CLUB UPDATE

Celebrating Our History, Enjoying Today, and Building for the Future: Lots to be Grateful for at Sedgefield Country Club

Here in North Carolina, late summer and early fall weather patterns are always unpredictable thanks to hurricane season. Last year, much of our state - especially western North Carolina - was devastated by Hurricane Helene. This year, we’ve been treated to remarkably calm and refreshing weather, creating perfect conditions for golf, tennis, and fun evenings out on the patio at the Greenside Café. There is nothing like getting out of the house and enjoying these cool, crisp early fall days.

In September, we hosted our Fall Member-Guest Tournament, and if you missed it, the theme for the tournament was Dazed and Confused And while the tournament wrapped up weeks ago, I’m still quoting Wooderson’s classic, “Alright, alright, alright” on a near-daily basis Director of Golf Eric Ferguson and our Golf crew did an amazing job putting this tournament together, and our Food and Beverage team did a fantastic job planning and orchestrating all of the tournament’s associated festivities throughout the weekend. Chad Cromer and the Agronomy team did a tremendous job preparing the course for the weekend as well. A heartfelt thank-you to all our members (and their guests) that participated in the tournament.

As we look ahead to 2026, Sedgefield Country Club will celebrate its 100th anniversary Throughout the year, we’ll host a variety of events honoring the Club’s remarkable history and the legacy our members have created over the past century. Our team is eager to begin this centennial celebration and kick off the festivities during the upcoming holiday season. We hope that all of our members will come out, share some good cheer, and help us close another extraordinary year at the Club.

While we celebrate the last century, we must look ahead, because we are the ones responsible for laying the foundation for the next 100 years. As Warren Buffett once said, “Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago ” While we enjoy the shade past members have provided, let’s be sure we’re planting seeds for those who will one day join us

Thank you for your continued commitment to Sedgefield Cheers to a healthy, joyful and rewarding new year!

See you out there, Wes Rowe l

SUPERINTENDENT’S CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

I hope everyone has been enjoying these beautiful fall days and the stretch of dry weather we’ve experienced over the past couple of months As we move into the winter season and begin to see colder mornings, please remember that frost delays will be enforced when necessary to protect the health of the turf On those chilly mornings, be sure to check with the golf shop for updates regarding any potential delays

This time of year also brings what we refer to as “leaf season.” Our main focus will be keeping the course as clean as possible from leaves using large blowers and vacuums. Some days are easier than others depending on wind conditions, so please be patient and understanding if the course isn’t quite as pristine as usual.

As temperatures continue to drop, the turf on our greens will soon stop actively growing and recovering. Because of this, we will begin using white plastic inserts inside the cups instead of the traditional white paint. These inserts help protect the cup edges from damage, and on days when play is light, we may use the same hole locations for consecutive days. This approach helps reduce the number of old cup marks while the turf is dormant and unable to heal. Once growth resumes in the spring, we’ll switch back to painted cups as usual.

This remains a great time of year to enjoy the course and take advantage of the mild weather before the colder months arrive. Get out, have some fun, and I hope to see you on the course soon!

I hope you have been able to come out and enjoy the course this fall We have had beautiful weather this fall allowing us to provide good playing conditions I am hoping that this great weather continues into the winter as we have a few projects I am looking forward to getting started on once the daily leaf cleanup starts to slow down.

One of the first things we will begin to work on is adding sand to some of the bunkers that need it, as well as repairing the liner where needed. While bunkers are hazards they still require lots of maintenance. As I am sure you remember, we had lots of rain at the beginning of the year and into the summer. All that rain caused lots of washouts and has exposed the bunker liner in a lot of bunkers. We will also continue to remove a few trees around the course to improve the growing environment in a few areas.

As we look forward to the coming months, one thing we will focus on is keeping the course as clean as possible on a daily basis Leaves are already starting to fall at a very fast pace, which we are able to clean up quickly when it’s dry However, when we go through wet stretches, it can be difficult to get our equipment onto the course for daily leaf removal Please be patient with us as we will be working hard every day to keep the course clean, but also minimize any damage to the turf from our equipment.

I am looking forward to starting these projects this winter and setting us up for an even better 2026 golf season. Hopefully there are many warm sunny days this winter for us to get lots of work done and for you to be able to come out and enjoy the club.

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

We wish each and every one of you the best as 2025 comes to a close. See you in 2026!

Thank You, Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf

Frost Delays – What Every Golfer Should Know

How often your morning is affected by frost delays depends not just on the weather, but a variety of factors. Here’s what every golfer should know about frost:

Crunchy grass is vulnerable to damage

Golf course turf is normally resilient to traffic, but when ice crystals form inside the plants, they become brittle Walking or driving over frost-covered grass can rupture plant cells, leading to dead turf, or the plants may be weakened without immediately showing the effects It can take grass more than a month to recover from this damage

Location is everything

You look out the kitchen window and see no signs of frost, only to find a frost delay when you get to the course. Know that frost can linger in colder microclimates long after other areas have thawed. North-facing slopes, low-lying areas and areas sheltered from the wind are especially likely to remain covered with frost. When in doubt, call the golf shop to check on course conditions before leaving home.

Closely mown turf is at high risk

Frost damage can occur throughout the course, but it poses the greatest risk to closely mown turf Putting greens are particularly vulnerable because they experience the most concentrated traffic A foursome typically takes 300 steps or more per green; with frost present, each step could cause serious damage

Looks can be deceiving

No signs of frost on the first tee doesn’t mean an immediate “all clear” sign. If frost remains in unavoidable early in the round, the course must remain closed. Also remember that once the frost is totally clear, the maintenance staff will still need time to catch up on course preparation before play can begin.

More light goes a long way

Shade extends frost delays by preventing sunlight from melting the frost Pruning or removing trees that shade primary playing surfaces can improve the course’s overall health and reduce the duration of frost delays This is especially true on the first few holes, where the shade from a handful of trees can keep an entire course closed

TEE IT UP AT SEDGEFIELD

Temperature and Golf Balls

When a golf ball flies through colder air, it loses distance because cold air is more dense than warm air Colder air increases both the lift and drag forces acting on the ball, which results in a slightly higher and shorter trajectory

Distance loss can also result from playing with cold golf balls If a ball gets too cold, its materials can lose some resiliency, resulting in a reduction of initial velocity off the club face Keep in mind, excessive heat can also have an effect

To negate this effect, we recommend playing with room temperature golf balls, and storing your golf balls indoors at room temperature throughout the year. Avoid leaving your golf balls in extremely cold or hot conditions, i.e., in the trunk of your car during the winter or summer. If your golf balls are exposed to these conditions, just let them return to a normal temperature gradually and they will perform the same.

If you’re playing in extremely cold conditions, it’s also a good idea to rotate a couple golf balls hole-by-hole, keeping the idle one in a warm pocket in your jacket or pants

The exact amount of distance loss due to cold temperatures is difficult to state due to a large number of variables However, the other factors that typically accompany cold-weather golf (i e cold muscles, wearing more layers, frozen ground, wind, etc ) might have a bigger impact on a golfer’s overall performance For the air temperature effect alone, figure on a distance loss of about 1 5% per 20°F reduction in temperature For example, for a 50°day versus a 70°day, on a 200 yard shot you would lose about 3 yards

It's also a common misconception that you should switch to a lower compression golf ball in colder conditions. This practice is meant to compensate for the increase in compression that occurs when a ball gets colder. If you play with balls that are at near room temperature as we suggest, this becomes a moot point. Furthermore, modern golf ball models are not sold in a choice of compressions like they were in the wound ball days, so changing compression would necessitate changing to a different model, which may have playing characteristics that are different from what you are used to.

And remember, if you change your golf ball, you change every shot in your bag

Where Your Doubles Come From

The table above is a breakdown of how often players make double (or worse) when they commit one of the 5 mistakes, as well as the percent of their doubles where this mistake occurs.

The headline: As handicap rises, every mistake is more likely to become a double (or worse)

Play it smarter

Tee shots: Optimize for in-play, not “fairway ” Pick targets well away from penalties Big numbers start with reloads

Approaches: When there are penalty strokes in play on the approach shot, you need to be very conservative with your target

Short Game: Goal #1 is guaranteeing your next shot is a putt Eliminate those double chips

Putting: Spend time practicing speed control and do not neglect dialing in the speed of the greens before the round.

If you only remember three things

1.Avoid penalties. They’re the fastest path to doubles at every level.

2.Kill the re-chip. Sometimes a careful, boring short-game choice will save strokes.

3.Lag like it matters. Three-putts are a growing share of doubles as handicap climbs.

Bottom line: You don’t need more birdies... you need fewer disasters.

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Coming to an end of another year

Well what can I say, this year celebrating 50 years of the Cardinal has been an absolute blast We have seen the membership grow by 60 families throughout the year With these families, we’ve seen a new crop of juniors out playing and practicing on the driving range The other day I noticed more juniors on the range than adults, for the first time in years The Cardinal is growing and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of its rebirth over the last few years Thank you to all our raving fans and we look to continue our momentum into the future

The last 2 months have been a bit of a blur around the club In September we welcome 60 ladies to the club to play in our Lady Bird Invitational. Not only did we see a huge turnout from our own ladies, we saw ladies from 7 different clubs around the state join us for two days of fun. Players enjoyed a night on the range competing in a Drive, Chip and Putt contest. They also enjoyed a few beverages along with a wonderful meal put together by our culinary team. The tournament got underway on the 2nd day with the weather holding out until the very end. After all said and done, teams from the Cardinal were the big winners. We’d like to thank everyone who came out to play.

Twenty-twenty five also saw the return of the Presidents Cup match play tournament. This was the perfect year to bring this event back to the calendar and what an event it was. Twenty-two 2 man teams competed in Four-Ball match play throughout the summer. With an exciting Final four weekend bringing an end to the event we saw a wonderful hard fought match between Scotty Trogdon/Brandon Dembowiak and Ryan Wilson/Chris Cassetta On the 17th hole Mr Trogdon made a putt to secure the win for his team Would like to congratulate the team of Scotty Trogdon and Brandon Dembowiak as we recognize them as the 2025 Presidents Cup Champions

We also saw the end of our Men’s League season in September With 20 weeks of competition and a grueling 9 hole shootout, Johnny Rollins secured the belt and was crowned the 2025 Men’s League Champion The last couple weeks have been a tremendous time for Mr Rollins, not only did he win the Men’s League title, he and his wife welcomed their first child to the family as well We are told everyone is doing just fine Congratulations

As we approach the cooler season around our area, it’s that time of year where we need to think about frost delays, afternoon shotgun starts, and driving range use For those new to the club, it is our practice to not play and/or walk on greens with frost on them This means we will occasionally have the need to delay play a bit in the mornings Best way to be advised of this is to turn on notifications within the McConnell Golf app These are sent much quicker than the morning email If and when the temperatures fall into the freezing range overnight, the greens will actually freeze It is also our practice to not play on frozen greens, so we need to close the course entirely if the temperatures throughout the day will not thaw out the surfaces, or we will conduct an afternoon shot to include as many people as possible This would be the case more on the weekend than on a weekday due to the amount of activity on the tee sheet. Our team will be watching the weather during the day to decide whether a shotgun start is necessary. We will do our best to make this decision mid-week so everyone can plan. It is and will always be our goal to get as many members on the course as soon as possible each day. Lastly, with all the range use we see on the driving range, we will utilize the mat an extra day for the next few months. We will be on the mats Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, leaving Friday through Sunday on the grass as weather permits. Please do your best to not take divots with practice swings and take a look at the divot sign on the range to better use the grass Just fyi, once the grass is gone there is nothing Ross can do to grow it back when its gone and temperatures are low

Fall is here and we are already experiencing cooler weather and shorter days It can be harder to maintain a fitness routine as the weather changes Here are a few tips on staying active during the fall and winter months

Enjoy the weather Cooler weather is a great time to exercise outdoors Activities like walking, hiking and jogging can be enjoyed outdoors while enjoying the beautiful fall colors.

Stay active indoors. People often become more sedentary during the cooler months. Try walking in place or walking on a treadmill at the fitness center when watching TV. When a commercial comes on, do push-ups or stretches to keep moving.

Make a plan. Schedule your workouts and stick to it!

“The best type of exercise is the one you’ll do most often”

Fall Activities to Keep Kids Moving

While the weather may limit kid’s activities, introducing them to fallthemed activities can help motivate kids to stay active and enjoy the outdoors longer.

Raking (and Jumping in) Leaves | Encourage children to lend a helping hand by raking leaves. Working as a family to rake move leaves will create great family bonding time.

Hiking | Utilize your state and local park to find a safe hiking or trail locations.

Nature Scavenger Hunt | Create a scavenger hunt for your kids to complete Add a time element to help increase physical activity

Searching for leaves , acorns, sticks, and other objects will help kids keep a fun goal in mind focusing on physical activity

“Burn Off the Feast”

How much exercise to burn off Thanksgiving dinner? It could take longer than you might think Walking off a 3,000-calorie feast takes about nine hours for a 180-pound adult Jogging off one takes about five hours So, altogether, an average Thanksgiving meal with all of the most popular dishes contains roughly 3,408 calories and requires 76,397 steps to burn off

Pre -Thanksgiving Workout

Burn Calories with Gratitude in Your Heart. The great thing about a pre-Thanksgiving workout is that you can tailor it to your fitness level and available time. If you are pressed for time, a quick 20minute workout can still make a big difference.

Warm - Up | 5 minutes of light cardio like marching or jogging in place.

Bodyweight Exercises | 3 sets of 10 repetitions each of squats, lunges, push-ups (modified if needed, and rows (using a chair or bench)

Cool - Down | 5 minutes of static stretches

Winter conditioning for both golf and tennis should focus on improving strength, flexibility, and endurance through a mix of cardio, strength training, and sport-specific drills Key exercises include core work, lower body strength, and rotational movements While maintaining tennis skills requires court time or drills, indoor golf can be done with weighted clubs or simulators Personal trainers are available for designing sport-specific programs For more information contact Sherri - fitness@sedgefieldcc com

I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center

One of a Kind: Kenny Carter’s 30-Year Journey at Sedgefield

As Sedgefield is celebrating its 100th anniversary, it’s the perfect time to recognize those team members who have been with us for many of those years One of Sedgefield Country Club’s most tenured and respected team members is Mr Kenny Carter

Kenny has been with the club since the early 1990s, contributing in countless ways over the decades. He has supported valet services and our facilities team, and he’s always ready to lend a hand. If you have had the opportunity to meet Kenny, you know within just a few minutes how much he loves Sedgefield.

Kenny credits his success to the many club members and fellow team members who have made coming to work so enjoyable over the years

“I would do anything I can for the people at this club I take a lot of pride in what I do around here. This is a special place.”

That pride and dedication have earned Kenny the Employee of the Year Award an incredible seven times.

Will Harper, McConnell Golf’s Corporate Director of Facilities, shared:

“Kenny lives and breathes Sedgefield All of the effort he puts into his work genuinely is for the betterment of the Club I love and respect Kenny and really enjoy working with him.”

Kenny’s impact extends beyond just his own contributions; he’s even brought his family into the fold. While Kenny’s daughter and son both worked at the Club many years ago, earlier this year, Kenny convinced his older brother, Rex Carter, to join our team Rex supports our club as a member of the cart staff

As the older brother, Rex says that he has always been the one to “coach up” his younger brother But when it comes to working at Sedgefield, Rex admits he’s taking lots of notes from Kenny

“He has been a fixture here at Sedgefield for so long Little brother he’s one of a kind I have tried to learn as much as I can from him here ”

Clearly, Kenny has taught Rex what it takes to thrive here at the Club Rex recently won the October Employee of the Month Award. When he told Kenny the good news, Kenny shared some brotherly encouragement:

“Good for you, but you’ve got a long way to go to catch my record ”

We could easily fill this entire newsletter with stories of Kenny’s time at Sedgefield In my short time here, he’s already left an indelible mark on me. I met Kenny during my first week (Wyndham Week) while he was shuttling team members from the clubhouse to the employee parking lot In just those few short minutes on the cart with Kenny, I saw what makes him so special: he listens, he cares, and he genuinely wants to make your day better That, folks, is real hospitality, and you can’t teach that
