SEMPRE IN MOVIMENTO ALWAYS ON THE MOVE Il successo di Midac è fatto dalle persone. Crediamo infatti da sempre che siano le persone a fare la differenza. Come nella tradizione del Made in Italy più vero, pensiamo che professionalità, creatività, entusiasmo, voglia di crescere, siano il motore dell’economia. Anche della nostra economia. Ecco perché per noi è importante motivare, far crescere talenti, premiare. Solo così la crescita diventa condivisa da tutti e un bene per tutti, un processo al quale ognuno è chiamato a partecipare. Così in questo numero vi proponiamo l’intervista al nuovo responsabile della nostra sede di Cremona, Stefano Castelli, quale esempio di dedizione, ambizione, unita ad umiltà, doti di cui ci fidiamo per crescere e crescere bene. Testimonianza di quanto siamo riusciti a raggiungere fino ad oggi è il premio consegnato da Toyota a Midac per l’efficienza raggiunta con l’introduzione della Lean Production, la produzione snella, che abbiamo impiantato in Midac seguendo proprio l’esempio della nota casa automobilistica giapponese. Spazio verrà dato al successo che abbiamo riscosso al CeMAT di Hannover, fiera internazionale Intralogistica, dove Midac SpA ha presentato le innovazioni dei prodotti a trazione, che stanno guadagnando terreno in quanto a performance e in termini di risparmio economico. E focalizzandoci sul risparmio, non si poteva non parlare dell’inaugurazione del nostro tetto fotovoltaico, che oltre a creare energia, sta riducendo di molto la quota di emissione di CO2 in atmosfera, rappresentando anche un valido esempio di quanto ognuno di noi può fare per il bene del territorio in cui è collocato. E per il territorio abbiamo lavorato anche all’organizzazione della raccolta di fondi per gli alluvionati veronesi e vicentini dello scorso autunno, organizzando una partita amichevole tra Chievo Verona e Vicenza Calcio e ci siamo legati ad una realtà come quella del Chievo che ha dimostrato ancora una volta come impegno, dedizione e costanza siano doti indispensabili per brillare anche con le grandi. Questo ci ha resi orgogliosi di esserne sponsor. Insomma, noi di Midac siamo sempre in movimento, nella ricerca tecnologica, nel miglioramento delle prestazioni, nell’attenzione al nostro territorio; perché rendere possibile il movimento è il nostro mestiere e possiamo farlo al meglio, solamente se siamo noi i primi a non fermarci mai.

It is only in this way that growth is shared by everybody and is an asset for everyone, a process that each individual is called to participate in. Therefore, in this issue, we wish to offer you an interview with the Head of our plant in Cremona, Mr. Stefano Castelli, as being an example of dedication, ambition, unity and modesty, qualities that we trust in to grow and to grow well. Confirmation of what we have succeeded in achieving to date is the prize given by Toyota to Midac for the level of efficiency it has reached through the introduction of Lean Production, which we have planted in Midac, following on from the example provided by the well-known, Japanese car company. Space will be set aside for the success that we enjoyed at CeMAT in Hannover, the international, intra-logistics trade fair, where Midac SpA presented the innovations in its motive power products, which are gaining ground in performance and in terms of savings in money, time and energy. And, focusing on saving, we could not but have mentioned the inauguration of our photovoltaic roof, which besides creating energy, also greatly reduces the emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, thus, representing a valid example of what we can all do for the good of the territory where we are. With reference to the territory, we have also worked in the organisation of the collection of funds for the Veronesi and Vicentini flood victims last autumn, through a friendly, football match played between Chievo Verona and Vicenza Calcio and we are linked to a team like Chievo, which has once again shown how commitment, dedication and constancy are indispensible qualities to possess to stand out among the great. This has made us proud to be their sponsors. In short, we at Midac are always in movement, in technologic research, the improvement of performances, in paying attention to our territory; because making movement possible is our job and we can only do it if we are the ones who never stop.

LA NUOVA SFIDA DELL’AVVIAMENTO PASSA PER CREMONA THE NEW AUTOMOTIVE CHALLENGE PASSES THROUGH CREMONA

Come sta andando il nuovo stabilimento produttivo di Cremona a tre anni dalla sua acquisizione? La sua crescita e la sua riorganizzazione sono importantissime per i progetti futuri di Midac. Ad illustrarci gli avanzamenti Stefano Castelli, oggi responsabile dello stabilimento.

How is the new, production plant in Cremona doing three years after its acquisition? Its growth and reorganisation are extremely important for Midac’s future projects. Stefano Castelli, who is, today, the person in charge of the plant, will give us some explanations as to its progress.

È Stefano Castelli, a dirigere oggi come nuovo responsabile lo stabilimento di produzione di batterie avviamento di Cremona, acquisito da Midac nel primo trimestre del 2008. Una responsabilità che ha a che fare con molti aspetti: dall’acquisto di nuove tecnologie performanti, al coordinamento di un gruppo da motivare e dirigere verso lo stesso obiettivo, dalla scelta di strategie di mercato, alle politiche attuate per tenere alta la performance. Aspetti da curare nei minimi dettagli, vista l’intenzione di Midac di effettuare, per il prossimo triennio, investimenti importanti che porteranno la sede di Cremona a divenire il polo di riferimento per la produzione di Midac nel campo delle batterie avviamento. A raccontarci tutto questo, colui che vive tutti i giorni ogni passaggio in prima linea.

Stefano Castelli is, today, the new head of the automotive batteries production plant in Cremona, which was bought by Midac during the first quarter of 2008. A responsibility that has a lot to do with many aspects: running from the purchase of new performing technology, to the coordination of a group to motivate and lead towards the same objective, from the choice of the market strategies to adopt, to the policies implemented to keep performance high. Aspects that have to be dealt with down to the smallest details, in view of Midac’s intention to make, during the next, three-year period, important investments that will lead to Cremona becoming the point of reference for Midac production in the field of automotive batteries. To tell us all about it, the man who lives every step, every day on the front line.

Da quanto tempo lavora in Midac e quali esperienze ha fatto all’interno della società? Midac rappresenta per me la prima esperienza professionale; ho iniziato di fatto appena terminata l’università, proprio seguendo i test sulle batterie nel laboratorio elettrico di Soave sotto l’esperta guida dell’allora direttore tecnico, il dottor Ezio Ferro. Questa parentesi, se da un lato mi ha fornito l’opportunità di sviluppare competenze specifiche sul prodotto e sul processo di produzione delle batterie, mi ha condotto dall’altro alla consapevolezza di quanto gli aspetti prettamente tecnici non fossero totalmente consoni alle mie attitudini ed aspirazioni. Lo sviluppo dell’azienda, già da allora estremamente dinamica, mi ha dato poi la possibilità di occuparmi di programmazione della produzione e contemporaneamente di avvicinarmi al mondo della contabilità industriale, dapprima attraverso i primi approcci alle logiche di budgeting e costing di prodotto, successivamente sperimentando lo sviluppo di un vero e proprio sistema di controllo di gestione. Ed è stato proprio il desiderio di approfondire quest’ultimo aspetto che mi ha spinto a cercare esperienze altrove; ho infatti lavorato come controller per una multinazionale veneta, MOTIVE

How long have you worked for Midac and what experience have you accrued in the company? Midac was my, first, professional experience; I started work just after I finished university, where I had written my degree thesis on batteries in the electrical laboratories in Soave, under the expert guide of the then, technical manager, dottor Ezio Ferro. This parenthesis if, on one hand, provided me with the possibility of developing specific competences concerning the product and the battery, production process, led me, on the other hand, to the feeling of awareness of how much the purely and typically technical aspects were not totally suitable to with my talents and aspirations. The company’s development, which was, even then, exceptionally dynamic, gave me the possibility of dealing with a production programme and, at the same time, to get closer to the world of industrial accounting, firstly through the initial approaches to the logic of product budgeting and costing, thereafter, experimenting the development of a true, management control system. And it was, precisely, the desire to expand this, last aspect that made me 6

successivamente per un paio d’anni in uno stabilimento metalmeccanico del vicentino, poi per altri due in una consociata estera. Devo ammettere che questa parentesi è stata più frutto di impazienza che di reale limitatezza di opportunità: ho avuto di fatto modo di constatare come nel frattempo Midac avesse sviluppato, sulle basi che solo in misura marginale avevo contribuito a porre, un sistema di controllo, forse non molto strutturato ma certamente efficace, che oggi rappresenta un adeguato strumento in grado di guidare le scelte strategiche della Direzione. Sono rientrato quindi in Midac nel 2008 (forse dovrei ammettere di non averla mai lasciata) per seguire specificatamente l’implementazione della Lean Manufacturing nello stabilimento di Soave; tale scelta, se da un lato ha rappresentato per me la possibilità di rientro in Italia, dall’altro mi ha consentito di approfondire tematiche decisamente innovative nell’ambito della gestione della produzione.

seek experiences elsewhere; I did, in fact, work as the controller of a Veneta multinational company and, after, for two years, in a metal and mechanical plant, then, for a further, two years, with a foreign subsidiary company. I have to admit that this parenthesis was more the fruit of impatience than a real limit to opportunity: I had the possibility to ascertain how, in the meantime, Midac had developed, on the basis that only in a marginal sense, had contributed to setting up a control system, perhaps not a very structured one, but it was, undoubtedly, efficient, and which, today, represents a suitable instrument that is capable of guiding the Management’s strategic choices. I, then, returned to Midac in 2008 (perhaps I should admit that I never really left it) to specifically pursue the implementation of Lean Manufacturing in the Soave plant; said choice if, on one hand, granted me the possibility of returning to Italy, on the other, allowed me to decidedly expand innovative themes within the scope of production management.

Lei oggi è il responsabile del nuovo stabilimento di Cremona: come sta andando l’esperienza e su quali politiche state puntando? L’esperienza è decisamente stimolante in considerazione del fatto che le ridotte dimensioni garantiscono un costante monitoraggio delle prestazioni e consentono di percepire in breve tempo i risultati delle azioni di miglioramento. I nuovi assunti sono tendenzialmente giovani con poca o nessuna esperienza; questa scelta strategica consente di puntare su una crescita interna secondo le logiche, la mentalità e lo spirito che da sempre caratterizza l’azienda nel suo complesso: attenzione al dettaglio, lotta allo spreco per mantenere sempre alto il livello di performance, di qualità del prodotto e di servizio al cliente. You are, today, in charge of the Cremona plant: how is the experience going and what policies are you aiming at? The experience is undoubtedly stimulating in consideration of the fact that the reduced dimensions guarantee constant monitoring of the performances and permit one to perceive, in a short space of time, the results of improvement action undertaken. The newly appointed personnel are generally young, with little or no experience; this strategic choice grants the possibility of aiming at internal growth according to the logic, mentality and spirit that has always characterised the company, as a whole: attention to detail, the battle against waste in order to keep the performance level, product quality and client service high. 8

Cosa significa portare questo “spirito” Midac all’interno di una nuova realtà? Quali difficoltà ha incontrato? Significa trasmettere approccio e mentalità inseriti in una progettualità a medio termine; tutte le azioni e le iniziative tendono alla crescita in termini di volumi, ma parallelamente anche in termini di salute e sicurezza del posto di lavoro; ogni intervento ha una sua collocazione in un business plan di medio periodo e si sviluppa attraverso investimenti mirati e ponderati. Tale criterio di gestione ha significato un importante cambio di prospettiva per un gruppo di persone abituato a confrontarsi con obiettivi di breve durata. Per quanto mi riguarda devo ammettere che accoglienza e collaborazione, dopo un primo periodo di normale diffidenza che accompagna qualsiasi novità, sono state davvero ottime a qualunque livello e mi hanno permesso un rapido inserimento nel nuovo ambiente lavorativo.

What does it mean to bring the Midac “spirit” into the new plant? What difficulties have you had? It means transmitting approach and mentality introduced into a medium-term planning feasibility; all the actions and initiatives tend towards growth in terms of volume, but parallel, also, in terms of health and job security; every intervention has its own place in a mediumterm business plan and is developed through specific and pondered investments. Said management criterion has meant a significant change in prospective for a group of individuals who were used to dealing with short-duration objectives. I must admit that the welcome and collaboration, after an initial period of normal diffidence, which accompanies almost all innovations, was really excellent at all levels and allowed me to quickly enter into my new, working environment. What are the results you have obtained to date? The hardest job was undoubtedly undertaken by my predecessor, who had to deal with the greatest resistance. Maurizio Visentin pursued the entire, re-opening phase, providing for the substantial organisational and structural rearrangement: the most obsolete and least efficient plant was no longer used and demolished and, in part, replaced, maintaining, however, the already very coherent layout unaltered. During the subsequent phase, consolidation of the changes brought and the production activities’ performance increase were concentrated on, with a special eye turned towards the support and coordination functions.

Quali sono i risultati ottenuti fino ad oggi? Il lavoro più duro è toccato sicuramente a chi mi ha preceduto, che ha dovuto confrontarsi con le resistenze maggiori. Maurizio Visentin ha seguito tutta la fase iniziale della riapertura, provvedendo ad un sostanziale riassestamento organizzativo e strutturale: sono stati dismessi, smantellati e in parte sostituiti gli impianti più obsoleti e meno efficienti,

What are your objectives for the future? The main focus remains that of growth in terms of production capacity and professionalism. With reference to the next, three-year period, some important investments have been foreseen that will lead Cremona to becoming the point of reference for Midac production in the field of automotive batteries. On the other hand, the plant, due to its very construction nature, lends itself very easily to plant and structural expansion; the real challenge will be in the field of logistics: we must be capable of planning, ever more coherently, a balance between the production in Soave and Cremona, in such a way as to optimise the resources and exploit their potential to the maximum.

What can still be improved? The list of things to do is really long, especially within the scope of “lean thinking”: it means taking, as point of reference, a system that supplies detailed process analysis instruments and methods (not only merely production ones), and which will guide development by means of a course that aims at achieving excellence. It is still a long road which the Soave plant has to proceed along on a daily basis and which, during the second half of the year, will be pursued in Cremona, firstly, through specific and circumscribed intervention, later, by means of wider divulgation of the continuous improvement mentality. The final objective remains that of maintaining competitiveness in a country that is certainly not advantageous from the point of view of the costs connected to the labour force; a Management choice and a challenge that goes almost against the flow, when our main competitors are leaving Italy to transfer production to countries where the cost of labour is cheap.

Quali sono gli obiettivi per il futuro? Il focus principale resta quello della crescita in termini di capacità produttiva e professionalità. Per il prossimo triennio sono previsti investimenti importanti che porteranno la sede di Cremona a divenire il polo di riferimento per la produzione di Midac nel campo delle batterie avviamento. D’altronde lo stabilimento per sua natura costruttiva si presta facilmente ad espansioni impiantistiche e strutturali; la vera sfida si giocherà sul campo logistico: dovremo essere in grado di pianificare in modo sempre più coerente il bilanciamento fra le produzioni di Soave e Cremona in modo da ottimizzare le risorse e sfruttarne al meglio le potenzialità. Cosa c’è ancora da migliorare? La lista delle cose da fare è davvero lunga, specialmente nell’ambito del “pensiero snello”: si tratterà di prendere come riferimento un sistema che fornisca strumenti e metodologie di analisi dettagliata del processo (non solo squisitamente produttivo), e che guidi lo sviluppo attraverso un percorso che punti all’eccellenza. È un sentiero lungo che fa progredire quotidianamente lo stabilimento di Soave e che nella seconda parte dell’anno si inizierà a percorrere a Cremona, dapprima con interventi mirati e circoscritti, successivamente attraverso una più ampia diffusione della mentalità di miglioramento continuo. L’obiettivo ultimo resta quello di mantenere la MOTIVE

What are, instead, the strong points? Without a doubt, willingness and flexibility; thanks, especially, to the current, reduced dimensions, the plant is, so to say, one, big family, which is distinguished by its attachment to work, which is perceived by everybody as being a fundamental value. 9

What have the trends in the automotive batteries market been during this, first six months of 2011? After 2010, which saw us having to deal with a decidedly slow period in the automotives sector, which we were able to leave behind, but not without sacrifices having been made by everybody, this initial part of the new year is decidedly flattering: we are working with rhythmic continuity balanced by planning on the typical seasonal nature of the market to which Midac is mainly aimed.

Quali sono invece i punti di forza? Senza dubbio disponibilità e flessibilità; grazie soprattutto alle attuali ridotte dimensioni, lo stabilimento è per così dire una grande famiglia, che si contraddistingue per un forte attaccamento al lavoro, da tutti percepito come un valore fondamentale.

What are the personal expectations of your professional career? This is my first, direct experience in managing such a numerous group of people and I cannot but consider it to be extremely instructive, not only from a professional point of view; I believe it to be an essential passage to complete my growth experience inside the corporate world.

Com’è l’andamento del mercato delle batterie avviamento in questo primo semestre 2011? Dopo un 2010 che ci ha visto fronteggiare periodi di decisa frenata del settore automotive, dai quali si è usciti non senza sacrifici da parte di tutti, questa prima parte del nuovo anno si presenta con prospettive decisamente più lusinghiere: stiamo lavorando con continuità a ritmi cadenzati da una pianificazione bilanciata sulla stagionalità tipica del mercato a cui Midac principalmente si rivolge.

What is the secret of running a production plant? I would be really presumptuous if I were to reply thoroughly after only one year’s “experience”; I am, on a daily basis, seeking suggestions and ideas to deal with more or less complex situations, by means of the experience of colleagues who have been used, for some time, to tackling problems that are relatively new to me.

Quali sono le personali aspettative per la sua carriera professionale? Si tratta per me della prima esperienza diretta nella gestione di un gruppo numeroso di persone e non posso che considerarla estremamente formativa, non solamente dal punto di vista professionale; lo ritengo un passaggio essenziale per la completezza del percorso di crescita all’interno del mondo aziendale.

Qual è il segreto per dirigere uno stabilimento produttivo? Sarebbe davvero presuntuoso se rispondessi compiutamente dopo un solo anno di “pratica”; sono alla quotidiana ricerca di suggerimenti e spunti per affrontare situazioni più o meno complesse, attraverso l’esperienza di colleghi che sono abituati da tempo a misurarsi con problematiche per me relativamente nuove. Come riesce a far squadra? Cercando di dare a ciascuno, indipendentemente dal ruolo che ricopre nell’organizzazione, l’opportunità di contribuire al risultato finale in maniera determinante: ho avuto modo di sperimentare come spesso la via migliore per risolvere situazioni complesse si tracci con l’apporto di molteplici suggerimenti, provenienti da competenze e funzioni diversificate che a volte sembrano sovvertire le basi tradizionali della gerarchia aziendale.

How do you make the team work together? By trying to give each one, independently of the job he has in the organisation, the opportunity of contributing to the final result in a decisive way: I have had the possibility of experimenting how very often the best way to resolve difficult situations can be through the contribution of many suggestions, coming from various competences and functions which, from time to time, seem to overturn the traditional base of the company’s hierarchy.

Quali sono i valori professionali in cui crede? La multinazionale giapponese Toyota ha conferito a Midac SpA il riconoscimento ufficiale per la miglior performance nella qualità fra tutti i fornitori certificati nell’anno 2010.

The Japanese multinational Toyota has granted Midac SpA official acknowledgement of the best performance in quality achieved among all its certified suppliers during 2010.

Era il 2007 quando Midac SpA decide di intraprendere una nuova sfida per la sua crescita. Non più solo qualità e innovazione di prodotto, ma qualità e innovazione di processo. La stretta collaborazione iniziata tra l’azienda di Soave e Toyota si è consolidata proprio in quell’anno, quando Midac ha dato inizio alla trasformazione snella, adottando i principi della Lean Production proposti dal modello Toyota per migliorare l’efficienza dei processi, abbattere gli sprechi e aumentare la competitività. Questo modello ha permesso anche a Midac di aumentare la propria competitività sul mercato europeo. “Per un’azienda manifatturiera - spiega Filippo Girardi - inserita in questo scenario competitivo, l’innovazione di prodotto, non era più sufficiente, serviva un’imponente azione di innovazione pervasiva nel cuore delle operations. Un cambiamento radicale che solo il modello Toyota poteva realizzare”. Il risultato di questo percorso è oggi tangibile, poiché il miglior prodotto installato sui propri carrelli elevatori prodotti negli stabilimenti francesi e italiani è proprio targato Midac. La società automobilistica giapponese Toyota Material Handling Europe (divisione europea di TICO, che appartiene al gruppo Toyota) ha infatti consegnato all’azienda veronese il premio per la miglior performance nella qualità, fra tutti i fornitori certificati nel 2010.

It was back in 2007, when Midac SpA decided to undertake a new challenge in its growth. Not just more quality and product innovation, but quality and process innovation. The close collaboration that began between the company from Soave and Toyota was consolidated precisely in that year, when Midac began its transformation towards being leaner, adopting the Lean Production principles that had been proposed by the Toyota model to improve process efficiency, cut down on waste and increase competitiveness. This model also permitted Midac to increase its, own productivity in the European market. “For a manufacturing company - explained Filippo Girardi - in this competitive environment, product innovation was no longer sufficient, what was needed was fundamental innovation action widespread in the heart of the operations. The kind of radical change that only the Toyota model could achieve”. The results produced by this course are, today, tangible, since Toyota confirmed that the best product installed in its, own cars bears the name, Midac. The Japanese car company, in fact, granted the Veronese company the prize for the best performance achieved in quality, among all its certified suppliers during 2010. Through this acknowledgement, Toyota has confirmed the contribution that Midac offers in one of the sectors par excellence in our country. From 2005, the company in Soave has been the official supplier of batteries for all Toyota TMH - Toyota Material Handling’s European works, which offers clients a complete range of counterbalanced and warehouse forklift trucks to move goods, together with a number of service solutions. “The prize obtained from Toyota has, for all of us, great, symbolic value - commented Girardi - inasmuch as it underlined how all our personnel, working closely, have succeeded in dealing successfully with the change”. The acknowledgement was given to Midac’s Operations Manager, Mr. Stefano Bovo, and its Motive Power Division Sales Manager, Mr. Giovanni

Throughout the years, Midac has, in fact, achieved, thanks to the lean method, constant improvement, both in terms of the drastic cut in lead time, as well as an improvement in quality. Today, Midac is capable of serving its clients in full compliance with delivery times and excellent quality, as shown by the sought after acknowledgement obtained from the lean company par excellence: Toyota. Furthermore, the continuous improvement (kaizen) brought by leanness has allowed Midac to become, in a short space of time, a first-class company in the worldwide panorama of battery producers. In 2010, Midac began to implement lean offices so that it can even make its office activities leaner.

LA TRAZIONE IN BELLA MOSTRA AD HANNOVER I prodotti trazione presentati al CeMat di Hannover suscitano interesse e richiamano numerose presenze allo stand di Midac, dove i prodotti brillano per qualità tecnica ed estetica. Midac non poteva mancare ad Hannover in questa edizione 2011 di CeMAT, la fiera intralogistica leader a livello mondiale, dove quest’anno sono state presentate circa un migliaio di innovazioni di settore, e che si è conclusa con un notevole successo di espositori e di pubblico provenienti da tutto il mondo. Tra questi, anche Midac SpA, che ha presentato tra il 2 e il 6 maggio le proprie innovazioni, dando spazio ai nuovi prodotti trazione, in abbinamento ai propri caricabatterie, apprezzati dai numerosi clienti e visitatori sia per le interessanti soluzioni tecnologiche che per il nuovo accattivante design. MOTIVE POWER ON SHOW IN HANNOVER The motive power products shown at CeMat in Hannover provoked interest and invited considerable numbers to visit the Midac stand, where the products stand out in efficiency and for their technical and aesthetic quality. Midac could not but be in Hannover during this, 2011 edition of CeMAT, the most important intra-logistics trade fair in the world, where, this year, almost one thousand new innovations were introduced to the sector and which concluded with the considerable success both for exhibitors and public from throughout the world. Midac SpA was also there and, between 2nd and 6th May, presented its innovations, providing space for new motive power products, combined with its own battery chargers, which were appreciated by the numerous clients and visitors, both due to the interesting technical solutions as well as for their new appealing design. The International participation, which strongly characterized the event, confirmed the importance of CeMAT as an important platform, at an international level, for intra-logistics, it also concerned Midac SpA, which welcomed a number of foreign visitors. Among the worldwide innovations for the intra-logistics sector, Midac presented a wide range of solutions, such as: â&#x20AC;˘ A new range of traditional MIDATRON battery chargers, with a general rationalization of the range accompanied by aesthetic-functional restyling, but especially, due to the addition of a Pulse charging profile range and data acquisition through USB for the top of the range models â&#x20AC;˘ The new MIDATRON HF battery chargers; as replacement of the preceding MIDACHARGE line, with medium to high models equipped with the CAN-BUS system, new design and the integration of more rational and intuitive commands MOTIVE

The crisis appears to have been overcome, in view of the fact that there were 25% more participants compared to 2008 and decidedly higher quality both in relation to products and services. ENERGIA PULITA DAL TETTO DI MIDAC CLEAN ENERGY FROM MIDAC’S ROOF Una nuova scelta messa in atto con successo da Midac: l’installazione e il funzionamento del già annunciato impianto fotovoltaico a 6.000 moduli sul tetto dello stabilimento di Soave, inaugurato lo scorso aprile e funzionante già da dicembre 2010.

A new choice, successfully set up by Midac: the installation and operations of the previously announced photovoltaic system operating at 6,000 modules, located on the roof of the Soave plant, was inaugurated last April and already working since December 2010.

Per un’azienda legata al territorio e alla tutela ambientale, non poteva mancare l’attenzione anche alle energie rinnovabili, per creare meno immissioni di CO2 in atmosfera, per utilizzare fonti rinnovabili risparmiando quelle fossile, per dare un segnale al proprio territorio, mostrando che è possibile far meglio e farlo in maniera intelligente, investendo per essere poi ripagati in termini di costi e immagine.

For a company that is linked to the territory and environmental protection, our attention could not have neglected the benefits of renewable energy, to create fewer emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere, to use renewable sources, thus, saving on fossil ones, to give a sign to the territory, showing that it is possible to do better and more intelligently, investing to then be paid back in terms of costs and image.

L’inaugurazione del nuovo tetto fotovoltaico di Midac è avvenuta giovedì 14 aprile con una vera e propria visita guidata sul tetto dello stabilimento di Soave, che ha permesso a tutti gli ospiti di visionare in prima persona l’impianto di circa 10mila mq e l’mponenza dei 6.000 moduli fotovoltaici installati nel 2010 e funzionanti già dallo scorso dicembre. Alla cerimonia erano presenti Filippo Girardi, Amministratore Delegato e Presidente dell’azienda, Lino Gambaretto, Sindaco del Comune di Soave, Andrea Pernigo, Vice Presidente di Confindustria Verona e Presidente del Gruppo Giovani Industriali e Simone Mariga, Direttore Tecnico di ESPE. Midac si è impegnata a promuovere l’utilizzo intelligente delle risorse del nostro pianeta, per questo ha fatto realizzare uno dei più grandi impianti per la produzione di energia elettrica della regione Veneto. Si tratta di un sistema imponente, visibile passando all’altezza di Soave sull’autostrada A4, che consentirà di evitare l’emissione in atmosfera di circa 945 tonnellate di CO2 all’anno, grazie ad una struttura composta appunto da oltre 6.000 moduli fotovoltaici. L’impianto, per un investimento complessivo di circa 5 milioni di euro, copre una superficie totale di circa 10.500 mq e ha una potenza nominale di picco pari a 1432,60 kWp.

The inauguration of Midac’s new photovoltaic roof took place on 14th April with a true guided visit to the roof of the Soave plant, which permitted all the guests to personally see the system that measures almost ten thousand square metres and had the impressive amount of six thousand photovoltaic modules installed in 2010 and has already been working since last December. Filippo Girardi, Managing Director and Chairman of the Company, Lino Gambaretto, Mayor of the Soave Municipal Council, Andrea Pernigo, Deputy Chairman of the Confindustria Verona and Chairman of the Gruppo Giovani Industriali and Simone Mariga, Technical Manager of ESPE were present at the ceremony. Midac undertook the commitment to promote the intelligent use of our planet’s resources, for this reason it created one of the biggest systems for the production of electrical Energy in the Veneto Region. It is an impressive system, which can be seen passing Soave on the A4 motorway, which has allowed us to avoid emitting approximately 945 tons of CO2 a year into the atmosphere, thanks to a specific structure made up precisely of more than 6,000 photovoltaic modules. The system, for a total investment of approximately five million Euro, covers a total surface area of approximately 10,500 square metres and has a nominal power at peak equivalent to 1432.60 kWp.

Un’ulteriore finalità ambientale dell’investimento è stata data dalla bonifica totale del rivestimento in eternit dell’edificio, in modo da liberare l’azienda dal rischio amianto. Un progetto importante, dunque, che vede Midac impegnata su più fronti: dal risparmio energetico alla promozione di fonti rinnovabili per un futuro sostenibile, dalla prevenzione e protezione ambientale alla tutela della salute.

A further, environmental investment aim was given by the total renewal of the covering of the building in Eternit cladding, in such a way as to release the company from the risk posed by asbestos. An important project, therefore, which has seen Midac committed on several fronts: running from energy saving to the promotion of renewable sources for a more sustainable future, and from environmental prevention and protection to health protection.

This has been a good season for Chievo Verona, the team sponsored by Midac which reached a position in the middle of the Serie A (Italian First Division) football classification, thus, obtaining a good position compared to the one in the last championship.

Una stagione combattuta con tenacia fino all’ultimo e finita con un buon posizionamento a metà classifica per un Chievo Verona in ascesa, che ha saputo farsi valere su numerosi campi anche blasonati, conquistando l’undicesima posizione con 46 punti, assieme a Parma e Catania. E così, a campionato finito, possiamo dire che la squadra ha dimostrato di aver tutte le carte in regola non solo per rimanere in serie A, ma anche per tentare di alzare il tiro.

A season that was tenaciously fought to the last, and ended up in a healthy position being obtained in the middle of the classification for a Chievo Verona on the up and up, a team which was able to assert itself on a number of pitches, even the more aristocratic ones, conquering the eleventh place with forty-six points, together with Parma and Catania. And so, at the end of the championship, we can fairly say that Pioli’s (the coach) team proved that it was more than qualified to remain in serie A, but was also capable of aiming even higher.

Oltre che per la classe dei professionisti, i giocatori del Chievo hanno brillato anche nella stagione 2010-2011 per la correttezza dimostrata in campo e per il rispetto del gioco e dell’avversario, mostrando ancora una volta di credere nell’importanza dei valori del fair play. E proprio questi sono i valori che Midac sposò e condivise ad inizio campionato: non solo qualità di gioco, ma correttezza, rispetto, nonché voglia di farcela con le proprie forze per diventare, da piccola realtà locale a squadra militante a pieno titolo tra le grandi storiche società nel campionato di massima serie. Midac’s sensitivity concerning the territory turned it into the promoter organising a friendly game between Vicenza Calcio and Chievo Verona, which provided concrete help to the four Veneto municipal areas that were worst hit by the flood on 1st November 2010. A Wednesday that started in icy conditions and ended in thick fog, did not stop the Vicenza and Chievo fans, who, came to see, in good numbers, in any case, the friendly match between the two, Veneto teams, at the G. Corsaro stadium in Montecchio Maggiore, in the Province of Vicenza, last 29th December, to gather funds for the Veneti that had been struck by the flood on 1st November 2010.

Un mercoledì di gelo prima e di fitta nebbia poi, non ha fatto desistere i tifosi di Vicenza e Chievo, che, allo stadio G. Corsaro di Montecchio Maggiore, in provincia di Vicenza, hanno assistito comunque numerosi allo scontro amichevole intercorso tra le due squadre venete che il 29 dicembre scorso si sono impegnate a scendere in campo per raccogliere fondi per i veneti colpiti dall’alluvione del 1° novembre 2010.

The Promoter of said initiative was Midac SpA, which explained, in the words of Filippo Girardi, the reasons for this important initiative that had been carried out for the Veneto municipal areas, in case of point: “The Veronese and Vicentino territories were those most damaged by the flood. Nevertheless, our co-citizens, friends, colleagues and relations did not surrender, even for a moment, to the disaster that the fury of the waters brought with it. This is why the match between Vicenza Calcio and Chievo Verona seemed to be the best way to represent a Veneto that fights back, which is close to and united towards those who find themselves in difficulty, because they have lost everything: their homes, their memories, the things they held dearest; or even their, own companies and now find themselves with all the difficulties of starting again from scratch”.

Promotore di tale iniziativa, Midac SpA, che ha spiegato con le parole di Filippo Girardi, le motivazioni di questa importante iniziativa realizzata per i comuni veneti in questione: “I territori del veronese e del vicentino sono stati tra i più danneggiati dall’alluvione. Eppure i nostri concittadini, i nostri amici, colleghi e parenti non si sono arresi neppure per un attimo al disastro che la furia delle acque ha portato con sé. Ecco perché questa partita tra il Vicenza Calcio e il Chievo Verona ci è sembrato il modo più bello per rappresentare un Veneto che lotta, che è vicino e solidale verso chi si trova in difficoltà, perché ha perso tutto: la propria casa, i propri ricordi, le cose più care; o la propria azienda, e ora si ritrova con tutta la difficoltà di ricominciare daccapo”. La partita è stata inoltre patrocinata dal Coni, da Confindustria Vicenza, da Confindustria Verona, dalla Regione Veneto, dai Comuni di Vicenza, Verona, Soave, Monteforte d’Alpone, Caldogno e Montecchio Maggiore. Vicenza e Verona, oltre che sul campo, sono state equamente rappresentante anche dagli enti che hanno sostenuto economicamente l’evento. Tre gli sponsor principali, appunto Midac, che ha un’anima metà berica e metà scaligera, visto che la sede operativa è a Soave mentre a Vicenza c’è quella legale e poi Banca Popolare Vicenza e Banca Popolare di Verona.

The match was also sponsored by the Coni (the Italian National Olympic Committee), Confindustria Vicenza, Confindustria Verona (the Confederation of Italian Industry), the Veneto Region and the municipal councils of Vicenza, Verona, Soave, Monteforte d’Alpone, Caldogno and Montecchio Maggiore. Vicenza and Verona, besides on the football pitch, were also equally represented by the authorities that had financially sustained the event. Comuni che maggiormente hanno subito i danni: Caldogno, Monteforte d’Alpone, Soave e Vicenza. L’incontro si è chiuso infatti con un’amichevole pareggio (1-1), ma a vincere in campo è stata appunto la solidarietà. La vendita dei biglietti ai circa 1200 spettatori ha portato ad un incasso di 15 mila euro che, aggiunti ai contributi dei due istituti di credito sponsor dell’evento, Banca Popolare di Vicenza e Banca Popolare di Verona, e alle donazioni versate sul conto corrente della Fondazione Arciso Mastrotto Onlus, ha permesso di raggiungere una somma totale vicina ai 45mila euro. Durante l’intervallo della partita, i rappresentanti degli istituti di credito e Giovanna Mastrotto, portavoce della Fondazione Arciso Mastrotto Onlus, hanno consegnato a ciascun sindaco o assessore dei Comuni coinvolti un maxi assegno di 11 mila 185 euro. Un gesto simbolico, che si è concretizzato poi con la ricezione da parte di ogni amministrazione comunale della propria somma. “Anche in quest’occasione sono stati tanti i veneti che hanno dimostrato una vicinanza speciale alle popolazioni colpite dall’acqua e dal fango dell’alluvione - ha commentato il presidente di Midac SpA, Filippo Girardi - Il loro sostegno, valorizzato da un evento che ha unito passione sportiva e solidarietà, tenacia e voglia di ripartire, simboleggia la forza della nostra Regione: una terra che ha vissuto momenti difficili e che sa cosa vuol dire avere qualcuno che, di fronte al bisogno, ti aiuta davvero. The match did, in fact, end with a friendly draw (1-1), but the true winner was, precisely, solidarity. The sale of the tickets to the almost 1,200 spectators brought in a collection of fifteen thousand Euro which, added to the contributions provided by the two banks sponsoring the event, the Banca Popolare di Vicenza and Banca Popolare di Verona, as well as the donations paid into the Fondazione Arciso Mastrotto Onlus current account, which enabled us to reach the total sum of forty-four thousand seven hundred and forty Euro. During the interval in the match, the representatives of the banks and Giovanna Mastrotto, spokeswoman of the Fondazione Arciso Mastrotto Onlus, gave each mayor or councillor representing the Municipalities involved a maxi cheque of Euro eleven thousand one hundred and eighty-five. Very shortly, a project to sustain emergency midwifery and neonatal services at the Tosamaganga Hospital in Tanzania will be completed. Midac has given its contribution to guarantee support for health and life in Africa.

Non è più un sogno ma sta diventando realtà la costruzione di una sala parto e l’adeguamento di una sala operatoria dell’ospedale di Tosamaganga in Tanzania. A proporre il progetto e a guidarlo l’organizzazione non governativa “Medici con l’Africa-Cuamm”. A contribuire all’avanzamento dei lavori, Midac SpA

It is no longer just a dream, but the construction of a labour suite and adaptation of an operating theatre is becoming a reality at the Tosamaganga Hospital in Tanzania. The non governmental “Medici con l’Africa-Cuamm” proposed the project and is guiding its organisation. Midac SpA is contributing to the work’s progress.

Nello specifico il progetto prevede il raggiungimento di obiettivi che vanno oltre la costruzione della sala parto e che intendono anche assicurare un servizio competente di aiuto. Infatti verrà dato un contributo per l’acquisto di attrezzature specifiche, in modo da garantire i servizi di emergenza ostetrica e neonatale; inoltre verrà assicurata la presenza di un chirurgo-ostetrico e l’acquisto costante di farmaci e materiali di consumo per l’ospedale.

In more detail, the project has aimed to achieve objectives that go beyond the construction of the labour suite; they also wish to ensure a complete help service. In fact, a contribution will be given to purchase specific equipment, in such as way as to guarantee emergency midwifery and neonatal services; furthermore, the presence of a surgeon will be ensured as well as the constant purchase of drugs and consumable materials for the hospital.

CHI SONO I MEDICI CON L’AFRICA CUAMM Medici con l’Africa Cuamm è la prima organizzazione non governativa (ong) in campo sanitario riconosciuta in Italia. Si spende per il rispetto del diritto umano fondamentale alla salute e per rendere l’accesso ai servizi sanitari disponibile a tutti, anche ai gruppi di popolazione che vivono nelle aree più isolate e marginali. Iringa Rural, stimate al 2008 in circa 9.500. Indirettamente verrà beneficiata anche la comunità dell’area di competenza dell’ospedale, in particolare per le attività di tutela della salute materna e infantile. Attualmente si tratta di 52.730 madri e di 10.474 bambini di età inferiore ad un anno che si trovano ad usufruire di strutture sovraffollate. Durante il periodo invernale sono stati eseguiti i sopralluoghi e Medici con l’Africa-Cuamm si è avvalsa di consulenza tecnica qualificata per poter monitorare i lavori e garantire il loro completamento al più alto livello di qualità possibile e sono state eseguite delle modifiche per poter migliorare lo spazio di lavoro in tutte le aree del reparto. A marzo ed aprile scorso non stati completati il tetto e l’intonaco delle pareti interne ed esterne e si sta procedendo all’installazioni degli infissi della struttura, il cui completamento è previsto per novembre-dicembre 2011.

There are, currently 52,730 mothers and 10,474 children aged less than a year, who find themselves having to use over-crowed structures. During the winter period, some inspections were carried out and Medici con l’Africa-Cuamm employed qualified technical advice to be able to monitor the works and guarantee their completion, in compliance with the highest standards of quality possible and some changes were made to improve the working area in the departments. The roof and the plastering of the internal and external walls were completed in March and April and the installation of fixtures in the structure is going ahead, and its completion has been foreseen for NovemberDecember 2011. WHO ARE THE DOCTORS WORKING WITH AFRICA CUAMM Medici con l’Africa Cuamm is the first, non governmental organisation (NGO) in the health care field acknowledged in Italy. Its aim is respect for the fundamental human right to health and to make access to health care services available to everybody, even to groups of people who liven in the most isolated and marginal areas of the world. It was established in 1950 with the purpose of training doctors to go to developing countries and under the name Cuamm (Collegio universitario aspiranti e medici missionari) (the University College for aspiring and medical missionaries), over the years, it has chosen to operate particularly in the Continent of Africa, under the name of, Medici con l’Africa (Doctors with Africa). LA CILIEGIA VERONESE È SEMPRE LA REGINA THE VERONESE CHERRY IS ALWAYS THE QUEEN OF CHERRIES Le ciliegie VERONESI sono un prodotto di pregio della terra italiana, conosciute in Europa per la loro genuinità e sempre più ricercate per la qualità.

The VERONESE cherries are a much sought after product from Italy, well-known throughout Europe for their natural flavour and quality.

È un territorio da scoprire quello delle colline dell’est veronese. Valli coltivate a vitigno, olivo e ciliegio che rifioriscono in primavera, rigate da piantagioni ridenti, che creano uno scenario di un verde luminoso che oramai attira una fetta di turismo significativa. Ed è così che nascono numerosi agriturismo e Bed & Breakfast incastonati in scenari davvero inediti per chi visita questi territori per la prima volta. Una di queste valli, ancora una perla grezza da scoprire, è la Val di Mezzane, una vallata non ancora toccata dall’espansione edilizia, incuneata tra la Val d’Illasi, i monti Lessini e la vallata di Marcellise, appunto nell’est del territorio veronese. In vallata oggi si coltiva soprattutto il vigneto e l’oliva, ma prima di tutto, negli anni Cinquanta, si iniziò la cultura della ciliegia, una volta dismessa la coltivazione della pera, introducendo così una cultura primaverile che colmasse un vuoto nella raccolta stagionale delle famiglie contadine. In questa stagione la ciliegia è al suo apice, è un frutto accattivante, saporito, dolce e ricercato, che viene esportato in Italia e all’estero, portando un po’ del sapore di questo territorio nel mondo. A parlarcene è l’assessore al Territorio e alle Attività produttive proprio del Comune di Mezzane di Sotto, Andrea Tadori, in carica dal 2009, coltivatore esso stesso di ciliegie.

The hills located in the East Veronese are a territory to be discovered. Valleys where vines, olive and cherries are cultivated and which blossom, once again, in Spring, lined by charming plantations, which create a luminous green landscape that attracts a share of tourism that is becoming more important and which has seen the creation of a number of farm holiday places and Bed & Breakfast accommodation, set in landscapes that are really quite original for those who visit the territory for the first time. One of these valleys, which is still a jewel awaiting to be discovered, is the Val di Mezzane, a valley that has not yet been touched by building expansion, wedged among the Val d’Illasi, Monti Lessini and the Vallata di Marcellise, right to the East of Veronese territory. Mainly grapes and olives are grown in the valley today, but before these, back in the 1950’s, cherry growing started, once the cultivation of pears had been discarded, thus, introducing a spring crop which filled a gap in the seasonal harvests of small farmer families. The cherry is at its peak during this season, it is a appealing, mouthwatering, sweet and much sought after fruit that is exported in both Italy and abroad, bringing a little taste of this territory out into the world. Andrea Tadori, right from Mezzane di Sotto, councillor for the Territory and Production Activities, in office since 2009 and a cherry grower, himself, spoke to us.

Assessore, come è organizzato oggi il mercato veronese delle ciliegie? Attualmente è stato istituito un Consorzio di Tutela delle Ciliegie delle Colline Veronesi che raggruppa i mercati più importanti di Verona: Montecchia di Crosara, Illasi, Negrar e San Pietro Incariano. Anche a Mezzane, fino a 20 anni fa, esisteva un mercato che raccoglieva il prodotto del territorio, ma oggi tutti i produttori si appoggiano invece a varie cooperative e alcuni, una minima parte, conferiscono il prodotto direttamente al commerciante. La cooperativa funge da punto di raccolta per la vendita sul mercato nazionale ed estero ed è il tramite con cui la ciliegia veronese arriva nel mondo.

Councillor, how is the Veronese, cherry market organised? A Protection Consortium for the Cherries from the Veronesi Hills has, currently, been established, which groups together the most important markets in Verona: Montecchia di Crosara, Illasi, Negrar and San Pietro Incariano. Even in Mezzane, up to twenty years ago, there was a market that gathered the territory’s product but, today, the producers support, instead, the various cooperatives and some, very few, provide the product to the retailer directly. The cooperative acts as a gathering point for the sale to the national and foreign markets and is the go between through which the Veronese cherry arrives in the world.

Quante ciliegie si producono a Mezzane? E quanti produttori si contano oggi? Attualmente vengono raccolti circa duemila quintali di ciliegie nella stagione che va dai primi di maggio a fine giugno. Si tratta di circa duecento produttori che, seguendo i tempi di maturazione delle varie qualità, lavorano per tutta la stagione primaverile. Mediamente vengono raccolti 80 kg di prodotto al giorno da ogni persona. Quali sono le qualità presenti in vallata? Storicamente vi sono due qualità: la regina di tutte, la Mora di Cazzano, e il Durone. Si tratta di due qualità molto pregiate, che però presentano notevoli difficoltà di cultura e che per questo sono molto delicate. La prima, pur essendo un prodotto molto prelibato e durevole, prestandosi per questo all’esportazione, è una qualità poco produttiva; si tratta infatti di piante che hanno bisogno di essere impollinate in un tempo molto rapido per poter produrre. La seconda qualità, pur essendo produttiva, subisce invece il fenomeno del cracking, ovvero la spaccatura della superficie in caso di eccessiva pioggia. Dagli anni Settanta si è cercato quindi anche, grazie a noti botanici tra cui cito Giorgio Bargioni, di incrociare queste tipologie autoctone con altre che superassero questi inconvenienti, onde ottenere più produttività e qualità. Il risultato è che oggi possiamo rintracciare circa una cinquantina di tipologie di ciliegie veronesi, che presentano caratteristiche simili e che derivano dalle originali. Quando è iniziata la produzione di ciliegie nella vallata? Alcuni registri testimoniano che nel 1891 la coltivazione più importante era quella dei bachi da seta e che ai primi del ‘900 il prodotto più commercializzato era la pera. Negli anni Trenta si hanno le prime tracce della coltivazione del ciliegio, anche se è soprattutto negli anni Cinquanta che viene per lo più abbandonata la coltivazione delle pera a favore della ciliegia, onde evitare un accavallamento della raccolta con la vendemmia e coprire la lacuna di raccolto primaverile.

Quanto è importante oggi la coltivazione del ciliegio? Devo dire che la cultura nelle nostre valli oggi è marginale, rispetto a quella vitivinicola. Nonostante questo, con le nostre qualità, rappresentiamo un mercato importante a livello nazionale ed esportiamo circa il 50% del nostro prodotto in paesi europei, come Germania e Inghilterra. Come promuovete il vostro prodotto? Essenzialmente con la Festa delle ciliegie di Mezzane, giunta quest’anno alla 45° edizione. Si tratta di una manifestazione di due giornate che si tiene ormai da sempre durante la seconda domenica di giugno, ma ci sono molte feste locali che si alternano nei paesi limitrofi. In questa occasione vengono esposte le migliori ciliegie di tutte le qualità e vengono premiate le migliori. La “Ciliegia d’Oro”, il nostro premio speciale, va da sempre alla Mora di Cazzano. Which are the cherry qualities present in the valley? Historically, there are two qualities: the Queen of them all, the Mora di Cazzano and the Durone. They are both two very highly prized qualities, which have considerable difficulties in their cultivation and, for this reason, are very delicate. The first, in spite of being a very exquisite and long-lasting product, which lends itself to being exported, is not of a very productive quality; the cherry is, in fact, a plant that needs to be pollinated very quickly to be able to produce. The second quality, in spite of being very productive, sustains, instead the cracking phenomenon, which implies that the surface breaks open when there is too much rain. From the 1970’s, it has, therefore, been tried, even thanks to wellknown botanists, amongst who I would like to mention, Giorgio Bargioni, to cross these native types with others that are capable of overcoming these problems, in such a way as to obtain more production and quality. The result, today, is that we can trace almost fifty types of Veronese cherries, which have similar characteristics and which have been derived from the original ones. When did cherry production start in the valley? Some registers confirm that, in 1891, the cultivation of silk worms was more important at the beginning of the twentieth century; this

In the 1930’s, there were the first traces of cherries even if, and especially in the 1950’s, the cultivation of pears was abandoned in favour of cherries, in such a way as to avoid the overlapping of the harvest with the grape harvest and to cover a gap in the spring harvest. How important is cherry cultivation today? I have to say that cultivation in our valleys, today, is marginal compared to the wine-growing one. In spite of this, with our qualities, we represent an important market at a national level and export almost 50% of our product to European countries, such as Germany and England. How do you promote your product? Essentially through the Mezzane Cherry Festivals, which has this year reached its 45th season. It is a show that is held over two days and which has always been held on the second Sunday of the month of June, but there are a number of festivals that alternate in the adjacent villages. On this occasion, the best cherries of all qualities are exhibited and the best are always awarded. The “Ciliegia d’Oro” (Golden Cherry), our special prize, always goes to the Mora di Cazzano. On this occasion, it is possible to buy cherries at a very reasonable price compared to those in the market and it is, in any case, a good occasion to stay together and share a little of our history and that of our territory with everybody, Veronesi and not, who love or are attracted to our land.
