THE CREATION OF A VILLAGE… ONE STEP AT A TIME

Once the main entry, public amenities and landscaping were updated they turned their attention to the offering of the centre. Recognising that many of the businesses were operated by local families they looked to build on this by partnering with specialty coffee operator Entice Coffee who recently celebrated their 6th anniversary at the centre.

Welcoming the SA family owned 48 Flavours gelato to the centre in 2019 was the next step in the right direction, providing residents in the Northern suburbs a convenient dessert option to enjoy with family and friends – something previously lacking in the City of Salisbury and surrounds.

“We see our shopping centre as a huge opportunity to create a sense of belonging and community togetherness, where you can catchup with your friends or family over a coffee or gelato, pay the bills at the post office and pickup your groceries whilst maintaining that local village charm that’s missing in so many of shopping destinations today,” said a Paralowie Village spokesperson.

Recognising this missing shared point of connection, Paralowie Village partnered with the City of Salisbury in 2022 to deliver a mural as part of the Council’s ‘Create a Place’ project aimed at promoting art and culture in the state’s north. This mural, created by Adelaide-born artist Mike Makatron, focused on embracing diversity and celebrating the culture and identities of the community of Paralowie and surrounds.

The blank wall behind the centre presents the perfect canvas to create and activate a public realm where residents, students and visitors of the shopping centre and nearby Settlers Farm primary school are encouraged to stop, enjoy, interact and engage with the mural. It is envisaged this mural will be the first of many more to be commissioned as part of a larger project.

To assist in catering to the growing demands in Paralowie and surrounds, a threestorey expansion is planned adjacent to the centre which will feature a mix of wellness, office and retail space and is hoped local businesses will choose to stay and operate in the Northern suburbs rather than move into the city.

When they took ownership of the centre in 2013, the new owners of Paralowie Village had a vision to convert the tired neighbourhood shopping centre to a vibrant hub reminiscent of the village town centre of days gone by.

TOP TIPS FOR HELPING YOUR KIDS NAVIGATE DIGITAL LIFE

Fast-changing technology and the ways to manage its impact are of great concern for parents. But helping your children develop their skills is a more constructive approach than strict rules and outright bans says Jocelyn Brewer, Assoc MAPS. Here are her top 7 tips:

1. BE A POSITIVE DIGITAL MENTOR

Parents are important role models for children – and this extends to screen and smartphone use. Be mindful of your own digital habits, to ensure you set a valuable example of safe and savvy digital citizenry.

2. PLAY TOGETHER

Using technology together – by viewing content or playing games – is a good way to prompt meaningful conversations about device use, online activities and interactions. This will help young people make sense of their experiences and build skills to circumvent online issues.

Using technology together is a good way to prompt meaningful conversations about device use, online activities and interactions.

3. TALK AND TALK AGAIN

Encourage conversations about the online activities in which all family members engage, so that you can positively influence online behaviour. Bring curiosity rather than fear to these conversations. Talk about what you and they do, see and read online, how they feel about this activity, and how they respond to others.

Don’t sweat the screentime. Focus instead on helping children and teens to develop their own capacity to problem solve, act effectively and stay safe online.

4. IT TAKES MORE THAN SOFTWARE

There are hundreds of software monitoring and tracking tools designed to help manage technology use, or block ageinappropriate content. But the thinking ability and social skills that help children manage their own online use are much more important.

5. BUILD THEIR SKILLS

Focus on helping children and teens to develop their own capacity to problem solve, act effectively and stay safe online.

6. DON’T BAN, PLAN

Involve your children in decisions about what are meaningful restrictions on the use of devices, based on what is fair and healthy.

Effective technology contracts involve consistency, protecting time offline for exercise, socialising and other activities. Avoid using time online as a currency and create rewards and consequences that suit your particular family.

7. DON’T SWEAT THE SCREENTIME

Parents can get caught up on the amount of time their children spend online. Yet there is no agreement among experts as to what constitutes excessive time online. Instead, focus on:

– the quality of the content (who made the app, game or wrote the blog and why?)

– the context in which the technology is being used (when alone, in groups, or to pacify a child in a café or in a tantrum?)

– the cognitions (that is, the mental action) associated with the activity (is it constructive?)

– the function of the activity (study, connection, info gathering, or other uses?)

Asking these more detailed questions about online activities will help parents make more informed decisions about whether particular technology use is serving their children’s wellbeing and development, and how to help their children manage this tech use.

THE COMEBACK TO END ALL COMEBACKS

A number of years ago

Sports Illustrated magazine released a list of the Greatest Comebacks of all time. Here’s the top 5:

5. Muhammed Ali, 1974. 7 years after being out of ring he re-claims his heavyweight title.

4. John Travolta, 1994. Rebooted his career by starring in Pulp Fiction.

3. Michael Jordan, 1995. Quits baseball to make a comeback in the NBA.

2. Japan and Germany, 1950’s. Devastated during WW2 they rise to become economic superpowers within a generation.

1. Jesus Christ, 33 A.D. Defies critics and stuns the Romans with his resurrection.

There’s a common factor in these stories. At some point, someone is down and out, out of favour, out of luck, out of options, out of hope. But they staged great comebacks and wrote their name into the history books.

Jesus’ story, however, is a little different. People thought he was a “one hit wonder”. Sure they’d witnessed the spectacular and the supernatural but he was laid in a tomb like everyone else they loved. His would soon be a story long forgotten. Or so they thought.

At this point in our world today I know many people who are struggling, stressed, overwhelmed with life’s challenges. Perhaps you are one. If this is the case, then Jesus is a guy you need to get to know. Sure His story reads like a fairy tale – “Ordinary man comes back from the dead!” but Jesus was and is no ordinary man. He is God. Don’t believe me? Grab yourself a Bible or contact your local Christian church to find out more.

At Easter we celebrate Jesus – a living, breathing, real God who staged the comeback to end all comebacks. His story is not about death, it’s about life.

Sure Arnie Schwarzenegger made the phrase “I’ll be back” famous. But Jesus said it first!
