CHAPTER 7

The TRACHEA & BRONCHI

importance The trachea and main stem bronchi are prominent and important landmarks that need to be readily identified on x-rays by all clinicians. The identification of the trachea and carina is essential for the safe management of endotracheal and gastric tube placement. If you ever plan to intubate a patient or treat patients who are intubated, it is vital to know where to find the trachea and carina on a chest x-ray. Understanding the radiological appearance of the trachea and bronchi allows for accurate identification of mediastinal and hilar anatomy and related pathology. Various pathological processes can change the appearance of these landmarks, and noticing these changes is important. Accurate localizing of pathology is important for differential diagnosis, and for communicating your findings to the patient and other members of the healthcare team.

objectives Skills You will identify •

the trachea, carina and bronchi on the PA and lateral chest x-rays.

the subcarinal and interbronchial angles on the PA and lateral chest x-rays.

important interfaces that are related to the trachea.

a displaced trachea on the PA and lateral chest x-rays.

a narrowed trachea on the PA and lateral chest x-rays. You will provide

a differential diagnosis for tracheal narrowing. 172
