Philanthropy & Community Impact

Built on connection:

The

new era of Mazenod College

The past year has shown the strength and generosity of our community. Philanthropy continues to play a vital role in shaping the life of Mazenod College, supporting our students, improving our facilities and strengthening the relationships that sustain our mission.

This report brings together the work of the Foundation, the 1967 Bequest Society and our Alumni community across 2025. It highlights the programs that have grown, the projects that have advanced and the contributions that have made a clear difference to the learning environment. It also reflects the care and commitment shown by donors, volunteers, Old Collegians and families who believe in the future of our College.

As we look towards 2026, we do so with gratitude for what has been achieved and with a renewed focus on providing opportunities for young men to learn, lead and serve with purpose. Thank you to every member of our community whose support has guided this work.

“As an Old Collegian (Class of 1987) it’s been fantastic to see Mazenod College thrive, not only as a school but as a connection point to the community. My hope is that all past students can reflect on their time at Mazenod and choose to make a contribution, monetary or otherwise, for the generations that succeed us to continue the journey.”

Mazenod Foundation

The Mazenod Foundation plays a central role in supporting students, strengthening facilities and sustaining the College’s mission. Throughout 2025 the Foundation focused on three key areas: student access, learning environment improvement and long-term financial stewardship.

Supporting Students

Needs-based scholarships helped families experiencing financial difficulty remain connected to the College community. These scholarships reflect the values of compassion, inclusion and service that define Mazenod.

2025 Impact

Strengthening the Learning Environment

The Foundation oversaw completion of the Food Technology Centre and Heritage Building, supported the fully donor-funded Central Courtyard Redevelopment, as well as the Year 7 Complex refurbishment, ensuring facilities continue to meet contemporary learning needs.

Growing Donor Engagement

The Foundation team built stronger relationships with new and returning donors. Communications, events and personalised stewardship helped more families understand the impact of giving and the ongoing needs of the College.

INAUGURAL EVENT

Business Breakfast

The inaugural joint Mazenod Old Collegians Association (MOCA) and Mazenod Foundation Business Breakfast on the 5th of March was a great success. Nearly 90 guests gathered at San Lorenzo Restaurant in Scoresby to hear an engaging conversation between Paul Guerra, CEO of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mazenod’s very own Tom Steinfort (MOC2002). We were also joined by the Member of Parliament for Chisholm, Dr Carina Garland MP, and the Liberal candidate for Chisholm, Dr Katie Allen.

A wide range of topics were covered, from the challenges facing the Victorian economy and the state of its politics to the timing of the Federal election, as well as international issues such as Donald Trump, Ukraine, and the international order. It was a highly informative, topical, and incisive discussion, followed by many questions from guests. MOCA and the Mazenod Foundation were very grateful for the support of Paul and Tom, who ensured the success of this event.

This event is part of a suite of activities, including additional business networking opportunities, social functions, and reunions, that will be offered to our Mazenod community this year. We gratefully acknowledge our sponsors and supporters for their contributions, in particular, Harcourts Judd White and Mercedes-Benz Waverley.

A Taste of Mazenod

On Saturday, 29th of March, Mazenod College proudly hosted A Taste of Mazenod—an evening that brought together alumni, families, staff and friends of the College in a celebration of food, community and shared memories.

Guests enjoyed an exciting range of bite-sized dishes from some of our most accomplished alumni restaurateurs, each served from individually themed stalls in the College’s Central Courtyard. The event also marked the official launch of the Mazenod Foundation’s fundraising campaign to redevelop our Food Technology Centre—an important investment in the future of hands-on learning at Mazenod.

We were honoured to welcome celebrated chef and Old Collegian George Calombaris (MOC1996) as our special guest and patron of the campaign.

In his heartfelt address, George reflected on his years at Mazenod, the importance of community, and the life-long value of learning hospitality skills.

“Mazenod is more than just a school for me. It’s a home away from home, a safe place, a community above all,” George shared. “Hospitality lessons are so important in a young man’s life. It is the simplicity of generosity of spirit—to be able to give, to cook, to care. Everyone deserves that opportunity.

The evening would not have been possible without the generous involvement of our alumni chefs and restaurateurs, who donated their time, creativity and produce. We are also deeply grateful to our current Food Technology students, who volunteered their support in the kitchen and at service points throughout the event. Their professionalism and energy were a credit to the College.

LGT Crestone Networking Event

On the 14th May, Mazenod alumnus, Adrian Ting (MOC1993), hosted an evening briefing and networking event at LGT Crestone, a century-old global wealth manager owned by the Royal Family of Liechtenstein. This intimate gathering, tailored for Mazenod alumni, provided a unique opportunity to connect with industry leaders and gain valuable insights into navigating today’s volatile and uncertain geo-political landscape.

Dr Paul Shannon and Sean Sullivan (MOC1992) welcomed guests and thanked Adrian, who is a Partner and Senior Advisor, and our two speakers, Matthew Tan, Senior Asset Allocation Specialist and Kaajal Prasad, Head of Family Advisory, for their expertise and hospitality.

The evening included a brief presentation on LGT Crestone’s approach to advising clients on investment strategies for 2025, with a focus on positioning portfolios for future growth. Key topics included the importance of intergenerational wealth planning, portfolio diversification, and robust asset protection.

‘Young Professional’ Networking Night

Friday, 9th of May, our Mazenod Old Collegians’ Association (MOCA) hosted a ‘Young Professional’ Networking Night. The evening was held at the Little Bang Espresso in the Ernst Young Building in the former Herald and Weekly Times Building.

Our gathering of our Mazenod Old Collegians was filled with joy, as Nick D’Angelo (MOC 2006) the owner of this magnificent Café’ greeted us.

During the evening, our Old Collegians listened to the career journeys of three Old Boys: Nick D’Angelo (MOC 2006), James Grosso (MOC 2012) and Adam Scott (MOC 1983). It was fascinating and exciting to hear the journeys of these men post their lives at Mazenod College. Each Old Collegian emphasised the impact of the College in their lives, and how this has continued into their adult lives. They spoke about the importance of friendships and networking.

The buzz within the Café’ was palpable and the evening was filled with laughs, fun and great and inspirational personal stories. We thank our guest speakers, and all those who attended.

Central Courtyard Opening & Dedication Event

The Mazenod Foundation was delighted to welcome and thank both past and current donors to our Building Fund who returned to the College on the 12th May to celebrate this significant redevelopment.

The central courtyard space has been transformed and is now used by students all year round with a large undercover space in addition to the landscaping and decking through the gum trees.

This important project was made possible entirely through generous donations to the Mazenod Foundation’s Building Fund.

Dr Paul Shannon thanked our donors, stressing the importance of their philanthropic support, with Fr Harry Dyer OMI, Rector, and Fr Dominic Rozario OMI, Chaplain, conducting the dedication. Mazenod’s first donor board was also proudly displayed, acknowledging the many major supporters of this project.

1967 Bequest Society

The 1967 Bequest Society honours those who have chosen to include Mazenod College in their Will. These benefactors help secure the long-term sustainability of the College and ensure future generations experience the same spirit, formation and opportunities.

In 2025, more community members engaged in conversations about legacy giving, with several families joining the Society or signalling their intention to do so. Their decisions reflect deep gratitude for the role Mazenod played in the lives of their sons and families.

Two key engagement events supported the Society’s growth:

• Police Academy Function hosted by Old Collegian Stephen Fontana (MOC1974), attended by 18 guests.

• Town Hall and Council Chambers Tour hosted by Old Collegian Cr Mark Scott (MOC1984), Councillor of Melbourne City Council, providing a personalised experience for 10 guests.

Members of the Society are acknowledged privately and invited to special events throughout the year. Each member plays an important part in safeguarding the future of the College.

2025 Impact

Growth in confirmed members

Inclusion of Bequest Society stories in community updates

Strengthened communication resources on legacy giving

Increased enquiries and community interest

In 2025, needs-based scholarships enabled students to continue their learning journey and participate fully in College life. These scholarships are funded by generous donors who understand the long-term impact of stability and opportunity for young people.

The stories behind these scholarships show the care and solidarity within our community. Families express deep gratitude for the support that allowed their sons to remain connected to friends, teachers and the College’s broader learning programs.
