Bpi Auctions continues to innovate with new asset purchase offering There has been a significant boom in online auction houses over the last decade and it’s no surprise why. The continual need for assets to be replaced and updated can put significant financial pressure on businesses in the process and production industries. Auctions are an effective way of replacing machinery or turning unused or surplus assets into capital quickly. BPI Auctions now makes turning assets into capital even easier for its clients. In addition to the more traditional auction routes, it now offers its clients an outright asset purchase option. Upon agreement, payment for the machinery or equipment can be made in as little as 24 hours. BPI Auctions’ own inhouse team will then remove the items at a time to suit your requirements. This is particularly helpful for clients who are moving premises, have new machinery arriving or simply need to move quickly. 6 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

“Online auction companies have evolved massively in the last few years and as an innovative, service led company, BPI is always looking at new ways to meet the demands of our clients,” said Kate Worswick, Client Relations Manager at BPI Auctions. “We understand our client’s need for speed and flexibility as well as getting the best return for their items. Our outright asset purchase option meets this need. “The nature of every enquiry we deal with is different and our team of expert valuers and appraisers can now provide our clients with more routes to secure the best possible outcome for their sale in the time they need it.” For more information regarding BPI Auctions and any of its services, please contact Kate Worswick on 01924 245 040 or email kate@bpiauctions.com quoting FDPP.

8 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

A thorough Thorough Examination standard Having identified the issue early on, the UK’s two leading authorities on lift truck operations, BITA (British Industrial Truck Association) and FLTA (Fork Lift Truck Association) joined forces. In 2004, they launched CFTS with a view to establishing a scheme ensuring simple ‘one-stop’ compliance for any company operating lift trucks. After all, lift truck operations are hazardous enough without worrying about your Thorough Examination criteria, too. The CFTS quality-controlled standard gives employers the confident and comprehensive compliance they need. Today, more than 400 accredited companies – including major industry players – adhere to our strict guidelines… and for good reason. Our Thorough Examination process provides them with a robust examination framework. Importantly, it ensures the depth of inspection necessary to ensure employers are working safely and legally – wherever they are in the UK. The CFTS difference A good example of CFTS’ approach can be found in our chain inspection guidelines. Chains perform such a key role in your truck’s lifting mechanism and it is our view that they should be treated as such. For some examiners, however, this ‘testing’ is done visually. While visual inspections are important and have a place, it’s impossible to accurately check for chain wear using the naked eye. This is why competent persons employed by our accredited companies measure wear using a gauge designed specifically for this purpose.

And, just like a CFTS Thorough Examination itself, its precise (and replicable) measurements ensure operations are safe and compliant. As well as videos and interactive guides, employers can use the member finder to locate their nearest accredited company. Find out more The CFTS website – www.thoroughexamination.org – offers further guidance on Thorough Examination.

Metal detectors or x-ray? Three differentials food factories should consider The global metal detector market is buoyant and expected to reach an estimated $1.6 billion by 2022. Forecast to grow at a CAGR of 5.1% from 2017 to 2022, continued investment can be attributed to stringent government and consumer protection regulations. The industrial segment, comprising the food and pharmaceutical sectors, is expected to remain the largest end user of metal detectors. Given that investment in inspection systems by food factories looks set to continue, Phil Brown, MD of Fortress Technology Europe tackles the equipment options in the most widespread food and packaging application scenarios, cutting through the confusion on the pros and pitfalls of metal detectors versus x-ray. Choosing the best food inspection technology is not always straightforward. Some users gravitate towards x-ray systems perceiving them to be more versatile. It’s true that they have the ability to carry out further product inspection functions that are beyond the scope of metal detectors, such as spotting missing or broken products or checking the fill level. However, users need to be sure that any technical advantage will actually add value, since the pros and cons of metal detection versus x-ray can make it difficult to gauge which technology is the most effective and cost-optimised solution in

space usually favours metal detection, as do applications where the speed of the product passing through the machine is very fast or very slow. Maintaining a reliable performance over time demands periodic calibration and validation checks on both types of technology. In some cases, the process can halt production several times each shift. Users may therefore want to reduce the frequency, but they need to bear in mind that the longer the interval, the more product may have to be discarded or recalled if a problem with the inspection system is discovered. Care must also be taken that they don’t impede the passage of lightweight products through the system. Summing up, Phil comments: “It can be quite easy to overthink the options. In some applications, it is obvious which type of inspection technology to go for, since only one of them can reliably detect the contaminants that pose the risk you are trying to mitigate. As food factories strive to curtail rising food prices through widespread adoption of automation and sourcing ingredients through different suppliers, the risks increase incrementally. Installing a metal detection system is the first line of defence, with today’s technology on a par with, if not better than, most x-ray features.” www.fortresstechnology.com

Improve productivity and uptime with Preventenance

Food and drink manufacturers know only too well how much downtime on factory floors, warehouses, and on the road costs them, and any initiative that prevents such instances happening increases profitability and operational efficiency.

The new managed service runs realtime healthchecks on printers, scanners, handheld computers and other electronic assets to spot likely failures and enable pre-emptive and timely repairs/replacements to be carried out.

In 2017, Datatrade, a Renovotec Group company, launched its Preventenance service, which enables enterprises to be more proactive in their device maintenance and minimise downtime by pre-empting failures in their supply chain.

By having total visibility of assets − from barcode printers on factory floors to electronic proof of delivery (EPOD) devices in vans and lorries, food and drink producers can easily see, for example, when scanner batteries or printheads need replacing. The solution relies in part on a cloud-based

visibility solution where users can monitor the condition of all their assets from a simple dashboard. Preventenance is just one of the robust industry solutions offered by Datatrade and the Renovotec Group. The Group is the UK’s largest, and fastest growing, independent rugged hardware and maintenance company; no other independent supplier can match its knowledge and experience. This year, DEL has proudly demonstrated its new ultra-high-speed model, the HI-700 HS, at a variety of exhibitions and is excited by the reception the it has received from the market. The new sleek design, boasts speeds of up to 140 packs per minute and looks to become a highly sought-after solution within the next coming years.

As the marketplace expands and reaches out for faster and effective production lines, the HI-HS has ensured that DIGI keeps up with the demand and continues supplying equipment to compliment the customer’s requirements. During DIGI Europe’s research and development of the machines, they have made the appropriate changes to the aesthetics and mechanics, to allow for faster and smoother applications. These changes include alterations to the Concave Shoe labeller applicator which allows different shaped labels to be blown accurately onto the packs. The side frames are now manufactured in a square format to ensure the conveyor decks sit perfectly in-line, giving a smoother pack transfer. Also, a newly designed latch release system on the conveyor mean that the decks can be easily unbuckled and lifted for maintenance and cleaning purposes. In addition to adaptations, DIGI has designed new powered pack guides to index the pack at high speed, ensuring the pitch is set correctly when running over 120 packs per minute.

Making food safe to consume The customer has the legal right to expect food to be safe to consume, but who owns the responsibility for achieving this? Currently, so far as food manufacturing is concerned, it lies with both the manufacturer of the systems or machinery involved and the food manufacturing company. The machinery manufacturing company has the responsibility for avoiding all potential areas of food/drink contamination within the system. This includes minimising potential ‘traps’ where food can become lodged and become difficult to remove during cleaning. Typically, these might include poorly welded and unfinished joints, sharp

Powder Metering at ultra-low levels Bulk Solids dosing equipment for feed rates above one kilogram per hour are readily available. A few companies can offer flow or batch rates below 50 grams per hour however, for applications requiring true micro dosing at quantities below this, the equipment becomes difficult if not impossible to obtain. Trantec have been developing a micro dosing screw feeder capable of extremely low feed rates and unrivalled accuracy. Combining Trantec’s modern, in-house computer-controlled machine tools with their twenty plus years of experience producing Powder Metering Feeders, the “Nano” Feeder has gone from concept to working prototype in record time. Accurate feed rates below 5 grams per hour are now achievable. In-keeping with Trantec’s policy of continual development, the Nano Feeder is currently undergoing refinement and intensive product testing to iron out any manufacturing issues and improve production times, an important factor to keep the Nano Feeder competitively priced. Micro batch dosing presents numerous challenges which are simply not present on larger machines. The miniaturisation of the Nano Feeder’s components demands new techniques of manufacture and even tighter tolerances than usual. Careful design and experimentation have enabled us to create robust parts which can tolerate repeated handling in an industrial or laboratory environment. From the initial machine concept, Trantec utilised 3D modelling and highresolution 3D printing to produce concept components. The 3D printed parts were assembled into a working prototype which allowed actual material trials on feed rates and accuracy.

Smart Sensor CSS 014 Measures Temperature and Humidity

Condition monitoring is an essential part of predictive maintenance. This applies not only to enclosures and switch cabinets in industrial plants, but also to a large number of different applications in which regulated processes take place. STEGO's Smart Sensor CSS 014 measures two important parameters - temperature and humidity - and helps to maintain an optimal climate. Key Parameters: Temperature and Humidity

Smart Sensor, Smart User The CSS 014 Smart Sensor transmits the data it acquires as a standardized analog 4-20 mA signal. With this signal users can further process and convert the measured values within a control or monitoring unit, e.g. a PLC. Due to high measuring accuracy and signal strength connection wires with a maximum length of 30 m can be used. Thus, scenarios beyond the classic control cabinet application can be implemented. In principle, any larger, spatially sealed

parameters within the switch cabinet should always be under control. The permanent measurement of temperature and humidity in the switch cabinet is an important element in preventing condensation, which leads to corrosion and thus failure of components. And this is where STEGO's CSS 014 Smart Sensor comes into play, combining three functions in one compact device: a sensor, interface and transmitter all in one. The CSS 014 measures ambient temperatures with high sensitivity within a range of -40 to +60 °C while keeping a close eye on the relative humidity range from 0 to 100% RH.

voltage is DC 24 V (DC 12 - 30 V) with a maximum power consumption of 1.8 W (typically 0.4 W). Tested safety is certified for the Smart Sensor CSS 014 through successful approvals with VDE and UL according to the standard IEC 61010-1 / DIN EN 61010-1. STEGO - Perfect Thermal Management Since it was founded in 1980, STEGO has

Inner Values for Demanding Applications The sensor unit of the CSS 014 is thermally decoupled and encapsulated with a circumferential seal. Rewards of this effort: a high vibration resistance and compliance with the IP20 degree of protection. The protective lacquercoated board of the CSS 014 incorporates microcontrollers, interface drivers and EMC protection units in a heat-optimized arrangement so that any influence on the measured values due to waste heat is ruled out. A shielded M12 round plug ensures a fast connection and safely transmits the signals of the two measuring channels for processing.

Barton’s hygienic seal benefits bakery installation Aptech (Powder Systems) Ltd, innovators in and integrators of bulk material handling processes, has just installed a 40 tonne Barton Fabrications silo for flour storage at a UK bakery. The silo features Barton’s unique hygienic sealed skirt design, which allows the use of load cells for accurate content management while keeping the area below the silo clean, dry and free from vermin. Commenting on the silo design and process equipment installation, Richard Cleaver, Project Engineer at Aptech said: “The client wanted a large capacity silo, but local planning restrictions constrained the design height of the storage vessel. Barton was able to meet the challenges of the brief with an 8 metre high, 4.2metre diameter silo. “The silo and powder handling equipment ensures flour is stored in a clean, de-humidified environment which ensures clump free movement and eliminates the possibility of mould growth. The new installation provides automatic dispensing of flour to the customer’s production line, which saves both time and labour.”

A double door design incorporated into Barton’s silo supplied to Aptech allows easy access to the ‘below silo’ area for ease of maintenance of the bulk material handling equipment. www.bartonfabs.co.uk

FIPA in practice: Restack packages and sacks by pressing a button Ergonomic workplaces take the strain off personnel while increasing productivity in commissioning. IKEA Components in Slovakia also realized this and improved working conditions using FIPA handling solutions. Thanks to the flexible FIPA solution, the company can adjust perfectly to ever changing product and process variants. At IKEA Components s.r.o. in Malacky north of Bratislava/Slovakia, packages and plastic sacks weighing up to 35 kg are transferred from one pallet to another. This has always been rather heavy work. IKEA was thus looking for a versatile ergonomic solution that would increase their productivity. FIPA and local partner O.P.O. (http://www.opo.sk/) impressed IKEA with a flexible handling solution for five workplaces. The complete package included consultation, delivery and onsite installation. Complete solution with FIPALIFT Smart For each workplace the solution includes a jib crane, a FIPALIFT Smart tube lifter with all the accessories and three different systems that ensure flexible adaptation to the handling task. The particularly ergonomic FIPALIFT Smart tube lifter with a lifting force of up to 65 kg has been optimized for in-house logistics processes. Equipped with a Varioflex® bellows vacuum cup with a diameter of 160 mm, the tube lifter is the ideal solution for transferring and picking packages and boxes. The proven vacuum cup with two hardness ranges, 30° Shore A on the sealing lip and 60° Shore A on the

bellows body, ensures reliable handling even in case of slight load unevenness, thanks to the very soft sealing lip. The lifting device with the load can be easily rotated 360° for precision depositing. The FIPALIFT picks up or deposits the load at the touch of a button. CADfix PPS Automatic Simplification Solution Saves Time and Money The CADfixTM Plant and Process Simplification (PPS) software from global interoperability solution leader International TechneGroup Incorporated (ITI), is a user-friendly solution to help machinery designers and plant and process engineers achieve up to 70% reduction in engineering design labour and costs associated with large CAD model simplification. Plant and machinery design software users frequently need to integrate multiple, complex models of machines and large equipment installations. The CAD files supplied for this work can pose significant challenges. CAD models of complex machinery contain much more detail than is needed for factory layout and clash detection. The files are often extremely large and can lead to multiple failed import attempts. They also can cause system instability when trying to incorporate the machinery models into overall production line layouts. The machinery customers recognise the

considerable manpower. Investing in a data logger system that monitors conditions electronically is far easier – and comes with many benefits. “Let the cloud work for you” is a slogan that inspired T&D Corporation to develop a range of products and services that are easy to configure into tailor-made systems. APPROPRIATE SOLUTIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS The Japanese market leader for wireless data logging systems designed the EN 12830-approved RTR-500 product family. It consists of dust and waterresistant wireless data loggers, devices for communication and data collection, as well as inclusive cloud services and software. To fulfil the requirements of different surroundings, various elements of the range can be fitted in several ways. There are small and robust data loggers for monitoring differing parameters, including temperature, humidity, CO2 content, luminance, UV, 4-20mA, voltage and pulse. Base stations are available in GSM, USB, Ethernet (WLAN or LAN) versions, as well as mobile data collectors. Up to 100 data loggers can be connected to one base station, and repeaters can be used to strengthen data signals over distances longer than 150 metres if required.

60 FDPP - www.fdpp.co.uk

All features allow effective and error-free monitoring of large areas and difficult to reach locations without the need to install cabling or travel to collect the data. NON-STOP ACCESS WITH CLOUD COMPUTING As it is automatically updated, cloud computing makes data monitoring incredibly simple by overcoming time and distance issues. The free of charge T&D cloud was established in 2010 and has since been developed to offer additional valuable features: The T&D WebStorage Service and appropriate apps enable unlimited and mobile access to current readings and saved records. A watchdog feature ensures faultless operation of all elements and checks battery life, power supply, wireless signal strength and ready-to-receive-status. After a certain time-out, it also sends a warning message to the registered email address. Each account offers enough storage capacity to save data for several years, while an intelligent archiving system zips the oldest records. Alerts trigger the immediate sending of warning messages from base units via email, SMS or app. Furthermore, the RTR-500 base station can be connected with an external visual or acoustic alarm signal. Via the cloud, users can easily alter individual logger settings when required.

The system makes it easy to share data too. To prevent unauthorised access to stored data, users can receive a unique “read only” ID and password from the administrator that enables data to be viewed but not modified or deleted after registration. ADVANTAGES FOR ANY STAGE OF HANDLING Along every step of the supply chain, wireless data loggers offer a flexible solution for multiple purposes. Simultaneously, they monitor different temperature zones in various locations, with measurements automatically documented and stored without any requirement for manpower. This makes them ideal for use in laboratories, processing or storage areas where written proof of temperature is required, but they can be placed anywhere to track data – be it inside a refrigerator or storage cabinet, or even on the move in chilled transportation boxes. Thanks to a GSM base station with GPS function, it is easy to track the location of on-themove goods at any time. Via the cloud storage service, data can be shared throughout the whole process, such as between carriers, senders and receivers of goods. www.tandd.com

The Lindor Capsule©: Vacuüm drying and coating all in one machine With Lindor’s new Vacuum Dryer/Coater, you can vacuum dry products and coat them using just one machine. Applications include: rapid and effective drying of pharmaceutical components (such as APIs), impregnation and drying of catalysts, liquid and gas reactions with powders, soaking special plastic compounds, etc. A number of Lindor Capsules have now been supplied for pharmaceutical applications and fine chemicals. In addition, Lindor has a Capsule available for customers at her test centre in Dordrecht (The Netherlands). ADVANTAGES OF VACUUM FOR DRYING Vacuum enables a lower evaporation temperature, at which fluid becomes a gas. This allows drying under vacuum at a lower temperature, or faster drying at the same temperature. For example, the boiling temperature of pure water at sea level is 100°C, but on Mount Everest, where the air pressure is much lower, it is only 69°C. This advantage results in far better preservation of product properties due to a lower drying temperature combined with lower energy consumption. ADVANTAGES OF VACUUM AND COATING
