SUMMER INTERSESSION PROGRAMS Maryknoll School is pleased to announce the offerings of our summer intersession program.

This program covers the interim period between the end of the summer school session until the beginning of the new school year. Program dates, times and age range of participants vary per program

END OF SUMMER BASH Dates: July 18-29

Time: 7:45 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Grades: K-6 Cost: $1,000.00

Our End of Summer Bash is a summer fun, non-academic, all-day care program. Students will participate in cooking, arts and crafts, sports and games, field trips and more! *Cost includes all activity supplies, field trip fees and an afternoon snack.

SPARTAN BASKETBALL CAMP Dates: July 18-20

Time: 8:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Grades: 4-8 Cost: $180.00

Spartan basketball is on the rise! Join our Spartan coaching staff this summer to enhance your basketball skills. This camp is open to both boys and girls, of all basketball levels.

Campers will work on fundamental skills, as well as advanced drills, and team play.

Welcome to the new, exciting world of S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). Both of our one-week camps are run by Bricks4Kidz and will provide every student with exciting, new, and fun “hands-on” activities and a daily take home craft. A morning daily snack and drink is provided for all camps. Each camper will also receive a mini-figure that they will use daily and then get to take home at the end of the week. Childcare after camp (12:00pm-5:30pm) is also available for an additional charge.

S.T.E.M ADVENTURE CAMP COURSE DESCRIPTIONS- GRADES 1-3 Jurassic Brick Land Camp (July 18-22)

Are you ready for the adventure of a lifetime? Put on your hiking boots and camouflage...you’re about to enter Jurassic Brick Land! Campers will build a world that comes to life with gentle Brontosaurus, ferocious Velociraptor, terrifying T.Rex, and more. We’ll learn about amazing dinosaurs that lived during the Jurassic period, and other extinct, prehistoric animals that roamed the earth and swam the seas during that era and millions of years later. Show us your building skills using our specialized project kits! Come learn, build and play at Jurassic Brick Land camp!

Ninja Spinning Camp (July 25-29)

Come play with all the new LEGO® Board Games & Ninjago characters ...In addition to playing with Ninjago Ninjas & all the fun LEGO® board games, we will be tapping into our imagination and discovering our creativity as we attempt to create anything related to games out of LEGO® Bricks.

For example, we will make replicas of game boards like tic-tac-toe, famous video game characters & more...What game can you come up with to make a replica of...or come up with your own game?

S.T.E.M ADVENTURE CAMP COURSE DESCRIPTIONS- GRADES 4-6

Classic Arcade Brick Adventure Camp and Scratch Coding (July 18-22)

Jump into the world of classic arcade and video games! Eat flashing dots, collect coins and rings, avoid getting smashed by enemies…there are so many obstacles to overcome and levels to beat!

People today have games with graphic animations and three-dimensional capabilities. Let’s take it back to when it all started, the 1980’s! That was the time of 8-bit and later 16-bit technology, which gave these old games their classic appearance. Campers will build the famous plumber brothers, a Brick Eater, a jumping hedgehog, alien invaders, and more!

Bricks4kidz® will use SCRATCH coding (developed by MIT) to teach students how to create their very own interactive games, digital art and animated short stories. They will develop an understanding of how video games are made and develop their problem-solving skills as they create their own fun video games and short stories.

BRICK City Engineers and 3-D Virtual LEGO Building (July 25-29)

Let’s build a CITY! There are many different types of engineering jobs, and building is one of the most fun! What would a city be without the architects and engineers who come up with the ideas, plans and building skills to make it all come together? Campers will put their engineering and architecture skills to work as they build city themed models using LEGO® Bricks. The sky’s the limit when campers are challenged to use their own ideas and skills to build a skyscraper taller than their heads! They’ll have a blast using custom-built cars to move the people of the city all around town – brick by brick! What an accomplishment to be able to proudly exclaim “We built this BRICK City!”

HOW TO REGISTER 1. Summer Intersession Registration Please complete the 2022 Summer Intersession registration form.

Complete a separate form for each student (photocopies of registration forms are acceptable).

2. Registration Deadline Deadline for registration in the Maryknoll Intersession Program is April 29, 2022.

Early registration is recommended as these programs fill quickly. Registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Maryknoll School reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient enrollment. Confirmations will be mailed home by May 18, 2022. Student schedule’s will be mailed home early July. (Students who register after April 29, 2022, will be charged a late fee of $40.00 per student, and will be registered on space available basis only).

3. Changes in Registration Any change in a student’s summer registration after April 29, 2022, will incur a $40 administration fee. This fee will only be waived if the change in registration is initiated by Maryknoll School, or any of its faculty and/or staff, with the final approval of the coordinator.

4. Withdraw and Refund Policy For students who withdraw on or before April 29, 2022, 50% of program costs, per program, per student is non-refundable. No tuition refund will be given for withdraws after April 29, 2022. For any missed class due to COVID-19 no refunds will be issued.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2022 GRADE SCHOOL DIVISION (GRADES K-8) The Maryknoll Grade School Summer Program offers students, kindergarten through grade eight, a variety of classes for review, remediation, acceleration and enrichment.

DATES Summer School will begin on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, and will end on Friday, July 15, 2022. There will be no school on Friday, June 10 (Kamehameha Day), Monday June 20 (Juneteenth) and Monday, July 4 (Independence Day) due to school observed holidays.

COVID PROTOCOLS AND PROCEDURES Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, strict campus protocols and procedures will be in place for the safety and well-being of all students, faculty and staff on school grounds. Maryknoll continues to collaborate with the State of Hawaii Department of Health, these protocols may change depending on the local government and CDC recommendations. Please note that the following summer program protocols and procedures will be in effect during all program hours: ● Closed Campus: NO visitors will be allowed on campus or in any classroom. However, families are allowed to drop off items at the Extended Learning Office with prior notice. Please call the office at 808-952-7340 if you have any questions or need assistance (dropping off items, picking up students, etc.)

● Masks/Face Coverings: Masks/face coverings will be mandatory at all times on campus.

Vented face masks are not allowed. CDC highly recommends use of disposable surgical masks, KN 95, KF 94 masks.

PICK-UP AND DROP-OFF Please use the Dole Street driveway ONLY, (assistance will be available in the driveway area). Left turns are illegal at ALL times into the driveway area.

ATTENDANCE Regular and punctual attendance is required. If a student will be absent from Summer School , a parent should contact the Office of Extended Learning by 7:30 a.m. that morning (Grade School: 952-7340 or extendedlearning@maryknollschoo.org). If a student is absent from school, a written explanation signed by the parent must be presented to the instructor upon returning to school. If a note is not presented, it is considered an unexcused absence and teachers are not required to give make-up work or tests.

STUDENTS’ SAFETY Students should not arrive on campus any earlier than 7:00 a.m. All students are expected to be picked up from school upon the completion and dismissal of their last scheduled class. Loitering on campus will not be permitted. Maryknoll School will not accept responsibility for unattended children before or after their scheduled classes. ALL students on campus must be enrolled in a summer school course.

DRESS STANDARDS Informal dress standards will be appropriate for Summer School. Shorts and slippers in good appearance are acceptable. Students in sports and recreation courses are required to wear athletic shoes. Neatness, cleanliness and good taste are qualities expected of Summer School students.

CONDUCT Students are expected to maintain normal, acceptable standards of conduct based on respect for teachers, students, and property. Individuals who do not conduct themselves in an appropriate manner should expect strong disciplinary action, including the possibility of suspension or in extreme cases, expulsion.

GRADE REPORTS Final grades (academic classes only) for all students will be distributed to students on the last day of summer session, July 15, 2022. Non-Maryknoll students are responsible to forward summer school report cards to their home schools (if necessary). Students not present for report distribution will need to pick-up at the Office of Extended Learning, no later than Friday, July 22, 2022. There will be NO mailing of grade reports.

CLASS SUPPLIES Please note that some classes may require additional classroom supplies. Supply lists will be sent home on the first day of classes. For those students registering for academic classes, please have your child report to class with basic school supplies (pencil, pen, paper, folder).

3. Grade Level Pods Students in grades 1-8 will be registering for classes based on our new pod schedule. Each grade level will have an Academic POD (Math/Language arts) and an Exploratory POD (Science, Robotics, Sports, Technology). Exploratory POD subject matter will vary by grade level. Each POD schedule is a four hour block. Students can register for only ONE grade level POD. 4. GRADE SCHOOL COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FIRST STEPS Grade: Kindergarten

Time: 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Tuition: $1,000.00

This program is designed to provide the children with experiences in individual and group activities to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and math readiness, and independent work. The students will begin handwriting of single phonograms and numbers (1-10), using proper pencil grip.

MANDARIN IMMERSION Grade: K Grades: 1-2

Time: 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Time: 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

This dual language program is designed to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and math readiness both in Mandarin and English. Children will be immersed in Mandarin for 2 hours and English for 2 hours. Mathematics will be taught in Mandarin and Language Arts in English.

ACADEMIC PODS ACADEMIC PODS Grades: 1-5

Times: 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.

Tuition: $1,000.00

Elementary level academic PODS will consist of a two-hour block of language arts and a two-hour block of mathematics.

Language Arts: Through individual, small group and whole- class activities, the skills of reading and writing will be practiced and developed. English proficiency commensurate with grade level is expected of all students.

Math: Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects, and other activities. Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed.

ACADEMIC PODS Grades: 6-8

Times: 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Middle level academic PODS will consist of a two-hour literature and writing block and a two-hour block of mathematics (Grade 6-7) or Pre-Algebra (Grade 8).

Literature and Writing (Grades 6-8): This course is designed to strengthen the reading and writing skills of the middle school student. Using a literature-based curriculum, students will engage in daily reading and writing activities through the use of different genres. *This course is reading and writing intensive.

Mathematics (Grades 6-7): Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects, and other activities.

Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed.

Algebra Preview (Grade 8): Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects and other activities.

Exploratory PODS will consist of 3, one-hour 15 minute classes. POD daily schedules will consist of a rotation of enrichment courses (see individual course descriptions below). Each grade level’s Exploratory POD courses are as follows: Grades 1-3: Court Sports, Future Engineers, Robotics for Young Thinkers Grades 4-5: Future Engineers, Hoop It Up, STEAM-Powered Spartans Grades 6-8: Creative Coding, DJ Mixing Master, Kids can Cook

EXPLORATORY POD COURSE DESCRIPTIONS COURT SPORTS Are you ready for some indoor court fun! Court Sports will provide the basic skills and knowledge of indoor recreational sports. Students will participate in team sports such as indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football, and more.

CREATIVE CODING Students will use SCRATCH coding (developed by MIT) and a 3D desktop application to create their very own interactive games, digital art and animated short stories. They will develop an understanding of how video games are made and develop their problem-solving skills as they create their own fun video games and short stories. Each project progressively teaches more advanced capabilities within the video game design software. Students will be proud and excited to play their very own completed video games. They will learn how to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically.

DJ MIXING MASTER CLASS Students will learn the technique of DJ mixing, the history of the art form, how to set up their gear, to program a complete master mix, and the skill of DJ scratching. This Master Class is instructed by award winning DJ/Entertainer Kutmaster Spaz now known as Mr. Bulatao. Back in 2000 Mr. Bulatao started the world’s first Scratch DJ school for anyone wanting to learn the art form. You do not need to know how to play an instrument nor have any type of musical background to be in this class. You just need a love for music, a willingness to learn, and a spirit to have fun!

FUTURE ENGINNERS Tap into your child’s potential by encouraging their curiosity and creativity with Bricks 4 Kidz®. Students will learn and grow with our fun-filled model plans! Our plans, designed by engineers and architects, provide an engaging platform to explore principles of engineering, architecture, physics and more. Students will develop problem solving, critical thinking skills and learn how to code their models and watch them come to life!

HOOP IT UP This course will provide students with basic skills and the concept of teamwork in the sport of basketball. This integrated course will use a variety of activities to teach fundamentals, which will allow each student to experience game situations, with equal amounts of playing time.

Boys and girls will be grouped according to age and ability levels.

KIDS CAN COOK A fun summer class where students learn essential cooking techniques and work alongside their peers to gain and develop new culinary skills. Students will build on these each week, starting with basic kitchen safety and ending with long-lasting proficiency through practicing counting, measuring, reading, and time tracking all while making delicious electric skillet dishes. Taught by Kelly Marrotte, a former restaurant owner, the students get handson experience that will encourage them to become more involved in their food choices while having fun!

ROBOTICS FOR YOUNG THINKERS In this project-based unit, students will interact with a variety of robotics products that could include: LEGO, VEXIQ, VEX. Honoring the S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers, students will interact with each other and plan different solutions. Students will conduct a survival scenario as well as an exploratory unit sending their projects to the surface of Mars.

STEAM-POWERED SPARTANS This course offers students the chance to learn, grow and have fun exploring new modes of thinking and doing with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) focused curriculum.

MEALS SNACK PACK Cost: $88.00 Snack packs will be provided by Sodexo and delivered to student’s morning class. A variety of snacks will be served.

LUNCH Cost: $160.00 Students enrolled in Afternoon Care and our Junior Leader Program have the option to preorder lunch from Sodexo. Lunch includes an entrée, starch, fruit, vegetable, and milk.

Daily lunch purchase will not be available. *Menus will be sent home with confirmation letters.

AFTERNOON CARE PROGRAMS AFTERNOON CARE PROGRAM Grades: K-6

Time: 11:45 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Tuition: $800.00

This program provides continuous afternoon supervision on summer school days. Lunch service may be purchased in advance for an additional fee or students may bring their own home lunch. An afternoon snack is provided for all program participants. Learning centers will provide students daily activities in arts and crafts, cooking, sports, outdoor games and more.

Further information will be provided upon enrollment. *Cost includes all activity supplies and field trip fees.

JUNIOR LEADER PROGRAM Grades: 7-10

Time: 12:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Tuition: $400.00

Our junior leader program is open to all students in grades 7-10. Students in the program will assist our staff in the afternoon care program. Our junior leaders are an important component to our summer program staff. *Cost includes all activity supplies and field trip fees.

ENRICHMENT Karate Grades: 1-6 Days/Time: Thursday & Friday 1:00 p.m. - 2:00pm

Tuition: $150.00

We are honored to have the world-renowned International Karate Federation (IKF) return to our summer programs. Under the leadership of Sensei Mari Kotaka Kaneshiro, IKF will continue the martial arts program at Maryknoll School, focusing on character development, physical fitness, and the learning of basic to intermediate skills in karate. Additional fees for uniforms not included. *No class on 6/30 and 7/1 12

SUMMER SCHOOL 2022 HIGH SCHOOL DIVISION (GRADES 9-12) The high school summer school program at Maryknoll School offers classes that are accelerated, incorporating a quick-paced curriculum, that is designed to cover a one credit course in six weeks. Daily classroom instruction focuses on the teaching of multiple class concepts, with daily quizzes and weekly tests. A successful student in our summer school program will need to be able to work and learn at an accelerated pace.

DATES Summer School will begin on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, and will end on Friday, July 15, 2022. There will be no school on Friday, June 10 (Kamehameha Day), Monday June 20 (Juneteenth) and Monday, July 4 (Independence Day), due to school observed holidays.

LEARNING FORMATS Core Classes will be offered in person at the High School campus. All Catholic Virtual classes will be held online. Please see course descriptions below for more information.

PICK-UP/DROP-OFF Parents are asked not to drive on campus to pick up or drop off students before and after school. Our “one lane” driveway makes this impossible to accommodate. Special arrangements may be made through the school office for students with limited mobility.

Parents are asked to be considerate of our neighbors when dropping off or picking up students. Please avoid double-parking and blocking local streets. Arcadia is not to be used for pick-up and drop-off. Parents are advised to use the Dole Street driveway area at the grade school campus, as a pick-up/drop-off area for students. From Dole Street, students are able to cross Punahou Street at crosswalks controlled by traffic lights before and after school.

Students are not to use the crosswalk at Clark Street due to dangerous traffic situations.

STUDENT PARKING Only high school faculty and staff members are allowed to park on the high school grounds.

Parents may park in the assigned visitor spaces in the rear of the school for meetings during school hours. Spaces in the front of the school are intended for pick-up or drop-off in the office during school hours. Students may not park on campus prior to 3:30 p.m. without permission. Any unauthorized cars parked on any school grounds during summer school hours

will be towed, at the owner’s expense.

CLASS AUDITS Students will only be allowed to audit a summer course with the prior approval of the Extended Learning Program Coordinator. Class audits will need to be approved BEFORE the start of the summer school session. Any student starting a summer school course without an audit approval will be taking the course for grade and credit (if applicable).

WITHDRAW/INCOMPLETE Students are able to withdraw from a summer school course at any time after the start of the summer session, with a written notice from a parent or guardian. The student’s progress at the time of the withdrawal will either be a “WP” (withdraw passing), or a “WF” (withdraw failing), and be noted as such on any official student documents. An incomplete mark will be given to a student, who withdraws from a summer school course with no written notice or does not meet the minimum attendance requirement for the class (see attendance policy below). No credit will be earned for any student that withdraws or receives an incomplete for a course.

GRADE REPORTS Deficiency (students receiving a grade below a C-) mid-term grade reports will be emailed home to parents by June 27, 2022. Final grades for all students will be mailed home at the end of the summer school session.

FINAL EXAMS Final exams for all academic classes will be given on Friday, July 15, 2022. ALL students MUST be in attendance on July 15, to take final exams in classrooms, during regular class hours.

Students will not be allowed to take final exams either before or after the scheduled date and time of their class exam. Failure to complete a final exam will result in a failing class grade, and no credit earned. If a student is unable to take the class final exam on its scheduled day, it is recommended that the student either audit the class, or simply not enroll in the class.

CREDIT Non-Maryknoll students are required to check with their homeschool if credits are transferable. If a student is taking a class for credit, please notify the Extended Learning Office to forward grade reports to their homeschool.

ABSENCES/TARDINESS Regular and punctual attendance for summer school is required. If a student will be absent from summer school, a parent must call the Summer School Office at 952-7340. Kindly call in your child’s absence by 7:15 a.m.

ATTENDANCE POLICY If a student misses more than three days of summer school, no credit will be given for the course. Due to the accelerated pace of learning in summer school, one day of summer school is equivalent to five regular school year days. The Office of Extended Learning does not approve absences for vacation trips, summer camps, athletics, work, job interviews, or driver’s license exams. These (and the like) will be considered unexcused absences and teachers are not required to give students make-up work or tests. Maryknoll School reserves the right to request a doctor’s note to substantiate any absence from class. If this policy is not agreeable to parents and their child, Maryknoll School discourages the enrollment in any high school summer school class.

DRESS STANDARDS The high school has a dress code. The dress code is based on the principle of appropriate taste for the atmosphere at Maryknoll School, which reflects the standards of the Maryknoll community. Students in academic classes are to refer to the guidelines below: TOPS: Collared shirts are preferred. T-shirts are acceptable, provided they are not cut or altered in any way. Designs on t-shirts must not be vulgar, or hint at any unacceptable behaviors, or lifestyles. Tank tops, cami’s, spaghetti straps, or bikini tops are NOT allowed.

SWEATSHIRTS/JACKETS: These types must be free of offensive language and negative imagery; no holes, tears, rips or ragged-looking appearance.

BOTTOMS/BOYS: Athletic shorts, board shorts, dress shorts and jeans (no rips or holes) are acceptable. Tights, leggings, pajamas, sweats are prohibited.

BOTTOMS; GIRLS: Jeans (no rips or holes), walking shorts (length slightly above knee or longer) are acceptable. Tights, leggings, pajamas, sweats are prohibited.

HAIR AND ACCESSORIES: All accessories should be appropriate for the school setting, without distraction to the learning environment. Students are expected to keep their hair clean and neat in appearance. Unconventional hairstyles and colorings are not acceptable. Visible body piercings are only allowed on the ear area. Any other visible body piercings are not allowed.

FOOTWEAR: Footwear is required at all times for all students. Slippers are acceptable on a daily basis, except for science labs, where covered shoes are required.

CONDUCT Maryknoll School is a place where students and teachers come together to learn in an atmosphere of mutual respect and personal responsibility. Maryknoll School is a drug, alcohol, and tobacco free school, where prevention is considered a very important element of student safety and consistency. Any behavior which disrupts the learning process, threatens the safety of others, determined to be illegal, or fails to respect the human or property rights of others is unacceptable. Any student found in violation of this policy will face severe disciplinary action with the possibility of expulsion from the summer school program. Any abuse of illegal substances, or possession of such, will result in immediate expulsion of all involved students. The Director of High School will address all major discipline matters.

BREAK TIME Students registered for only one class should plan to arrive and depart promptly. Loitering on campus will not be permitted. There will be a common break time from 10:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Students are not allowed to leave campus during break time, unless they have completed all classes for the day.

CLASS SUPPLIES Please note that some classes may require additional classroom supplies. Supply lists will be sent home on the first day of classes. For those students registering for academic classes, please have your child report to class with basic school supplies (pencil, pen, paper, folder).

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER COURSES HOW TO REGISTER 1. Please complete the Summer High School Registration Form Complete a separate form for each student (photocopies of registration forms are acceptable). Student’s should register for the grade in which they will enter in the Fall of 2022.

2. Send the completed registration form and full tuition payment to: Maryknoll School Office of Extended learning 1526 Alexander Street Honolulu, Hawaii 96822 Only cash/checks are acceptable forms of payment (NO credit cards, money orders). Please make checks payable to Maryknoll School. Out of state and country students must provide a current TB clearance (signed by a U.S. doctor), prior to the first day of summer school. Students will not be admitted to summer school without proper medical clearance.

3. Registration Deadline Deadline for registration in the Maryknoll High School Summer Program is April 29, 2022. Early registration is recommended as these programs fill quickly.

Registration is done on a first-come, first-served basis. Maryknoll School reserves the right to cancel a course if there is insufficient enrollment.

Confirmation of a student’s class schedule will be mailed home by May 16, 2022.

(Students who register after April 29, 2022, will be charged a late fee of $40.00 per student, and will be registered on space available basis only.)

4. Changes in Registration Any change in a student’s summer registration after April 29, 2022, will incur a $40 administration fee. This fee will only be waived if the change in registration is initiated by Maryknoll School, or any of its faculty and/or staff, with the final approval of the coordinator.

5. Withdraw and Refund Policy For students who withdraw on or before April 29, 2022, 50% of program costs, per program, per student is non-refundable. No tuition refund will be given for withdraws after April 29, 2022. For any missed class due to COVID-19 no refunds will be issued.

This course is an introduction to algebra concepts and skills. In particular, students will learn how to work with variables, simplify algebraic expressions, solve equations and systems of equations, graph functions and linear functions in the Cartesian coordinate system, and apply algebraic models to physics.

In this course, students will study the properties and relationships of points, lines, angles, surfaces and solids. Students will learn to construct and make representations of one, two and three-dimensional shapes, and formulate conjectures about their properties. ALGEBRA II Grades: 10-12

This course builds on the concepts and reasoning abilities developed in Algebra I and Geometry.

VIRTUAL DRIVER’S EDUCATION PROGRAM DRIVER’S EDUCATION CLASSROOM CERTIFICATION ONLY Days: Monday/Wednesday/Thursday

Due to State of Hawaii laws that require classroom and road certification prior to acquiring a driver’s license, Maryknoll School will be offering a Driver Education Certification Program in partnership with the Driver Training Center of Hawaii. Successful completion of the Driver Education Program will provide students with the classroom instruction certification.

Classroom instruction will be held virtually and begin on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, and will end on Thursday, July 14, 2022. This tuition includes 30 hours of virtual classroom instruction ONLY. Behind-the-wheel (road) classes are NOT included in the tuition and can be scheduled individually between the program instructor and the parents of the student for an additional cost. All supplies will be included, as well as all necessary paperwork for classroom certification, upon successful completion of classroom section.

CATHOLIC VIRTUAL GENERAL INFORMATION Maryknoll School is excited to be partnering with Catholic Virtual, a fully accredited Catholic online program, to offer high school courses this summer. The Catholic Virtual platform gives students the flexibility of learning distantly while still earning one or half credit towards Maryknoll graduation requirements.

VIRTUAL ONE-CREDIT CORE COURSES The following courses will be taught by an instructor online 3 days a week (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays) for 30 minutes between the hours of 8:00am-12:00pm (exact times TBD). Students will consider the importance of word play exercises in improving their facility with language while building a compelling and creative writing style. Focusing on word nuances and precision, lessons guide students to write in a variety of short modes – including poetry, song lyrics, pose poetry, short stories, and creative nonfiction. Students participate in peer review, during which students learn best practices for participating in writing workshops, and then revise their work using feedback from their peers. The course will also focus on longer works of fiction: short stories, plays, and novels. Students apply what they have learned about writing workshops and revising to the longer pieces of writing they create towards the end of the course.

This test preparation course effectively prepares students for all sections of the SAT exam.

Course content is broken into strands, allowing students to focus on each subject extensively before moving on to the next area of study. Within each strand, a diagnostic pretest identifies students’ strengths and weaknesses and tailors a personalized study plan for each test-taker.

VIRTUAL HALF-CREDIT ELECTIVE COURSES The following courses will be offered as independent study. BUSINESS LAW Grades: 9-12

Tuition: $600.00 (1/2 credit)

In this course, students will learn about the American legal system as they examine ethics, court systems, criminal law, and torts. They will explore how the court systems work together, and which types of misconduct result in going to court. As they progress through the course, students will also gain an understanding of what is right and wrong in business actions and employment law. Study will focus on the formation of a business and the basic legal issues associated with each type of business.

CYBERSECURITY Grades: 9-12

Tuition: $600.00 (1/2 credit)

In this course, students will learn about the practice of protecting networks, systems, and programs from digital attacks. They will better understand the aim of these attacks, such as destroying information, extorting money and resources, or disrupting business operations. They will learn about the challenges and opportunities that implementing cybersecurity measures can present. As attackers become more innovative, it is more important than ever to have effective cybersecurity channels in place to counter them. Students will learn about countermeasures and role recovery and their integral function in the cybersecurity realm.

Additionally, students will learn what makes certain networks and systems more vulnerable to attacks. They will become adept at identifying potential viruses, worms, threats, and malware.

The Cybersecurity course acts as a foundation on which to build extensive knowledge about threats to digital security.

Students will be required to make connections between the strategies and skills they learn in this course and the implementation of those strategies and skills in other coursework. Upon completion of the course, students will have learned a variety of specific learning skills and strategies, gained a greater understanding of their own learning preferences, and become prepared to develop and implement specific learning and study plans for any academic course or other learning needs.
