COMMUNITY GUIDE Spring/Summer 2022

CAFconnection.com/Edmonton

Commander’s Message A new year brings with it an opportunity to pause and reflect on all we have overcome throughout the past year. I want to thank the community for remaining resilient and strong during another year in a pandemic. I am also extremely proud of our members for their commitment to making a positive difference at home and abroad, especially in times of need. Your efforts and dedication provided much needed support to many communities, including our neighbours in British Columbia during their devastating fires and floods. Despite the many challenges we have faced, our community has continued to come together to support one another safely during such times of uncertainty. With the programs and activities offered throughout this guide by our Personnel Support Program (PSP) staff, our Military Family Resources Centre (MFRC) team, we continue to be able to support military members and their families while maintaining a sense of community. Inside this guide, you will find clubs, fitness activities, personal development and parenting programs for all ages with opportunities to meet other members of the community either in-person, virtually, or outdoors. If you are new to Edmonton, we welcome and invite you to flip through this community guide to discover all we have to offer you and your family. The Group Sergeant-Major and I also want to wish you all a safe, happy and healthy year in 2022. Col R.W. McBride Commander, 3rd Canadian Division Support Group

Month of the Military Child In April we recognize military children and the important contribution they make to our CAF community. Military children face deployments, absences, relocations, and frequent change and we celebrate their strength and resiliency. Much like dandelions, military children go wherever the wind carries them and bloom where they are planted. Follow us on social media for more Month of the Military Child events and activities @MFRCEdmonton.

Military Family Resource Centre - Child care MFRC Day Care The MFRC’s full-time licensed day care provides an inclusive, encouraging environment for children between the ages of 12 months and six years, and uses the Alberta Early Learning and Care curriculum FLIGHT to guide our practice.

Emergency Family Care Assistance (EFCA) Does your family need to care for a family member in an emergency situation? As part of the Emergency Family Care Assistance (EFCA) Policy, military families may be eligible to access financial assistance to help offset costs associated with the care of a family member.

FLIGHT’s framework uses play to offer children an active, exploratory, creative and expressive process as they learn about and make sense of the world.

Military families are encouraged to have a Family Care Plan (FCP) however emergencies can happen that prove too challenging for the FCP to accommodate. The EFCA aims to provide support for short-term emergencies when other lines of support provided by the Canadian Armed Forces, Military Family Services, Director General Compensation and Benefits are insufficient.

Waitlists for day care spots are common in Alberta, so we recommend parents add their child to our wait list as soon as possible. Placement priority is given to children of military members. To arrange a tour, find out about fees, or be added to the waitlist, phone 780-973-4011 ext. 6300 or visit the MFRC reception.

If you qualify for support, you will be connected with a local service provider. If you do not qualify, you will be directed to other possible support services.

MFRC Casual Care As of printing, the MFRC Casual Care program remains closed due to COVID restrictions. For updates on this program please follow the @EdmontonMFRC Facebook page or subscribe to our e-newsletter at CAFconnection.ca/Edmonton/e-newsletter

How to Access Contact the Edmonton MFRC during regular business hours and ask to speak to someone about emergency child care. A Family Support Worker will guide you through a series of questions to assess your eligibility for support under the EFCA policy.

Child Care Registry The MFRC Child Care Registry connects military families and childcare providers. Are you looking for child care? The MFRC has a list of childcare providers and babysitters to help you in your search. Visit us or call 780-973-4011 ext. 6300 to get the list, as well as helpful resources to help you find a suitable place for your child. Are you a childcare provider? Families need childcare/day home providers and babysitters who can provide care over a weekend, weekly or monthly basis while a member is away for work. To be added to our registry visit us or call 780-973-4011 ext. 6300 to get an application form.

On weekends, weeknights or holidays, call the Family Information Line at 1-800-866-4546 and ask to speak to an emergency child care representative. Reimbursement There is no cost to military families for using these services. Depending on the situation, you may need to cover the cost of services up front then be later reimbursed. Reimbursements will be issued by either Military Family Services or your local MFRC, but not by both. Program duration The EFCA Policy was enacted to replace the Military Family Service Program Emergency Child Care Policy. Respect in the CAF Workshop The “Respect in the CAF” workshop is an interactive curriculum intended to promote respect in the CAF through awareness and understanding, to empower CAF members to take a stand against sexual misconduct and to support victims. Because of the limits of time, the workshop does not provide a detailed account of the laws governing sexual assault nor does it address issues which influence patterns of violence and abuse in the military, such as post deployment adjustment or mental health disorders. Nevertheless, this workshop is designed to foster a sustained change in attitudes and behaviours in order to build a respectful climate and culture within the CAF. This workshop is currently open for Military members only. The “Respect in the CAF” workshop consists of the following three modules and objectives: Module 1 – The nature and magnitude of sexual misconduct in the CAF, Module 2 – Bystander Intervention, Module 3 – Victim Support 8:30-4 pm I HRMS coded Appetite 4 Change (virtual delivery) Offers an alternative to weight-focused programs. The program considers how societal influences, expectations, the language used and the short-term approaches to “diets” ultimately lead to disappointment and failure. Participants will also have an opportunity to participate in cook-a-longs to learn and try new things. Monday evenings via a virtual meeting (1 to ½ hours) 6 weeks

2021/22 MFRC Sponsors and Donors

On behalf of the MFRC staff, board of directors and volunteers we want to say THANK YOU to our community for keeping the MFRC in mind through 2021. While Covid-19 has restricted our ability to gather over the last two years, we have remained open to provide essential programs and services in the areas of Mental Health and Wellness, Child and Youth Development and Parenting Support, Community Development and Integration, and Deployment Support. Meaningful donations and strong community partnerships enable the MFRC to continue to provide programs and services as we move forward with pandemic considerations in view, mindful of families and the unique challenges that come with military life. As the only local non-profit organization nationally mandated as the frontline service provider to Canadian military families, the strength behind the uniform, we offer a strong community to support our troops at home and abroad. The MFRC is here to make a difference in the lives of military families whether they are wishing to feel connected in a new community, looking for peer-support, or seeking tools to cope during a deployment. 2022 offers new hope as we host our casino fundraiser in February, with plans to resume in-person fundraising events in the near future! We are excited to see all of you again and look forward to the opportunities ahead. Thank you to everyone for your continued support, generosity, and patience as we move through these unprecedented times. To donate, please visit us on online at CanadaHelps.org or connect with our Fund Development Team Lead, Amanda Dubé at funddev@mfrcedmonton.com

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT
