What’s On

Welcome

THERE IS A SYNERGY ABOUT GOING DOWN THE SUMMER RABBIT HOLE AND COMING OUT THE OTHER END, FINDING YOURSELF ASLEEP UNDER A TREE.

This is what Alice will be doing along Wonderland on the Murray, a series of eight sand sculptures that trail from the Port of Echuca to the Kerrabee Reserve, running from December 13 to March 9.

On the last weekends in January and February, you will find me in the sand at the Sandstation Zones and building my own sandcastle at the Moama Beach Sand Sculpting Competition.

Santa has made a list of some of our favourite public familyfriendly Christmas events, which I plan to tick off.

Before welcoming in the new year, reflections will be made at the Echuca Racing Club family fun day on December 31, followed by looking forward to local New Year’s Eve events.

Now to show my age and, like every other February, and spend my birthday down the front of the crowd with my best rockabilly punk hair, slamming to The Living End at River Boats, kicking back with Xavier Rudd and be up on my (poor-old) feet for Baker Boy.

Hopefully, the Southern 80 will be full speed ahead for March 2026.

Still, if not, you can race into history at the Echuca Historical Society Museum with a display of memorabilia from the acclaimed water skiing competition.

If air-conditioning comfort is more your thing, Junction has a fantastic summer menu with matching cocktails.

Or you could go for a drive and dine at cluBarham.

Lastly, locals and visitors alike can dive into summer fun —some of it free — with various water activities on page 55.

Get out there and enjoy all the Echuca Moama region has to offer this summer.

Explore a Wonderland on the Murray

A BELOVED CLASSIC TALE WILL COME TO LIFE IN ECHUCA MOAMA THIS SUMMER WITH WONDERLAND ON THE MURRAY, A SPECTACULAR SAND SCULPTURE TRAIL FEATURING SCENES FROM ALICE IN WONDERLAND, RUNNING FROM DECEMBER 13 TO MARCH 9, 2026.

The trail, stretching between the historic Port of Echuca and Kerrabee Reserve in Moama, will showcase eight large-scale handcrafted sand installations created by Sandstorm Events.

The collaboration between Murray River Council, Campaspe Shire Council and Campaspe Port Enterprise brings this unique exhibition to the twin towns.

When Sandstorm Events director Sharon Redmond was sitting with both councils to come up with a theme for the event, she presented Alice in Wonderland, as it formed the ideal trail.

“Starting the trail in Echuca, finishing it in Moama, it has some beautiful synergy about Alice going down the rabbit hole and then at the end, coming up and waking up,” she said

Visitors can explore iconic scenes including Alice’s descent down the rabbit hole, encounters with the Caterpillar and Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit’s House, before reaching the grand finale — Alice’s Tea Party at the Moama Soundshell.

The sculptures will be illuminated and accessible for viewing from 9am to 9pm daily.

Free parking is available at designated areas including the Port of Echuca precinct, Hopwood Gardens and Kerrabee Reserve.

All installation sites feature wheelchair-accessible pathways and ramps.

Activations are planned across multiple weekends during the duration of the trail, including opening weekend in December, the weekend of January 31 and February 1 and the weekend of February 28 and March 1, 2026.

Visitors can look forward to a range of creative experiences and family fun, including the popular Sandstation Zones and the Moama Beach Sand Sculpting Competition.

Watch professional sculptors at work as they create incredible sand artworks, then join in the fun by taking part in friendly family and group competitions.

Suitable for all ages, these activities promise plenty of creativity and entertainment along the river. For complete details and updates, go to visitechucamoama.com.au/wonderland-on-themurray

December 6 | Moama

Neil Diamond show rocks

The Neil Diamond Story is preparing to dazzle audiences at Moama RSL on Saturday, December 6 featuring a sumptuous two-course dinner and top-tier entertainment.

Melbourne vocalist Jason Taylor, accompanied by his 10-piece Hot August Night Showband, will bring Neil Diamond’s greatest hits to life.

The performance features accomplished backing vocalists Caroline Hawke and Tracy Two Hucker Rainer, whose harmonies add richness to the show.

“We do represent Neil’s songs and we certainly do the ballads, but he has some monsters,” Jason said.

“Many familiar songs from that original, Hot August Night album were remade by Neil Diamond in his

later years, from albums that he released from live performances, revamping the songs considerably.

“A lot of the songs in the 1970s were very relaxed versions, where we tend to do the later versions.

“We perform classics like Sweet Caroline, Song Sung Blue, Beautiful Noise and Forever in Blue Jeans.”

The dinner service for The Neil Diamond Story begins at 6pm, with the three-hour show starting at 7.30pm.

For bookings and enquiries, contact Moama RSL reception on 5482 6677 or visit the club at 56 Merool Rd, Moama.

New Years Eve festival will light up Moama

A FAMILY-FRIENDLY NEW YEAR’S EVE FESTIVAL WILL TRANSFORM MOAMA RECREATION RESERVE INTO A VIBRANT CELEBRATION SPACE, FEATURING EARLY FIREWORKS AND ENTERTAINMENT FOR ALL AGES.

Wedding and Event Angels owner Lisa Grove said the inaugural Glow on the Grass festival emerged from community feedback.

“Through the demand of the community asking for family-oriented New Year’s Eve things to do, we started thinking about what we can do that the community is looking for,” she said.

“People were looking for fireworks, but at a more family-friendly time.

“The golf club has the midnight fireworks, but that event is 18-plus.”

The festival, scheduled for Wednesday, December 31, from 4.30pm to 9.30pm, will culminate in a spectacular fireworks display at 9.15pm, orchestrated by Hay-based pyrotechnician Anthony Slattery.

Entertainment features acoustic artist Jessica Lorraine and the energetic party duo TJ Show.

“They are a duo, more of a get-up-and-party kind of atmosphere,” Ms Grove said.

Young festival-goers can enjoy complimentary arts and crafts, games and face painting with their entry.

Additional attractions for older children include laser tag, jumping castles, a teacup carousel, a rock climbing wall, and bungee trampolines.

“There will be food trucks on the night as well, which will range from Asian street food, wood-fired pizzas, American-style burgers and Latin-style food,” Ms Grove said.

Sweet treats will be available from Port Ice Creamery, along with slushies, smoothies, crepes and coffee.

Adult tickets are $20, children under 16 pay $5, and unlimited ride passes cost $20.

Organisers expect around 2000 attendees, with ample parking available at the reserve’s designated areas.

In case of wet weather, the event will proceed under marquees, with full refunds available if cancelled due to severe weather.

Tickets can be purchased at weddingandeventangels.com.au/glow-on-thegrass-2/

Multi-sport weekend

ECHUCA-MOAMA TRI CLUB HAS AN ACTION-PACKED MULTI-SPORT WEEKEND

PLANNED FOR JANUARY 2025 THAT WILL SEE ATHLETES SWIM FROM THE PORT OF ECHUCA TO MORRISON’S WINERY, AMONG OTHER EXCITING EVENTS.

The action-packed weekend kicks off on Saturday, 17 January, with a junior event at 9am, perfect for budding athletes. Later that day, adrenaline junkies can tackle the exhilarating sprint triathlon starting at 5:30pm.

Known as Wharf to Winery, the event will see over 200 athletes swim either 1.5km or 3km on Sunday, January 18 at 9.30am, from the Port of Echuca to Morrison’s Winery wharf.

Once participants have completed the swim and arrive at Morrison’s Winery, they will be greeted with live entertainment, a free breakfast and will be able to unwind with like-minded people.

Mark your calendars, as entries open in November for all events. With a substantial cash prize pool up for grabs and record-breaking attendance

anticipated, competition promises to be fierce and exciting.

Echuca-Moama Tri Club race director Sarah Mulkearns said the club was excited about the weekend and how the events continued to grow every year.

“We had 300 at our sprint triathlon, 80 juniors at their event, and we had nearly 200 at the Wharf to Winery last year, so the event is building up every year, which is great,” she said.

“There is lots of excitement for our multi-sport weekend, we had a record number of people in the sprint triathlon last year, and we had our biggest numbers for the Wharf to Winery as well, so everyone is really keen to get out into the water in January.”

Riverboats Music Festival

THE RIVERBOATS MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL MAKE ITS HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RETURN TO THE MURRAY RIVER’S BANKS ON YORTA YORTA COUNTRY IN ECHUCAMOAMA FROM FEBRUARY 13 TO 15, 2026, BOASTING THE STRONGEST LINE-UP IN THE EVENT’S HISTORY.

“In our 14 years, this is the biggest and most electric line-up. It is a remarkable collection of artists from near and far,” Riverboats festival director Dave Frazer said.

The three-day celebration will showcase headline acts The Living End, Baker Boy and Xavier Rudd, alongside a stellar collection of Australian performers beneath the majestic river red gums.

“We have some of the biggest names in Australian rock with The Living End,” Mr Frazer said.

“We have Baker Boy fresh off playing the (AFL) Grand Final with Snoop Dogg to open.

“If there is anyone still on their picnic rugs when Baker Boy gets up on Friday night I will be surprised.

“Xavier Rudd, he’s on tour across Europe at the moment, will be just a beautiful way to finish on the Sunday.”

Echuca-Moama’s own The Wildlings, featuring Drew Walker and Ryan Gay, will kick off Saturday’s entertainment.

Drew expressed their enthusiasm.

“We are really excited to be doing Riverboats, can’t believe it really,” she said.

“It is a bit surreal.

“We will be opening for The Living End, which is pretty nice on the resume.

“Because we have always wanted to do Riverboats and having been in the Echuca area, I’ve always wanted to be part of a local lineup, if they had done one, and here it is.”

The complete lineup for Riverboats 2026 is Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, Baker Boy, Bleak Squad, Cash Savage & Last Drinks, Daisy Kilbourne, Emma Donovan, Felicity Urqhart & Josh Cunningham, Full Flower Moon Band, Merpire, Norwood, Paul Dempsey, Queenie, The Counterfeit ft. Freya Josephine Hollick, The Living End, The Wildlings and Xavier Rudd.

RocKwiz favourite Brian Nankervis will host the event.

“We have got a First Nation funk band, Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, that live on Country in Arnhem Land, that we are charting a flight to get them to Echuca, who are just incredible,” Mr Frazer said.

“We have a 10-piece orchestra that plays the songs of the spaghetti western era, The Counterfeit ft. Freya Josephine Hollick.

“Music from Ennio Morricone or the John Wayne soundtracks, they’re in full Mexican garb, it’s just this hilarious, wonderful, captivating show.

“So, being able to weave that into a lineup as well is just fantastic.”

The festival’s beloved paddle steamer sideshows will return aboard the PS Pevensey, delivering intimate hour-long performances while navigating the Murray River.

Running from December 18, 2025, through March 31, 2026, the exhibition showcases an impressive collection of historic ski gear, race memorabilia and trophies that chronicle the evolution of this internationally acclaimed water skiing competition.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is the prestigious Leigh Johnson perpetual trophy, alongside an

‘Full steam ahead’ on Southern 80?

ALTHOUGH SKI RACING REMAINS ON HIATUS, THE MOAMA WATER SPORTS CLUB IS HOPEFUL IT CAN GET BACK TO THE WATER FOR THE 2026 SOUTHERN 80.

With racing still currently suspended, the MWSC has made the call that it is untenable to move ahead with the Beehag 100, typically scheduled for November, but the club is still expecting to run its marquee Southern 80 event in March.

Club president Steve Shipp said he expected racing to have resumed by that time, and the club is busy putting plans in place for the 2026 event.

“There’s a lot of organisation to be done, and we’ve made the call we’re not going to run the Beehag, it’s just too tight, but the Southern 80, we’re definitely full steam ahead with that,” Shipp said.

“We’ve got (plans) in place, and because the Southern 80 next year is in March, we’ve got a fair bit of time.”

Named for its 80km racing distance, the Southern 80 sees skiers travel along the Murray River from Torrumbarry to Echuca-Moama, at speeds exceeding 160km/h in the elite classes.

Both the 2024 Beehag and 2025 Southern 80 were unable to be held due to the hold placed on racing by the governing body, Ski Racing Australia.

The MWSC held a Southern 80 boat show on March 22, with more than 100 boats on display, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the race.

If the Southern 80 goes ahead, it will most likely happen in March.

EMFM broadcast across Echuca, Moama, Mathoura, Torrumbarry, Lockington, Elmore and Kyabram and stream to the internet 24/7.

Discover Moama venue Junction’s culinary innovation

RICH IN HERITAGE AND ABUNDANT IN LOCAL PRODUCE, JUNCTION IS A GATHERING PLACE CELEBRATING THE REGION’S FINEST.

A celebrated Moama venue is showcasing the Murray region’s finest produce, premium wines and craft beers, while pushing culinary boundaries with native Australian ingredients and innovative cooking techniques.

Junction head chef Cameron Kydd has unveiled the venue’s latest menu updates, featuring a mix of seafood and game meat dishes that will carry through until the venue’s Christmas break.

“We put a couple of changes on the menu in the last weeks of spring, which we will keep on the menu until we go on our Christmas break,” Cam said.

“Then we come back on New Year’s Eve.”

Among the standout dishes is a kingfish ceviche, cured in what Cam calls “tiger’s milk” — a citrusbased mixture of lemon juice, fish stock, chilli and garlic.

“The kingfish is then finished with some salmon roe, karkalla, which is a beach banana sea herb, and some watermelon radish,” he said.

The menu showcases a delicate squid ink risotto with seafood and chorizo in a saffron emulsion, and locally sourced Murray cod served with broad beans and baby leeks in a cumin foam.

Cam is particularly enthusiastic about the wildcaught venison from the Mansfield region.

“The wild-caught venison will be sous vide, then we roll it in a sesame ash,” he said.

“It is really pink because it is sous vide and then the outside is really black, which makes it look really cool.”

Looking ahead, Cam is exploring introducing more native Australian meats.

“Maybe a wallaby tartar as well, as it is something different, other than kangaroo,” he said.

“I was thinking of adding a bit of emu as well, just because of where we are and there are a lot of emus around the Barham area.”

What’s

Celebrating culture and art

MARRAMARRA GALLERY MARKETPLACE, AN ABORIGINAL-OWNED MULTI-CLAN GALLERY ON YORTA YORTA COUNTRY IN VICTORIA, IS SET TO SHOWCASE WORKS FROM 11 FAMILY ARTISTS IN AN UPCOMING EXHIBITION.

“We established the gallery because our families live up that way and it is a multi-language family, clan gallery, just for our families,” Yorta Yorta artist Richard Young said.

The gallery represents artists from diverse Nations, including Gunnai, Waradgerie, Yorta Yorta, Gunditjmara, Boon Wurrung, Tiwi and Wakaman.

It operates as a cultural centre offering exhibitions, workshops, artist talks and youth development programs. Richard, who won an Aboriginal art award with the Koorie Heritage Trust last year, shares his distinctive artistic approach.

“I am an abstract artist, painter and essentially I paint what comes to my mind,” he said.

“Generally, just colours that come to me from Country and on a lot of the painting, I use a highpressure water hose to water blast.

“I put like 10, 20, 30 layers of paint, so it is really thick and I use 14-ounce canvas.

“Then, if I am carving out a possum skin marking, I apply the high-pressure water hose to carve into the paint to shape out the possum skin.

“The way that they would have once been etched in with bones, the possum skins, were carved in and

then ochre applied on top, whereas what I’m doing is the reverse.”

The gallery takes a different path from conventional art spaces.

“What tends to happen is the mainstream gallery, they just tend to promote central desert artwork, because they think that is all Indigenous art is,” Richard said.

“We don’t sell our work, we share our stories and what goes into making the piece, the reasoning and all that.

The gallery features the Mullins family — Jonathon, Carmal, I’Ochre, Laurina and Yurali — alongside Tanise Young, Judith Young, Lyn-Al Young, Robert Young, Kevin Williams and Richard Young.

MarraMarra, which translates to ‘Create, Make, Do’ in the language of Richard wife, Judith Young, embodies the gallery’s dedication to culture, creativity and truth through art, education and cultural exchange.

You can find MarraMarra Gallery Marketplace at 628 High St, Echuca, open Thursday to Sunday from 11am to 5pm. You can preview MarraMarra Gallery marketplace artworks at marramarragallery.com.au

cluBarham has major facelift

CLUBARHAM IS UNDERGOING A FACELIFT, AND THROUGHOUT THE UPGRADES, THE CLUB WILL REMAIN OPEN AS USUAL, OFFERING ITS WELCOMING HOSPITALITY WITH BISTRO MEALS, CAFÉ, BAR, GAMING, BOWLS AND DON’S KITCHEN.

The significant renovations, with the recently completed auditorium marking the first phase of extensive upgrades to the popular Murray River venue.

cluBarham club manager Josh Foster said the auditorium reopened in late August, just before the Rock and Roll festival.

“The auditorium now has red gum timber all around the perimeter, brand new lighting and carpet,” he said.

“We maintained the original red gum dance floor in the same size.

“We added the balustrade that goes around the dance floor, so that the high rise can be a viewing deck for the bowls, which is working out really well

with the windows open.”

The renovations to the auditorium have included full-length glass doors that open onto the bowling green, creating an indoor-outdoor space.

The club is expanding its entertainment calendar, maintaining its existing festivals, while adding new events.

“We are maintaining our two rock ’n roll festivals, our Belladeers Country Music Festival, and we have added a blues festival in July next year,” Josh said.

The next phase of renovations, focusing on the front entrance, was scheduled to begin in the first week of October.

During this period, patrons will need to access the venue through the side entrance.

“The front door will be widened so that it is wide enough for us to drive a car or a boat into the main foyer to be used as prize draws for guests,” Josh said.

The reception area will undergo a complete makeover, featuring a new desk, red gum timber feature wall and improved layout to prevent bottlenecks.

Additional renovations to the main lounge are scheduled for winter 2026.

“All through the renovations, cluBarham will be operating as normal,” Josh said.

Many of cluBarham’s festivals are very popular, with the rock and roll festival in August next year already 70 per cent sold.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT CLUBARHAM IN 2026

• Balladeers, country music festival — May 4 to 7

• Barham Blues Festival — June 19 to 21

Kyabram Fauna Park makes a splash

KYABRAM FAUNA PARK IS TURNING UP THE FUN DIAL, WITH THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF ITS BRAND-NEW SPLASH PARK — A 580-SQUARE-METRE WATERPLAY SPACE DESIGNED TO DELIGHT PEOPLE OF ALL AGES.

The splash park, which opened in October 2025, is the latest addition to the popular northern Victorian attraction, and promises to be a refreshing way to spend a day out.

Children can cool off under water jets and fountains before bouncing their energy away on trampolines, digging in sandpits, or relaxing on the picnic-ready lawns.

More than just a play space, the splash park adds subtle cultural and conservation significance, designed to represent the endangered broadshelled turtle, a totem of the local Yorta Yorta people.

The fauna park’s much-loved animal experiences are a year-round affair, where visitors can meet koalas, kangaroos, emus, reptiles and an array of native birdlife.

Families can wander through upgraded bushland habitats, learn about conservation, and now add a splash of water play to their visit.

Kyabram Fauna Park is part of Zoos Victoria, a notfor-profit organisation dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction.

Located just 30 minutes from Shepparton and under an hour from Echuca, the park is perfectly placed for a family day trip or a longer regional getaway.

With picnic areas, onsite café options and now the splash park, Kyabram Fauna Park is set to be a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re cooling off under the fountains, jumping high on the trampolines, or meeting Australia’s most iconic wildlife, Kyabram Fauna Park offers a full day of fun with a meaningful connection to nature.

Thanks to the Victorian Government’s Kids Go Free program, children under 16 receive free admission to Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Kyabram’s longest men’s lunch date set

KYABRAM LOCALS JOIN TOGETHER ANNUALLY TO SUPPORT AND DISCUSS MEN’S HEALTH, A VITAL COMMUNITY INITIATIVE.

The 11th annual Kyabram Men’s Longest Lunch, is set to return to Kyabram Parkland Golf Club on Friday, February 27.

As one of Kyabram’s most anticipated annual gatherings, the 2025 longest lunch attracted 180 guests, fostering discussions on local men’s health and raising an impressive $27,000 for Kyabram District Health Services.

This generous donation funded crucial medical equipment, including a cutting-edge patient monitor and an essential bladder scanner, significantly improving patient care at our regional health centre.

Over the past 11 years, the event has raised over $150,000 with all funds being used to raise

awareness of men’s health problems and funding medical equipment for men’s health at Kyabram District Health Service.

The lunch promises a relaxed atmosphere featuring entertainment, sporting personalities, and local men courageously sharing their personal health experiences.

Plans are going ahead for the 2026 lunch to top the 2025 event, where the likes of comedian Dave O’Neil and former St Kilda Football Club player Steven Baker entertained guests.

Closer to the date of the lunch, tickets will be available through Walker’s Real Estate, Kyabram.

Embracing a family-friendly atmosphere, the gates welcome visitors from 3pm, with the main spectacle roaring to life at 7pm.

The earlier gate opening times will give families time to embrace the kids’ inner cowboys and cowgirls, explore the rodeo side show, and dine on local food trucks, before all the action starts.

The Kyabram Rodeo is part of the long weekend tri-series, which includes rodeos in Merrijig on Saturday and Chiltern on Sunday.

This year’s event promises to maintain its traditional flavour, while introducing fresh elements to ramp up the excitement.

Rodeos are galloping back into the limelight, celebrating the remarkable bond between skilled riders and their powerful animal partners in breathtaking displays of mutual strength and agility. The animals are more powerful than ever, and the skilled cowboys are pushing their limits with increasingly daring performances.

The 2026 Kyabram Rodeo will feature a music element, which we will all have to stay tuned for to find out more about closer to the 2026 Labour Day weekend.

The music element will add to the family-friendly atmosphere and ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees.

“We sow 35,000 seeds to the hectare, over 12 hectares, so 420,000 plants,” Adam said.

“We do it every year just to bring some joy to families and friends and let them come out, take some photos and play in the sunflowers for an hour or so.”

Visitors can lose themselves in a sea of golden blooms, create picture-perfect memories, and bring home their very own slice of sunshine by hand-

The experience has been a hit, drawing hundreds from across Victoria, including Melbourne, Gippsland and Ballarat.

Enhancing the Sunflowers of Timmering experience, Claira showcases her professional photography expertise, offering bespoke sunset photoshoots for families, couples, children and friends when the sunflowers are at their radiant best.

Adam acknowledges the challenges of cultivating sunflowers, but beams with pride knowing the joy and wonder they bring to visitors’ faces make every effort worthwhile.

The exact opening dates in February depend on farming conditions and will be announced closer to the time.

The Rochester Agricultural Show is over two days at the Rochester Recreation Reserve, with everything you love about a good old country show. The show starts on Friday, February 27, 2026, with the dog show during the day.

For the dog show, you can wander in and see various dog breeds in action, including which dog will be Best in Show.

From 5pm, when the gates officially open, the Rochester Agricultural Show is a ticketed evening carnival.

The Rochester Recreation Reserve will come alive Friday night with entertainment, food, drinks, maybe a few hands-on activities like mechanical bull riding, finishing the evening with the 9pm fireworks extravaganza.

General entry tickets for the Friday night carnival, which runs from 5pm to 9pm, are $10 for adults, $5 for secondary-aged children, and free for primary school-aged and younger children.

To start bringing the animals to the show a day earlier, there will be a ‘beef spectacular’ on Friday night.

Then, on Saturday, February 28, it will be all about the animals from 9am to 3pm, with free entry for the day.

On Saturday, there will also be all the traditional show items you would expect, including show bags, rides, fairy floss and children’s entertainment. Saturday will heavily feature animals, including working dogs, horses, both dairy and beef cattle, goats and chickens.

The craft pavilion will run a full schedule of categories, including food, arts and crafts, which will be on display Friday evening and all day Saturday.

This year, more food trucks will be set up in the food court area, with extra shaded seating. For more information on the Rochester Show, visit facebook.com/rochestershow3561

Rochester Delve into Rochester’s past

THE ROCHESTER HISTORICAL & PIONEER SOCIETY, LOCATED IN ROCHESTER, VICTORIA, WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1967 AND LATER AMALGAMATED WITH THE PIONEER SOCIETY IN 1986.

The society plays a crucial role in preserving and showcasing the rich history of the Rochester district. Its primary purpose is to house and maintain an extensive collection of artefacts, documents, photographs, and other materials that illuminate the early history and development of the region.

The society operates a museum complex that includes two significant historical buildings: the restored Common School, dating back to 1874, and the Salvation Army Hall, built in 1926.

These buildings serve as the primary spaces for displaying the society’s diverse collection and providing storage for the historical materials.

The restored Common School offers a glimpse into the early educational practices of the area, while the Salvation Army Hall provides insight into the social and community activities of the past.

Through its museum and collections, the Rochester Historical & Pioneer Society offers valuable educational opportunities for residents and visitors alike, fostering an understanding and appreciation for the heritage of the Rochester district.

The society’s efforts ensure that the stories and experiences of the pioneers and early settlers are preserved for future generations.

Further information and resources can be found at the society’s website and through historical directories such as History Victoria and the

Campaspe Shire Council’s community directory. Additionally, the Australian Museums and Galleries Association provides a listing for the society’s museum, offering another way for those interested in learning more about Rochester’s local history.

Rochester Historical & Pioneer Society is located at 96-98 High St, Rochester and is open Wednesday and Friday, 9am to noon, or by appointment.

Catch, release, win at fishing challenge

THE EDWARD KOLETY FISHING CHALLENGE IS AN ANNUAL EVENT HELD ON THE EDWARD RIVER FROM FEBRUARY 6 TO 8.

Kolety is the Indigenous name for the Edward River

The fishing challenge focuses on catch-and-release fishing for Murray cod and yellow belly.

The event is capped at 300 entrants, with 100 sponsors and up to 100 kids participating.

The event has a proven track record of success, having raised an impressive $30,000 at last year’s fishing challenge.

This money has been used for river restocking and community projects, making a tangible difference in the local area, including in 2025, a donation to the Navorina Nursing Home.

Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge event coordinator Andrew Jefferies is proud the event has helped bring back the eel-tailed catfish to the local waters.

“Fish aren’t breeding in the river naturally and coming down through the natural breeding course from Menindee Lakes through the Darling and into our river system,” he said.

“There are so many weirs, locks and blockades in the way now.

“So, we are trying to rejuvenate and boost the numbers.

“We have put about 26,000 yellow belly back in this year, and about 10,000 catfish back into the river, along with 35 extra breeding Murray cod, which are

already 60 to 70cm long.

“Hopefully, we have brought eel-tailed catfish back from extinction.

“They are breeding locally again, which they haven’t been because of the stinking carp, but we are getting back on top of it.”

The Edward Kolety Fishing Challenge is a catchand-release event.

Entrants take a photo of the legal native fish they have caught with their entry tag on their brag mat and text the picture to the challenge.

There are prizes for the largest native fish caught over the weekend, but all other prizes are random draws, so everybody has a chance to go home with the major prize of a boat and engine package from Deniliquin Yamaha.

If you don’t want to fish, but would like to come along, everyone is welcome to come to Deniliquin Memorial Park on Friday night, participate in the festivities, buy a raffle ticket and join in on the family fun.

On Friday night there will be music, food and kids’ entertainment.

For more information and to be one of the 300 entrants, go to www.edwardfishingchallenge.com.au
