Keeping Cool It's summertime. Beach time, but have you ever been to a nudist beach?

And it's a year for Classic Blue according to the Pantone Colour Institute. Pantone selected this hue for 2020 because it instils calm, confidence and connection.

Comic poet, Jill Wherry has. She had us laughing at the Mawson Lakes Garden Club last month with her humorous verse, so I bought her book and asked if I could reproduce some of her poems in Mawson Lakes Living.

Intellectual theft Be aware, an app is stealing material from MLL community contributions (copywriter protected), calling it their own, and worse still, changing the name of the original contributor. They took my comments to MLL about "Attracting rats" (MLL/Oct) added it to their app and changed my name on the comment. I call this intellectual theft. - Emma Oreskin Who stole my shoe? Rob was working on the irrigation system in his garden in Mawson Lakes, wearing his favourite leather sandals. The shoes got soaked on the job so when he went inside he took them off and left them on the doormat. Next morning he discovered that one sandal was gone. Who would come into his yard and steal just one shoe? It was a mystery. Fortunately Rob's house is monitored by CCTV and he was able to identify the culprit. It was a fox! - Heather Laing Overpopulation The biggest threat to global warming is overpopulation. As human consumption grows and suburbs expand we are experiencing a rapid deterioration in our environment and an erosion of our quality of life. Politicians talk about sustainability, but their obsession with endless growth for business profit is the major cause of our planet’s problems. - Craig Skewers Slow down cars When I look at the speedometers on cars I wonder why domestic cars are built to go so fast, some at 240km/h. Speed kills and this is a temptation to speed. Limit speed at the point of manufacture to 120km/hr. It’s not the journey, but the people you meet along the way, nice to have met you Linda as I live my life’s journey. - Sharon Canino Emperor abandoned Did you see that the Emperor Apartments on Main Street has been declared by the Adelaide 4

Everything in one place Ten years ago when we were new to Mawson Lakes with young children Mawson Lakes Living was our guide to finding groups to join and services to use. Today our children are at the local school and we use MLL to keep informed about what’s happening, what’s going and what’s coming. We love it here everything you need is here, all wrapped up in a pretty green package. - Marilee Wilson, Sheaoak Drive Advertiser an urban eyesore. The building on a major gateway to Mawson Lakes has come to a standstill after numerous delays, a licensing investigation and a law case with contractors for non-payment of fees. Builder Frank Barbaro has abandoned construction of the $30 million highrise which Salisbury Council approved more than 3 years ago. (Adelaide Advertiser 26/11/19) Plagiarism and ghost writing A solution to the problem of plagiarism and ghost writing (MLLNov) is to include an appropriate supervised assessment. It may be a traditional exam, sample assessment, assignment theory applied to a case study, practical demonstration, interview, etc. Then it no longer matters who wrote the assignment/s. If the student can do a properly constructed, supervised assessment, then learning has taken place. This will ensure the student does not walk away with a pass and absolutely no change in knowledge or skills. - John Winter

Mother Coot has built a floating home to raise her chicks. Just as grand as the other houses around the lake. Her nest is on the cover of the magazine. She will lay between 4-15 eggs and the cute chicks should be out'n'about this month. Coots eat waterweeds, aquatic algae, shoots and seeds. To find out more about them and other local birds see "Birds of Mawson Lakes" published online by Mawson Lakes Living. Birdwatching is a great outdoor activity for the school holidays.

Defence giant coming to Mawson Lakes L3Harris, a global aerospace and defence technology company, is expanding its global footprint by coming to Mawson Lakes in 2020. The business which specialises in marine control systems and simulation products, is establishing a central operational hub in Technology Park, already home to other multinational defence companies, to manage the delivery and integration of L3Harris systems for the new Offshore Patrol Vessels, and other future platforms. The technology cuts navy’s life-cycle costs by reducing manning requirements and increasing ship survivability. In the lead up to the start of the Hunter class frigate build, the company is looking to grow its skilled local workforce by nearly 20.

6

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 151, January 2020

Rangesh Kasturi, President, Maritime International, L3Harris, said the company made the strategic decision to establish a core hub in South Australia to collaborate more closely with the program’s lead designers and support Australia’s continuous naval shipbuilding program underway at the Osborne Naval Shipyard.

"South Australia is positioned as a growing and thriving hub for defence business. It's an excellent opportunity for us to grow our Australian footprint and expand our presence in the maritime domain in the region"

Beauty product clean out It’s a new year and time to toss out all the out-ofdate and out-of-fashion beauty products that fill your drawers and bathroom cabinets. Like the food in your fridge, the makeup in your bathroom goes off. As time goes by the quality of the products deteriorate - ingredients start to separate, active ingredients lose their powers and bacteria forms. All of which can cause irritation to your skin and clog your fine features. Here are some guidelines to give your makeup a clean bill of health.

MASCARA If used daily, mascara is good for 3 months. If used less frequently, toss it after 6 months. It’s a breeding ground for bacteria.

FOUNDATION Liquids last roughly 12 months, cream-to-powder formulas two years and powder foundations (loose or pressed) can last up to five years. In that time your skin colour and tone is likely to change so it’s best to buy fresh every few years.

LIPSTICKS Bacteria grows on old lipsticks so throw out after 2 years. If it smells bad, it is.

8

Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 151, January 2020

EYESHADOW and other powders, such as blush can last 2 years or more, unless they have been wet in which case you need to bin them after 6 months.

PERFUME If stored in its box, away from heat and light and not on a shelf in the humid bathroom, perfume will last six to 18 months. Once a bottle is opened it should be used up because scent evaporates and perfumes change smell.

EYELINERS AND LIP LINERS Can last up to two years and will last longer if sharpened regularly.

NAIL POLISH It’s time to throw it out if the product separates and won’t stay mixed. A good polish should be useable for 2 years.

KEEPING COOL MLL asked locals, "How do you keep cool in extreme heat?

PREE The coolest place in our house is the garage so I go there and put on the fan

WEI LI AND FAMILY We take the children to the library where it's cool and there’s lots to do

RITA TUCKER WITH HALLE MURRAY We go to the beach or play in the swimming pool

Jill Wherry is a poet of comic verse. One day her friend Eunice invited her for a day at the beach. It took Jill by surprise that the beach was for nudists. Here’s Jill's take on it. My friend Eunice, who’s a fan of the sun, Enjoys spending her days by the sea. I can now barely wait, my excitable mate Is intending to share one with me.

At last Eunice can sit and we chat for a bit, She is checking the men while we joke. Then she waves, says "Hello" while I'm yelling "Oh No!" For eventually up struts a bloke.

We take Eunice’s car; it is faster by far And set off for a day without care. But I’d never have come for my day in the sun If I’d guessed what Eunice would dare.

Eunice holds out a hand and he flops to the sand, Then reclines with a confident pose. I look straight in his eyes, hoping nothing will rise, In a panic for one never knows.

In the bustling car-park for a bit of a lark, She abandoned the clothing she wore. In a sunhat she stood, otherwise she was nude And I dreaded what else was in store.

I think, let the man flirt, as I reach for my shirt My friend Eunice will know what to say. I don’t care for this stuff: I find one man’s enough But the blighter is staring my way.

I’m not one to be rude; I'm a bit of a prude And my bathers are under a skirt, So I’m taken aback as Eunice swans down the track Flashing boobs so incredibly pert.

Now the cheeky young sod says, "Young lady, it’s odd You’re the only one here that’s attired If you’ve scars under there, that’s a tough cross to bear When your friend here is so much admired."

Eunice gives me a grin, then she oils up her skin. I reply "Sir, don’t malign this unmarked body of mine. What wouldn’t I give for that figure? It is flawless; I've no scars to hide." Though I'm brown as can be, in the places you can see Though faced with perfection, he senses rejection My body’s decidedly bigger. When I head for the incoming tide. Eunice goes for a run and she glints in the sun. The eyes of bronzed Aussies all seek her. As they watch her fly past, every bloke is aghast. She’s such an incredible streaker.

CHUKKI KUMAR (9) I make an ice bottle and keep busy indoors. I like reading and writing

MAY LAY We stay indoors, pull down our heat-resistant blinds, turn on the air con and drink lots of water

SPOT THE DIFFERENCES Find the 7 differences in the 2 summer sandcastle pictures below.

ADEN HARRIS I take a cool shower at the end of the day after school

BRADLEY RICHARDSON We work outdoors so when the temp reaches 36 degrees it’s time to knock off work and go inside

Keeping your cool this summer The prediction is that SA will have more heatwaves that last longer. Extreme heat is when temperatures are hotter than 35°C. The official definition of a heatwave is five consecutive days at or above 35°C. In these conditions our body may not be able to cool down and it is easy to become overheated and dehydrated. The signs of heat-related conditions include: sweating heavily • having a temperature • being tired and lethargic • having little appetite • being thirsty • being irritable • twitching or having painful muscle cramps in the arms, legs or abdomen

Solution is on page 19

If you, or someone you know, is showing these signs and feeling unwell: Stop what you are doing, go to a cool, shaded place and lie down • Drink plenty of water or other fluids, avoiding caffeine and alcohol • Create an air flow with a fan or an airconditioner, put a cool damp towel around your neck, spray cool water on your skin or have a cool shower • Use massage to ease any spasms or cramps, then use ice packs • If still unwell after taking these steps, seek medical advice as soon as possible Please mention Mawson Lakes Living when responding to ads

Dogs in Public Spaces by Nigella Banned from the Salisbury Community Hub I was all dressed up for the opening of the new Salisbury Community Hub wearing my prettiest purple collar and lead. Because of the crowd mummy put me in my doggie stroller. We arrived at the entrance to the grand building, but as soon as we stepped inside, a security officer pounced on us and said I was not allowed inside. Imagine me ... a security risk ?*^*? I spend all my time smiling at people, accepting pats, giving little kisses and acting as a PR girl for Mawson Lakes Living. So, having been banned from the community hub, we sat outside in the cold wind. This is not the first time I have been shut out of a Salisbury Council community event. Last time it was the Fringe in the parklands. It prompts me to say that Salisbury Council is NOT dog-friendly. Mummy and I often hear people say: "If my dog is not welcome, I don’t go there." Well don’t go to Salisbury community events.

Nigella and Oats at the opening of the Salisbury Community Hub Oats. These are assistance dogs. I had a nice talk to Oats at the event. He’s from Mawson Lakes too. As more and more businesses and councils realise that the companionship of dogs is integral to wellbeing, and dogs are family members, Salisbury Council needs to modernise its approach and policies regarding dogs in public places. Sure, if a dog behaves poorly it should be required to leave, but don’t penalise polite dogs. We add to the community, not take from it!
