Quick turn-around – great results!

Due to Covid-19 sports calendar upheavals, the window to renovate has been incredibly tight for EFL Championship League football clubs this year, but great teamwork and bespoke maintenance programmes by Nottingham Forest FC’s grounds team keep the playing surfaces in top-notch condition 6

nlike other clubs in the Championship, the playing surfaces at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground and the training ground are not identical, so stadium Head Groundsman Ewan Hunter works closely with training ground Head Groundsman Matt Tietjen to ensure youth academy up to first- team players experience the best playing surfaces possible.

U

The increase in cellular chloroplast boosts chlorophyll production and aids energy absorption. It works well in colder temperatures, has enhanced disease tolerance and creates a deeper, denser root mass

According to Ewan, the fibre-sand surfaces at both sites are in great condition, and that’s due to Rigby Taylor products. “The players like the pitches at both venues as they give a slick playing surface,” he says. “At the City Ground the surface doesn’t bobble and the ball moves around well. My deputy, Jack Farmer, and I take a meter reading with a Clegg hammer if areas of the pitch are harder than others and occasionally struggle with water in the winter months. However, when the weather is on our side, we produce one of the best surfaces in the Championship.” And a sizable collection of pitch, grounds team and groundsman of the year awards from the Grounds Management Association and the STRI is testament to the team’s high standards. Ewan says he’s proud that the club’s team of four full-time and two apprentice grounds personnel do such

a good job with what they currently have to work with. The equipment at the stadium includes G860 Dennis cylinder mowers, a Toro Procore, a vertidrainer and sprayers. At the training ground, Matt uses ride on and tractor-mounted equipment to cover the five and a half pitches including sprayers, Toro Reelmaster 3100 mowers, a Toro Procore and a Rigby Taylor iGO line marker - marking pitches with the dilutable line marking paint, Dazzle. Regarding pitch materials, Ewan says that Rigby Taylor’s Technical Sales Representative Mike Brear is an invaluable addition to the grounds team. “Matt and I speak to Mike quite a bit, he’s always at the end of the phone when we need him. His product and industry knowledge is exceptional and we trust him 100%.” The club uses Rigby Taylor products that include the seed and its establishment, disease prevention, nutritional supplements and, according to Mike, his regular conversations with Ewan and Matt cover a proactive programme of treatment. “We discuss what we’re looking to supplement – the leaf, the roots or match recovery,” Mike says. “We keep an eye of the fixture list, the time of year and look at what the plant needs, not just now but in a few weeks’ time.”

GREENKEEPING

The annual nutrient and disease prevention programme at the City Ground includes Rigby Taylor’s Microlite premium range of NPK-balanced fertilisers, which is complemented by the Nutri-Link range of bio-stimulant liquid sprays. In addition, Ewan uses the Autumn Green Bio fertiliser in autumn and winter and applies fungicides with fertiliser application throughout the year to keep diseases at bay. Matt follows a similar programme to ensure playing surface consistency at both venues. “The training pitches get plenty of use from the academy under nine’s up to the first team players – 600-700 hours on the three academy pitches and about 350 hours on the first team pitches - so we need to keep up standards. We rely on Rigby Taylor’s Fine Turf Bio and Premier HG or PolyPro range of fertilisers, as well as Nutri-Link Revive and Nutri-Link Base liquid sprays, plus the Autumn Green Bio and fungicides,” Matt says. Ewan purchases products for both venues, in close consultation with Matt, and says that since joining the club in 2005, he tried a lot of grass seed brands before Rigby Taylor’s R14 100% Perennial Ryegrass blend and continued with this for five years before upgrading to the R140 Tetraploid and Diploid Perennial Ryegrass blend because of it’s robust, hard-wearing benefits. According to Mike, doubling the number of chromosomes has given R140 tetraploid perennial ryegrasses cellwall ‘double glazing’. “The increase in cellular chloroplast boosts chlorophyll production and aids energy absorption. It works well in colder temperatures, has enhanced disease tolerance and creates a deeper, denser root mass,” he says. Faster establishment in a shorter renovation window was a key issue for the club this season, due to Covid-19 effects on the sporting calendar. 8

Ewan says he was literally waiting for the last kick of last season’s home game so he could start work within a short six-week renovation window before the 2020/21 season kicked off. Matt too had the same time constraints when renovating his three academy pitches in time for pre-season training.

sprayer so it gives us that extra couple of weeks’ protection before we apply a fungicide.”

“One of the major benefits we’ve both found when using R140 is that it helps to establish germination quickly and offers early protection against fungi,” Ewan says. “In the early days, when the seed bed is very young, we don’t want to be going on there with a tractor or a

With such a short window, Ewan, Matt and the club’s renovation contractor, Premier Pitches, decided to go a lot lighter with the Koro, before seeding the City Ground and academy pitches – leaving them green, instead of taking them back to sand, which allowed a percentage of poa to remain in the ground; This was controlled by brushing and verticutting after a game and boxing off the clippings to prevent them from spreading.

Matt was also impressed by the fact that the seed can withstand low temperatures and its tolerance to drought.

Ewan continues: “R140 has already worked really well for us during renovation this year. Although we normally leave an eight- to nine-week window to create a quality playing surface, the grass has established well in just six to seven weeks, and we’re confident that our on-going maintenance programme will support its durability so we can continue to meet the players’ expectations throughout the season.” www.rigbytaylor.com

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

Water Supplies for Irrigation or all groundsmen and greenkeepers climate change brings about real issues in maintaining good playing surfaces as we experience periods of drought and exceptionally high temperatures. In West Sussex during summer 2019, 36 C was experienced at some golf clubs. The cool season type grasses used in the UK were never developed to withstand these temperatures.

F

So what can you do about it? Well obviously you need to irrigate to get sufficient water to the grass roots but some of you may not be aware of the advantage of syringing. If you are lucky enough to have an automatic irrigation system then you should find this facility available as one of the programmes. For those not familiar with this practice it involves running the sprinkler system for a short period 2 or 3 minutes – just enough to damp down the grass. The sun then burns off the moisture and in so doing the latent heat factor cools down the grass plant relieving some of the stress. All of these irrigation applications require the precious resource WATER. Now climate change has not in general reduced the annual rainfall, it just tends to arrive in heavy downpours and thus the dry periods are longer. Much has been said about the water shortage in the UK but quantity is not the issue; it more

about storage and distribution. Water purchased for the Water Company is expensive and subject to restriction just at the time you may need it. So what can you do about it? Providing you have sufficient space the construction of an earth bank reservoir is the best line of action. If you can find an area 100m x 80m then you could store 12,000,000litres. Even in a space 75 x 55m you could store 5,900,000litres. So now you have the storage how do you fill it? First thing to know is that no licence is needed to abstract 20,000 litres a day from a natural source providing the abstraction does not have a significant impact on the stream flow

or the underground aquifer. This would put 7,300,000 litres into your reservoir per year. Providing the geological strata is suitable you might get a licence to abstract at a higher rate from a suitable borehole. Often the Environment Agency would require the abstraction to be in the winter but that is not a problem if your reservoir is big enough. Water harvesting can be useful for sports grounds that have large stands with roofs and lots of hard surfaces. Storage is a bigger issue. You can build a completely invisible underground storage system beneath the playing surfaces without the use of concrete. Nearly all these abstraction and storage situations will require some sort of planning consent as well as careful engineering. You need to engage consulting engineers from whom you should expect to cover all aspects of the project from initial surveys, geological investigation, consultations with the Environment Agency and other agencies for the protection of nature. They should be your consultants, entirely independent of contractors and manufacturers so as to ensure you get the best system at the best possible price. www.2ic.co.uk

Good things come to those who wait

Toro fleet for Hainault Golf Club

I

t was a deal a couple of years in the making for Hainault Golf Club in Chigwell, Essex, as it changed machinery brands and settled on a large fleet with Toro and Reesink, and it was worth the wait according to course manager

Paul Selbie. Choosing a new machinery brand and partnering with a new distributor are two big decisions, requiring research and demonstrations, and it can take time to be sure it’s the right move for the future of the club. But actually, Paul says, the decision to commit to Toro and Reesink Turfcare was a straight-forward one, made with no hesitation: “This was my first machinery fleet deal at Hainault. I appreciate it’s a big thing to step away from what the club and team have known and relied on for a long time, but with the previous machines well-overdue an upgrade, it was the right time to present all the options to the team. “Everyone was involved and while I had used Toro previously, no one else had,” Paul continues.” The feedback was really interesting from the demos and it brought everything to the table, not just the performance of the machines, but the bigger picture. For example, was Reesink the right distributor, was Richard Freeman the right contact and would the support and back-up be there? “The Reesink team was really involved in demoing the Toro machines with us and you could clearly see this was important to them. Richard made it feel like the beginning of a long-term relationship, it certainly wasn’t just a deal to him.” Paul says the machines ability to cope with the two courses which are both hilly, parkland and tree-lined, led the team to

14

unanimously conclude that Toro suited the lay of the land and performed very well. And while there could have been better machines out there for certain aspects of course maintenance, what couldn’t be bettered was the whole package and the deal was done in 2018. So why the delay in the process? Well, that comes down to factors out of Paul’s control such as renegotiating the lease of the land, Paul says: “We had to press pause and while it was frustrating, it was worth the wait to receive them in 2020 of all years. We’ve had the time to get to know the machines, their capabilities and can confirm that Toro really does exceed in terms of efficiency. That counted and meant that despite a reduced work force the course was in excellent shape when we opened back up again after lockdown.” Included in the order are two Toro Greensmaster TriFlex 3400 mowers, two Greensmaster 3250-D mowers, two Reelmaster 5610-D mowers, a Groundsmaster 3500-D mower, the Groundsmaster 1200 towed rotary mower, a Workman GTX utility vehicle and a GreensPro 1260 greens roller. Paul says: “It is a fleet predominantly focused on frontline machines, but with further investment plans in place for the next couple of years, that won’t be the case for long. Business is good, the course is presenting really well and we’re planning on putting Toro through its paces with some improvement projects over the winter months too so we’re in a positive place with some exciting things to look forward to.” To talk to someone about the finance options available and how the Toro range would suit your course, call 01480 226800.

We are really pleased with the XF’s work rate and our ability to aerate multiple pitches in one day; a junior pitch is taking less than an hour. “The cricket squares had their first aeration in mid-November and held up well; depth was 150mm with 16mm tines. They also got a little feed using Sierrablen Plus 3 19-5-18+2Mgo+TE. I was happily surprised the disturbance was so negligible. GKB Offer Groundsmen the Ultimate Aeration Machinery Grounds staff can innovative their aeration methods with the Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) & Topair

G

KB Machines, the company behind sustainable, reliable and robust maintenance machinery for natural, synthetic and hybrid turf provide groundsmen with the solution to ground compaction thanks to their aeration products. Combining aeration and rolling, the GKB Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) and GKB Topair work together to ensure groundsmen 20

can maintain their grounds to optimum condition. With many turf professionals stuck between wanting their grass to grow but also wanting to maintain a levelled sports pitch, the GKB Topair offers the perfect solution. Thanks to its EvolventeÂŽ blades, the GKB Topair minimises the surface disruption. The GKB Topair also reduces power usage by minimising friction between the blades and the pitch.

This reliable machine features an operating speed of around 10 km/h with a maximum operating depth of 16 cm which can easily be read from the mobile measuring rod. Engineered with versatility in mind, the robust GKB Topair also allows users to level out their sports pitch by a hydraulically adjustable pressure roller which users can aerate and level the pitch or execute the tasks separately.

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | Spring 2021

AERATION, IRRIGATION & DRAINAGE

The GKB Topair fulfils the desire and ambition of making sports pitch maintenance sustainable, which works effectively in conjunction with the GKB Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) as the aeration of the upper layer is a necessity for natural grass growth. Considered one of the major causes of poor sward density, root development and waterlogging, the GKB Deep Tine Aerator (DTA) works on natural sports pitches to relieve the surface, compaction enabling water to travel through and for stronger roots to develop. With an adjustable 25-degree heave angle, the GKB DTA’s tine holding system allows you to take control of removing compaction.

From varying depths up to 16 inches and featuring a 3-speed heavy-duty gearbox, you can adjust the speed on

the tines to create the required hole pattern in the turf. Thanks to the machines unique tine mounting system, quick changeover for different size tines has never been easier. Like all GKB products, the DTA was built on the understanding that ‘the worker is king’, and this innovative machine requires minimal maintenance as it’s fitted with heavy-duty sealed bearings on the crankshaft, ensuring focus is always on improving the ground and less on maintaining the machine.

BIGGA

unveils brand new for sports and turf industry

T

he British & International Golf Greenkeepers Association has unveiled a brand new outdoor festival and exhibition, taking place

in June 2021. The event, called the Festival of Turf, will bring together the greenkeeping and turf management industry for two days of innovation, exhibition and entertainment. Taking place in the COVID-secure setting of the Warwickshire Event Centre on 8 & 9 June 2021, the Festival of Turf will feature two full exhibition days with a wide range of trade stalls and opportunities to interact with vendors and meet face-to-face with industry peers for the first time since before the coronavirus pandemic took hold. The Warwickshire Event Centre is located on the outskirts of Leamington Spa,

close to Coventry. Centrally-located, the venue enjoys easy access to all transport networks, along with 2,000 free parking spaces. The Warwickshire Event Centre can accommodate up to 200 exhibitors and is capable of welcoming 3,000 visitors a day through its doors. Set in a 30-acre site with both indoor and outdoor exhibition areas, the venue provides countless opportunities to make the Festival of Turf an innovative and exciting new event for the greenkeeping and amenity turf management industry. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic BIGGA has been in regular conversation with regulators, golf’s governing bodies and central government and there is widespread confidence that a successful event can take place in June 2021.

Importantly, there is also a keen desire among commercial partners and industry professionals to provide an event that enables the industry to move forward and begin the process of rebuilding so many key relationships that have been eroded through the distance imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. BTME, BIGGA’s annual trade exhibition that was due to be held in January 2021, has been cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and the Association remains proud that the event’s spiritual home, the Harrogate Convention Centre, continues to be utilised as an NHS Nightingale Hospital. BIGGA’s world-renowned education programme, Continue to Learn, has moved to an entirely-online format and will be held across two weeks during January 2021. More information can be found on the BIGGA website. BIGGA CEO Jim Croxton said: “I’m excited that BIGGA is finally able to launch the

Festival of Turf to the industry and bring some much-needed hope for a brighter future. The Festival of Turf is a hugely welcome opportunity to reunite our industry, which will have been forcibly separated by the global pandemic for nearly 18 months by the time this event takes place. “The industry has survived brilliantly despite all the challenges it has faced, due in no small part to the resilience and adaptability of BIGGA members and the network of commercial partners and who have supported us all throughout the pandemic. There has been a clear groundswell of opinion that members, other turf professionals and commercial supporters want the opportunity to celebrate our achievements and put this whole terrible ordeal behind us – and that’s where the Festival of Turf comes in. The event will be an opportunity to reconnect at a time when personal connections have never been more vital.” For more information about the Festival of Turf, head to the BIGGA website, www.bigga.co.uk

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

Low Floor Vehicles for Grounds Maintenance ou will have seen them, you probably don’t know what they are called, but we’re pretty sure, you will have seen them around. We are of course referring to our Plant & Go® range of Grounds Maintenance vehicles.

Y

The Plant & Go® is somewhat distinctive, in fact, there’s no other vehicle quite like it. Much like its sister vehicle, the Load & Go®, the Plant & Go® was designed and built with the end-user in mind. When designing the Plant & Go® vehicle, the AKFS design team quickly realised the challenges that many modern-day grounds maintenance and commercial lawn care specialists encountered regularly. The AKFS vehicle designs go a significant way in irradicating those challenges and have proven over time to increase operational efficiency and improve upon operator Health & Safety practices. Both the Load & Go® and the Plant & Go® vehicles have been designed at their core to carry commercial and specialist lawn mowers, complete with cutting decks with absolute ease; as 26

well as, all of the additional equipment a busy grounds maintenance team would require on a daily basis. Each vehicle type is completely bespoke to the end-users requirements and can be built as such. Standard equipment includes a lightweight slip-resistant floor and operative handles. Optional extras include – mesh sides, raised storage pods, spring assisted tailgates, floormounted tool vaults, and even remote control winches. Both types of vehicles are built upon base chassis’ with a Gross Vehicle Weight no greater than 3500kg; they can be driven by anybody over the age of 18 that has a standard UK full driving license, and as a trailer is now not required, nor does the driver have to hold a trailer

license. Although based on vehicles of 3500kg GVW, each design returns a payload generous enough for the job at hand, and being a single-vehicle with no trailer attached, they are extremely maneuverable and very easy to drive, loaded or otherwise. If you need a vehicle that requires a higher gross vehicle weight, that’s no problem either. AKFS have over 30 years experience manufacturing premium quality specialist vehicles that provide an excellent return on investment. If you are interested in discussing a new vehicle for your business, why not give us a call on 01246 250022, we have a Product specialist in Landscaping and Plant Hire, who would be pleased to assist you. The Elite Standard of Green Mowing Jacobsen Introduces the Eclipse 360 ELiTE Lithium Mower

he new Eclipse 360 ELiTE from Jacobsen has been designed to combine the next generation of ELiTE lithium-ion batteries with a signature cut that has been trusted for a century.

T

ELiTE batteries have powered E-Z-GO vehicles for over 15 million hours, and that technology has been adopted by the

28

E360 ELiTE to make a mower that can cut 50+ large greens on a single charge.

consumption is reduced when cutting with the diesel hybrid.

Noise during operation is reduced to virtual silence, meaning the machine can be used to cut anywhere early in the morning without disruption. The significant reduction in noise pollution is combined with zero air pollution with the all-electric model, while fuel

Jacobsen has a decade’s worth of experience with the Eclipse range, and that has been reflected in the features of this new machine. The Patented Frequency of Clip Control ensures a consistent cut every time by linking the reel speed to the forward speed.

TRACTORS

“ Jacobsen has a decade’s worth of experience with the Eclipse range, and that has been reflected in the features of this new machine.

By having the reels turning in time with the wheels you’re able to keep a consistent frequency of cut regardless of who is mowing, but still have the option to increase it without reducing the mowing speed. This control is taken further with individual unit control that can adapt the cutting configuration to vary wheel runs and truly eliminate triplex ring.

Attention has also been paid to the access and maintenance aspects of the machine. A swing-out centre unit has been added for quick and easy cleaning, maintenance or swapping the unit. No tools are required to swing the unit out with the removal of a lynchpin that is then used to hold the unit in the swung-out position all that is needed.

Seven, nine, eleven or fifteen blade reels are available for the E360 ELiTE to allow for varied applications of the machine from golf greens and tees to football pitches and ornamental gardens. For more information or a demonstration of the Eclipse 360 ELiTE, please contact your local Jacobsen dealer.

All of these changes were made following a 360-durability review that has also included the addition of new brushless lift actuators that have ten times the lifespan of the previous option.

New partnership benefits Leven Links G

olfers visiting Leven Links Golf Course in Fife are often unaware that they are playing, in part, over one of the oldest pieces of golfing land in the world. This is a traditional links with rolling fairways, many of which are lined by ancient sand

dunes, fast putting surfaces, burns and pot bunkers. The club dates back to 1820 although golf only started being played here in 1846, and it is thought that the original layout became the first course that century to boast both 18 tees and 18 greens. Leven Links also

lays claim to hosting the oldest open amateur strokeplay championship in the world. The Standard Life Assurance Company’s Amateur Champion Gold Medal has been held here since 1870, with more recent winners including Lee Westwood and Andrew Coltart.

after a period as head greenkeeper at Ladybank Golf Club, also in Fife. David, who is a BIGGA Central Section Scotland committee member, believes there is a lot of potential to bring Leven Links back to a pre-eminent position by once more hosting big events and putting its name firmly back on the golfing map. Two clubs share the course, Leven Golfing Society and Leven Thistle, and this comes with its own challenges, says David. The sheer volume of competitive golf generates a lot of work to meet the required standards and means the pressure on the small greenkeeping team is constant. “It’s great to have the opportunity to manage my own course in the way I’d like,” says David. “Expectations are high, and we’re trying to produce the best possible conditions on a day to day basis. This has meant the introduction of more modern techniques and cultural practices, as well as investment in up to date course machinery.

(Standing front left & right) Leven Links course manager David Gray and dealer Double A golf specialist John Bateson with (middle row left to right) deputy course manager Gary McLaren, assistant greenkeeper Scott Downie and first assistant Patrick Wood, and (back row left & right) apprentice Andrew Wood and assistant greenkeeper Andrew Mann.

Teamwork is hugely important in our industry and with staff working independently towards the same end goal, the collective results are so rewarding.

It also hosts the historic Lindsay Shield, an interclub match between Leven, St Andrews and Carnoustie which can be traced back over 150 years. Establishing a new heritage is the aim of course manager David Gray, who took over here in September 2018

“With the exception of my deputy Gary McLaren, who has spent an impressive 30 years at Leven Links, I have been able to build a fantastic new team who have adapted very well to my strategies and are loving the introduction of the new equipment. Teamwork is hugely important in our industry and with staff working independently towards the same end goal, the collective results are so rewarding.” As part of this initial modernisation process, a ProGator utility vehicle equipped with an HD200 amenity turf sprayer was bought from local John Deere dealer Double A at Cupar. This provides more accuracy and precision plus a bigger tank capacity than the course’s previous mounted sprayer, and led to the clubs’ first John Deere machinery deal being agreed with the dealership in late 2019, as part of a new partnership approach.

The fleet now also includes 2500E hybrid electric and 2550 E-Cut triplex greens mowers, another ProGator with a Dakota top dresser, TE electric and HPX diesel Gator utility vehicles and an R Series walk-behind rotary mower plus ancillary products including a Wessex collector and a Tru-Turf greens roller, for which Double A is the official UK distributor. “There was no structured machinery replacement strategy in place when I came to the club, so this was one of the first things we had to address to improve the overall course quality and presentation, as well as reliability of the equipment,” says David.

we defer payments due to Covid-19, we were also able to bundle in an extra machine, the HPX Gator,” says David. “We had great support too from John Bateson of Double A, and both of these aspects were key factors in making the deal happen very quickly and smoothly. “Our cutting regimes have changed as well since bringing in the new Tru-Turf roller. John Deere cutting units are set up differently to our previous mowers and the clip rates are higher, so by using the roller we can miss out the odd cut now and again, which is a great bonus

given the pressures on play. “My past experience with Double A has been worth a lot, especially having them on the doorstep and knowing I can rely on the same level of service I’ve always received,” adds David. “They helped me to focus on exactly what I needed to fit in with my plans for the course, and we’re already benefiting from that and the great technological strides John Deere has made in recent years with its product range.” www.deere.co.uk

“I made a proposal to the Leven Links Joint Committee, and their support has been fantastic, bearing in mind we are breaking completely new ground for the clubs with this deal. Now we have an established plan and we’re always talking about what happens next, so it’s very much a continuing process. “We opted for a John Deere Financial lease deal, which proved to be extremely flexible as not only could 32

Verti-Cut It’s a new year and for Redexim, that brings with it two new additions to their scarification portfolio

E

xtending their Verti-Cut range, 2021 sees the introduction of two larger working widths with the launch of the Verti-Cut 1600 and VertiCut 2000. Developed in direct response to customer demand and to compliment their existing offering, both of the new models offer scarification to depths of up to 50mm (1.95”). The Verti-Cut employs specially designed carbide-tipped blades which encourages healthy turf by cutting the lateral growth of grass roots and removing dead plant material, providing more room for roots and shoots to grow and allowing for better water penetration and airflow. This improved downward movement of moisture and nutrients delivers far more uniform, vigorous and vibrant growth in return. The new Verti-Cut 1600 offers a 1.6m (63”) working width which makes it ideal for smaller, undulating surfaces such as golf greens while at 2.0m (78.7”), the Verti-Cut 2000 lends itself to the scarification of larger spaces such as sports fields.

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | Spring 2021

Both new models are tractor mounted and PTO driven, with the drive system utilising chains to ensure constant drive to the blades – even when working at depth. The adjustment of the Verti-Cut’s working depth can be done accurately and with ease through alterations to the front roller, which also helps to negate scalping when working on undulating ground. As standard, the Verti-Cut comes with 2mm blades operating at a spacing of 30mm (1.18”), though this can be increased to 58mm (2.28”) if required. 1mm and 3mm blades can also be specified as an optional extra. The Verti-Cut is one of a number of scarification solutions available from Redexim – a range which spans pedestrian, trailed and cut and collect machines to suit a wide variety of sports surfaces and applications. The new Verti-Cut 1600 and 2000 models will be available in the Spring, with the additional added security and support provided by Redexim’s worldwide distribution network. www.redexim.com

Spring ready with Nutrigrow Spring-Rise Fertiliser arly Spring is a crucial time of year to prepare for the season ahead, to keep any Sports surface in top condition. The Nutrigrow range by Agrigem cover a variety of granular and soluble fertilisers suitable for a wide range of surfaces from Sports Turf to Lawns.

E

Nutrigrow Spring-Rise Fertiliser (10-44+TE) is the supreme choice for any preseason Spring maintenance programme. Nutrigrow Spring-Rise is a high quality NPK fertiliser which contains a mixture of both macronutrients and trace elements. This mini compound fertiliser is slow release over a six-week period ensuring grass stays lush and healthier for longer. As well as providing essential macronutrients (nitrogen, phosphate, and potassium), Spring-Rise also contains the micronutrients calcium, magnesium, and iron. Each of these trace elements contribute to the maximum nutrient uptake. Trace elements not only improve turf colour but are important components in the vital photosynthetic pathways within the grass plant. Due to the combination of macro and micronutrients, Spring-Rise is particularly useful on grass which looks stressed or in need of some care. Spring-Rise is ideal for use on sport turf covering golf, cricket, bowls, football, and rugby. An excellent fertiliser for use in the Spring, Spring-Rise can also be used throughout the Autumn months. The Nutigrow range of slow release, straight and mini granular fertilisers are formulated with tailored N P K levels and added nutrients to improve establishment, encourage seed growth, and maximise the quality of grass and turf. 36

Other spring fertilisers in the Nutrigrow range include: • Nutrigrow Spring Lawn Fertiliser (9-7-7) A fast-acting spreadable, compound quality fertiliser offering an excellent spreading pattern. Nutrients are released slowly over a six -week period which avoids any rapid top growth and repeated mowing. • Nutrigrow Phased Release (18-3.5-8 + 1Mg) An organic based, mini-granular compound fertiliser with trace elements for maximum nutrient uptake.

• ProloNg Slow-Release Fertiliser (46-0-0) A straight nitrogen fertiliser which will release over a 6–12-month period. Allowing the plant to draw on available nitrogen over several months is not only far more efficient but also reduces the amount of nitrogen lost to the atmosphere. Contact the Agrigem Team to discover Nutrigrow Spring-Rise as part of your essential annual care programme. Tel: 01522 246491 Email: sales@agrigem.co.uk www.agrigem.co.uk

• Nutrigrow High-Phosphate Fertiliser (10-15-10). A quality fertiliser for areas requiring a large amount of phosphate. Low levels of nitrogen and potassium make this the perfect choice as a general feed.

Seeding the green future t isn’t just Grounds Manager Nigel Harvey who has moved from the Stanley Park Training Ground to the main Stadium pitch of Forest Green Rovers FC – his Johnsons Sports Seed programme has made the switch too! Having used Johnsons mixtures for near-on 15 years, the club’s renowned eco and environmentally friendly approach means the combination of J Premier Pitch and J 4Turf will become Nigel’s main weapon in the fight against weed ingress and disease.

I

Nigel moved from Forest Green’s training facility to take up his new position at The New Lawn Ground in June 2020, which he maintains alongside a recently appointed apprentice. “The maintenance methods are very different between the training ground and the stadium, with fewer conventional tools and techniques at my disposal in the approach we take to issues such as weed and disease control” he explains. After being described by FIFA as ‘the greenest football club in the world’ and becoming the first UN certified carbon-neutral football club, it’s out with chemicals and in with cultural practices - including regular overseeding. “Johnsons J Premier Pitch has proven itself to deliver fantastic resistance to disease, great appearance and plant strength at our training ground and at many of the country’s other leading sports venues, so achieving that is going to be key moving forwards in maintaining surface quality and health at the stadium.” One of Nigel’s first projects was a major drainage installation programme, the recovery from which saw 20 bags of J Premier Pitch oversown on The New Lawn pitch.

“Johnsons J Premier Pitch has proven itself to deliver fantastic resistance to disease, great appearance and plant strength at our training ground and at many of the country’s other leading sports venues”

“It’s first usage at the stadium and it germinated in 6 or 7 days and we conducted the first cut at just over 2 weeks – it was fantastic.” “We will then compliment the J Premier Pitch with Johnsons J 4Turf mixture, with tetraploid perennial rye which works well for winter overseeding. This will help to give us some additional strength in high wear areas such as the goal mouths as well as give us a fighting chance to repair any damage or bare patches through the cooler months.” Tetraploid Perennial Ryegrass establishes rapidly under cooler soil temperatures, as low as 4oc. It provides enhanced root development and is proven to deliver exceptional natural genetic disease resistance, reducing the need for costly fungicides by demonstrating exceptional tolerance to a broad range of environmental stresses. Nigel concludes, “From previous experience, I trust that Johnsons will put us in the best possible position in terms of retaining all-important coverage and plant strength to help resist weed ingress and cope with disease pressure as and when it returns.” www.dlf.co.uk

The percentage of each cultivar within the blend should always be well balanced. For example, including a top-rated cultivar at only 10% provides little benefit in a 100% ryegrass blend. This is particularly important if much of the seed in the bag comprises a high imbalance of any single cultivar and/or poor wear tolerant cultivars. SPORTS PITCHES Recovery capability plays such a vital role as the season progresses in helping to keep a consistent playing surface. For example, R14 is not only a balanced, top performing blend for wear tolerance but also top rated for recovery; strengthened with the inclusion of new cultivar Cameron which has the highest score for recovery in Turfgrass Seed 2021 CRICKET SQUARES & OUTFIELDS A balanced blend is just as important for cricket squares. Ultra fine dwarf rye blends such as R9 with low crowns and fast recovery from very close mowing (especially when frequent rotation of pitches is needed) provide a combination of desirable characteristics for cricket squares to help promote even coverage. R9 is also recommended for overseeding cricket outfields used as winter sports pitches. Extremely hard wearing and with two of the best rated cultivars Angelina and Cameron for very fast recovery. This R9 mixture can cope much better than a “traditional sports rye blend, when mowing height is drastically reduced back down from sports pitch height to outfield height 40

ACHIEVING A FIRMER PLAYING SURFACE eadland Amenity have announced the introduction of a new granular version of their popular penetrant wetter Terafirm™. Suitable for use in all fine and coarse turf situations, the Terafirm™ range improves the downward movement of water through the soil profile, helping to achieve a firmer playing surface.

H

Terafirm™ is a non-phytotoxic soil penetrant, which works by reducing the surface tension of water to facilitate accelerated water movement and drainage. As a result, Terafirm™ also acts to speed up surface drying and open up pore space within the soil profile during

dry down by improving natural soil contraction. The launch of Terafirm™ granular, in addition to the existing liquid formulation, means it can now be applied in even more areas and in different conditions than was previously the case. Terafirm™ Granular is easy to spread on bunker edges, slopes, or other areas where access with a sprayer is difficult. Containing the same active ingredient as in liquid Terafirm™, use of the granular product is an effective alternative to spraying. Although no chemical penetrant can, in itself, alter the physical properties of soil that determine drainage rates,

Terafirm™ will help get the water out as quickly as the physical properties of the soil allow. Applications of Terafirm™ can be made on a monthly or more frequent basis, most-effectively before the onset of seasonal periods of heavy moisture. As a spot treatment on wet areas, Terafirm™ can be applied at twoweek intervals until the excessive moisture conditions subside. Regular use of Terafirm™ offers the turf professional an effective tool to help maintain drier soil surface conditions, helping to reduce puddling and anaerobic conditions, and producing a faster-draining, drier and healthier sward. www.headlandamenity.com

Progreen pioneers remote training for PA6 (AW) qualification rom this month (February) sprayer operators will be able to gain their PA6 (AW) certificate remotely via an innovative web-based training initiative from Progreen Weed Control Solutions.

F

Launched in response to the impact of coronavirus restrictions, the qualification gives operators the competency to spray in settings that include water bodies such as lakes or ponds, and watercourses. Distributor Progreen supplies weedkillers, moss and algae control products, fertilisers and grass seed, also specialising in providing a full range of sprayers - including Cooper Pegler knapsacks - granule application equipment and accessories. The Bourne, Lincolnshire-based company delivers both conventional classroom-based training on safe use of pesticides and e-learning courses across many of the sectors it serves. “The impact of Covid has prompted us to adapt our approach to training,” says trainer and assessor Richard Wheatcroft, head of Progreen’s technical, training and sales team, who will be delivering the PA6(AW) e-learning package. “It always makes more sense for operators to complete PA6 (AW) as it completely future proofs you for all knapsack spray applications,” he continues.

44

Lockdowns and tiered restrictions have helped providers such as Progreen push the land-based industry forward immensely, he adds, “and by working with manufacturers and examining boards we have been able to place remote training and education on a fresh footing”. The PA1 qualification went online last year, in what Richard calls “a real gamechanger for the industry, as training and examinations are both possible from home or office”. Progreen is said to be the first commercial business to offer the Lantra remote training and assessment for PA1 Safe Use of Pesticides – the obligatory entry level for sprayer operators. Running online courses allows Progreen to support trainees if they need it, Richard stresses. “There’s no downtime travelling to and from the classroom, or overnight stays, and the course can be completed at night if necessary so operators need not take time off work, although the examination is undertaken during the day. “The training is run primarily for a qualification officially designated as a `Certificate of Competence` in pesticide training – PA6 (knapsack) being the most popular.” Trainees (at least four per session) only need access to the Internet and a camera and audio to complete the examination and they are ready to roll.

The web-based classroom courses are supported with real-time instruction and demonstrations using equipment such as cutouts of Cooper Pegler sprayers. Video clips of operating tips from equipment and Powerpoint presentations further aid training delivery. “Assessment will still need to be conducted one on one,” Richard

inset videos and photos during the training, ask questions and provide the personal touch by answering any candidate questions raised during practice. “We firmly believe that candidates will benefit from class discussion as much as they would from face to face learning.” Progreen also runs knapsack maintenance sessions for corporates in the same way as PA6 and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) for those who want to update their staff and ensure safety, while nematode e-learning is delivered in association with Lantra. BASIS-qualified technical advisors are on hand to discuss pesticide choices and to run through knapsack spraying equipment questions after training finishes. “We can also co-ordinate an assessor to attend candidates and to guide them in the assessment process,” Richard confirms.

explains, “and can be organised at our head office or the candidate can organise themselves at a suitable place for them.” The company is seeking to further enhance the appeal and versatility of its web-based classroom learning by offering PA6 (knapsack) and PA2 (tractor boom spraying) by remote training via multiple online platforms.

GroundskeepingJournal.co.uk | Spring 2021

“We will enhance this remote learning method by equipping candidates with a detailed workbook in advance,” Richard says, “providing full instructions about necessary equipment and methods for practising the hands-on elements, in their own time, ahead of the online training. “The trainer will then be on hand to run through the training workbook, utilise

Adds Allan Wainwright, UK National Accounts Manager for Hozelock-Exel, which manufactures Cooper Pegler knapsack sprayers: “The continued demand for cutaway sprayers among training providers is really encouraging and the rising number of requests for them for both face-to-face and web-based courses such as PA6 (AW) indicates their value in raising awareness about their construction and functionality.”

SCAG Windstorm Leaf Blower ticks a lot of boxes The SCAG Windstorm, supplied by STM Co Ltd, is a stand-on high-power cyclone leaf blower. With an engine size of 37HP you can see that the expression “high-power” is not used lightly. The stand-on configuration was developed for the SCAG V-Ride grasscutting range and has proved very successful as a format for ease of transport, visibility and manoeuverability. One such machine has been bought by Eric Gilbert for his Landscaping and grounds maintenance company. These machines are, as can be judged from the picture, quite an investment – but Eric has no trouble justifying it – and not just on financial grounds. The quoted performance figure for the Windstorm is 6000cfm and there are several quotes as to how this translates into time saved, for example: 6 men clearing leaf debris on a holiday park in 30 minutes turns into one man in 20 minutes.

Eric himself, working on big properties, has seen a whole day’s intricate work by two people reduced easily to one man in two hours. And when you think of full day’s work wearing a backpack blower you can see a further advantage as regards wear and tear on the operator, as Eric did himself, having had a back injury in the past. Not only are you not walking about wearing a backpack, you are riding on the machine, with its comfortable sprung operator stand. The machines are available through the STM dealership network. The Perfect cut every time ithin just a few weeks of renewing their partnership as official distributors for the INFINICUT® and TMSystem™ collections for Belgium, Cofabel had secured their first order – two 34” INFINICUT® FX machines to Belgian First Division A stalwarts Standard Liège. Complimenting an impressive list of franchises, Cofabel Sales Director Wilfried Onkelinx predicts a bright and busy future for the INFINICUT® range – with its reputation for leading cut quality and performance driving demand from sports venues around the country.

W

Operating from four outlets, Cofabel have been importing and distributing John Deere equipment for the agricultural, golf, park and garden markets for nearly 50 years and since, have grown their portfolio with a number of leading collections including

58

Wiedenmann and GKB Machines. “We are always on the lookout for brands that can enhance our offering and deliver the results that turf managers are demanding” explains Wilfried. “Clubs recognise more than ever that success begins with an excellent pitch – this allows for attractive football and in many cases results will follow. Groundsmen won’t settle for anything less than the best, and that’s where the INFINICUT® is now top of mind.” The first club to come on board was Royal Standard de Liège, where a conversation with club consultant Frédéric Cahay and maintenance contractors Devillers led to the purchase of two 34” fixed head INFINICUT® mowers in July 2020. “Devillers have been trusted with the maintenance of Stade Maurice Dufrasne for a number of years and they came to us specifying the

INFINICUT® mowers, having seen them become the mower of choice for a huge number of top-flight clubs in the UK. They are not disappointed! The mowers were put to use straight away, delivering an unparalleled quality of cut, stripe and finish which has delighted all at the club.” “Despite the challenges we have all faced with COVID restrictions, we have already seen phenomenal interest and have conducted a number of demonstrations of both the cylinder and rotary mowers.” Wilfried concludes, “As the reputation and visibility of INFINICUT® continues to grow across Belgium, we are expecting to see several football clubs, and other turf managers, become proud owners of an INFINICUT® very soon.” www.infinicut.com
