grand Prix drive was over in an afternoon and he then drove for John Coombs the Surrey motor trader for a few seasons. This included a period when Mike was Jaguar Competition Manager at which time the Lightweight E-type was being developed and this fitted in well as Coombs of Guildford were Jaguar distributors.

Mike came back to hill climbing in the early 1970s initially with a Jaguar E-type, but he then competed with a BT36X Brabham fitted with the splendid Australian 5 litre Repco V8 and with this he was unstoppable and won the British Hill Climb Championships in both 1973 and 1974. During these two seasons he set nine hill records, including a 28.21 at Shelsley Walsh and won the Top-10 run off seventeen times.

Before retiring from hill climbing Mike competed with a Ralt, latterly Coogar single seater and a Chevron B19 sports car fitted with a 3 litre BMW engine which was appropriate as by this time Mike had become Managing Director of Coombs who had relinquished the Jaguar franchise for BMW. Mike was a keen and respected British Racing Drivers Club member and a great supporter of their Benevolent Fund. This was recognised by a large turnout of BRDC members, six Hill Climb Champions and many others at his Thanksgiving Service on a bright and sunny Gloucestershire afternoon.

David Render Honoured

I first met David Render in the early 1960s when we were both competing in sporting trials. I was just nineteen-years-old. Our paths have crossed many times since then. David has been a MAC member for over forty years and has hill climbed and sprinted a wonderful variety of cars, including the occasional Formula 1 Lotus lent by his friend, Colin Chapman, but when he was nineteen he was in Normandy commanding a troop of Sherman tanks a week after D-Day and after much fierce fighting carried on across Europe until the end of the war, though not in the same tank! Coincidently, he and my future father-inlaw attended the same briefing before an attack near Caen in July 1944. When reading my newspaper one morning recently, my eye was caught by a photo of a dozen WW2 veterans receiving the Legion d' Honneur at the French embassy in London and the soldier on the extreme right was Captain David Render. I am sure that the whole club would wish to congratulate David on receiving such a well deserved award from a still grateful French nation.

Christine Perks and Adrian Deane Marriage Christine and I were married on Friday 5th February and we would like to share this news with MAC. We met at Shelsley when Christine was signing on at events and performing accountancy duties, I joined the Scrutineering team in 2010 and trained at Shelsley under Mike Beresford, Dave Boyles and Alan Terry and have recently been Chief Scrutineer at events and an environmental official.

The MAC wishes Chritstine and Adrian a happy future together.

Geneva Motor Show Car Launch A few weeks ago, we were asked if a promotional film for a new model could be produced for one of the manufacturers, which would be launched at the Geneva Motor Show.

The film was played out on press night at Geneva and the car in question was the Ford Fiesta ST200. The film can be found online or via our website.

Social Event Organiser We are looking for a Social Event Organiser, someone who might like to get more involved with the club on a voluntary basis.

It is a role that can be done as a group, similar to the Classic Section. This is a very rewarding role with assistance provided by the office, helping to shape the Membership’s social calendar for the year ahead.

We already have a couple of ideas which are being looked after and we will announce when firmed up, plus the new Members’ Social Evening.

MAC Sports and Classics – News and Events

DIARY DATES FOR 2016

THE MAC CLASSIC Sunday – 24th April 2016 This will be another of our biennial fund raising events using a number of start venues around the Midlands. Open to all comers, we will be inviting other Clubs and individual classic car owners to enter, so do tell anyone you know with a qualifying car about it . As well as the Tulip note guided route to follow there will be a chance to experience the famous Hill, plus music, food and drink, Mill tours and so on. An entry form is available in this issue.

Spain – 17th-25th May 2016 This will feature the ferry to Santander and return plus hotel accommodation locally in Northern Spain. Entries are now closed.

Coast to Coast Tour – 8th/9th June 2016 This event will start near St. Bees, Cumbria, on the morning of Wednesday 8th June with breakfast refreshments. Overnight accommodation has been reserved in Reath, Yorkshire for Wednesday 8th June and in Robin Hood’s Bay for Thursday 9th June. Dinner, bed and breakfast at both hotels. It will not be a tulip route event, but suggested route directions and places of interest will be given at the start. Western Loire and the Loire Valley – 7th-13th September 2016 The next visit to France from 7th to 13th September 2016 has again proved exceptionally popular and is currently full. Obituary: Roger Willoughby

Roger died on 17th January at the age of eighty after a short illness. A GP by profession, Roger spent most of his life pursuing motorsport of one sort or another. He started at a somewhat tender age racing motorcycles, firstly solos then sidecars.

His first successful foray into hillclimbing was in a supercharged 1100 cc Brabham. This was followed by the ex-Roy Lane Techcraft Buick and then Rover V-8 engined Marches acquired from Nick Williamson.

Latterly he brought out his supercharged Cooper JAP, which he had owned for many years.

He also built and ran classic scrambles bikes for his son, Tom. For twenty-five years, he was involved in the running of Wiscombe Park hillclimb which he carried out with great enthusiasm and efficiency.

Away from motor racing he was a very much loved and respected doctor, a great family man and a true sportsman. He was an excellent shot and only gave up shooting a year ago.

A fount of amusing stories usually told with a pint in his hand, his larger-than-life presence will be sorely missed.

Our deepest sympathies are extended to his wife, Pat, and to James and Tom.

Competitions Secretary’s Report

On Friday 29th January, entries opened for our 2016 season and by 29th February we had over 350 already signed up, so it looks like it might be another busy season. The Hill Climb events follow the dates and structure of 2015 with no significant changes.

The Sprint calendar has one less MIRA, One more Curborough and we have added Blyton back to the calendar. Anglesey remains with two single events over the weekend.

From an administrative point of view there are some changes. The Regulations are now split into a ‘per event’ basis which should make them a little more competitor-friendly and are downloadable from the website. The website also illustrates the invitees under each event heading making it easier for non-MAC entrants to quickly find out whether they are invited (or not).

Other changes include extra Recticel barriers at bottom S and the new fencing on the finishing straight. In the paddock, each shelter will have its own sequential and permanent numbering system with each competitor receiving notification of their paddock shelter number and a plan to locate it. This should make arrival and unloading much easier.

On 5th February the MSA approved and registered our brand new SUNRISE SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP which, we think, is a first for the MAC. The name is a nod to our history and reflects the MAC’s origins when we ran some events at Edge Hill, Warwickshire, better known as “Sun Rising Hill”, a twisting course over 1000 yards. Open to all MAC members and members of the WMAMC, the six MAC Sprint events will all be qualifying rounds. It’s early days but over the next few years we would hope to build it into something of which the club will be proud and the annual champion will be even prouder!

Another small change is that Press/Photographers will now sign on at the Paddock Office and they will be required to wear MAC press bibs if they want to go trackside. This is all part of the improvements to our trackside security and will include all Officials having to wear permanent passes with new 2016 lanyards.

We have started selling the dedications on the remaining paddock shelters. Eight have now pre-sold and some of the plaques have already been delivered. Once they are gone; they are gone! There are currently no plans to ‘life’ them so if you are thinking about dedicating a shelter then please contact the office sooner rather than later.

Clee Hills Trial Report

I can scarcely believe that MAC has promoted twenty-one Clee Hills Trial since it took the event over in 1994, how quickly time passes when you are enjoying yourself! With no trial last year, because of a calendar issue, the organising team dusted themselves off and got to work. They were in for a few surprises.

When we came to inspect many of the sections, some were rather overgrown, whilst others had very deep ruts resulting from over-use by heavy 4x4s. The heavy rains cannot have helped. One section had literally disappeared! We found it hidden behind a pile of timber the size of two pairs of semi-detached houses! We found an alternative not far away in the Prior Holt woods at the southern end of the Long Mynd. The team set to work, and put together a challenging event.

Adrian Tucker-Peake was in charge this time, and the start and finish were at Affcot Lodge Hotel just north of Craven Arms, which had, incidentally been the start of the trial in 1992 when VW Owners Club were running the event, although it was then called The Travellers Rest. The regular trials scrutineers were ably assisted by Phil Nuthall and Brian Sanders.

An entry of over seventy is good going these days, doubtless helped by Richard Houlgate’s lobbying of the VSCC brigade who turned out with some mouth watering machines. Diversity is one of the delights of Classic Trials, and we had it in spades: From a much modified Ford Model-T (with Model-A engine and gearbox, but still without front-wheel brakes!), three ModelA’s to a Mk 1 Escort and a Ka! We had two real 1920s Bentleys, one with a 4-litre engine, and three Austin 7s. Then there were several Morgan’s, one of which had only three wheels and half a dozen Beetles and a further four VW Buggies. There were two Reliants (Scimitar SS1s), four Dellows, some pre-war MGs and thirteen kit cars from Marlin, Liege, Dutton Melos, Buckler and the like. Class 8, for specials, was the largest class with fifteen entries. Riley, Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall and VW were all entered. The most popular single model was…..Suzuki X90 (seven of them!) a car voted as one of the twelve worse cars in history – oh dear, I have one!

Clee Hills Trial Report (continued)

Sixteen sections had been laid out in South Shropshire, along an eighty mile circular route.

Again, variety was the word – with slippery forest tracks, to stony old roads in narrow deep gulleys, to tracks going over mountains giving stunning views, to the notorious Hungerford Steps and the test of driving up a winch cable railway track, not to mention the run along the very top of the Long Mynd!

The weather was kind, mild and dry mostly. The slippery conditions meant some delays at a couple of sections. At the end of a long day, it transpired that the old cars and new drivers had done well. Best performance went to young Aaron Haizelden (Reliant SS1), tied on penalties with his father Dave (VW GTi) and Sam Holmes (1300cc VW Beetle), and David Golightly’s Model T Ford – all of them on just five penalties – pity the Model T didn’t win overall – now that would have been something to talk about! James Shallcross’s 205 was just one point behind and the high tec modern stuff was sixth overall on seven penalties, that being Dean Partington’s amazing DP Wasp special which was the only car to climb “Flounders Folley”. On Hill Top, no one got passed the 11 marker, except Dean who calmly drove out of the top! Mel Ellis (Beetle) well deserved her class win against much more experienced drivers to finish tenth overall. Bill Bennett (1933 MG J2) won his class as expected, but the 4.5L Bentley was 2nd in that pre-war class. Chris Webb drove his Austin 7 superbly to win the clubman’s class, just in front of Tim Barrington, his first ever classic trial, and his first event in the reworked ex-David Bache 1600cc Dellow. Dave Ball and I finished in the middle of the eleven in class 5 in my X-90! I must try harder!
