Fear of unbalanced development is a recurring theme around the traps. Mawson Lakes was designed as a residential village with narrow streets and close living. It was not designed for high-rise development and heavy traffic. Locals are not happy about recent developments and their concerns are loudly voiced in Community Conversations in this issue. Editor's Choice The splendid cover of MLL/June featuring the painting of the wetlands by Christopher Meadows was prophetic. This painting will become valuable now that Christopher has won the $20,000 Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize (with another painting), securing a place for him as one of South Australia’s finest artists. The editor of MLL certainly knows good art when she spots it! - Henry Lally, art critic Civic Care I'm with Robyn on litter blight (MLL/July). I hate to see rubbish in our beautiful environment. There are those who throw it, usually kids, and those who clean it, so there may be another way to come at this problem, in addition to education of the litterbugs. When you go walking take a pickup stick and an old bag and clean up as you go. Never come home without at least 3 bits of rubbish for the bin, more if you can. As Robyn said, it's hard to identify the litter-heads, but we can all boost our civic care. - Nikola Sulley Spruce up needed Kassy's comment in MLL/June told us why she is moving out of Mawson Lakes and I totally agree with her. I am a long-time resident and I too am disgusted at the condition of our suburb. I have spoken out about the filthy streets, the neglect of gardens, the rubbish and the bird droppings around the place, particularly in the eating streets. I compare the dirty council-managed areas to the university grounds which are clean and well-kept. Mawson Lakes needs sprucing up. - Tania King Capital Street Central Plaza The Central Plaza retail and student housing project — now known as Capital St Shopping Centre — was partly-completed late last year following the opening of Romeo’s Foodland. The upstairs section of the three-storey plaza, which will offer 80 two-storey townhouses for students with more than 200 beds in shared rooms was sold off by the developer in December. A new developer has taken over construction and the project is expected to be ready for students this year. - The Messenger

Overdevelopment The bulk of Mawson Lakes problems stem from the plethora of apartments that have been thrust upon us with scant regard to good planning principles. This has been fuelled by both state and local governments looking to maximise bang for their buck in infrastructure expenditure plus rates and levy income. Where previously a 700m block would be lucky to house 2 dwellings they can now get 22 dwellings on the same space. Small apartments that cater for 90% of renters don’t do anything to enhance the liveability of any suburb. Tallest building in the north A 10-story project in Mawson Lakes on Elder Drive will become the tallest building in the northern suburbs if it wins planning permission from the State Commission Assessment Panel. This building will offer 26 apartments for retirees plus aged care accommodation and yet another medical centre. Residents have opposed the construction on the grounds it is an overdevelopment for the site, it is too tall for the area, is too close to Parafield Airport, will lead to further traffic congestion on roads that are already too narrow, increase our parking problems and it is inconsistent with the character of existing buildings. Despite agreeing that the height, bulk and scale of the building are issues, Salisbury Council has granted its consent. - Concerned residents.
Danger Zones Pity the poor pilot whose wings clipped powerlines as he flew over Mawson Lakes on approach to Parafield. This is what happens when airfields are hedged in with urban development. Planes need plenty of safe space, above and below. Building high-rise apartments, shops, retail, services, petrol stations, and busy roads on the boundary of an airfield is asking for disaster. I heard that terrible crash that resulted in more than 700 properties losing power when the lines came down and Elder Smith Road was closed to traffic. I fear it could have been a lot worse. - Malcolm Motley Good tradespeople We bought a house in Mawson Lakes in need of repair. In our letterbox was a copy of Mawson Lakes Living so my wife rang local trades people for air conditioning service, painting, plumbing and oven repairs. In each case the service was quick and the job well done and now we recommend these operators everywhere we go. My wife found a hairdresser in the mag she really likes (Artique) and later on I looked for a local accountant. The only thing missing is a dog groomer. Our dog needs a hair cut too. Can MLL do something about this? - Manish Vargese Photography achievement Congratulations to Melissa Alagich from Mawson Lakes for winning the title of South Australian Professional Newborn Photographer of the Year 2018 presented by Australian Institute of Professional Photography. All four of her entries in the newborn category received silver awards. Melissa specialises in newborn, family and maternity photography. You can see her sweet portraits at www.melissaalagich.com.au Daffodil Day, Friday 24 August Mawson Lakes Lions Club will be collecting donations and selling fresh daffodils at the ML Interchange on Friday 24 August from 6am- noon in support of the Cancer Council.
In 1988, I made a very important decision in my life: to stand for a position on Salisbury Council so that I could represent my community and achieve great things on its behalf. It has been 30 years since this milestone and since then I have held lead positions on council committees, been elected to deputy mayor, elected to mayor and reelected time and time again. I have worked incredibly hard for this community and all the wonderful people and businesses who call it home. I have made it my unwavering priority to make the City of Salisbury the best place to live, work and play, and to make sure my residents have the best quality of life, no matter who they are or what they do. I have helped attract many businesses, industries and investors to the City of Salisbury – both nationally and internationally, and continued to work with them to this day to make sure they succeed. On Monday, June 11, all of this hard work was recognised when I received an Order of Australia Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. I do what I do because I love this city, its people, businesses, community groups and organisations. I do it because I want to see the City of Salisbury thrive, to be the best place to live, work and play. I don’t do it to receive awards. But in saying that, I am incredibly humbled, honoured and grateful to have received this medal. How amazing. Lastly, I want to say thank you to each and every one of you for allowing me to be Mayor of this wonderful city, to lobby on your behalf and to achieve many great things for the north. Best Dressed Awards
TWO FREE HARD WASTE COLLECTIONS PER YEAR In response to resident’s requests I have advocated at council for significant positive changes to how we do hard waste collections. I am pleased to advise that Council is now offering residents two FREE collection services to dispose of hard waste. These collections will be oncall which I hope will mean that residents including renters will be able to utilise these rather than considering and committing illegal dumping – which attracts a heavy fine and damages the community. You can also send an email to NAWMA at admin@nawma.sa.gov.au. I’m organising another clean up in Mawson Lakes on Sunday September 16. Parking at Dog Park In response to resident’s concerns to me about a lack of car parking at the Mawson Lakes Dog Park I am pleased to report that Council is providing parking spaces off Park Way.
COUNCIL REPORT
I am your elected representative on Council and I live in Mawson Lakes. I spend a lot of time out’n’about delivering the community magazine, talking to residents and walking along the pathways. As I go, I notice things that need doing, and all the things that Council has done during the year that I have been your voice on Council. I strive to make sure that ratepayers’ money is put to good use. During my time on Council I’m happy to report that the Dry Creek north bank trail has been resealed to Park Way. Soon the trail will be resealed along the south bank and then to Montague Rd. The river has been cleared of excess vegetation and the old wooden bridges that were rotting have been replaced by sturdy steel bridges, at huge cost. Some months ago residents asked me if Council could install outdoor fitness equipment along the linear trail. I put this motion to Council and the equipment is now in good use and you will see that new benches and picnic tables are along the linear walking trail for all to enjoy.

The new ramps up to the bridge at Elder Smith Rd are providing better access across the suburb. Security and safety are paramount and next year more CCTV cameras will be installed in Mawson Central. If you have ideas or concerns, please contact me so I can take them to Council on your behalf.

Taking to the Skies In just 13 weeks in the Aviation Program at UniSA a student can be flying a plane through the skies above Mawson Lakes. But, before you get edgy, all this happens on a computer simulator in a laboratory on the Mawson Lakes campus in the School of Engineering. Dr Douglas Drury, senior lecturer with 35 years of aviation experience, said the degree course at Mawson Lakes is in the top tier of aviation education in Australia. "We are well positioned by having Parafield Airport next door, good clear weather for flying and lots of flat land." "The demand for aviation professionals in the Pacific Rim and the Middle East is increasing and I am focussed on training people who are ready to step straight into jobs. It’s a large industry with many openings for pilots, flight operations, ground services, traffic control and airport management."
UniSA has more than 500 students enrolled in aviation - 30 pecent are women who Dr Drury said display good analytical skills and now have the confidence to enter previously male-dominated fields. About 20 percent are international students.

Resident Profile: Goanna
This beautiful resident of Mawson Lakes is a goanna, a member of the lizard family. She is a reptile known as a Sand Monitor, and although she has a snake-like appearance she is not a snake. She was photographed on the rocks along Dry Creek where she has a home built to protect her from the weather and from predators such as cats, foxes and dogs. Sand Monitors are relentless foragers. They are diurnal, meaning most of their activities take place during the day. Anything smaller than itself will be eagerly devoured. The diets of hatchlings and juveniles consist mostly of insects and small lizards, whereas adult monitors prey on mice, small birds, large insects, small lizards and snakes. They are seemingly immune to snake venom and will kill and eat even the most venomous species.

Orthoses are specialised inserts worn in shoes. They are designed to improve foot alignment, function and comfort. Orthoses are customised in order to address particular problems, taking into account an individual's foot structure, footwear and lifestyle factors. Devices are designed to provide long term solutions to foot pain to allow you to reach your exercise goals. Some of the conditions which respond well to orthotics include things such as heel pain, bunion joint pain, Achilles tendonitis, neuromas, ankle sprains and pain, shin splints and stress fractures in the feet. Orthoses are also used to offload areas of callus to improve foot comfort and prevent ulceration. The process of providing orthoses involves a foot and leg assessment including measuring joint range of motion and muscle strength, review of current footwear and extensive history of foot pain, activity and goals. Following this we take an impression of the foot which is sent to a laboratory to have the orthoses manufactured according to your individual needs. Not only is this fountain in the university grounds near the university sports centre beautiful, it plays an important role in aerating water that flows through the university grounds and the golf course wetlands.
A walk around Sir Douglas Mawson Lake will reveal this fountain that cleans and aerates water as it moves between an upper lake and the main lake down a series of steps. See cover photo.
The Cascades The Cascades gets its name from the distinctive fountain of three blocks that has water gently cascading over its edges.

Beautiful Garden Award Native Garden
A garden at 28 Brookside Drive is work in progress for Steph Sexton who moved into the house two years ago. She is in the process of transforming her patch by experimenting with natives.
"I love the colours, form and shape of natives, particularly the grey greens. The subtle flowers in reds, purples and yellows come as quite a surprise." Natives like sandy soil that drains freely so the first thing Steph did was put down a load of soil low in phosphorus, then a weed mat and a topping of bark chips as mulch. Silky Emu Bush (Eremophila Nivea) is a striking sun-loving shrub with masses of purple flowers.

Plants in the west facing garden love the site and small stock is growing with vigour. "I’m trying different varieties to see what is best suited. I've lost some and others have surprised me." I’ll have a puppaccino

Now what will I have for lunch today? Will it be the Hound Burger or the Mutt Balls? I’m sitting at a cafe in Norwood where they have a Pooch Menu. I decide to order a puppaccino sprinkled with carob, accompanied by a peanut butter biscuit. It’s yummy alright, but the puppachino which is warm lactose free milk, is so large (see photo) that I share it with a labrador at a neighbouring table. He tells me he comes here often; it's his favourite outing on a Sunday. While his pet parents tuck into hamburgers and chips he gets chicken jerky ($3.50) and a K-9 smoothy ($4.50). Filtered water is free. The popularity of dog-friendly cafes is spreading across Adelaide creating a new breed of diners, and I'm one of them. Last weekend I was sauntering down the high street of Semaphore when I saw a signboard placed strategically at dogo level that said Doggy icecream - the paw-fect way to treat your pooch. Fidos were emerging with doggie ice creams in their jaws made from natural yoghurt, peanut butter, banana and other fruits. I'm always on the lookout for a treat so I steered Mummy closer and she bought me a doggie ice-cream with fresh strawberries, of course she wanted her share, then we went up the road to the local yiros cafe and I tucked into a doggie dinner of plain lamb offcuts. Delicious! No wonder pet-friendly cafes are booming when they cater so creatively for humans and their best friends.
