My Perspective:
The 2025 George Old Car Show Shines Bright!
As a proud member of the Southern Cape Old Car Club (SCOCC), and current chairman of the SCOCC and Co-Organiser of the 2025 George Old Car Show, I had the privilege of attending the 28th George Old Car Show on February 8, 2025.
The event, held at the Eden Technical High School grounds, was a resounding success, attracting a massive crowd and showcasing 1,200 veteran, vintage, and classic cars, motorcycles, tractors, and engines.
I only missed one George Old Car Show and that was the very 1st one.
If I had a time machine, I would like to travel back in time, to the attend the 1st George Old Car Show, that was held on Pual Fick’s farm ”Blackwood” near Victoria Bay in 1997. A total of 80 cars where on show and food stalls were provided by the Lions Club.
My 1st show was the 2nd George Old Car Show, that was held at the George Riding Club in 1998 and approximately 250 cars and tractors were on show.
In the early years, I was more involved with arranging the Mercedes-Benz stand at the show, and I want to take the opportunity to thank all the previous show organisers and SCOCC volunteers for establishing the George Old Car Show and making it the biggest classic show in the Southern hemisphere.
Since 2020, we had a few small sponsors, that we were very grateful for, and this year we welcomed 3 mayor sponsors, namely MUA, Standard Bank and George Municipality. Their sponsorships brought an incredible nuance to the show. MUA together with the George Old Car Show brought an exciting new element namely “The Story”, highlighting the story behind each exhibitor and their classic vehicles.
Standard Bank drive positive social, economic, and environmental impact across all regions we serve. From pioneering sustainable financial solutions to championing the vibrant tapestry of arts and culture, and now Classic Motoring, they strive to uplift society and create a better future.
I am extremely delighted to have had the sponsorship from George Municipality, being the host City, it underwrites the economic value the Show attract to the greater community of George and in general promotes tourism in the region.
JP Spares didn’t only come onboard as a show sponsor, but also sponsored the annual VETTOER, which is the veteran tour on the Friday before the show.
Thank you to our Media partners, ALGOA FM and The George Herald, our beverage partners, SAB Breweries and Coca-Cola Beverage for their continued support.
We are extremely thankful for our smaller sponsors, adding to the value of the George Old Car Show. Please find all our sponsors the poster, THANK YOU ALL.
This year’s British theme was a masterstroke, drawing in a stunning array of British-built cars, including iconic marques like Rolls-Royce and Bentleys as part of our Special display. The D-Field was abuzz with excitement as enthusiasts marvelled at the majestic Rolls-Royce and Bentley display, featuring over 20 of these luxurious British motoring monarchs. A sea of British cars were on display through the varies clubs and the SCOCC on the main A-Field.
On our main A-field, I was particularly proud of our club’s hospitality tent, which offered a warm and welcoming space for visitors to relax and socialize. The tent was beautifully decorated, with comfortable seating and refreshments available throughout the day.
One of the main attraction on the B-Field was this year’s magnificent display of over 100 Veteran and Classic Motorbikes. The classic motorcycle display was also extremely well-supported, with a range of eras represented, from the 1930s to the 1970s.
The Eden Vespa Club added a fun and lively touch to the proceedings, with their colourful scooters and enthusiastic riders.
Always a highlight of the show was the drive-by runs, which took place past the arena and SCOCC members’ tent. The British car drive, which closed off the proceedings at 5 pm, was particularly impressive, with a strong turnout of Morris Minors, MGs, Triumphs, Rolls-Royce, and Bentleys.
Throughout the day, visitors were treated to a fascinating array of cars, each with its own unique story and history. From the pristine red Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk III to the rare Iso Rivolta, there was something for every car enthusiast to admire and appreciate.
A huge variety of food stalls provided an array of festival food, to everybody’s tastes. Our Coke vans provides refreshments not to mention the 2 SAB beer tents, offering a welcome rest from the sun. The motor-related, swop meet and flea market stalls provided a unique experience for show visitors to browse and learn of what is available in the motoring world! We are always privileged to have our local car dealerships at the show, show casing there latest models, adding another dimension to the classic old car show! The auction run by Trader’s Auctioneers during the lunch break, was a huge attractions and well attended, with numerous offerings on auction.
A show like this is not possible without the help of a few dedicated volunteers, therefore I would like to thank the Committees of the GOCS and SCOCC for all there hard word and dedication. For the members that volunteered to help, thank you, it really made a difference.
I don’t have enough words to thank Alewijn Dippenaar (Co-Organiser) and Mimi Finestone for their incredible enthusiasm and work ethics, without whom the show would not have been such a massive success. I don’t only thank them for their hard work but also for incredible support they have given to me!
We had a massive response from our local Beneficiary Services organizations, who volunteers to help, the Rotary ran the 2 beer tents, the Round Table helped at the entrances to the show, especially getting the exhibitors cars onto the show grounds with efficiency. The Vryburgers managed the traffic and directing visitors to the public parking areas. The Glenwood School’s scholars and teachers that handle the ticket sales from early Saturday morning. The SPCA with the help of “Gogga” did all the Coke sales for us. Wild Fire Support helped a lot the week before and during the show with all the logistics, getting waste bins, putting up banners and just generally helpful wherever we needed a hand.
The success of this year’s show enabled us to make significant financial contribution to the above mentioned volunteering groups as well as enabling Carpe Diem school to collect parking fees for their school funds. Not only do we compensate Eden THS for the use of their facilities and sport fields, we are also investing in infrastructure improvements at Eden Technical High School as a token of our appreciation for hosting the event.
For me the show is about the motoring camaraderie, meeting old friends, some who you only see once a year at the show and making new friends!, for a visitor coming to meet you, because his dad had a car like mine. I received numerous momentous and parts from visitors and fellow exhibitors, for just being there. A truly magnificent occasion and experience.
As the show came to a close, it was clear that the 2025 George Old Car Show had been a resounding success. With its unique blend of passion, nostalgia, and community spirit, this event has cemented its place as one of the premier classic car shows in South Africa
Kind regards,
Waldo Scribante

Firstly, a BIG Thank You to all of the motorcycle enthusiasts and collectors for displaying their prized possessions at the show, to the organisers of George Old Car Show for their support and commitment and all from the old motorcycle community who provided work and support, guidance and set-up of the motorcycle display. It is appreciated. The Motorcycle exhibit would not have been the success it was if it were not for you.
Our aim for this year’s show was not to grow the numbers but to improve on the variety and quality of the marques and overall display. We believe we succeeded, with a vast improvement of Motorcycle participation at this show. We had a hundred and thirty motorcycles, scooters and trikes both classic and vintage with a few rare and unusual later model motorcycles. We had motorcycles from all over the western Cape, the Free State and Eastern Cape ranging in age from 1925 to a few unusual motorcycles from the early 21st century
Despite concerns about the one-day event and the weather, the Event turned out to be a great success. We received nothing but praise from the public young and old, the stands were busy, and the interest and interaction between the exhibitors and motorcycle enthusiasts was excellent.
We had excellent support from Motorcycle vendors and similarly they were all happy and have committed to be back next year with more of the latest and greatest motorcycles.

The 2025 George Old Car Show on February 8 was a huge success
George, Garden Route (February / March 2025) - The 28th George Old Car Show held on February 8 2025 drew a massive crowd to the Eden Technical High School grounds in central George. Near perfect weather - sunny alternating with mild cloud cover - contributed to making this one of the most memorable shows in the event’s history, which has seen it cement its status as one of the country’s best classic car events on the annual calendar.
Visitors to the show were stunned by a unique array of veteran, vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, tractors and farm implement engines that totalled well over the 1 000 mark. And this year’s British theme saw the fields at the high school venue packed to capacity with entrants arriving from all parts of South Africa.
“The decision to switch from a two-day event to a one day show this year was a resounding success,” said Waldo Scribante, chairman of the organising club, the Southern Cape Old Car Club. “Even before the show officially opened at 9 am the fields seemed to be filling up with spectators, and they remained packed all day right up until closing time at 6 pm.”
Another good decision was to declare a special British theme for the 2025 show. An orchestrated campaign in the weeks leading up to the show resulted in more British-built cars streaming into the grounds than ever before, and many of these British classics were getting their first exposure to the greater classic car audience.
There was heart-warming support from the likes of MG, Triumph, Austin Healey, Morris, Austin, and more exotic makes like Aston Martin, Jensen, Morgan and the likes of Mini Coopers and British Fords such as Anglias and Cortinas, Vauxhalls and other workaday classics from various eras, starting with the tiny
Austin Seven examples from the 1920s.
For many show-goers, the crowning glory was the magnificent Rolls-Royce and Bentley display on the top field, representing the “royalty” of the British motor industry. A selection of over 20 of these expensive British motoring monarchs had been assembled from owners arriving from all parts of the country. These included Bentleys with famous Le Mans Heritage from the 1920s and ‘30s and included a 4,5-litre Le Mans model that came from Cape Town and a Speed-6 example, representing the famous victory achieved at Le Mans in 1930.
“I was particularly pleased to see the spread between Bentley and Rolls models, and also to note that these cars that entered covered such a number of different eras”, said Waldo Scribante. “We had Rolls and Bentley models from the 1930s, progressing through the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s through to the modern day.
“It is amazing that the first Rolls-Royce arrived in South Africa in 1910, and here on the field in George we had a modern 2016 Phantom Limelight model that travelled up from Paarl for the show.”
One of the most eye-catching of the special Rolls-Royce examples was the Shooting Brake model owned by Brian Bruce of Knysna, with evocative wood-enforced estate-car bodywork commissioned in India, on an early 20/25 chassis.
The enthusiasm for the British theme also extended to other show genres. The Vintage and Veteran display opposite the main arena showcased some British cars not often seen, such as the 1925 Morris Cowley Bullnose example, as well as a stately white 1912 Rover Colonial with a magnificent warrior-like radiator mascot. More low-key was a mid-1920s Talbot Tourer in unrestored form, showing tantalising patina from its 100-year history. For the record, the oldest car on the show this year was a 1904 French car, a tiny single cylinder De Dion Bouton Model Q, owned by Tom van der Vyver.
One of the prize British exhibits on the A Field was the pristine red Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk III, an ultra-rare 1958 model. Owned by Mark Barendse of Knysna the car was discovered in the ‘70s in Vereeniging where it had been used to cart hay back and forth on a small holding! It has been beautifully restored to original spec by its previous owner, Ron Hollis, and features an optioned, period-correct high-horsepower engine that includes a set of triple Weber carburettors.
Another very rare classic sports car, that arrived unannounced at the show, was a mid-1960s Iso Rivolta, a rare exotic Italian supercar from the 1960s. It is the only one in the country and arrived in Johannesburg the late 1960s. From the 1970s it was stored by its second owner and who planned to restore it but never found the time. It has been residing in Port Elizabeth for the past seven years and finally recommissioned for the road by its current owner, Jarrod Hargreaves. Iso was previously known for its diminutive Isetta bubble cars but surprisingly built just under 800 Rivoltas which used a 5,3-litre Chevrolet engine in a stylish body, between 1962 and 1970.
As ever there was a magnificent display of cars from the Mercedes-Benz Club on the top field, and these were located alongside other German marques, such as BMW, Porsche, Borgward, Volkswagen and DKW. There was also an eye-catching Ferrari display, featuring amongst others a tasty 1990s 512 TR example.
There was once again an impressive turnout of tractors and farm machinery from the Suid Kaap Veteran Tractor and Farm Implement club and the line-up was described to the audience on the main field by the ever-enthusiastic and knowledgeable Andre Barnard. One of the tractors to catch the eye was the 1950s
David Brown tractor, as Aston Martin sports cars built after 1950 used the DB initials when tractor manufacturer David Brown acquired the company in the late 1940s. Some current Aston Martin models still use a DB prefix.
The drive-by runs past the arena and SCOCC members tent were once again well received and were conducted by country of car-origin. The British car drive, which closed off the proceedings at 5 pm garnered a very strong turn-out, with several Morris Minors, MGBs, Triumphs, Rolls-Royce and Bentleys displaying the widespread presence and influence of British cars in South Africa over the past 100 years. One notable participant here was Vickee Fleetwood of East London, who was setting off from the show to drive back home in her unrestored 1959 Austin Healey Sprite, a frog-eye example that has been in her family since before she was born!
As ever there were a large number of American cars scattered across the main field, including a number of Ford Mustangs, Chevrolets, Ford Fairlanes and Valiants that owed their heritage to the American Chrysler group. It was good to see a few examples of “South Africa’s own car”, the Ranger, which was built by General Motors here in the early 1970s. The Ranger was essentially an Opel body with a Vauxhall grille and tail section and a few examples were actually exported by GMSA for sale in Europe!
The classic motorcycle display this year was extremely well-supported, and on the drive-by for bikes a number of eras were represented, dating back to the 1930s, and featuring some icons like AJS machines from the late 1950s, and superbikes from the classic 1970s bike-boom era, including a water-cooled Suzuki 750 GT three-cylinder model.
Once again the Eden Vespa Club from the George area showed lots of enthusiasm for their drive-by opportunity with scooter hooters blaring, and a number of large three-wheeler trikes, some with engines garnered from Volkswagens and Nissans, also made their presence felt.
With over 1 000 participants this year, it is not possible to detail each and every one of the wonderful historic machines that put on such a memorable spectacle. As show co-ordinator Alewijn Dippenaar had remarked at a pre-show gathering, one should keep in mind that every single vehicle on the field at the show represented someone’s passion. Passion for old cars, motorcycles and tractors, passion for locating them, restoring them, and driving them, sometimes over very long distances to be at the show.
We would like to express our gratitude to George Municipality, MUA, Midas, JP Spares, Standard Bank, Algoa FM, Protea Hotel by Marriott King George, George Herald, Castle Lager, and Coca Cola for their ongoing support.
The George Old Car Show represents a meeting place, a focal point for all that passion to mingle and energise. And the visitors to the show shared in that passion, spreading the word about a movement that is gaining momentum at a gratifying pace. And plans are already afoot to make the 2026 rendition of the show in February next year an equally rewarding experience.

Tempus fugit - tyd vlieg!
Daar was ses Model T Fords en ses Model A Fords.
Just a few words on the Vet Tour, many thanks to Philip Kuschke for a really well planned and organised event. On Thursday 6 February we all met at the Engen Garage, my wife Sharon and I took part in our 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom I, Open Tourer. Our Rolls was restored by the Thompson Family of Pietermaritzburg in 1967, We have owned this car for 15 years and in all this time have only done general maintenance, so hats off to the Thompson Family for doing such an outstanding job on this Old Lady.
We left the Engen Garage and took a lovely scenic route through Klein Brak River and Groot Brak River and headed to our lunch stop at Jakkelsvlei Winery, where we were treated to a delicious lunch. After lunch we drove to Gourikwa Coastal Nature Reserve, were we all received our keys to our over night stay. The accommodation was 1st class, with a great sea view.
Thursday evening, we all had dinner together at the Nature reserve restaurant, which was well prepared. Everybody sat around chatting and discussing our favourite topics, where to find cars and parts, and sharing many stories.
Friday morning, we all met for breakfast in the restaurant. After breakfast we stood around chatting and admiring all the cars, there was a big variety of Model T Fords, a very special Rover, Hupmobile, Lancia, several Model A Fords, a Morris Cowley and some magnificent Bentleys.
We made our way back to George where we all went to our Parking spots at the George Show, ready to display our cars for the Saturday Show.
The final event of the Vet Tour was a Spit Braai at The BENZ club house where many stories were exchanged. A great time was had by all, and we are already looking forward to taking part in next year’s event.
Regards to all

The decision by the committee of the Southern Cape old Car Club to have the George Old Car show for one day brought the idea to life to have a tour after the show. Phillip Kuschke and myself had been campaigning to revive the rally part of our hobby in the club. With this in mind the inaugural George Old car Show eScape Tour & Rally was born.
With Phillip organising the rally part my wife, Rensche Kühn, and I with the help of our chairman Waldo Scribante set about laying out a route. The idea was to not rally for the whole day so that the entrants could still have time to explore and enjoy the areas we visited thus incorporating the touring part into our rally schedule. Organising an event in the Eden district really is a pleasure as no matter in which direction you drive you are surrounded and surprized by our country’s beauty.
After a bumper show on Saturday, we had an early start on Sunday at the clubhouse of the SCOCC for scrutineering and orientation of the 13 cars entered. We were very excited to have quite a few first-time rally entrants on the list. The cars set of from 9:00 to rally until our lunch stop at Jakkalsvlei Winery close to Herbertsdale. After lunch looking out over the vineyards, it was a short drive to our overnight stop at the picturesque Gourikwa Nature Reserve close to Gouritzmond. Dinner was served in the lapa with the waves crashing just a few meters away! Phillip presented the results of the day’s rally.
On Monday the route took us through Albertinia, Riversdale over Garcia’s Pass to our lunch stop at the Karoo Art Hotel in Barrydale. The cars lined up in front of the historic building for a memorable photo! After lunch and with the rally part over the entrants enjoyed some leisure time in Barrydale before continuing on the R62 to Montagu to check into our accommodation for the next two days at Avalon Springs Resort. The resort is nestled in the mountains on the outskirts of the town. Being February the natural hot water in the pools were still too hot to swim during the day! Results and dinner enjoyed by all.
We had a short rally on Tuesday through Ashton and Robertson ending at Viljoensdrif Winery on the Breede River joined by some local classic car enthusiasts for lunch. Before lunch we took a cruise on the Breede River taking in the beautiful scenery from a different perspective.
Thank you to Phillip Kuschke, Gavin Alison, Waldo Scribante and Rensche Kühn for helping to make this event the great success that it was. I was very thankful that I did not have too much work as the back-up vehicle! We hope to continue to improve the event and to grow with more entries!

Deidre du Plessis
• Alfa Romeo presents the logo to celebrate its 115th anniversary, as a tribute to its legendary history.
• The launch of the new logo coincides with two key events in Alfa Romeo’s history: the historic victory at the 1930 Mille Miglia with Tazio Nuvolari and the debut of the Quadrifoglio at the 1923 Targa Florio.
• The year 2025 is also one to celebrate other significant moments, including the centenary of the GP Tipo P2’s victory in the first World Motor Championship, the 75th anniversary of the 1900 and having taken the first world title in Formula 1, the 1955 debut of the Giulietta Berlina, the 1965 debut of the Giulia Sprint GTA, the 1975 victory of the 33 TT 12 in the World Championship for Makes and the 1985 arrival of the Alfa 75.
• The celebratory logo will be the leading light in events, rallies and merchandising. The more than 250 Alfa Romeo clubs around the world will have free rein to use it to celebrate 115 years of passion.
On June 24, Alfa Romeo will be 115 years old, a memorable milestone the global brand is celebrating today with the official presentation of a celebratory logo, paying homage to an extraordinary history of Italian passion, style, and sporting competition. The new logo is thus shared with the official clubs and with all fans around the world, for use at events and rallies, and in dedicated materials and local initiatives.
It is a symbolic but potent gesture to emphasize the profound and visceral bond between the brand and its passionate “Alfisti” fandom, in a relationship that knows no bounds of geography or time, but which thrives on a common passion and the sharing of the brand’s founding values. For its reveal to the world, Alfa Romeo has chosen a special moment of the year: these days, the brand and its fans are remembering the historic victory at the 1930 Mille Miglia with Tazio Nuvolari and the debut of the Quadrifoglio at the 1923 Targa Florio.
115 years on the move: the celebratory logo that tells the story of the Alfa Romeo spirit
The 115th anniversary logo celebrates Alfa Romeo’s heritage, in a contemporary design that combines past, present and future. The ascending diagonal of the number “115” symbolizes the momentum and drive for innovation, core values embedded in the brand’s DNA. The “5,” the focal point of the
composition, is embraced by the Biscione, the brand’s historic and iconic emblem used here as both a visual and symbolic element to create depth and a sense of three-dimensionality. The bold contrast between the deep black of the numerals and Alfa red is reminiscent of the brand’s identity, defined by passion, sportiness, and Italian style. The presence of the Biscione and the graphic structure pay homage to the historic celebratory Alfa Romeo logos, reinterpreted in this case according to a minimalist and contemporary approach.
The choice of this day to unveil the new celebratory logo is far from a coincidence. Indeed, the 115th anniversary coincides with two episodes that embody the brand’s most authentic spirit and have contributed to sculpting the Alfa Romeo legend in the collective unconscious. The first dates to April 12-13, 1930: the Mille Miglia, a symbol of motorsport, witnessed the triumph of the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport #84, driven by Tazio Nuvolari and Giovanni Battista Guidotti. It was the first victory of the “flying Mantuan” in this race, but also the first time that the threshold of an average speed of 100 km/h had been passed on such a long and demanding route. A memorable feat that consecrated the brand’s technical excellence and the tenacity of its leading names. In that edition, Alfa Romeo literally dominated the scene, taking the top four places in the standings. Only a few years earlier, on April 15, 1923, another event destined to make history saw the light of day at the Targa Florio. That was the day Ugo Sivocci won at the wheel of the Alfa Romeo RL TF, bearing the Quadrifoglio symbol on the bodywork for the first time. The small emblem, created as a lucky charm, soon became an icon of the brand, linked to the highest-performance cars and the most daring feats that defined the character of Alfa Romeo, forever embodying the values of speed and courage inherent in the brand.
An unrepeatable year studded with sporting and industrial anniversaries in the name of the Biscione
The 115th anniversary takes on even greater value given that, in 2025, other celebrations of significant models and fundamental sporting achievements are intertwined. For example, just 100 years ago the legendary Alfa Romeo GP Tipo P2 won the first World Automobile Championship, establishing itself on international tracks thanks to the design genius of Vittorio Jano and the talent of the official drivers, including Antonio Ascari and Gastone Brilli-Peri, who led the field in an epic season that cemented the brand into the elite of world motoring.
Not to mention that this year also marks the 75th anniversary of the debut at the Paris Motor Show of the 1900, the first Alfa Romeo car produced on a large scale, and the resounding victory of the Tipo 158 “Alfetta,” crowned World Champion in the inaugural season of Formula 1 and driven by Nino Farina, the first world champion in the history of F1 and a symbol of the brand’s technical and sporting excellence.
In addition, 2025 also sees celebrations of the debut at the 1955 Turin Motor Show of the Giulietta Berlina, a model that brought elegance and dynamism to Italians’ everyday lives, followed in 1965 by the Giulia Sprint GTA presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show, a veritable “sacred monster” of racing that took victories all over the world. Finally, in 1975 the 33 TT 12 won the World Championship for Makes and ten years later the Alfa 75 made its debut, as the final mass-production Alfa Romeo model built on the Alfetta platform.
In short, we are faced with a series of anniversaries that is not a mere coincidence, but an extraordinary synchrony of history. Every date, every car, every milestone contributes to plotting the unique profile of Alfa Romeo, a brand that has not followed the sign of the times for 115 years, but has challenged it. And now more than ever, it is looking ahead with the same grit and passion that have made it an uncompromising icon.
