CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY (RHS) POSTPONES 2021 RHS CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW TO SEPTEMBER For the first time in its 108 year history, the RHS is postponing RHS Chelsea Flower Show to take place in the autumn instead of spring, due to the worldwide pandemic. The 2021 Show, which would have taken place between 18 May and 23 May, has been moved to run from 21 September to 26 September. The RHS, the Show organisers, will still hold the world famous event at The Royal Hospital, Chelsea.

4

The RHS had done its utmost to ensure the Show could happen safely in May with numerous additional health and safety measures, such as reducing visitor numbers and spreading the Show over an extra day.

partners, volunteers and staff, to delay the 2021 RHS Chelsea Flower Show to later in the year, when millions more people will have been vaccinated and it is more likely that the levels of infection will have reduced substantially.

However, with the coronavirus infection rate currently so high across the UK and no guarantee on what tier London may be in over spring, we have a responsibility to our exhibitors and everyone involved in the Show, our visitors,

This continues to be an unprecedented and difficult time for so many people worldwide and the health and safety of our members, visitors, exhibitors and staff remains our number one priority.

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW As well as looking back at its historic Great Autumn Show for inspiration, the RHS is excited about the ideas exhibitors will have to create spectacular autumnal gardens and displays. Exhibitors who were to take part in the cancelled May event will all be given the opportunity to be at the autumn RHS Chelsea Flower Show. We will also be opening up applications for new gardens, nurseries and content. In addition to the autumn event, the RHS will once again hold its hugely successful RHS Virtual Chelsea Flower Show online, during the May show week, which millions of people across the UK and around the world tuned in to enjoy last year.

The RHS will be in touch with everyone who has purchased a ticket for the event to date. We are asking that ticket holders please refrain from contacting us immediately so that we can handle this situation as efficiently as possible.

Whilst the September Show will be very different to the usual spring event, the RHS believes it will celebrate the best of autumn horticulture, with many seasonal highlights including Salvias, Asters, Dahlias, grasses and fruit and vegetables.

Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, says: “In these challenging times we have always followed Government advice and made difficult, responsible decisions with the health and safety of people our key concern.

CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW

“Whilst we are sad to have had to delay RHS Chelsea and are sorry for the disruption this will cause, we are excited that we are still planning to bring the world’s best loved gardening event to the nation at a time when more people are gardening more than ever. “We know that the autumn dates may not be suitable for everyone, but with our fantastic industry partners we will do everything we can to support them and create a show that will be a moment in history. It will be exciting to see different horticulture and showcase the key autumn gardening season at the world’s most famous flower show. We believe many designers and nurseries will look forward to working with different plants that would not be available or at their best in May. “Never have so many people gardened in recent times, nor needed the benefits of gardening more, so we will do our utmost to deliver a beautiful, uplifting and different RHS Chelsea safely in September 2021.” As was planned for the event in May, RHS Chelsea Flower Show in September will be spread over six days instead of five, with the same reduced number of visitors, another first in its history. There are many further coronavirus safety precautions being put in place for exhibitors, everyone involved in the show, visitors and RHS staff and volunteers.

The RHS is fundraising £40m to transform our gardens, outreach and education facilities, which includes redeveloping our flagship RHS Garden Wisley and opening a new garden, RHS Garden Bridgewater, in 2021. We are solely funded by our members, visitors and supporters. For more information visit www.rhs.org.uk

IN SEARCH OF RECREATING RESTAURANT QUALITY,

WOOD FIRED FOOD AT HOME Wood fired pizza ovens became one of the hits of lockdown last year, as a direct result of a surge in interest in home cooking and an overall desire to produce food akin to restaurant fayre. This year, outdoor cooking in general, along with the use of wood fired ovens, will again be very popular, as people stay at home and the desire to enhance the overall eating experience prevails. Landscape designers can tap into this trend and use the resource of Surrey based ‘Kitchen in the Garden’ – specialists in outdoor kitchens and wood fired pizza ovens – that provide expert advice alongside a wide range of suitable products. Certain things are best done outside - wood fired cooking really does deliver a superior cooking taste and experience and is one that has been tried and tested throughout the generations of time. At ‘Kitchen in the Garden’ we have seen wood fired ovens really coming into their own over recent years. The best pizzas are cooked outside as indoor ovens cannot get up to the ideal temperature of 360 to 400 oC. But it is not just pizza. In fact, there is nothing better than a wood fired leg of lamb with the additional bonus of avoiding the cooking smell that inevitably lingers indoors. Wood fired ovens can be stand alone or form part of a complete outdoor kitchen -depending on the customer’s garden space or individual requirements. They can be anything from a modern design to a more traditional style. Essentially, there are two types; built in with a surround of your own choice, of which the best brand is Le Panyol, or freestanding/countertop, that can either sit within an outdoor kitchen or have its own stand.

12

www.landud.co.uk

want to cook and for how many. Bread bakers need a large oven, or if they want to cook several pizzas at once. One should take in to account that wood fired ovens take longer to heat up but are cheaper in initial outlay and can provide a good wood smoky flavour for longer roasts. Pizzas can be cooked in as little as 90 seconds, so gas fired ovens with a quicker heat up time deliver greater convenience. Leading brands in the UK are Delivita (sounds Italian, but actually made in Yorkshire) and Alfa Forni or Fontana – Italy’s best. If your customer is nervous about cooking with wood, or just impatient to wait for things to heat up, there are gas fired options as well as hybrid (gas and wood). The True Neapolitan Pizza Association (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, AVPN), the guardians of pizza tradition, have shown, after strict trials and blind tasting, that gas is able to cook a real Neapolitan pizza just as well as a wood-fired oven! Clients should choose a size based on what they

Planning on where to store the oven is also key. You will need an area for preparation and serving and enough space around to do some theatrics with the pizza peel. The beauty of wood burning ovens is anyone can learn how to use them, whether you are a beginner or a professional chef.

THREE TIERS FOR AWARD-WINNING GARDEN up, so along with making sure the garden could form a picturesque backdrop for the evening, they also wanted to make outdoor living a bigger part of their lifestyle.”

An uphill task To combat the steep incline of the garden, Green Acorn Landscape Design opted for a three-tiered approach. This enabled each level to have its own identity, which ensured the garden met the various requirements of the client. The bottom level allowed for outdoor eating and entertaining, the middle space for relaxation in the sunshine, and the top level – containing a water feature and pergola – facilitated relaxation in a more sheltered space. Greg continues: “To remain inkeeping with the house brickwork, similar materials and colours were used throughout the design in the dividing walls and red cedar fencing. It ensures continuity of aesthetic, and provides a photogenic view across all three levels when seen from the kitchen window.”

Go with the flow Tasked with transforming a small overgrown garden into an aesthetic oasis of urban tranquillity, Green Acorn Landscape Design set about delivering an award-winning landscaping project that would satisfy the client’s requirements. To overcome a number of challenges, not least a steep incline that sloped towards the house, a striking threetier approach was adopted. Based in the North-West of England but with customers spanning across the globe, Green Acorn Landscape Design has worked on a diverse range of projects. Owned and

14

www.landud.co.uk

run by landscaping expert Greg Jacobs, it specialises in modern and contemporary outdoor living spaces. Even so, when approached to provide a solution for a cramped, untidy, and overgrown garden in Wigan, it was clear that an innovative design was required. “First and foremost, the client wanted the garden to be modernised and serviceable, which was challenging enough given the topography of the space,” explains Greg. “But it also needed to have that aesthetic ‘wow factor’. Their daughter’s prom night was coming

Crucially, the visually striking aesthetic of the garden needed to be underpinned by an effective yet discreet water management solution that would mitigate the significant effect of the slope towards the house and prevent pooling of water at the bottom of the tiers. “Drainage is key to any project, but particularly this one with it being a tiered garden,” says Greg. “It allows surface water to be directed elsewhere from site to waste, which in turn prevents flooding, a buildup of water, and unsightly pools adjacent to the house.

GARDEN DESIGN Robert Butcher, Design Services Manager at ACO Water Management, comments: “Our HexDrain Brickslot solution is popular predominantly for its aesthetic benefits, given its small profile and sleek design. However, from our perspective we want to make sure it performs as it needs to, both from a hydraulic capacity point of view but also in terms of installation. “Manufactured from recycled polypropylene, the channels clip together for quick and easy installation which minimises disruption to live projects. It ultimately provides peace of mind when it comes to water management, and allows landscapers to focus on meeting their clients’ demands.”

Award winning results The innovative three-tired approach to the project has resulted in Green Acorn Landscape Design winning a 2020 BALI National Landscape Award. It is recognition of a bespoke design which met the various criteria of the client, in the face of a challenging set of circumstances. With drainage set to continue as a key consideration in building and landscaping projects, it is vital that companies such as Green Acorn Landscape Design have access to solutions which are both practical, and in-keeping with core aesthetic values. This has become a cornerstone of ACO HexDrain® Brickslot, and the many projects it features in.

“We opted for ACO HexDrain® Brickslot owing to its minimalistic look. Its discreet appearance means it can fit into virtually any garden design, and we do in fact use it across all of our projects as a result. Follow us @ludmagazine

The Brickslot is also very small in terms of its footprint, which for a garden tight on space, such as this one, is a further advantage.”

On the back of this success, we expanded our family business into complementary brands retailing products such Italian mirror glass furniture, Murano sculptures and custom lighting projects. My involvement in the business goes back as far as I can remember... I started out helping here and there in the office, warehouse duties, and serving our clients over the telephone... With this in mind, and after countless hours of work I launched my own brand … Luxterior was born out of my love for design and a passion for bringing clients’ ideas to fruition, thanks to the amazing industry contacts our family has nurtured since 2003. CLARKE TERRACE

MYTO D.E.V.

MYTO design d’espaces vivants is proud to announce a new landscape design, which won an award at the Grands Prix du Design 2020 in the Residential Patio and Landscaping category. Designer Martine Brisson and landscape architect Roxanne Miller worked for more than a year to create a green rooftop with custom planters atop a home in Westmount. The sprawling 1965 square foot space is dedicated to relaxation. It boasts a spectacular view and seamless integration with the surrounding landscape.

22

www.landud.co.uk

After renovating the house in 2016, the owner of the luxury property wanted to make the most of the flat roof by turning it into a deck. He engaged MYTO design d’espaces vivants, whose specialties include green rooftops. The mandate was to create a space focused on wellness. It was to be suitable for entertaining and would showcase a breathtaking view of the city and surrounding areas. True to their brand, the two women decided to create a contemporary, visually striking,

and streamlined outdoor space bordered with colorful, somewhat unruly vegetation. The decking is made of ipe wood, a species known for its toughness, high density, and beautiful color. To ensure safe enjoyment of the view and vegetation, a transparent glass parapet encloses the entire perimeter. One of the project’s challenges was to create elegant furnishings that would conceal ventilation equipment on the roof. Brisson and Miller designed a set of wood-clad Follow us @ludmagazine

planters to conceal the equipment. “We designed these planters from the ground up to meet this project’s requirements. The wooden elements are removed in winter to prevent swelling,” the designer notes. Once the design was complete, Atelier Papineau took charge of building the planters. In the planters and on the green terrace, Miller opted for perennials and indigenous species, to minimize maintenance and replanting. The planters are insulated for overwintering. The horticulturist also took care to work with a harmonious color palette (pink, blue, violet) and chose plants with different flowering times (brief and long) so that there would be elegant flowers throughout the warm season.

GARDEN DESIGN Brisson and Miller also wanted subtle lighting for the plants, choosing minimalist fixtures from Jardin d’ombre et lumière. In the evening, the space has a warm, intimate, and thoroughly relaxing ambiance.

After more than a year of work, the result is a rooftop terrace that blends with the surrounding canopy. Shaded by large trees at almost every time of day, the space is

surrounded by colorful wildflowers that frame a gorgeous view of downtown Montreal.

CARIBBEAN BLINDS TEAMS UP WITH GB ATHLETES

External shading manufacturer Caribbean Blinds has completed another expert installation of its award-winning Outdoor Living Pod™ for a family of Surrey based athletes. GB Masters competitors Virginia Mitchell (World and European Champion W55 at 400m) and husband Tony (British Champion at 300m hurdles) saw the ongoing lockdown as the perfect opportunity to enhance their home gym and fitness studio which they utilise daily for training sessions, alongside their two grown-up children – also budding track athletes! Having previously commissioned a large spa pool situated just outside the gym, the Mitchells required a solution that would seamlessly link the two areas. The couple decided that due to its unique louvered roof, the Outdoor Living Pod™ would provide them with the flexible cover they needed.

30

www.landud.co.uk

Stuart Dantzic, Managing Director of Caribbean Blinds, explained: “Following a full demonstration of the system and provision of samples to showcase the high-quality finish, sleek design and durable construction of our products, the Deluxe model of the Outdoor Living Pod™ was selected. The one-day installation resulted in an impressive low-maintenance outdoor facility that complements the adjoining gym and spa pool.” Virginia Mitchell commented: “Our fitness studio and pool are the focal point of our garden – and our lives! “We opted for the Deluxe model of the Pod as we felt it would provide the optimum balance of style and practicality. The beautiful, sleek white canopy roof acts as the perfect link between the gym and the pool, and we’re delighted with how it looks and functions.

“The louvered roof panels cover the spa and protect it from the elements, yet at the flick of a switch, they turn to let in the light and sunshine – plus, we love how the open sides make you feel like you’re still in the natural open space of the garden.” The addition of the Pod has also been a godsend for Tony who has his own water-based sports rehabilitation business, AquaTone. Tony Mitchell added: “My business has really thrived in lockdown thanks to the Outdoor Living Pod™. My clients can do their work out in the pool with protection from all elements, all year round and they have been very complimentary about our new spa facility.”

EDGING IN STEEL

WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM STEELSCAPES Why a steel edge?

Zero maintenance

There is little more satisfying than a sharp divide between different elements of the landscape, and in Steelscapes’ opinion nothing achieves this better than steel.

Mild and Corten steel edging will weather naturally. This means there is no surface covering which can degrade or needs reapplying.

Appearance Flexibility Unlike a concrete or timber edge steel will form curves with ease, simply secure one end with a stake and walk it round staking as you go, allowing the steel to form the most natural curves for you.

Good value

From their base on the Norfolk coast Steelscapes fabricate and supply direct to the UK’s design and construction industry. They have an enviable client list to include The National Trust, English Heritage and Royal Estates which has seen their edging installed in numerous public spaces, private gardens developments across the UK and as far afield as Saudi Arabia!

While the initial expense of a steel edge is greater than timber, this should be more than offset by the cost of replacing a timber edge numerous times over the lifetime of a steel edge. Steelscapes edging is guaranteed for 25 years.

The warm earthy browns of weathered steel blend perfectly into the landscape. There is something gratifyingly honest about rusted steel in the garden.

Fast installation The steelscapes edging system is remarkably simple to install, requiring just a spanner and hammer, supplied in 2 or 3 meter lengths with all stakes and fixings supplied as standard you can cover ground fast with a steel edge. All with no visible fixings on the seen face.

Robust Despite its flexibility steel is strong, a 6mm thick edging will tolerate being driven over making it ideal for driveways.

Where can it be used ? There are the more obvious applications such as borders, lawns, paths and roads but also for an edge to artificial lawns and resin bonded surfaces. The Steelscapes edging range extends to 300mm high making it ideal for raised beds, terracing and steps. So if you’re looking for crisp, robust edging to your scheme, steel is the only the way forward.

Proposed shingle areas, with weed prevention membrane.

MARTIN SKUSE, LANDSCAPE DESIGNER, URBAN EARTH The swimming pool site area is within a Grade II Listed house and garden within the village of Lympstone, Devon, with lovely views towards the Exe Estuary.

The proposed pool site was chosen for the elevated views towards the Exe Estuary and the area is also away from any important trees within the garden.

Site Survey and Design Brief

We received a quick sketch plan from the client, showing the initial proposals and requirements for the pool and surrounding landscape, including a plant room to be located to the west of the pool, two decking areas at either end of the pool, to be linked by stepping-stone slabs over a shingle area with proposed Mediterranean planting, including lavender hedging.

At the initial site meeting we took photos and made survey notes for the proposed swimming pool location, an existing sloping lawn area, with a mature beech hedge adjacent to one end of the pool and a historic rubble stone boundary wall alongside the length of the site area.

34

www.landud.co.uk

The sloping ground where the pool is to be located will need to be carefully excavated, after any archaeological investigations and recording have been completed, if required during the excavation. The existing slope requires infilling to the west and south sides of the pool, with new retaining structures to allow for the proposed depth and new surrounding levels. The pool area will also need to be partscreened from the existing driveway by new shrubs or trees, so it does not detract from the historic setting of the listed house from the drive.

GARDEN DESIGN

Design Development We developed the detailed design, from the initial client sketch and requirements, with the following landscape proposals: • Oak sleeper stepped retaining walls and new planting beds, to allow for the change in levels and to sensitively screen the pool area, to reduce the visual impact on the historic garden setting; • Proposed long-lasting composite Millboard decking areas at either end of the pool, with bull-nosed pool coping;

Follow us @ludmagazine

• Natural stone slab, bull-nosed pool coping edges to retain shingle areas; • Proposed natural stepping-stone slabs to cross over shingle, link decking areas, and tie-in with the pool stone coping. • Lavender hedging wrapped around the pool north and east boundaries; • Proposed Mediterranean planting to be planted in drifts of contrasting pebble and shingle areas, with a geotextile weed prevention layer; including specimen olive and dwarf mountain pine trees;

• A waterfall feature, with varied size natural stone boulders and planting, to include ferns, grasses and other planting around the stones. As required for the planning application, we produced a Site Plan showing the swimming pool location and context within the surrounding area of the garden; and a Detailed Section through the pool to illustrate the visual impact on the historic garden setting. We also produced a Landscape Plan and detailed highquality 3d images to help the client visualise the proposals.

GARDEN DESIGN

Planning Requirements As a listed historic house and garden, the swimming pool project required Planning Permission and Listed Building Consent. Therefore, a planning consultant was appointed by the client to secure permission from the local planning authority; with the help of our landscape design team plans and sections, and the specialist swimming pool company proposals. Other supporting documents, as required by the planning permission conditions, also include: • The implementation of a programme of archaeological work in accordance with a written scheme of investigation, produced by a suitably qualified archaeologist. To ensure that features of archaeological or architectural importance are recorded before their destruction or concealment and to ensure that an appropriate record is made of archaeological evidence that may be affected by the development. • A detailed Arboricultural Method Statement, by a suitably qualified and experienced arboriculturist, to include the Implementation, supervision and monitoring of an approved Tree Protection Scheme and planting proposals to screen the pool area from the house driveway to the west of the pool; Tree Work Specification; Construction Works within any area protected in the approved Tree Protection Scheme; and the Timing and phasing of

36

www.landud.co.uk

Arboricultural works in relation to the approved development. A pre-commencement condition is required to ensure retention and protection of trees on the site during and after construction. The Urban Earth Design and Construction team were delighted to be asked to design, carry out the pool excavations, and construct the swimming pool landscape works for this local, and historically important, property; based on our previously completed high-quality landscape work and our design team experience, including historic homes and gardens and swimming pool projects.

HOW TO BUY SCULPTURE FOR A GARDEN

BY IAN HAY, DIRECTOR OF THE SAUL HAY GALLERY IN MANCHESTER

two or more of these media. Styles can range from lifelike animal representations to pure abstraction and everything in between and it’s all based on personal choice. Artists that do very well at the Saul Hay Gallery include the internationally renowned wildlife sculptor, David Cemmick, Jo Risley who works in various metals to produce semi abstract works inspired by nature and Gareth Griffith, the Welsh sculptor who creates colourful and eye-catching works of art intended to catch people’s attention and draw them closer.

When it comes to buying sculpture for a garden, ask yourself, what do you want the sculpture to bring to the space? Is it to offer sharp, bold contrast to the living elements of the garden or blend in with natural forms? Is it to make a statement or bring in a surprising element that will inject fun and intrigue? I believe that garden sculpture should be impactful but never too dominant or it can jar with the overall view of the garden. While making it an integral part of the garden, it adds contrast to the natural forms and colours by introducing bold colours and geometric shapes. It has the power to create perspective that leads the eye through the design and ties the whole space together, acting as a ‘guide post’ that divides sections and creates structure.

Key Considerations There are lots of things to consider when buying sculpture for your garden and of course so much depends on the size and style of the space and what your intentions

38

www.landud.co.uk

are with your design. Sculptural pieces can range from 30cm to a few metres in height. You don’t want to overcrowd the garden and lose the impact of individual sculptures, but nor do you want the sculptures to get lost because they are too small or too few. Choosing work of the right scale for your space and the impact you intend them to make is crucial.

My main piece of advice when buying sculpture – trust your taste and stick to your vision for the garden. Be as ambitious as possible; try not to compromise as you are building a garden to enjoy for many years to come.

Buying Sculpture When it comes to buying, for fine art sculpture as opposed to more conventional garden ornaments, approach a specialist gallery who will not only show outdoor sculpture but can offer advice on selecting the right work for your requirements. Sculptural works can be purchased “off the peg” or can be specially commissioned to fit your space, taste and budget. The range of outdoor sculpture is huge. In terms of materials alone you have marble, stone, stainless steel, painted steel, Corten steel, bronze, aluminium, wood, ceramics and, of course, combinations of

SCAG WINDSTORM LEAF BLOWER TICKS A LOT OF BOXES

And when you think of full day’s work wearing a backpack blower you can see a further advantage as regards wear and tear on the operator, as Eric did himself, having had a back injury in the past. Not only are you not walking about wearing a backpack, you are riding on the machine, with its comfortable sprung operator stand. Also Eric had also found additional benefits. Where it is requested that grass cuttings are not left behind and the property set-up allows – the Windstorm can blow the cuttings away!

The SCAG Windstorm, supplied by STM Co Ltd, is a stand-on high-power cyclone leaf blower. With an engine size of 37HP you can see that the expression “highpower” is not used lightly. The stand-on configuration was developed for the SCAG V-Ride grasscutting range and has proved very successful as a format for ease of transport, visibility and manoeuverability. One such machine has been bought by Eric Gilbert for his Landscaping and grounds maintenance company. These machines are, as can be judged from the

Outstanding performance. Whatever the task.

picture, quite an investment – but Eric has no trouble justifying it – and not just on financial grounds. The quoted performance figure for the Windstorm is 6000cfm and there are several quotes as to how this translates into time saved, for example: 6 men clearing leaf debris on a holiday park in 30 minutes turns into one man in 20 minutes. Eric himself, working on big properties, has seen a whole day’s intricate work by two people reduced easily to one man in two hours.

He has also used it to great effect to clear light powdery snow, making it a machine for all year; and if impacted snow clearance is required, a snow blade can be fitted to his SCAG SWZ pedestrian mower. A man who has been using SCAG machines for years he was already a convert – and now even more so, with evidence both physical and financial to support his purchase of the SCAG Windstorm. The machines are available through the STM dealership network. To find your nearest dealer ring 01789 488450, email info@st-mach.com or look at our website www.st-mach.com

JACOBSEN INTRODUCES THE ECLIPSE 360 ELiTE LITHIUM MOWER

- THE ELITE STANDARD OF GREEN MOWING The new Eclipse 360 ELiTE from Jacobsen has been designed to combine the next generation of ELiTE lithium-ion batteries with a signature cut that has been trusted for a century. ELiTE batteries have powered E-Z-GO vehicles for over 15 million hours, and that technology has been adopted by the E360 ELiTE to make a mower that can cut 50+ large greens on a single charge.

42

www.landud.co.uk

Noise during operation is reduced to virtual silence, meaning the machine can be used to cut anywhere early in the morning without disruption. The significant reduction in noise pollution is combined with zero air pollution with the all-electric model, while fuel consumption is reduced when cutting with the diesel hybrid. Jacobsen has a decade’s worth of experience with the Eclipse range, and that has been reflected in the

features of this new machine. The Patented Frequency of Clip Control ensures a consistent cut every time by linking the reel speed to the forward speed. By having the reels turning in time with the wheels you’re able to keep a consistent frequency of cut regardless of who is mowing, but still have the option to increase it without reducing the mowing speed. This control is taken further with individual unit control that can adapt the cutting

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

configuration to vary wheel runs and truly eliminate triplex ring. Attention has also been paid to the access and maintenance aspects of the machine. A swing-out centre unit has been added for quick and easy cleaning, maintenance or swapping the unit. No tools are required to swing the unit out with the removal of a lynchpin that is then used to hold the unit in the swung-out position all that is needed.

Seven, nine, eleven or fifteen blade reels are available for the E360 ELiTE to allow for varied applications of the machine from golf greens and tees to football pitches and ornamental gardens.

All of these changes were made following a 360-durability review that has also included the addition of new brushless lift actuators that have ten times the lifespan of the previous option.

RIGBY TAYLOR INTRODUCE THE FIRST, 4 CULTIVAR, TETRAPLOID PERENNIAL RYEGRASS BLEND Changes in climatic conditions are proving increasingly challenging for turf maintenance. In recent times weather patterns have fluctuated from one extreme to the other. Late frosts, snow or drought in spring, summer heat waves accompanied by prolonged drought and periods of intense rainfall are all becoming commonplace. Tetraploid perennial ryegrass has double the number of chromosomes (4n) compared with diploid perennial ryegrass, resulting in high vigour, extremely stress tolerant plants. One of the main benefits, increased cellular chloroplast, boosts chlorophyll production to aid energy absorption and processing. The outcome is a robust, hardwearing, healthier plant that can better withstand climatic fluctuations and has a high level of Leaf Spot tolerance. Tetraploids also germinate and grow in colder temperatures down to 40C and produce a stronger, deeper, denser root mass, increasing drought tolerance and tensile strength. The ability to perform in colder temperatures and survive periods of heat and drought makes tetraploids indispensable. Four cultivars are now available in the 100% tetraploid ryegrass blend 4Tetra, the fundamental choice for turf performance and recovery throughout the seasons. As with all the Rigby Taylor ‘R’ Range of grass seed mixture, 4Tetra seed is also Germin-8T treated. This

unique liquid, potent seed coating maximises seedling development and establishments. Containing a cocktail of specially penetrating surfactants, micro-nutrients and added mycorrhizae to supports plant health the addition of trichoderma viride provides a support package that protects against damaging turf diseases at their early stage of development.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

ABG’S BLUE ROOF DRAINAGE SYSTEM For urban developments with limited space or strict flood risk reduction planning conditions, installing a blue roof system within podium and roof-top areas is an increasingly popular solution. Blue roofs control rainwater at source and maximise the development’s available SuDS footprint, avoiding the need to excavate underground storage tanks that in city centre locations will typically involve difficult access and be expensive to install from a financial and carbon output point of view.

ABG blueroof system installed beneath PV panels at the Lily’s Walk development, High Wycombe

Blue roof drainage systems are also endorsed as the most effective SuDS technique available to local authority planners within ‘The SuDS Manual’ guidance, as published by CIRIA. By installing blue roof restrictor chamber and void former systems within podium deck and roof constructions, the volume of storm water that is released into rainwater outlets is controlled and the site’s maximum permitted discharge rate (as designated in the planning conditions) is not exceeded during storm events with periods of prolonged and intense rainfall.

or Flood Studies Report data for the site’s location), plus an additional 40% allowance for the effects of climate change typically detailed. Blue roofs are suitable for a variety of surface finishes; including extensive and biodiverse green roofs, paved and decking areas and for final usage applications

The blue roof system’s attenuation capacity is calculated to accommodate a 1:100 year storm duration event (as published in Flood Estimation Handbook

such as beneath podium amenity and trafficked areas, MUGAs and M&E plant and PV panel locations. When combined with a green roof surface finish (extensive or biodiverse), blue roofs make an important environmental contribution; including helping to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and reducing the urban heat island effect, filtration of rainwater pollutants, absorbing low frequency sounds and promoting new wildlife ecosystems and biodiversity.

ABG blueroof - Taking rainwater by storm ABG’s blueroof system attenuates and controls rainwater discharge at roof level, forming an integral element within the SuDS design on many modern developments – especially on tight urban sites.

The system’s restrictor chambers enable rainfall from storm events to be discharged at a controlled rate, to help meet the site’s SuDS planning requirements. Blue roof systems also appear at the top of ‘the SuDS hierarchy’ guidance for many planning bodies in the UK. ABG blueroof can be combined with multiple surface finishes and final area uses at both podium and roof level - including green roofs & biodiverse roofs, amenity terraces, plant areas and trafficked podium areas. ABG are a leading UK manufacturer, supplier and installer, and can provide a PI-insured design service based upon over 30 years of drainage and installation experience for sustainable green/blue infrastructure projects.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

COLLABORATION FOR SUCCESSFUL SUDS DESIGN Different disciplines working together from early planning is often a hot topic discussed within industry seminars and resources. However, as we all know actions speak louder than words. Two planning professional bodies that require a close working relationship from the outset are Drainage Engineers and

60

www.landud.co.uk

Landscape Architects as design work and strategy co-exist in the context of SuDS design. Water and Drainage Engineers have a thorough understanding of the connection between soil and water. Comparatively, the Landscape design focuses on creating key landmarks that look to achieve an aesthetic healthy environment for all who work and play within.

Landscape Architects have been educated to focus not only on the function but also on the look and feel how the community engage with a project. Placemaking is a key focus for landscape architecture. On the other hand, an Engineers’ training is to find the most efficient, cost-effective and functional solution to a problem.

necessary throughout every stage of a project, each detail, plan and design is as important as the next. It is vital that all parties must be willing to listen to other points of view and share the same end goal;

In the words of Anthony McCloy of McCloy Consultants, “Let’s avoid missed opportunities and have maximum benefits, producing high-performance infrastructure”. Let’s address the ultimate question; how can we adopt a mind-shift by allowing a multi-disciplinary way of working together? A paradigm shift in thinking leads to changes in practice The drainage system is an integral part of any structure, and before any architect plans are drawn and construction begins it is vital to look at the existing drains and potential natural SuDS features, dependant on the Topography. Therefore, respect and patience from all sectors are

Producing a realistic, functional, and high quality visually pleasing design, catering to the client’s wishes. Having an open mind and creative outlook on a scheme can shape a project to reach its full potential. This can only be achieved if all members of the design team are on-board with collaborative working on every phase of the project. A perfect example of a collaborative SuDS case study is All Saint’s Primary School in Newmarket, whereby Anglian Water worked directly with Atkins, West Suffolk County Council, Newmarket Town Council, fully engaging with parents, teachers, governors and of course pupils from the school. GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

THE CONCOURSE The regeneration of a 1970’s designed public open space located at the centre of the University’s campus, which has been underused, the scheme was to bring it back to life as a vibrant, social and meaningful space. Which has included over 3000m sq of new paving, a dynamic lighting scheme, bespoke seating and seasonal interest through the planting scheme.

62

www.landud.co.uk

Functioned for many years as a featureless thoroughfare, the public space connects the University buildings beneath the A57 / Western Bank road that passes on an overbridge through the campus. It was a space which people only passed through and the bridge under-croft was predominantly used for cycle parking.

The brief for the Concourse was to upgrade and improve the public realm of the area into a highquality scheme that complements the University’s Masterplan public realm works, the first phase of which has recently been completed. HLM Landscape were appointed to develop the initial Stage 2 concept design, into a viable scheme that can be designed and delivered to the aspirations of the University and within the project budget. Follow us @ludmagazine

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

The objectives set out in the brief, have been addressed through the design development of the scheme: • A design that is uncluttered and provides a flexible space, for a variety of users and functions that occur through the University’s academic year • Create an important civic space within the campus where people want to stay and socialise, that will provide an animated space during the day and at night • Create spaces that respond to user’s requirements – social, learning and quiet activities • Compliant and have a relationship with the Masterplan public realm • A design that respond to the buildings and functions around the Concourse • A lighting scheme that promotes use of the space, through the feeling of safety and security, whilst providing a dynamic night time streetscape Follow us @ludmagazine

• A scheme that focused on sustainability of materials HLM Landscape worked with lighting designers Arup to create a vibrant public realm scheme, which included lighting the A57 bridge, bespoke seating, manufacturered off site by Evans Concrete, with integrated lighting. The paving, a significant element of the scheme, was selected from Charcon for its sustainability credentials. A new external waste recycling strategy was introduced,

which has now been implemented to the wider campus. Corten was used for raised planters, introducing a contrast of materials in an urban environment. The planting was designed to respond to the site conditions, climate and aspect, providing seasonal impact which was previously lacking in the space.

LONDONERS ARE INVITED TO ENJOY NEWLY FURBISHED AND REVITALIZED PUBLIC SPACES A series of public realm interventions have been delivered across the Square Mile to support workers and visitors’ return and help bring the streets back to life. The City Public Realm team developed proposals to adapt streetscapes for the public benefit by introducing seating and greening measures. During the summer period 2020, as part of coordinated efforts relating

66

to the Covid 19 pandemic, the City implemented a range of strategies to provide more space for people walking and cycling and respond to the need for physical distancing. The project entails using various typologies of street furniture to respond to the constraints and requirements of each site and offers a high degree of flexibility should further adaptation be desired.

“This is a great initiative that has transformed the use of streets spaces in the City and which will help to inform long term solutions to deliver a positive urban environment, welcoming the revive of city life, when it is safe to do so” Maria Herrera – Senior Project Manager, City Public Realm, Department of the Built Environment, City of London Corporation.

STREET FURNITURE Proving that streets can blossom before the spring, new furniture by mmcité comes in vibrant colours. Thoroughly selected benches rejuvenate the streets and public areas, taking into account all users and passers-by. Good design isn’t for a gallery it is for life. In the West Smithfield area, colours go even further and the new carriageway paint and bright tree planters highlights the area’s Culture Mile – a partnership of five leading UK arts, culture and learning institutions led by the Corporation of London, with the Barbican, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, London Symphony Orchestra and Museum of London. Culture Mile aims to create a major destination for creativity, innovation and learning in the heart of London’s financial district stretching just under a mile from Farringdon to Moorgate in the north-west corner of the Square Mile.

Vera benches are showing that advanced modern design does not always mean a high price. Durability and strength are combined with the purity of shape and remarkable visual lightness. mmcité is not only a supplier of high-quality street furniture but also a partner to all those who want to create something special within public spaces. For more than twenty-five years the Czech based design brand has earned a great reputation for its excellent designs for the public realm. “Our furniture offers all citizens fine quality and influences their taste without any exclusivity.” says David Karásek, leading designer and coowner of mmcité. “We were proud of helping The City of London to bring the streets back to life and are excited to see peoples reaction to the result,” he adds.

Playful Blocq seats fit perfectly to this design. A massive block placed on sharp points was designed to contract soundly and attract attention in the public space. STREETS AHEAD As we all begin to adapt to the longlasting affects the pandemic will have on our family relationships, social lives, workplaces and retail environments, all tentatively walking out of home-based exile blinking into the sun, there’s a new and adapting urban environment waiting for us all. “Adapt yourself to the needs of the people” - Sunday Adelaja With the UK Government pledging billions for changes in infrastructure and aiming to improve social distancing on public transport, schemes such as ‘Cycle to Work’ surging the numbers of sole commuters on the roads, and pedestrian traffic increasing as walking becomes the easiest method

68

www.landud.co.uk

to ensure Covid safety, our streets need to adapt to deliver the ‘new normal’. Our heavily built-up streets often mean the available pavement space for socially distant pedestrian traffic is limited and needs adapting to use every inch to it’s fullest, so the way the public is interfacing with the environment is facing a radical change. Street furniture has a privileged role to play, it shapes our society and our interaction with the world, it’s a presence in every town centre, every park, every beauty spot and tourist attraction, and can truly shape the character of a destination along with meeting the varying and unique practical demands of each location. Signage, seating, litter bins, cycle

parking, will need to combine to reduce their footprints, removing clutter from our streets, the capability to design this way has always existed, and now we have the support and funding to make it happen. “Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.” — Pauline R. Kezer Some manufacturers are already accustomed to adapting their furniture to changes in design, materials and environment, and Woodscape are excited to be working with architects across the country on adapting designs and projects to best suit their communities developing needs.

STREET FURNITURE For those locations in need of ‘off the shelf’ style solutions, we’re creating customisations to our standard range, such as this Lincoln shelter that brings together covered seating and cycle storage in one. Many of our customers have limited available space to work with, they must meet the changing and uncertain future demands of pedestrians and cyclists alike without having additional space to fit cycle racks. A limited budget may also force a choice between seating or cycle parking. With this in mind Woodscape have developed options for their standard range, such as the Type 6 Cycle Bench.

With no increase in footprint from a standard Type 6, the Type 6 Cycle Bench can be used for casual cycle storage at either end, while remaining usable for seating in the middle. With no cycles in place, 2 people can easily sit and maintain social distance. It’s particularly well suited for rural locations where seating is being upgraded on existing restricted groundwork, so no need to expand your project scope or budget.

at a time when there are so many other challenges affecting the construction industry. However, our public spaces have never before been so much in the spotlight, so desperate to be well managed, well equipped and utilised safely, and respect for those needs can offer an

opportunity the like of which may not see again for some time. Let’s take this opportunity, and develop it into a chance to make our public spaces the dream environment we’ve always known them to be.

“The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings.” — Kakuzõ Okakura Making these adaptions in the way we work, and the products we offer, could be seen as an inconvenience, another challenge to be overcome

DELIVERING A GREAT OUTDOORS FIT FOR TODAY’S WORLD Covid has led many of us to reevaluate our relationship with the outdoors. Isolation and social distancing measures which have limited what we can do outside of homes and workplaces has resulted in many regarding an hour per day outdoors for exercise as a godsend. There has been a renewed appetite for people to spend as much time as possible in outdoor public spaces. Parks, cafes and high streets with facilities to gather, sit and exercise were busier than previous years throughout 2020’s summer months even when indoor socialising was permitted.

We are constantly hearing about the decline of bricks and mortar retailing. The pandemic may have accelerated what was a relatively gradual trend of shrinkage, but the future offers hope for physical stores.

So how do we ensure our outdoor spaces are designed and equipped in a way that further enhances their value and potential, and supports more people wanting to enjoy the great outdoors?

We’ve already seen streets reconfigured with wider pavements, and others made completely pedestrianised, so more people can use the high street whilst feeling safe and not crowded. Social distancing in public spaces, whether enforced or by choice, will live long into the future. But rather than this presenting challenges, it offers opportunity with huge scope to get creative in order to provide the facilities and services that will keep people coming back.

Re-invigorating town and city centres The way we engage with outdoor spaces in the UK is always changing. More recently, café culture has boomed in the past 20 years which means we’re now well-accustomed to sitting at tables on the pavements or courtyards outside coffee shops and restaurants – even when the weather isn’t so great.

70

www.landud.co.uk

One post-pandemic theory is that we might see a more people-friendly public realm around places where we congregate to shop, eat and socialise. The traditional retail hook of high streets – the major stores like Marks & Spencer and John Lewis – will no longer be so important as independents return and thrive.

A collaborative approach to the public realm Bailey Street Furniture Group’s

‘creating outdoor spaces together’ ethos perfectly encapsulates how we can get the best results in urban renovations and new development projects. Through collaboration and knowledge-sharing design ideas and innovation can be brought to fruition with the right products and solutions. It follows a simple vision – to build a better world by creating stimulating and functional outdoor spaces, that allow us to thrive and enhance our everyday lives. Whether it is outdoor seating, planters, litter bins, shelters, cycle stands, displays, play equipment or gyms, the design potential for our streets, courtyards and plazas is almost unlimited. But to get the best results, it is worth taking a step back and considering how these solutions can best be deployed to meet the needs and preferences of end-users.

TODAY’S KEY GOALS FOR PUBLIC REALM DESIGN Creating sustainable communities With the urgent need to address climate change, every landscaping and urban design scheme has to be built around sustainable design

principles, but how can these goals be elevated to better fit with the circular economy? Sustainable manufacturing and raw materials should be at the forefront of decisions about street furniture and other streetscape elements. Using only timber from sustainable sources and manufacturing in a resource-efficient way, with recycling and waste reduction maximised, is a given. But we must also look towards material innovations, including composite and processed wood products like Thermowoods, which may offer more tangible carbon savings of the life cycle.

Every product specification needs to consider cradle-to-grave thinking – what impact do materials, processes and applications have on our resources and environment? Alternative material choices for an element of street furniture could make a significant difference, such as choosing aluminium over galvanised steel. Design which encourages more sustainable behaviour should also be key. A prime example is cycling, in which there has been a growth in the popularity since the start of the pandemic. Public spaces in towns and cities of the future, therefore, as well as any local high street, public building or large workplace, should

feature appropriate cycle racks and shelters. After all, anyone making the switch to a cycle commute or weekly visit to the city centre will be encouraged to continue doing so if they can be confident there is somewhere to park their cycle safely and securely. Designing streetscapes to include more planters and trees will also encourage biodiversity which is so crucial in urban environments, and assist with rainwater management. These small steps are not only beneficial from an environmental perspective but having more greenery can also have a positive impact on people’s mental wellbeing.

Security and anti-terrorism Given the continued terrorism threats we face, our public spaces must be designed to be resilient, but that needn’t mean deploying crude devices such as utilitarian barriers or concrete blocks which often compromise aesthetics and lessen the appeal of urban landscapes. Engineering and design innovation allows us to integrate hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) barriers into our streetscapes and plazas almost unnoticed in the form of planters, seating and other elements. Inspira Protect, for example, is an IWA rated modular retaining wall system, which is perfect for creating visually appealing raised planting schemes in any location.

From the reinforced modular panels and increased supports, to fully welded reinforced corner sections and shallow mount foundations, Inspira Protect’s engineered qualities deliver a robust solution that is both practical and flexible.

The connected world Technology ‘s role in our daily lives is only set to increase. But being outdoors should not mean becoming disconnected, and if fact with the latest innovations in street furniture the reverse is the case – we can actually be assisted throughout our day in new and inventive ways. Developments in smart technology are supporting the growth in the use of personal e-scooters and e-bikes, which demand an effective infrastructure to make them a viable option for low carbon urban transport. Smart parking and charging stations already link to smart-phone apps already give users the vital information they need on availability and pick-up/drop-off locations, but that is just the start.

Smart shelters can be integrated into public spaces to give instant access to support services or important public information such as severe weather alerts 24/7, and smart benches offer users facilities such as wireless or USB charging for their phones and a WIFI hotspot – all solar powered. And then there are numerous options for smart car parking, such as where drivers can be notified in real time where their nearest parking space is located, saving time and fuel.

Linear, Form and Bespoke – suit every design goal and are available in a wide variety of materials, finishes and sizes. Its ease of installation also makes it a quick and cost-effective addition to street, courtyard and roof terrace developments – perfect for urban areas, retail parks, residential complexes and educational facilities.

All these smart technologies can be brought to fruition using street furniture that incorporates the devices needed to build a network. Anything is possible with the range of solutions available from Bailey Street Furniture Group, including Artform Urban’s Plateau SunHub picnic table, which incorporates charging points and lighting, plus bespoke solutions through the company’s internationallyrenowned smart city partners.

Superb aesthetics Street furniture has come a long way in the last 20 years. Today both the Bailey Streetscene and Artform Urban ranges offer products that enable architects, landscape designers and clients to create visually stunning outdoor spaces, with elements such as litter bins, seating and planters adding to the aesthetic whether contemporary or traditional in tone. Take the Inspira modular planting system. This modular retaining wall system makes creating raised planting schemes in any location easy, complemented by matching seating. Inspira’s three ranges –

STREET FURNITURE About Bailey Street Furniture Group

Taking the office or classroom outside Whilst all parts of the UK may not have a year-round climate that makes outdoor working and learning practical all of the time, the pandemic has encouraged more of us to try these activities outdoors as much as we can. Equipping spaces practically is important to make this possible, not least with canopies that are fit for purpose. As experts in canopy and walkway design, manufacture and installation, Bailey Street Furniture Group is ideally positioned to help bring new purpose to outdoor spaces. Sheltered from the elements with fixed or movable seating and tables, a courtyard, for example, can become a functional learning or work space. Bailey Street Furniture Group will help you get the local wind and snow loadings correct, of course, and with a wide variety of design options available including bespoke solutions, an additional outdoor resource is easily within reach.

Accessibility and inclusivity Urban design and streetscapes are being transformed in terms of their accessibility for all, driven by the more stringent requirements of the bolstered Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). This is something every urban designer or client will have at the top of their agenda, ensuring there is no risk of excluding anyone from enjoying a public space regardless of their disability or impairment.

This is an area where Bailey Street Furniture Group can help. Its street furniture design support and wide range of products helps designers maintain their design intent and vision whilst optimising accessibility. Take the Plateau I bench, for example, which offers a clean design with open ended spaces to accommodate wheelchairs at either end for a DDA-compliant, long term outdoor seating solution.

Sports and play equipment Where space allows, why not consider developing an outdoor space with equipment for sporting activity or play? Solutions available from Bailey’s AMV Playgrounds division provides expertise in all aspects of design for play in the public realm, including trim trails and table tennis, plus more comprehensive facilities including multi-use games areas (MUGAs). This approach is all about making fitness fun and making sure these activities can be provided outdoors as much as possible

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

MODERN METHODS OF PAVING Modular concrete paving meets today’s Modern Methods of Construction ethos for engineered and prefabricated products, and the increasing use of efficient, fully mechanised site processes enhances its benefits, as the trade association Interpave explains. Modular concrete block and flag paving offers proven longterm performance, durability and minimal maintenance while offering endless variety in shape, scale, colour and texture. In terms of design, distinct modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape, give precast paving visual interest and a human scale not possible with formless materials. A wide choice of colours is available from Interpave members – ranging from vibrant to muted tones, as well as varied mixes of colours that can emulate other materials such as stone or clay. Surface treatments

74

www.landud.co.uk

can also be applied to paving blocks, flags, kerbs and other products to give different textures, some exposing aggregates and others giving a weathered appearance.

Numerous Paving Styles In addition, different shapes and sizes, ranging from large flags to the smaller paving blocks, give the diversity needed to suit the particular scales of different spaces. Despite the huge choice, modular concrete paved surfaces give consistent frictional characteristics and joint widths ensuring safety and ease of use by the whole community. All these attributes combine to enable designers to select paving styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, giving each area its own special character. The technology’s potential is expanded further with concrete block permeable paving, a uniquely flexible SuDS (sustainable drainage systems) technique. It provides

an inherent drainage system that requires no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance, and offers the same visual richness as conventional block paving. It also addresses both flooding and pollution issues by storing and cleaning water runoff at source. This technology eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes, and should therefore cost less than conventional drainage and paving.

SuDS Webinar A new CPD webinar – presented by Bob Bray of Robert Bray Associates, with over 20-years’ experience in SuDS and landscape design – explores how straightforward flow controls can optimise permeable paving and SuDS. It covers techniques including water storage in paving compartments deployed around a site, to integrate SuDS within development and avoid landtake. The webinar can be viewed at www.paving.org.uk/optimisingpermeable-paving

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

Whether conventional or permeable, concrete block paving is particularly suited to well-established mechanised installation techniques. In essence, a hydraulically operated clamping system is used to lift a ‘cluster’ of concrete paving blocks – generally around 1 square metre in area and already in the required laying pattern. Clamps can be fitted to a variety of site equipment or form an integral part of dedicated machines designed for good site manoeuvrability.

Increased Productivity All kinds of block shapes and styles, including standard rectangular, can be machine laid in various patterns including herringbone which some manufacturers offer ready for machine laying. Productivity is comparable with asphalting operations and the ability to deploy a block laying machine and crew at short notice to meet ‘just in time’ demands on sizeable projects is a major advantage. But there are benefits in using the technology on modest sized projects, as well as major schemes. Faster installation means earlier completion and less operational downtime of the paved area – not forgetting that block paving can be used immediately after completion without curing times. Machine installation also makes it easier to achieve consistent accuracy and uniform joint widths. It is less tiring for operatives and also enables social distancing measures to be maintained on site. To maximise these efficiencies, installation

Follow us @ludmagazine

contractors are adopting a similar mechanised approach to all site processes.

Safety and Efficiency The same concept can be applied to other precast concrete paving products to improve safety as well as efficiency. Concrete kerbs have been in use for around 70 years and concrete flag paving for even longer. Regulations have been in place for some time to protect workers from risks associated with musculoskeletal and upper limb disorders resulting from manual lifting and installation of these products. Elimination of manual lifting should be considered at the design stage so that kerbs and flags are always handled and laid mechanically using vacuum lifting gear, mechanical grabs or similar devices. Another area where safety measures offer other cost and efficiency benefits is the elimination of cutting concrete paving products. Silica is a natural component found in many construction products: crystalline silica is found in sand, sandstone, granite and concrete. Health hazards can result from breathing in the fine dust of crystalline silica. But this risk can be eliminated when installing precast concrete paving blocks, flags and kerbs – either by removing the need to cut concrete products through careful design or by utilising safer cutting practices and equipment.

Modular by Nature It is important to remember that the key to attractive, durable, costeffective precast concrete paving is to optimise its modular nature, by dimensioning areas to minimise cutting and combining compatible products to avoid it. There are numerous techniques and special products readily available to help with this, as well as different styles of precast concrete kerbs, channels and other components. Consideration of all the product alternatives and sizes available at the design stage, and careful setting out can generate real efficiencies and eliminate the need for cutting. As with any construction operation, the devil is in the detail – with edges, insertions, level changes and junctions within paving, which should not just be left to onsite operatives but resolved off-site within the design.

A guidance document on the detailed design and installation of modular concrete paving has just been published by Interpave, readily available – together with other guidelines and case studies – via: www.paving.org.uk www.landud.co.uk

MARGRAF MARBLE IN PUBLIC WORKS

LIPICA FIORITO ADORNS A NEW PEDESTRIAN SUBWAY ON VIALE CECCARINI IN RICCIONE (NEAR RIMINI) Marble is a natural material that can add a “magical” touch to any setting when it is expertly quarried and processed by skilful hands. Thanks to its unique qualities, Margraf Lipica Fiorito frost-resistant marble with a non-slip flamed finish was selected by architect Fabio Mariani as a prestigious paving material for a new, extended pedestrian subway in Riccione, near Rimini. It links the stretch of Viale Ceccarini by the sea with the road of

76

www.landud.co.uk

the same name that leads into the old part of town. The project involves an area of approximately 1,000 m², some of which is underground. This increases to approximately 1,500 m² when renovation work on an existing section is taken into account. The subway has an overall length of approximately 90 m, from the wall at the top of the new area to the end of the existing ramp on the stretch of Viale Ceccarini by the sea.

It brings together a number of different features in a single technical, distributive and architectural ensemble, thus creating a pleasant, practical location that complements and enhances the existing surroundings (Viale Ceccarini and a park).

Design concept Like a bridge, the subway links and unites. It combines its practical purpose with a symbolic side.

CONCRETE & STONEWORK

As an underground structure, it has the potential to be even more evocative than a bridge. The notion of being “underneath” has numerous connotations in religion, literature and psychology. The architect and his team took inspiration from these ideas and transformed the subway from an anonymous passage into a topos, in the Aristotelian sense of the term.

- The paving is made of frostresistant Margraf Lipica Fiorito marble featuring a non-slip flamed finish and a suitable thickness for the use in question (approximately 3 cm for the pedestrian areas). The slabs are laid in a “free-length” pattern with strips of various sizes, thus optimizing the use of materials and reducing waste.

Technical details

Architectural rhetoric and assonance conjure up images of the history of Riccione. The designer’s goal was to produce a concerted work that engages and represents the town as a whole, with a special part being played by cultural associations, artists and accomplished artisans.

- Other walls were made of “exposed” reinforced concrete using wooden boards of the same size as the planking seen elsewhere, thus drawing on the post-war traditions of the local master carpenters.

Paving made of frost-resistant Lipica Fiorito grey marble, featuring small, whitish veins, fossil remains of varying degrees of visibility, a non-slip flamed finish and a suitable thickness for the use in question (approximately 3 cm for the pedestrian areas). The slabs are laid in a “free-length” pattern with strips of various sizes, thus optimizing the use of materials and reducing waste. Amount: 1,000 m²

For instance: - Some of the walls are covered with wood, as part of a design inspired by planks on boats. Consequently, it feels like you are entering a ship rather than a subway.

LIGHTING

2021: SOLAR LIGHTING SUPPLIER SHINING BRIGHT IN THE U.K. 1) Brightness

Two years ago, Northamptonshire outdoor lighting specialists Lumena, set out to provide products that previously seemed non-workable in the UK lighting market; reliable residential commercial Solar lights that function well in U.K weather all year round. Lumena’s ongoing focus has always been innovation, quality, and sustainable product design. Qualities currently revolutionising the concept of solar lighting in a world where renewable energy and environmental awareness are increasingly important. Zero Emissions, Zero Running costs, Low Installation Cost were benefits simply too important for Lumena to ignore. The problem with applying these benefits to the range was that low power, short lasting, dull and cheap plastic models of the past had given people in the UK a negative view of solar lights. Although people were attracted by the idea that effective outdoor lighting didn’t have to be mains powered (240v), the world-renowned dull English weather simply increased the doubt in solar! Nevertheless, the challenge to improve and supply superior solar lights had begun…

As mentioned, older solar lights were hugely disappointing where light output was concerned. Lumena’s years of experience with LED lamps across other ranges made sure of impressive brightness and high Lumens output. After all, these lights are meant to illuminate mainly to give safe access, especially where mains cabling can’t reach. Most lights in the range are at minimum 100 lumens per watt which is considered a decent brightness for LED across the board. The solar floodlights, ‘Lumelux’ are equally as bright as some mains floodlights and Sol-Icon solar bollard boasts a massive 2000 lumens. Products use high quality, very long life LEDs such as Epistar in warm or daylight white.

2) Build quality & design If all tech. components are built to last, then the main product body has to be durable and sustainable. That’s why the solar path lights are die cast aluminium and have been impact tested to obtain high IK ratings. The Litecharga and vandal resistant Guarda (pictured) have the highest rating of IK10 with tough polycarbonate diffusers too. Eccentrica and Halopost bollards have a smart contemporary look and provide glare free elegant light. The ‘Hi-Way’ PIR wall light is versatile enough to be mounted on the wall, or fix to a taller post for amazing LED illumination of approx. 1500 lumens. Many designs have many different installation options – another benefit of solar lights.

3) Batteries and panels So how has Solar lighting been improved within the Pro Solar range? Four main aspects had to be tried and tested, to be able to offer Solar lights with a 5 year guarantee.

78

www.landud.co.uk

One way to spot solar lights suitable for professional use is if they incorporate high capacity Life PO4 lithium or li-ion batteries and use efficient, modern polycrystalline or monocrystalline solar panels so that

optimum charge levels are retained for longer. Charge is preserved very effectively even in lower light levels, therefore illuminating the light for longer.

4) Charging capacity and functions for the UK all year round This was the most important factor. There would’ve been no point in getting the other aspects right and then the lights constantly failing in lower light levels during darker months. All Lumena solar path lights have special time controllers to match the UK climate. When darkness falls, path lights illuminate at full brightness, and then follow a gradual dimming sequence until they reach 30% brightness after 5 hours. From then on it will remain at 30% until dawn or until charge is used up. Even in the dullest of weather, our solar lights will still illuminate, although they may not last the entire night cycle on very long, dark days. PIR motion sensor solar lights all have charge saving functions where, for example, a low level light illuminates constantly at dusk then a brighter light appears when the sensor is triggered. Lumena are so confident in the lights’ performance, they offer a substantial 5 year guarantee. The Pro Solar lights have been very well received and are functioning well in commercial locations even during the Winter months. They are developing the brand more in 2021 with the ViaMax range with lights designed for larger spaces such as street walkways, hotels, parks and larger business premises.

EXPERT ADVICE FROM MARKETA RYPACEK,

MANAGING DIRECTOR, INDUSTVILLE LTD With the popular trend of creating a seamless flow from your home to your garden, outdoor lighting is now an important consideration in creating this look. Gone are the days when the choices for garden lighting were limited to plain, uninteresting white security type lighting, today’s modern designs are just as stylish and varied as those you would find inside the home. Our waterproof lighting collection was developed to satisfy our customers’ desire for outdoor lighting that’s not only visually appealing but that also adheres to the strict IP regulations. We found with a lot of other outdoor lights on the market, the design was affected by the technical requirements, making them functional but not very attractive. Vintage outdoor lighting was also in very short supply and a gap we were keen to fill. We quickly found that by using materials that don’t rust, such as copper and brass, we could develop a range that’s both on-trend in terms of the design and is also protected against the weather. When thinking about purchasing outdoor lighting it is a good idea to consider the size of your outdoor

80

www.landud.co.uk

space and the purpose of the lighting. If, for example, you need to illuminate a path to help people stay safe, task lighting is a good option, where as something more subtle could be used to add ambience for outdoor dining. Consider the style of your property. Whether your home and garden is contemporary or traditional in character, our decorative outdoor lighting is designed to be versatile and suits all styles, helping to further enhance the look of the property. When done well, outdoor lighting can be used to accentuate your home and make the elements you really love stand out. Outdoor lighting also has the added advantage of deterring unwanted intruders and you will also find a wide range of functional and motion activated solutions on the market. Our Swan Neck wall lights are a very popular choice and look great when used either side of a front door. For those wanting a more industrial style look, our Bulkhead lights are another favourite, as well as our Brooklyn wall lights which are perfect for a simple, elegant look.

Industville Garden Brooklyn Outdoor & Bathroom Dome Wall Light - 8 Inch - Pewter & Copper Brooklyn Dome Wall Light is now available for outside use, allowing you to transform the exterior of your home. Industville industrial outdoor Lights are rated IP20, IP44 & IP65, making them a durable option that can withstand the elements. Image credit: @nicbissekerphotography and @veryvictorianmerebrook

THREE DECK UPGRADES THAT OPTIMIZE PROJECT POTENTIAL, PERFORMANCE AND PROFITS

BY: SIMON THOMAS, TREXPRO AND OWNER OF SIMON THOMAS DECK & DESIGN

2021 should be declared “the year of the garden!” As Brits continue to spend more time at home, space is at a premium, inspiring homeowners to look outside for an escape and some extra elbow room. If your business is anything like mine, your project calendar is likely filling up for the season, if not already booked out. Since quantity of jobs should not be an issue this year, why not focus on quality and making the most of the projects you have lined up? With homeowners more willing than ever to invest in their outdoor spaces, be sure to optimize opportunities to sell them simple upgrades that will add function and value to their decks without adding a lot of time or cost. Here are three easy and costeffective add-ons that I suggest to all of my clients:

1. Deck Flashing Tape Today’s homeowners have access to high-performance garden decking warrantied to last for decades. But research* has shown that most decking substructures begin to show signs of decay within the first 8-10 years. This is because the majority of substructures are built using timber, which is susceptible to damage from moisture and exposure to outdoor elements. Easily one of wood’s worst enemies, moisture contributes to mould growth and can accelerate structural deterioration. This is particularly common in the U.K. given our perennially damp and rainy climate. When joists and bearers are exposed, water can seep into screw

holes and sit on the wood causing it to rot and the screws to rust. Additionally, the natural expansion and contraction of wood due to seasonal freezing and thawing can cause beams to split and weaken over time, posing serious safety concerns. Deck flashing tape is a simple and inexpensive way to protect wood from the damaging effects of weather and time. Designed to shield the tops of timber joists, bearers and ledger boards from water damage, it also acts as a moisture barrier between wood and galvanized metal to help deck screws and fasteners hold longer and stronger for enhanced structural integrity.

DECKING

to fully optimize a deck project is by installing an under-deck drainage system. When protected from the elements, the often overlooked area beneath an elevated deck can become a perfect spot for an al fresco conference call, mid-day playtime for at-home students or an open-air yoga session.

My go-to product is Trex® Protect™ Joist and Bearer Tape. I use it on every deck I build – no matter the size, design or decking material I use – because I want my work to last. It’s a self-adhesive butyl tape engineered specifically for use on decks. It works on both horizontal and vertical surfaces and is applied as a “cap” (vs. wrapping) to allow the timber to breathe. The peel-andstick tape lies directly on the boards and requires minimal cuts and little overlap making application a breeze. Furthermore, the butyl adhesive is super sticky, yet pliable, which

Follow us @ludmagazine

allows it to create a tight seal around fasteners to prevent water from infiltrating screw holes. It doesn’t dry out or curl up like other construction tapes and performs extremely well in a wide range of temperatures. Trex Protect tape also features a non-skid surface, making it easy and safe to walk across during construction.

2. An Under-Deck Drainage System As our homes have become offices, classrooms, fitness facilities – you name it – space has become a precious commodity. One easy way

Using a network of troughs and downspouts, an under-deck drainage system captures and diverts water away from a deck, not only preserving the studwork but also making the area under the deck useable for storage or as additional living space. Once protected, that space can be used for stowing lawn and garden equipment, pool supplies, bicycles and boats, or outfitted with furnishings, lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and entertainment components to serve as an outdoor room. There are two main types of drainage systems – those that install above or below the joists of the substructure. For optimal protection and aesthetics, I prefer an “abovethe-joist” system, such as Trex® RainEscape®. The main advantage to this type of system is that it protects the entire foundation and the area beneath the deck. It also allows homeowners to put any kind of decorative ceiling or soffit on the underside of the joists, making it a good option for customers who want a completely finished look.

Trex RainEscape is easy and efficient to install – whether during a new deck build or when replacing existing deck boards. The entire system includes just five SKUs – a 40cm and 30cm drainage trough sheet, a downspout,

butyl waterproof caulk and butyl waterproof tape. Additionally, only three tools – scissors or a utility knife, a staple gun hammer and a caulk gun – are needed for installation. Each trough is clearly labeled with staple markers to

expedite the process, which takes no more than a few hours to complete. And, the system is backed by a 20-year warranty from Trex® – the world’s #1 decking brand.

DECKING 3. Deck Lighting Another “bright” idea for adding value to a deck project is with lighting. Dimmable LED lights incorporated into railing post caps and stair risers can increase safety

while also enhancing ambiance and extending the time that homeowners can spend enjoying their outdoor space. And don’t forget to illuminate the space beneath the deck with soffit lights.

The makers of Trex RainEscape offer plug-and-play lighting components that integrate seamlessly with the drainage system and with other Trex Outdoor Lighting components.

While these add-ons may seem minor, they can have a major impact on customer satisfaction and your bottom line – especially during a season as busy as this one promises to be.

Nature enhanced, for unreal results. Every now and then, something comes along to knock an original off its pedestal. Welcome then to Millboard decking. Through continuous research and development, meticulous attention to detail, expertise and innovation we’ve created a board that’s handmoulded from natural wood – and we think it could be better than the real thing. It won’t rot like real wood, warp like real wood or attract mould like real wood. It just takes the best of real wood and enhances it. Beautifully. Millboard: Live. Life. Outside. DECKING

THE AUTHENTIC LOOK OF WOOD, BUT WITHOUT THE DISADVANTAGES With horizons severely limited by lockdowns and other restrictions, the boom in home and garden improvements has been quite understandable. Everyone wants to make the most of whatever space they have available. That especially includes gardens, which have become outdoor refuges for many while other options have been out of reach.

92

www.landud.co.uk

One way of maximising enjoyment of outside space is to create an outdoor ‘room’: no walls or ceiling involved but, as much as any room in the house, a place to spend quality time. Traditionally, the base for such a room would have been a brick, stone or concrete patio, but in recent years wooden decks have become the first choice, as people opt for a more natural look.

However, wooden decks have their drawbacks. They can crack and split if not maintained correctly. They also tend to get very slippery in the wet, especially if any areas are affected by algae. It was to overcome these problems, while still providing an authentic wood look, that Millboard decking was developed.

Follow us @ludmagazine

DECKING

First and foremost, it looks the part. In fact, unless you knew better, you would assume it was natural wood. It has the same fine grain as real wood, because it is made in moulds created from carefully selected oak timbers, with all the characteristic detail that oak possesses. Whether it’s the deeper textured ‘Weathered Oak’ or the smoother ‘Enhanced Grain’ style, the authentic wood look is amazing. Used in many public spaces across the UK, from Kew Gardens to stately homes and fancy restaurants, you may well have walked on Millboard decking and never even realised that it wasn’t wood! But, while it looks exactly like wood, it doesn’t rot, split or warp. Millboard is made of a combination of natural minerals and polymers that provide an incredibly strong, durable material. It takes a minimum of fuss to look after, too. It doesn’t rot, and there’s nothing for insects or algae to live on. There’s no need to paint or apply preservatives – all that is needed to clean a Millboard deck is a quick going over with soapy water. This is thanks to each board having a unique Lastane impermeable layer. If you spill some wine, it doesn’t sink in, so you can just wipe it away and no harm done.

Follow us @ludmagazine

As well as being easy-clean, the Lastane surface has another property which may be the only way you’ll be able to tell Millboard and wood decking apart – it is highly slip-resistant. In the wet, wood can be horribly slippery, but Millboard decking is anything but. (This is one of the reasons it has been so popular in public areas with high footfall – no health and safety issues to worry about!) One final trick up the Lastane layer’s sleeve is its self-sealing property. This means that when installed using Millboard recommended fittings, all screw heads are covered by the surface resealing itself over them for a wonderfully professional ‘lost-head’ finish. Installation generally is straightforward – Millboard decking can be sawn and cut just like wood, so no special tools are required. Alongside the decking boards themselves, Millboard offers a complete system including sub-frame systems and edging. It’s perfectly possible for competent DIY-ers to install the system themselves, but most choose to use installers approved by Millboard themselves. Millboard has managed to provide a solution to the problem of beautiful decking without the

hassle and without compromising the environment. Sustainability has always been part of Millboard’s ethos, and they were the first premium decking company to obtain UKAS-certified approval to the global environmental standard ISO 14064. Produced entirely in the UK, no tropical hardwood forests are depleted and transportation costs and environmental impacts are far lower than for imported products. Much of the material used in manufacture is derived from the waste of other processes, and Millboard decking itself can be recycled into polyutherane filler to be used in other manufacturing. Millboard provides a useful calculator on their website for professional designers, architects or self-builders to work out what amount of decking and other materials will be required for any given project. Samples of the different styles and colours available can also be ordered online. As a practical, all-weather base for spending more time outdoors without leaving home, Millboard decking is hard to beat. It’s the perfect solution for those wanting to – as the company’s slogan puts it – ‘Live. Life. Outside.’

Most members of our small team of 18 have more than 10 years’ service with the company, many have 20+ years. We are a global supplier, priding ourselves in our high-quality customer service & products. In 2018, Tayplay became part of the Playpower/ HAGS group. 96

www.landud.co.uk

Our most recent high-profile custom build was for the newly refurbished Planet Play at The Kennedy Space Center visitor complex. The home of NASA! Our specialist team worked on the design & production of the rope net elements throughout the play space. Andrew Little, our lead designer, collaborated with PlayPower and other partners to create several custom net designs with a very strict colour & design brief. The multiple nets were designed and produced in Perth, with the installation being completed on time. Andrew worked exclusively from the brief, without needing to visit the site; no mean feat for a project so technical in layout, & which included such challenging design elements, & unusual shapes. Needless to say, it all fitted perfectly. Children are already reaching for outer space within the new play zone! They can climb on the Vortex Floor Net, which has over 201 unique rope

lengths, along with 5000 individual marks (including end fixings, allowances, and markdowns), 1977 cross joints/connectors - total project used: 6116 cross joints/connectors. Great fun is also to be had in the deep space of the 7 metre long Blackhole, & 7 metre high Pluto & Mars tunnels too. Tayplay’s nets provide children with real life experiences, in an exciting, yet safe & controlled environment. Climbing helps develop their spatial awareness, cognitive & motor skills. The challenges also support problem solving skills, within the context of safe imaginative play. Whatever your customer’s expectations, TAYPLAY can take their concept from the drawing board to the playground.
