OCTOBER 2021

MAZENOD OLD COLLEGIANS' ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER

Dear Old Boys, There used to be an American television sitcom that regaled our television screens called, “Welcome Back, Kotter”. Well, with our new “Roadmap” that began last Friday, MOCA has relaunched our e-News as a means of reaching out to our Old Boys. In recent weeks, we reformed a new MOCA Committee that will steer us out of our lockdown into 2022. At the end of 2022, we will hold an annual General meeting to which you will be invited. Due to his work commitments, Nick Lew Ton has resigned from the position of the MOCA President. We sincerely thank Nick for all of his efforts, commitment and hard work with MOCA! Nick’s contributions to MOCA are appreciated greatly. In light of Nick’s resignation, our new MOCA Committee consists of:

Sean Sullivan (President) Phil Ryan (Vice President) David Wilton (Secretary) Sam Riley (Treasurer) Ben Riley (Vice Treasurer) Tina Giacco (Ex-Officio) Once again, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Nick Lew Ton for his enthusiasm and hard work with MOCA! Nick will continue to support our MOCA events and activities. OUR NEWEST COHORT OF MOCA LIFE MEMBERS Last Friday, 15th October, we welcomed our latest MOCA Life Members. These men came from our Graduating Class of 2021. Our young men were presented with a MOCA key ring each; they were reminded that they would always be a vital part of our Mazenod Community. One of our Head Prefects from 2021, Ryan Dean, was presented with the MOCA Fostering the Future Award. Ryan has been an exemplary leader in our College. His integrity and authentic leadership have been outstanding! Congratulations, Ryan! On this same day, MOCA presented Fr Kevin Davine OMI with an Honorary Life Membership to MOCA. As always, Fr Kevin was extremely humble and gracious in accepting his award. We had recorded an interview with Fr Kevin several days prior to our Valedictory Assembly, and this will be uploaded to our MOCA Website. Congratulations, Fr Kevin!

STEVEN TYNAN MEMORIAL PRESENTATION On Friday, 8th October, we commemorated our annual Steven Tynan Memorial Presentation. Unfortunately, due to restrictions concerning the current Covid-19 Pandemic, we were unable to hold these restrictions with a live Assembly. Therefore, we pre-recorded our Presentation. During our Assembly, we remembered and prayed for the Souls of our Old Boy, Constable Steven Tynan and his partner, Constable Damian Eyre, who tragically died as they strove to keep our community safe. On 12 October 1988, Constables Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre had responded to the report of an abandoned car in Walsh Street, South Yarra. We gave thanks to God for the gift of all of our Emergency Service Workers, as they strive to keep all of us safe. I wish to thank our “volunteers” who so graciously and immediately said “yes” to my request to commemorate the lives of Steven Tynan and Damian Eyre, and to all of our Emergency Service workers who have given their lives in order that we may all be safe. We acknowledge with gratitude all members of our Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police and Emergency Service workers who so generously look after our wellbeing. Many thanks to our “volunteers”: Our Rector, Fr Harry Dyer OMI, Our Head Prefect, Ryan Dean, and his Parents, Greg and Natalie Dean; and our Old Boys, Gerard Curtis, James Munro and Sean Schimizzi. Greg and Natalie Dean, as well as, Sean Schimizzi provided us with wonderful insights into their work with the Victoria Police. Gerard Curtis provided us with his vantage point from the perspective of a Fire Officer, and James Munro alerted us in the significant life experiences he encounters in his work as a Paramedic. I know that I speak on behalf of the entire College Community when I state that my Year 12 students were completely engaged in listening to these presentations. Moreover, Ryan Dean interviewed his father, Greg Dean about dealing with stress, coping mechanisms and resilience. Greg gave us some outstanding tips with dealing with these vital issues.

MILLIONAIRE HOT SEAT How awesome to see that one of our Old Boys, Chris Camerota, (2005) was on Millionaire Hot Seat recently! I was delighted to receive a text message from his Mum informing me that my former Year 12 English student was on Channel 9! It is always a great joy for us to receive wonderful happy news! OLD BOYS’ REQUIEM MASS November is traditionally the month where we commemorate the Holy Souls. Sadly, our traditional Requiem Mass where we pray for the Souls of our Old Boys who have died will not be celebrated “in person” this year. Due to the current restrictions, we will email a link to the families of our deceased Old Boys, and this link will also be sent to all of you, our Old Boys. Our Requiem Mass is scheduled to be held on Friday, 5th November, 2021. Since our last Requiem Mass in November, 2020, seven Old Boys have entered Eternal life. May Jesus grant all our Old Boys, Staff, Oblates and loved ones who have died His Eternal peace and joy. May Jesus comfort and strengthen their loved ones. MY SINCEREST THANKS TO OUR OLD BOYS, JOSEPH AMBROSE AND ASTON VAZ FROM THE CLASS OF 2019 Many thanks to Joey and to Ashton for their exceptional music talents and beautiful voices as they provided us with inspirational and uplifting music for our Valedictory Mass this year. Their lovely singing and music will also be part of the Liturgy for our Requiem Mass for our Deceased Old Boys on the 5th November, this year. Joey and Ashton, Thanks very much! Gorgeous music and singing!
