TURF TALK

An April drought brings May... Well I don’t know what an April drought brings, but I can tell you it was NOT soil moisture. The month of May must have felt bad and tried to make up for it. We definitely had May showers. With over 9 inches of rain in May, and over 7 inches of rain in June, you could say it has been a wet late spring/early summer. That rain is good for grass, but not always good for playing golf. It is most certainly challenging for golf course maintenance We have put a few hours on the bunker machine this year

Rain after aeration is a superintendent’s dream Maybe not 5 inches overnight, followed by another inch the next afternoon, but hey, who’s counting? Unrelated question, does anyone know where we can buy some pitch? Also, how long is a cubit?

If we can’t approach challenges with a little humor, and look back on them with a smile, life is going to be very tough indeed. Sincerely, we had a great week of aeration and the golf course will be better for it. In spite of some cool mornings and drizzly days, we managed to get all the short cut grass aerated including greens, tees, fairways, approaches, and greens collars As always, we appreciate the time you give us to complete the aeration process The greens are already healing up nicely and growing beautiful roots

The weather in May and June might have been frustrating at times, but it has helped us build a good base for the summer. If you can imagine the course as an art project, the grass is our medium and the mowers are our tools to mold and shape it. With the grass green and growing, we really have something to work with. As we cut grass, spray for weeds, trim, and edge, we can now shape the course into something more beautiful day by day

For those of you concerned about several of the trees on the property, please note they have been marked for removal with orange tape If they have been marked it is because they are in poor health, no longer living, or pose a concern for turf health, and/or safety of members, guests, and neighbors. Our tree service contractor has assured me we are next on his list. Much like cutting grass, the success and pace of tree removal is often weather dependent.

Now, how to train these squirrels, foxes, and turtles to line up in pairs

Until next time, I’ll see you on the course!

“August is a special month for me it’s not just my birthday, but my firstborn son Maverick’s too! He’s still too young to pick his favorite cake, but as for me, it’s been the same answer for as long as I can remember: cheesecake! It’s my absolute favorite.
