CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM ROBERT LAMBERT - YOUR CLUB MANAGER Can you believe it? The holidays are just around the corner! It’s a wonderful time of the year to spend with family, friends, and of course activities & gatherings at the club. It will be soon time to ring in the new year, so mark your calendar to celebrate at the Water’s Edge with the Legacy Motown Revue. You can enjoy the holidays and the traditions that they bring while creating memories here at the Water’s Edge on beautiful Smith Mountain Lake. We realize that the holidays can be stressful and busy, so let our culinary staff help you with holiday cooking and baking. Please call us as you plan your holidays. May your holiday celebrations be filled with fun, family time, and good health. I am excited to announce that we will be starting a Water’s Edge Wine Club at the beginning of 2024. Further details to be provided at a later date. I would like to thank all our members who have supported our community engagement program Footprints on the Green. We are blessed with so many wonderful and generous members. Your contributions support local programs like Stepping Stone Mission and the Cool Branch Fire Department & Rescue Squad. Special thank you to all those who volunteered, donated and helped make these events a tremendous success. We hope to see you at the club soon for some of our fun events. Some scheduled events include: Thanksgiving Buffet, Meet Your Neighbor Friday, November 11th from and on Friday, December 8th , Footloose on Friday November 17th, live music with Marie Anderson and December 1st, live music with Annalyse Marie, and our New Year’s Eve Gala Dinner & Dance December 31st.

CLUB UPDATE A NOTE FROM JEFF SNYDER - YOUR GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT We have been very busy since our last writing. I would like to thank all involved and played in the Cool Branch Event, which was HUGE success. The greens were aerified last month and are healed up and ready for some fall golf. We got our “first round” of overseeding done, fairways and roughs, prior to our bulk fertilizer application. We had very little rain during the following weeks and we did our best to keep the seed moist while not being too wet. We’re currently focusing on sodding our worst areas and will be plugging and seeding others throughout the course. Please do your best with carts on the course and avoid seeded areas. Moving into the fall, we will be continuing to “push” our weaker areas that we’ve been working on. Tees will be aerified after our closing days. I have a root pruner on site and have big plans for it this fall. Trees, as wonderful as they are, are ”out competing” our grasses in many areas. The root pruner will be run along the tree line and cart path edges. While this may be a bit disruptive in areas, we’ll clean up quickly and end results is what we’re after. Leaves are falling and we’ll do our best to stay on top of them.

As we move into the winter we will be focusing on trees and leveling sprinkler heads. Please remember to replace divots as well as reminding your guests to do the same. This is even more important at this time of year as we are blowing leaves. Replace what you can, step it down, sand balance if needed. Don’t forget ball marks as well, yours and one other. As a reminder, personal carts are not allowed on the course. Only golfers who are walking the course are allowed during club hours. Please do not use the course for personal walking.

A NOTE FROM RUTH RICE -YOUR MEMBER SERVICES DIRECTOR Reminders: McConnell Golf takes a slightly different approach for the Employee Holiday Fund. children at Christmas alone. Their Christmas event involves having approximately 100 volunteers over a period of a week. During the week, they have the parents of the children come and shop at their Christmas "store". At the end of the week, they have a party for the children. The party involves refreshments, games, and, of course, SANTA CLAUS. Just to see the look on a child's face when they see Santa and knowing that they will have something to open on Christmas morning makes Christmas more meaningful. One of the amazing qualities of their organization is that every dollar that is donated stays right here in Franklin County. We Care relies solely on donations that they receive from the community that allow the to continue having such a wonderful event. As part of The Water’s Edge Footprints on the Green initiative, we are collecting new, unwrapped toys from November 1st-December 8th. There will be a drop box at the clubhouse for donations. If you have in questions or would like to volunteer for We Care, please call Jerry W. Greer at 540-483-7900. NOVEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH BY SAM TESSMAN, LINE COOK AT HOLSTON HILLS CC

Russian Tea Cookie Recipe My mother makes these cookies every holiday season and it is just one of those things I look forward to each year. They are so tasty and are one of my absolute favorite things about the holidays.

Directions:

Ingredients: 2 Cups Butter, softened 1 Cup Powdered Sugar 2 TSP Vanilla 4 1/2 Cups Gold Medal™ All-Purpose Flour 1 1/2 Cups Pecans, finely chopped (Pecans may be replaced for walnuts) 1/2 TSP Salt Powdered Sugar for Tossing

Mix vanilla, 1 cup of powdered sugar and butter in a large bowl until combined. Stir in flour, nuts and salt and continue mixing until a soft dough is formed. Preheat oven to 400°F. Roll dough into 1/2 inch balls and place on ungreased baking pan lined with parchment paper 1 inch apart. Bake for 10 minutes until cookies are set, but not browned. Transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly. While cookies are still slightly warm toss in powdered sugar.

DECEMBER COOKIE OF THE MONTH BY BY EMILY MONTIMURRO, PASTRY CHEF AT PORTERS NECK CC

Directions:

This is my version of the Italian wedding/holiday cookie called “Tadal” which is traditionally flavored with Anisette and has a drier, crumbly texture. To make them more shelf-stable and palate-friendly to adults and children alike, I created a recipe where ricotta cheese keeps them soft and chewy, and flavored them with vanilla. They lend themselves to any holiday, happy occasion, or cup of coffee. Ingredients: Glaze Ingredients: 1 Pound Butter 8 TBSP Milk 3 1/2 Cups Sugar 3 Cups 10x Confectioners Sugar 4 Eggs 1 TSP Almond Extract (optional) 30oz Ricotta Cheese 4 TBSP Vanilla 8 Cups All-Purpose Flour 2 TSP Baking Powder 2 TSP Baking Soda

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, ricotta and vanilla. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. Add dry ingredients to the ricotta mixture until fully incorporated. Chill & scoop; Bake for 12-15 minutes at 350°F depending on size. Allow to cool on sheets before transferring. Mix glaze, making sure it’s not too drippy.
