Carp Fishing Carp lay up to 1000 eggs, but only 5 carp took the bait at the Mawson Lakes Carp Fishing Competition, despite more than 600 lines in the water. Where were all the carp? Sir Douglas Mawson Lake is seven hectares in size and it was a colourful sight to see anglers positioned around the shoreline with their cans of corn, worms and bread trying to lure a catch.

The competition was held on a beautiful autumn day which you can see on this month’s cover, with autumn roses in the foreground. To find out who caught the biggest fish and the prize they took home go to page 5. The main lake is a wonderful playground, not only for fishing competitions but for model yacht racing and rowing regattas, one of which is coming up in spring.

Feeling Refreshed Terror attacks, theft, murder, in-fighting and political backstabbing is the depressing diet I get from the newspaper each day. It paints a picture of a brutal world. On the other hand, Mawson Lakes Living is a joy to read. Authentic articles, local photographs, attractive colours and beautiful design are uplifting and restores my faith in the goodness of humanity. I feel refreshed after reading MLL.. - Jarrod Folland Best gift for Mother’s day When Australia Post conducted research with 1000 adults nationwide on what mothers want most for mother's day they found that 86 percent of respondents wanted an "I love you". A hand written card with a beautiful message, a handmade gift and spending time with their loved ones were the best gifts. - Ishmael Cove Pay the voluntary fine Everyone knows that fines apply if you speed. So if you exceed the limit be prepared to pay. Consider it a voluntary contribution to the government coffers. If you don’t want to pay, don’t speed. Simple. - Marion Campagna Industry 4.0 I work in the field of advanced manufacturing and I am so pleased to see that MLL frequently reports on progressive technology. Scientists are not good at explaining what they do, but MLL is. The story on the humanoid robot, your succinct summary of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the announcement of the new industry hub for advanced manufacturing (April and May issues) have generated a lot of discussion. At UniSA, Mawson Lakes is right at the cutting edge of Industry 4.0 whereby manufacturing is rapidly moving from the automation of single machines to the automation of entire chains which are linked. Manufacturing hubs for reskilling and upskilling such as the one we have at Mawson Lakes campus (MLL/April) are vitally important to Australia’s economic future. The consequences of the Fourth Industrial Revolution will be profound. - JNJ

Champions of Mawson Lakes I've lived in Shoalhaven a long time and I have observed two outstanding champions of Mawson Lakes that touch most of us in some way. One is Beau Brug (local councillor) who brings vitality to the suburb by organising events, breakfast meetings, neighbourhood watch, cleanups and a listening ear. The other is Linda Vining, editor of Mawson Lakes Living who brings inspiration through good news stories of achievement and progress mixed with gentle humour. Linda is a powerful force in building connectivity and pride within our community. I eagerly look out for MLL each month. Thank you to both. - Margaret Buxton Energy saver Clothes dryers are one of the most expensive household appliances to run, but I have a solar dryer that costs me nothing, even though I use it for long periods every day. It’s called a clothes line. - Marriam Ruwolt Empty bins One of the best things about living in ML is that the community rubbish bins in the streets and parklands are regularly emptied. I come from a place in NSW where the bins were always overflowing, so I really notice the difference. - Sharna Roddick Continued on page 6

Catch a Carp Fishing Competition Around the shore of Sir Douglas Mawson Lake, more than six hundred anglers had their line in the water trying to catch the biggest carp during the Catch a Carp Fishing Competition. It was a colourful sight, pictured on the cover this month.

The heaviest carp caught was 6.5 kg by Deborah Drews who took home a prize of $800 plus a trophy and fishing gear.

Deputy Mayor Julie Woodman and Ralph Czabayski, president of the Game Fishing Club SA, awarding a cheque for $800 to Deborah Drews who caught the biggest carp.

Carp are regarded as a pest because of their destructive bottom-feeding habits which stir up sediments and muddy the water. Carp can grow to a very large size, weighing up to 10 kg but weights of around 4-5 kg are more common. Carp have a greater tolerance of low oxygen levels, pollutants and turbidity than most native fish, and are often associated with degraded habitats, including stagnant waters. They

consume molluscs, crustaceans, insect larvae and seeds. These food items are sucked up (along with mud and water) from the bottom and filtered out using the gill rakers. They can also consume plant material and general organic matter. A 4kg fish can produce up to 1 thousand eggs. Despite this prolific production, only 5 fish were caught on this day so competition was stiff. The fishing competition was organised by Salisbury Council as part of Salisbury Plays and was hosted by the Game Fishing Club of SA. Ed

Community Conversations continued from page 4 Solar Panels I was extremely excited to read in MLL/May about the solar panels along the corner of Elder Smith Road and Main Street. However, I was disappointed to read that the solar panels were only to be used for the university. I believe that such a large and efficient resource should be capable of providing electricity for other community areas, such as the library or main shopping centre. According to the ecoexperts a standard solar panel has the input of around 1000 watts per square metre, and can produce over 200 watts, this is just one domestic solar

Building Troubles With reference to the article about the stalled Emperor Apartments on Main Road (MLL/ June), I want to know why Council approved another building with 9 shops and 6 offices when we have an oversupply of shops and offices that stand empty month after month, some of them for years. - Harry Ashton The instant economy is killing retail My son had a birthday recently so I went online and sent him an e-card. For a gift, I went to Amazon and specified exactly when I wanted it delivered. No going to the shops or standing in line at the post office hoping a parcel would arrive somewhere near the correct date. When I called my son on Skype to add the personal face-to-face chat, he had received everything in perfect timing. It's easy to see why the instant economy is killing

panel! Imagine the amount of energy the solar farm in Mawson Lakes could power. Surely, it can power more than just the university. I feel this could be implemented in more car parks around Mawson Lakes, or on the roofs of public areas, if the university resource cannot supply other areas. I understand that few public areas in Mawson Lakes have solar panels on their roofs, so if more of the solar farms can be added to community areas, Mawson Lakes can become even more green and renewable, helping to support our new generation. - Alexandra Seal (12)

retail. In a world where 18 to 35-year-olds are the best customers of Telstra, Amazon, Apple, Nvidia, PayPal, Netflix, Microsoft, Alibaba and Dropbox, retailers fail to fit in. It’s go direct these days - no old fashioned shopping waiting to be served, finding a parking space, hoping an item will be in stock. Australia Post says the new profit is in delivery services. Based on the volume of parcels delivered, online spending grew almost 20 percent last year to more than $25 million. That’s why so many shops in Mawson Lakes are long-time empty. But, why do developers keep building more shops here? The next generation will look back on shopping precincts in the same way that our generation looks back at black and white television, hard wired phones, and hand written letters. - Trent Sincock

Animation of a raindrop It’s raining outside the Mawson Centre and Shannae (11) is watching a raindrop land on a bare branch. It stays a while then bursts and disappears. With the help of her tutor Kent, Shannae is going to make a cartoon about a raindrop and how it feels to come to earth. To do this she has made a raindrop out of play dough which she will bring to life on the screen showing movement and personality. Shannae is a member of an after-school class on animation held at the Mawson Centre. She is learning how to tell a story in cartoon form using computer software. Her teacher is Kent, a young man who graduated this year with a Bachelor in Film Arts whose dream is to one day be a film director. "Animation is an art form that can be used in a variety of fields including film, television, advertising and video games. It gives life to characters and elements that can communicate. I enjoy working with kids and drawing out their creative talents." he said.

HOLE IN THE STAGE During the performance of a high school talent show, a hole appeared in the stage floor. Subsequent acts managed to avoid the damaged area until one boy accidentally stepped through the hole up to his knee. He apologised to the audience for his clumsiness. A heckler at the back of the stage shouted, "Don’t worry, it’s just a stage you're going through!"

DMC Tax: Taking the stress out of tax The word TAX spells FEAR to many people, according to Danielle McCormack from DMC Tax in Mawson Lakes. "No wonder," she says, "when tax rules change all the time and the Australian Tax Office (ATO) puts people under the microscope and apply heavy penalties for breaking the rules. It’s all rather scary and intimidating." "But, I like problem-solving and my satisfaction comes from helping people take away their tax worries."

Four tips from DMC Tax

Danielle (pictured) who has a background in legal work, has been in Mawson Lakes for seven years and is used to sorting out complex problems such as multiple tax issues where clients have not lodged a tax return for some time. "One of my clients had not lodged a tax return for 18 years! It took me 3 weeks to work it all out but now all obligations have been met and the client feels a great weight has been lifted."

1. Keep receipts for everything and if the receipt is likely to fade, then photocopy, scan or photograph it because the ATO does not accept faded receipts.

In addition to local clients, Danielle works with military personnel, nationally and internationally, using skype and email. "It’s a crucial ingredient for military clients that I understand their conditions, roles and the language of the armed forces."

3. If you are a small business put aside funds each week to pay for Tax, GST, superannuation and PAYG. Don’t let the debt build up!

2. If you have debt, don't ignore it and hope it will go away. It won’t, it gets worse. Find an agent who can work around debt with a payment arrangement plan with the ATO.

4. If you have outstanding obligations with the ATO, don’t stress and put your head in the sand. Find an agent you feel comfortable with and get them to help ease the burden.

"Tax is not just about numbers and refunds, it’s about developing non-judgemental relationships so that people feel at ease when talking with you. We actually have fun doing tax," said the easygoing, fun-loving agent." Ed

It is worthwhile to get to know your dental extras cover. Some policies provide General Cover which refers to basic Dr Peter Bertossa BDS services like check-ups, regular cleans and fillings. Other policies provide Major Cover which includes root canal treatment, crowns, bridges, ceramics and implants. Pretty well all policies have a maximum claiming limit in a calendar year (fewer insurances are based on a financial year). Some policies have individual limits attached to general and major items, others have a single limit for major and general combined. The premiums are highly variable and generally are in proportion to the size of the annual claiming limits and the percentage rebate provided on claimed items.

Work Ethic by Nigella A young, highperforming sheepdog can sell for $25,000. That sounds like a lot of money for a dog, but a farmer at the Sheepdog Trials in the Riverland last month quipped: "A good dog can perform the job of three men, AND, you don’t have to pay superannuation, holiday rates or sick leave!"

Would they make it around the course in 15 minutes before the hooter?

I spent two days at the sheepdog trials (below) watching in awe as the super-fast, super-intelligent dogs (mainly border collies) took control in turn of a mob of three skittish sheep and manoeuvered them around the football oval at Barmera.

Mummy asked some farmers if she could take a picture of me (city dog) with my handsome country cousins. Everybody was most obliging, but when mummy asked if we could give the dogs a small treat to say thank you, the farmers replied sternly: "NO we don’t give our dogs treats. They’re not interested in food, they just love to work. That’s their treat." Wow, what a work ethic!

Mummy and I reckon it was much more entertaining and suspenseful than a football match!

Caring For Your Feet with Mardi Edwards

I recently attended a podiatry conference entitled ACTIVATE. The theme of the conference was the importance of physical activity in the aim of improving both physical and mental health resulting in enhanced quality of life. This is achieved by encouraging our patients to move more and sit less.

The World Health Organisation recommends 150 to 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week including two strengthening sessions. It is estimated that only around 43% of Australians meet this target. Reduced physical activity has been linked to weight gain, diabetes, heart disease, joint pain, cancer and mental health issues.

The conference highlighted the reality that around one in five people over the age of 18 years have foot pain which can reduce a person's ability and enthusiasm to participate in physical activity. It is understandable then, that if your feet hurt you wont walk. As podiatrists we are in a good position to evaluate the cause of foot pain which may include joint and muscle pain, arthritis, functional or alignment issues. We can advise on footwear, stretches, strengthening , orthoses to improve lower limb function and exercises to improve mobility and help people achieve their health goals. Don't let foot and leg pain hold you back. Move more and sit less.

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 145, July 2019

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR! A man was walking on a beach one day where he found a bottle half buried in the sand. He opened it and a genie appeared. The genie said, "I will grant you three wishes but only three." The man thought about his three wishes and said "I want a million dollars transferred to my bank account." Poof … it happened. Next he wished for a new model Ferrari. Poof… there was the car waiting for him. For his final wish he said to the genie "I want to be irresistible to women." Poof … he turned into a bunch of red roses!
