Shaping the next generation

Choosing the right place for apprenticeships is crucial for building skilled and job-ready employees.

GOTAFE provides a supportive environment for apprentices to develop the hands on experience and technical expertise your business needs.

Logan Hall, a second year apprentice in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (UEE32220), is just one example of the skilled professionals being shaped at GOTAFE.

Logan’s interest in refrigeration began with work experience during school.

“I was lucky enough to do some work experience while I was at school, and I really enjoyed it, so I stuck with it,” he said.

Today, he is an apprentice with DB Refrigeration & Air Conditioning in Yarrawonga, where he applies the skills he has learned through GOTAFE’s practical training.

“The best part of this trade is the different places we go and the work we do,” Logan said.

“You never know what each day will bring, but I know I will always be learning something new.”

Logan’s experience highlights the skills he has been able to translate into his workplace.

At GOTAFE, students are exposed to the kinds of technical challenges they will face in their careers.

“At GOTAFE, I often encounter technical problems I haven’t seen before,” he said.

“It really prepares me to go back and show colleagues what I’ve learned.”

By partnering with GOTAFE, employers gain apprentices who are not only trained in the latest industry practices, but also equipped with problem solving skills and practical experience.

Whether you are looking to nurture future talent or strengthen your workforce, GOTAFE offers a reliable pipeline of capable apprentices who are ready to contribute from day one.

With GOTAFE by your side, YOU’VE GOT THIS.

Thriving in a regional setting

Keziah Stute is currently in her third year of Speech Pathology and joined GV Health in October 2023 after working in NDIS community settings.

“I wanted to try out the hospital setting and felt that a regional health service would give me a broad range of experience,” she said.

“GV Health stood out because of the opportunity to work with both adults and children, and I was really keen to work with the Indigenous community, something I hadn’t experienced in my previous roles.”

Since starting, Keziah has hit the ground running, providing care across the hospital, conducting swallowing and communication assessments for patients with strokes, pneumonia, Parkinson’s and other conditions.

She’s also been actively involved in GV Health’s Community Connector program to build professional and social connections.

Keziah says what makes her job rewarding is the impact she can have on people’s lives.

“Being able to support someone as they transition back home after a hospital stay is really special,” she said.

“I love coming to work every day knowing I’m making a difference.”

For those considering a career in speech pathology, Keziah has some simple advice:

“If you’re passionate about healthcare and making a difference, it’s a great career,” she said.

“You can work in so many areas, schools, hospitals, private practice and the community.

“It’s broad, impactful, and there’s always more to learn.”

Coming from Melbourne, Keziah has embraced the sense of community and support in the regional setting.

“Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, it feels like you’re part of something meaningful.”

Finding home at GV Health

Originally from India, Jim Jose has over 13 years of international nursing experience, including five years in India and seven years in South Africa.

A highly experienced neurosurgical theatre nurse by background, Jim made the leap to GV Health in 2024 and now works as a Registered Nurse in the Rehabilitation Unit.

His move to Australia was inspired by his wife, who secured a role in Shepparton’s Operating Theatre.

While transitioning, Jim completed additional qualifications and requirements to meet Australian nursing standards and gain registration.

“I was working as a personal care assistant while I studied for my exams and completed my clinical competencies,” he said.

“GV Health’s education team was incredibly supportive throughout that process.”

Although Jim’s background is in theatre, he has embraced the challenges and rewards of rehab nursing, supporting patients recovering from strokes and other conditions to regain independence.

“Rehab is very different from theatre, but I’ve felt supported every step of the way,” he said.

“The senior staff helped me learn the medication system and adjust to bedside care.

“It’s a very team-oriented environment.”

Jim and his family love life in Shepparton.

“It’s peaceful, not crowded like the big cities,” he said.

“We’ve got everything we need here, and the community is welcoming and friendly.”

Jim has also completed a postgraduate qualification in geriatric nursing and is passionate about continuing to grow in this field.

The GVW farm team is at the heart of this mission and is proud to offer a wide range of career opportunities in fields like farming, irrigation and environmental sustainability.

Among those is farm operator

progress to her current position as a farm operator.

Looking to the future, Kaitlyn hopes to continue growing her career at GVW, with aspirations of pursuing a Diploma in Agriculture in the next five years.

Seda College uses sport and real-life industry experience to engage students in their learning.

At SEDA, students who share a passion for sports thrive in an applied, hands on learning environment.

Partnering with Australia’s leading sport, recreation, community, and trade organisations, such as AFL Victoria, Basketball Victoria, Cricket Australia, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Vixens, students gain real world industry experiences.

The SEDA model places student interests at the forefront of their senior secondary education, integrating practical connections to industry.

Students at the school are able to gain a first hand insight into what it is like to be a part of Australia’s leading organisations and sporting clubs.

SEDA College’s individualised learning transforms students’ lives and provides unique opportunities to develop practical skills for a successful future.

Their distinctive ‘one teacher, one classroom’ model fosters a genuine mentoring approach, enabling teachers to walk alongside and support each student’s individual journey through their secondary education.

In a typical week, students spend 2.5 days in the classroom, one day delivering sport clinics in the community, and one day gaining industry experience in a structured workplace.

Activities throughout the year, such as presentations on health promotion strategies, coaching sessions with elite partners, and engaging in sports like surfing and skiing, enhance the SEDA College experience.

Career advice is integral to their program, with all students completing their ‘MyJOURNEY,’ a digital professional portfolio linking skills and industry experiences to educational and employment pathways.

Their teachers, supported by the professional pathways team, guide students through this process, ensuring a seamless transition into their desired future.

SEDA College VIC Principal Heath McMillin said their mission was to ensure that every SEDA College

Resumé writing tips to grab attention

Tips tailored to different industries

In today’s crowded job market, your resumé isn’t just a document—it’s your personal marketing pitch.

With recruiters often spending just a few seconds reviewing each one, it’s critical that yours stands out for all the right reasons.

But here’s what many overlook: a winning resumé must be customised not only to the job but to the expectations of the industry. Here’s how to get it right.

Understand the industry expectations Each sector has its own resumé standards — what works in one industry may fall flat in another.

Corporate/administrative roles

• Use a clean, professional layout with standard fonts and formatting.

• Use bullet points and strong action verbs like managed, implemented and streamlined.

Creative industries (design, marketing, media)

• A visually dynamic resumé is often welcome. Consider layout, subtle use of colour and modern typography.

• Include links to your online portfolio

or samples of work.

• Emphasise collaboration, campaign success and storytelling.

Technical and IT roles

• Focus on technical skills, programming languages and relevant certifications.

• Place a technical skills summary near the top.

Skilled trades and vocational jobs

• Prioritise practical experience, hands‑on skills, and licences.

• List certifications (eg. First Aid or trade‑specific credentials).

• Mention equipment expertise, safety compliance and efficiency gains.

Education and healthcare

• Emphasise credentials, continuing education and relevant licences.

• Use terminology that reflects care, service or pedagogy.

• Highlight outcomes such as test score improvements or patient care achievements.

Structure for impact

A strong resumé structure is essential across all industries. A good format to follow:

• Header: Name, contact details,

LinkedIn or portfolio link if applicable.

• Professional summary: A concise three to four line snapshot of your strengths and goals.

• Skills summary: Tailored to the job posting.

• Work experience: Reverse chronological order, emphasising achievements.

• Education and certifications: Include dates and institutions.

Customise every time Sending out the same resumé for multiple applications is a missed opportunity.

Adjust your resumé to match each job’s specific requirements:

• Mirror the language and keywords from the job posting.

• Emphasise relevant experience for that particular role.

What to avoid

Even a well‑written resumé can be undermined by avoidable missteps:

• Don’t use a generic career objective. Focus on what you offer, not just what you want.

• Remove outdated skills unless specifically relevant (eg fax machines, basic MS Office).

• Avoid vague phrases like “hardworking” or “team player” — show these through your achievements.

• Never exaggerate or falsify information. It’s easy to check, and trust once lost can’t be regained.

Insights from hiring professionals

Here’s what recruiters commonly say about attention grabbing resumés:

• Make your strengths obvious within the first few lines.

• Use numbers where possible — metrics help validate your contributions.

• Keep it concise: one page for entry‑level roles, up to two for experienced professionals.

A strong resumé tells your story clearly and confidently..

Whether you’re entering the workforce, switching industries, or climbing the ladder, tailoring your resumé to your field — and the job at hand — will set you apart in a competitive market.
