On the business scene, Mawson Lakes did well in the 2012 Messenger Business Awards. Most of the winning businesses advertise in Living so I have put a pointer on their ads this month so you will know who they are and you can extend your personal congratulations.

As I visit people and places in Mawson Lakes for interviews and photographs I am constantly reminded what an exciting, goahead place it is with a deep intellectual core, entrepreneurial businesses, good schools and an expanding residential population.

Official opening of architectural masterpiece at Mawson Lakes

The new scientific hub at the Mawson Lakes Campus of UniSA received the prestigious 2012 Award For Public Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects SA. The Materials and Minerals Science Building and The Plasso were described by the jury as, “an excellent resolution of a complex brief focussed on innovative research and teaching with excellent connection between the campus and the broader local community.”

Speaking at the official opening of the building, affectionately named M2, Principal with John Wardle Architects, Stefan Mee, said the building is designed to be community friendly. “The pre-cast concrete has many shapes and angles, and this, combined with natural materials and timber, is a work of art that is an extension of the street and the surrounding landscape. It is accessible to all.”

A key feature of the building is ten purposebuilt laboratories with natural light located across three levels which have glass frontages so that work undertaken is on show, offering inspiration and engagement for students.

The building will be open to the public during the Festival of Innovation (see page 5). Ed.

One thing missing - I have just moved back to Adelaide after 35 years away and discovered Mawson Lakes. What a treasure it is: but there’s one thing missing. Where is the Post Office? Surely a suburb with 23,000 people can support a Post Office.

Electricity supply for ML - Last year Mawson Lakes suffered blackouts when the main electrical sub-station failed. The sub-station is located near the corner of Levels Rd and Cross Keys Rd in the industrial area. Over winter, ETSA has been laying backup electrical supply cables that bypass the main sub-station and connect power directly to the smaller power distribution boxes along Mawson Lakes Boulevard. This explains the big holes in the ground around the Peppercorns and along The Boulevard.

Noise on the lake - I live close to Shoalhaven Lake and we have a problem with noise from remote control model speedboats that run up and down the lake with a high pitched sound, sometimes as late as 1am and 4am, making it impossible to sleep. If you are experiencing the same annoyance please ring the Council and report the problem. Helen

Satellite Earth Station at Mawson Lakes

Drive along Park Way in Technology Park and you will see large white satellite dishes pointing towards space. This is an earth station established in Mawson Lakes by NewSat, Australia’s largest satellite communications company.

The satellite dishes are part of NewSat’s southern network that delivers internet, voice, data and video around the world.

The Mawson Lakes teleport has 12 dishes ranging in size from 2.4 metres to 13 metres. The biggest one tracks and commands satellites in space that are 35,000 kilometres away. Others receive signals from geostationary satellites that orbit the equator.

Michael Kenneally, Vice-President of Satellite Strategy, told Living that emerging digital applications lend themselves to satellite communication. “We are entering a new age of communication where we need sophisticated equipment and highly skilled engineers to meet demands for speed and high-powered coverage.”

NewSat’s customers include small and large businesses particularly in the mining industry and in oil and offshore gas projects. The company also provides satellite communication to Australian and US Defence Force personnel in the field. A soldier in a hostile environment, far from home and hundreds of kilometres from any conventional communications infrastructure can connect

to anywhere in the world via a satellite antenna. It’s quite likely that an engineer working in the Mawson Lakes teleport will ensure the message reaches its destination.

Mawson Lakes was selected for the earth station because it is ideally suited to receive signals from a large range of satellites. Geographically it has a flat landscape and clear skies, with no tall buildings to obstruct transmissions. It is situated in a stable and supportive political environment and the national resources boom has the potential to make South Australia the focal point for satellite communications.

As a world-class technology industry, the strategic alliances that NewSat has developed with UniSA at Mawson Lakes and the Defence Teaming Centre in Technology Park are important drawcards of the suburb.

The company is expanding rapidly as demand increases. “At Mawson Lakes we have room to grow and I expect the team of engineers will double in the next few years,” said Mr Kenneally.

In 2014, NewSat plans to launch its own multi-million dollar commercial satellite called Jabiru (after an Australian native bird) which will provide its customers with more coverage and higher network speeds.

NewSat is a world leader in space communications, and Mawson Lakes is a vital link in its strategy. Ed.

Kaitlyn’s Wish

Raising $50,000 is a big challenge, but when it’s money that could change a little girl’s life, everybody is willing to give a little.

That’s what Jean and Bob Wigley are finding as they help raise money through public outreach to send their granddaughter Kaitlyn to America in December for a lifechanging operation.

Kaitlyn (5) was born with cerebral palsy which affects the lower half of her body so that she is unable to walk without a frame or walking sticks. It is anticipated that the operation will stop the cause of the spasticity in her spine.

Bob and Jean have lived in Mawson Lakes for 8 years. They ran their business Bob Wigley Home Loans in Goodall Parade before retiring. Their son Craig and his business partner continue to run Rebbeck Wigley Home Loans.

“Kaitlyn is such a determined little girl,” said Jean. “She has started school and her wish is to do everything the other children do. We hope this operation will give her the ability to walk unaided and enjoy her childhood.”

Training international leaders for business and industry

There are 900 international students on the UniSA Mawson Lakes campus and you will see many of them on duty at the Festival of Innovation at the University’s Open Day on 13 September. This event is open to all and has many interesting displays and talks for the public.

Gail Jackman, the university’s industry relations manager, arranges work placements for students, particularly in engineering. She says that engineering underpins a range of careers including computer systems, electrical and mechatronics, defence, mining, electronics and communications, the design of sustainable systems for energy production, the design of green buildings, industrial development and water management. “In time, many of these young people will become leaders of business and industry,” said Gail.

“International students are keen to engage with the community, work on local projects and talk to local people,” said Gail who urges residents to

be friendly to international students who are a long way from home without their families.

Desmond Biju from Malaysia is studying advanced mechanical engineering. He loves robotics and he is a community-minded young man who is a volunteer English Language and Literacy Tutor at the City of Salisbury. Ed.

When Sarah Wiegold established her new business Gold’s Accounting in Mawson Lakes this year she asked her sister Marina Champion, Director of New Heights Business Solutions to assist her. Together they work from an office in Capital Street.

Sarah who specialises in income tax and gst, was formerly a partner in an accounting firm in Salisbury but when the company grew very big she decided to open her own business where she could offer personalised service and have the flexibility to visit her clients in the workplace.

YOLO – Should we be concerned?

You may have heard the term ‘YOLO’, an acronym for ‘You Only Live Once’. This buzz word is creating a big impact in the lives of teenagers worldwide. The word has replaced ‘carpe diem’ (meaning seize the day in Latin). When I first heard YOLO, I thought it was great. Having suffered from depression and anxiety from a very young age, motivational quotes can be a good tool for me to try: something new to take me out of my comfort zone. Before I’d even heard of YOLO I had often said “seize the day” to myself when I needed a little push.

Up until not long ago I saw no issue with this word, and thought it would just be another word fad like LOL, BRB, and OMG. However, I was watching the news one night, and was shocked to discover that adolescents as young as 13 had been using this word as a free pass to let themselves go wild. There were reports of young people, girls in particular, going out and getting drunk, taking compromising pictures of themselves and others, and other worse acts, yet they saw nothing wrong with it because hey, YOLO!

I think YOLO can be a really motivating phrase, however if young people do bad things because they perceive they only live once therefore they can do whatever they like, the meaning is being abused and the essence of YOLO is lost. Here are some ways I can think of to demonstrate the positive aspects of YOLO:

 Start a new activity that you never would have thought of doing before.

 Buy yourself something new just because you can.

 Surround yourself with people that bring you joy, and don’t let negative people influence you.

Rug Sleepover

A rug brings colour and warmth to a room but when buying a rug it can be hard to decide if the rug you see in the shop will suit your home. Happy Rugs offers a special customer deal that allows you to take the rug home and try it before you buy it.

What plant is that?

Lemon Tree

The lemon tree is groaning under knobbly yellow fruit at this time of year. When my neighbour Bridget gave me a bag of lemons from her backyard tree I got out my cookbook and put them to good use by making lemon chicken, home-made lemon cordial, lemon pudding and my favourite lemon slice (see recipe below).

The most common varieties of lemon trees grown in Australia are Lisbon, Eureka and Meyer. The lemon season is from April to October. Citrus trees need lots of water from spring until autumn. Keep them happy and healthy and full of fruit by adding a handful of fertiliser per square metre once a season and covering with mulch.

For a fruit that is rarely eaten whole, the lemon is amazingly versatile. Margaret Fulton says of lemon juice and rind that “both are as indispensable as salt and pepper”, and it is not hard to see why.

RECIPE: Lemon Slice

Ingredients:

Base

125g butter melted

1 3/4 cups plain flour

3/4 cup caster sugar

Lemon filling

4 eggs lightly beaten

1/3 cup plain flour

1 1/3 cups caster sugar

1 cup lemon juice

To make:

1 Preheat oven to 1800 C

2 Make base by combining butter, flour and sugar.

3 Press into a slice tin lined with baking paper.

4 Bake for 15-20 mins until golden. Cool slightly.

The outer part of the peel contains the essential oil that makes lemon zest so flavoursome in cooking. Lemon oil can also be used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. Lemon peel can be candied and eaten as a sweet. The pith - the white layer around the flesh - contains pectin, necessary for the setting of jams and marmalades. Whole lemons can be preserved in brine or oil then used in savoury dishes. Lemon juice is used to preserve colour in other fruits, to flavour dressings, sauces and icings and, of course, as a flavour boost for fish.

The lemon, like its citrus cousins, is packed with Vitamin C. Plant a lemon tree today. Ed.

5 Prepare filling by whisking well together eggs, flour, sugar and juice.

6 Pour filling over base and bake 15 to 20mins until just set and slightly golden. Stand for 2 hours, then dust with icing sugar to serve.

The new cafe on the block is a small, casual and friendly place to just hang out and enjoy the day as it passes by on Metro Parade.

After meeting the owner Denise at the Photographic Exhibition where she was supplying the catering, and hearing how everything in this place is made ‘In House’, I thought it best to test out the feast on offer. All-day breakfast, toasted foccacias, turkish bread and open grills make this little place very appetizing. The coffee (long black) was very good and helped kick start the day perfectly. I had the toasted roast chicken foccacia with homemade sweet chilli mayo, cheese, avocado and mixed lettuce. Delicious fresh bread and ingredients. All in all, I would definitely recommend this place to any local looking for a nice easy lunch or late breakfast. Enjoy!

My favourite dish is lamb’s fry and bacon and the best place to get it in Adelaide is Cross Keys Hotel on a Tuesday night. Thin slices of tender, thinly-sliced liver are always perfectly cooked and served with dark gravy for only $9.90. If you don’t like lamb’s fry there’s a range of other dishes at good prices. Specials change daily. A salad bar caters for every taste and warm bread rolls are served in a big basket. Dessert is usually $5. The restaurant is cheap and cheerful and perfect when you want a break from cooking. At Cross Keys Hotel expect to get a nourishing but inexpensive meal in quick time. Plenty of parking. Ed

Do you call Woolworths ‘Woolies’ and an Australian an “Aussie”?

Social researcher and author of the new book ‘Word Up’ says that Australians are masters at shortening words to create a language that moves with the times.

Shortening a name is one way Australians show their endearment, and some of our favourite brands and organisations have been lucky enough to score their own word– a movement that these organisations have been quick to embrace. Woolworths is called “Woolies” which is now used on many of its marketing materials (“My Woolies”). “Maccas” (McDonalds) is a uniquely Australian way of referring to the fast food giant, while The Salvation Army has wholeheartedly embraced the title “Salvos” with their well known strapline “thank God for the Salvos”. Similarly, The St Vincent De Paul Society is more commonly known as “Vinnies”.

Other examples of shortened words are: Arvo, Postie, Footy, Snags, Vegies, G’day, Sunnies, Sparkies, Cozzies, and Servo. Ed.

Council Corner

This is a quarterly article where we will discuss issues affecting the parks and reserves of Mawson Lakes and other important landscape issues.

Broadleaf weed control is conducted annually by City of Salisbury contractors for all reserves within Mawson Lakes. This year, broadleaf spraying commenced in July and will continue through August and perhaps even September depending on the weather, as the wet weather is a major factor in determining the completion time. Follow-up spraying may be required on some or all reserves depending on success rates.

Reserves which have already been completed for broadleaf weed control (at the time of submitting this information for the publication) include:

Beating Boredom by Nigella

Don’t you hate being left at home alone - not much to do, nobody to talk to and nothing to fill your mind. It can get pretty lonely and boring.

Some of my buddies occupy the lonely hours digging holes in the garden, practising escape manoeuvres, barking all day just for company, licking and chewing themselves or chasing their tails.

I reckon the best boredom buster is a long walk with a vigorous game of sticks and balls. I also like to jump in the car when mummy goes on errands. And I quite like to sit on my verge and watch the passing parade of people and dogs.

When dog-friendly people come to visit I get excited, like the day the author Coralie Creevey came to talk about her new books ‘Tess’ and ‘What’s Wrong With Tess’, a book about a playful puppy and the mischief she gets up to.

This stimulated mummy and me to think about dog happiness and we decided to create a fun day at Mawson Lakes, just for dogs.

Mummy mentioned this to some dog-loving friends and before you know it we had a planning committee and a program for Dogs Day Out – see flyer opposite.

Everybody is invited to Dogs Day Out. Wear your best collar and a short lead and bring your family. You’re going to love this party.

There will be dogs doing all sorts of enjoyable things to show how they keep active. Coralie Creevey is bringing her Tess books and there will be free food for dogs, dancing dogs, and working dogs showing us what they do. There will be dog walks around ML, a pupcake competition, doggie music, dog washes, doggie face painting by the brillaint artist Toni Anne, competitions and lots of fun activities for the whole family.

When you’ve spent your energy, stop by the doggie massage tent for a relaxing rub.

Say hi to Dr Brendan and be assured there will be no vet jabs on this fun day.

Dogs of the month in ML

It has been a good year for fleas in South Australia. The increased rainfall has improved conditions for flea development, and this, along with central heating, means that winter does not slow them down much. As a result, flea numbers are higher this year than I have seen for a long time.

Fleas spend most of their life cycle in the environment, with only the adults living on our pets. Modern flea products kill the adult fleas quickly, and can reduce the environmental numbers via the flea larvae eating skin cells shed by the pet into their bedding etc. There is no shame in a dog picking up fleas, especially this year (my dog and cats have suffered too!), but prevention is better (and easier) than cure. With warmer weather on its way, there is no better time to start protecting your family. Come in and ask our nurses about the best treatments for your pet.

Playing Bridge

When Shirley Rosenthall, her daughter Lesley and friend Berry Van Vuuren moved to Mawson Lakes last year from South Africa (via Auckland) they brought with them a love of Bridge, a card game played with groups of four people.

The family plays on Wednesday nights at their home and they are looking for other people who enjoy the card game to join them. They are flexible about time and place.

“Bridge is a good way to keep mentally alert, no matter what your age,” said Shirley (84) who has travelled the world meeting people through bridge games.

“Wherever you go, Bridge is an open sesame,” she said. “It’s the most popular card game in the world and it offers a wonderful way to meet new people and enjoy their company in a meaningful way.”

The Verge

The strip of land between the kerb and your property boundary is known as the VERGE. It is owned by Council. Property owners can develop their verge areas, provided they maintain pedestrian access along the verge. Pedestrians should not be forced to walk on the roadway, whether or not a footpath exists. Vehicles should never block the verge. It is illegal to park your car on the verge or across the footpath. Dumping your rubbish there is also illegal. Fines apply.

The following verge treatments are permitted pending Council approval: mulch, rubble/ gravel, low plants (maximum 500mm height), permeable paving, turf and synthetic turf. To develop your verge you need to lodge an application with Council using the Verge Development Application Form. Tenants cannot do this, only property owners.

The origami talking dog is easy to make. You’ll need a marker to draw the eyes, nose and tongue. Then give your dog a name.

1. Start with your paper white side up.Fold in half then open.

2. Fold the top corner down to the bottom corner.

3. Fold the two top corners down to the points shown.

4. Fold the uppermost layer of the bottom corner up a little way.

5. Fold this layer up again, from the top of the triangle as shown.

6. Add eyes and a nose to the dog’s face. If you like you can even add a tongue!
