Opening Evening

“World Art Day exhibition 2025” of SANAVA branches

Exhibition Dates: 12 April – 3 May 2025

Venue: Association of Arts Pretoria

Theme: “A Garden of Expression: Cultivating Community Through Art”

SCAVA was proud to take part in the World Art Day Exhibition 2025, a nationwide initiative hosted by the Association of Arts Pretoria in collaboration with SANAVA. The exhibition ran from 12 April to 3 May 2025, showcasing a curated selection of small-format paintings by artists from SANAVA’s many branches across South Africa.

Each SANAVA branch was invited to nominate five artists to contribute to this special exhibition, and SCAVA was honoured to present five outstanding works, each created on a 254 mm x 254 mm canvas provided by the organizers. The exhibition aimed to strengthen the sense of shared vision and camaraderie among SANAVA’s diverse branches, while also placing South African visual arts within a broader international conversation.

The event formed part of the global celebration of World Art Day, observed annually on 15 April, which commemorates the birth of Leonardo da Vinci and recognizes the profound impact of visual art on society. This international initiative, established by the International Association of Art (IAA) in partnership with UNESCO, encourages artists and art lovers alike to celebrate the transformative power of creativity.

The theme for 2025, “A Garden of Expression: Cultivating Community Through Art,” resonated deeply with SCAVA’s mission and spirit. By participating in this exhibition, SCAVA contributed to a dynamic tapestry of artistic voices from across the country, reflecting not only individual talent but also a collective dedication to building and nurturing creative communities.

SCAVA extends its heartfelt thanks to the Association of Arts Pretoria and SANAVA for making this meaningful event possible, and to the participating artists who represented our branch with passion and excellence.

There was space for only five SCAVA members to participate in this exciting national exhibition. Members were asked to indicate their interest by 24 January 2025, and in the interest of fairness, all names were placed into a hat for a random draw.

The following names were drawn during a SCAVA committee meeting to represent SCAVA at the World Art Day Exhibition 2025:

• Petra Brits

• Annelene Volschenk

• Diane White

• Janet Dixon

• Ester Zonnestein

Congratulations! We are proud to have you representing SCAVA at this national event!

ART UNVEILED by cathy Fourie, Zanne Small and Nicholas Leonard

ART UNVEILED was an exclusive exhibition of Artworks held at Attic Atelier at 33 C J Langenhoven Street in February 2025.

Cathy Fourie's watercolours, Zanne Small's watercolours and oils as well as paintings from her private collection and Nicholas Leonard's lovely ceramics were all on display.

The official opening was on Thursday 6 February 2025 and was very well supported. It was followed up by various workshops like Urban Sketching by Fawa Conradie, Botanical Tinctures, Card making and Mixed Media demo by Gerda Smith.

We also had an informative evening on Valentine's Day with the Garden Route Birds of Prey, attracting a different group of people to view our exhibition.

Overall we had a very positive experience with some good sales made as well as new friends and contacts

Gerda Smith, as member of the Attic Atelier, and SCAVA Member, had an exhibition called Time Fragments, opening on the 20th of February 2025.

Time Fragments comprised a collection of mixed media and charcoal pieces, representing snapshots of life, moments experienced along the way.

As a wildlife artist I like to capture the spirit and essence of the subject. I love to paint owls simply because of the allure of these fascinating birds.

‘The Hunter' was painted in a cinematic style where the arrangement of elements in the painting guides the viewer’s eye to create a sense of movement and energy.

I am happy that this painting could be part of this exhibition where art becomes a force for conservation.
