New sustainable and environmental solutions D

LF Seeds pride themselves on consistently improving and setting the standard for grass seed excellence, and their mixtures for 2022 will be no different. A stop by stand 270 in the Red Zone at BTME, will give visitors the first chance to hear about the new sustainable and environmental solutions that will change the way that professional turf managers will tackle some of today’s biggest challenges. The shift in weather patterns combined with changing management models of maintenance and plant nutrition are largely believed to be the triggers for an increase in the occurrence of some turf diseases, particularly the rise in reported instances of Brown Patch. Over the last

6

two years, and utilising their global research network, DLF have been leading the field with a screening programme for Brown Patch which has identified the tolerance of DLF’s 4Turf® varieties. The results of the study have therefore formed the foundation of a number of new formulations across the Johnsons Sports Seed fine turf and sports turf ranges – including J Premier 4Turf - a brand new mixture for 2022 which will be the first of its kind to offer proven Brown Patch tolerance for winter sports pitches. For golf, a number of popular

mixtures have been reformulated including J Fairway which features the new salt tolerant Esparina chewings fescue and J Rye Fairway which has been updated to include the new highly rated, perennial ryegrass Aniston. All of the changes will be outlined in the brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed brochure, which can be found on the stand alongside two new brochures dedicated to the recently expanded DLF Wildflower collections. In order to meet with the increasing demand for sustainability and conservation areas, a number of mixtures have been added to both the ProFlora native wildflower and Colour Boost high impact wildflower ranges. www.dlf.co.uk

Shining a light on water management

U

nderstanding how carefully managed moisture levels can play a significant role in the reduction of some common turf diseases, Headland Amenity will be shining a spotlight on their range of water management products - including TeraFirm, DewCure and TriCure AD - at BTME 2022. The Headland technical team will be on hand to discuss this, alongside their full range of plant nutrition products for golf and sports turf on the Origin Amenity Solutions stand – Purple 424. Maintaining optimum water-soil balance in both wet and dry periods of the season is a key principle in the overall approach to retaining plant health. Terafirm is a soil penetrant formulated to improve the

downward movement of water through the soil, helping to achieve a fasterdraining, firmer and healthier surface. Its unique non-phytoxic formulation reduces the surface tension of water, minimising lateral water movement and maximising drainage. Terafirm also acts to quicken surface drying and open up pore space within the soil during dry down by accelerating natural soil contraction. Through the formation of a waterresistant, rainfast coating on the plants surface, Headland’s DewCure™ has also demonstrated considerable success in reducing leaf surface moisture. With the activity of damaging foliar diseases like Microdochium nivale and Dollar Spot positively linked with conditions conducive to high leaf moisture, utilising

DewCure™ to control dew and guttation fluid can help to suppress disease activity. Looking further ahead, TriCure AD is known as a highly effective wetting agent used to combat hydrophobic conditions on fine turf. With application rates adjustable to conditions, expectations and soil types, TriCure AD contains three separate soil surfactant technologies to counteract hydrophobicity on sand, soil and organic matter. As well as being effective in the recovery of drought damaged areas, TriCure AD is also a valuable tank-mix partner for a number of other Headland products.

SPORTS TURF AND LANDSCAPING EQUIPMENT ollowing their official rebrand in July 2021, Redexim will be returning to BTME 2022 to showcase equipment from across their sports turf and landscaping divisions. While a stop by stand Purple 432 will see a new name, the same technical team will be on hand to discuss some of the iconic machines from across their extensive portfolio – including the high-speed Verti-Drain 2519 and Redexim Multiseeder.

F

Thanks to its 1.9m working width and ability to accept a range of tine options, the Verti-Drain 2519 has proven its credentials as the ultimate in versatile, precision aeration. Reengineered to include a new drawrod system and an easy-to-adjust

10

heave lever, the 2519 offers a PTO speed of up to 540rpm – allowing it to cover almost 9000 sq.m per hour when spaced at 165mm. This high-productivity output has made it a popular choice with greenkeepers and grounds managers alike since it was officially launched at BTME two years ago. Also on the stand, and making its debut in Redexim red, will be the Multiseeder. The Multiseeder is perfectly suited for work on both fine turf and amenity areas and has gained a reputation for being one of the most accurate dimple seeders on the market. Two spiked rollers saturate the ground with up to 1890 holes per sq.m, creating the perfect dimple in which to deliver

the seed, brushed into the hole by a rear-mounted brush to ensure not just optimal soil contact but a clean and tidy finish. The ability to have the rollers fixed or floating means the Multiseeder takes undulating surfaces easily in its stride, and with three working widths of up to 2.1m, there’s a model to suit most applications. With machines spanning aeration, topdressing, overseeding, brushing and synthetic maintenance to name but a few, the Redexim team look forward to answering any technical questions and reconnecting with visitors, once again, in Harrogate.

Foley Company Bring Automatic Quality to BTME 2022

A

merican grinder manufacturer, Foley Company, is bringing automatic quality to BTME 2022 with their range of fully and semiautomatic spin and relief grinders.

In the months leading up to the show at the end of March, Foley’s UK and Ireland distributor, ProSport UK Ltd, has completed the installation of several units. Golf clubs including St Annes Old Links, West Sussex, Henley, Radlett, The Buckinghamshire and Kingsbarns are only some to have purchased cylinder or bedknife grinders as well as contractors Gibson Groundcare Machinery.

“What is equally pleasing for us is clubs such as The Buckinghamshire and Carnoustie who have done their grinding for several years but have seen the difference a Foley Company machine can make for them. In many cases, this is quality and time saving, which are of paramount importance. “BTME 2022 gives us a chance to catch up with these clubs and introduce new people to what Foley has to offer, so we’re excited about the exhibition. We’ll have working grinders on the stand, so attendees can have a hands-on demonstration of the machines in action and have any questions they have answered.”

For many, the automated process of the Accu-Pro models ranging from the 633 reel grinder to the 673 automated bedknife grinder was the main reason behind their decision. This and the ability to relief grind back to OEM specifications are the reasons why so many turf professionals in the UK, Ireland and worldwide are opting for Foley.

The 633 Accu-Pro is an industry leader in versatility and can complete quick touch-up spin grinds or return the reel to manufacturers specifications through relief grinding. The operation is fast and straightforward with the Accu-Reel Selector, and cylinder height stop automatically locating the reel for spin and relief grinding in one set-up.

“In the first few months of 2022, it has been brilliant to get out to our customers with their new grinders,” Managing Director of ProSport UK Ltd, Ian Robson, said. “We have found that inhouse grinding is becoming an increasingly viable and popular option for clubs and contractors, and the automation and relief grinding options we provide really appeal to those who are looking into it for the first time.

Using the optional Accu-Touch 3 Control makes this even easier. You tell the machine what you’re working on and it does the rest using pre-programmed spin speeds, relief torque and in-feeds.

J Premier 4Turf A brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed mixture

I

n response to the increase in reported instances of Brown Patch in the UK football industry, DLF have undertaken a screening programme for the last two years to analyse the tolerance of different varieties. The results of the trial highlighted the strong tolerance of certain DLF diploid varieties together with 4turf®, which now forms the basis of a J Premier 4Turf – a brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed mixture launching in 2022.

16

Brown patch is a turfgrass foliar disease caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia spp. All cool-season turf grasses are susceptible to potential attack by the fungus, however it has been found to be most detrimental to bent grass, ryegrasses, annual meadow grass and some fescue species. Attacks are often triggered by hot, humid conditions with an increase in cases identified on plants that are moist and/or have been over-stimulated with nitrogenbased fertilisers.

Low tolerance

Average tolerance diploid and tetraploid varieties, with 20% 4turf® – formulated with 10% FABIAN and 10% TETRAGAME.

High tolerance Samples of a particularly violent European strain of Brown Patch were harvested from a football environment and were studied at the MariboHilleshög Research AB laboratory in Landskrona, Sweden – specialists in Rhizoctonia fungi. More than 30 perennial ryegrass varieties – including nine 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrasses – were inoculated, with each variety then scored weekly for plant health. DLF were able to determine with confidence, the higher tolerance of the 4turf® varieties to Brown Patch, which correlates with the results seen in other disease trials. Using the findings from the trials, Johnsons Sports Seed have launched J Premier 4Turf. New for 2022, it is the first mixture of its kind to combine the top-performing perennial ryegrasses from the trial to deliver improved tolerance to Brown Patch, together with the outstanding wear tolerance and visual merit of the original J Premier Pitch mixture. J Premier 4Turf takes full advantage of the most tolerant

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | March 2022

Following ongoing dialogue with the DLF technical team since early 2019, Head Groundsman at Reading Football Club Chris Last became the first to trial the new J Premier 4Turf mixture. In conjunction with the trial results, the objective was to deliver a mixture with even greater resilience, even faster establishment and improved wear tolerance. “Having not used 4turf® before, it was interesting to see how well it thrived in our environment!” Chris explains. “We seeded, then sheeted and within just three days the 4turf® was up without the need for excessive levels of input. We were then cutting within a week. As the months progressed, myself and the team at DLF have been avidly observing the sward and how it copes with the issues – particularly disease pressure – at various times of the year. July has always traditionally been a hot-spot for Brown Patch, but last year we saw nothing at all. The additional resilience of the 4turf® has meant that even during high-pressure periods for Fusarium in September and October, any small signs have not turned into full outbreaks. Without question, we have retained far more overall coverage than we have in previous seasons.” More details about the J Premier 4Turf mixture and a number of other new formulations can be found in the Johnsons Sports Seed catalogue, or by visiting www.johnsonssportsseed.co.uk

A grass for all seasons A

new generation of amenity tetraploid perennial ryegrass cultivars offer exceptional qualities for golf courses, stadiums, playing fields and racecourse. Fast establishment, recovery, cold temperature growth, superior stress tolerance and high root mass makes them suitable for a wide range of applications around the course and on pitches, including tees,

18

divotting, walkways, renovation and autumn seeding. But what makes them so exceptional?

COOL PERFORMERS Tetraploids germinate and establish faster than diploid ryes, even in cold soil temperatures from just 4°C! Such highenergy seed, superior winter wear and robust re-growth helps maintain grass cover. The ultimate cold mix is R314 Rye, a blend of amenity tetraploid and annual

ryegrasses for use during the winter season for “get it green” repairs. For sports pitches, when the turf is under such intense wear pressure, the speed of emergence and high root mass helps restore a surface in the shortest possible time, making 4Tetra (100% tetraploid rye blend), R140 (50/50 tetraploid/diploid blend) and R25CRT (tetraploid/creeping/ diploid) perfect for surface repairs or renovation any time of year.

HOT STUFF High root mass and deep rooting means tetraploids are vital to heat survival, giving greater drought tolerance and stability. They are the first and fastest to recover from a prolonged period of heat and drought stress, an ideal choice for freedraining soils and sites exposed to full sun or without irrigation. For example, R6CRT includes tetraploid rye, hard fescue & creeping red fescue for

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | March 2022

Changes in climatic conditions are proving increasingly challenging for turf maintenance. As in recent times, climatic conditions have swayed from one extreme to the other. Late frosts, drought in spring, summer heat waves, periodic intense rainfall are all becoming commonplace. Tetraploids can better withstand heat & drought variations and also germinate in colder temperatures, making 4Tetra the robust, hard wearing, persistent go-too choice fro performance and recovery throughout the seasons.

“We upgraded our seeding at the stadium to the R140 Tetraploid and Diploid Perennial Ryegrass blend because of its robust, hard-wearing benefits and as it work well in colder temperatures. We have also found when using this mixture it helps to establish germination quickly and offers early protection against fungal attack in the early day when the seedbed is young and most vulnerable. Although we normally leave an eight- to nine-week window to create a quality playing surface, the grass established well in just six to seven weeks, and we’re confident that our on-going maintenance programme will support its durability so we can continue to meet the players’ expectations throughout the season.” Ewan Hunter, stadium manager, Nottingham Forest FC

TOUGHEN UP High disease pressure can devastate the performance and visual qualities of the sward. Selecting cultivars with high disease tolerance is an important part of an integrated management approach. The official GEVES European Turf Testing Programme (see table) demonstrates the great tolerance tetraploids have 20

to common turf diseases such as Microdochium Patch, Red Thread & Rust.

GO-TO CHOICE From its initial introduction into the UK by Rigby Taylor, the use of tetraploids has rocketed thanks to their proven performance and flexibility for wide-ranging

applications right throughout the year. Blended with diploid ryegrasses or mixed with fescues they are reliable performers that always deliver. For more information on the choice of R Range tetraploid technology mixes for your course contact Origin Amenity Solutions www.originamenity.com

What is the difference between Seeding and Overseeding? here is often a sense of confusion as to whether you want to seed or overseed in your turf renovation. These two processes both aim to create a viable turf sward from seed but using different processes and machinery.

T

OVERSEEDING What is it? In simple terms, overseeding is a process where grass seed is added to an already existing turfed area which after germination serves to increase the density of the grass plants. This process reduces the ageing process or natural decline of the turf. WHY IS OVERSEEDING DONE? Overseeding is carried out to reduce bare patches or improve or change the grass species to a more desirable one. Eg more shade tolerant. With a good quality and highly efficient overseeder such as the Eliet DZC 600 or DZC 450, you can renovate tired and thin turf in no time at all. This inexpensive alternative to full turf re-laying can take place quickly and guarantees a visible result in less than a month. Additionally, the treated turf will be available for normal use immediately after overseeding. HOW DO YOU OVERSEED? The Eliet pedestrian overseeders are unique in that they scarify to a target depth of 5-7mm, removes thatch and accurately drops the seeds into the grooves. This process can be done in a single pass at 25mm spacings at varying seeding rates from 15gm30gm per m2. Using a grass mixture with grass that creeps will help knit the grass together reducing the appearance of lines. On more bare areas, a double pass can be done ‘up and down’ and ‘left to right’ for example, 22

putting twice as much seed down in the area doubling the benefits such as grass coverage and speed of recovery. SEEDING - WHAT IS SEEDING? Seeding turf or lawns is a process where grass seed is added to either virgin soil or extremely bare or worn areas.

WHY IS SEEDING DONE? The seeding of new turf process is carried out to completely rejuvenate or sow an expansive area. The Eliet GZC 750 & GZC 1000 offer a solution specifically for this task – the complete construction of your new lawn from preparing the seedbed to sowing all with one machine.

“ “With a good quality and highly efficient overseeder such as the Eliet DZC 600 or DZC 450, you can renovate tired and thin turf in no time at all.” HOW DO YOU SEED TURF FROM SCRATCH? The GZC range of seeders from Eliet make light work of sowing. They have reciprocating tines in two rows working across each other and the direction of travel. These tines efficiently break up the soil to about 1.5-2” inches deep helping

to level it off. The finish is of a quality that cut turf can be laid directly on top of the finished surface. Alternatively, there is a seeding box above the tines. The seeding box can be set so a desired amount of seed can be added to the soil during levelling. Seeding rates vary depending upon the area and what seed is being used. For an ornamental lawn and with a seed mixture to match then between 30-40gms per m2 is what you should be aiming for. A general rule of thumb is that the less seed you use, the longer the area will take to knit in. The longer the grass takes to knit in, the more chance of weed ingress.

and it takes a skilled professional to understand when to use which process and machine. The time of year, budget constraints, speed of recovery and desired outcome all play their role and only through effective communication between the professional and the customer can a satisfactory result be achieved. TIP: The easiest way to think of the difference is that ‘Overseeding’ is a maintenance process with faster recovery, whereas ‘Seeding’ is usually a one off or complete project with slower recovery times. www.psdgroundscare.co.uk

Johnsons Sports Seed guide for 2022 launched number of new and updated formulations have been announced with the launch of the Johnsons Sports Seed guide for 2022. Particular highlights include the introduction of new highly rated cultivars into the Johnsons J Links and J Rye Fairway fine turf mixtures, and a brand-new, first-of-its-kind mixture for sports turf - Johnsons J Premier 4Turf - delivering proven Brown Patch tolerance.

A

The 2022 formulation of Johnsons J Links is set to deliver even better salt and drought tolerance to those courses under links conditions thanks to the introduction of Absolom Slender Creeping Red Fescue. Absolom is a highly rated cultivar, offering exceptional disease resistance and tolerance for close mown management. Absolom joins Cezanne and Nigella in this pure Slender 24

blend – backed by DLF’s 4Salt® research, creating mixtures optimised for performance in saline conditions. New formulations of Johnsons J Fairway and J Rye Fairway are also available this year, with the inclusion of Esparina Chewings Fescue and Aniston Perennial Ryegrass respectively. Also backed by research is the brandnew Johnsons J Premier 4Turf mixture. Following two years of trials into Brown Patch tolerant varieties, J Premier 4Turf takes full advantage of the findings - combining the outstanding wear tolerance and visual merit of the original J Premier Pitch mixture with 20% 4turf® and the most tolerant diploid varieties identified in the study. Featuring 10% Fabian and 10% Tetragame tetraploid perennial ryegrass, J Premier 4Turf promises to become the ultimate football and rugby renovation mixture for

disease-resistance, rapid establishment and exceptional wear tolerance. The larger seed and root system of DLF’s 4turf® varieties deliver strong, fast establishment at temperatures as low as 4oc, as well as healthy plant development. Its improved tolerance of drought and disease means the sward retains better colour and recovers quickly from periods of stress. Because of their tolerance to challenging conditions and lower reliance on inputs, 4turf® mixtures have become a popular choice with sports turf managers, with new formulations of both Johnsons J 4Turf and J 4Turf 100 available for 2022. Details of all the new and updated formulations across the golf and sports turf range can be found in the 2022 Johnsons Sports Seed catalogue, or by visiting www.johnsonsportsseed.co.uk

WEED CONTROL

Softly softly spraying Applying the gentle touch is key across the course for head greenkeeper David Byron

“We spray everything, from bracken, bramble and understorey scrub to path, drives and the clubhouse patio.”

T

horndon Park Golf Club rests within a 240-acre woodland conservation site, partly landscaped by Capability Brown and lying just 10 minutes drive from the M25. The only Essex entry in England’s Top 100 league, the 18-hole parkland course is crowned by the magnificent Palladian Thorndon Hall - the former clubhouse before a replacement opened in the 1970s after the building was redeveloped as private apartments. Head greenkeeper David Byron and his nine-strong team have to pit their wits against heavy London clay soil but results speak for themselves, given their lofty ranking. Keeping unwanted growth under control is a year-round operation, he explains. “We spray everything, from bracken, bramble and understorey scrub to path, drives and the clubhouse patio.” Knapsacks come in for some heavy work rotas, with the team totalling three to four weeks cumulatively on the various spraying tasks vital for premier presentation and playability. “Pathways and the main drive alone can take a whole week to treat,” David reports. Weed treatment is a key element of the spraying programme, helping the team rid the 74 bunkers of moss build-up and Poa growth,” he explains, adding: “We’ve future-proofed our greenside bunkers with rubber crumb Pro Fusion and blinder liners to prevent flood washouts. Fairway bunkers are our next job.” The 15l and 20l Cooper Pegler knapsacks have been a constant at Thorndon Park for at least 15 years and have rarely needed replacing, thanks to David’s insistence on pre- and post-season maintenance checks and regular upkeep to replace parts.

“Our CP 1l hand sprayers have been here even longer than I can remember,” he reveals. “The late-February maintenance doesn’t usually need much. We apply silicon grease to lubricate parts and replace seals and O-rings if they have perished or dried out. I know the aftersales care and dealer support are good, so we can always get hold of replacement parts and accessories.” Most of the team are PA1/PA6 qualified so spray duties can be shared out. The man-made three-acre lake and two ponds – fed from the ditch system lining the course - are kept free of unwanted aquatic growth. Aerators keep the water healthily oxygenated, encouraging an array of wildlife in and around the features, including newts, lizards, slow worms and adders. A local man scuba dives to dredge the lake of reeds and to keep banks free.

telescopic lances, will prove “a gamechanger” for penetrating deeper into the undergrowth, David adds. Leatherjackets have proved troublesome. “Two years ago, we lost all our fairways but managed to gain emergency clearance to apply Acelepryn. You only have a narrow window to buy and apply it and sales are strictly recorded and controlled.”

“We wait until high summer when the ditches dry out before applying Roundup along the bases to remove tree growth,” David says. Ecology and environment are high priorities. “We don’t spray many chemicals – mainly feeds and wetting agents and some selective herbicide in the long rough. “Boom spraying comes into play for the larger stretches of the course – we apply natural fungi and microbes on to the soil, using our Toro 5800.”

28

Knapsacks come into their own again for spot spraying weedkiller such as Depitox and HolsterXL on tees, tee banks, and in the rough “to encourage the grasses to flourish, rather than weeds, and to control ragwort”.

Fungicide is applied sparingly and David prefers preventive organic options such as Chitosan spray to resist disease, pest damage and drought. “It’s a probiotic for greens,” he smiles, “helping seed germination and toughening up the plant.” Much of the estate is left wild to foster butterflies, insects and birds – “Three pairs of buzzards nest nearby,” David notes with pride.

“August is the perfect time to spray the bracken, just as stalks start to bend and droop. It takes us a couple of weeks to complete, ideally when we’ve had fine, dry weather beforehand.”

He believes that with sprayers, as with most other things, you get what you pay for. “You can buy cheaper ones of course, but then you’ll discover there are no replacement parts, so you have to bin the sprayer and buy another one.”

A disease free autumn and winter

A

nutritional programme from Headland Amenity has been praised by the Director of Courses at Essendon Country Club, for helping them get through the autumn and winter of 2021 disease-free. After his appointment in June, Marc Winnan had soil samples taken which highlighted extremely high levels of organic matter – the reduction of which was the key to the plan constructed in conjunction with Headland’s Regional Technical Manager Peter Blackaby. 30

Marc oversees all elements of greens maintenance across the Hertfordshire estate, which includes two 18-hole golf courses as well as a driving range, practice facilities and the 9-hole Muntjac Academy Course. “Whenever you start a new role, you’ll instantly spot certain problems but it’s also important to identify anything going on deeper in the profile which is why we had both Headland and the STRI take soil samples” explains Marc, who heads up a team of 15. “The high OM levels were a real concern, so we quickly instigated a

mechanical and nutritional programme to bring that down, to reduce our susceptibility to disease before the high-pressure period arrived.” Key to the programme was Headland’s industry-leading 20-20-30+Mantle Enhanced Plant Health (EPH) tank-mix – a combination of Liquid Turf Hardener, Turfite® Elite and Seamac® ProTurf Fe, proven to deliver turf strength and reduce disease activity when applied as part of a preventative plant-health approach.

“ We applied Quickstart® Maxi Plus which gave us great results across the tees, approaches and fairwways, and then switched this to Multigreen 15-0-22 temperature-controlled release fertiliser to see us through the winter months.

“I’ve used 20-20-30+Mantle previously, but where we would traditionally begin applications at the end of September, we brought this forward to the end of August because of the concerns we had about disease, Fusarium in particular. The 20-20-30+Mantle was complemented with applications of DewCure™ to reduce leaf moisture and this combination, without a doubt, had a massive impact on protecting plant health and saw us get through the whole winter with no disease.” “In other areas of the course, the goal was to improve the density of the sward via granular feeds. We applied Quickstart® Maxi Plus which gave us great results across the tees, approaches and fairways, and then switched this to Multigreen 15-0-22 temperature-controlled release fertiliser to see us through the winter months.” Together with the improvements in course condition, Marc has been equally pleased with the support received from the Headland Technical Team every step of the way. He adds, “Because of his greenkeeping background, Peter speaks our language and worked together with us to give us more than just the products we need, ensuring we always had all of the additional data and knowledge to make an informed decision.” www.headlandamenity.com

Using Nomix Dual on Hard Surfaces gives Long Lasting Weed Control

Getting the most from glyphosate ver the past year, glyphosate has seen increased prices and scarcity has been a large scale problem. With this in mind it is vital that we have different avenues we can take to still get the results we need. ProGreen have a wealth of expertise within the amenity sector and have many solutions to this wide spread issue.

O

NoMix Dual is a great alternative to using standard glyphosate weed killer. This product is the only long-lasting herbicide available for use of both hard and permeable surfaces. Not only does NoMix Dual prevent further weed growth and provide residual control, it also controls emerged broad-leaved and grass weeds. Another important health and safety feature of this product is that no mixing or diluting is required. Simply connect the pre-mixed pack to a NoMix TDC (Total Droplet Control) Applicator, press the button and treat the required areas. If you have managed to purchase your more traditional glyphosate based weed killers, such as Roundup ProActive, there are some tips to get the most out of the product. To start with, using adjuvants can help to improve the efficacy of a herbicide. Products such 32

There are Many Ways to get Better Value from Glyphosates as Validate are able to help tackle the toughest of weeds and can penetrate waxy leaves, such as ivy, helping the weed killer work first time without repeated sprays. Adjuvants have a great number of benefits by improving effects, reducing re-treatment, decreasing labour costs and minimising the chemical load in the environment. Another way to get the most out of glyphosate is by combining it with a suitable residual weed control such as Valdor Flex. The combination of Valdor Flex and a glyphosate weed killer allows

you to control weeds that are present at the time of spraying while also preventing weeds from returning for up to 4 months. Having this residual effect gives you some extra time of not having to spray weeds that would have already returned with glyphosate therefore preserving your stock levels. National organisation Complete Weed Control, who were established in 1972 and have been providing specialist services to the Welsh resort since 1993, supported the venue in the run up to and during the competition. In preparation for the arrival of the teams and spectators, Complete Weed Control were involved in the application of selective herbicide, soluble fertilizer and iron to both fairways and the rough using state of their specially developed sprayers. Moss treatment to car parks and hard surfaces were also a part of the preparations to ensure that everything met Jim’s high standards. The application specialists, who have incorporated innovative technology to improve efficiency and productivity, also applied herbicide to hard surfaces around the entire resort including using their state-of-the-art Weed IT machines to automatically spot-treat all buggy paths. Weed IT, exclusive to Complete Weed Control, uses technology to identify weeds and sprays only where required, reducing the volume of herbicide consumed by typically 60-80%.

Invasive weed control was also a significant part of the operation species such as of giant hogweed, Himalayan balsam and Japanese knotweed were dealt with utilising their Argocat, fitted with a 300 litre tank and two Hypro XT boomless nozzles in difficult to access areas where traditional machinery could not operate. In addition to the land-based applications, Complete Weed Control delivered aquatic weed control, deploying their Reedman boat to cut and harvest weeds from the extensive water features of the resort. The 2010 Ryder Cup has left a legacy at the venue and, more than a decade on, the course remains known for its extremely high standards. The conditions on the Twenty Ten course are arguably better today than they

were during the competition as Complete Weed Control, alongside Jim’s resident grounds team has implemented innovation and change to maintain and improve playing conditions. Since 2016 for example, boom applications have been made utilising a Jacobson GPS sprayer that forms part of the ongoing investment that Complete Weed Control have made to ensure the best possible service delivery to their clients. Alan Abel, south and central Wales manager for Complete Weed Control said: “Our combination of experience, knowledge and industry knowhow alongside our investment in people and machinery allows us to deliver to the very high standards of such prestigious customers. Added to this, our organisation invests heavily in research and development which allows us to make up to date, informed decisions whether treating sports pitches, pavements, recreational areas, commercial facilities or invasive weeds.” www.completeweedcontrol.co.uk 35

In autumn, the powerful leaf blower with adjustable nozzle comes into its own and will soon be joined by the currently in development winter duty package, including a snow plough, salt spreader and winter brush, which will increase the machine’s year-round versatility. NO WEED OUT OF REACH WITH THE CAMPEY AIR TROLLY PACK To compliment the Alltrec’s versatility for landscaping and urban maintenance, Campey Turf Care Systems introduced the latest innovation, the AIR Trolly Pack from Dutch manufacturer WeedControl BV, which brings even the hardest to access weeds into reach. The Honda GX120 motor with compressor powers the LPG/propane 3x15kw hot-air burner head with an adjustable operating temperature between 190°C – 290°C. The small footprint of the trolley and burner means it can easily access hard to reach areas such as around poles, along walls and road edges, under street furniture and in narrow street passages and alleys where weeds consistently grow. The AIR Trolly Pack is also ideal for inner-city areas and the after-treatment of larger weed removal projects.

Flame weeding is a very effective and environmentally friendly way to remove weeds against alternative methods such as potentially harmful herbicides. Most annual and some perennial weeds can be eradicated using a flame that essentially explodes the weeds’ cells, turning them into ash. This ash then mixes with the soil or disperses with no harm to other plants while there is no risk of drift onto other areas, which can be common with chemical applications. WeedControl has explored all health and safety concerns associated with working with a flame during the development of the product. Special attention was paid to the ease of operation to ensure that any user can safely and easily operate the machine. All WeedControl products are made to meet legal requirements when working in public and private areas and impact the environment as little as possible with a focus on sustainability. For more information or a demonstration of the AIR Trolley Pack, contact Campey Turf Care Systems. The company acts as a new equipment importer for some of the most respected grounds care machinery manufacturers including Dakota, Imants, Koro, Campey, Vredo, Foley Air 2G2, BellonMit, and Omarv. Power restored following Storm Arwen thanks to Forest & Garden Ltd and Aspen Fuel

hen Storm Arwen brought severe gale force winds to parts of the North East, several communities were left cut-off and without power. One of those determined to help was Managing Director of Forest & Garden Ltd, Gregor McArthur, who responded to a request from their local MP for support in the supply of emergency generators. With the assistance of some industry contacts, and supply of alkylate petrol from Aspen Fuel, Gregor and his team were able to restore power to more than 50 properties. Hexham-based Forest & Garden Ltd offer the sale, supply and servicing of a broad spectrum of two and four stroke machinery, for the landscaping, contracting and construction industries. “As soon as we saw the appeal we offered our services, and the response was a resounding ‘yes please!’” explains Gregor, who is supported by a team of five. “We contracted in some electrical engineers and sourced some additional generators, the vast majority of which would run on Aspen Fuel.” “With generators sitting outside of residential properties, Aspen was the ideal partner for the refuelling programme. As it doesn’t contain all the hazardous hydrocarbons of traditional pump fuel, Aspen provided the power with significantly reduced levels of pollution and noxious fumes which was so important. It’s really accessible can sizes, with a bespoke filler cap, also meant it was safe, convenient and flexible for the residents to store and use.” When not assisting in recovery efforts, Gregor and his team utilise Aspen

We use Aspen 2 and Aspen 4 for most repair and service jobs we undertake and, where we can, will supply any new machines with Aspen Fuel.” As an Alkylate petrol, Aspen is virtually free from benzene, sulphur and many other harmful hydrocarbons along with being ethanol-free, meaning Aspen

maintains engine performance and preserves the life of component parts which can be susceptible to failure. Gregor concludes, “It’s always good to be able to demonstrate the benefits of Aspen to new audiences. In the recovery work for Storm Arwen, we must pass on a big thank you to the team at Anglo American Oil Company for ensuring we always had supply of Aspen where and when we needed it most.” www.aspenfuel.co.uk

Eco Clipper FM4 Sport for sporting grounds Eco Clipper, known for electric mowers for the turf industry, has introduced a special version for the maintenance of sports and recreational grounds.

Users appreciate the efficiency of the electric drive and the mower’s low noise level. To operate the mower a 40 HP tractor is already sufficient, but for transport and driver comfort a larger tractor which can drive 25 mph on the road is often chosen.

The 4.11 m wide front mower features four independent cutting decks . For the FM4 Sport, the side decks can be folded in independently, allowing for narrow passages to be mowed. The smooth decks with fast rotating small blades ensure a high quality cut and good clippings dispersion. The clip-pings are also spread well in wet grass. This makes it possible to schedule this mower almost independently of the weather. The Eco Clipper mowers are further distinguished by the high possible

mow-ing speed. On turf farms mowing speeds up to 16 mph with the Eco Clippers are not uncommon. This is not practical on sports fields, but speeds of 12 mph are easily feasible for tractors with vario or hydrostatic drive. This means that on average a sports field can be mowed in less than fifteen minutes with an Eco Clipper FM4 Sport.

The electricity to drive the mower is generated by a PTO driven generator. For larger tractors, the generator is fitted on the front mower. For smaller tractors and optimized weight balance Eco Clipper also offers a separate generator unit option for behind the tractor. ISEKI UK & Ireland, distributors of ISEKI compact tractors and mowers alongside their local dealer MST based in Tiverton, recently sold a TG6507 IQ to Exeter Rugby Club ax Sandford has been working at Exeter Rugby Club for over 11 years with full responsibility as the Head Groundsman for the last four years. Working as part of a team of three with one first year apprentice they carefully maintain the premiership rugby pitch, alongside the two Desso rugby training pitches, the grounds and car parks. With over 100 players training three to four times a week it can be quite the challenge with the small team to keep everything in top condition.

capacity for over 15,000 fans and with the new hotel development it offers the opportunity to hold numerous events throughout the year. When the pitches were built a couple of years ago the consultant helped specify the equipment required, this included a 35hp tractor, Wiedenmann Spiker, sprayer and zero turn mower. Since moving up from a championship to a premiership side there comes an increase in expectations, so 18 months on the club needed to upsize their equipment to cope with the increase in demand. Commenting on the equipment Max

This is where we came across the ISEKI TG6507IQ. Scott Struthers, from our local dealer MST Group in Tiverton, brought this machine to us so we could test it out on our site. Its high lift capacity of 1,580kg, tight turning circle, auto pick up hitch and of course the highly specified cab made our decision easy.” “Another brilliant feature of the TG6507 IQ is the headland management system that can be set to automatically disengage the PTO on lifting and GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | March 2022

Farol Expands Club Car Offering As of December 1st, 2021, Farol has purchased the assets of CaddyCars. Farol has seen significant growth in becoming Europe’s largest John Deere specialist Golf and Turf machinery dealership. Supplying hundreds of golf clubs across the UK, Farol was continually looking to drive the business forward. It was evident that there were gaps in the buggy and utility vehicle range. Club Car was the ideal fit for the portfolio. CaddyCars has been in operation since 1991. Supplying golf courses with golf buggies and utility vehicles, though later diversifying the business into supplying councils, manufacturing, distribution, hospitality, and the homeowner market. As Club Car becomes a leading franchise in Farols Golf and Turf department, we welcomed Philip Rosier of CaddyCars to the team. Philip now manages the Club Car business for Farol. Having Phil on the team has created a seamless transition for all CaddyCars existing customers to Farol. This addition has thus created opportunities of future growth for the Golf and Turf business. Taking on this venture has introduced benefits that has allowed us to strengthen our position with the Club Car brand; being

able to purchase and hold a larger number of machines and parts stock, whilst still maintaining the same high level of service that existing customers are used to. Andy Bourke, Club Car’s Regional Manager, said: “Farol is a dynamic, innovative company that’s well placed to serve customers with our range of market-leading utility and transport vehicles whilst delivering the highest level of aftersales service and support.” www.farol.co.uk

Wiedenmann XF6 helps STS York with their cricket wicket aeration marathon Moderate conditions since October have meant sports contractor, Sports Turf Services York has hardly called off a day’s work these past few months. Director, Simon Race and experienced colleague, Nick Hatfield, operate together and separately across the north, maintaining and refurbishing all types of outdoor sports surfaces for schools, councils, and professional and volunteer clubs. Cricket has long been an area of expertise for STS York, and this season they have aerated dozens of squares. Aerating a cricket square follows a standard timetable but so much comes down to the conditions on the day. “It really has to be done between mid-November to December with our machine of choice the Wiedenmann Terra Spike XF6, which is both fast and precise,” explained Nick Hatfield.”

system and let’s CO² out, plus helps with drainage. It can help break up layering caused by over rolling that causes lateral root growth and helps the roots go deeper.” “You don’t want any ‘lifting’ whatsoever. The XF6 is the quickest deep aerator on the market and its tines penetrate the surface and then come back out fast. That ‘in’ and ‘out’ action must be smooth.

“We try not to deep spike beyond December because you want to give the aeration holes time to close. I always suggest a 10 mm wide tine to a depth of no more than 20 cm.

“No two cricket squares are ever the same, nor are the conditions on the day. Just because someone has had theirs done a mile away doesn’t mean yours is ready to do. With timing, the secret is to be patient. Over time you do find what works best,” concluded Nick Hatfield.

“Deep aeration is essential as it lets oxygen down to the root

The bottom blade evolves after 190 years Since the invention of the first lawnmower by Edwin Budding in 1830 the bottom blade or bed knife has not changed in 190 years. To our knowledge the blade has always been manufactured with one cutting side and only a single set of holes to screw the blade into the blade carrier. The first fine cutting golf greens mowers arrived on the world market around 1920 and have since then been constantly improved and refined, however the bottom blade remained unchanged in its design. Donovan Ritchie the “ inventor” re- engineered the bottom blade by adding a second row of holes and thus making the blade a mirror image of itself reinventing the blade forever. No other manufacture has ever manufactured a greens mower bottom blade that can be used twice therefore our blade is effectively 2 in 1. The reversible blade has been patented in the UK , all EU countries, USA , China and South Africa with Australia , Canada and others pending.

South Africa was the testing ground as Donovan is a South Africa businessman, the blades have been tested and sold to the SA golf course market since the patents were approved in 2019. Our blades have proven to be of the highest quality with the top golf courses using the reversible blade, to date we have not lost a customer back to the OEMs or to any aftermarket manufactures “ why would they go backwards “ The blades are manufactured from a spring type steel with a high carbon content. Our blades will not vary more than a 1/4 mm over its entire length making back lapping to a minimum if at all required. The reversible bottom blades replace Toro , John Deere , Jacobsen, and Baroness greens mower blades. airter® the sports turf care of the future with active aerification nique in the world, the airter® loosens the turf layers homogeneously from 8 cm to a depth of more than 24 cm - with adjustable compressed air and in one continuous operation. 26 specially developed injection lances with different types of nozzles inject up to one million litres of air per working process into the ground of a football pitch. With regard to water infiltration, an improvement can be measured immediately on the treated surfaces. Even football pitches that tend to become waterlogged due to an unfavourable structural quality in terms of material selection and grain size

U

distribution; soil properties as well as an unsuitable choice of substrate could be “defused” by working with the airter® with 2 to 9 bars of air pressure. Even unwanted and harmful grubs such as May and June beetles as well as Tipula larvae (leatherjackets) can be effectively and biologically controlled with the airter® using compressed air at 100% and guaranteed. The all-important oxygen, which is dosed into the turf layer by the aeration, ensures stronger roots and thus proven vital plant growth. Anaerobic bacteria are destroyed by the airter® with the supplied

oxygen and thus a “black layer” profile layer can never again develop, which has a damaging effect on the soil. There are also no disturbing puncture holes in the soil. This prevents the soil from drying out at high temperatures and there are no holes visible in the greens that could hinder and disturb the course of the golf ball. The golfers do not notice anything on the green from this maintenance measure carried out on the same day. With the airter®, treatment is always possible even during ongoing play without having a negative effect on the playability of the golf greens. GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | March 2022

TURF MANAGEMENT

Scientific studies have proven a homogeneous and comprehensive loosening of the soil after tilling with the airter®. Measurements with a penetrometer result in a soil loosening of the turf base layer of at least approx. 30%, which lasts for more than 3 weeks. At the same time, a 23% increase in the amount of cuttings was measured, as well as up to 48% better water drainage in the soil. Proper maintenance of organic golf and football courses in the future can only be achieved with active oxygen in the soil. The first golf operations have already successfully converted to this future form of operation with an airter® and more and more are coming! In addition to the effect of a better, more durable and more beautiful lawn, you also reduce your annual maintenance costs with the airter®. (Reduction of water, pesticides, machines and personnel). Especially with hybrid lawn systems, the airter® is unbeatable with its effect. Why?

Fact: Until now, all hybrid turf systems could only be worked with a full chisel. The hollow chisels, which work better in the soil, are prohibited in all hybrid turf systems because they destroy the artificial fibres. This is a maintenance conflict! A full chisel creates little aeration and its penetration creates undesirable vertical compaction in the

turf base layer. The result is poor and hard pitches in the long run. The airter® is the only machine in the world that can demonstrably loosen these hybrid turf systems homogeneously horizontally with compressed air. The quality of a hybrid turf is only sustainably maintained by the airter®. www.airter.com

SPECIALIST MOWERS

The X350R Louis Phillippo, Groundscare Salesman from Ben Burgess provides an insight into one of the best ride-on lawnmowers available this year from John Deere. “One of the best-selling entry-level ride-on lawn mowers available from John Deere is the X350R. It’s very easy to operate with a side-by-side pedal, hydrostatic transmission allowing you to change from forward to reverse easily. It also has the ability to mulch on demand, allowing you to cut paddocks with a side discharge and at the flick of a lever you can mulch your lawn. This really creates a dual-purpose mower for most people’s needs. The X350R comes with a grass collector as standard and is suitable for lawns of up to 2.5 acres. There are many comparable machines to the X350R such as the AL-KO solo and the Stiga Estate, but the superior build quality and incredible parts availability of the John Deere machine, is one of the main reasons people come back to the brand time and time again.

If you have your John Deere domestic ride-on serviced with a John Deere main dealer, you will qualify for additional warranty free of charge.”

We offer servicing at all of our 7 depots meaning we are never too far away should you need expert help or spare parts. We pride ourselves on quality of service in all aspects which is why our company motto is “Where Service Still Counts”.

One of their most recent projects was to install a new pitch at Panama’s National

Stadium, Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez. “We were responsible for all stages of the new hybrid surface at the stadium in Panama City from installation through to the ongoing maintenance” explains Enio. “We wanted to use the newest and best technologies in the market to do this and was the reason for the purchase of two INFINICUT’s from FLexGrass in May 2021.”

Enio Cubillo “The INFINICUT’s are very comfortable to use and being battery powered, bring multiple benefits to the operator and surrounding environment. We are increasingly finding that venues worldwide are looking for greener solutions so having two electric mowers is a great addition to the services we can offer. Since the stadium pitch was completed in July, the pair have been used on a daily basis, with everybody very impressed with the quality of cut

and the definition of stripe we achieve.” Enio has also praised the versatility and the adjustable parameters on the INFINICUT®, particularly the adjustable bedknife angle which means it has delivered cut consistency on the Bermuda grass construction. Together with National League and LPF training and fixtures, the Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez is also hosting five qualifier games for the 2022

Qatar World Cup. “It’s important that we are delivering the best surface possible and the quality of finish with the INFINICUT® is unbeatable. As important as the machinery is the support package, and we have had nothing but excellent service from both FLexGrass and INFINICUT® with any technical help we need, no matter the time difference” he concludes. www.deere.co.uk/en/index.html

For multi-sports turfcare Toro deemed best again for Roehampton Club he Roehampton Club in South West London has chosen, in an extensive and thorough look at the market, to continue its long-term relationship with Toro and distributor Reesink Turfcare with another five-year fullfleet exclusivity agreement.

T

The tender process started over two years ago as the venue, ranked as one of the top multi sports clubs in the country, trialled a wide range of machinery in all weather conditions.

going into a summer, and to put the machines through their paces in such extreme conditions was a great test.” Peter had numerous factors to consider: quality, adaptability, service expectations and price – and it wasn’t just his decision either, it included the opinions of the 20-strong grounds team too. “Forefront in every decision we make is what is best for our members. Are we spending their money wisely and

will they be pleased with the results? It’s also important to know if the fleet will deliver what is best for the team too. Lastly will CEO Marc Newey and the Board sign it off as best value for the club? So, it’s not just one person’s decision, yet it was a unanimous one – Toro was deemed the perfect choice for the maintenance of all our surfaces and for its superior functionality once more. And the deal all-in was best suited for us when it came to price and servicing support as well.”

Course and Grounds Manager Peter Bradburn explains the process: “Our long-standing relationship with Toro is an important factor in the process of choosing a machinery partner, but not a deciding one. What’s most important is that we get the best machines for all our turf-based facilities. “We have a golf course, ten grass tennis courts, four croquet lawns and extensive gardens to consider in our decision-making, which is why it’s so important that we conduct rigorous trials and demos with a range of brands. “The analysis took place over two years and included the summers of 2020 and 2021. This meant the decision was not pressurised and could involve the whole team. Fortuitously, this gave us one wet and one dry summer with the machines. The May, June and July of this year had more rainfall than the winter of the previous year, which is the total reverse of what you’d expect 66

The Roehampton Club has long been a Toro customer, seen here a favoured friend, the Greensmaster 1600, creating a beautiful striped finish.

Course and grounds manager Peter Bradburn (left) and Jon Cole from Reesink signing the partnership agreement. When the new machinery arrives in early 2022, it will be a fleet to reflect the club’s environmental stance, says Peter: “We’re very conscious of climate change and are endeavouring to reduce our CO2 emissions. With that in mind, new choices involved in this deal are the Greensmaster 3360 hybrid riding greensmowers, plus three electric STAR EV utility and people carriers from distributor Reesink. And there was no doubt that the Flex 1021 pedestrian mowers would be included again – they’ve been key to our greens conditioning and the close cutting of the Reelmaster 3575-D mowers have been involved in improving the fairways for years now.” While it is a continuing relationship with Toro, rewarding high performing staff and introducing fresh talent is key to make the most of the new fleet. Peter explains: “In the autumn, we promoted David Howe to Head

Greenkeeper to succeeed Ashley Allpress. David has proved himself as Ash’s understudy and Jamie Wright comes in as the new deputy head greenkeeper to support David and start the cycle again. Like most aspiring course managers, Jamie has done his journeyman training in the USA with an enviable year at Pebble Beach and his formative years at Sunningdale. The gardens team has been revitalised with the arrival of Sam Cumber, who was part of the crew who won Gold for Richmondupon-Thames through the Britain in Bloom horticultural competition three years concurrently.” All of these changes spearhead neatly in time for the Ladies’ Gold Challenge Cup. Returning after a COVID-enforced break, the event – which is older than the Masters – opens the Spring golfing calendar at the club, with tennis and croquet

championships to follow. Peter concludes by saying: “While it was not a foregone conclusion that Toro would be the machinery partner we committed to, the continuation of our history, even as personnel change, reflects a strong partnership between the two companies taking us to 15 years of working together.” To talk to someone about how the Toro range would suit your course, call 01480 226800.

SPORTS SURFACES

Multi-spectral mapping of golf courses Dr Tim Lodge explains how Agrostis Sports Surface Consulting uses drones to provide clubs with information about their course’s grass health grostis is pioneering the use of drone-based technology for golf courses, to map grass health and condition, and combining this with over 30 years’ experience in agronomic science.

A

Our approach involves the collection and interpretation of ground cover and soil condition data over large areas and identifying the most appropriate and precisely targeted management practices. This delivers significant economic and environmental benefits through, for example, the more efficient use of 74

precious and costly resources such as fertiliser and water. By using a sophisticated, dronemounted camera, a par four, for example, may be photographed at regular, pre-determined, intervals, perhaps 200 or 300 times. The images are then combined to produce one picture of the entire hole. Taken from about 30 metres, that picture, as a conventional RGB (red-green-blue) image and at very high resolution, is of interest for yardage determination or bunker evaluation.

But, after some years of using a drone-mounted optical camera, we have introduced a rather special instrument which captures light from outside of the visible spectrum and that cannot be seen with the human eye. This multi-spectral imagery provides information on a range of features related to the health of the grass and the general condition of the ground cover. Those features include the grass chlorophyll content, its water status, species composition and shoot density, all key components of the playing quality and aesthetics of sports turf surfaces. GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | March 2022

SPORTS SURFACES

This very clever stuff is only of value if it can be interpreted in terms related to the actual quality of the surface from a golfing point of view and in ways that can be appreciated and acted upon by the greenkeeper. So, accompanying the multi-spectral mapping capability, Agrostis provides a hands-on assessment of the key areas flagged up by the mapping exercise. That assessment, based on actual observation and the sampling of soil and surface features on the ground, incorporates our long experience in golf research and agronomy and integrates this with the extraordinary capabilities of drone technology. The upshot is a comprehensive assessment of the agronomic needs of the course, providing environmental and economic benefits, notably in reduced fertiliser, water inputs as well as enhancements in biodiversity and habitat quality.
