Mawson Lakes Living : Issue 152, February 2020

Action Words It's early morning so Nigella and I are off for a walk in the parklands. As I listen to the birds and watch the trains go by and the planes overhead I am so grateful to live in Mawson Lakes in a beautiful, green, urban place - safe from wars, bushfires, volcanoes and floods with plenty of fresh water and power and ample supplies of food. 2020 is a year of promise for all of us. We're getting ready for the Fringe in Salisbury and in Mawson Lakes. You can see what's happening on pages 5 and 20. Love is in the air as we celebrate Valentine's Day on 14 February, so MLL asked some of the locals how they will celebrate the day. See what they say in the Centrefold on pages 10 and 11.

We also have a treat for you to make for this occasion, contributed by one of our young readers (see page 11). May you achieve great things this year, and to help you think positively I've included a list of Action Words below.

have your say...

Meaning of Christmas I receive Mawson Lakes Living every month and really enjoy reading the contents and happenings of the residents of Mawson Lakes. I found the magazine invaluable when I was new to the area . I write however about the cover of the December Issue. As a Christian I remind your magazine that Christmas is a Christian festival. It is not about "good fortune" or "good will" - it is about Jesus, God's Son. The elephants used on the front cover have nothing to do with Jesus at all. They are from other festivals and celebrations and I just wonder why they, instead of the Christian symbols - a baby, a manger, shepherds, Mary and Joseph were not used at all. - Susan Wallace (Major) Area Officer Northern (SA/NT), The Salvation Army Australia Good tidings What an unusual and creative cover for the Christmas issue. I did exactly as you said and put the magazine with the elephants on the table at my door - Marlene Ban Fireworks Fireworks send the wrong message in so many ways. Insensite to firefighters, agonising for pets, and they demonstrate that councils have money to burn. I for one do not want my rates going up in smoke! - Harry Debelle Change of tactics for local newspaper A few years ago the local paper 'The Messenger' stopped home deliveries largely in response to complaints from residents about newspapers lying in soggy lumps on the footpaths and loose pages flying around the suburb. The next delivery strategy was to bury The Messenger deep in The Advertiser where it was lost. In 2020 that strategy 4

A new life in Mawson Lakes Last year my husband and I made the huge decision to leave behind our families and friends in India and seek a safe place to raise our young son. We found it here in Mawson Lakes. On arrival, we didn’t know a single person so I volunteered at the Salvation Army shop and found work with Mawson Lakes Living. I am now surrounded by friendship and support and our son is enrolled in Mawson Lakes School. We are so happy to be here and grateful for the kindness and care people have shown us. - Cheena Yadav stopped and now the editor has announced that The Messenger will re-size and go out with catalogues (that is, junk mail). This is bound to fail. On some days I count more than 20 pieces of junk mail in my letterbox which goes into the recycled bin as I walk to my front door. The editor reports that houses displaying NO JUNK MAIL will not receive The Messenger. In my street in Mawson Lakes 8 of the 10 letterboxes have no junk mail stickers. When the auditor checks up on deliveries I hope he does not overlook the high percentage of NO JUNK MAIL letterboxes - Fran Harvey Volcano risks I was once on a cruise in the Bay of Plenty in NZ and got up close to White Island. Volcanoes exit all over NZ and further on in our travels we went swimming in the hot pools in Rotorua and breathed in the sulphurous air. Volcanoes are risky but they have benefits such as geothermal energy, hot springs and geysers that attract tourists. Getting close to volcanoes offers a rare opportunity to experience

the power of the restless earth- the smouldering, seething release of pressure from the brittle crust. But with the reward comes a range of risks. If you are in the wrong place at the wrong time, an erupting volcano can be lethal, but adventure tourism should not be curtailed for those who are willing to take the risk. - Brent Pollack Narrow street traffic hazard A severe hazard exists in Augustine Street. The narrow winding street always has parked cars on either side making it difficult and dangerous to navigate. Added to this, buses use this narrow thoroughfare. If one side of Augustine Street was made No Standing/No Parking it would allow the safe passage of vehicles on either side. - Chris Clapoudis A drink for the birds and the bees I counted 22 birds sipping from the birdbath in my garden the other day. Clean water is a small act of kindness for local birds, bees and other wildlife. You don’t need anything fancy - an old dish, a meat tray or a dog's bowl will do. Put a rock in it for flying animals to land on and clean it every day or two.( Don't leave water stagnant to become a breeding ground for mosquitos). - Maj Gupta Environmental destruction The Murray River is dry, the Barrier Reef is bleached, the forests are burned and now we’re going to pillage the Great Australian Bight. - Omar Capri Effective advertising We have lived in Mawson Lakes since 2008 and I love this little mag. I read all the ads and if one is relevant I make contact because I like to support locals and talk to real people who know the place. I've been meaning to put a business advert in the magazine myself and now I have. Can you find me on p15? - Malcolm Morrison from 'Accolade'

City of Salisbury Mayor Gillian Aldridge OAM With festival season just on the horizon it is an exciting time to be a resident or visitor in South Australia – and the City of Salisbury is no exception. The Adelaide Fringe is set to kick off on Friday 14 February and there are plenty of local events to check out in your own backyard. City of Salisbury’s own Salisbury Secret Garden will be back once again in a brand new location on Friday 21 February to Sunday 23 February. Come along and enjoy a weekend of wonderful music, arts and family fun with activities, a range of performances, food and market stalls all available. Please consider checking out a range of other Fringe events being held locally, such as the Salisbury Youth Performing Arts Group’s rendition of ‘I Hate Shakespeare!’ – a comical and modern take on the author’s wellknown classics. The three-day event will this year centre on the fabulous new facilities at the Salisbury Community Hub and surrounding Civic Plaza/ Inparrinthi Kumangka. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page, website and in next month’s edition of Mawson Lakes Living for further details.

Wellbeing in a Mens Shed Robert Hicks lives a small house in Mawson Lakes; too small for a woodworking shed out the back, so he joined the local Mens Shed where he goes twice a week to craft beautiful bowls, tables, furniture and jewellery boxes. In the photograph on this month's cover Robert is working on a lathe fashioning a bowl from dark red Jarrah wood. Russell Mattie (pictured in the background) is a retired electrician and a member of the leadership team at the Salvos Mens Shed at Pooraka. He said the Shed is open to any man of any age, and individuals can work on their own projects or join in collaborative projects. "We work on a lot of community projects that build and repair things for schools, the Salvation Army and other charitable organisations and we make a lot of toys for children. We are self-funding and most of our machinery and wood is donated.’’

"Men love working with tools, and blokes like to make things, so this is an outlet for their creativity, but it is also a place where men can develop friendships and talk amongst themselves." Members come from different backgrounds and interests and many are retired. They do not need any workshop experience.

Toys sold at the Mawson Lakes Christmas Market to support the Salvos Mens Shed.

"We have casual coffee times, social events, mentors, guest speakers and conferences with other mens sheds,” said Russell. "Through social interaction and regular activity, men develop a sense of belonging and this is a positive community approach to men’s health and wellbeing,” he said. Going to school for the first time “We want to go to school” screeched the kids in unison, as I sat with Swati talking about how we have prepared our kids for school at Mawson Lakes Primary, and the emotions that were welling up inside us. ‘Oh! They are first-timers, alright.’ we laughed. Swati and I met at the school orientation event and have been friends since then. She showed me her ‘To-Do’ list which read: carry your own bag, water bottle, lunch box and Mum’s note. She read my expression and started to explain. “I came up with an idea to make my daughter happy through the day by drawing a smile or heart on sticky notes that I placed on the different items she would use throughout the day.”

in a couple of days it wouldn’t be such of tearjerker for first time mums. As a mother myself, I could understand the mixed feelings she was having. My son is really looking forward to school. He jumped to show a drawing of himself going to school on a sunny day with his backpack. The red blocks are the school buildings. I am sure every mother cherishes such special moments and creates memories of her child's drawings, craft and the tiniest things they do, because going to school is such a magical experience. Article by Cheena Yadav. Illustration by Adam. (pictured together above)

“They are becoming more independent and I am proud of that,” she said. ‘I had to hide all the school uniforms in the holidays so she doesn’t keep dressing up in them.’ Swati laughed. Soon, the children would be out of our sight and

BOLD Water by Nigella Reservoirs across South Australia are being opened to the public so we grabbed the chance to see SA’s largest dam - the Mount Bold Reservoir at Kangarilla. In less than an hour from Mawson Lakes we were at this super-sized dam, jumping out of the car and walking across the wall of the weir. On the left side was a big lake of calm water, but when I put my nose next to the steel fence on the other side I got a huge shock. A thundering cascade of white water was gushing over the spillway to the valley far below. The mighty drop, the updraft wind and the noise of falling water scared me, but

mummy kept me close on a safe, tight lead and talked me through it, so I was ok. This is big scale stuff. The massive dam is made of millions of tons of concrete and was built a long time ago to provide water for Adelaide, and protect the city from flooding. The reserve is a beautiful place surrounded by towering forest, steep gullies and walking trails, but we couldn't find any picnic spots so we pulled our fold-up chairs from the boot and settled under the shade of a tree with our bread rolls from the nearby Clarendon Bakery. Well I had a doggie biscuit...OK... and a bit of chicken from mummy's roll.

It’s back to school and into the textbooks but my school holiday in Europe gave me a new perspective on life. We visited exciting places filled with history and art, and although we did not go to the theme parks or water parks, we had a fantastic time.

BIBLE WORKSHOP: STUDY AIDS AND HOW TO USE THEM Sponsored by Jeff: 0422 767 227

Whilst we saw some sights common in the travel catalog, the pure spectacular moments were the times we discovered things like a secret entrance to a castle, a mysterious alley filled with local residents, ancient historical landmarks and the hidden secrets of the catacombs of Paris. We all learn about the World Wars in class, but what we don't learn is that thousands of dead soldiers are yet to be identified, just piled on top of each other without a care.

Travelling develops curiosity, appreciation and the ability to connect with people from the past and present on a deeper level than a textbook. I would definitely recommend saving as much money as you can, so that one day you can travel and experience life on a deeper level of reality. Travelling to amazing places filled with rich culture certainly inspired me. There are so many more secrets and stories left to be discovered. - Alexa (12) pictured above in Europe.

PLIGHT OF A CREDIT CARD

I am a valued credit card; my mates are valued too. We live inside the wallets of people just like you. But some of us, so lonesome, rarely see the light of day, While others get an airing at the shops along the way. My owner is a lady with a Christmas shopping bug. A hopeless shopaholic, for whom spending is a drug. Buying presents in a frenzy for her is never hard. She simply hands me over and says, ”Wrap ‘em; here’s my card.” She studies all the catalogues; and when time is short she phones And buys designer labels overpriced at David Jones. She splurges on the children; Pumpkin Patch sells such trendy gear. So I’m used just like a yoyo at Christmas every year. She buys her hubby golf clubs so he’ll head off to the course. Then she can have that facelift he’s refusing to endorse. The cost of beauty treatments now she’s older grows and grows No ready cash available, so on me it goes. One day the lady’s husband gave a loud ear-piercing curse And ripped me out in anger from my home in the lady’s purse. He grabbed his wife’s sharp scissors and he chopped me up, the beast. So now I am a credit card that sadly is deceased. Adapted from "40 Reasons To Smile" by Jill Wherry 18
