From the Chairman – Spanner, September 2025
Dear members,
It’s hard to believe we’re heading into the last stretch of another fast-moving year Time really does fly when it’s powered by carburettors, chrome and good company!
The 13th Erfenistoer is still fresh in my mind the scenery, the laughs, the breakdowns that almost happened… and most of all, the friendships that make these tours so special. There’s something magical about watching old cars stretch their legs on the open road, proving that passion and proper engineering age very well.
A big thumbs-up to Mark Jones and the team at Halfway Toyota George. Their support went far beyond a cash sponsorship they offered a tow vehicle for backup, plus a media vehicle, and showed genuine care for our cars and our club. We’re grateful to partner with people who respect classic motoring as much as we do.
Speaking of teamwork, I want to thank our committee and especially the Erfenistoer organisers Chris & Rensche Kühn, as well as our treasurer Willie van Zyl Pulling off a tour takes planning, late nights, and a sense of humour thank you for delivering all three Now for some dates to remember:
•
• Annual General Meeting: Saturday, 29 November 2025 @ 15h30 Yearend Braai at 'die BENZ' @ 18:00
The AGM isn’t just admin it’s the time where we look back, plan ahead, and remind ourselves why this club exists: to enjoy our cars together. The braai afterward is simply our favourite way to wrap up the year: great food, classic cars all around, and the kind of company that feels like family
And then, the big one on the horizon
The 29th George Old Car Show – Saturday, 14 February 2026 Next year’s theme celebrates The Pioneers of Motoring, and we’re planning a standout display featuring BENZ history and heritage We are also celebrating the 20th Vettoer, and aiming to bring as many early veteran vehicles to the show. Trust me, you’re going to want to be part of it.
So keep those classics tuned, keep the wheels rolling, and most importantly keep enjoying every drive. After all, our cars were built to move, not to collect dust under covers.
See you on the road!
Warm motoring greetings,
Waldo Scribante Chairman: Southern Cape Old Car Club

Foreword: Welcome to the 2025 Erfenistoer
Dear Friends and Enthusiasts, It is with heartfelt excitement that I welcome you to the 13th Erfenistoer – “Legends on the Move”, a journey that once again brings together our shared love of classic motoring and the magnificent heritage of South Africa. From 23 to 27 September 2025, our tour will weave its way from the Outeniqua Mountains through the Klein Karoo and Breërivier valleys, right down to the Hemel-en-Aarde coast
This year’s route is rich in both scenery and experiences: a nostalgic movie night in Barrydale, National Braai Day at the Houw Hoek Hotel, a memorable visit to Museo Della Passione, sparkling wine tasting in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, and a festive seafood gala and prize-giving on Hermanus’s shore Each stop has been thoughtfully chosen to blend our motoring heritage with the best of South African hospitality.
As always, a tour like this is only possible thanks to the hard work of our organising team. My deepest thanks to the Erfenistoer committee, especially Chris & Rensche Kühn, and the SCOCC committee for their tireless planning and support A special word of gratitude also goes to Mark Jones of Halfway George, whose continued partnership makes this event possible.
The Erfenistoer is more than just a tour – it is a rolling celebration of friendship, heritage, and the open road Over the next few days, may you enjoy the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts, discover new treasures, and create memories that will last long after the engines have cooled. Let’s once again revive the spirit of a bygone era and set off together on this year’s unforgettable journey.
Yours sincerely,
Waldo Scribante Chairman: Southern Cape Old Car Club

On two wheels into the future of motorised mobility: Daimler riding carriage from 1885
Mercedes-Benz Museum Press Information
26 August 2025
140 years ago, Gottlieb Daimler applies for a patent for the riding carriage on 29 August 1885
Equipped with a high-speed four-stroke engine, the riding carriage is the world's first motorcycle
The technological transfer to the automobile follows in 1886
Stuttgart. “Close-up” – the name of this series from the Mercedes-Benz Museum says it all. Each installment tells surprising, exciting and interesting stories about vehicles from the exhibition. In the spotlight this time: the Daimler riding carriage in Legend Room 1: Pioneers – The Invention of the Automobile, 1886 to 1900.
No. 6/2025: Daimler riding carriage
The world’s first motorbike celebrates its anniversary: Gottlieb Daimler’s riding carriage ran for the first time 140 years ago. The riding carriage is of course part of the Museum’s permanent exhibition. Legend Room 1: Pioneers – The Invention of the Automobile, 1886 to 1900 also features an authentic reconstruction The original from 1885 was destroyed in a major fire at the Daimler plant in Cannstatt on 9 and 10 June 1903.
Technology platform: There are two simple levers in front of the driver of the Daimler riding carriage from 1885. The metal handle on the left controls the mixture formation, the wooden knob engages the drive system or decelerates the rear wheel via a block brake. These controls represent the two fundamental innovations that revolutionised individual mobility 140 years ago: the development of the high-speed, compact combustion engine to series production readiness and its successful integration in a road vehicle. This twowheeler, developed by Gottlieb Daimler and his colleague Wilhelm Maybach and patented on 29 August 1885 (DRP No. 36 423, issued on 11 August 1886), was the first functional road vehicle with a combustion engine – a milestone in the history of individual mobility.
Caution, ignition: The small brass tank with hopper and pump behind the driver looks like a petrol tank. It also contains fuel – but not for driving the engine. Instead, the small tank supplies the flame of the Daimler engine’s glow-tube ignition. This is the heart of the two-wheeler. On 3 April 1885, Gottlieb Daimler filed a patent application for the high-speed engine with vertical cylinder. The nickname because of its characteristic appearance: “grandfather clock”
With half a horsepower: Daimler worked with Wilhelm Maybach for two years on the pioneering engine In the riding carriage, the “grandfather clock” produces 0 37 kW (0 5 hp) at 600 rpm Daimler’s vision: motorised mobility on land, on water and in the air A short time later it became a reality, and in 1886 the engine was also used to power Daimler’s motorised coach, motorboats (from 1886), rail vehicles (from 1887) and airships (from 1888).
Inventiveness meets craftsmanship: The test vehicle combines the craftsmanship and mechanical engineering of the time. The wooden frame and the wooden wheels – as are also customary for carriages –belong to the wainwright’s trade. The robust iron tyres come from the blacksmith. The power transmission from the crankshaft to the reduction gearbox is provided by leather belts, like the ones used in the transmission systems of steam engines. There is no gear shift in the modern sense. But the belt can be placed on two pulleys with different diameters – this offers two different fixed ratios. The reduction gearbox consisting of pinion and ring gear is a piece of the era’s modern engineering. The straight handlebars were probably inspired by the so-called safety bikes with wheels of the same size developed that same decade
Balancing act with support: Daimler and Maybach equip the technology vehicle, which can reach speeds of up to 12 km/h, with support wheels to stabilise the ride. Although these make tight bends more difficult to negotiate, they are a welcome safety feature, as today’s journeys with the riding carriage show. While it is not particularly manoeuvrable –its main task is to demonstrate a road vehicle running with a combustion engine.
Pioneering: On 10 November 1885, Gottlieb Daimler’s son, Adolf, travelled the circa three-kilometre distance from Cannstatt to Untertürkheim and back in the riding carriage The vehicle idea works One year later, the engine is transferred to a motor car – and a new era of individual mobility begins
