in with Canterbury Anniversary Day on 17 November. Ticketed events are always popular, so it pays to book in advance, from now on, and the sooner the better.

The hospitality scene has already started to liven up, and it will only get busier with so much to do. Again, if you want to guarantee attendance at any specific restaurant, event, or entertainment activity, dive in now so you don’t miss out.

While we all enjoy a great day or night out, many of us leave the specifics - such as booking or buying a ticket - to the last minute.

What to wear is often on the “last minute list”, however when it comes to fashion it’s also a case of get in quickly or you may miss out.

Exciting times lie ahead for visitors and Cantabrians, leading into the region’s annual Cup and Show Week, then the festive season.

Fashion, gallops, trots, the agricultural show, and all manner of entertainment will showcase some of the best that Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region o er.

A few supply issues has meant limited stock arriving at some fashion outlets, and late arrivals predicted also.

My advice is to get those race day outfits sorted now (hers and his), book to have a facial before the big day, and don’t forget hair and makeup.

This bumber issue has a few suggestions, so before heading into the busy season, sit down with your Metropol, a glass of wine, cup of co ee, or favourite gin cocktail, and relax. Plan ahead while you have the luxury of time on your side, and do make a list to work your way through.

FAB FOODIE Tina

10 October 12, 2023 Metropol
one on one

A lifetime love affair with food for renowned Canterbury cook, caterer, and tutor, Tina Duncan, came together with the launch of her self-published book, Plated, earlier this month. One of New Zealand’s culinary gems, she talks to Metropol.

Tina Duncan has always had a deep love for cooking for others, around the kitchen table, at dinner parties, or catering for thousands of weddings and corporate events. To mark 60 years of cooking, Tina’s now sharing some of her culinary treats and helpful advice with others, much of it in the form of her most delicious, tried and true recipes.

Today, Tina lives in Christchurch alongside a large family with six grandchildren, and still her favourite pastime is bringing them all together around the table.

Born and bred on a Canterbury farm, her love for food started literally standing under her mother’s apron strings, helping cook for a family of eight.

Dishing up full roast dinners by the age of 10, and dinner parties shortly thereafter, Tina has always gravitated to the kitchen to fulfil her love of food, and to share it with others.

Visiting the United Kingdom in the early 1970s with her sister, Paula, Tina met fellow Kiwi Grant Duncan and started a family journey of her own. “I spent the 1980s poring through Larousse alongside The Australian Women’s Weekly cookbooks, where dinner parties were the perfect testing ground for new and exciting foods from China to India, and when garlic first entered our kitchens in New Zealand alongside the trendy “avocado pear,” she recalls.

Tina and Grant’s life took them from motor racing to farming, travelling and catering. When she started working for renowned Christchurch chef, the late Michael Lee-Richards, in the 1990s, it was a move that finally launched her professional food career.

Swapping her house for a catering business over a glass of wine, Tina operated White Tie Catering for 15 years. A founding director of food Masterclass series Savour New Zealand, she found herself cooking dinner for Antonio Carluccio, Anthony Bourdain, Maggie Beer, Stephanie Alexander, and Sophie Grigson, among others.

The biggest change she noted, during the few decades in the catering industry was moving away from bu ets. “Only the first guests at the table see the food looking its best, and the food can be sitting out for too long. People are up and down to the bu et which also disrupts the dining experience,” says Tina.

Another change has been the move to “alternate plating” where two choices are alternatively placed in front of the guest at the table, for them to swap if they would prefer the other choice.

“I loathe this trend because people don’t necessarily get their preference,” she adds. “Wait sta carry both options to the table and let people choose. At White Tie Catering, we became experts at predicting how the numbers will fall and always have a few extras. It’s e cient and ensures all our guests are happy.”

Challenges along the way have been many; some comedic and some stressful such as the time she forgot to make a wedding cake. “Inclement weather at an outdoor rural marquee, poor behaviour from guests, vehicle breakdowns on the way to an event, disruptions to power, and water supplies drying up at a remote location, are just some.”

Her book shares her greatest kitchen poetry, the recipes she has used to raise her own family around the table, and a few stories.

When it comes to catering, Tina’s preference is always treating it like entertaining at home. “Either be family style (sharing food that’s placed on the table), or a complete plate of food, with no choice. People make the mistake of o ering too many options to try and please everyone. Just serve the food YOU love,” she says.

Arguably one of New Zealand’s greatest sportsmen, and certainly its best golfer, Sir Bob Charles firmly believes his healthy lifestyle has stood him in good stead during his 87 years to date.

Golf has played a major role in his life for many decades, and Sir Bob still plays regularly, both with a set of Hickory clubs dating back to the beginnings of golf, and with a modern set.

Performance wise he loses little with the Hickory clubs despite the latest technology that goes into a modern set of clubs. He still comfortably beats his age in scoring. In fact, on a recent visit to family in the United Kingdom, he shot a 69 at Royal Wimbledon, amazingly one-under par.

His parents were keen golfers, which he says was a good start for a healthy lifestyle. “Dad got down to a 2 handicap, and was also a good cricketer, while Mum was a good rifle shot. They both loved their tennis when I was small living in Martinborough. Tennis and cricket were my other two main sports. I was an opening batsman and leg spin bowler, a bit of an allrounder. I played rugby until an injury when I was 12 ended that.”

His family lived in Greytown, then Masterton until he was 20, and the closeness of the local golf course (less than a mile away) firmly cemented his love of the game. Joining the club as soon as he was of age (15), the young Bob started with a 10 handicap, and was down to 3 within a few weeks. By the age of 17, he was on a plus handicap, dropping to plus 3 as an amateur golfer.

Interestingly, Sir Bob Charles plays tennis right-handed, while with two handed sports, such as cricket and golf, he plays lefthanded.

Always of lean physique, he says that golf is one of the healthiest sports men and women can play. “An 18-hole round can be a nineor 10-kilometre walk.

“Walking 18 holes at least five days a week is healthy exercise. Walking on grass you’re also cushioned.”

Jogging entered his exercise curriculum in 1972, while playing the US PGA Tour with best friend Gary Player. “We were staying together in New York, and he said, ‘let’s go for a run’. So, I did a little jogging. Gary was the epitome of health as far as exercise was concerned. He does 200 push-ups every day before breakfast, that sort of thing. My motto with exercise has always been moderation. I continued a jogging programme on Gary’s advice.

“In the UK we would play tournaments at Turnberry in Scotland, where the hotel is on the golf course and there is a lighthouse on the ninth hole. Two or three times a week during a tournament we would run out to the lighthouse and back, about an eightkilometre run.”

Sir Bob remembers when “senior golf” entered his life, at age 50.

“A big hospital in Los Angeles carried out free health checks, then decided to put a huge truck at golfing events, with treadmills, cycles, weights, and other fitness aids for players to use.

I religiously used that facility for about 30 minutes generally after a round. This went on for many years on tour. Another good aspect about the trucks was they were sta ed with physiotherapists and masseurs who would treat any niggles you might have.”

Sir Bob’s other health regimes? “I enjoyed swimming, and used hot tubs and saunas, which are good for relaxation, after doing my exercises. I generally used the same programme of exercise each time. Everything I did was in moderation, including meals.”

More recently, he started having problems with arthritis in his hands, and could hardly grip the golf club at the end of last year.

“I was prescribed an anti-inflammatory, which helped me quickly, and after a month I weaned myself down to two a week.”

As for his advice about nutrition, “Moderation with red meat, and eat a lot of vegetables and fruit.”

“I have oatmeal porridge with flaxseed oil and seeds like pumpkin. I am also fond of nuts, particularly almonds and cashews. Manuka honey is another favourite.”

“For me, regular exercise, a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition has been the elixir for longevity.

If you are good to your body, it will be good to you back.”

WOW WINNERS TAKE TO THE STAGE

The Supreme Award went to Nelson designer Gill Saunders for her garment, Earthling, making it her 13th WOW placing, seventh award win, and her second time receiving the pinnacle award. Gill was among 15 section and special award winners.

WOW Head of Competition Sarah Nathan says, “The stories behind many of this year’s garments reflect a range of important social issues, making the WOW Show not only a brilliant spectacle but a heartfelt showcase of the human

experience through some of the most outstanding pieces of wearable art in the world. As ever, the judges had an incredibly di cult job. This year, as we watch and celebrate the evolution of new technologies, materials and techniques, there is something very grounding in celebrating a Supreme winner that is 100% hand crafted.”

Earthling is the third and final piece in a wearable art trilogy by Saunders and takes its inspiration from the rising popularity of adult colouring books. Promoting mindfulness in a “world under

increasing stress”, Earthling celebrates earth’s natural wonders in a fun, vibrant, and beautifully crafted garment made from EVA foam, acrylic paint, and wire.

Taking out the popular Bizarre Bra section, were husband and wife team Kristy and David Kirkpatrick, from Tuakau, who created a ‘digger bra’, titled Groundbreaking. The winner of the Aotearoa section was a huge wooden wētā, Child·Hood by welder Craig McMillan, who took his inspiration from growing up on the West Coast.

Here are some of the winners…

Approaching six years in the retail business in Hanmer Springs, Mickey Raes is in full-on spring flower mode, with a multitude of exclusive and colourful ornamental daisies spinning cheerfully in the breeze outside the shop. These long-lasting flowers have been finding new homes at the rate of a daisy a day, reminiscent of Jud Strunk’s folk song.

Owner Wendy Lamont says the Hanmer Springs fete is fast approaching, although currently the village is like a fairy tale setting of quiet and tranquillity. “Locals and tourists, including many Australians, have been flocking back post-Covid-19, and it is lovely to welcome them here. We’re receiving plenty of accolades about weathering the hard times,” she says, making her proud to part of the retail industry.

Crafting supplies are still a large part of the shop sales, for hobbies such as knitting, sewing, quilting, and painting. In store you’ll also find educational interactive books for children, unique jigsaw puzzles, Diamond Dotz, haberdashery, and cross stitch, along with gifts, homewares, baby clothing, and pet accessories. Stock changes regularly, as does the selection of gorgeous wedding accessories, hand-made by Wendy.

From digging and sifting, to creating scenes for animals and fantasy creatures, building sand castles and creating tracks for toy cars, there’s endless possibilities with a sandpit.

The Canterbury Playcentre Shop has an array of tools, games, and toys that are perfect for sandpits. Some of the toys on o er include stack up cups, spades, drillers, rakes, scoops, sand moulds, and more. They allow children to engage in messy play, and are great fun in the backyard as the days start to get longer and warmer.

“There is also a lot of science that can be conducted in the sandpit,” says shop co-manager Jessamy. “You can look at how the water erodes the sand away, and make a volcano by mixing vinegar and baking soda. You can also look at the di erent textures that form when you put water in, for example, liquefaction forming. There’s lots of science experiments that you can do with the water and the sand.”

Buying a Lease of a Motel Not Yet Constructed

Occasionally we receive instructions from a developer to seek Purchasers for a motel business (lease) the developer is intending to build.

Advantages of purchasing at this early stage are:

1. There may be the ability to modify the construction in relation to configuration of units, the size of the Manager’s apartment, etc, to have input into the chattels and decorations, carparks, storage facilities and so on.

2. The new lease (usually for 35 years), has value.

3. You can plan the business during the building phase.

4. There may be flexible payment options.

5. The business will commence in smart new premises. Some disadvantages are:

1. Performance is unproven.

2. There is no customer base, so the business will be commenced from nothing, but it may appeal to an experienced motelier.

3. The time to complete construction may be unknown.

Weigh up the options, and decide whether you should buy an existing business, or look to commence a new business – there is a buzz in achieving this!

Back in balance

While the weather is taking a bit of time to catch up, the property market has launched full steam ahead into the spring/summer rush that is typical of this time of the year.

With many believing we have reached the peak when it comes to interest rates, the market is starting to move more readily with more properties being released, and open home attendance numbers growing. This increase in enquiry is heartening to see as it indicates a return to balance, rather than the peaks and troughs we have experienced recently.

With more properties coming onto the market, we are seeing the demand for rentals increase and for those who are able to do so, with a move from one of the biggest banks making refinancing the home loan the easiest I have seen in my career so far.

Our experience with non-bank lenders is becoming more prevalent as the number of people who are self-employed grows. Being self-employed is not a limitation to realising your property dreams. Numerous options exist with a number of non-bank and Australian lenders keen to expand their o ering in our local market, ensuring there is more choice in this space than we have seen for a while.

That said, there’s no doubt the cost of living is impacting us all, and NZ Mortgages are very aware that every borrower’s situation is di erent, which is why it is critical to get expert advice when it comes to how you structure your mortgage. It is definitely a situation where it’s better to be proactive.

Agile workspaces

Did you know that approximately 64 percent of business premises are the wrong size or designed inefficiently?

Modern workplaces have evolved significantly during the past three years, catering for di erent work styles, hours and needs. Enter the hybrid – or agile –workplace.

Essentially these digitally enhanced spaces support hybrid work forces and also new work styles.

To support those environments, today’s workplace demands require a new approach to organising and right-sizing business real estate, whether you need to bring everyone back, just a few, or to implement a customised hybrid programme.

Why go agile? Recent research showed that many businesses globally are using as little as 20 percent of their o ce space, now that more people are remote working, spaces were found to be the wrong size, or not designed e ciently, indicating huge ine ciencies in use and related costs.

Ricoh NZ designs, configures and rolls-out digital workspaces, enabling business teams to collaborate e ectively and get more out of their day, wherever they work. This also makes it easier to engage with customers remotely using Microsoft Teams and Zoom technology.

It’s not only about big ideas and it’s not only about thinking outside the square. Small ideas are just as powerful. To find out how to achieve big leaps through small steps, give me a call on 027 828 5335.

nonsense

The law is currently well-settled in this area. A restraint of trade is unenforceable unless the Employment Court decides otherwise. This reflects the reality that every worker should have the right to earn a lawful living, but if that worker wants to earn an un-lawful living, by stealing clients, IP, confidential information, or such like belonging to their boss - then the court will say no, that is unlawful.

This bill has decided only wealthy people should be bound by a restraint of trade meaning if this bill became law, it could only apply to employees earning more than three times the minimum wage. That is currently just over $68 per hour or around $2700 per week, and the maximum period a restraint could last, is six months.

And if you do want to impose a restraint of trade on one of your highly paid employees, you have to pay them half of their average weekly earnings for the length of the restraint. So (using the above figures) that is just over $1300 per week for six months - simply to enforce the restraint.

What absolutely mind-numbing ideological nonsense. This bill completely removes the focus on what restraints of trade are about - preventing unlawful competition - and instead would have you believe only wealthy people need a restraint of trade.

This bill simply makes it uneconomic for most employers to try and protect their business through a restraint of trade. Thankfully we have an election coming up soon.

If I can help you with employment law, email me at paul@pblaw.nz. www.pblaw.nz

Engaging adverts

Social media advertising can be disruptive.

It is common knowledge that social media platforms get a bad reputation for news feeds being plastered with advertising. Adverts that aren’t relevant are shown too frequently, or are just downright annoying, can disrupt your experience.

In my experience, the adverts that capture my attention are ones where I already have an interest in the product and/or service, or those that are creative enough to stop me in my tracks.

Here are a few tips on how to make your adverts more successful:

1. Limiting frequency

Be careful how often you are using the same adverts; there’s a good chance if someone doesn’t stop on your advert the first time, they won’t the second or third time. It’s easy to set and forget by creating an advert and just leaving it to run its course, so always consider altering your ads to find what works.

2. Altering your target audience

One of the main reasons social media advertisements can disrupt a user’s experience is when they aren’t targeting the right audience. Facebook and Instagram have greatly improved their targeting parameters, which means you can target a more specific audience. Finding the right audience is often a case of trial and error.

3. Engaging content

Arguably the most important element of successful social media advertising is the content. You’ve got to remember that your audience isn’t on social media to find a new pair of shoes, or to find someone to fix their leaky tap. It’s crucial to have advertisements that disrupt the users experience in a positive way.

INVESTING IN YOUR FUTURE

Sarah McLeod, co-owner of the Halswell and Wigram o ces with Harcourts Grenadier is a testament to that, as she explains.

“I’ve been working in real estate for 16 years. I went from PA, to agent, to manager, to owner, and had some time out to have our two girls. It has been fabulous to be able to change gears constantly,” she says.

Husband Hamish McLeod is also co-owner of the two branches. “If you are considering a change in career or starting out, you’ll find real estate an interesting and long-term choice. It is less about loving property and more about people who are great with people. We find those personalities can be any age or background,” adds Hamish.

With a combined 35 years of experience in the business, Sarah and Hamish are looking to share their expertise by continuing to recruit. “We personally don’t sell property anymore,” says Sarah. “We operate completely in support of agents in our o ces. Plus, Grenadier is the largest Harcourts franchise so you get all of that training and their marketing department expertise. The Harcourts brand opens doors to the entire nationwide network.”

Hamish and Sarah find that life in real estate gives you flexibility because you are operating your own business, and with their support, you have unlimited potential. “Every day is di erent; you never know what will happen.

“It comes down to how hard you want to work,” says Hamish. “New agents often start working with buyers, and they then have access to all of that Harcourts stock to sell.”

Their team sells throughout Canterbury, but the bonus of their o ce locations are that they are surrounded by over 34 subdivisions plus lifestyle properties. “We have a range of properties on our doorstep,” says Sarah.

Sarah’s philosophy is very much ‘do it once and do it right, with complete integrity’. The people focus is what drives her. “It’s about who we meet along the way, doing our best for them, and that’s the reason we come to work.”

A favourite element for Hamish is developing new agents. “I love helping them grow, and seeing their business become something great.

“Recently one of our new agents received the coveted title of Harcourts Canterbury Rising Star of the Year and we are extremely proud of their success.

“Embarking on a career in real estate sales is an exciting journey filled with opportunities to connect with people and achieve both personal and professional growth.”

Women from nearly every civilisation throughout history have used embellishments to decorate their hair. Native Americans incorporated feathers, Ancient Egyptians donned gilded wigs, and ancient Hebrews adorned their heads with a sprinkle of gold dust. In the 15th century, the Renaissance period introduced a new era of power dressing, and hair decor moved away from solely ritualistic or spiritual purposes. It is well known that Queen Marie Antoinette made the use of ostrich plumes as head decoration popular among European royal courts.

Today, a fascinator is seen as a high-society event staple. Worn on special occasions, such as weddings, red carpet events, and horse racing events.

At the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in 2011, many guests wore fascinators. There was notable media stir around Princess Beatrice of York’s fascinator and she sold it on eBay for more than $175,000 with the money going to charity.

In recent years, fascinators have experienced a revival in popularity. Influential figures in the fashion world have embraced these headpieces as an excellent way to elevate an outfit. Fascinators have also become a symbol of empowerment, allowing women to express their unique style while radiating confidence.

NEW SEASON TRENDS

Earlier this year, the family-owned company celebrated its 10-year anniversary, and, more recently, they’ve debuted into men’s footwear, via Mikko Men’s. Their stunning Spring/Summer 2023 seasonal edit is now available in Mikko’s brand-new Christchurch store, now located at 134 Victoria Street – conveniently right next door to their new men’s flagship.

Colourwise, there is an array of mood-boosting brights on o er this season. ‘Tropical Brights’ is a trend that Mikko perfectly describes as ‘Miami at sunset’; think rich papaya and mandarin, deep fuchsia, magenta, and bubble gum. ‘Lavender Haze’ is the catwalk colour of the year, and comprises feminine shades of mauve, lavender, violet, and lilac. Optimistic and uplifting, ‘Elemental Blues’ features a spectrum of hues from cobalt and cyan, to sky blue.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a season at Mikko without a stunning neutral palette. This Spring/Summer it’s presented via ‘Warm Mid-Century’ – think humble everyday tones of ecru, biscuit and malt, to ‘Blended Whites’, a spectrum of every shade from icy cool white to warm cream, ivory, and bone.

In silhouettes, there’s an o ering to suit all tastes. ‘French Girl Style’ is playfully chic, featuring timeless flats, points, and loafers, with classical adornments. ‘Grecian Goddess’ is another highlight, comprising soft metallic leathers, intricate woven leather sandals, and elegant low heels. For those who love to make a statement, look to ‘Superficial Adornments’; everyday styles are embellished with buckles, daisies, and diamantes, with the sole purpose of looking fabulous.

Ensure you get your dose of new season inspiration and make a note to visit Mikko’s new Christchurch store at 134 Victoria Street, or shop online; it will not disappoint.

Enjoy all that the new collection has to o er, at Mikko.

It is time to concentrate on having healthy, toned, and tightened luminous skin.

At iWellness, however, things have changed for the better, thanks to a lifechanging EMSELLA chair, a revolutionary, high intensity focused electro-magnetic treatment that is winning the war against incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction.

goes pink CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch is turning pink this October to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The city will have 10 sites glowing in pink, joining more than 60 of New Zealand’s landmarks, streets and prominent buildings in a global campaign to shine a spotlight on the importance of detecting breast cancer early. They are:

• Bowker Fountain, 9-16 October

• Bridge of Remembrance, 9-16 October

• Christchurch Airport Terminal and the Airways Tower, 1-15 October

• Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū, 1-14 and 16-31 October

• Christchurch Botanic Gardens, 9-16 October

• Fanfare Sculpture, 9-16 October

• New Brighton Pier, 9-16 October

• Robert Falcon Scott Memorial, 9-16 October

• Vaka ‘A Hina Sculpture, 9-16 October

The campaign runs throughout October, ending with Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s annual Pink Ribbon Street Appeal. On 27 and 28 October, 10,000 volunteers will be out in force throughout the country collecting donations for breast cancer research, education, and patient support. The Pink Ribbon Walk is also taking place at North Hagley Park on Sunday 29 October to raise vital funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Breast Cancer Foundation NZ’s chief executive, Ah-Leen Rayner, says October is the time to show support for the 3500 Kiwis (around 385 in Christchurch) diagnosed with breast cancer every year, and take action to end deaths from breast cancer. “Every donation makes a huge di erence as we receive no government funding for our life-saving work,” Ah-Leen adds.

The Foundation is still seeking volunteers in Christchurch to collect for the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal. Visit breastcancerfoundation.org.nz/bcam

STRONG FOR SUMMER

Next thing you know, you’ve dived in boots and all.

The end result is a niggle in the neck, a complaint in the cartilage, or a grumble in the gluteus maximus.

“The key here is not to wait, to get on to those little issues early,” says Charise Walter, practice manager at Muscle People. “Better yet, prevent them before they crop up with a specialised strength and conditioning programme.”

Muscle People was established in 1998, and now has three Christchurch locations. “We are in the city, at Bishopdale, and at Wigram Skies,” says Charise. “We’ve been treating people from all areas of Christchurch and Canterbury for 25 years now. Cantabrians know and trust our team.”

The practice prides itself in having a

strong team committed to a range of treatment options to fit each individual, and this enables them to o er an extensive range of treatment. This includes acupuncture and dry needling, massage and trigger point therapy, general physio, treatment for neck and back pain, sports physio, strength and conditioning training, shockwave and laser treatment, as well as prevention and treatment for corporate and work injury management.

With the goal of both treating and preventing injuries, Muscle People o er the Dynamic Spines programme. Physio-led, it is designed to help strengthen the core. This in turn supports the strength, mobility, and healing of the spine.

The team’s headache and migraine treatment is also sought after with specific physiotherapists specially trained in the

“Talk to us about where you are at, and what you would like to achieve, and we will get you started on the right path with the ideal professional,” says Charise.

If you’re doing your makeup yourself, here are some tips to help achieve a stunning look. A must-have for Cup and Show day is M.A.C Fix + Stay Over 16hr Setting Spray to finish your look.

PREPARE

Cleanse your face and apply an SPF moisturiser. Make sure you are in a well-lit space for the rest of the routine. Start with yor preferred primer, or try M.A.C Hyper Real Balm to protect the skin barrier.

EYES

Whether you’re going for a bold eye look, or prefer to rock neutral eye makeup, try M.A.C Connect in Colour Eye Shadow Palette for all your favourite neutrals and pops of colour. One way to avoid fallout, is applying your eye makeup before your foundation.

BASE

Apply your preferred foundation with a sponge, as this will ensure a flawless blend. Make sure you blend your foundation evenly on your face, neck and décolletage, being careful not to leave a visible foundation line. Try M.A.C Studio Fix as it’s a great

medium-full coverage foundation, fitting for all seasons and it is buildable. Apply concealer if needed. Set with a translucent powder.

CHEEKS

Use a soft flu y brush to apply your preferred blush over cheekbones, and temples. Use a highlighter, such as M.A.C Extra Dimension Skinfinish Gleamscape on your brow bone. Highlighter on the corner of your eyes will make them look brighter.

BRONZERS

If you love glow, use your favourite pressed or cream bronzer for a radiant, dewy look, and to give your skin dimension. Apply on the sides of your forehead, down your cheekbones, and on the bottom edges of your chin. A well-bronzed face will draw people’s attention to the centre of your face and make its edges appear sharper.

LIPS

The night before the event, apply a nourishing lip balm, such as Elizabeth Arden 8 Hour Lip Balm. Apply a lip liner, and top with your favourite lippy. Leave for a matte look, or add lip gloss for a luscious shine.

EAT RACE ENJOY

OFF AND RACING

As the days are ticked off on the calendar, and Cup Week draws ever closer, so the excitement builds at the Golden Mile Motels & Tavern in the heart of Templeton.

This place is everyone’s local, especially for people involved in Canterbury racing of both the harness and gallops varieties. The racing fraternity from all around the country love to stay here to enjoy Cup Week because of the ease of access to the Riccarton and Addington race courses.

Owner Murray Hollamby has a keen interest in horse racing himself. He hopes to have a runner in the field over Cup Week while another young horse is being readied for Christmas racing. So Murray is especially keen to greet like-minded racing aficionados with a very busy programme of activities, fun and a great atmosphere.

Our city centre brims with eateries, but a sophisticated spot in the suburbs is perfect for Cup Day with friends.

The Fig Restaurant is an oasis within The Elms Hotel on Papanui Road.

“Cup Week is such a celebratory time, and Christchurch embraces it, unlike most cities in the world,” says Food and Beverage Director Ravi Naidu.

“The Fig is thrilled to be hosting two days of brunch and bubbles that we just know our customers will enjoy. The convenience of a shuttle service to both Addington and Riccarton is a point of di erence, making their experience safe and that much more enjoyable.”

The Fig’s in-house Executive Chef extraordinaire, Mark McCracken has created a menu to transport taste buds and energy levels into party mode.

After a glass of Piper-Heidsieck bubbles, choose from six brunch dishes and four cocktails. Perhaps pick the Marmalade Fizz Cocktail with some FFC - that’s Fig Fried Chicken - or cool down the Huevos Rancheros house smoky beans with a qua able Mimosa. Then it’s o to the races, all for an inclusive $75 per person. Bookings essential.

The hotel is undergoing a fabulous multi-million-dollar facelift, so staying the night, or two, is a sure bet.

Over six days, from Saturday 11 November, everything you might expect from being at the races themselves is available – a Lindauer lawn, live music, complimentary food, great drinks specials, all the action shown live on the tavern’s justly famous crystal-clear big screen, and best-dressed competitions. This is definitely the opportunity to dress up. They have even set up a flower wall as a backdrop for photographs of splendidly dressed patrons.

Check out all the details of the programme on Facebook or the website.

Classy catering and corporate hosting

It is the gateway to Christmas and summer, but the party can’t start without our event professionals.

Cup and Show week will see the fabulous team at G&T Catering take a deep breath, and take a full immersion dive into all the roles that underpin the party for Cantabrians.

Building relationships and supporting others is central to owner Tom Lawson’s approach. “It is a crazy week, and all of Christchurch Hospitality comes together to support one another,” says Tom, “and we will be involved in events in a myriad of ways.” Addington Cup Day will see G&T duty managers, and food and beverage service sta at the ‘ZM on the Green with Bombay Sapphire’ area. “They will be a key part of making the day fun and safe for everyone,” says Tom.

The team will be creating gorgeous platters for a range of wineries that are focusing on corporate hosting, their chiller trailer will be on high rotation around the city, “and of course we have gorgeous weddings continuing throughout the week at our own venue, Larcomb Vineyard,” says Tom.

Whatever the occasion, using their expertise and keeping it simple for clients is what event professionals do. “We know what works, and at G&T Catering we are a totally solutions-oriented team.” www.gtcatering.co.nz

FOODIE SCAVENGER HUNT

THINK SEASONAL

Fresh fruit and vegetables are often more available and less expensive to buy during their regular growing seasons, which explains why eateries regularly offer seasonal menus.

Many foodies also adapt their eating to enjoy seasonal produce, swapping out an item or two here and there. For instance, try swapping tomatoes for orange slices or strawberries in a salad.

Spring is a time of abundance for greens such as cabbage, lettuce, and spinach, and also for growing delicacies such as asparagus, avocados, peas, radishes, and strawberries. Citrus is plentiful; think of oranges, tangelos, grapefruit, lemons and limes.

Imported fruits include bananas and pineapples, which are often less expensive in spring.

September to November is also the best growing season in New Zealand for vegetables such as artichokes, beans, beetroot, blueberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, carrots, celery, courgettes, cucumber, eggplant, herbs, kumara, snow peas, spring onions, tomatoes, and watercress to name a few.

Many of these are also plentiful during summer, from December to February, along with pumpkin varieties, mushrooms, sweetcorn, and fruits including apples, apricots, berries, cherries, melons, peaches, pears, and plums.

This fabulous event combining a Scavenger Hunt, Cooking Demonstration, and marvellous lunch is a fun way to celebrate Christmas with your team.

Created by The International Culinary Studio, you begin by meeting outside Rollickin Gelato at 98 Cashel Street. “Comfortable walking shoes and a jacket are de regueur,” says Cheryl Cordier, company director, “you walk a 90-minute route, answering cryptic clues along the way. You learn about culinary history and little-known foodie facts about our beautiful city. It’s not a race, you’ll stick together as a team, and bring your bank card in case you would like to support some local businesses along the way or buy a drink or two.”

Meeting back at International Culinary Studio, their expert chefs will demonstrate items on your menu, and then you get to enjoy your delicious lunch! During the meal you will link clues to the menu, to understand how it is created. Your lunch includes a mocktail on arrival, tapas bu et, and a three-course meal. This incredible package costs just $149 per person. “It suits groups of 10 – 35 people and places go quickly, so book now,” says Cheryl.

If you think you have sampled everything Christchurch has to offer, take note!

It’s an organisation that provides a comprehensive range of services and solutions for many matters that affect human health and well-being.

Food & Health Standards should be a well-known household name, but because it works by partnering with district councils across the country it has perhaps been somewhat hiding its light under the proverbial bushel. Now, with new branding and a smart beautifully pictorial website, soon to be launched, Food & Health Standards is proudly proclaiming its existence.

Food safety has always been at the core of Food & Health Standard’s work. Their team of 16 approved verifiers check that the food control plans that are mandatory for every business making and selling food products in New Zealand, are adhered to, so that customers can be assured the products are safe to consume.

Food & Health Standards are the preferred contractor to councils across New Zealand because of their exceptional history and because they have the critical mass of trained sta (verifiers) needed to carry out the work. And there is lots of it – over 1200 verifications every year for the councils. That is hardly surprising when you consider the range of businesses involved in the food industry.

Food & Health has other strings to its bow as well. It is involved with environmental health, with alcohol licensing administration and with building management services.

The latest of its projects has been to establish its own water division known as Aquify NZ, to elevate a work programme

Verify your Food Control plan

that Food & Health Standards has been involved with for many years.

The main goals of Aquify NZ are to protect drinking water supplies, to maintain safe and reliable drinking water along with the improved delivery of waste and storm water.

This will be achieved through essential compliance and monitoring services through a dedicated team of nine experienced specialists. That team has so far tested approximately 20,000 drinking water samples each year.

We are all safer for the work of Food & Health Standards across its various divisions.

CLASSIC KIWI BBQ

A stocked up chilly bin and crispy cheese sausages, nothing beats a proper Kiwi BBQ.

Whether you’re hosting friends and family at your place for an afternoon or a whole Christmas Day cook-up, a BBQ can be an excellent choice. Tasty sausage sizzles, scrumptious kebabs, and an abundance of salads are some things that are key to a classic BBQ.

Almost as much as the food, the area for your BBQ set-up is just as important.

The kitchen is the heart of the home

When only the best will do. Lacanche Ranges have been hand-crafted with the best materials in Burgundy, France, for over 250 years.

Lacanche Ranges may be customised in colour, finish and configuration.

La Maison France is the exclusive importer of Lacanche Ranges.

You’ll want to take time to consider the layout, where will the seating go? The outdoor games? Also, if there might be little ones around, is the BBQ at a height out of their reach?

Many choose the deck or hard concrete to put their BBQ on, a pergola or mechanised shade sail can be installed so that the assigned cook of the day can stay in the shade.

Here are some things that will make your BBQ day even better.

• Chilly bin/ice bucket for beverages

• Tongs for raw and cooked meat

• Sunscreen for everyone

• Smiles, and lots of them

If you put some thought into it, even a simple set-up can make for a great afternoon of entertaining.

Decorative

Who says twinkly lights are only for Christmas time?

You can get outdoor lights to wrap around trees, porch beams, and along fences to add something special to any evening outside; perfect for a nighttime spa.

For fans of fungi, you can get adorable mushroom-shaped lights to sprinkle around your garden; it will add a nice touch of magic. Many people will be familiar with smart bulbs. Did you know there are outdoor options as well? The same as the indoor ones, smart outdoor bulbs may be controlled by your phone. They display a range of ambient colours, making them an excellent option to cover a variety of settings.

Candles make a good economical choice for setting a mood outside, just beware bugs may flock to the flame and get stuck in the hot wax. Remember also that open flames are a fire hazard.

Functional

You can get lamps that not only produce a nice glow, but that also work at killing mosquitos and bugs in the area, so you can remain bite-free.

Available at most hardware stores, stake lights are great for putting in your garden to light up pathways and prevent a slip. They are usually solar-powered and won’t a ect your power bill. Pool lights make people want to dive in at your next pool party. They also work as a great safety measure to be able to clearly see that everyone is safe.

If you are looking for something more flexible, a large moveable lamp might be a good option, just pick it up and put it in the place you need it. Especially good for those who like di erent spots in their garden.

lighting

Whether it’s a romantic night in, an action movie night, sporting occasion, video game session, or just some ambient room lighting; being able to change colours and brightness is very handy.

Nanoleaf has several di erent options available, one (or more) of which will suit any room, home, or décor.

The latest in their range is the Nanoleaf Elements - a set of seven hexagonal, faux woodgrain lighting panels that look stunning in any environment. While only displaying one colour, the Elements can be adjusted for brightness, warmth, and pattern, using the accompanying app, or your preferred home automation system.

They look gorgeous in a bedroom setting (such as pictured above), or in a room with plentiful greenery or neutral tones.

For the more adventurous, Nanoleaf Shapes are a set of nine hexagonal tiles that can display more than 16 million colours in any motion sequence you can imagine.

Either use the app to create your own design, or pick one from a library of thousands uploaded by Nanoleaf users.

Shapes are also touch sensitive, so can react to the lightest touch, and to sound too. This can produce great ambient e ects on movie nights, especially for jump-scares.

Nanoleaf Lines are a set of nine connectable “sticks” that can also display any sequence in any colour, along with having sound activation if you wish. They make a fantastic addition to a gaming or entertainment room.

More than one set can be combined, although multiple power supplies will be needed after a certain amount of tiles is reached.

All wall-mounted Nanoleaf options use 3M removable strips, so you’ll need a few spare strips if you decide to change up your designs. They are remarkably easy to set up too, with the QR code and user-friendly app walking you through the whole process.

Don’t lose the moment getting up to close the blinds and set the mood. Lutron’s range of stylish motorised blinds connect easily with your favourite home automation system. Let the sun shine in, or keep it out, with a simple voice command or app control.

Congratulations are due for a special Christchurch business success story on reaching their 20-year anniversary in January 2024. As for most Ōtautahi businesses, the last 15 years have been a particularly wild ride, meaning there’s all the more reason to celebrate and share in the joy of such tenacity and success.

Pursuing a reuse, recycle, and repair philosophy long before it became fashionable has been the focus and passion for the team at McDonald and Hartshorne.

“Initially we began in our first shop in Aldwins Rd in 2004, and expanded to a retail store in Manchester Street in 2007,” says Admin Manager Neke McDonald. “Going into retail was no mean feat, and

not without turbulence. The site was expensive and the Global Financial Crisis arrived in 2008.

Our focus has always been reupholstery and reusing; in retail we forged ahead, promoting New Zealand-made with a splash of certain imports.”

The early-morning September 2010 earthquake sent furniture crashing instore, along with the showroom’s big windows. “We began by securing the store, as the pilfering had already started,” recalls Neke. Six months later, the February earthquake took them out completely.

“Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise, although it didn’t feel that way at the time,” says Neke. “As the three of us have always worked this business, we

had to split into separate locations to work for the next 18 months. The reupholstery moved to our storage facility, the o ce moved home, and what was left of the retail was sold or returned.”

In 2013 the team moved to a shared location on Brougham Street, while 2015 saw another shift to a larger shared location in St Asaph St. “The boys kept an eye on next door which is our final resting place, at 424 St Asaph St.

“Together, with our amazing skilled team, we continue to service the greater Canterbury region and the South Island,” says Neke.

su er Sleep cooler this

The quality of your sleep has a big e ect on your quality of life, which is why it’s essential to invest in a natural, quality mattress. While many people just accept that they are hot sleepers and put up with poor sleep, what you may not realise is that what’s in your mattress may be adding to your problem.

The use of natural products in your bedding is really important – while synthetic materials compete with one another and cause a lack of breathability and a hotter night sleep, the use of merino will keep you cool all summer and snug in winter. Local company Dreamwool Beds use thick layers of merino wool in all of their mattresses and believe the use of this wonder-product is more than just a feature; it’s a benefit.

“The merino is an amazing sheep,” says owner David Henderson.

“The extremes of climate that it has to put up with ranges from minus 20 deg C in the winter, and up to 40 deg C in summer. No synthetic product could handle those conditions.”

“Merino wool is a unique fibre that has the ability to work in both winter and summer to regulate your sleeping climate. That’s what makes it so great for bedding – its natural, all-around breathability. It’s important to have a good amount of wool in your bed, to give you that natural year-round insulation and comfort. That’s why we put nearly 10kgs into our queen-sized mattresses. Our customers tell us they find our mattresses temperature neutral, and sleep much cooler. We love hearing this feedback.”

The team’s focus is on simple, luxurious mattresses, which are filled with generous layers of soft temperature-regulating merino wool and 100% natural latex or European

pocketsprings. They’re made to be comfortable, breathable and o er conformity. Each mattress is made to order, and fewer than 500 Dreamwool mattresses are produced each year. The knowledgeable team make it simple to find the best mattress for your individual needs. They have thought of everything when it comes to a comfortable night’s sleep and if you head in to the showroom, you’ll be able to see exactly what goes into your mattress and understand the product benefits.

One of the best investments you can make for your future is investing in a better sleep.

Take the stress out of sleep and start to rest easy by stopping by the Dreamwool showroom at 96 Disraeli Street.

MAXIMISE YOUR GARAGE DOOR’S LIFESPAN

Maintenance of your garage door and opener is critical to ensure its smooth, quiet, and reliable operation.

Aaron and Hilary are the owners of Garador Christchurch and enjoy working closely with their customers. They’ve provided a few tips on how to maintain your door, prolong its lifespan, and uphold its warranty conditions.

Look out for small signs of a larger issue. The door shouldn’t be overly noisy, and it should open and close steadily. There also shouldn’t be a delay between pressing the button and the door beginning to move. Some of these minor issues can develop into bigger problems, especially if you’re opening and closing multiple times a day. Minor repairs are covered in Garador’s regular servicing. Choose a professional over DIY. While you should check your door regularly,

actual work on it should be carried out by professionals. Aside from the risk of causing damage, the large moving door can cause serious injury if you’re not sure what you’re doing. A professional repairer can diagnose any issues and help you decide what solution is best for you.

Adopt a maintenance schedule. You should get maintenance on your garage door 12 months after it’s installed and then every two years thereafter. In between the maintenance, there’s some things you can do to look after the door such as washing it down quarterly with a soft cloth. The parts of your garage door that you should pay particular attention to include the curtain face adjacent to the door head and inside over the top of a roller door.

“We stand behind our service and product at Garador Christchurch and

we file the warranties on behalf of our customers as part of our package,” says Hilary. “We also have a system for the servicing requirements, so we will send you reminders when they’re needed. We’re here to make it as easy as possible for you, and to enable your new garage door to run e ectively and e ciently for years to come. We can make recommendations and will advise you every step of the way.”

As well as being maintenance experts, Garador also install new garage doors and can repair existing doors. Give yourself peace of mind and let the team at Garador Christchurch sort everything out for you.

They pride themselves on delivering quality service and products, including installation of new doors or maintenance of existing systems.

The couch is the family hub, the place where everyone (often including the dog) can sit to relax and spend time together.

Unsurprisingly this makes the couch a place that quickly collects dirt, pet hair, and crumbs, especially if you are a big fan of movie snacks.

When you do your spring clean, add cleaning the couch to the list and with these easy tips, you’ll be able to get it done in no time.

You may have never noticed but it is highly likely your couch has a cleaning code on the tag, take this code very seriously if you care about the future of your couch.

Code w: You can clean the fabric with water-based cleaning solvents.

Code s: You can use water-free solvent to remove the soils and stains or dry-cleaning.

Code w-s: You can clean dirty upholstery fabrics with water

- or solvent-based products.

Code x: You need to avoid using any cleaning agent. Instead, have the upholstery cleaned with a vacuum or by a professional.

Take this into consideration when reading the next tips.

Debris – You need to vacuum your upholstered furniture often. Vacuum your couch using your sti -bristle brush attachment.

Stains – When dealing with tough set-in stains, the best approach is to let the stain remover sink in and then blot it away with a microfibre cloth. Use a soft brush if the fibres are sti . Pet hair – Create a DIY static spray by mixing water with a small amount of fabric softener. Spray this on the furniture and wipe o the fur with a cloth.

If you’re planning on having an aviary, select an aviary that will hold up well in a variety of weather conditions. Also make the aviary secure, so that not only the birds stay in, but so that rodents and cats stay out. Keep in mind that birds need more space than a dog or cat because they need room for flight and exercise.

Always place your aviary near a house window, so you can keep a regular check on your birds and ensure they’re in good health.

Birds love to sunbathe, so also consider placing the aviary somewhere that can get light but is not in direct sunlight.

To feed your birds there is a variety of aviary mixes you can choose from, and you just refill the aviary feeders when they empty.

To ensure your birds stay happy and healthy, take the time to clean the aviary walls once a week.

Birds require daily interaction and attention so avoid leaving them alone too long and seriously consider having more than just one bird, they’ll get bored without company.

Each bird has a unique personality, and some birds can live well into their sixties. Making this (near) forever friend an amazing pet.

DID YOU KNOW

According to Guinness World Records, the oldest confirmed bird is Cookie, a pink Cockatoo that lived to the age of 83 at the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago.

However Sulphur Crested Cockatoos and even New Zealand’s own Kakapo are reported to live 90-100 years or more.

Efficiency plus! Everyone I dealt with was experienced and I was kept up to date the whole way with the job as it progressed. I give this company 10/10 and I have never done that before. Professionals like these people are hard to find and it was a real pleasure to deal with them.

Keep pets calm

Car travel, vet visits, or home alone on cold rainy days, all cooped up together, can stress our pets.

When owners are o on holidays and pets are removed from familiar routines with the travel, boarding kennels, catteries or house sitters, anxiety levels can soar.

Environmental scents can help anxious, stressed-out pets feel happier. The Pet Remedy essential oil calming formulation contains a highly attractive scent that distracts pets from environmental stress. Pets can detect environmental scents at higher levels than humans, who might only notice a faint earthy aroma, while pets breathe in a heavenly scent of happiness.

Pet Remedy’s Natural Valerian-based calming formulation is suitable for dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, horses, and all pets, helping them settle in cars and kennels, and when separation anxiety or multi-animal households create unease.

Pet Remedy:

• Sprays provide fast acting, local calming for all pets in cars or on holiday.

• Handy wipes are useful for vet visits, walks, and attaching to cages.

• Di users are great for cooped-up, stressed-out kitties or dogs.

• Bandanas can attach to dog collars and are sprayed with the calming scent. petremedy.co.nz

A low-maintenance garden

Do you spend copious amounts of time working hard in the garden, leaving little time to sit back and enjoy it?

We suggest contacting a local gardening business to help you out with landscaping or take on these tips to turn your garden into a low-maintenance garden.

GARDENING TIPS

Group thirsty plants together. Install watering systems to save time watering by hand.

Build or buy raised wooden planters. They will be easier to maintain and save your back from bending over. Avoid hedges and topiary that need regular pruning.

Choose native plants as they will grow with less work.

Give self-watering plant pots a go.

Less lawn = less mowing.

Groundcover plants will give your garden beds a great carpet of textures and act as natural weed barriers.

Climbers are the perfect way to extend your growing space and you can paint or stain the surface before planting for a low-maintenance, high-impact look. Embrace a bit of wildness, if you don’t get hung up on the garden being perfect and emrace the quirks of natural, it will make the garden a lot less work.

Survive IN THE DRY

Canterbury is due for a scorching summer so if you’re planning on planting a garden, it might be worth thinking about drought-resistant plants.

Portulaca

Portulaca is a bright and beautiful low-growing ground cover with succulent-like leaves. They tolerate many kinds of soil but prefer sandy, well-drained soil and love full sunlight.

Dietes

They will adapt to the amount of sun they get but will do best in sunny spots.

Succulents

Not a surprise, succulents can survive a long time without water. Even better some succulents will flower if the conditions are right.

Flaxes and grasses

In Aotearoa, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to flaxes and grasses. There is a huge range available that thrive in sunny, dry conditions. Some are lomandra, libertia, carex, and phormium.

Better than ever

Spring is in the air, the weather is warming up and the city is absolutely buzzing.

If I do say so myself, Christchurch is looking better than ever. I was over the moon to see the news that the CBD has become even more of a destination with retail space in high demand.

Big retailers are practically falling over each other to get their own slice of the central city, and looking for a place in the heart of the action.

If you’re looking for somewhere to shop, eat, drink, or do business, our city is the place to be.

It’s hard to imagine, but with the swift progress on our new stadium, Te Kaha, this is only going to get stronger and stronger in the coming years.

And how perfect is the timing. The spotlight is about to head our way throughout this year’s Christchurch On Show season in the coming weeks.

I love showing our city at its absolute best to the many visitors that head to Christchurch for the iconic races during Cup Week and the New Zealand Agricultural Show.

It’s a highlight on my calendar every single year.

This is the season where our city really showcases what it has to o er. Christchurch knows how to host an event.

I encourage you all to get out and about, head into the city, and check out the action for yourself while Christchurch is On Show.

Looking to the future

For nearly 165 years, we’ve been the home and voice of business in Canterbury, and over the last few years, we’ve been working on what the next 165 might look like.

Our members are at the heart of everything we do, and we wanted to be ahead of the curve in anticipation of the changing nature of membership organisations and the workplace of tomorrow, so next month we will be transitioning to a new fit-for-purpose membership model.

Our new model will enable our members to choose the level of investment that best fits their business, and also o ers them the flexibility to change their membership as their needs change.

Think of it as going from Sky TV to a Netflix model. We have traditionally operated our membership tiering by the number of employees a business employs. Now we will be moving to a model that allows businesses to make a decision about the level of support they need based on their size and stage of business, with the ability to bolt on modules for specific sectors and as their needs evolve.

The uptake across the Canterbury community so far has been great, and we are very encouraged by the level of interest and anticipation from businesses.

I am looking forward to watching the impact our new model will have for our members and the business community in Canterbury - for more information or to learn more about how the Chamber can support your business, please head to our website, cecc.org.nz.

PowerUp campaign

Consider this year’s football tournament that was not known as “the women’s world cup”, but simply, FIFA. There was no need to prefix it. The game was being played at an exceptional level, by talented women, creating appointment viewing across Aotearoa and the world.

Recently, a significant mural was unveiled in the city honouring a group of influential wāhine toa of the past to empower the future generation. Created by Ōtautahi artist Kophie Su’a-Hulsbosch and Tāmaki Makaurau artist Janine Williams, the women featured achieved significant milestones for wāhine and made substantial change within our communities. The same day, The Christchurch Foundation’s Kate Sheppard High Tea recognised 130 years of women’s su rage, an incredible event that embodied female empowerment and opportunities for all.

That’s why ChristchurchNZ’s next PowerUp campaign launching in a few weeks is a very timely. Last year, women were identified as one group across Canterbury who were underemployed and underutilised, and PowerUp supported women into work with information, inspiration, and connection opportunities. The focus of the campaign’s second iteration is encouraging women into engineering and STEM roles. In the STEM workforce, only 28% are female. And just 14% of engineers in New Zealand are women.

The changing world needs diversity of thought more than ever before, particularly in tech and science roles. PowerUp is set to grow awareness and empower more women to solve problems and help design our future.

Event business vital

I have just returned from the Business Events Industry Aotearoa conference, in Blenheim, where all parts of the business events industry meet to exchange ideas and share knowledge.

It started me thinking how important conferences are for the businesses and communities that host them. The ecosystem of events runs deep into our economy. Associations or organisations choose to host a meeting for various reasons – to solve issues, provide training, or continue professional development, share ideas, build their brand, or to engage in business.

These organisations usually engage a professional conference organiser who works with a number of suppliers, including exhibition hire companies, audio visual companies, professional speakers, MCs, theming companies, and florists. They also book venues like Te Pae, and we in turn employ local people and procure supplies, such as food and beverages, from local suppliers.

When events are hosted, delegates come into our city, usually via our airport. They stay at local hotels, eat in our restaurants, meet up at bars and cafés, shop in our retail outlets, and catch taxis or Ubers. Some bring their families and extend their stay, going on to experience our tourism attractions, hire cars, and visit the regions.

Businesses which benefit from conferences, and the people they employ, run deep into our economy. That’s why competition between destinations to target conferences for their cities is so fierce. With some economic headwinds projected (maybe we need a conference to solve this), events are going to be more important than ever as a way of supporting our regional economy. For this reason, Te Pae and our partners need to double down our e orts to bring these events to our city.

JETTY OPENS

Closed to the public since the February 2011 earthquakes, the 300-metre long jetty was rebuilt as a community-led project, and opened at the end of September 2023, in time for summer.

Historically, the Christchurch City Council deemed the jetty unable to be rebuilt due to cost, at which stage the community gathered support to save it, and the Governors Bay Jetty Trust was formed in 2015. The trust purchased the jetty for $1 from the council, and has led the ongoing community fundraising e orts, in addition to working through the design and procurement process.

Council came to the party in 2022, committing to funding 50% of the total project cost, which was estimated at that time to be $3.5million. Financial backing by the council allowed the trust to sign fixed-price contracts for construction and materials, at a time when prices were increasing every week.

The trust has raised around $1.5 million of its share of the total project cost, but still needs to raise another $350,000. Currently it is seeking sponsors for the remaining 120 planks, with donations of $600 recognised with the donor’s name or short message a xed to a plank of jetty.

The original jetty was first built in 1874 and extended in 1913 to 300m in length. Built for transportation of produce and holiday-makers between Lyttelton and Governors Bay, its use eventually changed to that of a promenade and for access to the sea for leisure activities.

The new jetty includes modern additions, such as three ramps, two ladders, and a platform to meet the needs of those using it for swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, and other water sports. HEB Construction and subcontractor, Parfitt Construction, rebuilt the jetty, with Australian hardwood for the sub-structure supplied by local timber merchant - LMA Timber. Some of the deck and all the balustrades are locally sourced hardwood from Little River.

The trust is also working to move an historic boat club house, previously used as the Lyttelton Sea Scouts den, to the jetty site. This will provide an indoor area for training, an information centre, an artists’ studio, and storage for small boats such as kayaks, paddleboards, and dinghies.

Recently, I was struck so much by the constant use of the word ‘mentor’ that I thought I’d do a gentle dive into the whole topic to answer some questions about something I hold as a very precious and valued act.

Questions like: What does being a mentor involve? What can all parties expect from the relationship? Where can you find a mentor? These are all part of this large philosophical discussion, so let’s enter it together.

A mentor is defined as someone who shares their knowledge, skill and experience to grow another person.

Although it can be a commercial relationship, it doesn’t have to be.

I’ve been a mentor to a significant number of people and it’s been one of the most incredible opportunities I’ve had in life. I can share that some of the relationships were short and precise, while others have lasted years, and they have helped me become a better person just as much as I hope they’ve helped the people I’ve mentored.

At its core, mentoring is a relationship anchored deeply in trust and it can cover anything the party being mentored requires.

The relationship is intended to uplift, encourage, inspire and guide, with the desire for growth in many areas being at its foundation. It can also challenge and caution when that’s needed.

Not only is trust required, respect is also essential given it’s hard to listen

TheValue

of a Mentor

to someone who says one thing whilst doing another or who doesn’t have more than a scraping of knowledge in the field that the mentee wants assistance in.

I’ve had, and still have, world-class mentors.

Thank you, Burt, Paul, Sarah, John and Cam.

They have always uplifted me. I’ve learnt remarkable things about my profession, the world and myself, and I’ve also been pulled into line when the moment required it!

I pay them enormous gratitude and respect, and it’s important that the values you all have are congruent and aligned.

There are said to be three types of mentoring.

Firstly, one on one. For many, this is the favoured kind of space for imparting and gaining knowledge. It also safeguards confidentiality, which all mentoring requires, and there’s something special about being one on one with someone given the busy lives most of us lead. As an aside, this would always be my preference because it means I can focus more intently on the person and the job at hand.

Other mentoring can be conducted at a distance, invariably online, and here the mentor needs to ensure that they test and troubleshoot all devices.

There’s nothing worse than being deep in conversation and then to have a technical issue. It reduces time and

confidence, and given I’m useless at technical rescues I tend to avoid this method. There’s also a reduction in some of the clues you get when you are in a personal one on one and potentially the emotional connection that comes with mentoring.

Thirdly, there are group sessions, which can work for those who learn best in a collective and collaborative way, though it can be noisy and you have to be weary of big talkers versus those that never talk. It can be tricky. A mentor in this space needs to have the skills to bring the best out in everyone whilst having great processes for following up.

So, what haven’t we covered? How about where to find a mentor?

It could be a matter of going online to search and there’s an extensive number of companies and individuals available all at varying price points. There’s word of mouth or recommendations, and there’s also the shoulder-tapping of friends or people you admire and trust.

I’ve tended to work with people as a mentee from that perspective and I’ve never been let down.

So, there you have it. Is it something you want to embrace or consider? If so, I know you’ll find it, as I have, life changing.

TREME X MAN CAVE

MEET THE BUILDER

Creating this awesome new-build man cave proved challenging yet extremely fulfilling for those involved, especially builder Pete Bee of Senna Developments. Pete and his team collaborated and worked with CA Architecture’s Casey Curtis, and Hierarchy Group’s Chris Wheeler to complete the high-end project. Turn the page...

IMAGES by Ashley Bing Photography

Guts and glory in a two-storey

In the quiet of unassuming Lincoln, a bespoke boutique man-cave exists. Why commission a high-end timeless style man-toy mansion, you ask? Furthermore, how does one transform an endearing petrol-head’s metallic mission and rare vintage memorabilia collection, into a lavish, inviting home?

How indeed! When a 1990s relic, requiring a makeover, and a passionate collector’s dream meet, unparalleled design builds are born. The ‘how’ can only be championed by one highly skilled project manager/builder, successfully coordinating dependable sub-contractor teams, namely CA Architecture’s Casey Curtis, and Hierarchy Group’s Chris Wheeler.

Add a boyish grin to 30 years experience, an unrelenting dedication to a client’s vision, and you will come to know Pete Bee, the project leader’s driving force. Building an epic, commercial scale residential project was not without obstacles for this dream collaboration, including structural and height consent time frames, and re-engineering spaces to better fit an aesthetic point of view. The key is an unyielding attention to detail in workmanship.

Manufactured by Finesse Joinery, an internal walkway connects two levels of innovative craftsmanship. Mounted motorbikes, back-lit family photo-walls, and even a VW Camper van converted-DJ booth augment incomparable exclusivity. Inlaid brick, timber and metal, forged by Brent Brownlee at Art Fetiche, merge together in sophisticated curved walls that re-define textured living spaces. Upstairs, a bedroom tucked behind dark oak panelling, opens on to a secluded, decked barbecue and spa entertainment area.

Projects with this level of creative muscle flexing, rarely circumvent a company’s project inventory, twice.

walkway D
uri n g cons construction

As owners Dean Graham, Liana and family, enjoy their forever home, Senna Developments reflect on the crucial elements that pulled the visual wow factors together. Like good pairings such as cheese and wine, beer and rugby, they simply work better together.

The architectural design mastery of CA Architecture combined with the interior architecture by Hierarchy Group, helped evolve an expansive home structure into the intimate design celebration of what it is today.

“It came down to the use of honest raw materials,” says Chris Wheeler from Hierarchy Group, thrilled at the chance to create exciting ‘discoveries’ within smaller spaces. The buzz of upcycling automotive pieces into timeless decorative finishes allowed the design to evolve fluidly. The freedom for playful creative opportunities

is evident from the build’s conception.

A knowing smile from Casey Curtis at CA Architecture, remembering the sheer scale of an 11 metre apex roof pitch, and the many compliance battles won. The daily fun, sweat, and enthusiasm felt on-site by all parties was palpable, with sometimes up to 100 construction workers present.

When asked what the most enjoyable moments of the build experience were, creative scope aside, the ‘anything is possible’ directive, was the unanimous answer. Rarely are collaborative design teams entrusted to the level that Dean and Liana extended. Special moments exchanged in the communication process, are fondly remembered of a teary-eyed owner, overwhelmed with joy.

Senna’s legacy is far-reaching, from their involvement in initial earthquake home repairs to today’s ‘business as usual’, with brand new builds or renovation

projects all around Christchurch.

Adaptability to changing trends is essential to progressing business into new markets, allowing Senna Developments to continuously help Kiwis achieve the quality homes they deserve.

Prospective clients can now look forward to additional new build options with the company’s “The Living POD”, an a ordable high-end tiny home initiative. Perfectly functional for living, working, and playing in, this architecturally designed 35m2, ecofriendly POD is a self-contained modular home which is currently in its final stages of engineering and design. The Living Pod is uniquely versatile, conveniently exploring the comfort of cosy living, or potential profitability as an Airbnb.

“We have three amazing designers here that we pick and choose who would fit the client the best, and the project as well. We have the experience and people to back it all up and do a good job.”

Museum update

The Canterbury Museum’s redevelopment has been given a $10 million funding boost through the Government’s Regional Culture and Heritage Fund.

The museum will use the funding to build the base-isolated basement and storerooms which house the collections of regional, national, and international importance.

The contribution means that the museum has now secured more than $160 million of the $175 million needed for the construction phase of the redevelopment. This means it can finance construction through to 2026, giving space to raise the remaining $15 million to complete the building construction and fit out and a further $28 to $30 million for the new exhibitions and displays.

Further funding for the five-year redevelopment will be sourced through grants, philanthropic giving, and community fundraising.

The museum is being built in several overlapping phases, with a timeline to reopen at Rolleston Avenue towards the end of 2028.

info centre NEW VISITOR

The former post o ce building, above, is currently going through a major renovation and transformation. ChristchurchNZ worked with Christchurch City Council and New Zealand’s Visitor Information Network (VIN) to consider an appropriate geographic area for the central city isite to be located. This followed the lifting of the Covid-19 border closures, that had resulted in the closing of the previous isite. This work considered future city developments, transport options and also visitor flows.

Visitors will soon be able to get information from the restored former post o ce, right in the heart of the city. The location is highly convenient for visitors, surrounded by central city hotels, located by public transport, and bus drop-o locations, a tram stop, and near Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, Tūranga Central Library, and in the future the reinstated Christ Church Cathedral. Additionally, it is in the central city Wifi free zone.

Expressions of interest to open an isite were received from four parties, and VIN considered submissions, together with support from the ChristchurchNZ urban development team. VIN recently made a site visit to inspect the options and have made a recommendation on the operator and location that best meets isite requirements. The recommendation has three key conditions, including opening no later than 7 November 2023, the first day of the cruise season, and meeting all of VIN Inc’s membership standards, particularly around sta ng requirements, systems and signage.

The new isite will be run by experienced tourism operator Darin Rainbird (The Grand), who currently operates the Akaroa isite.

HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY

Business Owner, Stephanie Robertson had a clear vision for the company she wanted to build, and while the year has been anything but easy for real estate, she is proud of how much her team has achieved.

Stephanie reflects, “I believe as real estate agents, we have a unique opportunity to empower the people we work with when they are making some of the biggest decisions of their life. Not only providing clients with knowledge and expertise so they understand the opportunities and challenges buying or selling a home can present, but also by having open and engaged relationships with clients so their real estate investments reflect their whole life.”

It’s that wide lens and yet laser focus approach that has seen the company grow into a strong team of united agents. Stephanie prioritises regular one-to-one mentoring sessions with her team, to support and encourage them in their professional, personal and financial goals. In the same way they work with a house buyer or vendor, this personal investment has seen the team achieve much more than just a strong portfolio of houses on the market.

With an outward focus and a desire to share their success, VVVRE has sponsored junior local sports clubs and individuals throughout the year, and is

the O cial Real Estate Partner of the Canterbury Cricket Association, and a Major Partner of the Canterbury Magicians T20 Smash Competition for 2023/2024 Season.

Giving people an opportunity to go after their sporting dreams is something that is close to Stephanie’s heart. A half marathon runner, Stephanie knows how achieving a physical or health goal can a ect every aspect of our life.

“It gives you the confidence to know you have the resilience and discipline to succeed, and you can apply that mind-set in your work. I’m a wife and mum of four running a business in a highly competitive industry, so I know how important it is to have support and encouragement around you to go after your dreams. I want to inspire my family and the people I work with to follow their passions and champion each other along the way.”

As you talk with Stephanie, you can see that her vision for VVVRE is as bright and as bold as their branding. With a great team around her, the VVVRE vision of helping people pursue the Kiwi dream is clearly stronger than ever.
