SEDGEFIELD ANGEL TREE

A NOTE FROM YOUR TRIAD MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

The Sedgefield Angel Tree Golf tournament raised a record $110,000 this year for the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. This helped the Salvation Army of Greensboro fulfill Christmas for 1,800 children this year and our community filled 450 of them!

Another trip around the sun has set, and the dawn of a new year is upon us. As we enter 2024, we are another year closer to the 100-year anniversary of Sedgefield Country Club coming up in 2026. 98 years is a long time, but we are just getting started telling the story of Sedgefield CC! While golf is the main draw, Sedgefield is much more than that. The amenities and facilities are world-class, but the people are what make the club the jewel that it is. The members, long-term and new alike, weave the fabric of the club, while the dedicated staff ties it all together, creating experiences and memories to last a lifetime! As 2024 begins, I am looking forward to seeing you and your family and guests at the club this year. Additionally, one of my favorite things is when I see a Sedgefield member at another property that I visit. I encourage you to use your reciprocity and visit all of the McConnell Golf properties this year! All are unique in their own way and provide unforgettable experiences. 2024 is going to be an amazing year, and I cannot wait to see all that it has in store! Chad Flowers

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

I hope this message finds you well as we head into a new year. Overall, 2023 was a successful year for the agronomy team. We did experience some small winter kills on holes #5 and #10 last winter that were quickly sodded once the weather allowed. The sod we installed is a newer variety of bermuda, and we are going to monitor how it handles the challenges of the growing environments on those two holes. The greens have done really well this fall and were very lush heading into the winter months. We were able to successfully allow them to grow a little taller while still maintaining a respectable ball roll and speed. Please remember that during the winter months, we use white plastic inserts at the top edge of the putting green cups instead of paint. This is a procedure we implement when the weather gets too cold for the turf to grow and repair old cup marks. We also do not change hole locations every day like our normal standard during the growing season, and this allows for better putting surfaces during the winter months with fewer old cup marks.

If you have been out to the Cardinal in the past month, you have seen that there is a big project underway. I thought it might be best to use this letter to explain what is going on and what we can all expect. Through the middle of the course is the main sewage line from the airport and the surrounding neighborhood. The line is very deep and was installed around the same time the course was built, in the 1970’s. Due to all of the new construction at the airport, the sewage line needs to be enlarged.

Please keep in mind that the next three months are when we typically have some weather patterns move in that produce cold enough temperatures that warrant us to put out the protective covers on the greens to help prevent any winter damage. We are constantly monitoring the long-range forecast and we will try to give ample notice of any course closures we may experience. Winter gives us a chance to catch up on things around the course that sometimes we get behind on during the growing season and leaf season. We will be working on things such as checking all sand depths in bunkers, edging all mulch beds, pruning dead or low limbs, irrigation head audit, leveling irrigation heads around greens, drainage projects, bush hogging all natural areas, and fixing several immediate creek bank issues while still keeping up with the daily maintenance of the course. Thanks for all your support last year, and we look forward to a great 2024! Stay warm and I hope to see you around the club. Chad Cromer

Through the month of December, all the work that was being done was just in preparation for the project. A large mat road had to be made through the course for their equipment. A large silt fence had to be installed to prevent debris from running into the creek, and a bypass sewage line has to be installed before work can begin. The work on upgrading the sewage line should begin in early January 2024. Once the work begins, as I understand it, they will begin on 14 and going up 15. The sewage line crosses the creek in front of 15 green and continues along the creek before going into the woods behind 3 green. Just so you know, they will NOT be digging a trench through the course. They will be digging a large hole at every other manhole cover and pulling the new expanded line through the ground. Once they cross the creek on 15 and begin to work toward 3, all of the mats and silt fence will be removed on 14 and 15. The city of Greensboro has agreed to pay for all of the repairs to the course. We have already secured a golf course construction company to come in and do a final grade to sod in all of the disturbed. We have been told that the work on the sewage line should be completed by March. I cannot promise anything, but I am hopeful that by the end of April, all work will have been completed and all of the disturbed areas will have been repaired. Let’s all hope for warm and dry weather so the work on the course can be completed as quickly as possible. We will do our best to keep all holes open through this project. There will be times when we need to move the tees up and play the hole as a par 3, or even have a hole closed. Please be patient with us and the golf shop staff, as we will be doing everything we can to keep all holes open while also keeping the project moving as fast as possible. Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year! Ross Jernigan

2024 REVISIONS TO WORLD HANDICAP SYSTEM

Happy New Year, and welcome to 2024! We hope that you have been able to spend time with your family and friends over the past couple of weeks. For me, the start of the new year is always a time to reflect on the previous year and set new goals for the upcoming year. Looking back at 2023, my wife and I welcomed our third child and first boy to our family. We have been so blessed with this addition to our family.

The USGA and The R&A recently announced the latest update to the World Handicap System™ (WHS™) as part of an ongoing review of the Rules of Handicapping™ and Course Rating System™ with a continued emphasis on accuracy, consistency and equity. The latest revisions will go into effect beginning January 1, 2024. The 2024 update leverages the performance data gathered from around the world, in addition to feedback received from many of the 125 countries now using the system.

Have you had time to put together that all-important New Year’s Resolution list? If so, what do you need to improve to play your best golf this year? The Golf Professional Staff would like to set up a time with you to discuss ways to make your resolutions come to fruition. Our goal is to help you better manage your game this year, on and off the golf course. We are very excited for our 2024 Tournament Schedule to be released in the upcoming weeks. Back by popular demand will be our Spring and Fall Sedgefield Cup (Men’s Member-Guest) along with the Herron Cup (Men’s Member-Member) this summer. Both our Ladies and Senior Golf Associations are finalizing their dates for their respective events and will be sent out to the membership once available. One of our most attended events throughout the season is Friday Night Couple’s Golf. These events are always sure to sell out and is a great way to meet new members that you might not otherwise know. The Spring will begin to heat up with our Ladies and Junior instructional programs. We are confident that we will get you learning and on the golf course playing golf and having fun. Also, new for this year will be the addition of a couple of new services. The first offering will be GAP Fittings. GAP Fittings is a personalized service for you to learn the distance of your clubs in your bag. We will have you hit 5 shots with each club throughout your bag. At the end of the session, you should be left with an average carry distance for every club in your golf bag. This is your golden ticket to lower scores. Write these down on a card or make a note on your phone so you can quickly access them when playing golf. Secondly, we will be offering the opportunity to rent a launch monitor for you to use during your own personal practice sessions. We will show you all you need to do to get started, and off you go to having all of your club data for each of your practice sessions. If you are still having problems correcting your fault/flaw, contact a member of the professional staff for a lesson to get you back on track. Thank you for your continued support of the Golf Operations. It is an honor to be your Director of Golf. We look forward to seeing you at the club, on the course, in the fitness center, at the pool, on the court, or just hanging out with us here in the golf shop!

Significant updates to the WHS include: · Inclusion of Shorter-Length Golf Courses Within the Course Rating System: The overall length requirements for Course Rating in the WHS will be significantly reduced. A set of tees on an 18-hole course may be as short as 1,500 yards [1,370 meters] to be eligible for a Course Rating and Slope Rating®, and a set of tees on a 9-hole course may be as short as 750 yards [685 meters]. This change is intended to expand the WHS to thousands of shorter length courses, including par-3 courses, and enable more golfers to obtain and use a Handicap Index. · Use of an Expected Score for a Hole Not Played: Improvements have been made to the method used to handle holes not played, which will now be based on a player’s expected score rather than a score of net par. This new method will produce a 9-hole or 18-hole Score Differential that more accurately reflects a player’s ability. As golfers across the world are playing more 9-hole rounds, an expected score can also be used to convert a 9-hole round into an 18-hole Score Differential. For some countries, this means that 9-hole scores will be considered in the calculation of a player’s Handicap Index immediately after the day of play, rather than waiting to combine with another 9-hole score. · Playing Conditions Calculation Adjustments Made More Frequent: The Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) has been modified to increase the likelihood of an adjustment for abnormal playing conditions. National associations were given discretion, beginning in July 2022, to introduce this revision within their computation platforms, which will be complete by April 1, 2024. · Enhanced Guidance on Conducting a Handicap Review: The role of the Handicap Committee is vital to the success of the WHS and the Rules recommend that a Handicap Review is conducted regularly, or at least once a year to ensure a Handicap Index® remains reflective of a player’s ability. New reporting tools have been developed that national associations can incorporate into their handicapping software to assist Committees in conducting the review process effectively and consistently. To learn more about these new World Handicap System changes, please visit www.WHS.com.

Thank you, Eric Ferguson Director of Golf

During the season, you can participate in moderate workouts that keep your body agile and in good condition to play at your best. These workouts should occur three to four times per week. One of the reasons why intensity decreases during the season is to prevent injuries during workouts. An injury during a workout can be just as devastating as one that occurs on the course. All of the following exercises can be completed at different intensities depending on the season you're in.

7. Posture Training Great posture is essential for golfers. Since golf is such a technical sport, it's important that your posture is consistently in check. Otherwise, your swing could be affected. One great way to develop better posture is to practice yoga. For example, you could try doing a child's pose, forward fold, and a cat-cow. These are all yoga positions that can be done individually or as part of a yoga routine. 8. Cool-Down Lastly, every workout needs a cool-down period. A cool-down period gives your body a chance to regulate back to normal so that you can return to routine activities with ease. This will also prevent lightheadedness and feeling dizzy after a workout. To cool down, take a walk for about 5 minutes. Then, stretch your arms, legs, and any other muscle groups you focused on during your workout.

Explore the following golf workouts to take your game to the next level: 1. Warm-Up Warming up before a workout deserves its own place in a golf workout routine. Warming up is extremely important for preventing injuries and preparing the body for further exertion. Warming up will help to loosen your muscles, get your blood flowing, and mentally prepare you for a more strenuous workout. Begin each workout by first walking. Then, complete a stretching routine. When you feel less tense and more flexible, then begin your main workout routine. 2. Stretching To be great at golf, you need to have a great swing. To have a great swing, your body must also be flexible enough to allow for twisting and extended movements. To ensure that you’re course-ready, you'll need to participate in stretching workouts. Aim to pay special attention to stretching your shoulders, arms, hips, and quads.

Golf Workouts: Consider a Trainer Participating in golf workouts is a great way to stay in shape year-round. It's also a good time to hone in on your technical golf skills as a golf workout. To ensure that you're getting the best workout, consider speaking with our Director of Fitness Sherri Tallent. Sherri will teach you the best techniques to use when completing golf workouts. She will also be able to observe your technique in real-time and make adjustments. This can prevent injuries from occurring as a result of these workouts. If you do injure yourself during a golf workout, seek medical attention. You should also rest while your injury occurs. Not resting for an adequate amount of time could cause you to re-injure yourself, resulting in more downtime. For more information, fitness@sedgefieldcc.com.

3. Circuit Training Circuit training offers golfers a combination of strength, endurance, and cardio exercise. Circuit training involves doing one exercise for a period of time, then moving on to a different exercise right after. This process is repeated without taking a rest until the circuit training is complete. 4. Strength Training To drive the ball well, you need to have strength. Strength also helps to maintain your posture, allowing you to have more control over your movements and technique. Aim to do weights that you can do 8 to 10 reps with for 3 to 5 sets. This includes arms, legs, and back muscle groups. 5. Core Workout Core strength is particularly important for golfers. Core strength helps golfers to remain steady and in control of their swing. Your core includes your stomach, back, and sides. Try doing a plank for 30 seconds to one minute. You can also do butterfly sit-ups, side bends, and wheelbarrows. 6. Cardio Exercise Cardio exercise can help you improve your endurance. Even though golf carts are commonly used on the course, it's important to have ample lung capacity when playing golf. Cardio, along with a proper diet, can also help you maintain an ideal weight. Try jogging on the treadmill or outside, bicycling, or jumping rope.

I wanted to pass on a huge congratulations to Leah Edwards and her family. Leah has verbally agreed to take her talents and play golf at Western Kentucky University. I know she is super excited to have a plan for the next stage of her golf career, and I’m positive her parents are even more excited to see all the hard work Leah has devoted to the game pay off. As Leah’s dad said to me, “[this is a] small but big step in the journey for Leah.” We are super proud of her journey as well. I am so happy the Edwards chose the Cardinal for their home and excited to follow Leah on this journey. The Cardinal just turned into huge Hilltoppers fans, for sure! Thank you again for allowing our team to be part of your team. We are fortunate to be here at the Cardinal and can’t wait to see what 2024 has in store for all of us in the coming months.

Stay warm, keep swinging, and get ready for a full year of fun at the Cardinal. Chris Terry Director of Golf The Cardinal by Pete Dye
