Grade School (K-8) Course Descriptions

FIRST STEPS

Grade: Kindergarten Time: 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Tuition: $1,000.00 This program is designed to provide the children with experiences in individual and group activities to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and math readiness, and independent work. The students will begin handwriting of single phonograms and numbers (1-10), using proper pencil grip. MANDARIN IMMERSION

Grade: K Time: 7:45 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Tuition: $1,000.00 Grades: 1-2 Time: 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Tuition: $1,000.00 This dual language program is designed to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading and math readiness both in Mandarin and English. Children will be immersed in Mandarin for 2 hours and English for 2 hours. Mathematics will be taught in Mandarin and Language Arts in English. ACADEMIC PODS

ACADEMIC PODS

Grades: 1-5 Times: 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Tuition: $1,000.00 Elementary level academic PODS will consist of a two-hour block of language arts and a two-hour block of mathematics. Language Arts: Through individual, small group and whole- class activities, the skills of reading and writing will be practiced and developed. English proficiency commensurate with grade level is expected of all students. Math: Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects, and other activities. Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed. ACADEMIC PODS

Grades: 6-8 Times: 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Tuition: $1,000.00 Middle level academic PODS will consist of a two-hour literature and writing block and a two-hour block of mathematics (Grade 6-7) or Pre-Algebra (Grade 8). Literature and Writing (Grades 6-8): This course is designed to strengthen the reading and writing skills of the middle school student. Using a literature-based curriculum, students will engage in daily reading and writing activities through the use of different genres. *This course is reading and writing intensive. Mathematics (Grades 6-7): Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects, and other activities. Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed. Algebra Preview (Grade 8): Students will explore mathematical concepts and their connection to each other in the context of other subjects through discussion, projects and other activities. Computational and mental arithmetic skills will also be reviewed.

EXPLORATORY PODS

Grades: 1-5 Times: 8:00 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Tuition: $1,100.00 Grades: 6-8 Times: 7:45 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Tuition: $1,100.00 Exploratory PODS will consist of 3, one-hour 15 minute classes. POD daily schedules will consist of a rotation of enrichment courses (see individual course descriptions below). Each grade level’s Exploratory POD courses are as follows: Grades 1-3: Court Sports, Future Engineers, Robotics for Young Thinkers Grades 4-5: Future Engineers, Hoop It Up, STEAM-Powered Spartans Grades 6-8: Creative Coding, DJ Mixing Master, Kids can Cook

EXPLORATORY POD COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

COURT SPORTS

Are you ready for some indoor court fun! Court Sports will provide the basic skills and knowledge of indoor recreational sports. Students will participate in team sports such as indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football, and more. CREATIVE CODING

Students will use SCRATCH coding (developed by MIT) and a 3D desktop application to create their very own interactive games, digital art and animated short stories. They will develop an understanding of how video games are made and develop their problem-solving skills as they create their own fun video games and short stories. Each project progressively teaches more advanced capabilities within the video game design software. Students will be proud and excited to play their very own completed video games. They will learn how to think creatively, work collaboratively and reason systematically. DJ MIXING MASTER CLASS

Students will learn the technique of DJ mixing, the history of the art form, how to set up their gear, to program a complete master mix, and the skill of DJ scratching. This Master Class is instructed by award winning DJ/Entertainer Kutmaster Spaz now known as Mr. Bulatao. Back in 2000 Mr. Bulatao started the world’s first Scratch DJ school for anyone wanting to learn the art form. You do not need to know how to play an instrument nor have any type of musical background to be in this class. You just need a love for music, a willingness to learn, and a spirit to have fun!

Tap into your child’s potential by encouraging their curiosity and creativity with Bricks 4 Kidz®. Students will learn and grow with our fun-filled model plans! Our plans, designed by engineers and architects, provide an engaging platform to explore principles of engineering, architecture, physics and more. Students will develop problem solving, critical thinking skills and learn how to code their models and watch them come to life!

HOOP IT UP

This course will provide students with basic skills and the concept of teamwork in the sport of basketball. This integrated course will use a variety of activities to teach fundamentals, which will allow each student to experience game situations, with equal amounts of playing time. Boys and girls will be grouped according to age and ability levels.

KIDS CAN COOK

A fun summer class where students learn essential cooking techniques and work alongside their peers to gain and develop new culinary skills. Students will build on these each week, starting with basic kitchen safety and ending with long-lasting proficiency through practicing counting, measuring, reading, and time tracking all while making delicious electric skillet dishes. Taught by Kelly Marrotte, a former restaurant owner, the students get handson experience that will encourage them to become more involved in their food choices while having fun!

ROBOTICS FOR YOUNG THINKERS

In this project-based unit, students will interact with a variety of robotics products that could include: LEGO, VEXIQ, VEX. Honoring the S.T.E.A.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) careers, students will interact with each other and plan different solutions. Students will conduct a survival scenario as well as an exploratory unit sending their projects to the surface of Mars.

STEAM-POWERED SPARTANS

This course offers students the chance to learn, grow and have fun exploring new modes of thinking and doing with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) focused curriculum.

SNACK PACK

Cost: $88.00 Snack packs will be provided by Sodexo and delivered to student’s morning class. A variety of snacks will be served. LUNCH

Cost: $160.00 Students enrolled in Afternoon Care and our Junior Leader Program have the option to preorder lunch from Sodexo. Lunch includes an entrée, starch, fruit, vegetable, and milk. Daily lunch purchase will not be available. *Menus will be sent home with confirmation letters.

AFTERNOON CARE PROGRAMS

AFTERNOON CARE PROGRAM

Grades: K-6 Time: 11:45 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Tuition: $800.00 This program provides continuous afternoon supervision on summer school days. Lunch service may be purchased in advance for an additional fee or students may bring their own home lunch. An afternoon snack is provided for all program participants. Learning centers will provide students daily activities in arts and crafts, cooking, sports, outdoor games and more. Further information will be provided upon enrollment. *Cost includes all activity supplies and field trip fees. JUNIOR LEADER PROGRAM

Grades: 7-10 Time: 12:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Tuition: $400.00 Our junior leader program is open to all students in grades 7-10. Students in the program will assist our staff in the afternoon care program. Our junior leaders are an important component to our summer program staff. *Cost includes all activity supplies and field trip fees. ENRICHMENT

Karate

Grades: 1-6 Days/Time: Thursday & Friday 1:00 p.m. - 2:00pm Tuition: $150.00 We are honored to have the world-renowned International Karate Federation (IKF) return to our summer programs. Under the leadership of Sensei Mari Kotaka Kaneshiro, IKF will continue the martial arts program at Maryknoll School, focusing on character development, physical fitness, and the learning of basic to intermediate skills in karate. Additional fees for uniforms not included. *No class on 6/30 and 7/1
