Javan rhinos are the most threatened of the five rhino species, with only around 60 individuals that live only in Ujung Kulon National Park in Java, Indonesia. During the good days in the past, these majestic creatures inhabited lands across large part of Southeast Asia, from near Calcutta in India, throughout Bangladesh, southern China, Laos, Vietnam Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, the Large Island of Sumatra, and the western half of Java. These Rhinos have a dusky grey coloured skin with a number loose folds giving the appearance of armour plating. They also have a characteristic single horn of about 10 inches. Rhino horn has the same horn structure as the hooves of horses and re grows if broken off. It is not used for fighting, but for scraping mud from the sides of wallows, pulling down food plants, and for protection of the head and nose when breaking through dense vegetation. They are mainly browsers and often feed on pioneer plants that dominate in gaps in the forest created by fallen trees Javan rhinos have a lifespan of 30 40 years. They are solitary beings who wander the vast expanses of the forest cover on their gigantic bodies that easily weigh about 2000 5000 pounds. The Javan rhino showed the most dramatic decline of all three Asian rhino species, and by about 1930 Javan rhinos were restricted to Ujung Kulon, a small peninsula on the westernmost tip of Java and a few small isolated populations in Vietnam and possible Laos and Cambodia These animals were mainly poached for their horn and hide However, due to the Rhino Protection Units, poaching has been completely exterminated and according to the records, the last rhino to die due to poaching was in 2010 Because of this, their population has been slowly but steadily increasing, however inbreeding remains to be an impending threat to their population expansion.

ROTARY BANGALORE NORTHWEST PRESIDENT

ROTARY BANGALORE NORTH WEST

September was the month of basic education and literacy and October is the month of economic and community development Rotary’s focus on these two themes is more important now than ever, as the impact of the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic has a magnifying effect on the most vulnerable class of the society Our focus towards education secures the future of many families and in turn societies But just a focus on the future will not solve the immediate problems, Swami Vivekananda said “do not preach on empty stomach”, hungry people cannot be taught anything It becomes critical to make the vulnerable stable economically, for, as we slowly recover from the pandemic, it is important to take up projects which help alleviate the needy from the bane of illiteracy and poverty. Our war on polio is not yet over, the detection and reinfection of polio in countries where polio appeared after decades has once again demonstrated how crucial it is to completely eradicate this disease from the face of the world Rtn Jennifer Jones, President Rotary international, has committed an additional $150 million towards global eradication I urge you to create awareness about this disease on the world Polio day which falls on Oct 24th It is important for Rotaractors to register their names and emails with Rotary to receive communications and share your experiences and ideas with Rotary. Another way of exchanging ideas and sharing your experience of Rotary is through student exchange programs. This program has not only transformed the life of the youth but also moulded them to become Leaders I urge you all to take advantage of this program to have a glimpse of the program check this page www rotary org/en/rotary youth exchange your passport to adventure

MESSAGE FROM

THE SECRETARY TEAM, MES ROTARACT CLUB

Warm Greetings!

September marks the last month of the First Quarter, the Secretarial Team at MES Rotaract Club is moved by the consistent growth seen this quarter The threshold is set high for the forthcoming quarters This month saw many knowledge gaining events being conducted and participated in. Knowledge is always gained better when there is a fun factor involved in it and the projects of this month had just the right balance of fun and knowledgeable insights. The beginning of the month marked the successful completion of the first milestone for the team The Club Installation conducted this month was a grand success and filled with amazing memories that will be cherished by the club for long.

RTR. DEEPIT VISHWAJEET MES ROTARACT CLUB

RTR RANJANA J RAO MES ROTARACT CLUB

The smooth show was possible due to the immense efforts put in by the installation organising team and the board members. We are very glad to be a part of such a wonderful team who rise for the cause when the need arises As the President rightly said during the Installation, it surely is a “Dream Team”!

The success we saw in the first quarter is great motivation for us to abide by our theme for this Rota Year, INARA which means to Lighten up the Darkness We aim to strive harder at bringing a difference in the society and making this world a better place to live in and justify the Tagline of the Club , which goes by “If not us, then who?”

06

The club is elated to announce the theme for the Rota year 2022 23 “INARA”, an Arabic origin word, which means to “Lighten up the Darkness” and our tagline is “If not us, then who?”. This is indeed a question worth introspecting.

The club came up with 5 main avenues that we are going to focus upon this year: Gender Inequality, Social Injustice, Climate Crisis, Illiteracy, Animal Cruelty.

With no restrictions bound to just these five avenues, we have with us a plan of many more activities that have the sole purpose of service and building better bonds with the people, animals and the environment as a whole.

The world needs a guiding light so let us all put in our utmost contribution and be a ray of hope to society.

The logo depicts the theme of the year, INARA which means to lighten up the darkness. This is depicted by a Feather that appears to be transforming the dark aspects into brightness.

The metallic feather depicts the strength of the team to work towards bringing about changes in the society The elementary features of the feather depicts the fragility of the various problems to be addressed like social injustice, animal cruelty, lack of education The feather is symbolised as a shield of hope that is always there to protect and nourish the society, that is in turn causing the circle of brightness. The complete Circle illustrates that there is neither a beginning nor an end to Hope and Happiness The dark semicircular ring portrays the overlapping canopy of negativity in the world that needs to be eradicated.

The semicircular ring consisting of bright clouds symbolically emphasises upon the changes brought about in the society like gender equality, reduced emissions, basic literacy for the children and unity among people.

CREATIVE y p

But my mind always says there are yet more to explore When I move away from darkness to light, Yet there is my shadow following me right?

When I was a child, I would say Moons and stars followed all my way I would always have this fearful feeling That an invisible eye is always seeing

While traveling, my own thoughts lock me in a cave Yet there is a release from it, by a cool breeze wave The shadow of mine experiences my tears Sometimes it also enjoys the moment of my cheers

Wherever I go..

My heart and soul says yet more, And the Divine power always helps me out from my sore.
