JACK BARCLAY BENTLEY Written by Benjamin Dubois - Automotive Editor

l

Towards the end of last year, The Art of Luxury was invited to visit Jack Barclay Bentley, operated by H.R. Owen, Britain’s leading luxury motor dealer group. The reason for the visit was firstly to experience the new Continental GT, but also to observe the beautifully refurbished showroom which was completed earlier this year. The showroom is situated in Mayfair’s famous Berkeley Square and has managed to retain many of the features from the original 1953 showroom when the company first took up residence. One such feature is the original brass-handled showroom doors, which you can’t help but notice when you first walk in. The whole entry experience exudes a longstanding class that is impossible to replicate, much like the cars they showcase. After introductions and a welcome drink served at a remarkably beautiful central bar which is trimmed in luxurious Bentley leather, our car arrived. One thing always becomes apparent - no matter how many times you drive a car of such prestige, your heart will go into overdrive every time at the sheer excitement that is about to follow. This time was no exception.

Due to the drive being in central London, I never truly got to experience the versatility of the car, which was a shame as I was eager to really feel the almost unrivalled power a car of this size and weight offers. It was clear that the car was rearing to be let loose and with sport mode activated heads were turning. If you wish to hear the sheer power that is available, there are plenty of videos online showing just how rapid the Continental GT is when un-caged. All of this is made possible by the enhanced version of Bentley’s peerless 6.0-litre, W12 TSI engine that sets a new benchmark in performance. Designed, developed and hand built in Crewe, the W12 TSI Engine is the most advanced 21-cylinder engine in the world. The unique ‘W’ configuration means the engine is 24 per cent shorter than an equivalent v12, benefitting weight distribution and maximising usable cabin space. This means that the car produces 626 bhp, with an acceleration speed of 0-60 mph in only 3.6 seconds. Bentley have managed to produce a car which is capable of everything you can throw at it. Whether that be driving at 50 degrees Celsius in Death Valley, driving over frozen lakes and snow in Sweden, attending an evening dinner party, or even pushing it to the limit at a track day. The new Bentley Continental GT has left a strong lasting impression on me, one off class, refinement, power and craftmanship… and what a feeling that is.

LAMBORGHINI SC18: THE FIRST ‘ONE-OFF’

CREATED BY SQUADRA CORSE • • •

A unique car developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corse in conjunction with the customer Aerodynamics derived from experience in Lamborghini Super Trofeo and GT3 racing Track-oriented use and exclusive racing contents

Lamborghini Squadra Corse unveils the SC18, the first one-off in the history of the Sant’ Agata Bolognese motorsport division. The unique example, designed in synergy with the customer and Centro Stile Lamborghini, is road approved but designed primarily for use on the track. The SC18 paves the way to further personalized development projects for motorsport customers under the Squadra Corse brand. The car features extreme aerodynamics, developed specifically for this model and derived from Squadra Corse’s experience in competition. The racing elements start from the front hood, with air intakes in the style of the Huracán GT3 EVO; the sides and rear feature fenders, fins and airscoops are inspired by the Huracán Super Trofeo EVO. The aerodynamic system is completed by a large carbon fiber wing with three mechanical adjustments, able to generate the optimal downforce on any circuit. In addition, the twelve air intakes formed on the rear hood - a solution already tested successfully in endurance races - increase heat exchange and improve the cooling of the V12 engine. The powertrain is top-of-the-line Lamborghini, delivering the performance of a true racing car: the aspirated 6498 cm3 V12 delivers 770 hp at 8,500 rpm and a torque of 720 Nm at 6,750 rpm, all handled via the ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) optimized seven-speed gearbox. The huge power is combined with reduced weight thanks to the use of ultralight materials and the new carbon fiber body, with ground clearance of just 109 mm. The rear is characterized by the specific exhausts and terminals with a unique design and sound. The exclusiveness of the SC18 is underlined by the color of the carbon fiber body in the Grigio Daytona (grey), with visible details and red screen-printing to enhance its sportiness. The cockpit features interiors in Nero Ade (black) Alcantara with cross-stitching in Rosso Alala (red), and carbon fiber bucket seats. The look is completed by the single nut wheels, 20” on the front and 21” on the rear, with specially developed Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires and a telemetry system to measure all aspects of performance on the track.

The Pashley-Morgan range is available to purchase through the Morgan Motor Company factory shop, Morgan’s global network of Dealerships and selected Pashley Cycles outlets worldwide. The range of cycles have had public debuts to automotive and cycle enthusiasts alike, at recent Goodwood Revival and Eurobike events respectively. Following significant demand, both Morgan and Pashley are excited to announce that the bikes are now officially on sale. Interested customers are invited to visit the Morgan factory shop, make contact with their nearest Morgan Dealer or Pashley agent.

“People often refer to Pashley as “the Morgan of the bicycle world” and so I am delighted that there is now a close collaboration between our two companies, manifested in the new Pashley-Morgan range of bicycles. Pashley and Morgan share many similarities including our unrivalled heritage, design innovation and British craftsmanship and this is evidenced in the beautiful bicycles we have produced. These bicycles will appeal to Morgan car owners and discerning cyclists alike.” Adrian Williams, Managing Director, Pashley Cycles “The craftsmen and women at Morgan work passionately to duly reflect the brand qualities within every product we release. When exploring new product avenues and markets, the greatest way to accomplish this, with brand integrity maintained, is to collaborate with likeminded craftspeople across industries. It made absolute sense to embark on a collaborative project with Pashley. Our approach to developing any new product starts with a blank sheet of paper. It has been a fascinating process working alongside, and being influenced by, Pashley’s designers and craftsmen whilst evolving the designs. This unified approach, I believe, is apparent in the final offerings. I am particularly fond of the swept top tube. This feature is not only a first for Pashley, its intention is to mirror the gentle sloping shoulder line of current and future Morgan cars.” Jonathan Wells, Head of Design, Morgan Motor Company

Sinuous lines are, indeed, like a fil rouge accompanying guests in all areas of the yacht. Furniture too is characterised by soft, rounded shapes that stylishly harmonise with handcrafted, sophisticated décor elements - from the lacquered doors decorated by graceful, ‘waving’ bass-reliefs to the custom-made lamps in Murano glass with flower and leaf patterns drawing inspiration from nature, in perfect Liberty style. The elegant interiors are further enriched by oak-wood wall panelling with silver pickle finish. Every wood panel is a unique piece, created with unparalleled craftsmanship and decorated with fabrics selected individually by the Owner and wooden flower patterns that are also found in the ceiling-mounted spotlights of the master stateroom. The Latona can comfortably host up to 10 guests in five cabins characterised by extremely refined details: the master cabin, two VIP cabins and two double cabins, plus accommodation for 9 crew members, including the Captain.

MAIN DECK The cockpit on the main deck features large, comfortable living areas in the light blue and turquoise colour shades found in all outdoor decorations and a wide swimming pool with a mosaic that delightfully combines turquoise shades and golden details while also letting plenty of natural light shine through to illuminate the tender bay located below it. Inside, the Latona elegantly combines precious materials, sinuous pieces of furniture, and very refined hand-made decorations. All main deck areas are characterised by carved wood panels with fabric inserts and mirrors, dark oak-wood, and elegant marbles. The main deck salon includes a large dining room furnished with a stylish round table in walnut wood with silver decorations and chairs embellished by a floral pattern that will add an exclusive touch to equally exclusive gala dinners. The ceiling above this area has mirrors and wooden carvings that accurately reproduce the Emperor Dark embroidery decorating the floor. The ceiling-high glazing allows the opening of the dining area on three sides, to dine al fresco and enjoy the breathtaking view from the two sided terraces.

YACHTS

MAIN DECK As specifically requested by the Owner, the galley has been located behind the dining area, and a convenient hatch has been cut out in the wood panelling, making service even more efficient while being discreet and easily concealed when not needed. Amidship, along the corridor, the 1920s Parisian atmosphere embraces and enchants guests, thanks to the Liberty decorations on the doors and the uninterrupted wood panels decorated with floral patterns that separate the main salon from the lobby and the Owner’s apartment. In particular, the spiral staircase in front of the lift, which connects the three guest decks internally, is fitted with a central backlit column in wood lined with silver leaf. Slightly further, towards the bow, is the exclusive fullbeam Owner’s apartment, characterised by a very original layout. The cabin opens up to a living room furnished with a neutral-shade rounded sofa, a very exclusive and private area for the Owner couple. A distinctive element in this area is the fumoir, a private balcony that can also be enjoyed while cruising. The master stateroom impresses for the countless handmade details, such as the bed headboard in dark walnut wood and light-blue velvet, the soft and sinuous lines of the furniture, the white wool and silk carpeting decorated with the dark brown embroidery that runs across the entire yacht, and the elegant appliques in blown glass. The ceiling too is a true masterpiece of the skilful craftsmen that worked on it, with wooden five-petal flowers forming a crown around the spotlights. On the right-hand side of the suite is a spacious, exclusive private terrace offering a magnificent view of the sea. Inside the suite, two entrances allow to gain access to the bathroom for him and for her, entirely in magnificent bright Carrara marble. Here, the Emperor Dark shade makes the two mirroring washbasins and the sinuous dark brown embroidery decorating the floor stand out against the golden Calacatta marble. The large circular hydromassage tub and the walkthrough shower are located in the central part of the bathroom, while the finely elegant taps and the doors in processed glass with hautand bas-relief decorations are all stylishly harmonised details that add a truly unique touch to this room.

UPPER DECK Reaching the upper deck, guests are welcomed into a large salon devoted to music. Liberty style pervades this area too, as shown by the special custom-made sofa shaped as a lyre, a musical instrument typical of the 1920s, and by the decoration of the white carpet lying at its feet. Another eyecatcher in this room is the elegant, white-lacquered grand piano. All interiors are pervaded by bleached oakwood, with alternating matte and polished sections, and marble. The embroidered ceiling, the curved engravings in the wall wood panels, the precious curtains, and the Lalique lamps

LOWER DECK The Latona is a peaceful, luxurious haven, the peak of CRN’s innovative solutions being reached in the lower deck aft area, which has been turned into a large, exclusive open-air living area integrated with the beach club – over 80 square meters allowing space to enjoy moments of pure celebration both indoor and outdoor, to relax in the Turkish bath decorated with a custom mosaic, work out in the fitness area, lie down in the solarium, but also store all the water toys available for the whole family. Children can also have fun in the sea-water indoor pool - also featuring a precious blue and turquoise mosaic - that becomes a garage for the tender when the yacht is cruising. The lower deck also hosts the four guest cabins. Two double VIP cabins can be found aft, decorated with fabric-lined panels, lacquered panels, mirrors adding even more depth to the cabins, and carpeting with a refined, sinuous pattern reminiscent of sea waves. Two twin cabins are located at the bow. One is for the younger children and is furnished with a bunk bed (plus a concealed one for the nanny), while the second has two sliding beds that can be converted into a double, as well as an additional pullman bed. All cabins are ensuite, with bathrooms sharing the same style as the Owner’s, from the fine marbles to the large showers with a seat.

contribute to making this area truly unique. Thanks to the wide side windows and the glazed surfaces opening up to 120°, the music salon is very bright and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Outdoor, guests can find the al fresco dining area, featuring a fully-customized teak table in Liberty style, a bar, and a lovely open-air tea room, the real jewel on this deck. Two large sun pads complete this area, while the inflatable climbing wall will undoubtedly offer unforgettable and exciting adventures. The upper deck lobby is embellished by Central European-style details and is covered by a skylight that lets in plenty of light directly from the sundeck. Walking further towards the bow, the Captain’s cabin and office can be reached, followed by the navigation bridge, built in the same dark brown shade as Latona’s recurrent embroidery motif. The living area and the solarium located in the forward part of the yacht are very large and comfortable. Here, all the furniture is in navy with furnishings in a lovely palette of light blue shades. This area also features the concealed garage for the rescue boat - located under a huge sun pad with cushions, a roll-out awning - and two jet skis.

SUNDECK The sundeck, in typical Mediterranean style, is made up of three ideally-separate but physically-uninterrupted areas that unite to become one single open space: the dining area, the forward sunbathing area fitted with a Jacuzzi, and the aft solarium, furnished with four sunbeds and an imposing sunbathing area that develops vertically, remains isolated from the rest of the deck and therefore ideal for total relaxation. The inflatable slide, one of the family’s favourite toys, is deployed on one side towards the stern, while the central area, conceived to enjoy the pleasure of sharing meals with the family’s dear ones, also features a pleasant water mist system installed in the ceiling to cool this area when needed. A barbecue and an American Bar can also be found here. Onboard comfort is ensured by latest-generation home automation solutions, allowing control of the audio-video system, the lights, as well as the decorative and black-out curtains using the i-Pads installed in all areas and rooms or directly from one’s own device after downloading the dedicated app. Thanks to two Caterpillar C32 1081kW @ 2300 rpm engines, the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 16 knots and a cruising speed of 14 knots. The Latona is the latest jewel created by CRN and the utmost expression of the craftsmanship and mastery of a dedicated and demanding team, driven by the vision and passion of a highly-selective and determined Owner family. This yacht fully embodies the Shipyard’s will to shape the Owner’s talent and wishes, as expressed by the motto “Made by you with our own hands.”

With the recent launch of their "fully custom-made" jewellery store on King Street in Manchester, Austen & Blake have shown that pulling technology and expertise from the online world into the high street's retail experience can increase both quality of service as well as value for money for the customer. In a world where design techology allows the customer to preview what their ring is going to look like – and where technology allows craftsmen to deliver that beautiful ring within a week – the company's founders realised that it made no sense to do what all the other high street jewellery brands were doing: sink countless resources in keeping a huge inventory of ready-made pieces. They realised the opportunity existed to do things differently and focus instead on what the customer really wants out of their jewellery: something unique and personal.

getting engaged – are also things you need to consider carefully if you're going to be successful. Nobody wakes up one morning, goes to a jewellery shop to buy an engagement ring, and proposes over lunch. At least, not if they're serious about getting a 'yes'. So, waiting a few days for your ring is also an opportunity to work out what you should improve about yourself, in order to get a 'yes'. In our view, that thoughtful look at yourself is an intrinsic part of customisation just as much as designing the ring to suit your style." The store on King Street is delightfully casual. Customers are treated like visitors, encouraged to learn about diamonds and jewellery in the education area, where books and computer resources tell them about colour, clarity, carat, cut, and the different ways jewellery design can express the wearer's own taste, fashion and personality. It's a very different way of looking at jewellery, and a real breath of fresh air. T: 0161 885 3803

ANANYA INTERVIEW Supporting, inspiring and adorning women lies at the heart of Ananya Fine Jewellery. Indeed, Ananya herself is nothing if not a very inspiring women. After completing her Bachelor’s Degree at Central Saint Martins in London, Ananya immersed herself in the art of jewellery. Fascinated by the rich history of her craft, collaborations with institutions like the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Barbican came naturally and Ananya was awarded the Suffragettes Design Award resulting in her being given the opportunity to design a brooch for celebrated women scientists and Nobel Prize winners. She was also selected by Swarovski to create a piece for the Runway Rocks fashion show. Having spent time in workshops all over India, she studied indigenous jewellery making traditions and collaborated with one of India’s leading jewellery houses, Amrapali. Still wanting to further her exploration of jewels and gemology, Ananya then undertook the Graduate Gemologist Program at the Gemology Institute of America, one of the most prestigious qualifications in the industry. AOL: Talk me through your creative process, I know every designers’ is different. How do you get from initial ideas/ inspiration to the exquisite pieces that make up your collection? AFJ: I find inspiration can be drawn from both my surroundings and my experiences. Every time I read a book or visit a gallery – I particularly love the Victoria and Albert Museum and National Art Library – I learn more and draw on different inspirations. It all feeds into my designs. Varied spiritual ideologies also provide inspiration for me as I feel that while jewellery is often viewed as something very material, it represents so much more. Often, it is a piece of jewellery that marks an important moment in one’s life so every time you wear that piece you’re reminded of that special time. Having studied gemstones as objects of value through the GIA and as spiritual forms through gemstone healing, I really began to view them in such a different and deeper light. Historically jewellery was always created to serve a greater purpose than just adornment and it is that approach which underpins how I create my collection, colours, gemstones and use of materials.

AOL: What are your personal favourite clothing brands and why? AFJ: I love Zimmerman because even if you’re not on vacation putting on one of their dresses makes you feel like it. Cushnie is amazing, so strong yet feminine. Temperley London is the epitome of ladylike elegance. Last but by no means least, Alexander Wang is my idea of comfort. AOL: Which other jewellery designers do you most admire? Both in terms of both business and artistry. AFJ: I love jewellers who reinvent the wheel when it comes to fine jewellery. Who set the most precious stones in the most unusual way that surprise you, combinations and techniques that are truly unique. A few that I admire are Ana Khouri, Marina B, Suzanne Belperron and Victoire De Castellane. AOL: Where would you ideally like to see yourself and your brand in a decade? AFJ: I’d like to continue building my brand into something iconic and influential while continuing to encourage responsible sourcing of jewels. I want to be a part of the change for a better future in an industry that has had its fair share of controversial history. Another hope I have is to to dispel old concepts of what jewellery should be, and change it be what jewellery can be. My brand was built on the foundation that jewellery isn’t just material, it serves a purpose and has a deeper meaning, I would like people to view Ananya fine jewellery like that.

AOL: What is your proudest career achievement so far? AFJ: Honestly, just the fact the fact that I am able to work on the dream that I had in university is so exciting that I have to pinch myself.I just want to continue doing this work that I love and meeting so many exciting people. AOL: Gender equality and supporting other women seems to be an integral part of the Ananya ethos, and personally important to you. In your opinion, what more could - and should - we be collectively doing to support and further this incredibly important cause? AFJ: My core team consists of women. I do think that I work with women very well and in my industry the women who I meet have so much passion for their work and that inspires me to do my best every single day. Our audience and customer is largely female and I want to stay in tune with their needs, what better way than working with people that can understand my customer? These days there is a huge focus of feminism and gender equality which is something that I am very passionate about, but there is also a very prominent focus in celebrity media of pitting women against each other as if we are all in competition with each other which trickles down into society.

I hope to keep supporting the women around me and showing this example of modern feminism through my campaigns. It is such a pleasure to hear positive feedback with jewellery professionals and my contemporaries whom I had always admired and I think that this is how working professional relationships should be. AOL: Which women inspire you the most and why? And who would you most love to see wearing your designs? AFJ: Amal Clooney is definitely a huge inspiration, she is a woman who really does it all and is incredibly intelligent and accomplished. The same applies to Indra Nooyi, one of the most powerful women in the world and 4th wealthiest CEO. She was born in the same city that I was and is an inspiration and a force to be reckoned with. Other women I admire and who inspire me are actresses Felicity Jones and Gal Gadot. I would be over the moon to see any of them wearing my designs. AOL: The past couple of years have seen brands from Topshop and H&M to Gucci and Bvlgari accept and embrace social media, working with influencers on everything from Instagram collaborations to catwalk shows and ambassador programmes. Do you feel that this approach is valuable to luxury brands? Is it something you hope/ plan on incorporating into your strategy for Ananya? AFJ: Luxury brands have always felt unapproachable to many people. Times have changed, an influencer that shares the same beliefs and ideals allows a brand to connect to their community, breaking down barriers and providing a platform to be understood and appreciated. As and when I feel this opportunity is available I will embrace it!

PATINA COLLECTION: ALICE MADE THIS INTRODUCING THE LAUNCH OF A NEW ACCESSORIES COLLECTION FROM AWARD WINNING BRITISH ACCESSORIES BRAND ALICE MADE THIS.

An engineered collection of cufflinks, artistically finished with London based patina artist Derek Bayley. Inspired by ancient patina techniques, combinations of metals and chemicals are oxidised through atmospheric exposure and layered to create deep colours and refined finishes. Featuring Hickory brown, Luna silver, Salmon, Prussian blue and Quink coloured patina surfaces, each pair of cufflinks is formed from a precise chemical recipe and expertly processed by hand. This solid brass collection features five different patina surfaces and will be available online and in selected retailers from June 2018. www.alicemadethis.com @alicemadethis

PATINA The Patina Collection sees Alice Made This working with London based patina specialist Derek Bayley, who is personally dedicated to the individual quality and refinement of each piece. We begin preparing our pieces by sand blasting or cleaning it with a fine abrasive. Each piece is precisely heated with a blow torch and the specific chemicals are dissolved in water before being expertly applied by hand. The patinas are a true combination of art and science, adding propane heat to recipes containing silver nitrate, titanium oxide, ferric nitrate, potassium sulphide and copper nitrate to achieve a visually complex and beautifully durable surface. A deep coloured patina finish is the result of layering and mixing the chemicals and oxidising them in the immediate atmosphere. Once our cufflinks are cooled, we apply multiple layers of microcrystalline and carnauba wax to preserve the complex face, then buff and polish back the exposed brass areas for a contemporary and engineered finish.

A WORD FROM ALICE WALSH “Our Patina collection has been a joy to develop. Collaborating with the immensely skilled Derek Bayley, we have experimented like young chemists to create a palette of patina’s that are durable, exciting, beautiful and refined. The combination of art and science in the patina process really struck a chord. The result is a timeless collection with a contemporary aesthetic developed using a traditional, artistic and experimental process.” ENGINEERED SIMPLICITY Alice Made This is a British jewellery brand for men and women. It was founded with a clear and precise intention: to create Engineered Simplicity. Alice Made This was founded in 2012 to design refined objects of desire and uses British industrial engineering methods to offer simple accessories and jewellery. Based in South East London, Alice Made This is inspired by form, proportion and geometry, with a passion and respect for materials at its core.

ANN DUNBAR ART I am an award-winning British artist, living and working in Paris, France. My art is a history of travel to far-away places and wild parts of the natural world. I enjoy searching for hidden places that go unnoticed in our busy world. Additionally my art is not just about a vision, but about an emotion. The ambience of many pieces transposes feelings of calm, serenity and mindfulness contemplation. The power of colour and textural delight is deployed directly from nature’s beauty onto the paper to feed your soul and uplift your spirit. My expression is figurative with a romantic, contemporary, impressionistic style and for a luxurious touch; I employ lush embroidery to my painting. The combination is unique and unusual. The embroidery itself is a provocative statement of charm. However, the intricate detail of the stitching, known as “needle painting”, is like an enchanting magical wand bringing out a vividness and lifelike quality to the scene. The rich, exciting textures add depth as well as a three dimensional effect to the atmospheric transparent washes of watercolour.
