College, the best experience for our education and our mental growth. Where we are meeting new people, having the best adventures, and making memories, but the most stressful days of our lives. Some have it better and some don’t, but when it comes to taking care of ourselves during these stressful days, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time. One of the parts of our bodies that struggles the most during our busy days is our skin. The skin is one of the most fundamental parts of the body and is the body’s largest organ. When it comes to taking care of it, as college students, it becomes a daily challenge to take care of it consistently.

As a college student, we are always on the grind and if not we are getting some extra hours of rest with no worries about our skin health. Managing classes and life takes most of that energy, but just dedicating a small fraction of time could save our skin from becoming poor. Stress, as mentioned, is one of the main factors that causes the skin to be badly affected. It is said that 45% of American students claimed to undergo “more than average stress,” while 33% of students reported “average stress.” When we feel stress, our sympathetic nervous system releases stress hormones into our bodies, like cortisol and adrenaline. Taking time for oneself, doing the things you enjoy, drinking plenty of water, creating a simple skin care routine, and resting. Sleep is also an important role that plays into the health of the skin. Approximately, more than 70% of college students say they get less than eight hours of sleep a day. Without getting regular, quality sleep, the increase in fine lines, uneven pigmentation is much more noticeable and it losesv its elasticity, making it look much older. Lack of sleep weakens the skin’s capacity to repair and rejuvenate itself. A major component of the skin is collagen. Sleep deprivation, affects the production of collagen, resulting in a breakdown in the barrier function of the skin and mucous membranes. Not only sleep and stress play a big role into college students skin care, but also what is consumed into our bodies.
