Child Care

MFRC Day Care & Out of School Care The MFRC’s full-time accredited day care provides an inclusive, encouraging environment for children between the ages of 12 months and six years. The MFRC’s accredited out-of-school care program is run out of Guthrie School during the school year. The program provides an inclusive, enthusiastic atmosphere for children in grades one to six. Families in Alberta are increasingly likely to encounter waiting lists while attempting to secure a place for their children. The MFRC maintains an extensive wait list which can be upwards of two to three years and is constantly changing. It is recommended that parents add their children on to our wait list as soon as possible. Phone or visit the MFRC reception to find out about fees and to add your children’s name(s) to the list. Placement priority is given to children of CAF members. MFRC Casual Care Ages: Birth to 12 years The MFRC Casual Care program is available for children from birth to 12 years of age on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and some Saturdays for either a half or full day. The program provides children with opportunities to interact with their peers while expanding their abilities in all areas of development. The Casual Care program allows parents to have time to relax, attend appointments, complete errands or volunteer with the MFRC. Children will enjoy socializing with other children while participating in fun games and crafts as well as indoor and outdoor physical activities. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and two Saturdays per month (April 4 & 18, May 2 & 23, June 6 & 20, July 11 & 25, August 8 & 22) Please note the 2nd Saturday of each month will be reserved for families experiencing a deployment. Half days: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm or 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm Full days: 9:00 am – 3:00 pm $11-$14 per child per 3-hour session, family rates may be available (fees subject to change) Register: Call (780) 973-4011 ext. 6300 or visit our front reception. Space is limited and based on availability. Casual child care is available up to 42 hours per month per family. Open to: Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) families are given priority but we welcome all families when space is available.

Emergency Childcare Service (ECS) The MFRC can help CAF families who qualify, to meet unexpected and unique child care challenges with support in facilitating their short-term emergency child care requirements. Military families are encouraged to have a Family Care Plan (FCP); however, families may sometimes face situations where conditions of service in the Canadian Armed Forces prove too challenging for the FCP to accommodate; when this happens additional child care support may be available. The MFRC may subsidize a family’s child care request through direct child care services, expense reimbursement or through the coordination of independent child care services on a short-term basis. A military family may be eligible for up to 96 hours of subsidized child care, or in special circumstances, reimbursement for child care expenses. Eligibility Emergency Child Care needs and eligibility are assessed on a case-by-case basis during times of emergency, absence, deployment, illness, injury or loss. How to Access • Weekdays from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm call (780) 973-4011 ext. 6300 and indicate that you are calling for emergency child care. • Weeknights, weekends and holidays call (780) 973-4011 and speak to the emergency chaplain or follow the automated prompts for “emergency chaplain.” Child Care Registry Are you looking for a child care provider or babysitter? If you would like to view the MFRC childcare registry list or babysitters list, please visit the MFRC in person or contact the child care coordinator at 780-973-4011 ext. 6314. The MFRC also has resources and information to aid in the search for licensed childcare centres, day homes and out-of-school care programs. Do you provide a childcare or day home service and/ or are you able to provide child care over a weekend, weekly or monthly basis while service members are on exercise or deployed? SwimAbilities®️ This group swimming program is designed for children with special needs. In SwimAbilities, instructors will break down swimming skills into small, manageable components with logical progressions and increased opportunities for success. Students will benefit from a slower paced program, visual supports, more oneon-one assistance, appropriate modifications to their programming, and a just-right challenge. SwimAbilities 1 These swimmers are working on developing comfort in the water with assistance. They will learn to voluntarily blow bubbles, submerge, and swim short distances with the assistance of a buoyant object.

Swimmer 4 Swimmers will swim 5 meters underwater, build the endurance to complete multiple lengths of front and back crawl, and whip kick. They will learn breaststroke arms, and try out the Swim to Survive® Standard.

SwimAbilities 2 These swimmers are starting to move through the water independently. They will learn to float, glide, and swim short distances, on their front and back without assistance.

Swimmer Advanced  Swimmer 5 Swimmers will learn shallow dives, cannon ball entries, and eggbeater techniques. They will develop strong proficiency in front and back crawl, and breaststroke.

SwimAbilities 3 These swimmers are comfortable in shallow water and are being introduced to deep water activities with an assist. Propulsion and endurance are being developed on both their front and back.

Swimmer 6 Swimmers will learn stride entries, compact jumps, and lifesaving kicks (i.e., egg beater and scissor kick). They will develop their breaststroke skills, and complete a 300m workout of front and back crawl and breaststroke combined strokes.

SwimAbilities 4 These swimmers are comfortable swimming in deep water with assistance. They will continue to increase their endurance and independence in deep water and should be able to swim confidently on their front, back, and side without assistance.
