ABOUT THIS ISSUE

Illuminate the title for the newsletter sequence of the MES Rotaract Club for the year 2022 23 aims at presenting to its audience the activities and growth of the club as the year progresses.

These factors combined in creative ways and presented to keep our audience informed about our performance. Happy reading.

Illuminate also has a specific aim at enlightening the audience about the endangered species of animals in its different editions, this edition of the newsletter circles around the Amur Leopard, an endangered animal.

The first edition of Illuminate is a compilation of club updates that consists of the team for this dynamic year, the projects completed by the club in the first month of this journey and the creative mind's artwork in the conclusion of the newsletter.

Amur leopards are critically endangered species native to the Amur Heilong Landscape region that is spread over the southeastern Russia and northern China. It is considered one of the rarest cats on Earth This majestic beast is called by many different names like ‘Siberian leopard’, ‘Far Eastern leopard’ and ‘Korean leopard’. There are only around 100 leopards left in the wild, their home range is mostly covered by protected areas now. These gigantic felines weigh about 80 pounds and are incredible hunters. They can run at speeds of up to 37 miles per hour and leap more than 19 feet horizontally and up to 10 feet vertically. The tongue of an Amur leopard has sharp pointed rasps, called papillae, which are used to scrape the meat off the bones of its prey They are said to be the most accomplished stalkers and climbers of the big cats, and their immense strength allows them to tackle prey up to 10 times their own weight. Amur leopards are distinguished from the other leopards by their paler coat and large, dark, widely spaced rosettes with thick, unbroken rings. Their fur is usually very thick to help them bare the cold weather conditions in its original habitat. The fur also provides a camouflage for these tree climbers. The Amur leopards are poached largely for their beautiful, spotted fur. They also suffer from prey scarcity because the prey they feed on, such as roe deer, sika deer, and hare, are hunted by local communities for both food and income They are also threatened by habitat loss The Russian government declared a new protected area called Land of the Leopard National Park in 2012 to provide a safe haven to these magnificent creatures. The park is home to 10 endangered Amur tigers. The bright side to the story is that the population has stabil slowly increasing too.
