Lazzaroni Maraschino

Maraschino is one of the oldest liqueurs produced by Lazzaroni. In the company archive, recipes and labels date back to 1860. It is a clear, relatively dry liqueur made from the infusion of marasca cherries and their crushed pits, which give the liquid a slight bitter almond flavor. It’s used primarily in the preparation of some sweets, for example, to make the syrup of sponge cake, in fruit salads and fruit cakes.

67688 - 750ML - $28.99

Lost Lantern Far-Flung Rye

This is a blend of straight ryes, ranging from four to nine years old, from five of the finest distilleries in the Midwest. It has bright rye spice and fresh-cut grass on the nose. The palate is spicy, with rich oak and hints of dark chocolate and warm bread.

900816 - 750ML - $99.99

Garrison Brothers Small Batch Texas Straight Bourbon

Garrison Brothers is the first legal whiskey distillery in Texas. Its premium ingredients, meticulous process and scorching Texas heat yield a spirit impossible to forget. This awardwinning Small Batch Bourbon is a legendary Texas bourbon. It embodies the rich, bold flavors forged in the Texas sun, delivering a full-bodied, 94-proof experience.

18390 - 750ML - $79.99

St. George NOLA Coffee Liqueur

A coffee liqueur made by people who love to drink coffee. St. George sources Yirgacheffe coffee beans from Ethiopia and has them roasted locally to specification. Then, it brings the roasted beans to the distillery, grinding and cold-infusing them. The cold-infusion method preserves the elegant flavors and aromas that they love from the beans, while minimizing the extraction of astringent components. It then blends the resulting coffee infusion with French-roast chicory and Madagascar vanilla beans and lightly sweetens it with cane sugar.

77433 - 750ML - $32.99

1800 Ultimate Light Lime

1800 The Ultimate Margarita Original Light is made with premium tequila, perfectly blended with the extract of lime for a refreshingly crisp cocktail and sweetness with a delicate touch of agave nectar to deliver a margarita with just 120 calories per serving. Just pour over ice and enjoy.

Back on the shelf

Yankee Wine & Spirits co-owners, Scott Cameron (left) and his stepson, Brent Marcellus, hold up some popular made-in-Vermont products: Barr Hill Gin and Malvado Maple Mezcal.

YANKEE WINE AND SPIRITS REOPENS BUSINESS, ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME

In the heart of Montpelier’s historic business district, on the street level of the Seguin Block, you’ll find Yankee Wine & Spirits. Scott Cameron and his stepson, Brent Marcellus, purchased the store from prior owners in 2012. Even before then, the business had been a neighbor to the library, three churches, the City Center shopping center and many locally owned restaurants and businesses. It’s a neighborhood that’s still recovering from when the Winooski River crested its banks in 2023, flooding the downtown area with feet of mucky water.

TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE RALLIES COMMUNITY AROUND BUSINESSES

“Montpelier is a little gem of a city,” Cameron says. “It was really harmed by the flood. We are experiencing a lot of rebuilding now.”

Yankee Wine & Spirits was among the businesses closed by the flood damage.

The water had filled the store up 3 feet deep, says Cameron, just to the top of the countertops. Bottles that floated off shelves were strewn about. Each product had to be dumped out and the container discarded.

“It pretty much wiped us out and closed us down for a year,” says Marcellus.

Floors, wallboard, electrical systems and shelves were replaced amid the repairs. As part of efforts to make the building more resilient to future flooding, they installed foam insulation, a hybrid water heater and moved the compressor for the cold storage room into the ceiling.

Other neighboring businesses, and the city as a whole, are in various stages of recovery. Just this spring, State Street underwent additional water and sewer repairs.

Cameron says that Yankee Wine & Spirits aims to help support the community through the recovery.

“We're trying to be part of the resurgence of the city of Montpelier and to contribute what we can to the city through organizations like Montpelier Alive and the Chamber of Commerce,” he says.

Brent Marcellus stocks the shelves of Yankee Wine & Spirits.

BUSINESS COOPERATION CRITICAL TO AGENCY STORE’S SUCCESS

Yankee Wine & Spirits serves most of the nearby restaurants and bars as the only 802Spirits agency store in the capital. About half of the city’s 50 food and drink establishments were directly affected by the flood, Montpelier Alive told Seven Days in Sept. 2023.

Prior to the flooding, Yankee Wine & Spirits was adjacent to Hugo’s Bar and Grill, which operated in the historic Lobster Pot building, marked by the iconic “restaurant” sign on the roof. Amid the recovery, Hugo’s moved to a new location, on the second and third floors of the Bruce Block. While many of the damaged restaurants in Montpelier, including Three Penny Taproom and The Mad Taco have reopened, the loss of time in their spaces and employees to other jobs has been a setback to tourism and the local hospitality business.

The flooding reshaped not only the

city’s landscape but also its business dynamics, deepening Yankee Wine & Spirits’ commitment to supporting the restaurant community through tailored service and reliable supply.

After flooding swept through the historic business

The store was able to make some improvements to make it more resilient in the event of future flooding. Customers might also notice the new flooring and improved check-out counter.

“Catering to the restaurant customers and their specialties is something that we really pay a lot of attention to,” Cameron says. “They’re some of our best clients, and we wouldn't exist without them. They have sometimes special needs that the average consumer isn't even thinking about.”

They gave the example of an Italian restaurant in the city, which uses a particular type of Marsala wine.

“Sarducci's makes just a wonderful Marsala sauce, whether you're getting

chicken or veal,” says Cameron. “And we sell an awful lot of a special, certain brand of Marsala wine to Sarducci’s.”

CUSTOMER SERVICE MEANS FINDING NICHE PRODUCTS

Finding high-interest, limited edition products isn’t just something they do for commercial customers, though. Individual customers sometimes come in with unusual requests. But Cameron says there

district of Montpelier, where Yankee Wine & Spirits is located, it took nearly a year to reopen.

Malvado Diablo

2 ounces Malvado Maple Mezcal

are ways to get it either from a different 802Spirits agency store or the state of Vermont.

product then gets sent to a store near them, and they get an email to pick it up. So there are different ways you can work to help people find the products they need.”

When Cameron and Marcellus took over, they were able to harness the growth of Vermont’s craft beer boom. The store had sold some beer before, but mostly national-brand names. Yankee Wine & Spirits was among the

ready-to-drink cocktails are on the rise, while whiskeys keep constant interest.

Marcellus noted that he used to see seasonal shifts in people’s drinking habits. That cyclical pattern faded.

“People are drinking whatever they want to drink, whenever they want to drink, rather than it being seasonally specific,” Marcellus says.

STORE COMMITS TO HIGHLIGHTING VERMONT BRANDS

The store makes an effort to call attention to made-in-Vermont products with special displays.

“We keep all Vermont products clustered together in their various categories,” says Marcellus. “We really love to go and help

state,” Cameron says.

Another Vermont product that Marcellus is excited about is the new Malvado Maple Mezcal from St. Johnsbury Distillery.

“It’s a maple mezcal that’s actually pretty nice,” says Marcellus.

The store hosts tastings and is working to increase the frequency to what it was before the flooding.

“When we do tastings, we really almost exclusively do Vermont distilleries and Vermont breweries and wineries, because that's where I think there's a real level of interest,” Cameron says. “And the quality of the spirits that are coming out of Vermont distilleries is really quite high.”

Those tastings often pay off well, selling seven or eight bottles within two hours.

“Once people buy it, they tend to recommend it to friends,” Cameron says. “It's quite an effective marketing tool.”

As the city continues to recover, Yankee Wine & Spirits aims to meet the unique needs of its customers, whether they’re restaurants or individuals. Supporting local businesses and connecting Vermontmade spirits, beers and wines with Vermont-owned restaurants is still a central part of its vision.

“Our goal is really to be part of the rebuilding and the resurgence of the city,” Cameron says, “and I think as the city comes back, that'll really be helpful to us, too.”
