Quality of reporting Commenting on the article by Fran Harvey about the delivery of the local newspaper (MLL/Jan). I believe the problem facing the local Messenger is not just delivery it’s the content - just a rehash of articles and opinion pieces I have read in the Advertiser the week before. Not worth receiving. - Joseph Keampt Language of love Thank you for the Valentine's Day puzzle, the love balls and the pages sprinkled with roses (MLL/Feb). Decades ago my lover (now husband) would write me a beautiful love letter for Valentine’s Day hand-delivered with a bunch of red roses. As the years moved on, this changed to a greeting card with roses on the cover and a nice verse, all of which I have kept in my treasure chest. Now 20 years later, his love is still strong but the medium has changed. This year he sent me an email on Valentine’s Day with the following emoji How does a girl keep this in her treasure chest? - Violet Starkie Sounds of the city The noise from trains, planes and motor traffic are the sounds of a city. At Mawson Lakes we experience noise from flight training planes coming and going from Parafield. This does not disturb me but I know that many people complain about planes overhead. They will be pleased to hear that, as a result of technology advances, a SA aviator is testing fully electric aeroplanes intended for flight schools. Electric
We have lived in Mawson Lakes for 18 months and I have just set up a mobile car cleaning business and washed the MLL car. We keep every copy of Mawson Lakes Living. It's a top quality publication with something for everyone. Aerial fire fighters stay in Mawson Lakes To celebrate 10 years in the restaurant business in Mawson Lakes, Mary Vannini, owner of La Vita, hosted an anniversary party as a fundraiser for the Kangaroo Island Bushfire Appeal. She honoured the three American firefighters staying in the Quest Apartments. The event raised $15,000 through auctions, raffles and donations.
Jim Nickelson, captain of the Erikson Aero Tanker (pictured) told a packed house that the plane, stationed at the RAAF Base at Edinburgh can carry 3000 gallons of water (11,350 litres). The retardant they drop is a mixture of water and ammonium sulphate, coloured with red dye to show where the retardant has been released. The colour disappears in a few days. Ed

Easter – The real story of Survivor! Did your household succumb to the grip of "Survivor – Champions vs Contenders"?
Jesus was a "Survivor". The Easter story reminds us that He was an outcast in His community.
If you are one of the very few people who are unfamiliar with the TV show (are there any out there?) the brief premise is this: contestants compete in challenges for rewards and immunity from elimination. They are progressively eliminated from the game and voted off the island by their fellow castaways. The final player is awarded the title of "Sole Survivor" and some serious money!
In the end He was even rejected by family and friends, strung up on a cross, laughed at and left to die. Three days later though, God – His real Father – raised Him from the dead. His was - and is - a remarkable story of survival and hope. Ever felt lonely? Rejected? Voted out? Jesus identifies with you, and He wants you to know there is a place for you in His tribe. Learning life skills in Girl Guides Known around Mawson Lakes for her resilience and enthusiasm, Kerry Henderson is the coordinator of Girl Guides. After 20 years at Girls Guides, starting in Modbury then moving to Mawson Lakes, she still has a lot more to give.
"Girl Guides teaches girls to be independent, pragmatic and skilled for life. Girls from 5 years onwards join the group. They earn badges progressing their way to become junior or adult leaders, taking charge of units or a group of girls." Kerry said the program is designed in a way that caters to each girl’s pace and no one feels left out. Girl Guides prepares them towards the reallife challenges, such as designing an evacuation plan in case of fire, land care, child protection and managing records.
"If you’ve ever bought a packet of Girl Guides biscuits you are helping us fundraise, but more than selling biscuits it teaches the girls entrepreneurial skills, management, presentation, patience and negotiation." Kerry puts it, "It is not about selling the product, but a learning experience for the girls." At the end of a normal day at Girl Guides, Kerry feels pumped to do more the next time. Twisha tackles Year maths and English

Despite only starting high school last year, Twisha Srivastava can tackle many of the maths and English content that Year 12 students study. Twisha, in Year 8, completed both Kumon Maths and English programmes towards the end of last year at Kumon Mawson Lakes Education Centre. “I’ve been doing Kumon for over four years now. I’ve been ahead for about two and a half years”, Twisha says. “Kumon Maths helped me to perform quick mental calculations and to complete equations. It’s also helped me figure out the best methods for solving problems.” “Kumon English has helped in all subjects. It helps me to interpret questions and analyse texts.” Kumon is an individualised after-school maths and English programme. Advanced students can go ahead to study content that is above their school grade, while those who may be falling behind can go back to practise and revise.

Actioning the Vision The vision of Endeavour College to offer best practice in education to prepare young people for a future world, was demonstrated when the school officially opened its Senior Years Centre in March. The school is putting its vision into practice partly through an expansion of its learning spaces. Principal Heather Vogt said the students played an important role in the design of the contemporary building that is one continuous, interrelated and integrated entity full of colour and light. "Our students were looking for greater autonomy and choice in their day, flexibility in areas of study within subjects, and a chance to project manage their own learning. This new centre facilitates modern learning styles."

BLACKFRIARS OPEN EVENING Construction of the $10 million Aquinas Centre at Blackfriars is well under way with the facility set to open before the end of 2020. The new building, the first in the school’s bold Master Plan launched in 2018, will house state-of-the-art STEM workshops and laboratories as well as a specialist Year 12 centre. The project includes the creation of new open spaces near the main entrance to Blackfriars 4.5ha Prospect Road campus. “Developments such as the Aquinas Centre reflect the needs of contemporary educational thinking and research,” says Principal, Mr Simon Cobiac. “The spaces we are creating at Blackfriars over the next few years as part of our Master Plan focus on innovative learning methods - on the development of creative thinking ability rather than the traditional accumulation of knowledge and expansion of predetermined skills.” “While research suggests the most important factor in effective education is the work of educators themselves,” Mr Cobiac reflects, “appropriate environments play a significant role in supporting their efforts.”

Going to a University Senior College Hania Haider from, Mawson Lakes, University Senior College enrolled in Year 11. This year she is in Year 12 at the coeducational senior secondary school. She likes the College’s open approach to an independent learning environment and the ability for students to utilise the University of Adelaide’s facilities. She said that students who attend a university senior college have chosen to be here.
"There is a mutual respect among the staff and students, in a supportive adult learning environment and I like that I can be myself and don’t have to wear a uniform." Hania’s goal is to study medicine in 2021. "Initially, it was hard to get used to an adult learning style but you adapt quickly. I feel I have matured and will be well prepared for university next year." Hania travels every day to the city from Mawson Lakes and says it is so easy to get to USC because the public transport from Mawson Lakes goes direct to the city.

I'm a fun-loving member of my family and we like to go places together, but when mummy uses public transport I have to stay at home. We’d like to take a trip on a train to the country, but because I’m not allowed on trains we won’t go. In an economy urging people to visit and support regional towns this is a full stop. The good news is that public and political support is growing for dogs on public transport. Around two thirds of households own pets, and many people use public transport and would like to take their dogs with them. Already accommodation places realise that by refusing dogs they are losing business, hence many are changing their policies on pets. I like the RSPCA idea of a certification program that gives dogs a tick of approval for behaviour and socialisation to allow them to travel on public transport.
