The warm summer temperatures have arrived, and our Bermudagrass turf is thriving! Aerification went very smoothly this spring, and everything has healed up nicely. With the turf now growing aggressively, we've begun implementing our summer cultural practices to ensure the best possible playing conditions
Each Monday while the course is closed, we’ll be lightly vertigrooming the greens, followed by a light topdressing of fine sand This process helps minimize grain, improves ball roll, and enhances the firmness of the putting surfaces. During this time of year, we’ll also be lightly topdressing tees and fairway landing zones to dilute thatch and create smoother, firmer playing surfaces.
Summer also means the Wyndham Championship is just around the corner Tournament build-out will already be underway by the time you read this. As in years past, the same trusted contractor will be handling the setup They’ve consistently done a great job being respectful of your golf experience while performing their work. That said, if you ever notice any issues during your round, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly I’ll be happy to connect with the lead foreman and address any concerns
I hope to see many of you out on the course enjoying the summer weather and great conditions!
Chad Cromer Golf Course Superintendent
We have had a very busy spring here at the Cardinal. As you all know we had a lot of winter damage to repair this spring and will continue to work on sodding more areas throughout the summer. Thankfully this year McConnell golf allowed us to hire a construction company to help repair some of the larger areas around the course It is going to take some time for all of the sodded areas to grow together and thicken up. I have already fertilized all of the sodded areas to help it grow in. I have also ordered some additional fertilizer for some of the weaker areas to help them recover and grow in.
The agronomy team has just finished up our closed week for course aerification The greens were aerified again and are recovering very quickly. Tees were core aerified, and this year we decided to slice the fairways. A slicer makes a deep slice into the ground with very little disturbance to the surface The slicer goes much deeper in to the ground then the solid tines we typically use on fairways This hopefully creates better channels for water to drain from the fairways This will also alleviate soil compaction and allow air and water into the soil to provide a better stand of turf.
As we are now into summer, we are in full maintenance mode We will continue to water and fertilize the newly sodded areas to improve the turf quality We will also continue with a few small sod projects around the course to improve the condition of the course. For the most part, our focus is on maintaining the course and providing great playing conditions daily I hope everyone has a great summer of golf, and I hope to see you on the course
Ross Jernigan Golf Course Superintendent
Summer is officially in full swing! The weather certainly has started to heat up and so has the buzz and excitement as we get ready for the Wyndham Championship. I would like to remind everyone that things around the club and golf course are very busy as crews are well underway with setting up for the Wyndham Championship Please keep in mind each week as we get closer, more and more workers will be on property and we ask you to please use caution in the parking lots Also, please be aware of children in the parking lots that might not be paying attention as they make their way to the pool area Most importantly I hope each of you are able to enjoy the July 4th Holiday with family and friends!
I look forward to seeing you at the club!
All the Best,
Eric Ferguson, PGA Director of Golf
With Summer in full swing, we would like to provide a few reminders to the members with personal carts. We kindly ask that you do not park your golf carts in a parking spot designed for vehicles and most importantly please do not park your carts in a handicap area (marked by white striped lines). There has also been a growing concern from the membership of kids (under the age of 16) driving golf carts. The club policy does not allow a kid without a driver’s license to operate a cart on club property. Please note the main concern is the safety of everyone on property and to prevent any major injuries that might occur from usage of a motorized vehicle.
McConnell Golf properties will require all golf carts to be returned from the golf course NO LATER than 8:00 PM. Members and Guests will still be able to rent a golf cart but must do so by 6:00 PM Members and guests may still play the golf course in the evenings but will be required to walk after 6:00 PM. This will provide a safer environment for our outside service staff and allow them to not be put in a dangerous situation as they complete their nightly duties. Members in violation will receive a letter and further action could result in suspension of golf privileges.
Under no circumstances are PERSONAL GOLF CARTS ALLOWED ON THE GOLF COURSE Members in violation will receive a letter and further action could result in a 30 day or longer suspension of golf course usage
If you are playing golf, you MUST check in with a member of the Professional Staff DO NOT go to the first tee without checking in If you do not check in, you will be charged an 18 Hole Cart Fee
We would like to also remind everyone of a few of our policies. Sedgefield Full Golf Members have unlimited access to the practice facilities during operational hours Guests may use these facilities when accompanied by a member on the day of play Guests are not allowed to use the practice facilities at any other time. Please note that proper attire is required (athletic clothing, along with denim are prohibited while playing or practicing. Shirttails must remain tucked in and all hat/caps must be worn facing forward)
Full Golf Members are allowed fifteen (15) visits to our sister owned properties with no more than three (3) plays at any one property during the calendar year per Membership for cart fee only. Any Member play over this maximum, unless allowed by Membership Classification, will pay the appropriate daily Accompanied Guest Fee in place at the property visited All starting times outside of Sedgefield and Cardinal must be arranged by the Sedgefield Golf Professional Staff
For Members who are bringing Guest(s) to Sedgefield Country Club or any other McConnell Golf Property, each -same- Guest(s) is allowed ten (10) plays combined across ALL MCG owned properties, with no more than six (6) plays at any one property during the calendar year. Tournament play does not count toward guest round limit
It is hard to believe we are 4 weeks away from the 2025 Wyndham Championship As a reminder, here are the changes in guest rates, course, and practice facility schedules The Wyndham Guest Rate of $175 per person will remain in place through Sunday, August 17th and applies to all guest types except family guests ($100). When arranging weekend starting times, please keep in mind, guest(s) including family guests are prohibited from playing prior to 1pm The final week before the golf course closes (July 15th20th) will be restricted to Sedgefield Members and their invited guests only These guests can still be from a McConnell Property but would have to be invited to play with a Sedgefield Member. The final two days (July 19th and 20th) will be restricted to Sedgefield Members and FAMILY GUESTS ONLY No other guest play will be allowed to play on these final two days

Ever wondered if your morning cup of coffee could actually improve your golf game?
(by Lou Stagner)
Some scientists wondered the same thing
In a peer-reviewed study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Petey W Mumford and colleagues tested the effects of caffeine on golf performance and fatigue. Here’s what the researchers found, and how it might change your approach before teeing off.
This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled study.
Participants: Single digit male golfers
Format: Simulated tournament (36 holes, walking, stroke play, $1000 prize pool to help ensure a competitive event)
Intervention: Caffeine group vs placebo group
Dose: 1.9 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight, taken twice (once before the round, once at the turn)
This put total intake at approximately 3 8 mg/kg, split into two smaller doses for more stable energy throughout the round (3 8 mg/kg is about two or three eight-ounce cups of coffee for the typical person)
Researchers measured:
-Score
-Driving distance
-Greens in regulation
-Perceived fatigue and energy levels
1 Performance improved
Golfers who took caffeine had significantly better scores, longer drives, and hit more greens in regulation compared to the placebo group.
2 No downside to accuracy/control
3 Caffeine reduced fatigue
Players in the caffeine reported lower levels of physical and mental fatigue and higher feelings of energy during the round.
1. Caffeine may help you play better not just feel better.
2. Try it during practice rounds first.
Caffeine affects people differently Use a similar dose (1 5 to 2 mg/kg) before a non-competitive round and evaluate your tempo, focus, and feel
3. Consider splitting your dose.
The study gave half before the round and half at the turn. That steady approach may help reduce crashes or lateround jitters
4. It’s not just about distance.
The mental edge matters. Caffeine may help with focus, alertness, and sustained performance deep into the round..
The summer heat is finally upon us, however the Cardinal Golf Season has been sizzling since the first ball was hit on opening day. With our 50th anniversary golf season underway, we continue to create new memories and golf history around the club. This year we resurrected The President’s Cup Match Play and honored one of our very own by naming the Men’s Member/Member after Gil Happel. We have continued a new tradition with Wednesday Night’s Men’s League and in the spirit of competition brought in one of the greatest amateur championships in North Carolina history to the club. The Cardinal is known for great golf and this year has not disappointed thus far.
Chris Terry Director of Golf
The Cardinal by Pete Dye
The Happel, Men’s Member/Member, proved to be one for the books. With a new format, the field was challenged at every turn After 3 days of competition and a test of will to get through each format, 7 teams made it to the final challenge A three hole shootout competition awaited our finalists On the final hole, the teams of David Song/Dalton Little and Craig Prothero/Tim Hansen played to an incredible finish Song/Little hit their second shot to less than a foot, and needing to hole out from the fairway to force a tie the team of Prothero/Hansen lipped out their third shot from the fairway resulting in an easy tap in for our 2025 Happel Champions, David Song and Dalton Little. Was a fantastic finish to a great weekend and we thank everyone who helped make it such a special event here at the club.
The Carolinas Golf Association came knocking last year looking for the best course to host the North Carolina Amateur, and the Cardinal did not disappoint. Everyone knows the Cardinal is a tough place to play, tight fairways, difficult up and downs, and with greens rolling like Augusta the competition was in for a real test. After 72 holes, only one man stood at the top of the leaderboard. With a score of 9 under par, Jackson Spires took home the 65 year trophy and added his name to the long with of players tested by the Pete Dye design here at the Cardinal With the win, Jackson has received an automatic bid into the US Amateur Championship We wish Jackson the best of luck in our nation’s amateur championship
As we move towards to 2nd half of the golf season, we still have numerous opportunities to put your name on the list of players who have tamed the Cardinal for at least a round or two. Keep these events in mind as your plan our your upcoming summer/fall schedule.
Parent/Child – July 13
· The Borjes – August 9th (2-Man Gross 1Day Event with shootout)
· The Dye Cup – Men’s Member/Guest
· The Lady Bird Invitational – September 24th and 25th
· Cardinal Club Championship Weekend – October 17-19 (New dates)
I’d like to take a minute and congratulate two ladies for their accomplishments First, Julie Streng has qualified for the US Senior Women’s Open Championship in San Diego, CA This will mark her 2nd time making the field in this wonderful championship Julie competed in the regional qualifier and finished as the low amateur Way to go Mrs. Streng. The second young lady I would like to acknowledge is our very own Leah Edwards. Leah has grown up here at The Cardinal and her dedication to the game is only overshadowed by the wonderful human being she is. Leah has risen through the ranks of amateur golf to secure herself a scholarship to play golf at Western Kentucky University in the fall. It has been a pleasure to watch Leah grow and blossom not only as a player but as a person. To you Leah, thank you for being you, you will be missed.
The Cardinal is a special place. It’s not just a club, it’s a family Enjoy the summer
Massage therapy is a practice that's beneficial for many people throughout the year, but some may find particularly large value at specific times or seasons One great example is the current summer period we're in, where many people find that massage therapy is even more beneficial than usual.
At Sedgefield, Kat Greenfield offers a wide range of massage therapy techniques for patients from Swedish massage to sports massage, deep tissue massage and many other varieties. Here are some of the summerspecific benefits of massage therapy, plus what to think about if you're just researching your massage options for the first time this summer.
For those who have been keeping up with their yard work this summer, massage therapy can be a great way to manage the stiffness and fatigue that can come along with it A deep tissue massage is one of the best ways to target those areas of your body that need extra attention after a long day of sweaty work in the sun
If you're out enjoying all the summer activities , you can be at risk of heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion is a condition caused by overexertion in hot temperatures and can lead to serious health issues if left untreated Massage therapy can be an effective way to reduce symptoms of heat exhaustion, such as lightheadedness, muscle cramps, and fatigue By targeting the affected areas of your body, massage therapy can help reduce inflammation and increase circulation, allowing your body to cool down and recover more quickly from heat exhaustion.
Another summer-specific issue that many people experience is joint swelling due to the humidity If your joints are feeling extra tight and swollen, then a massage can help reduce inflammation and improve your range of motion The Swedish massage technique is perfect for targeting areas with joint swelling as it combines long flowing strokes with gentle stretching to help reduce swelling and increase circulation
Many people heavily increase their exercise frequency during the summer months, and as a result can experience some muscle aches and pains Massage therapy is an excellent way to manage this pain in order to keep your exercise routine going strong throughout the season
Massage therapy can also be a great way to carve out some "me time" this summer Taking the time to relax and reset with a massage is an excellent way to recharge your batteries and come back refreshed and ready for whatever life has in store!
