Explore Kyabram’s wildlife, art and events

Kyabram, a charming country town in Victoria’s heart, offers a rich tapestry of experiences for locals and visitors alike.

The town’s crown jewel, Kyabram Fauna Park, spans an impressive 55 hectares and showcases a diverse array of Australia’s unique wildlife.

The park houses over 400 native animals, including Tasmanian devils, short-beaked echidnas, alpine dingoes and a lively group of meerkats.

Visitors can get up close with koalas, renowned for their endearing features and climbing prowess.

For thrill-seekers, exclusive behind-thescenes tours with reptile keepers and chances to feed the magnificent cassowary provide unforgettable, hands-on adventures.

The Kyabram Fauna Park now boasts a 580-square-metre waterplay splash park, opened in October this year, designed to represent the endangered broad-shelled turtle, and a totem of the Yorta Yorta people.

Art aficionados will find Kyabram a treasure trove.

The Kyabram Town Hall Gallery, which

doubles as an information centre, hosts numerous exhibitions throughout the year across its four gallery spaces.

These captivating exhibitions celebrate a diverse range of artistic expressions, from intricate textiles and vibrant paintings to handcrafted pottery, innovative mixed-media pieces and stunning photography.

For most of the year, at least one room at the gallery showcases innovative textile art, pushing the boundaries of traditional craftsmanship into the realm of fine art.

Kyabram serves as an ideal launching pad for exploring the region’s Silo Art Trail.

The town’s water tank features a mural inspired by the endangered animals residing at the fauna park.

Nearby towns such as Colbinabbin, Rochester, Tongala, Stanhope and Echuca offer additional art experiences, including massive silo artworks, street art, community murals and galleries.

Music enthusiasts can revel in the vibrant scene in Girgarre, which features a sound walk park, the annual Moosic Muster and monthly Jigarre Jammin’ sessions held for 10 months of the year.

Sports fans will find plenty to engage with in Kyabram.

The town hosts a variety of sporting activities including football, netball, cricket, lawn tennis, lawn bowls and golf.

Visitors are welcome to attend matches and cheer on the teams.

Throughout the year, Kyabram hosts several free community events that welcome everyone.

The lead-up to Christmas sees the main shopping precinct come alive with the Kyabram Spring Market, Santa’s Cave at the Kyabram Town Hall, the Christmas shop local event as well as the Christmas Lights Competition.

Larger events that draw crowds to the town include the Kyabram Rodeo in March and the Kyabram Agricultural Show in October.

Additionally, the Moonlight Market is held at John Pilley Reserve on the fourth Saturday of the month from September to April.

Surrounding communities also offer familyfriendly events, such as the Rushworth Heritage Festival on Easter Saturday and Tongala Eats and Beats in October.

For market enthusiasts, the region offers several options, including the Stanhope community market on the first Sunday of each month, the Rushworth market on the third Saturday and the Girgarre produce and craft market on the second Sunday.

A unique experience awaits visitors just west of Kyabram in February: the Sunflowers of Timmering.

This picturesque location provides the perfect backdrop for selfies and allows visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of the region.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or relaxation, Kyabram offers a captivating blend of experiences that will steal your heart.

Where classic cinema meets timeless history

Experience a nostalgic journey through time as you step into the iconic Kyabram Plaza Theatre, a living piece of history.

Exuding timeless charm in the heart of Kyabram’s CBD, this beautifully preserved theatre stands as a cherished landmark, enchanting the streetscape with its enduring elegance.

Serving as a cinema, theatre, playhouse, and dance palais, this versatile venue comfortably seats 430 patrons, each enjoying an excellent view of the screen.

In 1928, the Kyabram Free Press announced that Mr Lewis. H. Day would be building the theatre, and billing it the “Showplace of the Valley”.

The theatre had its official opening in 1929, and for nearly four decades, showcased a diverse range of films, from classic Hollywood to local productions.

The theatre would find troubles and it ceased showings and closed in 1968, before a group of passionate film fanatics lobbied together and formed a theatre committee.

The committee’s successful campaign persuaded the shire to purchase the building, ensuring this historic gem remains a treasured community asset for generations to come.

These passionate volunteers meticulously maintain the theatre, guaranteeing every visitor an authentic journey through time as they enter through the grand tri-double door entrance.

The passionate volunteers continually strive to restore the theatre to its former glory.

Thanks to generous support from the Community Bank Kyabram & District, the theatre’s exterior has undergone exciting upgrades.

These include a modern light box showcasing current and upcoming films, and stylish roof trim lighting that now elegantly illuminates Allan St.

The Plaza Theatre offers convenient weekly screenings every Tuesday and Saturday night at 7.30pm, carefully curating a diverse range of films to cater to all tastes and preferences.

Save the date for Spring Market

Blooming blossoms and stuffy noses only mean one thing: it’s time for the Spring Market to return.

Mark your calendars for the first Friday after Melbourne Cup Day as the Spring Market transforms Allan St into a shopper’s paradise.

The Kyabram Chamber of Commerce is urging everyone to get ready for a day of fantastic finds.

The market puts shops on Kyabram’s busiest street in the spotlight for one day, allowing the hundreds of attendees to peruse the street and its shops freely without traffic.

Kyabram Chamber of Commerce committee member Bron Vick said there was always plenty going on for attendees to explore.

“We have a huge variety of stalls coming … there will be something available for every type of person to enjoy,” Bron said.

With over 30 carefully selected street vendors, the market offers a curated selection of high-quality goods, condensing the best

of a month’s worth of markets into one extraordinary day.

The market coincides with the annual RV Country Music Festival, which runs from Melbourne Cup Day, through to the weekend.

The festival welcomes hundreds of travellers looking for a bit of boot stomping, and those who stop by Allan St could also pick up a bargain.

Bron encourages all Allan St businesses to join in the festivities, highlighting the event’s commitment to showcasing Kyabram’s diverse local talent.

“We’d like to encourage (businesses) to get out on the street — no matter if you’re a hairdresser or a Pilates studio — get out on the street, advertise your business and chat to the people that come out on the day,” she said.

“We’ve got a really vibrant business sector in Kyabram, and we want the Spring Market to be about celebrating that, and what we can provide as a town.”

Walk, cycle and connect at Breen Ave

Discover the perfect blend of tranquillity and vibrancy as you traverse Kyabram on the Breen Ave dual walking and cycling track, connecting the peaceful outskirts to the bustling town centre.

The Breen Ave dual walking and cycling track seamlessly integrates with the town’s existing path network, offering residents a safe and convenient route for walking and cycling.

Since its 2024 completion, the path has woven itself into the fabric of local life, offering a secure route for schoolchildren and a joyful haven for dog walkers to bond with their fourlegged companions.

Spanning 1.78km along Breen Ave, this crucial connector joins paths on Cooma Rd

and Allan St, forging an uninterrupted journey from Kyabram’s vibrant heart to its picturesque fringes.

This project is the fruition of the Kyabram Walking and Cycling Strategy, a grassroots initiative born in 2004 to unite the town through a comprehensive network of pathways.

The project kicked off with new pathways on South Boundary Rd and Lake Rd, followed by upgrades to existing tracks, before finally extending east to connect with Breen Ave.

After 11 years of keen expectation, the Breen Ave section of the path network made its grand debut in September 2024 — perfectly timed for residents shaking off their winter slumber to revel in Kyabram’s glorious spring weather.

A blooming delight

The breathtaking Sunflowers of Timmering create a golden sea as far as the eye can see, but this stunning sight is available only during the magical month of February.

Adam and Claira Whipp are eagerly preparing to welcome visitors to their beloved annual sunflower spectacle at their picturesque Timmering farm in Victoria.

The dedicated couple nurtures an astounding 12 hectares of sunflowers, lovingly planting an incredible 420,000 seeds each year to create this golden wonderland.

“We sow 35,000 seeds to the hectare, over 12 hectares, so 420,000 plants,” Adam said.

“We do it every year just to bring some joy to families and friends and let them come out, take some photos and play in the sunflowers for an hour or so.”

The Whipps throw open their farm gates on February weekends when the sunflowers are in full bloom.

Visitors can immerse themselves in a sea of golden petals, capture Instagram-worthy moments, and even take home a piece of sunshine by picking their own sunflowers.

The experience has been a hit, drawing hundreds from across Victoria, including Melbourne, Gippsland and Ballarat.

As part of the Sunflowers of Timmering experience, Claira Whipp puts her photography skills to use, offering sunset photoshoots for families, couples, kids, and mates when the sunflowers are at their most stunning.

Adam acknowledges the challenges of cultivating sunflowers, but beams with pride, knowing that the joy and wonder they bring to visitors’ faces make every effort worthwhile.

The exact opening dates in February depend on farming conditions and will be announced closer to the time. For the latest on opening dates and entry fees, check the Sunflowers of Timmering Facebook and Instagram pages.

Saddle up, rodeo

fans

The 80th Kyabram Rodeo is set to electrify the Labour Day long weekend with adrenaline-pumping action.

It’s one of the longest-running community rodeos, and everyone will come together for a special celebration of its 80th year.

McPhee Rodeo Company, in partnership with the Kyabram AH and P Society, will host the event at the Kyabram Showgrounds on Friday, March 6, 2026.

The Kyabram Rodeo is saddling up for another thrilling event, with site bookings and pre-ticket sales now available. With the rodeo’s surging popularity,

organisers anticipate record-breaking crowds and a 20 per cent increase in rider participation across all events.

For a more family-friendly rodeo, the gates will swing open at 3pm, with the main action thundering into life at 7pm.

The earlier gate-opening times will give families time to embrace the kids’ inner cowboys and cowgirls, explore the rodeo side show, and dine at local food trucks, before all the action starts.

The Kyabram Rodeo is part of the long weekend tri-series, which includes rodeos in Merrijig on Saturday and Chiltern on Sunday. This year’s event promises to maintain its traditional flavour while introducing fresh elements to ramp up the excitement.

Rodeos are roaring back into the spotlight, showcasing magnificent animals in aweinspiring displays of strength and agility.

The animals are more powerful than ever, and the skilled cowboys are pushing their limits with increasingly daring performances.

The 2026 Kyabram Rodeo will feature a music element, which we will all have to stay tuned for to find out more about closer to the 2026 Labour Day weekend.

The music element will add to the familyfriendly atmosphere and ensure a comfortable experience for all attendees.

Dinosaurs, dogs and dazzling displays

The beloved Kyabram Show is set to return to the Kyabram Showgrounds at 390 Allan St on Saturday, October 17, 2026, promising a rich tapestry of traditional entertainment and cherished community activities.

The 2025 Kyabram Show delighted families with its popular animal nursery and the thrilling new Dinkum Dinosaurs, an interactive dinosaur puppet show, both of which are expected to make a roaring return in 2026.

Expanding on the wildly popular dog show that draws over 500 pooches annually, the event boasts an impressive array of agricultural exhibits.

Visitors can marvel at majestic horses, prize cattle and charming goats, with a special highlight being the diverse all-breeds beef show.

In a move to encourage widespread community involvement, organisers are considering waiving entry fees for all pavilion craft categories.

This could open up exciting opportunities for enthusiasts to showcase their talents in areas such as baking, photography and preserves.

The show will host the young ambassador and rural ambassador competition, open to participants under-18 and those aged 18 to 30 respectively.

Embracing modern inclusivity, the show has transformed the traditional showgirl

competition into an exciting ‘fashions on the field’ event.

This stylish showcase now warmly welcomes participants of all ages, from adorable infants to fabulous over-40s.

The event’s success hinges on roughly 60 community volunteers who serve as stewards across various sections.

“It is a huge community effort, which is pretty awesome,” Kyabram AH&P Society Inc secretary Filipa Marshall said.

“We can’t do the Kyabram Show without the support of the community, whether it be volunteers, or the lots of different sponsors.”

In the lead-up to the Kyabram Show in October each year, you can find printed schedules distributed throughout Kyabram, with QR code postcards available for online schedule access.

Moonlight market steals the show

The inaugural Kyabram Moonlight Market made a spectacular debut in September, attracting more than 3000 visitors for an evening of shopping and delicious food in a family friendly atmosphere.

Operating from 5pm to 9pm on the fourth Saturday of each month until April next year, the market transforms John Pilley Reserve, adjacent to the Kyabram Fauna Park, into a vibrant evening marketplace.

Kyabram Community Learning Centre chief executive officer Jen Savage said the event realised a long-awaited community aspiration.

“For many years, Kyabram has been looking to have its own market,” she said.

“We are making the most of the warm weather, having the market in the evening is a bit of a point of difference for us, both in location and in what we will be able to bring to the community.

The evening buzzed with activity as stallholders set up beneath the councilprovided fairy lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere.

“We are focusing on vibrant local businesses, home businesses, community and wanting to give them an avenue to show off their amazing things,” Jen said.

Each monthly gathering will feature food vendors, diverse stalls, and dedicated space for local charitable organisations.

“At each market, we will have at least one stall, which is from a not-for-profit in town, and they will be offered a free stall to be able to come and fundraise,” Jen said.

The organisation continues to welcome new stallholders, with more than 80 already secured for the upcoming market.

Future markets will hopefully also have a live music component.

The Moonlight Market is on the fourth Saturday of the month from September to April at the John Pilley Reserve, 16 Fauna Park Dve, Kyabram running from 5pm to 9pm.

Prospective stallholders, volunteers, and musicians can reach KCLC at projects@kclc. com.au or by calling 5852 0000.

Walk through native reserves

Kyabram Urban Landcare Group manages three reserves in Kyabram.

GREY BOX RESERVE

Located behind Parkland Golf Club, nestled between the fairways and neighbouring horse paddocks, lies the 4.5 hectare Grey Box Reserve.

The reserve showcases three distinct woodland types that were once widespread in the region, offering a glimpse into Kyabram’s natural heritage.

Damp grey box areas have grassy ground covers such as wallaby grass, broughton pea, and slender gardenia.

The Dry Grey Box Buloke Woodland produces predominantly grey box trees with an understory of gold dust wattle, waterbush and spreading eutaxia.

The third type of woodland has white Cypress pine and yellow box on sandy rises with Buloke trees and an understory of sweet bursaria and gold dust wattle.

Most of these plants can be found within the Grey Box Reserve, with the remnant portion

having not been farmed due to poor soil and low-lying periodic floods.

The hardy grey box tree, nardoo grass, vibrant purple swainsona pea, and cheerful yellow goodenia all thrive in waterlogged conditions, showcasing nature’s resilience.

Flooding events also trigger breeding cycles for fish and frogs, attracting water birds such as ducks and egrets.

The Kyabram Urban Landcare Group has established a level gravel walking track around the reserve.

As you follow the walking track clockwise, listen for three distinct frog calls: the deep ‘bonk’ of the pobblebonk, the rapid-fire ‘kuk-kuk-kuk’ of the spotted marsh frog, and the Perron’s tree frog’s unmistakable ‘jackhammering’ sound.

You will come across a wide range of Indigenous plants, many recently planted, including 10 types of wattle.

Several older trees, many of which are thought to exceed 200 years old, provide nesting sites for the numerous parrots in the area.

As you turn back south, you will see a small dam on your left with a seat inviting you to sit and listen to the calls of pardalotes, kingfishers and rosellas.

RACECOURSE RESERVE

The Racecourse Reserve is conveniently situated alongside the Kyabram Trotting Track and directly across from the Kyabram Scout Hall on Racecourse Rd, making it easily accessible for visitors.

A gravel walking track winds through oldgrowth trees interplanted with young seedlings, providing undergrowth coverage for small birds and wildlife.

ERN MILES RESERVE

The Ern Miles Reserve is rehabilitated farmland at 148 S Boundary Rd, Kyabram.

The whole paddock has been planted with native vegetation for 20 years, and now many birds consider this reserve home. For more information, visit Kyabram Urban Landcare Group’s Facebook page.

Kyabram Fauna Park Makes a Splash

with New Family Attractions

Kyabram Fauna Park is turning up the fun dial, with the official opening of its brand-new Splash Park — a 580-square-metre waterplay space designed to delight families of all ages.

The splash park, which opened in October 2025, is the latest addition to the popular Northern Victorian attraction and promises to be a refreshing way to spend a day out. Children can cool off under water jets and fountains before bouncing their energy away on trampolines, digging in sandpits, or relaxing on the picnic-ready lawns.

More than just a play space, the splash park adds subtle cultural and conservation significance, designed to represent the Endangered Broad-shelled Turtle, a totem of the local Yorta Yorta people.

The Fauna Park’s much-loved animal experiences are a year-round affair, where visitors can meet koalas, kangaroos, emus, reptiles and an array of native birdlife. Families can wander through upgraded bushland habitats, learn about conservation, and now add a splash of waterplay to their visit.

Kyabram Fauna Park is part of Zoos Victoria, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction. Located just 30 minutes from Shepparton and under an hour from Echuca, the park is perfectly placed for a family day trip or a longer regional getaway. With picnic areas, onsite café options and now the Splash Park, Kyabram Fauna Park is set to be a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re cooling off under the fountains, jumping high on the trampolines, or meeting Australia’s most iconic wildlife, Kyabram Fauna Park offers a full day of fun with a meaningful connection to nature.

Thanks to the Victorian State Government’s Kids Go Free program, children under 16 receive free admission to Healesville Sanctuary, Kyabram Fauna Park, Melbourne Zoo and Werribee Open Range Zoo on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.

Authentic Aboriginal tourism experiences offered at Barmah

Inside the world’s largest river red gum forest in the Barmah National Park, a transformation is taking place.

The Dharnya Centre, on Yorta Yorta country, is taking visitors on meaningful cultural journeys as a hub for immersive cultural education and environmental experiences.

Visitors range from school and outdoor education groups, to corporate teams and experiential travellers, who are given the opportunity to take part in authentic Aboriginal tourism, which often meant travelling beyond Victoria in the past.

Three flagship experiences, including a cruise, a guided walk and a cultural education session, are now offered at the precinct.

Ninety-minute guided cruises aboard the Kingfisher take guests along the Murray River, known as Dhungala in traditional Yorta Yorta language, where passengers gain insights into culture, Country and ecology among the globally significant wetlands.

Cruise dates and times vary between seasons, with some weekend availability during spring.

A one-hour guided walk takes visitors along the Yamyabuc Trail, connecting them with stories of the land, scar trees and living heritage that define Yorta Yorta’s enduring custodianship.

Half- or full-day cultural education sessions, led by Yorta Yorta Elders and Knowledge Holders, can be tailored to visiting groups.

The residential or day-visit sessions include hands-on activities and intergenerational knowledge sharing.

“The precinct is becoming a living classroom and cultural meeting place,” the centre’s business development manager, Garry Armstrong, said.

“We are seeing schools, outdoor education groups, corporate groups and independent travellers booking experiences that create genuine connection to Country.”

Mr Armstrong said there had been a shift from passive tourism to active cultural engagement.

Recent precinct upgrades and renewed partnerships with Visit Victoria and regional operators are making Dharnya a desired destination.

The Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation says it is committed to ensuring visitors leave with not only unforgettable memories, but also a deeper understanding of Yorta Yorta culture.

Mack trucks roll in for muster

The Kyabram Mack Muster is set to return to the Kyabram Showgrounds on March 21 and 22, 2026, showcasing the rich heritage of one of the world’s longest-running truck manufacturers.

Kyabram Mack Muster committee member Tim Dawes explains the event will feature Mack trucks spanning from the 1920s to present-day models.

“We are a group of like-minded people that have come together to run the event,” he said.

“We are all enthusiasts of the Mack brand.

“Mack is probably one of the world’s oldest continuous truck manufacturers.

“They started in 1900, so this year they are celebrating 125 years of continuous production.”

The show’s centrepiece will be Australia’s oldest surviving Mack truck, a 1923 model AC owned by David Dawes.

“It originally worked in Melbourne, delivering oil for a vacuum oil company back when it was brand new in the early ’20s,” Tim said.

“It drives at a blistering 12 miles, 19 kilometres, per hour, so watch out for slowmoving bugs.”

The celebration includes a special dinner at Parkland Golf Club, bringing together former Mack employees and muster participants.

Building on the success of the previous event, which drew 175 Mack trucks, organisers are aiming to attract more than 200 vehicles in 2026.

“It is not just Mack trucks at the muster, all other brands are welcome, too,” Tim said.

“We have a different section for all other makes and models, for anyone who is into old trucks, to bring along.”

The muster will be hosted at the Kyabram Showgrounds in Allan St, with cash-only entry available at the gates.

Exhibitors can participate without charge. For information and to secure a ticket to the Saturday night dinner, follow Kyabram Mack Muster on Facebook.

The event offers art lovers the opportunity to step inside the creative spaces of local artists throughout the Shire of Campaspe.

The trail offers a distinctive experience,

allowing visitors to interact directly with artists, watch them at work, and learn about their creative methods.

Art enthusiasts can purchase works directly from the artists’ studios at prices below standard gallery rates.

Chris Hartley, a returning artist from the 2025 trail, shares her artistic background.

“‘I’ve been an artist all my life. I was always

mixed media, Chris explains her creative focus.

“I combine ideas together because I am a contemporary artist, I don’t go for realism or anything like that,” she said.

“It is more about colour, space, line and shape.

“I work in acrylic paints and then I sometimes use collage or printmaking to work in with my work and combine different techniques.”

The success of the inaugural event in 2025 drew visitors from 97 different postcodes.

“On both days of the 2025 trail, I had people come to the studio from lots of different places, like Geelong, somebody from the Western District, Gippsland and then local people as well,” Chris said.

Over 25 artists or more are expected to open studios in every part of Campaspe Shire in 2026.

Three community art spaces may open as part of the Campaspe Artists Studio Trail for artists who practise their art at home and don’t have a publicly accessible studio.

Barking good time at Kyabram’s new dog park

A brand new off-leash dog park was opened in Kyabram in September, heralding benefits for dogs and their owners alike.

Located at Edis Park on Oswald St, the site was celebrated with free dog treats and toys at its official opening.

Uncle Rick Ronnan performed a smoking ceremony for attendees, and said he had received a “barking good” reception from the crowd.

He took the opportunity to remind everyone to respect the land after performing a Welcome to Country, and extend the respect to each other.

The park was a Campaspe Shire Council project that received support under a Federal Government infrastructure and road program.

During a speech, Mayor Daniel Mackrell recognised the community’s input to the project, which was highlighted as a priority in the Kyabram Place Based Plan.

“It’s wonderful to welcome you all here today,” he said.

“This park will be a fantastic addition for our dogs, but also provides a safe space for community connection and wellbeing.”

Vonda Meloni, who was heavily involved in the dog park’s development, was invited to address the crowd.

She said that the project’s completion had been eagerly awaited by Kyabram residents, and was delighted with the local enthusiasm.

“It’s been inspiring to see how much passion our community has for creating spaces that bring people together, and in this case, our dogs, too,” Ms Meloni said.

“This park is more than just a fenced area with some green grass. It represents collaboration, persistence and community spirit.”

Kyabram Men’s Longest Lunch

Getting together to talk about men’s health is important and embraced by Kyabram locals each year.

The 11th annual Kyabram Men’s Longest Lunch will be held at Kyabram Parkland Golf Club on Friday, February 27, 2026.

One of the most popular events held each year in Kyabram, the 2025 lunch saw 180 guests share insights into local men’s health and raise $27,000 to donate to Kyabram District Health Service.

The donation funded vital medical technology, specifically a state-of-the-art patient monitor and a much-needed bladder scanner, enhancing patient care at the regional centre.

Over the past 11 years the event has raised over $150,000, with all funds being used to raise awareness of men’s health problems and funding medical equipment for men’s health at KDHS.

The 2026 lunch will be a laid-back affair, with entertainment, sports stars and local men sharing their personal health journey.

Plans are going ahead for the 2026 lunch to top the 2025 event, where the likes of comedian Dave O’Neil and former St Kilda Football Club player Steven Baker entertained the guests.

Closer to the date of the Kyabram Men’s Longest Lunch, tickets will be available through Walker’s Real Estate, Kyabram.

Discover Kyabram’s bocce club

The Kyabram Italian Social Bocce Club has been celebrating this traditional sport for over 50 years.

Kyabram Italian Social Bocce Club treasurer Joe Greco has been involved with the club from the start.

“It was founded in 1974 by the early immigrants to the area,” Joe said.

“Many of whom had migrated to Australia in search of a better life.

“They worked hard, and for their own entertainment, they started playing bocce, an Italian sport, in their backyards.

“And as more and more migrants arrived, the backyard games got too big and government regulations prohibited them from doing many things, so they formed a club, so everyone could socialise and play their sport.

“Last year, 2024, was the 50th year of the Kyabram bocce club.”

Joe arrived in the Kyabram area as a twoyear-old in 1952, after his father settled there on a market garden, later becoming a tomato and beef farmer and orchardist.

Joe first got involved in the Kyabram bocce club to help out the other migrants.

“I got involved from the very beginning because of the rules and regulations,” he said.

“Most of the Italians that migrated here didn’t understand what was going on and needed somebody that could speak English.

“So that is where I came into the picture.

“They came and saw me, and I didn’t want to be involved because I was a young bloke with other interests.

“But it finished up, my wife said to me, ‘Well, you are doing it for your parents. They won’t be able to do it if you don’t do it.’

“So, I went ahead, and I’ve been there ever since.”

Around the district, the Kyabram Italian Social Bocce Club is known for its authentic pasta nights, which are now held three times a year for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and the first Wednesday in December for Christmas.

The Kyabram Italian Social Bocce Club is open on Wednesdays for raffa bocce games, another discipline of the game that is more accessible to the elderly and families.

You can find the Kyabram Italian Social Bocce Club at 118 Fisher St, Kyabram.

Easter fun at historic lawn tennis tournament

People travel from across the state to play on some of the premier lawn courts in the region.

The tournament brings more than 250 people to the town who support the community and accommodation options.

With players competing across three days in multiple events such as doubles, singles, mixed doubles and veterans doubles, the tournament has a special and steeped history, with the internal competition running annually for

almost a century and is the major fundraiser for the club.

It is the final event for the club each season and provides a nice platform for club members and families to come together after a busy summer.

The 2025 edition of the event saw the return of veterans doubles events for those aged over 30, the first time these events have been held since before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The weekend was the first time Kyabram Lawn Tennis Club offered prize money on all days, with every open event winner and runnerup being sponsored by Hurley’s Bar and Bistro.

Major sponsor Kyabram Club gave $1500 to assist in the set up and running of the tournament.

• We also have our Gargarro Regional Botanic gardens.

Just down the road: Girgarre

Girgarre is a welcoming haven for community music enthusiasts, where artistic expression forms the heartbeat of local life.

Flourishing with the annual Moosic Muster, Jigarre Jammin’, the monthly produce and craft market, the Gargarro Botanic Gardens, and many more community events.

The Girgarre Development Group Inc. has nurtured a thriving produce and craft market for over two decades, transforming it from a modest six stalls into a bustling marketplace with over 150 vendors.

Girgarre Development Group Inc. secretary Jan Smith wanted music at the market from the start, which grew into the Moosic Muster and Jigarre Jammin’.

“It was just one little idea that a person I had known over the years had,” Jan said.

“I got him to get some music for the first market and that is how the Moosic Muster grew.

“I asked them all back 12 months later to see what they helped to create as the market had blossomed.

“Then that night, they said, ‘We ought to have a music festival here’.”

So began Moosic Muster.

The Saturday of the muster is taken over by workshops, from ukulele to jazz experiences and Australasian music to clogging in the hall.

“They have open mics, where you can facilitate hopping up and playing with a few of your mates,” Jan said.

“They have a beaut thing called the ‘Hat Band’, where you put your name in a hat, your name is pulled out randomly.

“Half a dozen of you learn to play a song

together, then perform it in front of everybody.

“It is tremendous because there are always good musos with some learners and it pulls everyone along.

“Everyone gets the joy of performing; it is amazing.”

The Moosic Muster warmly welcomes everyone, regardless of musical experience or instrument ownership, ensuring a truly inclusive community event.

You can always lend an instrument, and someone will teach you how to play it.

During Moosic Muster, free concerts are held at the sound shell in the Gargarro Botanic Gardens on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Girgarre Moosic Muster is held in January each year.

JIGARRE JAMMIN’

Jigarre Jammin’ started when people wanted more community music, not just once a year at Moosic Muster.

From February to November, Jigarre Jammin’ is held on the fourth Saturday of the month in the Girgarre Memorial Hall.

This community-minded gathering encourages people who want to play together, regardless of their skills or experience level.

Along with the monthly jam, Jigarre Jammin’ holds two, three-day camps in Girgarre each year in April and September.

GARGARRO BOTANIC GARDENS

The newly unveiled Gargarro Botanic Gardens, opened in May 2023, is a cutting-edge botanical wonderland showcasing innovative garden design, eco-friendly practices, and a celebration of Indigenous flora.

The garden’s design reflects the region’s dry landscape, celebrating native flora and precious water resources, overlaid with a celebration of Australia’s indigenous history.

A unique feature of the Gargarro Botanic Gardens is the Sound Shell, a world-class amphitheatre for outdoor musical and theatrical performances.

In November, Showdown at the Sound Shell, a youth music competition for those aged between 12 and 18, is held there.

Friends of Gargarro Botanic Gardens hold a fundraising Girgarre Open Gardens Festival in late October, opening the gates of local gardens for you to explore and gather gardening ideas.

Visitors can now explore various offerings, including plants, crafts, food, and garage sale items.

Located on Birdwood Ave, Stanhope’s main street, the dog-friendly market is free to enter from 8am to 1pm.

Those interested in setting up a stall can make bookings through the Stanhope Community Market Facebook page.

A town favourite, the op shop, and the supermarket are also open on the day.

Shaque-A-Taque on the main street features unique handcrafted woodwork and Australian décor, featuring some good old Aussie humour and locally handmade gifts and novelties.

MONTEVIDEO MARU MURAL

A stunning mural painted by Tim Bowtell in 2022 is in the centre of town, adjacent to McEwen Place and the war memorial.

It is a tribute to honour those who made the brave and patriotic decision in 1940 to voluntarily enlist, serving in the 2/22 Battalion of the Australian Army, known as Lark Force.

On July 1, 1942, 853 Australian POWs and 200 civilian POWs were lost when the Japanese merchant ship was torpedoed and sunk by the American submarine, the USS Sturgeon.

All perished, including three servicemen who enlisted from Stanhope.

This tragedy remains the largest maritime disaster in Australian history.

A project of the Stanhope RSL Sub Branch (founded in 1918) in collaboration with the Stanhope and District Development Committee.

FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL

The Stanhope Food and Wine Festival brings the community together in October and highlights the region’s excellent food offerings.

The street party includes various activities, including food and wine from local vendors, music and children’s entertainment. For more information and everything Stanhope, go to www.stanhopevic.org.au

DELVE INTO ROCHESTER’S PAST

The Rochester Historical & Pioneer Society, was established in 1967 and later amalgamated with the Pioneer Society in 1986.

The society plays a crucial role in preserving and showcasing the rich history of the Rochester district.

Its primary purpose is to house and maintain

an extensive collection of artefacts, documents, photographs, and other materials that illuminate the early history and development of the region.

The society operates a museum complex that includes two significant historical buildings: the restored Common School, dating back to 1874, and the Salvation Army Hall, built in 1926.

Through its museum and collections, the Rochester Historical & Pioneer Society offers valuable educational opportunities for residents and visitors alike, fostering an understanding and appreciation the district’s heritage.

The society’s efforts ensure that the stories and experiences of the pioneers and early settlers are preserved for future generations.

Further information and resources can be found at the society’s website and through historical directories such as History Victoria and the Campaspe Shire Council’s community directory.

These buildings serve as the primary spaces for displaying the society’s diverse collection and providing storage for the historical materials.

The restored Common School offers a glimpse into the early educational practices of the area, while the Salvation Army Hall provides insight into the social and community activities of the past.

Additionally, the Australian Museums and Galleries Association provides a listing for the society’s museum, offering another way for those interested in learning more about Rochester’s history.

Rochester Historical & Pioneer Society is at 96-98 High St, Rochester and is open Wednesday and Friday, 9am to noon, or by appointment.
