EDITOR’S NOTE

In 2020 never would I have thought I would have published a collaborative work with Wellness Magazine to provide readers an insight of how important skin is in our lives. I believe every person is unique and beautiful and deserves to have a sort of guide to take care of themselves. Since I was little I didn’t have much resources to know how to take care of myself. Therefore, creating this guide with Wellness Magazine made my childhood dreams come to a reality.
Sincerely,

LETS TALK
COLLEGE AND SKIN
ARE COLLEGE STUDENTS SKIN AFFECTED MORE?

College, the best experience for our education and our mental growth. Where we are meeting new people, having the best adventures, and making memories, but the most stressful days of our lives. Some have it better and some don’t, but when it comes to taking care of ourselves during these stressful days, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time. One of the parts of our bodies that struggles the most during our busy days is our skin. The skin is one of the most fundamental parts of the body and is the body’s largest organ. When it comes to taking care of it, as college students, it becomes a daily challenge to take care of it consistently.
As a college student, we are always on the grind and if not we are getting some extra hours of rest with no worries about our skin health. Managing classes and life takes most of that energy, but just dedicating a small fraction of time could save our skin from becoming poor. Stress, as mentioned, is one of the main factors that causes the skin to be badly affected. It is said that 45% of American students claimed to undergo “more than average stress,” while 33% of students reported “average stress.” When we feel stress, our sympathetic nervous system releases stress hormones into our bodies, like cortisol and adrenaline. Cortisol causes increases
Some Causes
of Poor Skin
1. Stress igit.
2. Lack of sleep ig
3. No nutrients
oil production into our skin glands which causes clogged pores and acne breakouts, but what can we do about this?
Taking time for oneself, doing the things you enjoy, drinking plenty of water, creating a simple skin care routine, and resting. Sleep is also an important role that plays into the health of the skin. Approximately, more than 70% of college students say they get less than eight hours of sleep a day. Without getting regular, quality sleep, the increase in fine lines, uneven pigmentation is much more noticeable and it losesv its elasticity, making it look much older. Lack of sleep weakens the skin’s capacity to repair and rejuvenate itself. A major component of the skin is collagen. Sleep deprivation, affects the production of collagen, resulting in a breakdown in the barrier function of the skin and mucous membranes. Not only sleep and stress play a big role into college students skin care, but also what is consumed into our bodies.
YOUR SKIN TREAT
FOOD

As busy as college students are, it is difficult to have a proper meal every single day, as a result they have easy access to unhealthy snacking, fast foods, but also high prices of healthy foods. Some reasons which college students face when trying to eat the right foods are being too busy, can’t afford it, not enough options, can’t cook, body image, mental health, and more. By having a diet high in sugar and processed foods can lead to inflammation, acne breakouts and premature aging of the skin and cause dryness.
Exercise greatly affects the appearance of the skin. But, don’t college students get enough exercise walking to their classes?
The answer is, while it is a good daily movement, it is yet not enough to have a healthy exercise lifestyle. Between managing stress, time, schoolwork and socialization, it is difficult for students to find the time to exercise. Sleeping and food habits contribute to not getting enough movement in the body. Exercising decreases the body’s hormonal and immune responses to stress. This minimizes the risk of chronic skin conditions and breakouts. Because of the increased blood flow when working out, the skin becomes glowy and healthier.

the mind.

Those who create a positive attitude towards themselves are more likely to be exceptional agers , creating a link between positivity and better skin. Positivity can also help you better deal with, and lower, stress levels. Howard Murad, MD, founder of Murad skincare, conducted a study in his L.A. practice with 40 female patients. He found that after
just four weeks of reading note cards with positive affirmations and journaling thoughts, the women scored lower blood pressure and stress levels and higher levels of skin hydration (a major factor in a youthful complexion).

NEED OF THE SUN
BENEFITS OF THE SUN FOR OUR MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH
We often hear all nthe damages of being exposed to too much sunlight, but rather than hearing its damages, lets hear how it is beneficial for our mental and physical health. When you give your skin access to a healthy dose of the sun’s rays, you are likely to experience some tangible benefits immediately. One of these benefits is the increasing of Vitamin D. Vitamin D has some important functions in the body. It promotes reduced inflammation and modulates cell growth. It’s also very hard to get enough from food sources alone. It also helps improve our moods. Researchers at BYU found more mental health distress in people during seasons with little sun exposure. Getting some sun increases your serotonin and helps you stave off Seasonal Affective Disorder

(SAD) and sun exposure can also help people with anxiety and depression, especially
in combination with other treatments. Aside from helping the overall mood, it also benefits in getting a higher quality sleep. That serotonin you soak up from the sun’s rays does more than boost your mood. This might also help you get more restful sleep at night. Exposure of sun also helps our bodies to have stronger bones. Having high Vitamin D gets you stronger bones and teeth. How much Vitamin D do you need? For adults, a daily intake of 4,000 international units (or IUs) is recommended. While calcium intake is also crucial for bone health, getting enough sun helps your body absorb the calcium. Lastly, it helps lower blood pressure. When sunlight hits your skin, your body releases something called nitric oxide into your blood. This compound brings down blood pressure and improves heart health. Maintaining healthy blood pressure can reduce your risks of cardiac disease and stroke.

THE STORY BENEATH YOUR SKIN
I want to show you some stories today that are going to explain how the connection between the mind and body interact and hopefully surprise you with some of the ideas that came about in understanding the connection between the brain and the skin. Our skin has machinery, the same machinery as the brain. And it’s only been a decade or so of research that shows that the skin has the most intricate and sophisticated systems that were once under the sole domain of the brain. So for instance, the stress axis — the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis — found in our central nervous system is also found in the skin, and it’s theorized that this stress pathway actually evolved in the skin first to avoid pathogens from entering the skin. so imagine how understanding these discoveries could change technology and medicine. Twenty years ago, Dr. Michael Gershon revealed that there was a brain in the gut. Today, if you go to a grocery store, it’s difficult to find a grocery store without probiotic drinks or probiotic supplements. And today, I’m telling you that the skin also has a mind of its own. Therefore I want to leave you with this, to listen to your skin.
