Most of us live from one day to the next, planning or preparing as best we can, while not trying to look back too much. Except when it comes to our beloved Club...
As an esteemed member of the
Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa, you should have almost instant access to all digital versions of our club newsletter, the Benz Lens.
Perhaps you still have a few hard copies of the erstwhile A4 colour magazine, or maybe you ’ re lucky to own some preceding editions of this Benz Lens Annual coffee table book: which is essentially our club’s yearly “Best of...” compilation.
Did you know that it’s always been a limited, and hence quite collectable, bit of Club memorabilia?
Each year we only print a few dozen copies, with the first handful going to advertisers, supporters and other helpful friends of the Benz Lens.
ere’s even a rumour flying around that, when possible, our president Waldo likes to personally hand out fresh copies to other club presidents and the Mercedes-Benz Classic management in Stuttgart.
I also have it on good authority that there might be a few previous editions of the Benz Lens Annual in our Club Regalia archives. Chat with your regional chairperson or contact the Regalia team directly to find out which ones are still available.
It’s inside these publications, between the captivating photos and interesting stories, where one can easily get lost in the past. And although the book you ’ re currently holding only deals with the last 12 months, there are some amazing articles and stunning photographs waiting for you.
Each of our Club regions had at least one flagship event in their area, and these include (in alphabetical order) the Central Region attending and beautifying Bloemfontein’s Cars in the Park, Eastern Cape members invading the Maritime Motors showroom, plenty of fun with KZN’s Bunny Chow Barometer at the Brittania Hotel, the Northern Region professionally
hosting our Club’s 38th AGM and National Gathering, the Southern Cape co-hosting yet another wellvisited George Old Car Show, plus our Western Cape Region displaying beautiful cars at the picturesque Old Tannery Car Show.
Like any poor soul trapped in the imaginary web of time, I’ll admit that I would happily travel back to 2023 in order to visit some more of the many amazing events described above; or spring a few surprise-visits on most of our regions to join in their camaraderie and Mercedes-Benz chatter.
However, it’s considered unwise to dwell in the past too much, yet I would like to propose one exception: the beautiful contents of this latest Benz Lens Annual coffee table book.
Happy time traveling! n

Annual 2021 2023
MBSA Sponsorship
We are very fortunate that our Club is valued and supported by Mercedes-Benz South Africa.
We received an amount of R300,000 for 2023. is was very generous and greatly appreciated, particularly considering the many uncertainties of the time. For 2024, MBSA sponsor us with the same amount, and for this we are also very thankful.
Collaborating with MBSA, we were invited to the AMG Performance Tour 2023 at the legendary Kyalami circuit, where we had the opportunity to sample some of the finest AMG has to offer, as well as the newest EQ models. Our Club had the honour of displaying older SL's and AMG's, followed by a parade around the circuit.
We are looking forward to future collaborations.
I once again extend our appreciation to Mercedes-Benz South Africa, and especially Alex Boavida and Miles Bhana, for their continued support of the Club.
Our 2023 Highlights
Some of our major events of the year included the following:
• e Italy-inspired George Old Car Show, held in February, was an incredible success. Many of our members played an integral part, not only in their passion and participation as MB members, but also in the organisation of the show as a whole.
• e valuation seminar was well attended, especially from up North.
• e 6th President's Braai remains a highlight of the George Old Car Show with almost 140 members attending.
38th AGM & National Gathering
e Northern Region hosted our 38th National Gathering in Gauteng. An enthusiastic committee held nothing back and organised a highly successful event with 120 members and family in attendance.
We had a wonderful time, highlights being the track day at Zwartkops Raceway, a visit to the SAA Museum, the grand opening of Pius Mokgokong's Mokopotong Car Museum and finally a magnificent Gautrain drive to the Gala evening.
I had the privilege of bestowing a Hero award to Pieter Booysen. Sven Krassnokutski and Koos du Toit, with Special memberships awarded to Pius Mokgokong, Miklos Hegyi and Clint Weston from MBSA, for their contributions to the Club and the Marque. ank you to Anna-Lee Dos Santos and everyone who contributed.
National Concourse 2023
Sadly, due to a lack of entries for the National Concours, the event had to be cancelled.
Report
However, our generous hosts, Sandown Motors, had already gone to a great deal of trouble to make arrangements. Sven Krassnokutski with the help of Pieter Booysen, and with the assistance of Koos du Toit and the Northern Region, did an exceptional job of organizing the Special Spectacle of SL's, hosting a highly successful Heritage event celebrating the latest R232 SL43.
2023 Year-end Functions
Our Regional Chairs and their Committee Members once again pulled out all the stops for memorable year-end functions. ank you to each and every one who contributed to their time, energy and creative flair, ending a successful year on a high note.
René and I had the privilege to join the Western Cape's year-end function, a wonderful lunch at Webersburg Wine Estate.
A Meeting of Presidents
It was a huge disappointment when the Mercedes-Benz Classic Club Management cancelled our annual President's Meeting in Stuttgart. is was the first time in 30 years that no gathering took place.
It’s a missed opportunity for valuable networking, allowing for the exchange of advice and ideas. I have made wonderful friends in the past and through our time together I always leave feeling inspired.
Mercedes-Benz Classic Club Management and the MercedesBenz Classic Centre is busy restructuring and we wait for the latest news.
With 2023 behind us, 2024 has once again showcased the caliber of people with whom we are fortunate to share incredible experiences. It is evident that our Club's appreciation and the countless opportunities it provides continue to grow, along with the cherished friendships grounded in our shared passion for the marque.
Being a part of such a distinguished community of determined, supportive, and inspiring individuals is an incredible privilege. I am grateful for your friendship and for the dedication, energy, and passion you contribute. You are the ones who make our Club one of the very best.
May we continue to embark on many more adventures together.
As always, the best or nothing. Or in classic terms, Only the Best! n

A visit to Johann Rupert’s car museum in Franschhoek set the flames
raging in my head about having a similar establishment (a car museum), I remember pacing the building in order to get an estimate of the dimensions of one of the four buildings that they have there. At that point I was quite clear in my head that it was essentially going to be a Mercedes-Benz based car collection that would form the basis of the museum. But where and how do I start?
As I was mulling over the idea, my first interaction with a Pagoda in the late 60’s came back to ‘haunt’ me, so the very first project on my journey to establishing the museum was a W113 Pagoda 280SL 1969. I bought the car from a Randburg classic car dealership for R180,000 and drove it straight to Sandton Panel Beaters for a nut and bolt restoration.
e mechanicals were done by Colin Kean, another Mercedes-Benz enthusiast and friend. is marked my entry and passion into the classic car world and it started about 17 years ago. I’m proud to say that my entry happened this way because, right from the beginning, I learnt to order parts from overseas (UK, Germany, Spain and even the USA), plus the friendships that were established at that time are still good and active today!
I’ve always been a Mercedes-Benz person, throughout my life I have had the brand as a first preference to any other brand basically for quality, safety and resale value reasons.” n

He restored over 30 Mercedes’ during the last 30 years. His 300 Adenauer was class winner in the Group B SA National Concours 2022. His oldest is a 1949 170V.
He is currently part of the AMG Pro Drive development racing team, participating in the SA Endurance Series… and as we were informed recently, co-droving with Clint.
He is the founder and CEO of the Funda group, which is the owner of Fundawheels and the Mahle Classic Line distributor for Africa.
SPECIAL MEMBERSHIP
He started his motor racing career in 1997, taking his first
SA National Championship title in 1998.
Clint Weston is the CEO of the AMG Academy, he runs the fleet operations for Mercedes-Benz SA, is involved in every new Mercedes launch, and races in the GT Endurance Series; which they won recently at Zwartkops in the AMG GT3. He has also won numerous rallies and races; nationally and internationally.
To add a little spice to life, his services as a stunt driver are regularly called upon by TV production companies, mostly for vehicle commercials, while he also enjoys hosting car discussions and is one of the biggest Mercedes-Benz Ambassadors in South Africa.
We want to thank Clint for a wonderful experience during the Club’s 2023 AGM, as well as for his past support of the Northern Region’s annual Cars in the Park gathering, where we have had the privilege of using the AMG Driving Academy’s facilities. n

Northern Regional Review
Northern Region
The Northern Region enjoyed a busy 2023
with many amazing events, which included our Club’s AGM and National Gathering in Gauteng.
During 2023, the Northern
Region was privileged to have at its helm the dynamic and passionate Anna-Lee Dos Santos; who announced her stepping down as Chairperson at the 2023 AGM. We thank Anna-Lee for her commitment, dedication and passion for the brand and the Club in particular.
Regional Committee
e balance of the energetic and dedicated committee comprised of Jan-Willem Wielsma, Koos du Toit, Marcell Mostert, Christopher Dooley, Sven Krass de Krasnokutski and other ad hoc members who were co-opted to assist with the AGM and National Gathering hosted in our region during 2023.
Committee Meetings
An extraordinary amount of committee meetings were held, not only to plan for other events and outings, but mainly to plan for what we believe was the most
spectacular AGM and gathering to date! Well done to the committee and all members involved.
Events
e highlight of our calendar was undoubtedly the hosting of the 38th AGM and National Gathering at the end of April 2023, with 160 guests enjoying a fully packed, fun filled and memorable agenda over three days.
We wish to thank Waldo and the National Committee for their support and guidance. Our sincere gratitude also goes to each and every sponsor, without whom the event would not have been possible. In particular, we wish to thank Mercedes-Benz South Africa and Pius Mokgokong, who made his museum available for the hosting of our gala evening.
But ultimately, all appreciation must go to the Northern Region committee and the members who attended the event and contributed to its success.

Over and above the AGM and National Gathering, the committee presented and hosted 10 other events during 2023 for the enjoyment of our members. ese included a Year-beginning function in Klerksdorp, garden luncheon, a VVC Event and Mercedes-Benz Menlyn Drive Out in June, Christmas in July, the AMG Dynamic Driving and SL launch, POMC (Cars in the Park), Jacaranda Run, a Noggin in November and our Year-end function in December. Unfortunately the planned concourse did not proceed due to a lack of participation from our members, but we thank Sven and Pieter Booysen for organising a display of extraordinarily beautiful SL’s and other cars at the Sandton dealership.
Members will have noticed during the beginning of 2024 that we introduced new events to our calendar, and in particular the Stars & Coffee meetings have proven to be very successful.
ank you... ...to all our members who are supporting the Club and joining our events. As mentioned at our year-end function in December 2023, the Club was created by members for members; and what you get out of the Club depends on each individual member.
I would like to close with this quote from Carl Benz: “Dare to dream, and then make those dreams reality with determination and hard work.” n

Western Cape Region
The Western Cape had a busy calendar in 2023 with outings ranging from airfield visits to cosy pub meetings, as well as dealership launches and anniversary runs.
The Western Cape Region kicked
off proceedings for 2023 with a welcome return to the Classic Car & Bike Show aer a two year absence.
e show returned to its usual time slot of late January and to the beautiful Timour Hall Villa in Plumstead for the 2023 edition. Our members entered seven cars for display at the event.
Our first regional club meeting of the year was held early in February at the Stellenbosch Flying Club, just outside Stellenbosch. Members were able to enjoy the sights and sounds of the airfield over a cold beer and pizza. A number of members residing in the Helderberg and Stellenbosch area made use of the opportunity to attend a meeting in the Cape Winelands.
As per usual, members travelled to George to attend the annual George Old Car Show and the famous
President's Braai hosted by Waldo and René Scribante.
As part of an initiative to host our regional meetings at various venues throughout the Cape metropolitan area, the Bombshelter Restaurant & Bar in Pinelands was the venue for our next meeting late in February.
During March, the members were invited by Rola Motors Mercedes-Benz to attend a Workshop Day at their dealership in Somerset West. Members made use of the opportunity to have their vehicles inspected by one of their technicians. Upon arrival, members were treated to coffee and muffins to fight off the cold and wet weather experienced on the day. Aer the conclusion of the Workshop Day, most members gathered at Im Eimer Restaurant close to Somerset West for a lovely pub lunch.
In April, a small number of our region's members travelled to Gauteng to attend the 38th AGM and National Gathering hosted by the Northern Region. Unfortunately, the first of many winter storms forced the cancellation of the Coffee & Cars event planned for April.
De Oude Social Café in Welgemoed was the venue for our next pub meeting in May. e following weekend, an outing celebrating the anniversary of the W202 was held in the Cape Winelands, and members travelled to the Mooiberge Strawberry Farm for breakfast at the irsty Scarecrow Restaurant.
Rola Motors Mercedes-Benz invited members to attend the launch of the new GLC model at their dealership in Somerset West, and a number of members made use of the
opportunity to test-drive the brand new GLC.
In July, the Super Group opened a new dealership in Tokai and members were invited to display their classic Mercedes-Benz cars at the new branch.
e Crankhandle Club invited our region to their Natter which took place in August. Our members joined the Crankhandle Club members for a leisurely drive through the southern suburbs followed by a braai at the Timour Hall Villa in Plumstead.
e Cattle Baron in Durbanville was the venue for our next pub meeting to celebrate the end of the long and very wet Cape winter.
In October we were invited to visit the impressive car collection belonging to a member. We were treated to braaivleis and wonderful
hospitality by our hosts. is was followed by an impromptu breakfast run to the Stellenbosch Flying Club the next weekend.
e Tannerycars Car Show took place in November at the Old Tannery in Wellington. e venue is well suited to hosting car shows and this event was well supported by our members who enjoyed a wonderful day with fellow enthusiasts.
e Long Family once again invited our members to visit their amazing collection of cars and planes. Our region's AGM was also held at the same time and the existing regional committee was re-elected.
e highlight of the year was our year-end picnic which was held at the Webersburg Wine Estate early in December. Members were encouraged to attend the event in their favourite classic cars. Prizes were awarded to a few of the special cars on display and a few lucky draw prizes were also up for grabs. n
ZILLEN VENTER Western Cape Region Chairman
Southern Cape Region
The 2023 Southern Cape’s regional committee consisted of only myself, René Scribante, as Chairperson. We began 2023 with 61 members and gained two new members.
The new year started off on a
high with a Strawberry and Champagne affair on New Year’s Day. It was also attended by the SCOCC members.
We had special guests Errol and Sherrol Holtz from the Eastern Cape region, as well as JP and Nadine van der Poel from the Western Cape region.
Some of our highlighted events for the year were:
e George Old Car Show, our biggest event of the year, started off with the MBCSA Valuation Seminar hosted by SCRIBS BENZeum on Friday 10 February 2023, followed by the big event itself on Saturday and Sunday (11 and 12 February 2023).
We had just short of 100 MercedesBenz cars on display and collaborated with MB dealership Stanmar Motors, which was a huge success and will surely be repeated next year.
e 6th President’s Braai was attended by 140 members, a STAR event not to be missed and a wonderful opportunity to catch up with old and new friends.
In July we had a wonderful overnight outing to Steytlerville at the Karoo eatrical Hotel, where we enjoyed the Follies show and all they had to offer with a Gatsby theme.
In the beginning of September we had our annual Spring Snoekbraai with snoekbraai master Kobus Harris and his apprentices, who will have earned
their internships next year. Our region was formed in 1995 and the first event was a snoekbraai by Kobus, and this year we celebrated the 26th braai in 28 years! Quite an achievement.
e year ended on a high note with our Pig on the Spit picnic at the SCRIBS BENZeum under the old Plain tree. ere was lots of laughter, prizes given out, and delicious food, but most of all there was a feeling of belonging and friendship in this family of the Southern Cape region of the Mercedes-Benz Club.
Our regional AGM took place on the 5th of December 2023 at “die BENZ” at 18h00. Koot du Toit was elected as Vice Chairman to the Southern Cape Region of the MBCSA.
I, René Scribante was elected as Chairman to the Southern Cape Region of the MBCSA. We don’t have a secretary on the committee, and I am standing in as secretary as well.
Although we are fewer paid-up members, we continue to have very successful monthly meetings with members contributing with small presentations. We also continue to have monthly outings, which are well supported by our members. ere seems to be a very enthusiastic atmosphere within the SCape Region. I wish all the regions a successful 2024. May your MB star shine bright! n

Eastern Cape Region
The Eastern Cape Region continues to enjoy strong support from its members while membership has remained fairly steady.
023 was a good year for the
Eastern Cape Region with a lot of activities arranged, monthly outings attended, or the regular braai gettogethers we enjoy... it adds up to general fun all ‘round.
Given the spread of our members throughout the Eastern Cape, we are focused on trying to stretch our legs a little further and meet up more oen. We organised an outing where the boys and gals came through to PE for the weekend, arranged a braai and a hop past a few members’ cars. is really helps to keep the bond strong amongst the group and, of course, includes lots of car chatter.
We try to support the EPVCC gathering where possible, as we have a good relationship with that club; some of us being members there as well. is means that they welcome the MB members anytime to their display evenings on a Friday. One of the more
recent ones was an S-Class display, so we all got our big Benzes cleaned and fuelled for the evening.
Our regional AGM was held in Hogsback on the weekend of 1 to 3 December. A fair drive for all of us, albeit through a beautiful part of the Eastern Cape, and in line with us trying to keep the distances equal, or as close as possible to ELS/GRT/PE.
We initially had a good few members coming through but got a few cancellations due to illness and injury, fortunately nothing too serious.
We all stayed at the Arnimel Hotel, which is a lovely place with good accommodation and really helpful service.
Saturday aernoon we had our meeting, although nothing much was discussed besides putting our heads together to plot / plan for outings and activities in the new year. With no nominations received, the chair and
secretary remain unchanged for 2024, being Fabian Cairns and Niki Georgio.
Other events and get-togethers we managed in the last half of 2023 include the WOW show in ELS on the first of July, 8 to 9 July overnighter at the Royal Hotel in Steytlerville, collection hopping and adventure cruise around PE on the 12th of August, Spring Run for a Seaview breakfast (on 10 September) and an Airforce Museum visit on the 14th of October followed by lunch at the PE St. Georges Club.
Overall, our Eastern Cape Region spirits remain high, defined by the strong friendships and wonderful camaraderie... with regular interaction on our lively Whatsapp group. e support is just wonderful and I thank you all for it. n

Central Region
The Central Region had a busy 2023 with various meets, technical evenings, car show exhibitions as well as multiple outings to other regions.
On Saturday 28 January 2023, the
Central Region kickstarted their year's activities with the traditional braai at the Kachelhoffer Benz Barn. All the usual elements were there –cars, bola, friends, more cars, fires, more friends and more cars. Also, as per usual, the main topics for the evening were the dearly beloved vehicles in the various collections.
Our next drive was to the George Old Car Show and our region was well represented. Johan Strydom reluctantly decided to add kilometres to his beautiful 1993 W124 220E (the odometer ticking over the 70,000 km mark on the trip). Our Northern Cape section was also well represented even though our members from Upington, Michael Holland-Muter, Johan vd Merwe and Jurie Schneider decided to do the long trip in their other love, their Volkswagen Beetles. We also had two Geländewagens which could park in the VIP section under the MBCSA tent, the two lucky owners being Paul van Wyk (1981 240D) and Jacques Pieterse (G500).
Our next event was a technical evening held at the Mercedes-Benz dealership, Garden City Motors in Bloemfontein. Johan Strydom and his crew explained the technical aspects and advantages of the electric vehicle. A very impressive fact is that the vehicle could accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in about three seconds. Our members were then spoiled with a test drive in an EV, where they certainly tested this fact!
In the meantime our Vaalharts contingent also met for their regular weekend breakfasts, and in Upington our members continued to take their beauties out for a coffee drive over weekends.
Our March event was not attended very well, and in April it was time for the much-awaited National Gathering hosted by the Northern Region. Our members thoroughly enjoyed, among other activities, the spirited drives at Zwartkops Raceway – even if Loy and Fanie's W123 came home with a few sounds that were not there before!
In May it was time for our annual Bloemfontein Cars in the Park, and we were delighted to be able to host our President Waldo, our Southern Cape Regional Chairlady René (also known as Waldo's wife) and our National Treasurer Johan Kemp at this event as well. Once again, our club stand drew quite a lot of spectators as we had a beautiful collection of vehicles. e day was tinged with a bit of sadness as the late Louis Coetzer's children brought his beloved 250 SEC to be displayed – a very special sight to see. Japie Vos' beautiful Ponton 220S Cabriolet decided to throw a tantrum or two, but as the saying goes, “all's well that ends well,” and our day was quite a success.
Later in May it was time for our technical evening again and this one was hosted by Kundendienst – our Bloemfontein restoration specialists. Also present was another restoration specialist, Japie Vos, who is well known for his meticulous attention to detail with all things related to renovation and restoring.
Our thanks also go to member eo van Rensburg and his team for this event.
In June it was time to visit our Kimberley members for a lunch at e Heights Restaurant. Our departure from Bloemfontein was timed so that we would have two hours to travel the 150km to Kimberley (keeping in mind that Gert Coetzee in his Fintail would be heading our small convoy to Kimberley). Gert decided to prove us wrong and his Fintail had no problem in reducing our travelling time substantially!
Our “Vrystaat kombersie” (aka OBS remedy) was in good supply at the home of our members Loy Nel and Fanie Vorster on a cold evening in July this year. is was accompanied by a feast of soups: Tomato/Bacon, Curry Calamari and hearty Bean. To top up this feast, there were homebaked vetkoeke, breads and a yummy lemon drizzle cake for dessert. Add a fire burning in the cozy kitchen and you have the recipe for a lovely and very enjoyable evening!
August saw us setting our sights on Fanie and Anita du Preez's beautiful collection of classics at their home. Our members had a grand time ogling all these beauties – Fanie has some rare vehicles on display and his collection of scale model vehicles is also a sight to enjoy.
e cancellation of our National Concours in September was a big disappointment, especially to our very enthusiastic member Niekie Nell, who had already started preparing his W114 for this event. Next year might see some very good entries from our region. Later in September, the Kachelhoffer Benz Barn hosted a technical evening where an expert auto electrician, Gert Booysen, shared his knowledge with the group attending.
In the meantime, our Northern Cape contingent continued with their “Benz Breakfasts” at various locations in the Vaalharts area, adding some eye candy with their beauties on display. A big thank you to Bart Opperman and the others who arrange and attend these functions on a regular basis.
In October, Annalie and I joined the Western Cape region on their Agulhas trip, and what a weekend it turned out to be! We saw beautiful places, had fun with special people, and even managed to damage the electric seat electronics in our R129 when we waded through a flooded part of the road. Later in October, a good number of our members headed
out to the Be Human farm on the Brandfort road where we had a lovely lunch. On this trip we were fortunate to have Jan-Jakkals (Loy and Fanie's dog) in attendance as well.
In November it was time for our year-end function to be held in the very, very, very sunny Northern Cape. Ten of us le Bloemfontein in style in a Mercedes-Benz 22-seater and we travelled to the Red Sands Lodge near Kuruman, where we met up with the rest of our group – 24 in total. Apart from being treated to the very hot conditions, the lodge served us delicious meals. Some of our members made good use of the swimming pool, while a number of Alpacas grazed on the green grass. At our regional AGM, I was re-elected as Chairman; with Annalie as Secretary for 2024. e evening was spent under a starry sky, next to the braai fires and numerous stories (you guessed right – MercedesBenz related) were swopped. Aer breakfast the next morning, we said our goodbyes to travel back to our various homes. It was a successful weekend indeed.
I look back on a reasonably full year and would like to thank all the members, spouses and partners who either arranged or attended our events. Without you, the year would have been a bleak one! n

KwaZulu-Natal Region
There are hidden treasures in our beautiful province.
You don’t have to ask us twice to go in search of them…
Our region opened the year ’ s
events calendar with a Saturday sojourn to Wynnifred’s Café and Shoppe in Camperdown. A truly magnificent venue in the middle of the KZN green hills, the most exquisite backdrop offered to members and their gleaming vehicles.
One of the KZN Region highlights was hosted by JCA Automotive: the famed Bunny Chow Barometer!
What has become an institution for the region (read: an excuse to combine a few of our favourite things in cars, food and good company), members were treated to what are, by far, the hottest bunnies tried and tested! is while the younger club members had knowledge of the inner workings of one of the cleanest diesel W204s imparted to them.
Don’t worry. We washed our hands before tucking into lunch!
Cars In e Park, Pietermaritzburg, has been taking place in various locations and in a number of different iterations since 1976. Forty-seven years later and this year ’ s event saw
more cars on display, thousands more visitors and more enthusiasm than could power the thirstiest V8! And the Mercedes-Benz Club of South Africa contributed more than its fair share to this well-oiled machine.
e KZN Region then celebrated Heritage Day with a wonderful event on Saturday 23 September hosted at the Geyser residence and museum; home to an exquisite collection of Mercedes-Benz classic vehicles.
Members were invited to park their cars on the lawn for display, which were dwarfed by three G-Classes parked at precarious angles on a bank, boasting their offroad skills. Attendees were also treated to a diverse selection of food, including two delicious curry dishes, a lamb bobotie, traditionally spiced chicken wings, as well as divine melktert and malva pudding.
Accompanied with some cold beverages on the sun-soaked day, it was the perfect way to celebrate our rich heritage and the brand we all love.
Great food, better people, and the best cars!
For our regional AGM, members were hosted at the hidden gem known as 53 On Winchester, a unique restaurant and function venue in the heart of Reservoir Hills in Durban. Meeting formalities were applauded by an almighty thunderstorm, affirmation of a successful year in KZN.
As for our year-end function, members met for coffee and homemade muffins in the parking area of the Mercedes-Benz Brand Centre in uMhlanga. Our first stop along the scenic North Coast regional route was the Ballito Farmer’s Market for lunch.
ereaer, we set off for our overnight stop, and the venue for our celebration of the year in retrospect. Stately amidst the sugar cane fields, just inland from Stanger, stands Kearsney Manor. e pinnacle of our events calendar, Kearsney (and our members) did not disappoint.
Here’s to a more abundant, Benzfilled 2024! n

George Old Car Show: 2023
It was a busy and exciting time leading up to the George Old Car Show, with lots of opportunities to learn, share, and enjoy classic cars and their history.
The 2023 George Old Car Show
was a great success this year! It's always wonderful to have joint efforts and collaborations, and the partnership with Stanmar Motors was a huge success. We had the biggest tent ever. Celebrating the 30th anniversary of the G500, our proud display of Geländenwagens was a real treat for car enthusiasts.
It's also important to acknowledge and thank the people who put in hard work to make the show a success, like Kobus and his team.
It's always nice to have club members involved in the process and taking on new roles like our chief banner putter upper, André Fourie.
e 60th anniversary display of Pagoda and 600's was stunning, and the display of the 300SL roadster with two SLS's was a beautiful addition to the show.
Overall, the George Old Car Show was a fantastic event, and I'm glad to hear that everyone had a great time. n

2023 Gariep Star Celebration Run
As is customary in our Club, we celebrate various anniversaries of our lovely classics, and 2023 was the 60-year anniversary of a very special car: the W113 or, as it’s more commonly known, the Pagoda.
Our President, Waldo, initiated
the negotiations to honour the W113 as part of a “Stars Celebration Run” to Gariep Dam, and Jaco and I were keen to take it further by doing the necessary.
Invitations were sent out and I waited with bated breath for the influx of Pagoda entries, as we had 22 Pagoda's on display during a 2003 Western Cape Pagoda run. Alas, it was not to be.
We received only three Pagoda entries – and then Waldo's broke down. Another was withdrawn, but fortunately Wynand and Dinie Fourie with their 280SL made sure that we had at least one of the beauties present.
However, as this run was not limited to Pagodas, we had quite a nice
selection of SL's and various other models.
All of our club regions were represented with Eastern Cape taking the lead in terms of member numbers; and the Northern Region coming a close second.
Arrival was set for the Friday aernoon, whereaer we would all get together for a buffet dinner at the Gariep Forever Resort. If prizes were to be given for perseverance aer vehicle breakdowns, Waldo (whose second choice vehicle also refused to do the trip) and Sean Newland-Nell from the Eastern Cape would have been worthy recipients! We enjoyed a lovely buffet dinner and the stage was set for the rest of the weekend.
e weather decided to work with us... Friday’s cold wind abated and
Saturday turned out to be a nice sunny day. Aer breakfast, we drove in convoy up the hill and over the Gariep Dam wall en route to Bethulie. At the entrance to the wall, we received loud cheers and whistles from visitors relaxing on the lawns at the dam wall entrance. Goosebump stuff!
Our official photographer, René Scribante, was very ably chauffeured by Waldo and they stopped along the route to capture our special drive-by moments.
My GPS took us on a scenic (incorrect) route, but this gave us the opportunity to do a u-turn and view all the other vehicles in the convoy at close range.
We stopped on the Hennie Steyn bridge just outside Bethulie. is magnificent structure is a combined
road and rail bridge – 1km+ long and 51.5m high. Aer a short and windy stop, we moved on to the Royal Hotel in Bethulie. e owner, Anthony Hocking, is a treasure trove of historical facts which he shared with us before a traditional “boerekos” lunch of bobotie. e thousands of books and long-play records on display were quite impressive.
We returned to the Gariep Forever resort for our photoshoot; scheduled for Saturday aernoon. What a sight it was when all the vehicles were displayed with the sail boats on the dam providing a beautiful backdrop.
en it was time for our main event: a spitbraai in an open lapa. Due to it being winter, this obviously called for a huge bonfire and lots of sweet liquids to face the cold!
Loadshedding le us in the dark for quite a while, but we were warmed from the inside. e sheep on the spit, coupled with traditional “pap-andsous” and salads went down well; and the malva pudding with custard rounded off the meal.
Anna-Lee Dos Santos was our selfappointed DJ for the weekend and she started calling for requests of favourite songs from members around the bonfire.
is turned out to be the signal for some of the members (enter Sean Newland-Nell…) to do their “moves” accompanied by loud cheering and laughter.
Who would have guessed that Avish Maharaj could do a nice rendition of a “langarm” dance with me to the beat of some old- fashioned “boeremusiek”?
Too soon, the weekend filled with our club's usual brand of camaraderie was over, and the third Gariep Stars Celebration run was done and dusted.
My sincere thanks and gratitude must go to all the members who attended this weekend, thus providing another huge batch of fond memories to store in our club vault! n

The 6th President's Braai was a truly
special event for the MBCSA family! It's always great to spend time with friends and loved ones, and there was plenty of laughter and reflection to be had at the party.
It's also exciting to hear that there were plans being made for the future, as it shows that the community is forward-thinking and always looking for ways to improve and grow.
With 140 members and friends in attendance, it's clear that the event was a huge success and a highlight of the year for many people. e camaraderie and classic Mercedes-Benz banter made for a truly memorable evening.
It's always wonderful to have the opportunity to come together in person and celebrate the things that we love, and the 6th President's Braai was a perfect example of that.

SL Heritage Celebration 2023
Celebrating the Mercedes-Benz SL Heritage: in lieu of the National Concours 2023.
Building on the success of last
year's magnificent display at the National Concours of generations of S-Class cars since the 1950's and before, fervent plans were put in place by Pieter Booysen for a display of Mercedes-Benz SL models to grace the display floor of the 2023 National Concours.
Sadly, due to a lack of entries from members to participate and display vehicles, this showcase event had to be cancelled. However, our generous hosts (and some Club members) had already gone to a great deal of trouble to make arrangements, and so, for Heritage Month celebrations in 2023, a very special event was held at the flagship Mercedes-Benz Sandton dealership.
2023 marks the introduction of an all-new generation of SL, internally known as the R232. is brand-new design is an AMG-powered GT that promises to add "go" to match the show.
e year also marks the 60th anniversary of the W113 "Pagoda" SL, a 60's icon that has matured into a blue-chip collector's item.
ere really aren't many manufacturers out there that can boast with the pedigree and prestige that come with a lineage similar to the "Sport Leicht" range of cars that have enthralled fans of the three-pointed star for more than 70 years.
is proud heritage was showcased to the public in a spectacular display represented by multiple examples of every Mercedes-Benz SL generation since the 1950's! e highlight of this glamorous event was a "show and tell" on Saturday 6 September, where owners were invited to speak about their cars.
Some highlights included two 300SL roadsters, one of the oldest known 190SL’s in South Africa, a beautiful array of Pagodas, multiple representatives of the longest running SL range in the form of the R107
(including a rare 560SL) and a few immaculately kept, more modern SL's.
It's not oen that such a display is seen locally and one could be forgiven for mistaking the pictures for an international showcase. e GP plates and familiar faces from our Club serve as testimony that you don't need to cross an ocean in order to see some truly magnificent motorcars.
e day was a great success and these beautiful cars made a lasting impression on their many admirers. However, the richness of the heritage of the Mercedes-Benz brand would have been all the more impressive had the display been part of the Concours event. We appeal to all Club members to prepare and enter their cars for the National Concours as it is the pinnacle of automotive purism.
Let us support the brand for which we all have a passion, our generous hosts, our fellow Club members and our beloved cars by supporting this prestigious event which puts the
Annual 2021 2023
Mercedes-Benz Club head and shoulders above the rest. As our brand's slogan states: e Best or Nothing!

”Looking back on the events attended in 2023, I once again realise how fortunate I am to be part of a club like ours.“
So another year has come and gone, another year
of special memories made with my fellow brand and club enthusiasts. Looking back on the events attended in 2023, I once again realise how fortunate I am to be part of a club like ours.
One of the highlights of my year (apart from our own Central Region events) once again was our National Gathering, this time hosted by the Northern Region. What a thrill it was to be driven around the track in a powerful car with a very skilled driver at the wheel. Not even my hubby's muttered swear words (or my hat flying around in the car) could dampen the joy of that ride. Wow!
Another highlight was us joining the Western Cape on their trip in October. It’s a wonderful perk of the club: you can join anywhere! Friendly people, beautiful places and much excitement, even if this trip was quite a scary one for us.
Being very brave and following Hannes Pienaar's R107 onto a flooded part of a road, our R129's electronics decided that they do not like to get wet... the driver’s seat took on a life of its own, pushing Jaco towards the steering wheel. And there was just no stopping it.
Many stops and starts later (with much appreciated help from other members) we could continue our journey, Jaco still with his nose close to the steering wheel. I must give my hubby his due – for a man who has had two hip replacements, he managed to get out of a very small space, growing smaller by the second, very quickly!
e stories we can tell about our experiences are obviously also a huge part of our club. I oen think about the life stories of our beloved classics. Where they started, who were their owners and on what exciting trips did they take these owners?
For me a classic is so much more when you have some information on the people who loved them before we did. I have read that a car has a story to tell and only those who love them can hear that story.
I look forward to adding more pages to my story in the next year and I leave you with a quote from someone unknown: “If you don't look back at your car aer you have parked it, you own the wrong car!”
